Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Surge thought it would be fair to say that nobody had expected Paladin to hug the Doctor, although in hindsight he supposed it was deserved. The woman, whoever she truly was, had saved all of their lives. Even so he was hesitant. She'd virtually brought them back from the dead, literally in Paladin's case. She'd given them miraculous, impossible abilities, introduced them to a world that shouldn't exist. And through all of that, they still didn't know why she had done it.
Surge was a simple man, and he knew that people were simple, they wanted things. He'd made it his life's work to work out what it was they wanted before they did. He couldn't read this woman in the way he could read everyone else, and that worried him. They might be powerful now, but she had demonstrated abilities on a level that dwarfed theirs, like some benevolent God. The problem was that Gods weren't human. He wondered if the Doctor, with all her power, was still truly human, or if she had gone on to become something else. Something more perhaps…
The heavy man who had answered the door was in complete contrast, he looked like the stereotypical neckbeard. As if she had simply selected any one of a vast array of keyboard warriors as her ally. This man was easier to read, and there was an air about him that suggested there was a lot more to him than met the eye. In truth that air seemed to exude from everyone he had met since the accident. This man seemed perfectly comfortable in himself though, not abashed in the slightest, despite his complete difference in manner and dress to the Doctor. She in a white lab coat and suit, he in baggy sweats. It was somehow unnerving.
His eyes traced the strange machinery that filled the space. It was complicated, and far beyond his rudimentary knowledge of such things, though several pipes appeared to lead from a contraption on the gantry in the centre, connecting to something high above them in the darkness. He couldn't begin to imagine what its purpose might be. Whatever it was though, it didn't look good, it looked like some kind of dooms day device built by a comic book villain.
He smiled, his irresistibly charming face lighting up. His teeth looked even brighter against his predominantly dark costume. Stepping forward, he drew attention to himself deliberately, wanting to regain control of the situation before something unfortunate happened.
"We're all grateful for what you did. We owe our lives to you."
He shrugged, "I'm not even sure I'd understand the answer if I asked why though. So I'll just ask what's happening here? It looks a bit ominous…"
The Doctor smiled at him, then gestured around at the – for want of a better word – facility they were currently stood in.
"It seems melodramatic, but I had always had a flair for the theatrical. This is the culmination of my life's work. Or at least the last hundred and fifty years of it."
Surge's eyes widened at how casually she mentioned such a scale of time. Just how old was this woman? How powerful was she?
"So what is it?"
She smiled faintly at him, as if he should have already worked it out.
"It's the great equaliser, a return to the proper way of things. There are so many of you out there. People like you. People who don't know their heritage. People who have never known what is theirs by right because of the cowardice of their ancestors."
She paused, taking a moment to regain control of herself. If that's what it was. It wasn't the kind of slip that any normal person would make, but he could only think that some aspect of her power allowed her to control her emotions as well. Surge nodded slowly.
"You're going to give them powers as well?"
The Doctor shook her head, "No. I'm not giving them anything but a chance. The powers are there, just beneath the surface. You all had them, they were just dormant. Sleeping. This," she gestured at the machines behind and around them, "Will just awaken them."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Surge flexed his fingers in the strangely metallic material of his gloves. Stephen had assured Alice, and then Alice had assured him that it could conduct electricity, and it had fulfilled its purpose every time they had gone out. It hadn't been cheap either, although he was more than aware of the benefits of investment. After all, no gloves might have led to scarring his knuckles every time he punched someone, not to mention the problems leaving fingerprints could have caused with the SFPD.
Shortly after the video of Paladin leaping thirty feet into the air had been released online the police department had released their own statement. Vigilantism was frowned upon, heavily, and anyone caught in the act would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. He wondered how much of that reaction was to do with what they were doing, and how much was a result of cops on the take informing that decision. He knew that Overwatch had taken down a lot of the corruption in the SFPD before he was discharged, but greed was tenacious, and it always found a way in.
He looked at the concrete before them, seeing the shadow of a tunnel in the smooth grey. Overwatch had found out about this place, Surge still wasn't sure exactly how, but he'd worked out that this was where the Doctor was, and that something big was about to happen.
Surge hadn't been sure about coming in costume, or indeed, coming at all. Paladin and Spectre had pushed for it however. Two of the group had now met this mysterious Doctor, and he had to admit that he was intrigued. She had saved his life, saved all of them. These abilities he now wielded were gifts from her. That and he was suspicious of what was really going on. Overwatch's story of what had happened in the mysterious metahuman bar had been confusing, but it had revealed that whatever the Doctor was doing, it went a lot further than the six of them.
The tunnels were pretty well hidden from civilisation. He looked to the others, feeling trepidation at what could lie ahead. These tunnels looked like they had been abandoned decades ago, and only received attention from urban adventurers and the occasional photographer. It really was the perfect place to get up to no good.
He started up the concrete slope, taking the lead. The tension was building in his chest, and he really had no idea what to expect.
The mouth of the tunnel gaped, half submerged in concrete beneath the overpass. There was little sign of habitation but when he looked closer he realised that the doors just inside the yawning opening were new. They glinted dully in the dim light and he realised they were steel, and from the look of it, very heavy. Someone had been up here recently, and apparently they did not want to be disturbed. There were flecks of concrete where the hinges had been bolted into the rock, and the exposed concrete was still pale. Nature hadn't had enough time to weather it.
He shrugged, looked at the others, and knocked.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic always kept an eye on trends; in fact, he had an entire department dedicated to it. In the modern age, you had to be quick, trends could rise and fall in a matter of hours, let alone days, and it was important to ride the opportunity when it came. Dominic had grown up with it, and it was one of the reasons he had been so successful.
In this case, he had spotted it even before they had.
The video was viral in a matter of hours, as videos in that way are, and he didn't let it drop from there. It only cost him three hours and five hundred dollars to get video from a camera mounted on the building across the street. Then another five hundred to encourage the guard to 'lose' the original copy.
That video had joined the first in a meteoric rise to the front page of Youtube, Facebook, Reddit, Tumblr and Twitter. If it was a relevant social media platform, those two videos, and later mashups were on it. It had been carefully edited of course, Dominic might not have been a technical wiz, but he knew people who were, and it hadn't taken them long to remove the car's license plate. That only left the clear evidence of a human being leaping twenty feet without breaking a sweat.
He'd made sure the others knew of the videos, even if he hadn't been entirely forthcoming about the origin of the second. This could be big. They might just be patrolling the back streets of San Francisco right now, but inevitably this was going to get bigger, and he had to get ahead of it before someone else had the chance. It was easy to see, just look at all of the Spiderman branded merchandise, Superman, Batman, they essentially printed money. If they were real, that would mean just so much more, society itself would be forced to change, and Dominic Weaver would be at the helm.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Surge cried out as Alice fell from the roof, starting forward to the point she would hit as if there was anything he could do. He stared in horrified fascination as she fell, unable to tear his eyes away. She looked remarkably peaceful once she hit. There was no horrible noise, her body didn't seem to change. Alice was simply lying on the ground.
Then she sat up. He stopped, trying to process what he was seeing. Surely from a fall like that she should at the very least be in tremendous pain. She looked… fine, as if she'd simply fallen onto her bed, not off the side of a building. He backed up as she stood, amazed to find that not only was she alive, but she appeared to be totally unharmed from the fall.
He watched in awe as she turned back to the building and suddenly leapt into the air, going far higher than any human should be capable of. She disappeared in through a window higher up on the warehouse. He turned back to Duchess and Ink, he couldn't leave her and Overwatch to fight alone. He reached down beside Ink to pop the hood of her car, then with a heave he managed to wrench the damaged piece of metal away from the engine. He found the battery and placed his fingers over the connections.
There was a subtle fizzing noise, then a spark. A moment later he stepped back, electricity running through him. He turned to Duchess. "Can you look after her? I've got to see if I can get in to help the others."
Without waiting for an answer Surge turned to go back into the alleyway. He paused at the entrance, seeing a handful of men still there, then he stepped further in, out of sight of the street. There was a hiss then air split with a thunderous crack. Blue light flared out of the alleyway, followed by a series of thumps.
Surge glanced at his hands, then back at the three collapsed men. Perhaps he had put a little too much juice into that one, but they were all still breathing, even if one of them was smoking a little. He jogged to the door into the building, looking around to make sure the area was clear before ducking inside to help.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Surge turned at the roar of the engine and the scream of crumpling metal. The scene that greeted him was surprising. It looked like Ink had used her car as an impromptu battering ram, driving it headfirst into the alleyway. Two men lay on the ground, one with his arm twisted into a decidedly unnatural position. The third was slowly picking himself up.
Surge couldn't see the front of the car from where he stood, but it didn't appear that Ink was moving, and the man climbing to his feet besides the vehicle didn't look particularly entertained. He was scrabbling about, and Surge realised that the black object on the ground near him was a gun. He swore and started to run.
The man finally got his hands on the gun, then started fiddling with the slide. Perhaps the fall had damaged it, Surge didn't know much about guns, but he was just grateful that there was a problem with this one. Then there was an explosion. The man had gotten the firearm working, and a bullet seared past Surge. He flinched, stumbling in shock from how close the shot had been, but he kept running. The man fired again, missing once more. He obviously wasn't a good shot, and Surge was grateful for the poor quality of criminals today.
Sparking, his fist collided with the man's chin. He probably didn't need to hit him so hard, as the residual charge sent the man sprawling on the concrete. He twitched a moment, and then stopped moving. Surge's eyes widened for a moment behind his mask, and then he let out a sigh of relief as the man's chest moved. He was unconscious, not dead.
He rubbed his knuckles ruefully, they had split where he'd hit the hard bone of the thug's chin, and he could feel the faint heat of blood within his gloves. It was better than a bullet wound. Realising that things were still happening, he moved to the side of the car. Ink was sat still in the seat, but closer examination showed that she was in fact still conscious, obviously just shaken by what she'd just done.
He opened the door, reaching out to shake her shoulder, "You OK?"
He stepped back to give her space to climb out of the car, if she wanted, and looked at the building, before dragging his eyes all the way to the top. There was a shock of blue hair at the edge of the roof.
"Shit."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Instinct had taken over, which in this case may well have been fortunate. The man carrying a gun had rounded the corner first and Surge had acted without thinking. It might not have been the best move, a bolt like that was a good portion of his juice, but it had at least taken one firearm out of the equation. Not that it made the situation that much better. There was still a large group of thugs crowding into both ends of the alley. There was a crack of splintering wood and he glanced over, seeing Paladin disappearing through a doorway. It was a good idea, if they were trapped in here things would go bad for them, super powers or not. At least if they could lose the group in the warehouse they might have a hope of making it out in one piece.
Fortunately his earlier display seemed to have made most of the group wary, with only one brave enough to charge past him and through the door. The explosion of a gunshot inside the building gave them further pause, and Surge seized the opportunity, barrelling back towards the end of the alley Ink was parked at.
He laughed with maniacal glee and held out his hands behind him, sparks falling from his palms as he ran. It had exactly the effect he hoped for and they tried to back desperately out of his way, colliding with one another in their panic. He jabbed one lightly as he passed, causing the man to twitch and collapse as a result.
A tire iron swung for his head and he swayed to the side, though not quite fast enough. The rough metal implement caught his forehead and he stumbled, grunting in pain as the skin split. Blood fell from it almost instantly, and that sight of mortality rejuvenated the thug's courage. Three of them started after him as he ran down the street, doing his best to lead them away from the chaos of the alleyway.
He saw Ink in the front seat of her car, staring wide eyed in his direction. She'd been against this from the start, and right now he was beginning to see her point of view. He banked to the left, hoping the guys following him would continue to do so, leaving Ink safe.
He spoke into his cheap Bluetooth earpiece as he ran, "Now would be a great time to get out of here"
He could only hope that Claire would do so and wouldn't entertain ideas of taking these guys on.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic walked confidently down the alley. He didn't see the point of creeping around, not when they had a man who was far better at it than he could ever hope to be. After all, Mason was invisible to the naked eye. He wondered for a moment if Mason could be seen through infra-red, or if he had vanished from that spectrum as well. He would have been extremely surprised if the average street thug was carting around a set of thermal goggles. His eye was caught by the faint splash and image of a footprint in a dirty pool of water. It was a strange sight, to see the water pull itself back and form into a clear boot print. It wasn't quite as strange to hear his voice emerge from thin air, Dominic and the others had plenty of time to get used to that experience after all. Dominic was about to reply to the other man's question when Will spoke. "Well that doesn't sound great…"Dominic looked around, wondering what was coming, who was coming. Will's power was vague, but as far as they could tell it did seem able to pick up when people had harm in mind. Whatever Will was sensing meant that someone had some dangerous intentions in mind. "Can you feel where? There might be someone who needs help?"He looked back at the others. They looked odd in their costumes, and he wondered if he would ever get used to it. This wasn't supposed to be something you saw in real life. This was an image you saw on the front cover of a comic book, or a movie poster. Yet here they were, living it. "This is why we chose to do this. If someone needs us now then I'm not going to back out. We can get Mason to check ahead for us. If it's too dangerous then we just call the police and try to make sure no one get hurt. This is why we're here…"___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Three cars had pulled up a couple of blocks down from the group. The men that climbed out looked like they had a particular purpose in mind, and that the target of that purpose would regret ever being involved. Most if them, if they had been walking down the street, would not have drawn a second look. They were average looking people, wearing jeans and t-shirts, some tattooed, some with earrings. What really gave it away was the look in their eyes, and the worryingly large amount of improvised weapons of personal destruction. One or two were carrying guns, though the weapon of choice appeared to be more personal, ranging from baseball bats to tire irons to crowbars. There was a man waiting for them. He looked nervous, clutching a smartphone in one hand. He said something, and gestured up the street. One of the thugs, for that was all they could be called, glanced at the others and grinned. He gestured in either direction, and the group split up. They would corner the group of fools who'd thought to mess with business. They'd regret ever putting on those stupid costumes. It didn't take them long, and one group had appeared from a street barely ten feet down from Claire's car. The other group was maybe twenty feet away from cutting off Mason's escape from the alleyway. They would be trapped. | © seadra of gs |

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Surge flexed with a smirk, his suit rippling over his frame. Dominic was not a particularly buff guy, but he looked after his body, and it showed. He moved with the easy grace of someone who was accustomed to time in the gym, and now that he was wearing a near skin tight suit his wiry musculature was obvious. Then he stopped, turning to Will.
"No, I'd rather not be thought of as just another comicon attendee. Although I don't think anyone would maintain that opinion once we showed them that we're the real thing."
He knew that things were going to get more difficult now, after all, whatever they had interrupted had looked like a serious crime deal. The guy that they, Paladin he reminded himself, had nearly put in the hospital had been carrying enough meth to supply a three week bender, for twenty people. It must have been hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of drugs. Surge might not be a cop, but he was no fool, and no gang lost that kind of merchandise and just rolled over. Someone, somewhere would be mad.
The way things were going seemed to be more in Paladin's direction. The slender, blue haired girl was becoming more and more the epitome of a superhero. Dominic might have been in this for the potential profit, but Surge was being slowly pulled into the naive, but irresistible ambitions of the youngest member of the group. Maybe this was why he hadn't brought up the idea of becoming publicly known recently. Or maybe it was because he was worried of the repercussions that might come with it.
If they were well known then someone would notice if they disappeared, but then that was just the problem wasn't it. He doubted that organised crime would take kindly to people dressing up and ruining their bottom line. An enemy in the public eye made it that much easier to send a message.
"Besides, you've obviously got a knack for picking out people that we should be paying attention to Spectre. Maybe tonight we'll happen on a cartload of coke, we'll have to start applying to the city for a salary if we keep it up like this."
He looked around the group as they pulled on the last parts of their costumes.
"I gotta say… we look good…"
He pulled open the door into the San Francisco night.
"Let's go kick the shit out of some criminals…"

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It was an agreement at least. It might not be wholehearted, and it was only to one part of his plan, but it was an agreement. Maybe if things went a bit further he could convince Will himself to get involved. It was a relief. Dominic hadn't exactly grown up in a nice part of the city, but he'd be lying to himself if he pretended he knew how to survive on the streets. It had been years since he'd done anything even approximating that. It was pretty clear that Mason had never had to do anything of the sort and while Alice might have grown up without parents, he doubted she had that much experience of surviving on the streets.
Dominic certainly didn't want them getting hurt on his conscience, and in truth he doubted he could convince them not to go through with it now. They were too excited, too inspired by the idea of saving lives. He couldn't blame them, the thought was intoxicating. He would have found it hard to resist the call himself. He knew that Will would likely be selling himself short as their potential teacher. It would be accurate of course, they'd be much better placed with a professional instructor. Will was the best they had though. There were no professional instructors in being a hero, and certainly none that would help the group of prospective vigilantes.
He nodded, "I can do that. You'll just need to give me a day or two, I'm self-employed so it's easy enough for me to play hooky. Persephone and Alice have jobs though, so we'll need to give them a little more warning."
He grinned now that his idea was coming together. Surely Will wouldn't be able to hold out against the combined enthusiasm of Alice and Mason for long.
"I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot more than you think."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic shook his head. Will's depression was understandable, if a little unreasonable. He was a Private Investigator, before that he had been an SFPD detective. His life revolved around finding the answers. It was clear that he was a little obsessive about it, perhaps more so than was quite healthy. If Dominic had been a less observant man he might have commented on this, fortunately that wasn't quite how he had made his wealth, or his friends.
"Look, if what they told you is true, then these people have been hiding for centuries. They're probably pretty damn good at it by now."
He stood from his seated position, and glanced over towards the older man.
"You're not just going to blow this open over-night. Now you said that every fairy story we heard, every conspiracy theory about aliens came from one of them. Maybe that's where you start. We ignore the people who talk about Area 51, who are convinced that the government is hiding aliens from us. I'm sure some of them are just crazy. But what about the ones who aren't? What about the ones who actually got caught up in all of this? Maybe a few of them, maybe just one of them is actually onto something."
He smiled at Will, "You've only had a few weeks, they might have had years, decades to get all of it together, they're just waiting for that last bit of information to piece it all together. You might have that last clue. You gotta stop thinking you have got to have the answers. Maybe someone else does?"
He shrugged, looking about the warehouse. It wasn't the most awe inspiring of super hero hangouts, but it was a start. He and Mason were finding things to add to it, materials, machines, even a few pots of paint. If it looked better it would feel better.
"I know you don't approve of this super hero thing, but in truth, it might be out of my hands now. It was out of my hands from the moment this thing started. Alice and Mason aren't going to wait around for us to work out what's going on. We need you. If not to join us, then to at least prepare us."
He looked directly at Will this time, he needed him to know how important this was.
"We might have powers, but we aren't indestructible. Could you at least help us with training or something?"

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | "You can say that again. Will, she brought us back from the dead. I have about enough juice to jump start a car. And I don't recharge that quick. The thought of her vanishing into a closet really doesn't surprise me, although I would have expected her to be a little classier."
He smiled faintly.
"This isn't something that we can forget, our world has changed forever, and these people that want us to pretend that it hasn't? They can go f**k themselves."
It was rare that Dom swore but in this case it was warranted. These were people he had never met telling him how to live his life. The government might do the same thing but at least they had the common decency to stand up to be counted when asked why. Dom wasn't a particularly aggressive person, he didn't hold grudges.
"What do you have? I'm no Sherlock Holmes but I do have friends in odd places. I might be able to help with something."
Dom brushed over Will's bitterness. If his idea was to work, he need him. Will was probably the most important one after all. Alice might be bulletproof now, but none of them had any experience of what they wanted to do, and that meant that someone was bound to get hurt. Will was ex-police. He'd been good, Dominic had looked him up. He clearly had the right kind of drive. After he'd lost his job he'd made sure that the corrupt echelons of the SFPD paid the price. He didn't need payment for what he did. That and his power, danger sensing? If that couldn't keep them out of trouble Dominic didn't know what could. Dom might be more of a leader, but Will would be the one who made sure this whole thing would actually work.
"We need someone like you. Someone who has actually seen that side of the city. Now I'm not saying we go on the news with our powers or something. If we get caught on camera using them though, well that's not something I would be opposed to."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | "It's difficult to explain if I'm honest."
Alice had done her best to go through her own thoughts on her ability, and he supposed what she'd said made sense. It was similar to what they had thought when they'd first seen it demonstrated, but she'd had some time to experiment on her own. Added to that was the fact that this power was now part of her and he was inclined to trust her reasoning.
"If she gets hit it doesn't do any damage to her, and she absorbs the energy from it. Then she can use that energy, kinetic energy on something else."
He gestured towards the nearest pile of crumpled metal. It was piled up against the wall of the warehouse as though hurled there by some great force.
"That was her. Who knew a girl that skinny could pack so much of a punch, be glad we're all too old for her, I would not want to be the guy that stood her up."
It was amazing, Will was almost like a computer, taking all of that information and filing it away carefully for use later. Dominic wouldn't have been surprised if he was using all of it in some sort of elaborate corkboard construction like you saw detectives using in movies. Perhaps with a single word at the centre of it. 'Doctor'.
"I'm still surprised that you're the only one that's been contacted. If they're willing to talk to us you'd think they'd try and find more of us, but I haven't seen any of them, and the others haven't mentioned anything."
He sat down on a slightly more stable pile of wreckage, careful to avoid any sharp edges lest they fray his expensive suit.
"I'm wondering whether we want them to find us though. It sounds like they're some kind of secret society hell-bent on keeping this secret from the rest of the world. I'm not ready to do that. People deserve to know, and Alice and Mason are eager to use their abilities to help people. It doesn't sound to me like this 'Doctor' is too eager to keep things secret either."
He shrugged thoughtfully, "Maybe we should go looking for them? Then we get to decide what terms we meet on."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Will's response was met with a raised eyebrow. In fairness, Will hadn't made it sound as though it were simply an everyday occurrence for him, but it seemed as though Will had already begun on Dom's plan without even waiting to hear what it was. Certainly none of the others had started anything. At least as far as he knew, it wasn't as if he was having them followed.
His power sounded… strange. Like some sort of precognition. No, not telling the future. It sounded more like Spiderman. He had those Spidey-senses, letting him know when someone was about to attack him. Maybe Will had the same thing, only it worked for other people as well.
"Sounds like Spiderman. He can do that can't he? Feel things that are about to happen…"
He walked deeper into the warehouse, then turned back to his older companion, not entirely surprised to see the man pacing. It was clear that Will's intellect didn't enjoy being confined; it needed room to spread its wings. He allowed the private investigator to work through his own thoughts for a moment, before he spoke again.
Mine was easy. Electricity doesn't want to sit still, it wants to go somewhere. All I really have to do is open the gates and give the power its head."
Mason's had been even easier, in some ways anyway. He had simply woken up invisible, although he seemed to have no control of it beyond that. Alice didn't seem to have any trouble accessing hers, though there was certainly no fine manipulation involved in it.
"Alice discovered hers by accident. And to be honest we're not really sure how hers works either. It's already pretty obvious that science doesn't have a lot to do with these powers. Maybe explaining them is the wrong thing to do."
He shrugged, "You just have to understand them… I know that sounds weird, but if these abilities are part of who we are now, then there's no way you'd ever be able to fully explain them. No human being is simple enough to be put down on paper. Maybe we should stop trying to do that and things will make more sense."

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It had been a strange few weeks; a catastrophic accident, a world changing revelation, and a dark and damp warehouse. One of those things was not like the others. Dominic smiled to himself as he parked his car. It was a few blocks down from the warehouse he'd leased. Some might call him paranoid, but he didn't see the harm in being cautious with what was rapidly becoming his investment. Dominic could certainly be classified as wealthy, and his workaholic nature meant that he rarely spent that money beyond paying his rent. That said, his resources were not endless, fortunately the man who had held the lease for the old and decrepit building had clearly not been using it for any legal purposes, so he'd picked it up for a comparative song.
He whistled tunelessly as he rounded the corner into the narrow alley running alongside the warehouse, spotting the tall slim figure in the middle. He raised a hand in greeting as he drew closer, recognising Will. The PI looked different, something about the way he held himself, the look on his face. Will's job might be about discovering things people didn't want you to know. But Dom's life lived and died in reading the secrets in people's faces.
His grin, never far away, reappeared.
"You got one didn't you? A power."
It was obvious, and his grin grew wider as he produced a set of keys from his pocket, letting the two of them in through the steel plate door, the most solid part of the entire building. Clearly the previous tenant hadn't liked the idea of being disturbed.
"Come in come in, we can talk in here."
He let them in, revealing the large open space, shallow puddles and collapsed storage units that made up what Alice and Mason were insistent on calling their 'Batcave'. He could see where they were coming from, although the building was lacking in two crucial details.
"This is just somewhere that we can practice our powers, it's definitely come in useful for me. The cleaners were about to start asking awkward questions about the scorch marks. I'd just stay away from the puddles if I were you, I don't want to electrocute you by accident.
He turned back to Will as the PI closed the door behind them, the handle clicking as it locked automatically.
"So, what happened?

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dom watched with a raised eyebrow as Alice stepped up to the table. She'd obviously been taking tips from him, as she shook her arms out dramatically. Like a boxer stepping into the ring. He certainly couldn't blame her; he'd be doing exactly the same thing in her position. Albeit with a little more panache.
He heard, rather than saw, her challenger stepping up to the table. The sudden movement was as much a surprise to him as to Alice, but her hand suddenly stopping was not. He'd tried punching her, and it had felt as if he was tapping a pillow. It was quite a nasty sounding crack as Mason's invisible extremity hit the surface of the table, and Dom resisted the urge to take a concerned step forward.
"Well that is certainly interesting. I wonder what else it lets you do?"
He would have to rely more on Alice in this, none of them had any real experience in science, but Alice was the closest they had to a super hero expert. After all, that was what they were going to be, at least in the public eye. They might be able to look the part easily, having costumes made wasn't difficult, but they needed to be able to perform the part as well, and that meant they needed to train their powers first.
"I think you wrote a check with your mouth you couldn't cash, now I have to go out and find a Tiara so she can feed it to you. You guys do know I have a job on top of this right?"
His eyes twinkled with humour though, it was exhilarating. Everything was changing, and here he was, right at the centre of it, riding the wave.
