Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “So I guess it’s the same with you guys as well?”
Alice held up her unmarked arms as if offering them for inspection.
“You remember the crash but there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with you?”
She stepped forward a little, edging around Claire’s shoulder. These guys seemed relatively harmless, one of them was grinning, looking as at home as anyone could in the strangely eclectic costume he had assembled. The other didn’t seem as relaxed, but hardly radiated danger.
She smiled back at the other two girls, none of the newcomers seemed threatening to her, but it looked like they had all experienced the same crash and somehow the same miraculous recovery. It was like they all shared the same overworked guardian angel. It was strange to think that something could be watching over them, but comforting at the same time, after all, what else could explain everything that was happening?
The sounds of the hospital were audible now, it seemed that they were a little out of the way of everything else, but every so often another noise bounced down the corridor towards them. There was the sudden sound of echoing footsteps, they paused, then suddenly broke into a run behind them.
Alice turned, seeing a man in a long white coat, looking exhausted but nonetheless running towards them. He looked tired, there were dark shadows beneath each eye, but somehow he still managed to look energised and enthusiastic, although that energy seemed to come from looking at the small group in the corridor.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + music | The kitchen wasn’t well stocked with food, though it seemed to have plenty of pots, pans and other implements. Alice eyed the contents of the fridge, then went through the cupboards, discovering little that thrilled her. She’d have to get extra creative to make anything that was more complicated than bacon sandwiches. She poked her head back into the other room, seeing Claire’s hand vanishing back into her pocket.
“Hey… you guys like pancakes? I know it’s supposed to be breakfast, but you’ve not got much in.”
It worried her that Claire looked almost guilty, but she pushed it to the back of her mind, she didn’t have to tell her everything after all. Even so, she felt a little hurt that Mason and Claire were keeping something from her. She pulled out a pan, and began to clatter about in the kitchen. She found the experience therapeutic, calming. It was like she was finally getting back to something approaching normality. At least partly. This was a much nicer kitchen to work in than the tiny set of cabinets and counters in the corner of her studio. She’d have to call the kitchen and explain where she had been for the last week, hopefully somebody would have put two and two together, she hadn’t even thought about it. She’d have to call… Steven!
“Hey Claire, do you have a phone I could use? I have to call a friend…”
Phone in hand, Alice dialled a number she knew by heart, Steven had been her best friend in school. They’d even briefly dated, although it really hadn’t worked out, as childhood romances often didn’t. They were still friends though, and she couldn’t really think of anyone else she was really close to.
He picked up on the second ring.
“Hey! Long time no speak, how’s it going Pally?”
Alice almost didn’t know what to say, apparently Steven hadn’t realised that she’d been in the accident, after all, they were both busy. Alice trying to pay rent, and Steven trying to convince his parents that fashion was an appropriate major for him in College. She was having more success.
“Alice… yoohoo… you ok?”
Concern crept into his voice as she failed to answer. Then she realised that she hadn’t said anything.
“Hi.. sorry… I’ve just been…”
Should she tell him that she’d been in the pileup, that she’d been brought back from the dead? How could she explain all of that while in perfect physical condition?
“Just been suuper busy, thought it might be nice to have a quick chat though. I haven’t seen you in a while…”
She continued to work in the kitchen while on the phone, leaving the other two to their conversation. | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + music | Alice paused the current episode of ‘Bob’s Burgers’ that was playing on the large TV, jumping up, eager to be helpful.
“Sure!”
She padded softly into the kitchen, looking quickly around at what was a small, but pleasant little room with fitted units and a large refrigerator. She pulled open the heavy door, feeling the cold wash over her, it was refreshing, and she basked in the icy air for a moment before she grabbed a couple of soda’s from the interior. She added a bottle of beer to her haul before closing the heavy white door and rummaging in the drawers for a bottle opener.
It only took her a moment, and she returned with two cans and the bottle, now open. She paused in the doorway.
“You guys ok?”
The cans and bottle clinked gently against each other as she set them down on the table, beads of condensation rolling down the frosted sides to pool on the tabletop. She opened one for herself, draining half in one, before wiping her mouth and looking sheepishly at the other two.
“I brought one for you Claire, in case you wanted one, and there’s a beer…”
She gestured awkwardly at the two remaining drinks on the table, pathetically eager to please.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Claire’s apartment was significantly nicer than her own, it was larger for a start. Alice’s was currently a tiny basement studio that the home had set her up with when she left. It was cheap, and as a result it was nasty, the home had simply let her go and forgotten about her.
This looked like a proper home though. There were DVDs crowded on a shelf under the TV, and a pile of magazines on the counter top. The table had a faint stain in the corner, but otherwise was kept clean. It was a far cry from her old room in the orphanage, or indeed the room she had now. She took the remote she was offered, and sat down in a corner of the couch to flick through the offerings of Netflix.
She smiled at Mason, she’d been shaken in the hospital, quiet. It had been so clinical, even with the others, they’d had to wear gowns and stay in rooms away from everything else. It was like they’d been quarantined. It was difficult to stay upbeat in such a situation, but Mason’s concern and the relentless charisma that had flowed off Dominic in waves had eventually gotten to her. The final brick in the foundation had been escaping the hospital, she didn’t want to think how close to death she might have been.
“Do you want to watch anything in particular?”
She paused awkwardly at his question. How was she doing? All she’d realised is that she didn’t really have anyone that would miss her that much. She supposed Stephen would, she had at least one friend who would mourn her passing, pathetic though it might be.
“I… I dunno…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The blue haired girl was beginning to feel even further out of her depth now, not that she was going to show that. Apparently two days ago she’d been drugged out of her mind, and Claire must have been in almost as worse a state judging by her reaction to her own chart. The dark-skinned girl seemed to be dealing with it all far better than the rest of them, though she was now looking about her bed, presumably for her own chart. There was certainly no comfort to be found in either of her companions, and Alice pulled the door open. Maybe actually doing something would help get them answers a little faster than standing around here.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + confused + music | “Uuuhhhh…”
Alice scanned the chart, doing her best to decipher the writing that was so cramped and messy it could almost be a different language. There was something noted down that looked like it might refer to when she had entered the hospital, at least it was dated two days previous. There were only a few notes, something she either couldn’t read or didn’t understand, and then another note in medications administered.
“I… was on morphine…”
She looked up at the other two, “that doesn’t sound good… don’t they only use that when people are dying or something?” | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + confused + music | Not wanting to be left out, Alice piped up with her own name, though the older woman, Claire apparently, was already moving to the door. Alice moved away from the side of her bed, totally ignoring the request to stay where she was. After all, she’d been in the same accident, and she wasn’t just going to sit around while someone else found out what was going on.
She couldn’t see past the other girl’s back out into the corridor, though she could hear something, a brief murmur of voices before the click of a door closing. Footsteps padded softly down the hall, away from their door. It sounded like a nurse had just come out of the room opposite.
“Can you see anything?”
Her whisper seemed very loud in the sudden silence of their room, the machines had simply faded into the background, becoming almost a soundtrack to the scene. She stepped back to allow Claire space, then looked over to Persephone. She didn’t seem half as perturbed as the older woman.
Alice was still holding the chart, she looked at it again, “I mean, it’s got some notes on it here, from when I was brought in… I think…”
The chart was written in typical illegible doctor’s handwriting, but she could still make out some of what was written.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + confused + music | Alice felt some relief when it became apparent that she wasn’t the only one who remembered the crash. Presumably that was why they were here, though the complete lack of injury did not quite match up with her memories. She remembered pain, awful pain, throughout her entire body, yet couldn’t find a hair out of place now. Had she… they, all been out that long? Nothing seemed wrong with the others either.
“We must have been out a while, I mean… I remember everything hurting, but now… I… like… I feel great… I don’t think I’ve ever felt this good.”
Alice lowered herself to the floor carefully, half expecting her legs to give out underneath her. They absolutely failed to do so, and she stood confidently.
“I don’t feel any older.”
She glanced around the room, seeing nothing other than a clock, machines, and a few charts.
“You’d think they’d put a calendar in here or something. Do either of you guys have a phone or something?”
She rummaged in the drawers beside her bed, there was nothing, not even clothes, let alone her phone or other belongings. There was a vase of flowers on top of the drawers, but not a lot else. Not that there was anything for either of the other women. Alice didn’t really have anyone to visit her, she supposed Will would, but would he even know? Who would think to tell him?
She checked the chart on her bed, that was dated at least.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + awake + music | The others in the room seemed to be coming to their own senses, at least from what she could see. Fighting against the softness of the pillows, Alice sat up. The girl directly opposite her was dark haired and pale, though the cut of her hair suggested that it was supposed to be styled rather differently from how it was now.
“If we’re dead then this is a really screwed up heaven…”
Glancing around, it became obvious that there were no personal effects here. No phone, no clothes, nothing. The last thing she remembered before this room was an awful, all-encompassing pain. There had been screams and the smell of smoke in the air, this room couldn’t be any more different. It was empty, clinical, but somehow just as horrifying. At least here there were other people.
“Were you guys in… you know…”
She trailed off awkwardly, not quite sure how to ask the question. After all, what she could remember had been horrifying. Twisted metal and torn flesh, she hoped that these two hadn’t been there. She stuck her legs over the edge of the bed, wincing in anticipation of pain, but surprised to feel nothing. If anything, she felt great. Had it really all been a nightmare?
It couldn’t be, she was in a hospital… | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + waking up + music | Alice was in a nightmare, a chaos of torn metal and painful screams. The air had been filled with the smell of smoke and burning flesh, the highway a jumble of crushed cars and panicked survivors. She watched dreamily from her vantage, everything seemed so far away, like she was watching it through the wall of a fish tank, sounds muted, experiences hazy. Sirens mumbled their way into her consciousness, and the bright red blur of a fire engine pulled up a few feet away, the black jacketed men and women jumping from the cab and grabbing axes and hoses. Two of them were heading towards her, their mouths opening and shutting. She couldn’t hear what they were saying, but they looked scared. One of them hefted what looked like a massive pair of bolt-cutters.
Everything seemed so far away. She wasn’t a participant in all of this, simply an observer. It was like watching a found footage movie on the TV, in the same way that a dream often feels like some sort of on rails experience. For some strange reason this nightmare didn’t feel so horrifying. Despite the scene before her, the smells, the sounds, it didn’t seem at all unpleasant. The firemen were further away now, they looked like they were shouting at her from the mouth of a well. One of them braced himself, and the dream twisted so suddenly back into a nightmare as an awful searing pain radiated out from her chest.
Alice began to scream…
…and woke up.
She stared at the ceiling for a moment, at least it was only a dream. A strange one it was true, and she wondered what could have been on her mind to prompt such a horrible scenario. With a grown as of a Vampire Countess waking from slumber, she sat up.
She wasn’t in her room. That much was clear, and the presence of gently humming machines and the IV by her bed confirmed that this room was in a hospital. She wasn’t alone in the room, there were another three beds, two of them, she could see, were occupied, but the fourth was obscured behind a curtain.
“Shit…”
Was that nightmare more than a nightmare?
She looked down at her chest, expecting to see bandages, scars, stitching, anything. The hospital gown was all there was. Her body appeared entirely devoid of scars, cuts, even bruises. What had happened?. | © seadra of gs |

Alice Morrow I don't want to be ordinary, got too much to give [PTabbedContent] [PTab=APPEARANCE] WHO YOU SEE Hair: Blonde – Currently cut short and dyed blue Eyes: Pale Blue Skin: Pale
Attire: T-shirts and jeans, Alice doesn’t really have a style, though there are still a few band t-shirts hanging about in her collection, she rarely worries too much about what she wears, simply throwing on whatever is at the top of the pile. Her outfit is inevitably completed by a battered pair of converse hi-tops, never new, as though any pair she puts on instantly ages two years. | At a hair over five foot seven, Alice is well above average height, she’s thin, perhaps too thin, with no hips to speak of and even less chest, a constant source of embarrassment for her. She’s naturally fair, with pale skin and blonde hair, although the blonde has long since been concealed beneath hair dye. She had a rebellious emo streak in her mid-teens and hasn’t quite grown out of it yet.
She’s pretty enough if you look past the overlong fringe, although cute might be a better term. Her nose is small, almost button, and her eyes, though large, are not quite innocent, more mischievous, or downright suspicious if you believe her old teachers from school. There’s not much in the way of muscle tone on her form, she’s not an athlete, and never has been, rather being blessed with a metabolism that simply seems to absorb whatever she eats with nary a blip on her figure. |
[/PTab={background-color:#f0f0f0;width:530px;height:290px;padding:10px;padding-top:0px;margin-top:-6px;}] [PTab=PERSONAL] PERSONALITY Alice is a little bit of a weirdo, but, like most kids her age, has a group of friends to be weird with. It has become easier to be a nerd, to be interested in comic books and watch anime, because no matter what odd thing you’re into, there’s always someone who has watched it too. She gets lonely easily, and she can’t be alone, this isn’t helped by a complete absence of parents. She prefers to think that they had no choice rather than they abandoned her, but it is a deep seated fear of hers, and has coloured her personality accordingly. If anything she could be described as clingy, happier in the company of others than by herself. She’s not a natural liar, being more comfortable simply avoiding difficult questions than actually answering with falsehoods. This is not to say that she’s incapable of lying, but is bad enough that even white lies are likely to be found out easily enough, or spotted as an attempt to hurt when perhaps that isn’t intended. She is stubborn and strong-willed though, and has a clear, perhaps too clear idea of right and wrong, with an extremely black and white moral outlook. HISTORY Alice never knew her parents. Orphaned as a baby, she was discovered abandoned in a derelict house at only a few months old. She was taken in by the state, but as is often the case in such situations, was not fortunate enough to be adopted. There are a number of issues associated with growing up without parents, and though she was never a bad child, much of her early to late childhood was spent in and out of foster homes. She was sent to a local, overcrowded state school when she turned eleven, and though she had frequently changed schools when younger, here she remained at the same institution in a bid to provide some consistency in her life. It seemed to have a positive effect and she found some friends there, other than the one she had in the orphanage. Though it was awkward when the subject of parents came up, as it is wont to do in young people, it didn’t seem to be too much of a concern for her newfound companions. Her best friend, after two years in school, resolved into a boy the same age who shared most of her interests. Steven and Alice tried a brief relationship, in as much as thirteen year olds can have one, before realising that they would be better off as friends. She wasn’t a sterling student, hardly a favourite amongst teachers, and frequently getting in trouble for talking or messing about when she should have been paying attention. She wasn’t a bad child however, simply undisciplined, lacking true motivation or interest in school work. She acquired passing grades in her High School Diploma, but didn’t really have enough confidence in her own academic abilities to pursue a University degree. She does however, have a certain talent in the kitchen, though only discovered in the kitchen at her home. At the urging of her then ‘teacher’, the dinner nanny for the home, Alice applied for a catering course in the local community college. Two years on and she has proved to have something of a flair for cookery, though she wants something a little more personal than catering, and though she is still studying for her qualification, she has been looking into getting a local job as a chef when she leaves college. [/PTab={background-color:#f0f0f0;width:530px;height:290px;padding:10px;padding-top:0px;margin-top:-6px;}] [PTab=POWER] MORE TO ME THAN MEETS THE EYE ABILITY Alice’s new ability is one that you would be unlikely to associate with such a diminutive and unimposing figure. Her ability is a complex one, that interferes with the very laws of physics itself, allowing her to survive attacks no human should be able to, and deal out punishment no other human could. In short, Alice is able to absorb and release kinetic energy. Though it is a conscious effect, striking Alice allows her to absorb the kinetic energy from the attack, and redistribute it as she sees fit, such as a counter attack of her own. She can store this energy, acting effectively as a battery, and then discharge it at will. LIMITS The capacity of Alice’s absorption is not infinite, there is a limit, and when she hits that limit her ability will simply stop dead until she can discharge some of her already stored energy. She is also incapable of both absorbing and releasing energy simultaneously, she can do one or the other, but has to concentrate on that change. WEAKNESSES Alice’s ability is not passive, she is not always drawing in, or releasing kinetic energy, it is a conscious decision. This means that catching her by surprise can effectively circumvent her defensive capabilities entirely, at least until she recovers enough to react. She is also incapable of totally robbing something of its kinetic energy, at best being able to reduce it to a single joule, effective against most, but still allowing blades to cut her, though not deeply. She may be able to stop bullets, but she cannot prevent the effect of other energies, such as thermal energy from fire, or even electricity. [/PTab={background-color:#f0f0f0;width:530px;height:290px;padding:10px;padding-top:0px;margin-top:-6px;}] [/PTabbedContent={width:550px;background-color:transparent;height:300px;padding:0px;border:0px;margin-left:-3px;margin-top:-20px;text-align:justify;color:#332F28;font-size:10px;}] LÉA SEYDOUX as Alice Morrow [newclass=".PT_table .PT_tabs"]border: 0px;text-align:center;background-color: #f0f0f0;color:#333333;font:15px Oswald;text-transform:uppercase;-webkit-transition: all 0.2s ease; -moz-transition: all 0.2s ease; -o-transition: all 0.2s ease;[/newclass] [newclass=".PT_table .PT_tabs_hover"]border: 0px;text-align:center;background-color: #f0f0f0;color:#333333;font:15px Oswald;text-transform:uppercase;[/newclass] [newclass=".PT_table .PT_tabs_selected"]border: 0px;text-align:center;background-color: #f0f0f0;color:#768796;font:15px Oswald;text-transform:uppercase;-webkit-transition: all 0.2s ease; -moz-transition: all 0.2s ease; -o-transition: all 0.2s ease;[/newclass] [newclass=".PT_table .PT_tabs_selected_hover"]border: 0px;text-align:center;background-color: #f0f0f0;color:#768796;font:15px Oswald;text-transform:uppercase;[/newclass] [googlefont=Oswald]
