Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Some time earlier
Alice was late. She’d had a few days off from work, which was understandable given the fact that she’d been in a near fatal car accident. Not that her boss would be particularly understanding if she failed to turn up now that she was out of hospital. She needed this job, it wasn’t anything special, and it certainly wasn’t well paid, but it was just enough to pay the rent and feed herself most days.
She’d almost fallen out of bed when her alarm went off, and rushed her shower, her hair was still wet as she locked her cupboard sized apartment’s door behind her. There had been no time for breakfast, other than to grab a piece of fruit on her way out of the door. Slinging the bag containing her uniform over one shoulder, she hurried down the corridor. Mrs Crabble appeared at the end, waving and smiling at the blue-haired teen as she approached before turning to her own door.
Alice swung into the stairwell, caught her foot on Mrs Crabble’s bag, hidden by the corner, and lost her balance. With nothing to stop her fall she went straight forward, hands scrabbling desperately at empty air in an attempt to catch herself. It was to no avail, and Alice closed her eyes.
She opened them again at the bottom of the stairs, hearing Mrs Crabble’s quavering voice calling her name.
“Oh My Lord are you alright?”
She sat up, wondering if she had somehow broken her neck in the fall. She didn’t feel like she’d just fallen down four flights of stairs, but judging by where she was she must have done. She remembered closing her eyes, and very soft impacts on her arms and body, but no actual pain. She looked back up to see the very worried face of her neighbour peering down the stair well.
“I’m so sorry, I ddn’t think…”
She waved up with a grin, “it’s OK Mrs Crabble, no harm done, just a quick fall.”
“Are you sure…”
Alice shook her head, “I’m fine, really, anyway, I’ve gotta run or I’ll be late for work!”
She jogged out of the apartment building, reflecting on how lucky she must be to have escaped from that accident without a scratch, had she not been in such a rush she might have put two and two together right then…
Alice had spent most of the day in the kitchen of the tiny greasy spoon diner that she’d worked in since high school. It wasn’t a great job, but they didn’t ask for much in the way of qualifications, and she could usually take away a little food when her wages didn’t quite cover everything. There were regulars as well, significantly more than there had been when Alice had first started, the quality of the food had climbed sharply when she’d started cooking instead of simply washing dishes.
Now though, she smiled goodbye to Alexei and Patricia, and made her way out of the diner into the bright sunlight of the San Francisco afternoon. She looked about, pulling her phone out of her satchel as she did so. There was a text there from Dominic, with an address. She was tired, but the thought of that rejuvenated her and with a wide grin she set off down the street.
She’d met up with the others outside of the deceptively small building, then followed Dominic in through the rusting doors, leaving an appropriate space for Mason to go first. She tried to resist the urge to blurt out her first thought, that this could be their batcave.
She almost glanced sideways at Mason, remembering only halfway through the motion that she wouldn’t be able to see him anyway. ”I mean, I don’t have anything, so I guess it’s you or Mason up first…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The blue haired teen perked up as it became evident that people were agreeing with her idea, at least for now. Mason had attempted a new nickname for Claire, which once again missed the mark. Alice winced in sympathy at his failed attempt to tag the other girl with a more casual name, and in sympathy for the poor girl who was in reception of it. At least Al was just a straight forward abbreviation.
“Great!”
Most people seemed in agreement that they needed to find out how exactly these strange abilities worked. The best way to do that would surely be to try it out on a patch of waste ground; or better yet, a warehouse so they wouldn’t be spotted. After all, they didn’t want to kill anyone with these abilities, and that would be scarily possible now that Dominic had become Electro.
She could almost feel the static that he was generating, and she wasn’t entirely sure if it was as a result of his new power, or just the excitement that he was clearly experiencing. Whatever it was, she could feel it starting to affect her as well. She might not have powers but at least she could be a part of whatever it was that was happening. Like Oracle in Batman, or Overwatch in Arrow.
“So where do we go?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Dominic’s words were reassuring, thanks, as was to be expected, to his irresistible charisma. She smiled a little more strongly, at least partly convinced that she wasn’t entirely left out of what was going on. They did seem to be listening to her as well, sort of. Will certainly didn’t seem to like what she was saying.
The blue haired teen jumped a little as she felt the pressure on her shoulder. It was all the more disturbing when there didn’t appear to be any source for that pressure. Then her brain clicked back into gear and she realised the only answer had to be Mason. His quiet words were, if anything, even more reassuring than Dominic’s. Even if they did come out of thin air…
She turned to smile at where she thought his face might be, after all, it was incredibly difficult to judge the position of a man that light passed through. Of course, she totally missed his encouraging smile. It seemed that the argument was just going to go around in circles, and it was stressing her out.
Looking, pointlessly to Mason for reassurance, stood up, trying to make herself heard over the others.
“Guys! We… we don’t have to like… make a decision now do we? I mean… we’ve all… most of us have these powers now. Maybe we should actually find out what exactly we can do.”
Her voice gained a little more energy, clearly excited by the idea of seeing these impossibilities in action. “You guys could like… test them out… or something…”
She trailed off.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice was disappointed, heavily disappointed. It was fairly obvious at this point that everyone other than her had developed some sort of interesting reaction to their miraculous recovery. The only one that wasn’t displaying something obvious was Will, but he seemed so entirely unsurprised by everything that was happening that he had to have some sort of power. He’d met the doctor it seemed and was now pouring out so much new information she struggled to process it all.
So there had always been people with powers? How could they have hidden away like that? Alice might have been called weird by most people, but she was no conspiracy theorist, and the thought that Spiderman could have been living down the street the whole time was a little hard to swallow.
Alice stepped forwards. “No.”
She was shaking her head, “why is it just about money? Why do you think that people will just be terrified? This is amazing!”
She looked around at the whole group, “maybe some people will be scared, but just as many will be amazed! What about all the people who dream of having someone they can look up to? Of a hero that might sweep in and save them?”
A shrug, “besides, I don’t have powers, and you guys don’t scare me…”
She sat down, her part said. It had been obvious in her last words how upsetting that had been to admit as well. It was petty, almost childish, but she couldn’t help but feel left out.
Again.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice may not have quite picked up on Mason’s jovial tone. In her defence, it was more difficult now that they couldn’t see his impish grin. Even so, she was horrified when he suggested robbing a bank with his new found power. She spluttered through her pancakes when he first suggested it, trying not to choke on her breakfast.
“You can’t do that!”
She managed to awkwardly swallow her mouthful of syrupy goodness before she put her knife and fork down.
“Mason! That is so not funny! You’re not serious are you?”
Mason’s lack of response, in every possible way, was not helping the situation. It was only Mason’s chuckle, still coming disturbingly from mid-air, that prompted the realisation that he was just teasing her. She scowled in the vague direction of where she thought he was, and picked up her plate to flounce into the kitchen. Not that it was a very effective flounce, she didn’t have the figure or the personality for it.
It was a little unnerving to watch the plates drying themselves off as though they were a leftover prop from Harry Potter. She managed to forget about them after a while and concentrate on scrubbing the pan to a point of cleanliness that likely would have made it very embarrassed were it sentient. It was clear that Claire didn’t spend much time in this kitchen, which only made Alice more jealous. She would have killed to have an apartment like this, and she found herself wondering how exactly Claire managed to pay for it while at College.
She turned as the door flew open, her eyes widening in amazement as soon as she spotted the sparks leaping between his fingers. He looked like an advertisement for Tesla Coils. She tried to glare at Mason again as a terrible pun was once more announced from thin air. It was a pointless endeavour, as try as she might, she couldn’t even spot a shimmer in the air.
She came back into the main room, drying her hands on the apron she was still wearing, trying not to show her disappointment that she seemed to be the only one without powers. Mason was invisible, Claire seemed to be super tough now, and Dominic was using his hand as a replacement light source. Persephone didn’t seem that different, and she felt a flash of guilt as she realised she was hoping that she didn’t have powers either.
“Hi guys! Dom… that is awesome… Can you like throw lightning now? What about you Persephone?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice and Claire followed Mason. Though following was perhaps too loose a term considering that they could not see him. Instead, they proceeded slowly down the corridor, wary that they might tread on his heels at any moment. Alice wondered if Mason might be naked, it would explain why there wasn’t a pair of boxer shorts floating in the air in front of them. On the other hand, she struggled to think why the relatively mild mannered man would have stripped down to sleep in a strange girl’s bedroom. Certain circumstances not withstanding of course.
A moment later both Claire and Alice were stood in the bathroom, staring at themselves in the mirror. Presumably Mason was between them and the reflective pane, but they had no way of knowing. Not until his voice once more emerged from the air.
“Definitely can’t see you… not even a shimmer.”
Alice squinted at the mirror, as though looking in a certain way might reveal Mason, she was disappointed, as the blonde man absolutely failed to appear before her.
“This is even better than the shit Elites have in Halo…”
She reached out carefully, aiming for what she was pretty sure was chest height. He was definitely there, as her fingers encountered resistance just in front of her. She could feel the fabric of his t-shirt against her fingers, and she pushed a little harder, just to check she wasn’t imagining things.
“That is so cool…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice jumped as Mason’s voice suddenly emerged from thin air. She stared at the blankets that he had been sleeping on, or rather, the space just above them where he should have been if he had sat up. The voice continued blissfully unaware of its origins in empty air. She stared confusedly around the room again, as though Mason would suddenly spring out from behind the closet and reveal his part-time job as a ventriloquist.
The simple bedroom resolutely failed to reassure her. “Mason, are you hiding?”
Mason’s voice was most definitely coming from the air before them, and not from anywhere else. That was only further confirmed by the loud rumbling of what Alice could only assume was his stomach. She took a step forward with her hand out like a blind man searching for the wall, trying vainly to spot the older man.
“Ummm… I definitely think one of us developed magic powers overnight, but it wasn’t me…”
She realised that Mason wasn’t aware of what was going on. Or at least she guessed so; it was hard to judge someone’s expression when that expression was apparently bending light. She glanced around the bedroom, and not seeing what she was looking for, turned to Claire.
“Have you got a mirror?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The apartment was quiet when Alice woke, second hand sunshine spilling in through the window to cast a splinter of light across her pillow. That silence didn’t last long, as an unearthly; earth rattling noise rang through the apartment. Alice fell off the couch, thinking for a moment that it was the beginning of the earthquake. When the floor beneath her failed to shake she realised that it couldn’t be a natural disaster, well, not that kind anyway. She clambered to her feet, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She was dressed in the t-shirt of a band she’d never heard of and a pair of grey sweats, both borrowed from Claire.
Looking around the empty room, she realised that she must be the first one up, there was no sign of Mason or Claire, but the rumbling was definitely coming from beyond the door of Claire’s room. She padded sleepily over, opening the door quietly. The heaped blankets where Mason had been sleeping were empty, though clearly slept on. Alice frowned, glancing down the corridor towards the bathroom. The door was open though, perhaps he had left earlier, going to his job or heading back to his own apartment. In truth she was a little hurt that he had just left like that, without saying goodbye. She hadn’t known him long, but she was getting to like his gentle, warm character. Even so, if Mason was gone, that left the tattooed art student as the only possible culprit.
The surprise and amusement was clear in Alice’s voice as she called out above the noise.
“Claire! Claire!”
She moved around the side of the bed to shake the other girl awake. Claire stirred, opening bleary eyes.
“Do you always sn-“

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice was both surprised, and flattered by the speed with which Mason devoured the pancakes. And devoured was certainly the world, it was more as if he’d inhaled the entire plate as opposed to wasting precious eating time on chewing. Alice herself was a healthy eater, but she was barely even close to finished before Mason. Admittedly he was significantly bigger than both her and Claire.
Alice nodded, “yeah it worked, seemed ok anyway.”
She picked up the empty plates to take them back to the kitchen, and returned a moment later with the small plastic flip phone in her hands. Realising that Claire didn’t want to call, she held it out to Mason. Then paused.
“”I could call him? I don’t mind?”
When Mason shrugged and nodded in confirmation, she opened the little device and tapped in the phone number. There was a brief dialling tone, but the phone only rang once before it was picked up. It was answered by a man, but a man who was definitely not Dominic.
“Dominic Weaver’s office, how may I help you?”
“Uh…”
Alice in panic at Mason, mouthing secretary.
“I’m ummm… ringing for Dominic…”
The man’s voice was calm and collected, if a little amused.
“That is frequently why people dial this number, may I ask who is calling?”
Alice flushed, even though the voice at the other end of the phone couldn’t see her.
“Sorry, it’s Alice… Morrow…”
There was a moment of silence, and Alice sat down beside Mason on the couch, putting the small phone on speaker as she laid it down on the coffee table. They both stared at it.
“Hello? Alice! Hey!”
There was a faint fizzle in the background, as though Dominic were entering a tunnel, then it immediately cleared up. The PR agent’s voice was tiny from the tiny speakers, but understandable when he spoke again.
“Shit… sorry… I got a little carried away… let me guess, you guys are absorbing electricity too?”
“What? No… I mean… wait! Does that mean?”
“What do you think? I just fried my computer, I had to answer the phone with my goddamned shoe. Now I just got to work out how to turn it off and on…”
There was another loud crackle over the line, the whole connection whiting out in one massive blur of static, before he returned again.
“OK… that might be it…”
Alice jumped at the chance to get a word in edgeways.
“We haven’t got any lightning, but Claire is fork-proof…”
“Do you guys know what this me-“ Another fizzle “-s? Either they put us on some pretty strong shit in the hospital, or we’re… OK… where are you guys? I’ll come to you in the morning… I gotta ring the other two.”
Claire filled in the details, and a moment later Dominic hung up. Left in silence now, the three of them stared at each other.
“So what do we do now?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice looked even more disappointed than Mason after his experiment proved a failure. She’d been sort of hoping that it would have meant they all had some sort of dramatic change thanks to their miraculous recovery. Apparently fate had conspired to disagree. She shrugged, trying to hide her disappointment.
“OK, so maybe we’re not going to be superheroes…”
Alice examined the backs of her hands, particularly the knuckles, as though hoping she would suddenly sprout wolverine like claws. Vicious adamantium blades completely failed to appear, and she dropped them to her sides with a frown. She looked at the other two.
“Well we could try giving Dom a call, he gave me his number…”
She patted her pockets, producing a business card from it. It was slick and professional, the very essence of bare minimalism, with little more than his companies name and a phone number on it in embossed silver.
“I don’t have anyone else, but Dom might have got their numbers, we could give him a call?”
Alice shrugged, “I mean, I honestly feel better than I ever remember feeling… like… ever… maybe I just got like, super healthiness or something?”
She looked to Mason for confirmation, then remembered what she had spent the last fifteen minutes doing.
“Anyway… I did make pancakes…”
The pancakes were pretty good. Although to call them simply pretty good would be an insult to great American Pancakes everywhere. Alice had added some of the syrup she’d found in the kitchen to the mix, and they were moist and sweet, still steaming slightly. Small red shapes were dotted within the pancakes themselves, and further examination would reveal them to be chunks of sliced strawberries baked into the mix.
Alice looked a little nervous, “I hope they’re ok…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “Wait what?”
Alice looked from the fork in Mason’s hand, to Claire’s flat palm, to Claire’s face, back to the fork.
“Wow, you mean..? The key?”
She looked at the key once more, had Mason done it by trying to stab Claire? That certainly seemed to be what was now being suggested. Did that mean she had somehow gotten tougher? First a miraculous recovery and now bulletproof skin?
Mason lifted his hand, the fork now aimed downwards towards the hand laid flat on the coffee table, Alice winced in sympathy and half turned away, not quite able to watch. At the same time though, she couldn’t herself to look away, and so she was caught in some sort of half-horrified, half-amazed trance.
Until it happened, there was a metallic twang, and Mason was raising a fork that was no longer the shape it was supposed to be. The tines had split different ways, and the metal of the fork up to Mason’s hand had crumpled as though it was made of tin foil, not stainless steel.
Alice stared at it in amazement, so now Claire could apparently shrug off assaults from cutlery as well as basic keychains.
“That… is so fucking awesome…”
Alice was getting more excited, “has this happened to you as well Mason?”
She turned to look at him, “oh my god, what if that healing has made us all indestructible?”
She began to pace, unable to sit down from the excitement. “Think about it, that doctor spent a few minutes with each of us, and now you’re bulletproof.”
She turned to them “oooh, what if it was like some sort of secret military super soldier program, and that’s why she disappeared, she wasn’t supposed to use it on us!”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice emerged from the kitchen with a plate full of steaming pancakes. She’d made liberal use of the few ingredients she’d found in the kitchen, and had managed to concoct what she thought wasn’t a half bad meal. She froze in the doorway; clearly she was walking in on something. Although what it was she couldn’t say, after all, it wasn’t like she’d walked in on two people making out. No, this was just weird.
The two could not have looked more different in that moment. Mason’s face was one that could almost be called awe, while Claire had gone white, or whiter anyway. She looked terrified, even as she was staring at Mason.
“What’s going on?”
Her eye was caught by something reflecting the light, a strange circle of metal held up in Mason’s fingers. She peered closer, putting the plate down on the table as she stepped into the room. It was strange, it didn’t look like it was supposed to be that shape, and from the look on Mason and Claire’s faces, whatever had happened to make it that shape was something way beyond normality. That said, normality was somewhat loosely defined for them since the crash.
It was a key, or it had been a key. Except now it was bent into a complete circle. Alice’s eyes widened in both amazement and delight.
“Oh my god!”
She moved over to them, taking the key from Mason’s hand, “how did you do that?”
She turned it over in her hands, examining it closely, it looked imperfect, as though it had been bent out of shape with one ferocious blow of a hammer. It certainly couldn’t have been done by hand, who was strong enough to just bend a key without leverage or tools?
She turned to the two of them.
“So is this like a party trick or something?”
Her light mood faltered however when faced with the horrified look on Claire’s face.
“What? What’s wrong?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice had been trying to process what had happened to her. Other than Will, who turned out to be a cop, she seemed to have the clearest recollection of what had happened to them, could remember so clearly the pain that had enveloped every inch of her body. That wasn’t what was getting to her though. She could at least think of that as just a bad memory. No, what was preying on her mind were the last words of the doctor before he had left them that first time. She’d died. Not just been close to it. They’d had to resuscitate her.
Would anyone have missed her if she’d died? She had no family, had never had a family…
“Alice?”
She looked up to see Dominic, the man smiling at her, an edge of uncertainty in his eyes. That surprised her. In their whole time at the hospital, short though it had been, she had never seen him look anything other than totally confident. She tried to smile.
“We’ll sort it out, I don’t like being kept in the dark. And you’ve probably noticed that I always get my own way.”
That made her smile a little more strongly, and he winked, before turning to climb into one of the multitude of taxis he had called on their behalf. She fidgeted awkwardly with the hem of her new t-shirt, before turning to the approaching Mason and Claire.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “Glasses... I’d have to ask your doctor, but if there’s nothing in your dresser then they probably didn’t survive…”
Alice realised that she too was dressed in nothing other than her hospital gown, a flimsy, disposable item that did little to reassure her. She clutched it about herself, realising that perhaps Mason had slightly more realistic priorities than the others.
“Yeah guys, I’d love to thank her too,” she turned back to the doctor at this point, “but can I get some clothes?”
He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “Well, we can get you a phone if you have someone to call?”
Alice refused to allow her face to drop, though her voice came out stiffly, “Not… not really...”
The man clearly realised he had made a faux pas, “well, we have a closet of used and donated clothes, I can let you in there when we discharge you.”
“I want to be discharged now.”
Frowning, he shook his head, “we can’t, we have no idea what else could be going on here.”
“I can’t…”
“Look,” he interrupted, his voice low, “you were officially dead for three minutes, we can’t just let you walk out…”
Turning to the rest of them, he held his hands up in surrender. “I’m afraid that goes for the rest of you as well, I can’t in all good conscience discharge you, and as for you guys, you’re not my patients, so that’s out of my hands anyway.”
He turned to head out the door, but paused, looking over his shoulder, sympathy in his eyes “and that nurse… her name was Michelle Franklin… I’ll send her up when I can.” | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The doctor frowned, “yeah it’s the fifth, but… you don’t understand, all of you have just been in a terrible accident, you need to go back to bed until we can get to the bottom of this.”
Alice responded, puzzled, “I get that we were in this crash, I even remember it… but look at me… I’m not a doctor but I feel better than I ever have…”
Dominic fixed the doctor with his own gaze, this one more questioning than puzzled. “Yeah doc, what crazy secret shit you got us on in here. How are we all perfectly fine after a crash that should have killed us?”
The man opened his mouth to respond, though nothing came out, words seemed to fail him, and he settled at last for exactly the explanation they didn’t want to hear.
“We don’t know... “
He looked exasperated, tired, and more puzzled than any of them. “Look, can we take this conversation out of the corridor? There is still a state of emergency.”
Once everyone had obeyed the harassed looking man’s request, he closed the door of the recently vacated and even more recently reoccupied men’s room. | © seadra of gs |
