Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | This was just getting more and more confusing.
"I mean, genes and bloodline makes sense… but I didn't inherit this stuff…"
She was trying to explain, but there didn't seem to be any easy way to do it.
"None of us did. It wasn't just me, there were six of us. What are the odds of six of us being in the same accident? Being saved from certain death? And then all of us getting powers?"
She stopped suddenly, realising that she might have said too much. They'd been trying to keep this quiet after all, although it was clear from the conversation that this girl, this… 'Punk' had powers of her own, and knew a lot more than any of them.
"They'll find me? Who are they? The Men in Black?"
Except, Will had talked about the two men that had come to talk to him. Those men had known a lot more about what was going on than any of the survivors. Maybe she should finally ask him about them, she didn't like thinking that everyone else knew what was going on, while she didn’t.
She jumped up to sit on top of a dumpster pulled up against the wall, swinging her legs as she looked awkwardly at the floor.
"I've had my powers for weeks now, and no one has come to see me. They just found Will. He didn't tell them about the rest of us…"
It was becoming more and more obvious that this girl knew a lot more about what was going on. Even better, she didn't seem to be part of whatever 'establishment' operated within the world of people with powers. Alice had been through establishment, and right now she wasn't in the best mood with it.
"My friend suggested it… It's sort of a history thing… I guess…"
She looked up at the older girl.
"Look, you're the only person I know who might have an answer… What the hell is going on?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Hey!"
Alice glared at the point she thought Mason was sat in, then she turned back to Persephone.
"I wouldn't be pretending. ALL this stuff is so cool!"
Alice was not a good liar, though in this case it hardly even mattered. She was entirely sincere. Perhaps it was an advantage then that she couldn't lie. It was clear that she meant what she said. Maybe her power meant more to her than Mason's invisibility or Persephone's strange horticultural facilities, but everything they could now do was amazing.
"It's always the one that people underestimate that save the day. Everyone thinks that Superman would easily beat Batman, but look at Dawn of Justice…" Her face darkened, "Stupid movie…"
She looked back up from her contemplation, "No, surely there wouldn't be aliens as well..?"
Terrifying though that event would be, there was an undeniably hopeful tone in her voice. Maybe expecting the Martian Manhunter or Groot was a bit much however. Not that it was impossible. If people with super powers could hide in human society for centuries, then surely aliens would have it much easier out in the vastness of space.
She became more excited at Persephone's offer though, her mind racing with all the possibilities. Admittedly, plant themed super humans tended to get a bad rep. The only one most people could think of was Poison Ivy, and her soul was far from lily white, though she could probably grow really, really white lilies.
"I'll definitely think of something. There's got to be soooo many possibilities for you! Do you want to come to the warehouse then? We could go now? If you don't want to stay?"
She awkwardly extracted a few bills from Mason's wallet, grateful that he had begun by offering to pay for the fries. It was a luxury she could ill afford right now, even if she still felt a little like she was taking advantage by eating his fries and then letting him pay.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice nodded enthusiastically in response to Mason's comment, "He's right, I haven't felt this good since… uh… ever. She didn't just give us powers, it's like she hit the reset button on our bodies too."
She looked back at Claire, "I mean, I don't see why not. You can't do any of your insulin stuff can you? But you've not collapsed or anything. Maybe it really has taken it away. I mean she brought me back from the dead. Curing diabetes seems kinda easy by comparison."
She realised, finally, that she might have pushed a little too hard regarding this training idea. Claire seemed annoyed, and she really didn't want to upset her, or anyone, or risk any of them being mad at her.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to pressure you or anything. I just got really excited cause I've got powers now, and you've got powers and I thought it might be fun for us to do something together."
She pulled the sleeves of her hoodie awkwardly down over her hands and looked around the apartment, wishing that she could drop through the ground right now instead of blowing stuff up. Surely that would have been a more useful ability.
"I didn't mean it like… I just… thought it would be nice…"
She perked up a little as Claire's smile caught her eye.
"Yeah that's be cool! I'd love to see some of your art!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Ah!"
Alice glanced in the direction of the invisible Mason, "We already said no more of that."
She turned back to Persephone, suddenly looking intensely serious as she leaned towards her.
"Whatever you do, don't let him pick a name for you OK…"
Alice looked sort of awkward as she realised that her explanation hadn't really been much help to the older girl. She had gotten a little caught up in the excitement of the whole thing, but at the same time she didn't want to give away what was going on to anyone who might be listening.
"Sorry, I guess I'm not as good at this whole secret keeping thing. I suppose I'll have to get better at it…"
She shrugged, too excited about the whole thing to really remain disappointed in her handling of it. This was something totally new, something world-shaking, and she got to be a part of it.
"It is pretty cool though right? I mean, we all got our powers in the same way and now we all get to use them to help people."
She leaned back against the bench. "Maybe we'll have to come up with like a team name as well. That could be fun. Teams always have a proper name in the comics…"
Alice paused, "Not that this is like comic books or anything… I mean… aww it so is… it's so COOL!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The girl, 'punk' she'd called herself, didn't seem to know what Alice was talking about. Which was understandable. She'd been intentionally vague, thinking that anyone who had been saved by the doctor would know what she was talking about. And yet, this girl seemed quite comfortable with the thought of powers…
Then the story seemed to change, as if 'Punk' had realised what Alice was talking about. Maybe she had been too vague about it then. Maybe 'Punk' actually knew the Doctor by name, that might explain the confusion.
Speaking of confusion, the girl's response simply left Alice even more so.
"What do you mean family history?"
What little of her face was visible looked seriously perplexed. Was this what Will had been talking about?
"I only got these a couple of days ago. I didn't get them from my mom or dad. At least… I don't think so…"
There really was no way for her to know. This was getting more confusing than exciting, and this girl was not helping.
"What do you mean rules? Whose rules? These are my powers. No one else's!"
It was like this girl didn't believe her, and Alice couldn't understand why not. Surely if she had powers too then she would understand what Alice was going through right now. At least in part.
"Look, I was normal until that crash. And then the doctor saved me. She saved me… I died and she brought me back and gave me powers. That's what happened. This isn't from… from whatever shitty family I might have had OK."
She'd clenched her fists without realising, though she didn't intend any violence. She just couldn't understand why she was being lied to. This girl didn't know her, why would she say that the doctor had nothing to do with it? It didn't make any sense.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Alice…"
But Alice was already at the door of Stephen's room, swinging her bag onto her shoulder as she went.
"Alice please!"
He sounded desperate, not wanting them to part on such terms. Alice paused in the door and turned back to face him, pawing roughly at her eyes.
"What?"
Stephen climbed off the bed, standing in front of her.
"I mean… it's hard to believe OK Alice. Super powers? In the real world? It's like being in a comic book."
Alice took a step closer to the door of his room, and he followed her.
"I know but… I would have thought that being my best friend you'd believe me when I told you…"
He nodded, "I do. I do."
She shook her head, "No you don't! I can tell, you don't believe me even after everything. I don't even know why I'm bothering having this argument."
He held up his hands in surrender.
"OK Alice, maybe I don't totally believe you yet. But it's not because I don't trust you. Not at all. It's just such an amazing, impossible thing. If I told you I had powers wouldn't you be just a tiny bit sceptical?"
He paused in thought for a moment, "OK maybe you wouldn't, it's just a little hard to really believe without seeing it."
She stood in the doorway for a moment longer, glaring sullenly at him, then she dropped her bag on the floor and held up a hand, palm towards Stephen.
"You want to believe me? Hit me."
"Alice…"
"Just do it, or I'm going."
He sighed, awkwardly raising a fist.
"Fine…"
Stephen threw a punch...

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | It took Alice a moment to recognise it, but after a while she realised that fries were mysteriously disappearing from the stack placed in front of them. She helped herself as well, a little more comfortable, she assumed, in taking the fries than Mason was. After all, she didn't need to take the risk of convincing the other occupants of the diner that there was a gently burping, fry eating ghost in their midst.
She giggled at the mental image.
It did make her feel a little fat though, as she watched the plate of fries diminish far quicker than it really should do. She had to keep constantly reminding herself that it was because of the presence of her invisible friend.
"Hey! I never said you weren't stealthy. Anyway, you're invisible now, I bet it's your speciality."
They remained eating the greasy, slightly stale fries for a little longer. Just as they were reaching the plate itself Persephone appeared once more in front of them, this time without her apron. She looked a little more like she actually recognised them now as well.
Alice wasn't exactly sure how to start, but she pulled the earphones out of her ears.
"Umm… so Dom had this sweet idea of meeting up so that we could test our powers, but then only me and Mason said we'd go so we went along and then it turned out that I had a power as well cause I'd fallen down the stairs that morning and then it turned out that I can do other stuff and anyway it was really cool…"
Alice paused for breath.
"And Dom was saying that we could actually be like heroes and use our powers to do good and that we should start a hero team. Like the Avengers or the Justice League. Anyway I thought it was a really good idea so I thought we should ask you if you wanted to join us too, cause like we all got our powers at the same time you know…"
She looked expectantly at Persephone.
"Oh yeah and Claire already said yes."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The two stared at each other for a moment, Alice growing increasingly uncomfortable. Despite this being what she'd dreamed of since they'd worked out that they had abilities, it was much scarier now that she was actually out here and doing it. She was pretty sure the only thing that had kept her in one piece was the mostly instinctive nature of her power and the adrenaline that even now was coursing through her system.
She felt like she was high, or at least how she imagined high might be. Weed might now be legal in San Francisco, but Alice had never done any drugs. She'd never really been that interested, but her morals had kept her from doing so even under peer pressure.
She couldn't help but smile a little behind her mask though as the older girl seemed to approve. It didn't help that her response to Alice's question was vague. Not that Alice could blame her, the question had been vague, it was unlikely that the other girl had not noticed Alice hurl a grown man across the alley.
And then it made sense, "another..."
Another person with powers, clearly this girl had powers as well, it explained how she had so easily dealt with the thugs, and avoided the flying man. Alice's eyes widened a little when her suspicions were confirmed.
"This is so awesome! Did… did the Doctor save you too?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice couldn't see the accusatory finger, but she was certainly imagining it as his accusation hissed out of the air. Then she realised that he was joking and rolled her eyes. Fortunately, to any casual observer it would look like an instinctive reaction to the person at the other end of the phone. She resisted the urge to hold up her hands in surrender.
"Don't worry, I won't be drowning anything in the red sea. You can trust me."
To Alice that was as great a sacrilege as well done steak, it simply shouldn't be done. Anyone who did should be tossed into the pan alongside it as far as she was concerned. Alice was grateful that Mason stepped in, she had been trying to explain what had been going on without giving anything away to eavesdroppers, Mason's approach had been much simpler.
She smiled as Persephone took down their order and turned to go.
"Thanks!"
She turned back to look towards the seat opposite, still talking as though to someone on the other end of a phone.
"Do you think that she'll want to get involved? I mean, we all got our powers the same way, it would make sense. I hope she does, it wouldn't be the same otherwise…"
There was clearly some doubt in her voice, Alice didn't handle rejection well, and now that she was finally part of something special, she was desperately worried that it would all fall apart at the last minute.
She glanced up again at Persephone's return, smiling.
"That's uh… everything I think…"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Mason's stomach was absurdly loud, and Alice was glad there was no one in the booths next to them, luckily enough. She would have struggled to play that off as her own stomach. If Mason had suggested something larger than fries and insisted on paying, then she probably would have argued. There was something about a plate of fries that transcended charity and pride. Besides, if someone ordered fries it was expected that they would be sharing them with everyone else.
"I don't mind, it's quite nice to have a bit of company to be honest. And fries sound good, I'm not that hungry but I might just steal a few."
She looked up as she realised Persephone had returned, the older girl playing the part of a waitress once more.
"Uh… just a fries for… me… a large one."
When Persephone grew conspiratorial Alice couldn't help feel a little more excited. Persephone had dropped a little bit of the curtain in her curiousity.
"I mean, you could say that, but we've sort of been… uh… testing things out…"
It was becoming increasingly obvious that Alice was not entirely at home in the realm of subterfuge.
"And well… we thought that maybe… you could sort of… join in..?"
She left the question hanging, not entirely sure where to go from here. She certainly hadn't planned how this encounter would go, or what she would say.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice couldn't help but giggle at Mason's 'plant lady' comment. Doing so attracted a strange look from the couple she was passing, but she waited until they sat down, away from the other customers. It made things easier, both for Mason and for her. He didn't have to worry about his voice emerging from thin air and terrifying people, and she had to worry slightly less about people thinking she was mad. Of course they could still see her, but at least they wouldn't be able to hear what she was saying to thin air.
"Wait, I've got an idea."
She scrabbled inside her bag for her earphones, then plugging them into her phone, put one in her ear. Nothing was playing, but hopefully anyone that looked over would just think she was talking on the phone instead of to herself.
"Maybe people won't think I should be committed now. We should just be able to talk normally now. I mean… as long as you don't get too loud. We'll just have to keep an eye out for anyone walking past."
They sat, and she glanced up at the wall, she was actually a little hungry, but had to consider rent and bills. She glanced at where she thought Mason's face was.
"You want anything? I'm not really that hungry to be honest. If we order something and just put it in front of me you can just sneak stuff when people aren't looking, make sure you can eat something at least."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice looked about, and promptly chose a booth by the window. The stools at the bar would have made it too easy for someone to bump into or accidentally sit on Mason. She might look a bit like an asshole, but at least it would mean Mason could relax a little.
"Uh, coffee… yeah… can I get some half and half as well though…"
Persephone was really business like, and Alice had been caught off guard by how brusque she had been. She'd responded as she would have automatically. She caught herself before she actually sat down, turning to Persephone with a smile, but taking the hint, just, and avoiding a hug.
"You doing OK?"
Then it clicked, Persephone was at work, maybe her boss was one of the cooks behind the counter or something.
"I uh… I guess we'll wait till you finish your shift, got some stuff we wanted to talk about."
She did her best to signal that Mason was present, pulling the kind of face that might have led to someone inquiring about her health if they could see it.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice left the bus rather awkwardly, not wanting to lose Mason in the crush. Not that it was that busy out here. The diner was… interesting. Mainly because of its ability to be one of the most soulless looking places she had ever seen. The diner she worked in was small, and cheap, but it was old fashioned, the kind of place you might see in an 80s movie. It had its own personality. It probably wouldn't rate on any list of places to eat in San Francisco, but it was a nice enough place to grab your breakfast, no matter what time your breakfast might be.
The diner Persephone worked at seemed to lack that personality, no matter how positively Alice tried to look at it. It wasn't that it looked like a bad place to work; just that it lacked any features to recommend it whatsoever. She glanced around instinctively at Mason's outburst, then looked towards the windows of the diner, seeing their friend appear at a table there.
Almost on command she waved excitedly. Then lead the way along the sidewalk. They crossed the road and only a moment later were pushing through the slightly grimy glass door that served as an entrance. It was slightly easier to catch Persephone's eye in here than it had been outside.
She whispered to Mason, "I guess we should get a table and some food. I'm kinda hungry. Then we can talk properly when she finishes work."
She grinned broadly as Persephone approached, resisting the urge to wave again, "Hey!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | With Claire's assurances still fresh in her mind, Alice had decided that it was time to add another member to their impromptu Justice League. It was all Dom's idea, Mason was with her now, and Claire was accounted for. That left only Will and Persephone. Will still seemed to have no powers, whereas Persephone definitely did. They might be a little odd, but who knew what else she could do? After all, Poison Ivy was one of Batman's biggest villains and her power was basically the same right?
She was vaguely aware that it wasn't quite a fair comparison, but was also without the information to make any other sort of judgement, so Poison Ivy it was for now. She'd texted Persephone , asking for her address, but received no response. It was fair enough, Alice had gotten to know the others fairly well over the few days of imprisonment in the hospital, so her immediate assumption was that Persephone was at work. The other girl worked a lot, she had two waitressing jobs, one in a diner, and one in a restaurant.
She felt a little like Benedict Cumberbatch as she sleuthed her way to the conclusion that in the middle of the day, Persephone would be working at the diner. Grateful for her prepaid bus pass, she collected Mason from Will's apartment, not seeing the enigmatic detective when she popped in.
They were sat at the back of a mostly empty bus, Alice apparently selfishly taking up two seats. She turned her head towards the window, feeling a little like a spy as she whispered to her invisible friend.
"So she hasn't texted me back, but I think she's probably working at the diner right now, so we can go and check there?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "I'm not Luchadore… I'm… I'm…"
It was much harder to say it now than it had been in front of her mirror.
"I'm Paladin!"
She wished her voice hadn't sounded quite as high as it did. She'd panicked a little. She hadn't quite expected it to be like this. Somehow she'd imagined that she'd have been a little more prepared, not in the Batman vest that she wore in bed. Somehow she'd imagined doing it in a costume, or at least looking a little more put together.
She looked at her hands concernedly. She hadn't thought of finger prints. She'd simply thought that covering her face would be enough. This girl seemed to know a lot more about it, which was weird. Last she'd checked, there were no heroes in San Francisco. Although she supposed that was as a result of the lack of super powers up to this point.
Wait…
"Hang on, you mean…"
The small visible amount of her face looked astonished. This girl seemed decidedly underwhelmed considering that she had just witnessed a five foot four girl hurl a fully grown man across an alley with a simple touch of her hand. It was definitely not what she had expected. She pulled her face down a little into her hoodie and bandana.
Maybe…
"Are you… do you… you know?"
She wasn't exactly sure how to address this issue, after all, how often did you meet someone else who knew about super powers being real?
"Have… you… got… ummm…"
