Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic nodded, it seemed that even if everyone wasn’t on board with his initial concept, they were still willing to start exploring exactly what was going on since the accident. As far as he was concerned, that meant it was only a matter of time before they started to find out just how they could change the world with their new abilities.
“That’s great, Will, could you check if there are any of those places that we could use? As for warehouses Persephone, I’ll have a look and see if any of them have a short term lease available. Someone will be amenable to not asking questions.”
After all, he didn’t want someone else jumping the gun on these abilities, someone who took cash and didn’t care what they did with the warehouse would probably not be too hard to find. As to Persephone’s concerns, he could appreciate them at least. He had enough money to take a few days off, and enough trust in his staff to allow them to run things, but he usually got restless when he spent too long out of the office. The only thing keeping him out now was these new powers and the possibilities they represented.
“We’re all adults, we should be able to find some time that we can all meet up, or most of us anyway. I know you work a lot but I’m sure we can fit something in. Besides, do we really need everyone to be there all the time? It’ll be great to get a few people to help out and experiment, but it might just get confusing if all six of us are there…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It seemed that Will was still not convinced by his idea, which was unusual. Dominic was a master of selling the impossible dream, but like any truly good salesman, he would never lie. He was playing a card game with only half of the deck here, but he was damned if he was going to let the deliberate silence of those in the know control his decisions.
All Dominic knew was that he had been handed a golden opportunity, and like any major athlete who had realised their talent, he was going to grab that opportunity with both hands. Still, it was clear that Will wasn’t happy about it, and from the sound of it would continue to argue his point. He’d brushed over Dominic’s question, which was interesting, and he wondered why Will was hesitant to talk about that. He didn’t seem the type to miss so pertinent a question without a good reason.
Then Alice piped up, and Dominic smiled at the opportunity to take control of the situation once more. It was a good idea, after all, currently all he had done was fry his computer and scorch the walls, and it would be interesting to see just what he could do if he kicked loose.
“That… is a great idea.”
He grinned around at them all.
“We don’t need to come out about all of this, but we could at least try and have a little fun while we work out what exactly we have on our hands here. We find some waste ground or a warehouse, there’s bound to be somewhere we can do this without people noticing.”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | “What gives them the right to decide for us?”
Dominic seemed perplexed. In reality, he had picked up on the doubt in Will’s voice, and was playing that for all he was worth.
“We’re not going to force anyone to reveal themselves. This is our life; these are our bodies, our powers. I’ve never let anyone else make my decisions for me, and I’ll be damned if I start that now.”
He looked kindly at Alice, “maybe yours is just taking a little while to wake up, what are the odds of everyone else getting one and you not?”
He began to move around, making himself once more the centre of attention, just how he liked it. He spoke again with an innocent smile, “Alice and Mason might seem idealistic, but why?”
He paused for effect, “maybe they’re right, I mean, I can’t quite see you in tights Will, but maybe we have a responsibility now, to paraphrase Uncle Ben. This Doctor gave us our powers to do what we choose, if she turns up and starts telling me what to do with them I’d tell her the exact same thing.”
His irresistible charm was making his words sound even better, selling the dream that Mason and Alice had hinted at.
“And if you don’t want to advertise that you’ve got these powers? What’s forcing you to? Certainly not me. I might find it pretty disappointing, but I wouldn’t hold it against you.”
Even so, his words managed to heavily suggest that they would be more disappointed in themselves if they didn’t end up agreeing with him. It was hard to resist, just as it was always hard to resist anything Dominic Weaver might suggest. He had that infectious enthusiasm that was almost impossible to avoid, and made it easy to brush aside any concerns you might have.
He shrugged apologetically at Will, “it’s been some time since we last burned someone for witchcraft. Times have changed since then, they might come for us with pitch forks and torches, but I doubt that they’ll be backed up by the cops and the army.”
He frowned, “anyway, you never said, what is your power?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic revolved as though on a turntable as Will entered the room behind him. He’d stopped the sparks flickering between his fingers, but seemed to radiate that new found energy even so. He smiled as the final member of their little group joined them. Will, however, seemed far more serious than the rest of them.
“Don’t tell me. You’ve had some weird side effects from the doctor too?”
It made sense, everyone else seemed to have, except, he guessed, for Alice, judging by the look on her face. She certainly seemed to be less and less of her normal excitable self as more people announced the changes they had experienced. The war on her face was evident, at least to him. In an act of kindness he drew attention back to himself.
“This is huge. Let alone the scientific implications, which I won’t pretend to understand, think of the marketing opportunities.”
The excitement in his voice was palpable, and infectious, it would have taken a strong will indeed to resist the passion in the PR exec’s voice.
“We could be celebrities overnight, all we need to do is get it out in a way that can’t be called a hoax. We’re going to have to get this stuff all over the news, the only question, is how?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic had opened the door for Persephone as she approached the car. He glanced up at the apartment building as she got in, it seemed nice enough, and he wondered how exactly she could afford to live here. He’d picked up the fact that she worked as a waitress, and it was obvious that she wouldn’t be able to afford the rent on a place like that. He surmised that she had either inherited it, or paid for it with less savoury means that she wasn’t willing to disclose.
Not that Dominic cared. As long as her past didn’t prove to be a major issue in his plans, he couldn’t see what it mattered. A past as an escort might prove difficult, but as long as there wasn’t video evidence, anything could be explained.
He relaxed back into the driver’s seat as she climbed in beside him, feeling for all the world like a High School kid on the way to the prom. Not that many High School kids would be driving a Chevy Corvette. Dominic was fairly wealthy, the car was not a lease. It fitted him perfectly, flashy and powerful, and he demonstrated that as he gunned it down the road.
It didn’t take them long to reach Claire’s apartment, Dominic drove as though he was wishing for another crash like June 3rd. He pulled up smoothly beside the apartment building, showing an unusual control for such a young and wealthy man. They got out and he slipped his card into the parking meter. A moment later they were in the elevator.
They had been relatively friendly in the car, after all, the only thing that could stop Dominic talking was actual death, as the near death experience hadn’t even slowed him down. Still, he knew enough about people to let Persephone talk when she wanted to and not to push too far, he was very good at his job after all.
They burst dramatically into the apartment, Dominic with sparks jumping between his fingers, about the only trick he’d managed to perfect without scorching the walls and shorting his TV.
“Guys! We have hit the big time!”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dom shook his head, even though Persephone couldn’t see him at the other end of the phone. It was one of those habits that people tended to keep a hold of while on the phone, nodding or shaking their heads as they spoke, gesturing wildly with their hands, even when the person they were talking to couldn’t possibly see them.
“That’s fine, you gotta do what you gotta do.”
He was slightly amazed that she was so calm about her new abilities, as though it was just something that happened to her every day. He remembered her talking about her apartment, and the plants she kept there, so maybe understanding more about plants wasn’t such a big change for her. It wasn’t like she was now throwing lightning or bending forks with her skin. Even so, his mind had been racing with the possibilities offered by their new found powers.
“We’ve got to find out how it’s affected everyone else as well, no way it was just us.”
He smiled to himself, considering just what they could do. It was almost like a movie, maybe Mason would have developed wall-crawling powers. He was a little old to be Peter Parker, but a real life Spiderman would bring in millions of dollars worth of sponsorship.
“Is there somewhere you want to be picked up? I can swing by and then we can head out to meet the others, maybe see if we can get to the bottom of this.”
They talked for a moment longer, agreeing on a place for Dominic to meet Persephone, then, with best wishes, they both hung up.
Dominic poured himself another drink. With the excitement and fresh energy he could feel coursing through his veins, there was no way he was going to sleep well tonight…

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic didn’t sound so enthused by Persephone’s apparent ‘side effects’. She had developed super plant care powers?
“That’s… what? A new understanding of plants? That’s cool, I wonder what else you can do…”
Glad now that he could apparently pick up his phone, and unsure why that was the case, he took it off speaker and put it to his ear, sitting down again at the desk, though keeping his distance from the computer.
“OK, well I seem to be turning into…”
He paused, as though searching for the right words.
“Wait, did you see Spiderman last year? Well I’m basically the villain, minus the blue face.”
His mind was already whirling through the opportunities, there were so many things that this could mean for them. They had apparently developed abilities that defied understanding, and the person that had given to them had left no rules or guidance. As far as Dominic was concerned, that meant they could do what they wanted with them.
They needed to go viral, they needed to become something so big they couldn’t be ignored. A simple Youtube clip would be dismissed as a hoax, clever CGI, but if they could do something big, there would be no dismissing it. If you’d been in the room with him you would have almost been able to hear the cogs whirring in his head.
“Well I’ve organised to meet the other guys tomorrow morning, apparently they’ve got some crazy shit going on as well, we’ve got to meet up and check it all out.”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic had barely hung up the phone to the other three before Gregory put through another call. He was, at this moment, intensely grateful for the fact that his office was as close to soundproof as a room like this could be. This time it was Persephone, the somewhat more collected girl from the hospital. Like him, she had been saved from some sort of awful event, but had little recollection of it. He tapped the button for speaker again, noting that there seemed to be no reaction when his finger tapped the plastic device.
“Yeah? Persephone?”
Just judging from her opening words it sounded as though Persephone was experiencing some interesting reactions to whatever had happened to them, although she sounded far from excited about it. Not quite how Alice had sounded, or even Mason. It was understandable, he supposed. It was possible that the only reason he hadn’t freaked out was because of the high that his… super power? Appeared to produce in him. He’d never felt more powerful, and it helped that he could apparently throw lightning bolts. He felt like a Greek God.
“I’ve noticed… I’ve developed a few side effects of my own, I wasn’t anticipating the kind of redecorating costs they might come with though.”
He eyed the scorch mark on his wall, the room was beginning to smell faintly as though something had been burned in here, and judging by the black scar, he supposed something had. His mind was full of the possibilities, of what this could mean for him, for his company, even for the world.
“You just need to keep calm Persephone OK. Tell me what’s happened to you? You’ve got… powers then?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It was fairly late by the time Dominic arrived back at the office, and most people were preparing to go home. He knew all of them by name, shook their hands, hugged one or two, and kindly waved away their concerns. It was easy to believe whatever Dominic said, especially when he appeared as sprightly and energetic as always. Some looked confused, they’d heard about the crash, but knew little else. What could keep him out of the office for nearly a week?
A few friends were waiting in his office, and the apparent leader, the tall, slender man who was his secretary and assistant stepped forward, raising a long finger.
“Now Dominic, we know you just want to work, but no one else could believe that you hadn’t been here for so long. We thought it might be nice to celebrate the fact that you at least appeared to have a life.”
Gregory winked, and proffered a glass, filling it with a measure of scotch. Everyone else in the office already had a glass. Michelle his partner and Alexander his top rep. Michelle, who was married, but had almost as obsessive an attitude towards work, raised her glass as Dominic held up his.
“To having a life.”
Dom glared good humouredly at the three, then joined in, tapping his glass to theirs with a ring of crystal. They drank for a moment.
“Now stop drinking my scotch and get out of my office.”
They laughed, and it was only a few more minutes before he was left alone in his office, to finally get back to work. It was going to be a long night...
Dom leaned back from his desk with a sigh, and rubbed at his eyes. Much as he loved his job, reviewing contracts was hardly the most riveting part of it. His computer screen glowed brightly, and he leaned forwards to turn the machine off. That was when things got really weird.
There was a strange jolt in his fingers, and a sudden rush of warmth that soon spread to his whole body. The lights above him flickered, and the computer before him beeped warningly, the screen flashing to blue, before it shut itself off. He pushed himself back and away from the desk, his chair spinning away to collide with the low shelf below his window. There had been a hardly detectable blue light coming from his hand, now gone.
He still felt great, if anything, he felt even better than he had before, at the hospital. It was beyond healthy now, more… energised, as though he was on enough caffeine to hop him up, but not quite enough to make his hands shake.
“Holy shit.”
Looked through the glass door at the front of his office to see if Gregory had noticed anything, he crossed the room quickly. What could this mean?
He’d put his hand to his computer, and apparently fried the thing? Was it just some sort of mega static charge?
A quick tap to the metal handle of his office door instantly disproved that theory. What was this? He felt as though he could run a marathon in about ten seconds, he was almost buzzing with energy and motivation. Buzzing…
Had he pulled electricity out of his computer?
He shook his head to himself, it was ridiculous, human beings didn’t just spontaneously absorb electricity. It must have just been a freak accident. Even so… it couldn’t hurt to try it again… could it?
He reached down to the power button on his computer, his fingers brushing against the USB ports as they found the small indentation. He pressed the button.
Nothing happened. He stood up again, and as he did so a spark flew from his hand to the exposed metal of the USB port. There was a crack, a whine, and whisps of smoke began to seep from the vents in the case. Dominic jumped back in shock. He’d pulled electricity from the computer, and then, with another touch, fried the whole damn thing.
Now Dominic might not have been the type to read comic books, but he went to the movies, he saw the big blockbusters. He was clever enough to be sceptical, but just imaginative enough to make the impossible leap.
“How do I market this?”
He had to call the others, no way they hadn’t discovered something like this.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It turned out that they were only caught in the hospital for another day, Dominic was not happy about being kept there against his will, and unlike the others, could afford a lawyer to express that unhappiness on his behalf. Once the hospital had made sure they were aware that they were liable for leaving against their recommendation, it became clear that they were taking a step back.
There had been no sign of nurse Franklin, though the hospital was still busy, still dealing with the aftermath of one of the most horrific road accidents in history. Dominic’s assistant had appeared before they were discharged, eyed up all of them, then returned an hour later with clothes for everyone. Dominic waved off any objections, and with his irresistible enigma managed to convince even the most stubborn of them to accept his gifts.
Then he marched them all down to the main desk where he charmed the receptionist into finding him the nurse. She wasn’t particularly helpful, the doctor she’d seen had been short and wearing the ubiquitous white coat. She hadn’t even been sure on the colour of the hair, in the busy ER it had been the last thing on her mind to commit unusual faces to memory. | © seadra of gs |

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | “Well that was helpful.”
Dominic’s voice was loud in the sudden silence after the doctor’s departure. “So we don’t know what happened, the supposed experts don’t know what happened, and our only clue is a mysterious doctor no one has seen before or since.”
He smirked at the group, “I’m really hoping that one of you guys is a detective, cause this is starting to sound like something out of a movie, and I don’t appreciate being kept in the dark.”
He looked about, “my phone seems to have taken a hit in the crash, so that’s out of the question, any of the rest of you got one that works? I could do with calling my office, have them send someone.”
This situation was eerie, as if they really had been saved by some sort of guardian angel, a spirit that had appeared to ensure their survival, and then, job done, disappeared beyond the reach of mortal man. Whoever they were, they’d done a great job, Dominic kept himself fit and healthy, it allowed him to work harder and more efficiently. The way he was feeling now went beyond that, it was as if someone had hit the reset button on his body, he felt, to be cliched, like a new man.
He looked at Alice, a little concerned, she looked shaken, and had moved to sit on one of the beds, staring at her hands, her face pale.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | He wasn’t exactly happy at being ushered out of sight once more. It was almost as if the hospital was trying to hush up exactly what had happened, which, from a PR point of view made sense. They couldn’t explain it, yes, these few people had survived horrible wounds under their care, but people would ask why, and no administrator would want to have to answer those sorts of questions. They would still know more than he did right now though, so he fixed the doctor with a questioning look, though the dark skinned girl from the other room had already voiced the same concerns as he.
The man looked a little cornered, he laughed nervously, “more than just anomalies, I didn’t treat all of you, just you three,” he nodded towards the girls.
He shrugged, “I can’t discuss it because of patient confidentiality.”
The blue haired girl, clearly the youngest here, interrupted him, “I don’t care… tell us what’s going on?”
The doctor ran a hand through his hair, pausing to think, “you should be dead,” he said simply.
Dominic frowned, “clearly that’s not the case, how could we have been in that kind of a crash and be fine?”
“I don’t know!”
The doctor was clearly agitated now, turning to Alice “look, the fact that you were still alive when you came in was, frankly, a miracle, then that doctor came in to see you…”
“What doctor?”
Dominic had seized on the clue the man had let slip.
“I don’t know, it was chaos in the ER. One of the nurse’s saw her. She came in, pulled the curtains around your bed and then left a few minutes later. After that, no wounds, no scars, no broken bones, nothing. I wish I could explain it, hell, if she’d had wings it would have made more sense, but that’s it.”
He sat down on the bed, “I wish I could tell you what happened, but I can’t.”
Dominic glanced at the blue haired girl, she looked shaken, understandably, but looked up as one of the other girls spoke, “who was the nurse?” | © seadra of gs |

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. + music | “Dominic… Dom.”
This was weird, he couldn’t really remember anything that had happened, but that wasn’t to say that he didn’t believe it. After all, why would a nurse lie to him? It wasn’t like this was some sort of prank show after all. Or was it? He looked around suspiciously for a moment as though expecting to see a camera crew lurking in the corner. Of course his suspicions weren’t satisfied.
After that he searched for a phone, that proved about as successful. Most hospital rooms these days had phones, and it looked like this one was intended to, but the cable trailed from the wall to simply end in an unimpressive connector. Apparently they hadn’t got around to connecting up this ward to the rest of the building yet.
He awkwardly clambered into his trousers, realising that the edges of it seemed singed, as if they’d been hung over a fire. Thanks to the accident perhaps? Then why were his clothes in worse condition than he was? It was all pretty confusing, and although the nurse had been quite clear about him staying in bed, he was damned if he was going to sit about and wait for someone to give him an answer. Simply sitting about didn’t suit him, so, in the strange outfit that was slightly charred, stained, and temporary, he headed towards the door.

His tone was incredulous, more so when he realised he must have been here for two days. Admittedly a car accident was a fairly good excuse for being off work, but he dreaded to think what might have happened in the office while he was away. This was probably unfair, a workaholic he might be, but Dominic knew business, and good business meant hiring good staff, everything was probably fine.
He would have fired off half a dozen emails to satisfy himself with the situation in the office, if it weren’t for his phone choosing that precise moment to die, the screen fading to black without warning. He scowled, but dropped it back onto the chest of drawers beside his bed.
“It’s the fifth, now I don’t know about you guys but the last date I remember was the third. I guess you two were in this accident as well?”
He smiled, instantly appearing to take the two into his confidence, presenting the image that came so easily to him. He patted his chest again, as though double checking it was still solid and not mortally injured in some way he hadn’t noticed.
“I guess we got lucky. I must’ve hit my head or something cause I don’t even remember a crash, I just remember waking up here.”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic proved to be less than horrific, even if he looked a little odd in his cobbled together outfit. The three clustered women looked a little less confident than he felt though, and that suited him just fine. Every salesman likes to be in the position of power. Just like the three that had been in the room with him, they were clothed in standard hospital gowns, and not much else. The shapeless coverings shifted oddly in the artificial breeze courtesy of the air conditioning units in the ceiling.
He looked back into the room he had just emerged from, the other two men were moving towards the door, neither wanting to stay behind it seemed. The welcoming grin spread across his features, his artificially whitened teeth standing out bright against his dark skin as he realised that these three must be here for the same reason.
He pointed a relaxed finger at the trio.
