Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic was not entirely surprised to hear Mason's criticism of the building, even if he was trying to be positive about it. He was a salesman, a corporate politician, which meant he was accustomed to reading between the lines and hearing the words that people didn't say. He took no offence though, he had picked up the lease for a song and had been slightly surprised that it was as intact as it was. He'd expected bullet holes and police tape. At least the roof seemed to keep the worst of the rain out.
He nodded in agreement, "Well I wouldn't know where to begin with something like that, and I don't really want to reveal too much of what's going on here. So tell me what we need to do and we'll do it. I bow to your expertise in this."
The problem of communication was an issue though. After all, it wasn't as though Dominic could simply have a conversation with thin air. It wouldn't be long before strange looks turned into worried calls to the authorities. "What about a phone, can you keep that invisible with you? Then you could just text me. It might feel a bit weird standing next to each other and texting, but at least I won't look like a lunatic."
He waved away Mason's concern about money though, "By all means, but don't stress about it, this is an amazing opportunity for all of us, but I accept that I might be taking it away a bit. This is too exciting to worry about money."
The challenge was a little unexpected, as was the fact that Mason accepted it. Dom raised his eyebrow, but didn't see any reason to object. He cast about the room for something of the right height, and spotted a small windowed room at the far end that looked like it might be an office.
Exploring it proved that his assumption had been right, it was an office, it was dirty, but seemed in better condition than the rest of the warehouse. There was an ikea table that had obviously been pressed into service as a desk, and he dragged it out into the main area.
"Step up to your challenger!"

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. + music | When Mason commented on the building being up to code Dominic looked about the decrepit and damp warehouse. “I personally would not go on record saying that this place is up to code. I’d hope so, but I picked the lease up for cash, from a guy who also paid cash. Who knows what else he was avoiding here.”
Dom gathered from Mason’s tone that the invisible man was looking at him. He shrugged, “Sure, I try to be a fair man, if you want to, and can pay, then we can work something out. How about you come with me to pick up some stuff to test out my power?
“I’m not worried about you guys paying because I see this as an investment, and I have the money to spend on it. I’m only 27, it’s not like I’m draining my retirement fund for it. If you can help though, that’s great, because I’m not as wealthy as I’d really like to be.”
He grinned, “But talking about money is boring. We can build our own little Avengers complex in here. It’s not like we can test or train our powers on the street is it? It might be nice to start building something to see how much we can do.”
He nodded at Mason’s ‘grunt’, smirking in response to the joke.
“Interesting that you only bring this up now that you can’t show it off…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic shrugged, “It has lights, so I guess that there was power once. The last guy vacated pretty quick though so I don’t think the bills have been paid for a while. I’ll look into it though.”
For a moment he thought through exactly what they were planning right now. Pouring more electricity into the old and decrepit wiring of an even older and more decrepit building seemed like it might not be the most intelligent move. Cutting it off might not be as dangerous, but he wasn’t sure what might happen either way. He scratched the back of his head in thought.
“Would that be safe? I know we’re sort of playing with fire here, but I’d rather not actually set the whole place on fire if I overload the wrong thing…”
He looked around, then back down at the car battery beside him.
“You used to be an electrician right Mason? Could you make some sort of circuit in here if I got you the right things?”
It would give Mason the opportunity to do something more practical; especially considering how limited he was in terms of moving about the city now. If he didn’t make any progress with his own power, at least he would be helping someone else make progress with their ability.
“If you give me a list of stuff you need I can pick it up and bring it here in the next couple of days…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dom cocked an eyebrow at both suggestions. They both made sense, although Mason’s idea clearly came from a background understanding of electricity beyond that of a normal high school student. Unfortunately that also put it beyond Dominic’s understanding of electricity. He nodded though, “I’m not sure how well I can redirect stuff, I haven’t tried it much. I can pull it in and fire it out, but that’s all I’ve managed so far…”
He shrugged, “I’m up for anything,” he pointed at Alice, “Let’s try your idea first, then if that works, we need to work out how exactly we test that. Especially if I’m trying to overload something, I don’t want to electrocute one of you by accident or anything.”
He moved over to the duffle, unzipping it and exposing the heavy black car batteries. He unscrewed the caps on the terminals, then brushed his fingers across the contacts. They sparked at the contact, and Dom grinned. “Ok guys, you should step back, let’s see if I can act like a circuit.”
He stood, raising one hand and sighting on the same shelf again, the flames had died out, though there was still a faint haze surrounding the metal unit. He steadied himself, and then raised another hand to the contacts on the car battery. He let out a breath, then released the very careful control he had been holding over the instincts that had apparently come with these abilities. There was a brief pause, then a crackle, sparks fell from the contacts, then stopped before hitting the ground. They reversed mid-flight, soaring up towards his palm. A snap echoed through the warehouse, and suddenly Dom and the battery were linked. He looked up at the shelving again, determination etched on his face.
He cleared thoughts of circuits from his mind, that wasn’t how he operated; it was about feeling, not technicalities. He felt the storm at his core felt it building, filling like a great reservoir, then he opened the flood gates. The sparks linking his hand and the battery thickened, then abruptly cut out.
The thick string of plasma connecting him and the shelving petered out as well, it had lasted as long as the last bolt he had fired, but seemed to have far more kick than the last.
“That seemed to work… Now how do we test the next thing?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | “He’s right though, I don’t think anyone will be too bothered about your Prom Queen when they see what you can do. That’ll really impress them, a hell of a lot more than any plastic piece of jewellery you got in school.”
Dom shrugged, grimacing at Mason’s persistence in having his name idea approved of. “They won’t disagree, but it’s not exactly going to impress people or strike fear into criminals is it, let’s see if we can put our minds into creating a name that can do that. Alice is right. If we want to do this, if we want to really be… super heroes, we’ve gotta think about it.”
He liked that idea, over the next few days, if they were thinking about what they might call themselves, then they would be more concerned with that than doubts. He had no intention to endanger anyone, but doubts could destroy any project before it got off the ground, and he wanted them riding high on the excitement of what was happening to them here. A quick glance at Alice confirmed that it was unlikely she was going to be coming down off her high anytime soon.
He grinned, feeling the excitement creeping up within him again. It was impossible not to pick up on it. Alice was positively vibrating off the floor, and Mason’s voice conveyed the excitement his face no longer could. It was like they’d stepped into a Marvel movie, but there were no cameras, no tennis balls on sticks to indicate CGI. It was all actually happening to them right now.
“Let’s see what else we can do!”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic shook his head, amused, “We’ve gotta get you a name before he finds one he likes too much.”
Mason may be many things, but a gifted marketer he was not. At least he was trying though. It was reassuring to see, or at least hear, how excited someone like Mason was about the thought of real life super heroes. Alice being excited about it wasn’t all that unexpected, she’d turned up today in an Iron Man hoodie after all.
He rubbed his arm a little, it hadn’t hurt all that much, but it had been a strange experience to suddenly feel that sensation come from someone that wasn’t moving. Alice was obviously delighted, even if they didn’t fully understand what was going on, it was clear that something was.
He turned back so that he was facing Alice, “What do you think? A super hero team could be amazing. Think how it could make people feel? All this shit stuff happens in the world, but then people get powers, and they use them to save lives? What better could we do?”
He wondered just how much Alice could absorb. He could absorb and fire electricity, but he was still extremely limited in how much juice he seemed to have naturally. Alice had no default amount it seemed, but how much could she stop? A punch… A blow from a bat… A bullet..?

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic shook his hand, though not from any need to remove pain, more because of how strange the sensation had been. As soon as his fist had touched Alice’s arm it had stopped dead. He’d barely felt the impact, it had simply been the lightest of touches, like he’d reached out to tap her on the shoulder. He’d certainly swung his arm though, maybe not hard enough to do serious damage, but enough that she should have felt something.
“That was definitely weird…”
He looked from his unharmed hand to Alice’s unscathed shoulder. The crease of her hoody had shifted a little, but that was the only change he could see, and only because he was inspecting it. His fist had just stopped dead, in the way it should have done if he’d tried to punch a wall.
Alice had felt something though, even if it wasn’t the pain of being punched in the arm. At least his had immediately made sense, hers was just weird, he wished he’d paid a little more attention in school. How real life super powers worked wasn’t exactly something they could google, and he felt that some actual scientific knowledge might have been helpful here.
“Still drawing a blank on how it works though…”
However, once Mason spoke up again, both he and Alice turned to the source of his voice, speaking in unison.
“No!”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Punching Alice hadn’t exactly been the plan when they’d arranged this and Dominic could admit that he wasn’t exactly comfortable with the idea. That said, it seemed to him like a safer plan than throwing her down a flight of stairs, and falling from a height still offered the potential for injury, no matter how low the starting height. At least if he punched her in the arm she’d just have a light bruise for a couple of days. It wasn’t an ideal solution, but then neither was practising in a damp, dark, decrepit warehouse.
He held up his hands in surrender. “I don’t want to hit her any more than you man, but I’d rather take the risk of giving her a dead arm than her cracking her skull on the floor.”
He eyed said concrete surface with some concern. “Who knows what she might catch?”
The warehouse was dirty, and they would definitely have to be careful about the collapsed shelving. It looked like any sort of injury in here would require a tetanus shot at the very least. He looked to Alice, and tightened his fist, he looked reluctant, though clearly still prepared to go through with it if she agreed.
“I can’t think of anything else, but only if you’re up for it Alice…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic wracked his brains, but nothing came to him except maybe that she had turned into Superman. He shrugged, “don’t look at me, my knowledge of super heroes stops at kryptonite and radioactive spiders. I never really had the time to read comic books. Love the movies though.”
He shrugged and looked pointedly at Alice, “I think if anyone knows anything about super powers it’s Alice, I’m great at PR, I can brand super heroes. Working out what powers they have? Nah, I leave that to the professionals,” He gestured to Alice, “I guess that’s you.”
He nodded in agreement with Mason however, “storing stuff up sounds kinda right, I mean it’s what I do. I tried, I’ve not got that much juice, that’s what this is for.”
He kicked the duffel bag, “car battery, gives me a burst if I need it. I don’t know about storing up injuries though, flying across the room tends not to be symptomatic of any injury I heard of, except that little girl in the exorcist.”
He raised a concerned eyebrow, “you aren’t possessed are you? No desire to defile the Lord? Your head doesn’t spin 360 degrees does it?”
He grinned, clearly joking, what happened to them might have been a miracle, but he wasn’t ready to start believing in angels and demons yet. “Maybe we should see what else you can do? You fell down stairs right? Can you take a punch?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. + music | Dominic nodded, ”I don’t see why not, think about it, think about what we can do.”
He held out his hands, letting a brief shower of sparks fall from his palms as he did so.
”We’ve been handed an unbelievable opportunity, we can change this world forever. I know I’m a businessman, but this isn’t even about the money, this is about the opportunity we’d be throwing away. Living in secret for the rest of our lives? Afraid that people might find out what we can do?”
He shook his head, ”I’ve never lived in fear of everything, I’ve never allowed myself to. Why should what people think dictate our lives. It doesn’t if we don’t let it.”
Dominic was charismatic, and the others couldn’t help but be carried along with his energetic imagination.
“Why can’t we fight crime? Who would really want to go up against that?”
He threw a thumb over his shoulder to indicate the destroyed shelves and the faintly smoking boxes.
”We just need to begin.”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. + music | The explosion had been entirely unexpected. Dominic had, at this point, been resigned to Alice not joining the rest of them with powers. After all, he, Mason, Claire and Persephone had all demonstrated some dramatic change in their lives. It had been days, and up until this point there had been no indication that Alice had any superhuman abilities, and yet here she was apparently throwing metal shelves across warehouses. They were tall, and heavy, and built to survive life in a busy warehouse. They probably weighed more than he did. They certainly weighed more than the skinny blue haired teenager who had just sent it soaring across the room.
He grinned, impressed. He was always happy to be surprised, especially if it was something like this. Maybe his ideas really would come to fruition.
He could help but laugh at the scene that developed. Alice was suddenly yanked off the floor and into the air, while Mason’s voice echoed through the cavernous space. It was a strange sight, Alice swaying back and forth in mid-air, apparently unaided.
”OK OK guys…”
Still grinning, he walked towards the two as they were celebrating.
”That… was seriously cool Alice… and I thought my power was awesome.”
It was hard not to get caught up in Alice and Mason’s excitement, not that he was trying to avoid it.
”Seriously though, we need to get you a better name than Prom Queen…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic took one, long look at where Mason's voice had come from, and simply said, "no."
Then he grinned. They at least seemed to have joined his train of thought, they were still a few carriages back, but they were at least on the right track. Being mascots or simple celebrities wasn't enough, it would be a waste of this living comic book situation. The chances for publicity and sponsorship were endless, all they had to do was make sure they didn't actually get involved in serious crime. Stop a mugging, rescue a couple of cats from trees, and they'd be all over national news, probably even international news.
At that point the world was their oyster. If they could pick a strong name then branding would be easy, sponsorship even more so. He could envision a costumed figure on a billboard promoting a major brand. Admittedly, Mason might prove trickier when it came to that side of things, but hopefully he'd learn to control his power. Dominic could imagine how frustrating it must be to be permanently invisible.
"It's a cute idea, but I think you could come up with something with a bit more pizzazz. Plus I'm pretty sure Saran is still trademarked."
He winked at Alice, "you'd be a great cheerleader, but I wouldn't listen to his ideas for names if I were you."
He shrugged, "want to try again? You might have developed a power overnight? Notice anything unusual?"

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic nodded in agreement, clearly Alice knew a great deal more about super powers, or at least those found in comic books. He had made sure to get to know the other survivors during their brief stay in hospital. It was no surprise that when she suggested something, it came from one of the comic books she had read. That said, it was also a logical progression. Mason didn’t have to be naked in order to be totally invisible, so how did he manage that, it was unlikely that his ability had its own sense of modesty after all, and he hadn’t demonstrated any ability to instantly pass it on by touch.
He watched as a small coin flickered into existence before him. If this had been a movie he would not have been amazed by the special effects, but living it made it so much more impressive. He nodded in response to Mason’s question.
“Definitely a coin. Need me to check if it’s real?”
He smiled, humour in his voice, and then watched as the silver circle flickered through the air, catching the light from the high windows. He half expected it to drop and skitter across the ground, and was almost surprised when it instead halted in mid-air. It was held proudly upright.
Dominic and Alice stared at it.
Resolutely, something failed to happen.
He pulled a face and shook his head. ”Still a coin. Not even a little bit ghostly…”
He shrugged, and looked back to the now smouldering shelving. “How does your power feel? I mean, I can feel mine, it’s like a storm in my stomach. It wants to get out, I just need to give it a roadmap. I don’t think this is anything like just concentrating on something.”
He shrugged and walked back towards Mason and Alice, or to where Alice was anyway. “Try and explain to us what it feels like…”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Unable to turn to Mason for his visual response, Dominic resorted to making the decision for him. It was effort enough to hold back right now, he was eager to see just what he could do. He took a few steps away from the others, checking the ground to make sure they weren’t all stood in one big pool of water. There was a large duffel left on the floor behind him, he glanced at it, but elected to leave it for now, whatever it was, he clearly didn’t need it.
He picked a target, a teetering metal shelf that had been pulled away from the wall. It stood all on its own, as though abandoned by its fellows. Dominic shrugged his shoulders back and squared up to it like a boxer preparing for the greatest fight of his career. It was clearly a showman’s display, but that didn’t matter, for Dominic Weaver was nothing if not a showman. When he was happy with his performance, which would was just enough to entertain and engage, and not long enough to bore, he raised his hand.
He was trying to remember how it had felt when he’d first launched a lightning bolt across his office. To say it had felt electric would perhaps have been clichéd, but it would have been entirely accurate, now all he had to do was conjure up that feeling once more. It took a moment, but he found that reservoir again, that bubbling pool of energy that seemed to sit in the base of his stomach.
He coaxed it out, pulling it from his stomach to his chest, concentrating it there for a moment. He held it for as long as he could, but it was like trying to wrestle an eel, it writhed and struggled in his grasp. Finally he let it go, feeling it unroll down his arm into his fingers, striking forth as if it were a living thing.
For a brief moment a twisting line of plasma linked him and the shelving unit. It illuminated the entire warehouse, silhouetting Dominic before them. The smell of ozone filled Dominic’s nostrils as he turned back to the others with a smirk.
”How about that eh?”

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic had arranged for a small warehouse in SoMa. It didn’t look great from the outside, old, worn bricks and a rusting corrugated roof. On the inside it was even worse. The roof clearly leaked, there were large puddles across the floor, an oily sheen gleaming on the surface of the water. A dozen tall shelving units had been pushed against the wall, some of them still with half collapsed boxes on them.
Dominic had bought up what was left of the lease from a man who looked like he had been sampling the last of the stock he had been keeping in the run down building. He’d paid in cash, and the man he had paid would have paid in cash, and so on and so forth until it was tracked all the way back to a shell company that was probably owned by a billion dollar corporation in another country. Dominic wasn’t accustomed to acting in the shadows, but he understood enough about the business world to find somewhere that couldn’t be easily traced back to him. Not that it would have meant anything to a serious investigator, but he wanted to make sure that no one else got onto his multi-million dollar idea before he’d convinced the other’s to come on board.
“It’s nothing special, but it should do just as somewhere to test out our powers before we decide what to do with them.”
He looked down at the damp floor, “although I recommend that you all make sure you guys are earthed before I do anything, I don’t really want to electrocute you guys after all…”
He turned back to the others as they entered. “So, who’s going first?”
