Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Hmmm…" Paladin puts a finger to her lips as she thinks. "How about… Frank… He looks like a Frank…"
They have attracted some attention on the street. People are used to seeing Heroes coming in and out of the building, but Paladin always draws the eye. That and the Hero that she is accompanying is new. That clearly is sparking some interest. It probably also helped that one of them was holding an animate animal skeleton. Even in a world of godlike powers, that was something you didn't see every day.
Already a small crowd is beginning to gather as phones are produced and pictures are taken. They haven't quite plucked up the courage to come closer, but Paladin knows that it is only a matter of time before they do and the two of them are stuck answering questions and signing autographs for much longer than she'd like. She can see that several individuals in the crowd are ones that she has seen before, reporters. If they'd been at the front of the group they'd already be on them. As it is they have a pack of fans and casual passers-by to forge through before they actually manage to reach the costumed Heroes.
Turning her attention back to Menagerie and her companion, Paladin scratches the top of the Squirrel's skull once more. She can't quite feel the surface through the thick material of her gloves, but she's aware that the little creature doesn't react quite as she'd expect an animal to. The experience is subtly disquieting, though not disturbing.
Paladin looks up, then extends an arm with a grin. "You showed me yours, now let me show you mine."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Excited to see the demonstration, Paladin takes Menagerie's rushing out of the elevator in her stride. She follows the smaller woman across the lobby and out of the building, though at her own pace, otherwise people might think there is a reason to panic. Instead she strolls through the lobby, easily covering the distance before emerging into the stiff breeze coming off the bay.
She looks around until she spots the flash a bright red amongst the off-white that denotes Menagerie's location. She is crouched over one of areas where the trees grow along this street. The sidewalk has been carefully constructed around a small patch of earth from which emerges a flourishing sweet bay. There are a dozen lining the street.
Coming up behind Menagerie, Paladin goes as if to lean over her shoulder, then stops as the red-head turns, holding up her hands to present something small and as off-white as her uniform. Curious, Paladin leans closer, before her eyes widen in shock and she takes a half-step back. She certainly hadn't been expecting that.
It takes her a second to recover before the grin returns to her face. "That thing is sooooo cute!"
Its probably not even the weirdest thing she's seen since the Event. Leaning down, she reaches out with one hand to scratch the top of the 'squirrel's' skull. Paladin glances up at Menagerie, "Creepy as all hell… But still super cute! What's his name?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Not for lack of trying. Trust me. Still, I can get pretty close."
Paladin grinned as the elevator announced its arrival. "Maybe not on your first trip out though."
Stepping inside, she hit the button for the lobby, standing out the way so that there was plenty of room should anyone else want to join the elevator at other floors on the way down. "I will call you out on the sparring later though, it's better to keep mixing up opponents, otherwise you get lazy."
The elevator started moving, accelerating smoothly and with almost no sound. One wall is curved and composed entirely of glass, said glass allowing the sunlight to pour in once the elevator emerged into the ten-storey lobby. Nobody in the lobby looked up. Heroes were a common occurrence here obviously, and while Paladin was popular enough amongst the regular employees of the Program, you became inoculated to fame once you spent enough time with the real thing. In truth, Paladin preferred it that way. True she loved when the kids got excited, and she got to do things like Make-a-Wish and open sports centres, but she hated the cameras and the limelight.
"So what's your power? No… don't tell me… You can manipulate your bones to make like… blades and stuff?"
Paladin seems just as excited to find out Menagerie's ability as a child might be. Hero she might be, but she's clearly lost none of the appreciation for comic books she grew up with. "If you want to keep it secret though that's cool too. I totally won't take it personally. I know some Heroes like to keep it close to the chest." | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Dom told me there was someone new here."
Paladin's enthusiasm is evident, infectious even. "I always try to meet a new Hero, got to get to know the people I might be working next to."
Having shaken Menagerie's hand she nudged an elbow into her side gently, "Especially one with such a cool costume. I wish I could pull that off."
She turned, walking back towards the elevator, again her long legs easily ate up the distance. Glancing over her shoulders, she beckons for the bony Hero to join her. "Dominic did suggest that we could spar, but I thought that was a bit intense for your first day. Anyway, I'm due out on patrol. Thought you could join me?"
There's no suggestion that she's expecting a rejection. It's not arrogance, just the sort of natural confidence that comes from being the most powerful, and most popular person in most rooms. She probably wouldn't have even realised it herself. Out of the costume she was just a slightly awkward twenty-year-old wannabe chef. Paladin was very much an alter ego in more ways than she realised. It was so much easier to be confident when you could vanish into the crowd simply by taking off the mask.
At the elevator, she turned back to Menagerie. "Up or down?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | A shock of bright blue hair and a broad grin greets her in the corridor. The owner of both the hair and the grin stands noticeably taller than Menagerie, partly through natural height, partly through the heavy duty boots that complete her costume. Said costume could not contrast Menagerie's any more distinctly. Where Menagerie's suit was a distinctly off-white, this one had pure white highlights up both sides and across the shoulders, with purple emblazoned down the centre and a single piece of lightweight body armour on the chest and vambraces. Not that the person wearing the costume needed the armour built into their costume, their power took care of keeping them in one piece.
Paladin winked, her pale blue eyes glinting from behind the purple mask that covered most of her face. "I should hope so, otherwise I wouldn't be asking if you want to join me?"
She took a couple of long-legged stride forwards, one hand extended to shake. There was a positive buzz of energy around the Hero, like the air itself was dancing.
Paladin was the most famous Hero in the Program, and probably the world. When they'd launched, she'd been front and centre, and for good reason. Her ability put her in the top tier of Heroes even two years after the launch and she had a genuine good nature about her that was hard to miss. Her symbol was emblazoned on merchandise across the nation and she had sponsorships with Nike, Under Armour and Gatorade along with a whole host of smaller deals. Last month a reporter discovered that the vast majority of the money Paladin made from these deals was immediately passed on to a wide variety of charities, mostly associated with children and communities. Of course the fact that she'd never told anyone had only made the country love her more.
Despite all of that, she still introduced herself to the bone-themed Hero as if it was unlikely that she knew who she was. "Hey. I'm Paladin! It's great to met you Menagerie!"
She sounded a little like an excited schoolgirl.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Wow… You look amazing."
Sunny did look good. She was clearly a beautiful girl anyway, but seeing her in something other than bright pink definitely took away the childish immaturity that seemed to colour so much of what she did. That was until she squealed the letters OMG and exploded with the excitement of doing Alice's makeup.
Alice wondered, yet again, if she'd made a mistake here. She did look good in the dress, but her own approach to makeup was occasionally a bit of lipstick and some blush if she felt like she had to dress up. It was evident that Sunny wore her make up a lot more heavily, even if it was clearly expertly applied. That and no one ever letting her do their makeup could be something of a warning bell.
Admittedly, the one friend of Sunny's that Alice had met clearly had just as much money as the blonde Hero, and obviously very similar attitudes as to how it should be spent. Alice wouldn't have been surprised if it turned out that the only reason no one let Sunny do their makeup was because their private makeup artist had already done it for them. It seemed in keeping. After all, this was Beverly Hills.
Taking a deep breath to steal herself, she turned away from Sunny, back towards the mirror. It was huge, and she could easily still see the other girl behind her. Nodding, Alice manages a smile that is more confident than she feels about letting someone else near her skin. "OK… make me look beautiful…"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice had entertained the notion that perhaps Sunny's bedroom would seem more like that of a real person and less like that of a Barbie on her second visit. That was not the case. Had it somehow become more pink?
Dropping the many bags they had acquired at the mall, Alice started rummaging through them, sorting her new purchases from Sunny's. It wasn't that she'd been concerned about Sunny's ability to carry them, it was just that Sunny was driving, so it was only fair that Alice carried the bags. That's what she'd said to the blonde anyway. It seemed to go down without much of a fight. Presumably Sunny was used to someone carrying her bags anyway. Not that Alice could really blame her much for that. Or she tried not to, it wasn't Sunny's fault if she'd been raised in the kind of luxury Alice could only dream of.
Finding her new dress, shoes and accessories, Alice changed quickly. She'd been more of a tomboy in high school, but a dress wasn't an alien contraption to her, and minus some awkward contorting to do up the zip, she managed to change just fine. She hastily stuffed her clothes from the day into her backpack. It wasn't as if she'd be needing them for at least a little while. Looking around, she eventually stashed the bag under the dressing table. She wouldn't put it past Sunny to have a cleaner that came through here regularly and she didn't want her stuff being taken away and washed by a member of the household staff. Or burned. They'd probably just burn it.
She checked her phone while she waited for the other girl, tapping out a couple of messages to Ashley, her flatmate. She took a little longer over a message to the boy she'd been crushing on, before tucking the phone away and seating herself in front of the dressing table. Idly she toyed with her hair. Maybe she could get started while she waited for Sunny to finish changing… | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice didn't quite have enough time to hold her breath before she was enveloped in a hug and nearly suffocated by the all encompassing cloud of perfume that came with it. Somehow she managed to avoid choking on it, even as the thick scent filled her nose and mouth. Was protection from her own perfume a side effect of Sunny's power? It was certainly a side effect that Alice would be jealous of.
Finding it hard not to be caught up in Sunny's enthusiastic approval, Alice eventually extricated herself and headed back towards the changing rooms. She had to get the dress off, buy it, and then steel herself for more shopping with Sunny. The blonde Hero had a good heart, but her incessant enthusiasm and apparent obsession with image and fame was exhausting.
Laden down with less bags than she'd feared, Alice climbed awkwardly out of Sunny's bright pink car. Two dresses, two pairs of shoes and several accesorising items of jewellery comprised their haul. It had been difficult to hand over her credit card when they'd arrived at the register. A year of financial security wasn't anywhere near enough to fight off nearly two decades of relative poverty. Even so, she'd managed it, and the nature of the shops had meant that she hadn't even felt that guilty looking at the receipt afterwards.
Sunny had seemed considerably more comfortable with the expenditure. Not that Alice was surprised, she'd seen the inside of her wardrobe. Other than the fact the walk-in was bigger than her entire apartment, it was clear that Sunny shopped. A lot.
What came next wasn't as much of a concern however. Sunny obviously wore much heavier makeup than Alice herself was accustomed to, but she clearly knew her way around a compact. Alice was normally happy with a little bit of blush, mascara and some lip gloss. She got the impression that sitting down in front of Sunny's mirror would result in a lot more. | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The next offering was much more appealing to Alice, mainly because it was far more restrained. Still hot pink, of course it was still hot pink, but it didn't display her musculature in the way the previous choice had. Grateful to escape from Sunny's attentions once more, she disappeared into the fitting room to change into the dress. Coming out again, she twirled in the floaty fabric.
The grin on her face gave away her feelings about this one. Sure, it was PINK. But everything else about the dress seemed perfect. It for her well, tightly enough to show off her form, without giving away the fact that she was more muscular than most men.
She smiles brightly at Sunny, the pleasure evident in her voice. "I love it!"
Finding herself getting somewhat caught up in the moment, and inspired by Sunny's irrepressible enthusiasm. Checking herself out in the mirror for a second, she turned back to the blonde. "Are we accessorising here then?"
After all, Sunny had gotten to buy accessories, shoes and everything else. Alice might not be a 'girly girl', but she now has the money to treat herself to things like this. Before she'd become the face of the Program she was lucky if she could pay rent on time every month. Even for her shoebox apartment.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Hugging her arms tightly across her front, Alice wondered whether she should disagree with Sunny or not. On the one hand, she didn't want to upset the bubbly blonde, on the other, she was really not sure about the dress. Sunny seemed oblivious to her discomfort though, already planning the rest of the outfit and… oh god, a wig. It made sense, it would disguise her, but it did now feel like Sunny was just trying to dress Alice up as herself. She would have to put a stop to this now before it really did go too far.
"It's uh… it's nice… but… do you think maybe there's something that's a bit less… y'know…"
For all that Paladin was the most famous Hero in country, Alice hated being the centre of attention, and she didn't think she'd ever seen a dress that screamed 'LOOK AT ME' quite as loudly as this one did. She rushed to avoid hurting Sunny's feelings. "I love how it fits me, it looks really good, and the pink's nice… it's just… the arms… I don't think I can really pull it off."
It was clear that she was fairly uncomfortable in the outfit, and was likely becoming obvious that Alice, for all that she enjoyed dressing up and going out, was not confident about her appearance. She never had been, having always had a flat chest and little else boys would be interested in. She'd filled out a little as she'd grown older, but now her workout regime and her career meant that she had a toned muscular figure that rivalled most professional athletes. "You should definitely do my makeup though, I don't do a lot of makeup, so you'd have to help me anyway."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Shopping with Sunny wasn't too bad, Alice decided. Mostly the girl entertained herself, picking out items, admiring them longingly, before occasionally taking a picture and putting it back. It was clear enough that Sunny was taking great pains to restrain herself. It wasn't as if Sunny would have any trouble affording these things, but it was clear that the aim of tonight was not to leave with dozens of bags. If she hadn't seen this, Alice wouldn't have believed that Sunny could demonstrate such self-restraint.
Alice found herself regretting her earlier decision only a few minutes later when Sunny pulled out the dress she had decided would be perfect for her. Alice almost couldn't look, and she felt even worse when she finally let her gaze alight upon the dress. It was, true to form, hot pink, worse, the shoulders would make her look like some sort of extravagant French pastry.
She tried hard to look excited, instead producing a pained smile. Alice had grown up a tomboy. She'd had short hair for years, and preferred t-shirts and jeans to a dress. That wasn't to say she didn't dress up in skirts, dresses and so on. She did, just not very often, and certainly not enough that she'd feel confident in a dress that screamed look at me in quite the way that Sunny's choice did.
Breathing out heavily, she took the dress and pulled it to her chest. Turning, she started making her way through the crowded store towards the fitting rooms. There was no queue, and it didn't take her long to change. In fact, it took her longer to pluck up the courage to exit the fitting room and display herself to Sunny.
Eventually she managed it. Unlike Sunny, Alice was fairly flat chested, though the dress seemed to suit that, it certainly displayed her stomach and hips well, making the most of her rather boyish figure. Unfortunately it also displayed how unusually toned and muscular she was for a woman. Her shoulders, her arms and legs, all of them made her look like a professional athlete rather than the chef she purported to be outside of her actual Hero career.
Awkwardly she raises her arms and rotates slowly. "Whadda ya think?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Sunny's reaction was every bit as over the top and excitable as Alice had come to expect. Unlike with the dress however, there had been no hesitation in the blonde girl's reaction at all. That said, Alice was pretty sure she'd seen at least a dozen variations on sandal heels amidst the rest of the Hero's closet, so even if these weren't pink, they at least wouldn't be totally out of place.
She smiled uncertainly at Sunny's next comment though. While Alice certainly didn't go in for the kind of pink flouncy dresses that grabbed her friend's attention, she wasn't totally immune to fashion. She just didn't wear a lot of dresses. Still, she realised that compared to Sunny it wasn't exactly hard to come across as a tomboy, Alice wasn't sure she owned more than one or two items in pink, and both of them were reserved for her boyfriend's viewing only.
Unfortunately, now that they'd found shoes for Sunny's outfit it meant that it was Alice's turn. She liked Sunny, and the girl clearly wasn't oblivious to style, but Alice really wasn't looking forward to being dressed up in hot pink. Still, it was only fair, even if Alice had a sneaking suspicion that Sunny would treat the experience more like dressing up a doll than finding an outfit for a friend.
It was becoming clear that Sunny maybe didn't have the most friends. If it hadn't been for Alice's own boundless energy and enthusiasm for people in general then she might have been long gone. As it was, even she was facing the next ordeal with some trepidation.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Sunny might be exhausting, but her constant enthusiasm for everything Alice suggested was also a little endearing. It was like spending time with a kid, despite the fact that Sunny was actually older than she was. But then Alice had grown up the hard way, in the system, bouncing from home to home. Sunny had clearly grown up with every possible opportunity and luxury. Alice didn't blame the girl for that, but she couldn't help but feel a little jealous and resentful.
Sunny's response to the thought of shoes was fairly clear, so mentally filing away the need for jewellery, Alice led the way to the shoe store. It was several units over, with a large collection of women's shoes in the window. There were a handful of men's shoes too, but they had been relegated to a dark and unloved corner. Clearly this store had a target audience.
Alice didn't even have to pull Sunny inside, and the girl's excitement was palpable. Alice raised a finger like a stern school teacher. "Now wait, we're going to do this properly."
She pointed to the sofa in the centre of the space. "You go and sit there, I'm going to go and ask if they have your size."
She turned to walk away, then paused. "What is your size by the way?"
Size ascertained, she headed off the assistant approaching before she could reach Sunny, "Yeah, we know what we want." She led the assistant over to the display in question, pulling a gold strap sandal heel from the wall. Knowing how awkward shoe sizes could be, she also asked for a size either side as well. With a smile the assistant rushed off to fetch the sizes, and Alice walked back over to the couch to sit down next to Sunny.
"You'll love these."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Agent Elliott immediately began speaking to Director Chavez, focusing her attention on the heavyset Latino to the exclusion of Alice. It seemed odd to the blue haired teen, considering the nature of the briefing. Nonetheless, she did her best to follow along with the information the woman was sharing and ignored the nagging feeling that she knew Elliott from somewhere. As the briefing went on Alice began to get the distinct impression that the pale woman didn't like her. Her dark eyes seemed to flick between Chavez and Rouse, never once glancing over to her. Alice wasn't even slightly egotistical, but she could tell when someone was trying not to look at her.
Things got more confusing as the older agent described the younger woman as a 'unique talent'. What did that mean? Alice could feel her minds fingertips brushing the edge of what might be an answer, but they were pulled away as she made sure to follow the briefing, flicking through the sketched image placed parallel to a photograph of the same rifle. Looking closely, it was obvious that the two weapons were the same. Alice tended to treat any opponent with a firearm as a threat to civilians, if not to her, so she didn't have the expertise to immediately identify the difference. As she continued to gaze at them though, the differences became clear. They were different to the sorts of weapons she more normally encountered.
She didn't comment, however. She was easily the least experienced person in this room, except maybe the record-keeper, but he had at least been through college. Eventually it seemed that the Director was confident enough in Agent Elliott's assessment, and Alice reluctantly dragged her attention away from her as Chavez turned in her direction.
It would have been hard not to look at the older woman, she had the kind of presence that instantly commanded attention. Her words were clear. This operation would be dangerous, the conventional firepower on display only proved that. She wondered just how Agent Elliott had managed to get the information she had, surely if she could get close enough for it they didn't need someone like Alice? The blue-haired teen shook her head without a moment's hesitation. "Thank you… uh… Director, but I don't need to rethink anything."
Alice was under no mistaken impressions as to why she was here. There were plenty of Heroes you could call for stealth missions, but Paladin was a blunt force. She might possess some skills in stealth, but ultimately she did one thing, and she did it well. She hit things. She couldn't have imagined they'd called her in if they didn't think it necessary.
"I can handle anything conventional they throw at me, and it won't be the first time I've gone in blind against a meta."
It wouldn't even be the tenth time. All too often metahumans appeared and started laying about with a power that was hard to predict. Some even had secondary powers hidden away that were just as, if not more dangerous. "It's better you send in someone like me that can take that risk and still have a fighting chance than someone who might get clipped by a stray bullet."
She looked across the group as she spoke, feeling awkward to be the centre of attention in such a professional environment. Strangely, that drew her gaze all the more inexorably to the woman sitting opposite her and steadfastly staring down at the portfolio in front of her. Agent Elliott's gaze was stubbornly resting on that information, but Alice didn't get the impression that it was because there was something particularly interesting there.
Her long fingers weren't even moving, simply resting on the pages. The woman's earlier movement against the table had pushed up her sleeves a little, revealing faintly blue-tinged skin and the edge of a tattoo. Blue tinged skin.
Tattoos.
Black hair.
Almost imperceptible marks where there once might have been piercings.
Alice's jaw dropped.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | That Sunny was bad at talking to boys wasn't entirely surprising. That she had never had a meaningful conversation with one was more so. "You've never…"
To put it simply, Alice was stunned. Sunny was a lot. But she was a stunningly attractive girl. It probably helped that she was also a model and one of the most well known Heroes in the US. Yet apparently she didn't know how to talk to boys. That was something new that Alice would have to factor into their night out. Fending off the advances of various men was half of the experience. Even if it was often the worst part of said experience.
It wasn't as if she had time to educate Sunny about it, or even that much experience herself. "Ummm… I guess we'll deal with that when we get to it. No point worrying about it now."
Fortunately it seemed that Sunny wasn't going to worry about it, as she moved on easily to the next topic. That is to say, beautifying herself. Accessories, clutches, jewellery. Alice was jointly relieved and perturbed. After all, moving on from the last conversation meant an escape, but it was an escape into what inevitably came next. She'd found an outfit for Sunny, once they found jewellery and shoes they would be looking for an outfit for her. That had been the deal, and Alice had no doubt that what came next would be something entirely pink. It wasn't as if she hadn't known Sunny long enough to know what was coming.
"Well let's find you some jewellery then, do you want to get it here or should we go to another store?"
Alice had no doubt that Sunny could afford to buy just about whatever jewellery she liked, but she might appreciate staying in the store. That and beyond matching accessories to an outfit, Alice really didn't know a lot about jewellery herself. She had always picked up the cheap stuff sold by the stores themselves, rather than a jewellers.
"I already know where we can get your shoes though."
She'd seen a pair in one of the stores they had passed that would be absolutely perfect for the red bodycon dress that Sunny was wearing. | © seadra of gs |
