Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Oh yeah, we get some pretty interesting jobs sometimes." Alice taps her nose. Though it seems to happen less and less, occasionally Heroes are called upon to do more covert operations. Usually this is only the case when law enforcement has no other choice, or if deploying a Hero could limit or eliminate what would otherwise be unacceptable casualties. Storming a heavily armed and fortified gang base, for example. Paladin herself had been called upon for such operations from time to time, but hadn't been asked to engage in anything for a while. She hasn't wondered about that much, but she does for a moment now.
Snapping back out of it, she takes another bite of her burger, having managed to reduce the impressively sized monstrosity to only a mere mouthful over the course of their conversation. If you didn't know she was a Hero you might have wondered how she managed to process so much food in her slim frame.
Shrugging, Alice considers the question again. "Like I said, I've had some unusual ones, I actually had to run all the way down to LA once to support another Hero, apparently there was no one else available and they needed a heavy hitter. That was a bit weird." She raised a hand and ticked off a finger. "I also ended up doing some stuff for the FBI-Hero joint taskforce. Though I'm not allowed to talk about the details, I can just say that I was involved. It's not like they can cover it up after Paladin has been involved after all."
There is a rather more interesting secret in Alice's past. It's not exactly common knowledge, though it is much conspiracy theorised that she had her powers before the Event. There are in fact several grainy videos in a thousand different places on the internet that show someone with blue hair leaping up to the fifth floor of a building in much the same manner that Paladin does now. She was there when the strange machines the Doctor had built hummed to life, though she hadn't tried to stop it. She wonder's now whether she should have done… "I'm just not really that interesting outside of work though, although I will definitely kick your ass at mortal combat, and I'm like a pro at DnD."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Yeah..."
Alice grimaces thoughtfully around another mouthful of burger. On the whole Paladin's interactions with the police are positive, they are mostly friendly to her, though she is in fact oblivious to how much of that is as a result of fear, rather than respect and admiration. Very few people will disrespect a metahuman as powerful as Paladin to her face, no matter how moral and upstanding she has shown herself to be.
"I know sometimes the police can be a little less than friendly to metas."
Her tone only betrays how truly ignorant of this she is. As Paladin, Alice is looked up to and respected by nearly everyone, she even has a good reputation in New York City, a place famous for it's anti-meta sentiment. She might be insulated from it personally, but she is at least aware that it happens, and her sympathy is genuine as she continues, "I'm sorry it happened that way, but at least, silver lining, it meant that we got to meat and you got to try this amazing food!"
She nods, "And San Francisco is much more open to people like you and me, they can't get enough of Heroes here!"
The regularity of new Heroes in San Francisco could not have escaped anyone's notice, and it is intentional, the Program regularly launches new Heroes here as a test. Though many choose to move on, either to new cities or those they originally came from, many choose to stay in the bay area. San Francisco is fast becoming known as the City of Heroes, and not just because it is the home of Paladin.
"I'm glad you're enjoying it in San Francisco though! It's such a great city, although I have lived here my entire life, I've hardly even left the state!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | ”Wow… I’ve never managed to hold down a secondary job, I tried for a while, but nothing ever seemed to stick, and the moment there was an emergency I was running out the door.”
Alice pauses as the food arrives, her burger was clearly named after it was created. An enormous brioche bun overflows with moist ground beef, melted cheese, three rashers of bacon and an onion ring that looked like it might have just been made out of an entire onion. It’s certainly earned it’s title and Alice wouldn’t have been totally surprised if a monster with a similar appearance attacked the city.
It’s an intimidating meal, but Alice digs into it with gusto, beating the crap out of villains builds an appetite, as do the training sessions she engages in outside of work. The food is good, really good, clearly and she has to pause to wipe some of the meat juices from her chin. She groans in appreciation. ”So f*&king good.”
She indicates the plate in front of Megan. ”Seriously, try the food, being able to justify eating somewhere like this is almost a good enough justification to be a Hero by itself.”
She pauses for a moment to pick at the fries, thick cut slabs of potato fried and lightly salted. ”Have you been in anything I might have seen? Or played?” That’s unlikely, she actually still owns the same PS2 that had been donated to her by her best friend Stephen. In the past she might have been eager to buy a new games console once she’d saved enough money to, now she hardly uses the black rectangle that is currently gathering dust in her TV unit. Her Netflix account still got a lot of use though, sometimes it was good to just switch her brain off.
”Did you just move here for the Program?”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice shrugs. "Who needs a life when you have a job as exciting as ours?"
She sips the water, then giggles a little. It's surprisingly girlish for someone that possesses enough power to level this restaurant with one fist. "Goddamn, we sound like we're middle aged." She puts on a grumpy grandpa voice. "When I was your age we didn't have lives, I worked 27 hours a day 8 days a week."
Shaking her fist in her best approximation of an old man, Alice screws up her face and scowls at Megan. It's not very convincing, but it is a reminder of just how young the girl behind Paladin is. She snorts, then picks up her glass for another sip of the ice cold water. Her face grows more serious once she puts the glass down.
"I used to be better about keeping stuff separate, had a life, things I did outside of work, a boyfriend, everything. Just... Over time that stuff sort of drifts away. Nobody else quite gets what it's like to be a Hero. I don't blame them, I don't think I had any idea what I was getting into when it all started." She looks momentarily introspective, clearly thinking about other things. There is a visible change in her demeanour as she pulls herself back to reality.
"Sorry... That was a bit weird wasn't it? I don't really talk about this stuff much. Not enough Hero friends, and you can't really share it with people unless you really trust them."
She wonders for a moment if Sunny ever thinks about this. Probably not. Sometimes she envies the blonde, and not just because she got the power that Alice had always wanted. She makes a not too subtle attempt to change the subject. "What's your side work then?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice takes a moment to take a sip of the large glass of iced water that has been placed in front of her, clearly taking a moment to think, "To be honest I guess it's a stretch calling it a life." Alice pulls more shifts than any other Hero in San Francisco, not that she knows it, and when she's not on patrol or fighting villains, she seems to spend her time training. Since she and Nate broke up she hasn't dated anyone, hasn't even opened up any of the dating apps she had rather hopefully downloaded onto her phone when she'd finally convinced herself that she'd gotten over him, not that it was the case either way.
"I mean... Now that I think about it I suppose my life is the Program really." She looks thoughtful for a moment, before smiling. "But that's OK. I didn't really have much before the Event either, at least now I get to do something that actually helps people." It's sincere, If Alice is anything, it's a bad liar, and really, it's a miracle she's managed to keep her identity secret this long. The popularity of Paladin has probably helped, blue hair has become ubiquitous, especially in San Francisco, and barely draws even a glance these days.
"It's always hard to establish something outside of this work, you could be called on for something at any time, and... I mean it really is a job that nobody else will ever really 'get'... At least no one I've met."
She falls silent again, her face introspective, before she snaps back to reality and looks brightly at Megan. "But I am a bad example of how to balance work and life, I'm sure you've managed much better than I have. How has it been moving to San Francisco?" | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice shrugged, "Not much that's particularly interesting. I was a line cook here for a couple of months before the Program launched. I didn't have a permanent address, so it was difficult to get a job in a lot of places, and most of the ones that didn't ask questions were not really places I wanted to work. He hired me, accepted my weird schedule, and let me take leftovers home from the kitchen. There aren't a lot of bosses around that are as understanding as Bob. I was pretty lucky to have found him really. Not sure I would have made it to launch day if I hadn't stumbled across him. I kind of try and repay him now by bringing every new Hero here at some point. So far they've all become repeat customers." There's a definite note of pride in her voice at that, even if she's no longer at the grill herself.
The food is mostly a simple affair, chosen for it's filling qualities and spiced up with fine ingredients and creative twists. Alice reaches over to tap an item on the menu in front of Megan. "The ribs are really good, I can definitely recommend them."
A server appears, young, probably around Megan and Alice's age, to take their orders. Alice just orders water, with ice, as well as a burger called 'The Monstrosity' in the menu with a double-helping of fries. Alice had learned a long time ago that Hero work led to a large appetite, and she probably packed away fifteen-hundred more calories than she used to. 'Hungry Bob's' was certainly an appropriate place for her to eat lunch regularly. It helped that she was significantly bigger now than she had been as a skinny teenager, regular training, workouts and the sort of fighting that Hero work entailed had bulked up her musculature considerably.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Good. Because neither do I." Alice winks and taps her nose. It's one of the few points where her normally strait-laced attitude flexes. Usually because she can go and have fun with people on a night out. Stephen, her old friend from school, introduced her to it while he was at College, she'd sort of gotten the taste for it. Stephen had attributed it to her work hard, play harder lifestyle, but Alice just thinks it's fun.
She pauses in the centre of a cross roads, long corridors leading off to either side, and a shorter one terminating in a door directly ahead. "If you have a seriously Hero sized appetite there's only one place to go."
Alice jerks her thumb to the right, then, without waiting for a response, starts down that corridor, towing Megan behind her. It's a long corridor, easily covering several blocks. The plain concrete walls look relatively fresh, and the lights above are a harsh, unblinking white. After a little over five minutes of walking, they turn a corner to be confronted by a door. There's a sign on this side of the door. Originally it had read the address of the underground parking lot they are about to emerge into, but a sharpie has been used to cross that out. Underneath has simply been scrawled the word Lunch. It is in the same hand as the graffiti in the Hero break room.
The parking garage in question is nearly full, mostly expensive cars crowding the low-ceilinged concrete and asphalt space. There is nobody in it. The structure echoes strangely as Alice walks through it, but it doesn't take long for the two to emerge into the bright sunlight of a late San Francisco afternoon, albeit one in which the bitterly cold wind makes even Alice wrap her jacket more tightly about herself for warmth. "Come on."
She doesn't take Megan's hand this time, instead keeping her hands buried in warm pockets as she trots across the street with a crowd of commuters. Her intended destination is just around the corner, a narrow, but long restaurant with a large sign outside it that proudly declares it's owner to be Bob, and the fact that he is hungry.
"OK," Alice keeps her voice low as she pushes open the door. "Basically all of the Heroes in the city come here, I used to think Bob was a Hero, but the guy basically lives here, so I guess not."
The inside of the restaurant is giving it's best impression of a log cabin, with wood panelled walls and a roaring fire halfway along one wall. The clientele, for there are many, are tucking into plates piled high with food, all of it calorific, and judging by the delighted reactions, all of it delicious. "Bob's a good guy, he gave me a few months work here a couple of years ago, back before the Program took off. I really needed the helping hand then, so I try to drop in when I can."
Alice had been homeless for several months, unable to hold down a proper job for long due to her vigilantism and tossed out of her then apartment for missing rent. She'd slept in the warehouse Dom had leased for the six of them back when they'd all gotten powers, Bob had given her a job that had at least fed her for a few months, before she'd become the most famous person in America.
Bob, surprisingly, is not a large man, he stands about an inch taller than Alice, with a wiry form that could have been mistaken for anorexic in a bad light. "Alice! My little bruiser!" The small man throws his arms around the girl, and the origin of the affectionate title becomes obvious. Bob might be taller than Alice, but it is clear even from her slender build that she outweighs him in sheer muscle alone. Alice pulls away and punches the man affectionately on the arm. "Gerroff. Bob, this is my friend Megan, she's new in town so..."
Bob interrupts, "So she's never tried my food?" He draws a critical eye over Megan's form. "Yes, I can tell, far too skinny." It's a somewhat ironic comment coming from a man who looks like a toast-rack on legs. "Don't worry, I'll make sure we feed her up."
The two are shown to a table and provided with menus. Bob lingers a moment longer, "Make sure you split the bill, or this one will eat you out of house and home." He prods Alice meaningfully, before heading back towards the front of the restaurant to greet a family that have just entered. | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The flat response hits like a physical blow. Alice considers Claire a friend, had pretty much since they had first met in that hospital room after the accident. Sure the older woman had always been quiet and reserved, but never unpleasant. They'd lost touch over the last few years, Alice had been busy with the Program, as had Claire, but Alice still thinks of them as friends. At least she did.
The hurt clear on her face, Alice sits back, staring at her knees. Her youth is, for a moment, more apparent than ever. It's true that the last time they had properly talked had been before... Before Mason had died... Is that what this is about? Claire had been closer to the invisible man than any of them. Is she still grieving for him?
Alice had grieved too. She'd been there, seen Mason take a bullet for her, a bullet she'd learned, just seconds later, couldn't have hurt her. That had been hard, trying to accept that his sacrifice hadn't been pointless. Really, she hasn't accepted it even now. It's a recurring nightmare.
It takes Alice a moment to realise that she has been asked a question. She looks up, catching Claire in the corner of her vision. She looks away, in the direction the question has come from. "No Director, there won't be any problem."
Alice isn't sure what is going on with Claire, but she's been asked to support this mission because her doing so will save lives. With only a brief glance in Claire's direction, she turns her attention back to the portfolio in front of her, flicking through it in a display of sudden interest. "Just an old friend, sorry."
There's a tinge of regret to Alice's words, though she doesn't know why. It seems Claire is angry with her for some reason, because they haven't talked perhaps?
The Director harrumph's, refolding her arms. There is a pause as she deliberates on the nature of this problem. Eventually she comes to some unknown conclusion, immediately made known. "Very well, we will continue the briefing. Agent Elliot being a surveillance asset, it should have little effect on the mission itself."
Tightening her jaw, Alice nods and turns to look at the professionally dressed woman across the conference table. She does her best to keep her voice flat and professional, failing miserably at it. "Sorry for interrupting."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice gives the bag a double take. There's definitely something about it which seems familiar, but she can't quite work out what it was. She files it away to ask about later, leaving it at "That's a really cute bag!"
Once more grabbing Megan's hand, she pulls her into the stair well. Leaning over the side, she checks to see that there is no-one below. The stairwell is empty, as it usually is. The office staff of the Program rarely bother using the secret exits, indeed, most of them do not even know it exists. Even San Francisco, with it's larger than normal Hero population has only a handful of metahumans protecting it. Anything more than half a dozen Heroes is considered a potent force, even for a city as densely populated as San Francisco. The fact that the San Francisco Heroes include Paladin goes a long way to recruiting new members of the Program, and one of San Francisco's new exports has become Heroes.
"Let's go."
Alice throws her arm around Megan. "Don't worry, I've got you." Then she heaves them both over the banister. Fourteen floors pass in no time, and Alice lands with Megan without even flexing her legs. She leaves just a little kinetic energy in the fall so as not to discomfort Megan too much. Alice enjoys a more than casual relationship with gravity, but she's had two years to get used to it, ignoring physics is much harder for most people, even those who can raise the dead.
"Once I got my powers I got really impatient with stairs and elevators. It's really a miracle I haven't put on about a hundred lbs."
She leads Megan down one of the corridors. "So are you feeling food, or booze, or both?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Yeah... And it'll never go away..."
Alice's usually light-hearted manner is interrupted for that moment of seriousness. Then it returns full force "But that's why you've got to make everything else worth it. So that's what we're gonna go and do."
Pulling on Megan's hand, she leads her to the door, yanking it open and heading down the corridor. Said corridor is empty, and contains no cameras, just like the Hero break room contains no cameras. The Program takes the identities of it's best and brightest very seriously indeed. Alice starts towing Megan down the corridor, passing various notice boards tacked onto the faintly off-white walls.
She's more than halfway down it when she turns right and opens the door to a stairwell. It's one of those that leads to the parking garage beneath the building, but only Heroes and the higher ups know that it also branches off to several other parking lots around the area, allowing the Heroes to come and go unnoticed.
Alice is about to leap down the stairs when she stops, turning... She gives Megan a strange look, then races a finger and indicates her current outfit. "Whoops, you should probably change out of that first."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Yeah... Not usually. I mean..." Paladin grins, a wide infectious smile, "I pretty much beg for them to try punching me. Every Brick in the nation seems to want to try their hand against the famous Paladin." She pulls a face and pretends to flex on the couch, grunting inanely.
Then she grows more serious. "It sucks though... When you're not enough..." There's a faraway look in her eyes as she speaks, clearly lost in a memory. "Maybe if you'd been just a bit quicker... Just a bit smarter..." There is a clear change in her as she snaps herself out of the reverie. "But it's stupid. There's no meta that can rewind time, you can't go back and undo it, so there's no point blaming yourself for it."
There is more weight behind her words than her normal carefree tone, and her eyes are fixed on Megan's for a moment before she pulls them away. There is pain there, and heartache, and loss. "If that's what you do then pretty soon you'll find yourself unable to even get out of bed. So you've got to make sure you enjoy what you've got."
She jumps up, propelling herself from the couch in one smooth motion that defies both physics and human anatomy. Reaching out, she grabs one of Megan's hand. "Come on, lets go remind ourselves why we do what we do." | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The opener of the door possessed hair of an equally bright shade as Megan's albeit a contrasting one. Paladin's shock of blue hair was instantly recognisable, and it was shortly after followed by her equally recognisable smile. Between that hair and smile was a pair of tired looking eyes however. They flicker over Megan concernedly, taking in the fact that she was still in part of her costume, and the bag of ice pressed against the back of her head.
"Hey... I heard you had a bad day."
There was no suggestion that the bad day might have been Megan's fault, somehow Alice just seemed to earnestly care about her fellow Hero. An uncharitable individual might claim this was because Menagerie couldn't even touch Paladin's popularity as a Hero. Such a claim would be unfair, for all her faults, Paladin really does care, perhaps to a fault, and the expression on her face shows that she recognises the feelings that Megan is currently wrestling with.
Crossing the room with easy, long-legged strides, Alice sits down on one of the battered leather couches. She's dressed in casual clothes, t-shirt, jeans. Everyone in the Program Offices is cleared, but there's also a back way out of the building in case Heroes want to change here rather than returning home in uniform. She pulls her legs up and sits cross legged on the couch, her battered converse and branded t-shirt highlighting her young age.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The flash of light does it's job, and Paladin looks up to see Punk looking down from above. She's holding her hands apart and then pointing at her feet, but it takes a few goes for the Hero to divine just what it is she's trying to say. The vigilante ceases her gesturing, at least for a moment, before one final gesture, beckoning her to join her.
Paladin lands toe first on the edge of the roof top, only her ability and her sense of balance keeping her from plummeting immediately off the edge. It's close though. She immediately see's why Punk wanted her to stay at the edge of the roof though. Almost the entire top of the structure is composed of glass, save for a walkway and a small building that looks like it might contain a definitely broken air conditioning unit.
The glass is grimy, but intact, and through it Paladin can make out the forms of several individuals. It's too murky to make out faces, but they have to be the people they are looking for. There is also a good chance that they are all metahumans, everyone else involved in the attacks has been thus far.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The offices of the Hero Program loom before them. San Francisco is full of tall buildings, and that leased by the Program doesn't really differ all that much from the rest physically, but it carries a certain aura lacked by the sort of office block that contains call centres and tech companies. There is a certain power that seems to make all other buildings lean imperceptibly away from it. Probably because it is the only building in San Francisco that contains enough destructive force to level the city.
The Hero that is responsible for a good portion of that destructive power wipes meat juices from her chin. "I like that... Waiting for a miracle you'd already received."
It strikes a certain chord in Paladin. Of the six survivors of the accident, she had been the last one to realise her abilities. She'd thought that she'd been passed over in the super powered lottery, then discovered she was one of the most powerful of all of them.
She grins at the macabre Hero. "Got to say though, you've definitely made the best of it. It's pretty easy for someone like me, with my power. It's got to be hard work to be recognised as a Hero when your ability is raising the dead. Cool though it is."
She reaches out one gloved hand and scratches the skull of the squirrel on Megan's shoulder. Once again she marvels at the way the small skeleton seems to react in exactly the same way as a live mammal. It is simultaneously unnerving, and amazing. "I bet you'll get loads of fans."
Had Paladin still been in school, she definitely would have been buying a Menagerie lunchbox.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice found herself in the slightly awkward position of being the one in control, but without any clear idea of what to do herself beyond the basic plan. After all, she wasn't from LA. She'd visited here sure, but it wasn't somewhere she was particularly familiar with. She realises, of course, that this shouldn't be too much of a problem, the car might be an Uber programmed to take them to the centre of LA, but the driver was likely no fool. He was picking two young, good looking girls up from a mansion in Beverly Hills, if he took them somewhere good, no doubt there would be a large tip coming his way. As someone who had once relied on tips to pay rent, Alice understood the though process intimately.
The Uber took off with a surprisingly smooth start, coasting up to what she could see was well above the speed limit. There is a certain degree of discomfort that comes with this, even with her near invulnerability. The crash before the Event still feels fresh in her mind, the pain, the sudden darkness. That's what haunts her most of all. None of them had ever known quite what the Doctor had done to them, but they'd all known that without her they'd have been dead.
She resists the urge to grip the handle built into the door, and instead tries to force herself to relax, turning to Sunny with a (only partly forced) smile on her face. "I feel like I'm really breaking the rules, corrupting a good girl and all that."
Which is an amusing thought, Gravity Girl might be seen as the kiddie (read: girly) friendly Hero of the Program, but Paladin absolutely fit her title in every way. If ever there was a bad boy of the Program, they would be the opposite of her. Presumably they would also be male.
The bar in question looked classy, really classy. Something to do no doubt, with the fact that the Uber driver had collected them from a mansion in Beverly Hills. Money talked, and in LA, it talked real loud.
There was a queue, but Alice and Sunny bypassed it. Clearly Sunny's makeup job had done wonders, the bouncers barely glanced twice at them before letting them in. Now that wasn't technically true, both of the heavyset men stared openly at the two disguised Heroes, while the well dressed men at the front of the queue seemed to be drooling. The whole process was helped along by the large tip Alice pressed into the even larger hand of the bouncer that seemed to be in charge.
She could probably have flashed her Hero License, but that would have then defeated the point of being out without being Heroes. The bar was busy, but it rapidly became clear that this bar was extremely picky with it's clientele. Almost everyone here was stunningly gorgeous. It didn't take long for Alice to realise that without Sunny's touch she would likely have been refused entrance to this particular establishment. The room is crowded, but not so much as to refuse privacy to the patrons of the bar.
Alice almost gulped, before turning to Sunny. "This might be the classiest place I've ever been. Want a drink?"
