Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | “Well that was helpful.”
Dominic’s voice was loud in the sudden silence after the doctor’s departure. “So we don’t know what happened, the supposed experts don’t know what happened, and our only clue is a mysterious doctor no one has seen before or since.”
He smirked at the group, “I’m really hoping that one of you guys is a detective, cause this is starting to sound like something out of a movie, and I don’t appreciate being kept in the dark.”
He looked about, “my phone seems to have taken a hit in the crash, so that’s out of the question, any of the rest of you got one that works? I could do with calling my office, have them send someone.”
This situation was eerie, as if they really had been saved by some sort of guardian angel, a spirit that had appeared to ensure their survival, and then, job done, disappeared beyond the reach of mortal man. Whoever they were, they’d done a great job, Dominic kept himself fit and healthy, it allowed him to work harder and more efficiently. The way he was feeling now went beyond that, it was as if someone had hit the reset button on his body, he felt, to be cliched, like a new man.
He looked at Alice, a little concerned, she looked shaken, and had moved to sit on one of the beds, staring at her hands, her face pale.

Get the Gang Together! The option of wearing something from lost and found was pretty unappealing – no matter how thoroughly he was sure the items of clothing had been washed and sanitised beforehand. He frowned to himself, trying to think of anyone who could help him out. The spare keys to his apartment were with Georgia, his neighbour. She could probably bring something for him to wear upon discharge – not that such an event seemed exactly imminent. “Michelle Franklin…” he echoed. The name meant nothing to him. It was such an ordinary name that it seemed incongruous with the situation, but that was all. “That would be great to see her, thanks.” He gave the doctor a thankful smile as he departed. The seemingly youngest of the three girls had moved to perch delicately on one of the beds. He looked up at Dom, who seemed to share Mason’s concern for the girl. He gave the black-haired girl a reassuring pat as he moved away from her side to sit himself down on the same bed. “It’ll be okay, kid,” Mason said softly. He gave her a tentative grin, trying to coax some of her earlier brightness back into her face. “We’ll stick together til this is all sorted out. What’s your name?”

Get the Gang Together! The doctor was irritatingly lacking in any real information or advice. Hopefully this Michelle would be able to shed some actual light on the situation. She nodded in agreement with the guy who was still very much de facto leader in her head, crossing her arms. “I hope this detective story of ours has a happy ending,” she said with a bemused smirk, keeping her tone light and humorous. She watched as Mason moved from Claire to Alice, genuine concern etched on his face the entire time. It was vaguely condescending. Just because they were younger – and female – didn’t mean they needed his pity. Persephone squared her shoulders pointedly. She didn’t need coddling. She needed answers so she could settle her debt quickly and on her own terms. “My phone’s intact but out of battery.” She shrugged apologetically. “The charger might have survived too, if you want me to go check?” Okay, that was a bit too eager. She wanted to come across as pleasant and helpful without seeming like a complete doormat, and so far she was letting herself get carried away. “I mean… There are people I should probably contact too, y’know,” she explained hastily. It was a half-truth. She needed to let her bosses know that she was still alive before they dropped her from the rotas, but otherwise Persephone didn’t exactly have anyone she wanted to come visit. She could deal with hospital gowns and secondhand clothes for the moment.

Surge The best part of “believe” is the “lie”. | It turned out that they were only caught in the hospital for another day, Dominic was not happy about being kept there against his will, and unlike the others, could afford a lawyer to express that unhappiness on his behalf. Once the hospital had made sure they were aware that they were liable for leaving against their recommendation, it became clear that they were taking a step back.
There had been no sign of nurse Franklin, though the hospital was still busy, still dealing with the aftermath of one of the most horrific road accidents in history. Dominic’s assistant had appeared before they were discharged, eyed up all of them, then returned an hour later with clothes for everyone. Dominic waved off any objections, and with his irresistible enigma managed to convince even the most stubborn of them to accept his gifts.
Then he marched them all down to the main desk where he charmed the receptionist into finding him the nurse. She wasn’t particularly helpful, the doctor she’d seen had been short and wearing the ubiquitous white coat. She hadn’t even been sure on the colour of the hair, in the busy ER it had been the last thing on her mind to commit unusual faces to memory. | © seadra of gs |

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice had been trying to process what had happened to her. Other than Will, who turned out to be a cop, she seemed to have the clearest recollection of what had happened to them, could remember so clearly the pain that had enveloped every inch of her body. That wasn’t what was getting to her though. She could at least think of that as just a bad memory. No, what was preying on her mind were the last words of the doctor before he had left them that first time. She’d died. Not just been close to it. They’d had to resuscitate her.
Would anyone have missed her if she’d died? She had no family, had never had a family…
“Alice?”
She looked up to see Dominic, the man smiling at her, an edge of uncertainty in his eyes. That surprised her. In their whole time at the hospital, short though it had been, she had never seen him look anything other than totally confident. She tried to smile.
“We’ll sort it out, I don’t like being kept in the dark. And you’ve probably noticed that I always get my own way.”
That made her smile a little more strongly, and he winked, before turning to climb into one of the multitude of taxis he had called on their behalf. She fidgeted awkwardly with the hem of her new t-shirt, before turning to the approaching Mason and Claire.
