Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | Dominic proved to be less than horrific, even if he looked a little odd in his cobbled together outfit. The three clustered women looked a little less confident than he felt though, and that suited him just fine. Every salesman likes to be in the position of power. Just like the three that had been in the room with him, they were clothed in standard hospital gowns, and not much else. The shapeless coverings shifted oddly in the artificial breeze courtesy of the air conditioning units in the ceiling.
He looked back into the room he had just emerged from, the other two men were moving towards the door, neither wanting to stay behind it seemed. The welcoming grin spread across his features, his artificially whitened teeth standing out bright against his dark skin as he realised that these three must be here for the same reason.
He pointed a relaxed finger at the trio.

Get the Gang Together! Whatever Persephone had been expecting to come out of that door, it was certainly nothing close to the level of relaxed confidence oozing from the man before her. A smile spread across her features. It wasn’t even fabricated, for a change. This was a man who knew how to convince people that he was in total control. She was even slightly convinced that maybe he was in control, where it not for the fact that his clothes looked like they’d danced in a bonfire before affixing themselves to his form. She managed to contain her awe. Whilst, of the girls, Persephone was actually the worst authority on the car crash by a long shot, she decided to speak up. “The crash of June 3rd, yes.” She was acutely aware that this man could probably spot her masked desire to impress him. On the other hand, she didn’t want to feed him too much information either. For all that he impressed her, she certainly didn’t trust him. “We’re looking for answers,” she said succinctly, gesturing to the other women. Claire had positioned herself in front of them protectively – amusingly so, to Persephone. As if the slim, dark-haired woman could have done much against any real threat. Then Persephone realised that the man was not alone, and then she shuffled ever so slightly to the side, suddenly much more appreciative of Claire the Makeshift Shield.

Get the Gang Together! “I’m with you,” Mason said cheerily. He winced a little as the gruesome images flickered in his memory once more, and then shook himself. Snap out of it, man. Dominic had already found somebody. As Mason reached the doorway, he realised that it was more than that. Three somebodies – in much the same position as them. “I was in the car crash too!” he announced, his tone bordering on dangerously cheerful. In his defence, Mason was just excited to see others that seemed to have survived in the same miraculous way that he had. He noticed with a smack of guilt that his sudden appearance was a bit of a shock, and he stumbled over himself to make amends. “I’m Mason, Mason Warner, not that it matters. I… I hope you’re okay-” A mental flash of crimson and glass stopped him in his tracks, and he settled upon a soft, reassuring smile instead. Maybe he’d leave the talking to the others…

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “So I guess it’s the same with you guys as well?”
Alice held up her unmarked arms as if offering them for inspection.
“You remember the crash but there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with you?”
She stepped forward a little, edging around Claire’s shoulder. These guys seemed relatively harmless, one of them was grinning, looking as at home as anyone could in the strangely eclectic costume he had assembled. The other didn’t seem as relaxed, but hardly radiated danger.
She smiled back at the other two girls, none of the newcomers seemed threatening to her, but it looked like they had all experienced the same crash and somehow the same miraculous recovery. It was like they all shared the same overworked guardian angel. It was strange to think that something could be watching over them, but comforting at the same time, after all, what else could explain everything that was happening?
The sounds of the hospital were audible now, it seemed that they were a little out of the way of everything else, but every so often another noise bounced down the corridor towards them. There was the sudden sound of echoing footsteps, they paused, then suddenly broke into a run behind them.
Alice turned, seeing a man in a long white coat, looking exhausted but nonetheless running towards them. He looked tired, there were dark shadows beneath each eye, but somehow he still managed to look energised and enthusiastic, although that energy seemed to come from looking at the small group in the corridor.

| Strange.
What did he know? There had been a car crash on June 3rd. All six of them were involved. All six of them were totally unharmed. It was apparently June 5th.
The pieces didn’t add up, they just didn’t. He had to be missing something. He could still remember the impact, still remember going into shock. You couldn’t recover from something like that without weeks, months, in hospital, and even then you’d probably never be the same.
Yet there they stood, unharmed. Not even a scratch, from a wound that should’ve been lethal.
What the hell was he missing? Had the crash never happened maybe, had it only been mass hysteria?
No, that was impossible. People can hallucinate a lot of things, but multiple people experiencing the exact same hallucination of the exact same incident, something which had left them all in a hospital bed? No.
He needed more information, one of the hospital staff maybe, or another victim of the crash who knew more. He needed to narrow it down.
Footsteps echoed on the floor nearby and Will twisted to look in that direction, catching sight of a rapidly approaching white blur. A doctor maybe, in a lab coat.
“You’re awake! You’re… all… awake…”
A man, sounding tired.
Will brushed past Dominic and Mason from where he had been standing behind them before addressing the man directly. “Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me what day it is. The chart says it’s the 5th, but I’d prefer to be sure.”

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The doctor frowned, “yeah it’s the fifth, but… you don’t understand, all of you have just been in a terrible accident, you need to go back to bed until we can get to the bottom of this.”
Alice responded, puzzled, “I get that we were in this crash, I even remember it… but look at me… I’m not a doctor but I feel better than I ever have…”
Dominic fixed the doctor with his own gaze, this one more questioning than puzzled. “Yeah doc, what crazy secret shit you got us on in here. How are we all perfectly fine after a crash that should have killed us?”
The man opened his mouth to respond, though nothing came out, words seemed to fail him, and he settled at last for exactly the explanation they didn’t want to hear.
“We don’t know... “
He looked exasperated, tired, and more puzzled than any of them. “Look, can we take this conversation out of the corridor? There is still a state of emergency.”

It was a complete sensory overload. The sounds of the hospital and the new voices trying to make sense of it all, the images of the men lining up in front of her much like the women just had from their door, exchanging conversations that were muted and far away as Claire’s eyes drifted around in slow, quiet shock. Everything sounded like it was underwater..
She was thankful that other people had taken charge of the situation and the small talk that was awkwardly forced to try and get on the same page of figuring out what in the hell was going on. Claire took a couple steps back to stay behind the ‘crowd’, mouth slightly ajar and face pale as a ghost as the doctor had rushed after them to explain a simple truth: that they didn’t know what was going on either. This was all some huge joke, a mistake, dream. It had to be.
Somehow her feet had taken their path forward to lead her body almost unconsciously into the men’s room where they’d exited into the hallway from. She was in the corner, sitting on the ground with eyes staring forward and slightly down. None of this made sense and she swore the more agitated or confused everyone else became - whether in anger or in joy - it was hurting her head. More than just an ache.. The pain came from deep inside and was pressing out towards her skull at the back.
Her head gave a slow shake or two and her arms hugged around herself as she stared blankly in disbelief. This wasn’t real and it wasn’t happening. While she should’ve felt incredibly blessed and joyous to know that she should’ve died and was now, somehow, completely and totally in perfect condition, she couldn’t help but feel an incredibly heavy unease at the pit of her stomach that tightened the more intense the change of emotions in the room became.

Get the Gang Together! Persephone vaguely resented being shepherded into yet another featureless hospital room, especially by this flustered man in a white coat. She cast a glance at the first man, having labelled him as de facto leader in her head, and felt slightly more confident in following the group as he too obeyed the doctor’s orders. Her appraisal continued across the rest of the group, noting the odd, trance-like expression on Claire’s face, and flashed all of them her best warm smile. No point making any enemies. “Did you treat us when we first came in?” she enquired, standing across from the doctor. “Surely you must have noticed some signs of recovery, some hint of-” Persephone held back from saying ‘miracle’, refusing to mystify the event “-anomalies?”

Get the Gang Together! Mason watched the other survivors with fascination. They were a varied bunch and he doubted they had anything particularly significant in common. How on earth were the dots connected? Why had they all managed to survive an event that tore him apart just thinking of it? The two guys seemed decent – both impressive in their own ways but not in a isolating manner. The women were all quite young, especially the blue-haired one, and he couldn’t help but feel protective of each of them. He placed a comforting hand on the nearest girl’s shoulder, giving her a gentle shake. She looked a little off – but maybe she just looked pale in contrast to her dark hair.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | He wasn’t exactly happy at being ushered out of sight once more. It was almost as if the hospital was trying to hush up exactly what had happened, which, from a PR point of view made sense. They couldn’t explain it, yes, these few people had survived horrible wounds under their care, but people would ask why, and no administrator would want to have to answer those sorts of questions. They would still know more than he did right now though, so he fixed the doctor with a questioning look, though the dark skinned girl from the other room had already voiced the same concerns as he.
The man looked a little cornered, he laughed nervously, “more than just anomalies, I didn’t treat all of you, just you three,” he nodded towards the girls.
He shrugged, “I can’t discuss it because of patient confidentiality.”
The blue haired girl, clearly the youngest here, interrupted him, “I don’t care… tell us what’s going on?”
The doctor ran a hand through his hair, pausing to think, “you should be dead,” he said simply.
Dominic frowned, “clearly that’s not the case, how could we have been in that kind of a crash and be fine?”
“I don’t know!”
The doctor was clearly agitated now, turning to Alice “look, the fact that you were still alive when you came in was, frankly, a miracle, then that doctor came in to see you…”
“What doctor?”
Dominic had seized on the clue the man had let slip.
“I don’t know, it was chaos in the ER. One of the nurse’s saw her. She came in, pulled the curtains around your bed and then left a few minutes later. After that, no wounds, no scars, no broken bones, nothing. I wish I could explain it, hell, if she’d had wings it would have made more sense, but that’s it.”
He sat down on the bed, “I wish I could tell you what happened, but I can’t.”
Dominic glanced at the blue haired girl, she looked shaken, understandably, but looked up as one of the other girls spoke, “who was the nurse?” | © seadra of gs |

A whirlwind of sensations continued to hit her from every direction, tugging or shoving this way and that. Some of them felt like electricity while others were shards of ice or waves of heat that made her head pound. She probably should’ve been listening, but she couldn’t bring herself to do anything but stare ahead still sitting on the floor with her arms hugging around her torso. It was overwhelming, and if she opened her mouth to speak up now she wasn’t sure what the hell would come out.
But then, almost like a focused beam, every single sensation honed into a single one; calm, defensive, collected, kind. With the hand on her shoulder everything else had shattered away - leaving her taking a slow breath and looking up at the gentle smile the man offered. Everything his face and intentions showed wore off on her as if his palm itself had transferred the energy. After a moment, she shut her parted lips and swallowed to give a thankful, understanding nod that she trusted would require no further information or questioning.
Claire caught most of the conversation then, slowly standing to her feet and still remaining by the man while ducking her eyes away in embarrassment at having just been in some weird state of shock. When the doctor spoke of the miracle, however, she lifted them back up and gazed with disbelief - enthralled and captured by the story. The doctor was even clearly as unsettled as all of them were.. so it was difficult to see why on earth he’d be lying. Which meant that this was all the truth.
As he sat down, Claire finally found the courage to speak up again (albeit softly) at Mason’s side. “Who was the nurse? Maybe she can get us the name of the doctor. I know we all have a million questions but-.. I just want to thank her,” her head shook a tiny bit and she quieted down again, waiting for the man on the side of the bed to answer.

Get the Gang Together! Just as she opened her mouth, Persephone heard Claire ask the very question that had been on her own lips. She felt her opinion rise slightly. Clearly the girl wasn’t an idiot, even if her apparent motives weren’t quite the same as Persephone’s. The thought to thank the mystery doctor hadn’t even crossed her mind. She just needed to know exactly what had happened to her, why the doctor had chosen to help and what consequences lay ahead. It was uncomfortable knowing that she owed someone her life. At least if she could meet the person, get a sense of who they were, then she could either relax or prepare. Persephone was not one for believing that people did anything out of the goodness of their hearts alone. Frankly, Persephone wasn’t really one for believing that there was much goodness in anyone. Naivety, innocence… perhaps. But goodness?

Get the Gang Together! Mason felt a great pang of sympathy for the doctor before them. He didn’t seem to be involved in any kind of conspiracy – he looked just as lost as they were. In a way, Mason could understand the turmoil. He was a practical man himself. Things worked a certain way and once you understood them, you could fix them when they broke. He’d never been particularly studious but he could imagine that a man of science would have a great, intrinsic knowledge about his particular speciality. Doctors faced medical marvels from time to time, watching patients battling the odds, but they also faced death and decline. To have six people standing before you when they, according to your own understanding, shouldn’t even be alive must be an even deeper shock than one might first expect. Mason allowed the memory of the crash to wash over him again, grateful to have kept his hand on the girl’s shoulder to keep him tethered to the present. He had no memory of any ambulances or hospital curtains drawn shut, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there. He shook his head subtly as he turned his attention back to the room. “I wanna thank her too,” he agreed. “I also… want to put on some pants.”

| None of it made any sense. Two days. How the hell could it have only been two days? Even the damn doctor didn’t know.
Shit, he needed to get his priorities straight. Okay, okay. He was alive, it was the fifth, the doctor didn’t know how they were alive. Okay.
Who was the doctor who’d saved them? Dammit, he needed more information to work on. He hated being in the dark. The others were still talking to the doctor, but Will took a couple of steps back from them and rubbed at his temples. He could feel something… weird. It was like something was pressing down on his skull, similar to how he used to feel after spending too long on a case, taking in too many details at once.
Mason spoke up then. “I wanna thank her too. I also… want to put on some pants.”
Of course, clothes. They were still standing around in their hospital gowns. And Will had something else he wanted as well. His glasses, or at least a pair close enough to his prescription to be usable.
First things first though. “Yeah, we do need to thank her. If you could direct us to the nurse that’d be great. Oh, and do you know if my glasses survived the crash? I can barely see anything without them.”
To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | “Glasses... I’d have to ask your doctor, but if there’s nothing in your dresser then they probably didn’t survive…”
Alice realised that she too was dressed in nothing other than her hospital gown, a flimsy, disposable item that did little to reassure her. She clutched it about herself, realising that perhaps Mason had slightly more realistic priorities than the others.
“Yeah guys, I’d love to thank her too,” she turned back to the doctor at this point, “but can I get some clothes?”
He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “Well, we can get you a phone if you have someone to call?”
Alice refused to allow her face to drop, though her voice came out stiffly, “Not… not really...”
The man clearly realised he had made a faux pas, “well, we have a closet of used and donated clothes, I can let you in there when we discharge you.”
“I want to be discharged now.”
Frowning, he shook his head, “we can’t, we have no idea what else could be going on here.”
“I can’t…”
“Look,” he interrupted, his voice low, “you were officially dead for three minutes, we can’t just let you walk out…”
Turning to the rest of them, he held his hands up in surrender. “I’m afraid that goes for the rest of you as well, I can’t in all good conscience discharge you, and as for you guys, you’re not my patients, so that’s out of my hands anyway.”
He turned to head out the door, but paused, looking over his shoulder, sympathy in his eyes “and that nurse… her name was Michelle Franklin… I’ll send her up when I can.” | © seadra of gs |
