Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “Well yeah… I didn’t mean here.”
Despite that, Alice’s mood showed no sign of dropping, especially when Claire said that she’d discovered a few new things about her power. It was difficult for Alice to imagine anyone not being amazed and excited by their powers, and the idea that pushing Claire about hers might upset her had simply not occurred to the blue haired electron that was currently bouncing about her apartment.
“Ugh no… you have no idea, he’s been making up the worst descriptions for powers, he wanted us to call him saran-man. Whatever you do don’t let him choose your name!”
She couldn’t resist asking about Claire’s experimentation though, “You have to tell us what you found out? What else can you do? Are you super strong?” She gasped as if at a sudden realisation, “Can you fly?”
She would have kept going, but was reminded of Mason’s dilemma. That at least cooled her passion a little. Mason’s life had changed. He’d told her he was fine just working from home but she knew it had been a bit awkward for him. “Yeah that’s right, and I can come help you out when I’m not at work too… if uh… if you want me too.”
She shrugged, attempting to conceal her enthusiasm, “I could bring over my PS2, we could play Mortal Kombat or something…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Nodding eagerly, Alice could already feel her mind kicking into gear, thinking of names, catch lines, costumes. She’d have to talk to Steven about that, he was much better with design than she would ever be. Her mind froze.
Steven. How would she explain this to him? Her world had turned upside down, and in truth, he was the only consistent part of it even before everything had changed. She couldn’t keep this a secret from him, not for long. He’d start asking questions, questions that she didn’t know how to answer. No. Alice would have to find a way to tell him, to explain what was happening to her.
Admittedly she wasn’t exactly sure what was happening to her, but she could at least try to explain something to her best friend. He knew about the crash, she’d even seen him yesterday, but hadn’t had any idea how to even begin to explain the fact that she’d died and been brought back to life. If she’d been religious she might have heralded it as a miracle. Maybe it was, but all she’d managed to tell him so far was that she’d survived the crash mostly unscathed. That she’d been lucky. It was the truth, but it wasn’t the whole truth. She’d have to deal with the consequences of that later.
The thought of continuing to experiment perked her up though, “Yeah!”
If she could store up things and release it, what else could she do? How could she use her power? What about Dom? He only had enough juice for one bolt, so did he have to pause to recharge?
“Do you have to like… take a break between throwing lightning to recharge? Or can you… I dunno, do both at the same time? So you could like, keep it up?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The bat plummeted down towards Alice’s unprotected skull. It was moving fast, so fast that it should have caused serious head injury, but when it hit, it simply stopped. It was as if Mason had moved it at a snail’s pace to simply rest it on top of her head. She felt the energy rush from the bat into her system, beginning to fill her body with its enthusiastic vibrations.
Claire looked just as amazed as Alice had hoped she would. After all, Alice should have been on the floor with a broken skull right about now, not standing proudly with her hands on her hips and an enormous grin.
“Isn’t it! I didn’t feel a thing, well, I did, but it doesn’t hurt at all.”
She dropped her head forwards so that Claire could see exactly how unaffected she was. The hair wasn’t even ruffled, not that it had been particularly neat in the first place. Blood and fragments of skull entirely failed to appear. “It’s like I absorb the energy from the bat, or a punch, or even falling down the stairs. I can even send it back!”
She looked around the kitchen, looking to see if there was anything she could do it to. It might be tricky though, she didn’t seem to have any sort of brake system. She had to instantly go a hundred miles an hour. Mason had hit her pretty hard, and if she put that energy into something else, it might put it through the wall or something.
Somehow she didn’t think Claire would be too happy if she started trashing her apartment.
“It’s not like Dom though. I have to like… fire all of it at once. I don’t know if I can limit it or anything.”
Alice leaned against the counter, her excitement undiminished “so did you find out exactly how yours works?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Nodding eagerly, Alice displayed that she was completely in favour of that suggestion. She’d grown up reading comic books, but she’d never wanted to be a super hero. Such amazing beings didn’t exist. Hadn’t existed. Clearly now they did. She was standing with two of them. She was one of them.
“I never thought anything like this would happen… I mean… who would… How could I not say yes? I can really help people now, I can go out and help them.”
She smiled, amused by Mason’s dedication to his nicknames, but Dominic was right, “Maybe we should spend a bit more time thinking about super hero names. I don’t think they’re something we should rush into. Anyway, I didn’t win Prom Queen, so it’d be kind of dishonest to call myself that.”
She stuck her tongue out playfully. She didn’t blame Mason, she was imagining dramatic scenes, rescuing people from burning buildings and stepping in to halt bank heists. What she wasn’t sure of was what those people would shout out as she appeared to save the day. That was putting something of a crimp in it.
“We could spend maybe the next few days thinking of ideas and throw them around when we meet up again?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “Awwwwww…”
Alice sounded disappointed, which she was, to be fair. After all it had been in this apartment that she first thought everyone was going to get a power but her. She’d been looking forward to showing Claire exactly what she could do. That and she was pretty sure she’d worked out what exactly it was she could. Or she at least had an idea.
She’d spent most of the last few days working in the diner, practising with her new power, and obsessively reading every comic book she could get her hands on. Mostly it had been dead ends, enjoyable dead ends, but not all that informative. Till she stumbled across a comic Steven had given her a couple of years ago for her birthday. It wasn’t a particularly rare one, but it was fairly old. ‘Uncanny X-Men #129’.
There was a character there, a villain who could take any amount of physical damage and convert it into strength and speed. It wasn’t an exact parallel, but it was close enough for her to read deeper. Sebastian Shaw absorbed kinetic energy, the energy of motion. Alice absorbed something when somebody tried to hit her. It made sense that it would be kinetic energy. She’d experimented with a hot pan at home, and sure enough her finger had been burned. Drop the same pan on her hand though, and nothing. It had to be kinetic energy.
She flung herself onto the couch, pulling a face, “I guess we can wait.”
She seemed every inch the sullen teenager, which was appropriate, as she was.
“At least you can live on more than just pancakes for the next couple of days then. Unless all you bought was maple syrup?”
She sprang up and bounced into the kitchen. Eager to be useful, she helped Claire unpack what was left of her shopping, putting it away at the older girl’s direction.
“Noooowww can we show you?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “No!”
Alice looked momentarily guilty, but then remembered what Mason had suggested. She quickly forgot about her guilt after that. She turned to Dom, “remind me to never ask him for name ideas.”
She shrugged after that, “You’re right though, I still have no idea how it works, I mean, it didn’t hurt you right?”
Dom shook his head and she grimaced, “maybe it is absorbing injuries? And like… how they would have happened? I mean… I did go flying down the stairs this morning, maybe I put that into the shelves?”
She had to admit, it sounded a little too weird, even for the impossibilities they were living through. She held out a hand to Dom, “Can I… y’know, see if I can send it back?”
With Dom’s clear agreement she stepped forward, hesitantly placing her hand on his arm. She closed her eyes, searching inside herself for whatever it was that she had taken and stored within her form. She found the power, the strange energy that had flown from his fist and into her. It took her a moment to find it, a moment that felt like a lifetime, and left her almost panicking that she might never find it at all.
Then, with that sudden fear in her mind, she found it. It seared along her arm with a jolt she was surprised wasn’t reflected physically. It was almost as if it had hijacked her nervous system. That energy, that bounce flung itself from the palm of her hand.
Dominic rocked back onto his heels. Then whistled appreciatively.
Alice was delighted, “This. Is. So. Cool.”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice rapped gently on the door, before pushing it open. Like the text had said, it wasn’t locked, and she let herself into Claire’s apartment.
“Hey, you in Claire?”
She stepped into the apartment, holding the door open so that Mason could follow her. He couldn’t exactly take public transport, so she’d had to loiter awkwardly in the door of buses as Mason got on. It had granted her more than one dirty look and even abusive language from other passengers and one bus driver.
They’d made it here in one piece though, with little more than bruised pride. It was strange to be back here, considering the last time they’d been in this apartment she’d been powerless and Mason had only just turned invisible. Now… well, Mason was still invisible, but Alice had a power of her own now.
She shrugged her bag off beside the door, then bounced further into the room. Not quite literally. She didn’t seem to have any charge left, not that she could tell anyway, she was still looking forward to demonstrating her new found abilities though. She’d just need to find a way to do so.
“Claire! Claire! I need to show you what I can do!”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Despite Mason’s reservations, Alice had already decided. This was happening. She struck a pose that she had probably picked up as a result of too much socialising with Dominic Weaver. Arms flung out, chest puffed forwards, she looked ready for anything as she proudly proclaimed “Hit me!”
She was ready for whatever they had to throw at her, riding too high on a wave of adrenaline and elation to worry about what might happen. In truth she might not feel whatever they did anyway, she was too excited about the possibilities. It took a moment for her to realise that Dominic wasn’t going to just go in with a gut punch. Both he and Mason were clearly uncomfortable with the idea of hitting her.
“Come on guys I’m 18, I’m not a kid anymore.”
She relented, instead turning side on, this way it would be easier for Dom to punch her in the arm. She concentrated, focusing on… something… Not getting hurt? That seemed like it was too vague. Maybe she had to specifically think about Dom not hurting her? Even so, that didn’t quite seem to fit, she hadn’t been thinking about individual stairs hurting her, it didn’t seem to have anything to do with the source. She was still ruminating when she heard Dominic take a step, then the whoosh of his fist. She flinched instinctively, expecting the impact to hurt, but instead felt something very different.
She had no idea how to describe it. It wasn’t how Dominic had described it, like a current, this felt… bouncier, like it had vibrations all of its own. She felt like she took on a little of those qualities herself, she felt more energetic, more cheerful. It wasn’t dissimilar to how she had felt after the Doctor had saved her life. Whatever was happening, it meant that Dominic’s attempt to hurt her had failed.
“Ummm… well it didn’t hurt, and I did feel something… but I don’t know what…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Well that was sudden pressure; Alice could feel their eyes on her, even Mason’s that she couldn’t see. She probably was the best equipped on the team to talk about super powers. It was perhaps a little worrying, and flattering at the same time. Here she was, a disappointing high school student stuck in a dead end diner job, with no qualifications or future to think of and two successful full grown men were looking to her for leadership.
“I think the only professional is going to be that doctor.”
OK, maybe not leadership, but suggestions at least. It was a pity she couldn’t really come up with an answer. Mason’s idea had sounded pretty good at first, but she’d come to the same conclusion as Dominic that it didn’t quite fit. It was almost like there’d been a shield around her when she’d fallen down those stairs, she remembered that impacts that should have hurt, really hurt, hadn’t felt like anything at all.
“Nope, pretty sure we don’t need an old priest and a young priest. Although they might understand what I can do.”
She laughed at Dom’s suggestion, as if he was about to throw a punch at her. Then she paused, “you know… That might be an idea…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice wasn’t the type to hold a grudge, she simply didn’t have it in her. Even if she did it wouldn’t have mattered. She could have forgiven anyone in the delirious rush of joy that had accompanied the manifestation of her power. That said, she wasn’t even entirely sure what her power was. She’d sent the shelves tumbling across the floor, but she hadn’t even flexed her arm, so super strength didn’t seem to be on the cards. Some sort of telekinesis? Although something told her that wasn’t it, she’d felt some sort of rush when it had happened.
”But what is it I can do?”
She wracked her brains, trying to work out what it could be. It didn’t feel like Dom described, or like the fuzzy feeling of Mason’s power. It had felt like she was letting something out, something more than just anger.
“I don’t think it’s anything like super strength, I don’t feel any stronger, or tougher. I fell down the stairs earlier today though and I hardly felt that at all. I mean like… all the way down the stairs. I’m not even scratched, it’s like I got another dose of whatever the doctor gave us…”
She shrugged, looking to Dominic and the empty air, “any ideas?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice yelped in surprise and delight as she felt arms encircle her waist and yank her off the ground. It could only be Mason, and her assumption was confirmed as he started chanting behind her. She laughed along with him until he set her down on the ground. She turned with a smile and threw her arms around his invisible form. It was a strange experience, to be hugging the air, so she shut her eyes. That made it seem far more natural. After all, he still felt normal, even if he didn’t quite look it.
She turned around, breathless from laughing, to Dom, nodding in agreement.
”You’re right, I definitely want something more awe inspiring than Prom Queen. It’s not exactly going to inspire fear in criminals is it?”
She resisted the urge to pat Mason’s shoulder, namely because she had now lost track of exactly where his shoulder was positioned. Her mind was racing even faster now than it had been when Claire had revealed her new power. She’d thought she was stuck outside the rest of the group, but now she wasn’t, she was part of it, and they really could make a superhero team.
It was like she’d stepped into one of her comic books, she couldn’t really imagine anything more amazing happening to her right now.
”I can’t believe it.”
She looked back at Dom, then around to where she thought Mason might be.
”Maybe we really can be superheroes…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Dom winced.
There was a moment of awful silence. It was only a second, but it seemed to stretch for a lifetime.
Alice whirled around, one hand still gripping the shelving unit. Her fingers had gone white under the pressure. Her eyes were wide, and for the first time since Dominic and Mason had met her she looked… angry. Her voice was raised, and the fury was carried in her tone.
“I’M SICK OF BEING ON THE SIDE-LINES”
She would have gone further, but was interrupted when the shelving unit tore itself from her grasp, soared across the room like a leaping bronco, and proceeded to explode against the brick wall of the warehouse.
Alice stared at her hand in horror, then with gradually mounting amazement and wonder. She had done that. She’d blasted the shelves across the room, something that was testified to by the sorry pile of crushed and twisted metal on the floor by the wall. She was still staring at her hand, turning it over to examine the back. It still seemed like her hand, no different to how it had been this morning…
..this morning.
She’d fallen down the stairs, a long way, and she hadn’t even been bruised. She should have been bruised. Alice realised that she had been staring at her hand for several seconds, and looked up to the other two. She suddenly looked awkward, and guilty.
“Mason… I guess I owe you an apology. Sorry I… got mad…”
She began to grin, her good spirits returning as she realised what this meant. She was almost bouncing with joy and excitement by the time she managed to get actual words out, although calling them that may be too generous.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | In agreement with Dominic, Alice shook her head towards where Mason should be. There was a smile on her face as she did so though. “I know there are some obscure super heroes in the comics, but Saran man is not one of them. Maybe you should go back to the drawing board on that one.”
At Dominic’s question her mood dropped. The day had been so rushed, right from the start, that its fortunate beginning had since flown her mind. Nothing unusual happened to Alice, she got up, went to work, and then came here. If it weren’t for the fact that Dominic was throwing lightning and Mason was invisible to the naked eye it would have been just her average day.
She shrugged awkwardly, “nothing unusual… was just… I guess a normal day…”
She moved away a little, playing her fingers along one of the collapsing shelving units. She suddenly seemed very interested in the dilapidated building about them, and she hoped that Dominic would stop asking about it. She had been the most excited by the idea that they might have super powers, and she supposed all that had meant was that she was the only one who wouldn’t get any. No matter how unintentional it was, she still felt as though she’d been cast out of the group.
She’d never been actively unpopular in school. She was weird sure, and had her run in with bullies as most slightly weird kids do, but she wasn’t exactly unpopular. She’d even had a date to the prom. Yet she’d never quite fit in with everyone else. This was just confirmation of that. She forced a weak smile back onto her face, doing her best to seem excited for the others.
“I guess I was just unlucky…” She glanced to the space she thought contained Mason, ”… or lucky…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The thought of Mason in a tight cheerleading costume, skirt, pom-poms and all was momentarily so funny that Alice laughed out loud.
“You’re damn right. They’d have to match my hair as well.”
She struck a pose, one hand on her hip, the other in the air, legs wide and expression deadly serious. Deadly serious for all of three seconds, then she started laughing again.
“I’d need a name to shout though, something I can spell out for the crowd. You don’t hear people cheering for the moderately heroic person that saved the world. You’ve gotta have a proper hero name.”
Alice was half tempted to reach out and test the coin at Dominic’s suggestion, then watched in delight as it flipped through the air before pausing, levitated once more. It was hard, because she didn’t know what it was like to have these abilities, but she was still in awe to see the comic books she loved come to life.
She shook her head, disappointed on Mason’s behalf when his attempt apparently failed.
“Sorry Mason. Keep trying though, maybe you’re just doing it wrong.”
Admittedly, Dominic had phrased it somewhat more positively, and she winced internally at her unintended criticism.
“What he said…”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice realised after Dominic’s display that her mouth was open. She slowly closed it. It had been awe inspiring, and Alice realised that up until this moment, she hadn’t quite believed what was happening. How could it have been real? Metal was bending against Claire’s skin and Dominic had turned into a human battery. How could it possibly be real, it was more likely that she hadn’t recovered from the crash and was still in a coma in the hospital.
“THAT WAS SO COOL!”
Alice was positively vibrating with excitement. As though she had a direct line to Dominic’s charge as well. It helped that her hair was beginning to stand on end from the static charge in the air. The collapsed cardboard boxes on the shelf had caught fire, faint flickering flames contrasting with the dirty yellow sunlight creeping in through the grimey windows.
She smiled awkwardly in the direction from which Mason’s voice had originated. “Thanks, but I guess I’ll just have to be the cheerleader, I never got to be one in school, now’s my chance.”
She sounded disappointed, but perked up a little when Mason asked what he should do. She pondered the problem. Mason had turned totally invisible, but he could pick things up without them being invisible. He would probably have already been trying to turn it off, obviously with no luck, but Alice wondered if perhaps he could make something else invisible, or even someone else…
“How about…”
She paused, trying to work out where Mason was stood in order to reorient herself. After a half second she realised it was pointless, and just spoke in the direction his voice had come from.
“Maybe you could try turning something else invisible? Maybe it doesn’t have to be just you? Like Sue Storm could turn other people invisible, maybe you can do that too?”
