In the end everything collides 339 @aaron There was a faint sound, like someone exhaling, and Sonnet was stood behind him. She was wearing what looked like a suit of samurai armour, albeit cut down to allow complete freedom of movement. She cocked her head slightly, her face, covered as it was by a stylised black mask, was unreadable. She stood in a casual stance, a relaxed one to the casual observer, but one that any experienced fighter would recognise immediately. It was clear immediately that she knew how to handle herself.
She looked curiously at the three dead, or dying men. Almost as if they were simply entertainment, not actual human beings. Then her dark eyes flashed back up to the Hero in question. Her voice was flat, with perhaps the barest hint of humour.
"You're the new one aren't you? Tank? Something like that anyway."
She was carrying an M4, one of the weapons dropped by the ESU officers. It hung in loose fingers, but something about the way she stood suggested that it could be up and firing in a heartbeat. She let it swing slightly, the metal on its sling clinking slightly every time it comes to rest against the barrel.
The ESU had been little challenge. Conventional police departments were becoming rapidly outclassed by metahumans, although Sonnet had even more of an advantage than most. It was easy to just bring more firepower, but extra firepower wouldn't do much against a metahuman that could simply bend the Universe to dodge bullets. She wasn't entirely sure what this Hero would be able to do to her, but then she supposed the ESU hadn't known what they were going to be dealing with. Why would this man?
She remained standing where she was, the stairs behind her, perfectly composed, and completely unbothered by the fact that this man had apparently just broken someone's ribcage with his foot. He must be some kind of brick-type Meta, although just how tough he was might take some testing.
"So, how are we going to do this?"

In the end everything collides 452 @aaron What was going on was Sonnet. Shortcut, true to her name, had gotten there first.
Eight minutes earlier.
Sonnet stood with her back to the wall, adjusting the fit of her mask. A warning shot came past her cover, and she bobbed her head out for a second, fixing the location of the ESU Officers in her mind. There were two of them, both armed with assault rifles. One of them had trained his weapon on the point her head had popped out, and the other appeared to be pulling a flashbang from his vest.
She stepped a little out from the wall, careful to stay out of sight, taking up a combative pose. Then she jumped, spinning around in a vicious kick. Her boot slammed into the side of the man's helmet, it bounced off the wall with a nasty cracking sound, and as she landed she caught the wild blow the other man swung her way. Twisting, she pulled him over her hip, sending him sprawling. The flashbang he had been holding, its pin already pulled, skittered from his grasp. He swore, scrabbling after it, but Sonnet was already gone.
There was a dull thump and a bright flash, Sonnet returning in time to stomp his helmet repeatedly against the ground until he stopped moving. She vanished at the sound of more Officers coming up the stairs, before appearing in front of them half way through a kick. One went down when it hit him in the throat. The second got off a burst into thin air, then screamed in pain as a Katana was thrust through his shoulder, Sonnet vanished again before reappearing two feet back, launching a vicious kick into the hilt of the sword that pinned the man to the wall.
A moment later a man in full ESU gear was dropped screaming from the top of the building. He was lucky it was only two stories, luckily there was a dumpster beneath him. Unluckily, the lid was shut, and he bounced off the steel lid with the crack of a broken bone. Another took three shots in the chest, at close range, from his own gun. In a matter of minutes a squad of the NYPD's ESU had been removed from the field. At least one was dead, three seriously injured.
The officer looked around at the Hero in relief.
"I have no idea, all I know is we had a full ESU squad in there, and now no one is answering the radio. No way it's normal gang members."
He looked back at the building, shrugging. "It's gotta be a meta, I can't see anyone else doing that to my men that quick."

In the end everything collides 368 @aaron Well he wasn't stupid at least, he had picked up on the hostility that had filled the air as he'd entered the place. It would have taken someone genuinely stupid to not have noticed the stares he was getting. His casual dismissal of it suggested that he wasn't even slightly phased by it. He'd clearly been in a similar situation before, maybe an ex-con.
Unfortunately he was also sharp enough to pick up on the fact that everyone in the room was careful to avoid looking at her. That was probably her own fault. She seemed to have earned something of a reputation for being unstable. It was probably something to do with her habit of excessive violence in reaction to things. The cooks had not been the only ones on the receiving end of her ire. That and her connections. It was unspoken, but common, knowledge that she was a member of the Yakuza, and nobody here wanted to get messed up in that kind of crime. Petty crime yes, but organised crime got a whole lot dirtier a whole lot quicker.
"You could say I'm a regular, I come in here often enough. When you have an appetite like mine you look for deals. There aren't many places cheaper than this."
She avoided the question of why people were so determinedly not looking at her. Probably her lack of answer would give him hint enough. In places like this people only avoided looking at you if they were afraid of you. That left only a handful of possible options for her, few of which were particularly respectable.
She raised an eyebrow at his stare, unimpressed. This guy was clearly confident, and that could carry him far enough, hopefully for him he wouldn't push it too far.
She was interrupted by the buzz of her phone. She pulled the small Motorola flip phone from her pocket and flipped it open, holding up a figure as she snapped into it in Japanese, slipping easily into her native language. Clearly it wasn't good news, and she gave the guy a smile.
"Fun though this is I have to go. Sonnet," she gestured to herself. "Was nice to meet you..?"

In the end everything collides #### @aaron She chuckled as he prodded at his burger.
"Hey, don't give it a warning, it might get away if you take too long."
The worst part was that she believed it when she said it. The food did have that quality that suggested there was some life still in it. At least McDonalds would have had all of the life totally squashed out of it before it was served. She enjoyed the burgers nonetheless, they might have been greasy, but they were filling, and once you covered them with enough cheese and sauce it didn't really matter what the meat tasted like.
"And yet you're still eating it. There's something about it that just demands it be eaten."
She leaned back, taking her time with her last packet of fries, licking the salt from her fingers as she did so. His warning might have been accurate for him, but it wasn't for her. It didn't really matter how much she seemed to eat, donuts, burgers, pizza, sushi, all of it just vanished into the bottomless pit of her stomach. Some had joked that she was just teleporting it elsewhere instead of eating it, but she knew better than to skip meals. The last time she'd done that and tried to jump she'd come out the other end short twenty pounds. Great if you were trying to lose weight. Not so good if you were already thin enough.
"You're new."
It sounded almost like an accusation. This wasn't the kind of place where new people were welcome, and he had brushed off the hostile glares of the patrons and the cooks as though they were nothing, and then he'd sat opposite her. She kind of admired his balls.

In the end everything collides #### @tag Sonnet had ignored the newcomer, giving him a cursory once over when he entered, then, deciding he was not a threat, concentrating on her food once more. It wasn't great food but it had enough flavour and grease to at least fuel her power. She liked to eat well, but sometimes she just needed calories, which was when this hole came in handy, providing vast quantities at more than reasonable prices. She was momentarily surprised to discover that she was shortly to be provided with company.
She looked up, seeing the man walking over to sit down at the table, in one of the last available seats. She glanced at the other tables, all of which were occupied.
"The surfaces or the occupants?"
She licked her fingers before starting on her fries, enjoying the heavy tinge of salt meant to disguise the flavour of stale potato. She didn't much care, and proceeded to wolf them down with gusto. She returned his curious gaze perhaps a little too bluntly, inspecting him even more obviously.
"Why? You trying to lose weight princess?"
Her accent was American, but there was a strange clarity behind it that gave away that she had learned it as a second language. It was just a little too correct. A little too mechanical. She dropped the empty paper bag on the surface of the table, then reached out, pulling the next one in front of her.
"Second meal of the day anyway, plus the donuts this morning. Why? Worried I'll lose my figure?"
She winked at him, smirking. She hadn't seen him here before, and she knew most of the people who came in here. It wasn't the kind of place you just wandered into looking for a bite to eat. The disreputable looking patrons and general smell of rot tended to scare away casual diners. This guy must be something else.

In the end everything collides 414 @ashi8848 Sonnet's phone buzzed and she threw down her cards before picking it up. She lost this round. The man who had won smiled a gap toothed grin and pulled the pile of dollar bills towards himself. She was sat in one of the many illegal gambling parlours run by the Yamaguchi-gumi in New York City. She was losing. She scowled and waved a dismissive hand at the inquisitive face of the dealer as he dealt the next round. She leaned back, pushing the wooden chair onto two legs as she pulled her phone out of the jacket hung on the back of the chair.
Like everyone else in the smokey den she wasn't wearing a shirt, although she was the only one to still be wearing something on her upper torso. It wasn't much however, a simple sports bra, she knew better than to wear anything else when she was planning on visiting these establishments. Her tattoos were obvious, complex and colourful, with rich designs that pulled the eye in and never let it go. She attracted more attention than the establishments other patrons, but not too much. She was a Lieutenant, that in itself was worthy of some respect. And the fact that she had a reputation for brutality towards those that disrespected her.
She raised an eyebrow at the message. Coraline? She hadn't seen Coraline since she'd left to study medicine California about a year ago. And even then they hadn't really been that close. Not for a while anyway. She smiled to herself, remembering their time when they were younger. Sonnet had been twelve when they had moved here, and despite their different heritages and different ages she and Coraline had somehow become firm friends. In an unfamiliar country with an unfamiliar language she'd needed a friend. She owed her a lot.
One of the men across the table made a crude remark in Japanese, and she snapped back something even cruder. The other men laughed at the now red faced individual, and he growled a challenge. She smirked, tapping out a response to the unexpected message.
You'll be back in NYC? We should meet up, grab a drink or something.
She dropped the phone back into her jacket, then dropped her chair back onto all four legs, nodding at the dealer this time. He dealt her back in and she slapped another bill onto the table, grinning like a shark. She had to relieve these fools of their money first.

In the end everything collides 319 words @aaron The place was a hole. Greasy tile walls would greet the eyes of anyone who bothered to step through the door, its paint peeling from rotting wood. The table tops were splitting, the chairs bolted to the floor, when they were still intact that is. A man half-heartedly pushed a mop around the floor. No one had the heart to tell him that he should have a bucket with it. Three cooks stood behind the bar, conversing in a foreign language, apparently arguing over something.
There were two reasons why someone might come into this place. It was out of the way. People only came in here if they knew it was here, or if they stumbled off the beaten track. You rarely saw cops down here.
The second reason was even simpler. It was cheap, dirt cheap. Probably because it was involved in the recipe somewhere. Ten bucks had bought Sonnet three burgers and three large fries. Plus a large milkshake on the house. Although that was probably because she'd only broken one finger the last time she'd come in asking for protection money. They hadn't expected her to appear behind the counter and slam their head into the wall. She pretended not to notice the younger of the three cooks making a sign to ward off evil whenever she entered.
She was halfway through the third burger, the wrappers balled up and abandoned on the greasy tabletop. The other tables were crammed with people, and Sonnet was the only one with other seats available on her table. Most people tended to avoid sitting with her after they'd been here before. This was the kind of place that people visited a few times, and most of them knew better than to bother the petite Japanese woman.
She barely glanced up as the bell above the door rang, and a bulky figure entered the confines of the burger shop.

ATTIRE[break][break]
Sonnet is very aware of her appearance, and tends to wear clothes that flatter her, with a taste for a number of designer brands. She is sensible however, and tends to wear clothes that are practical enough when she is on the job, albeit still with large price tag. Whenever she gets a chance however, she will change into something more feminine.
[break][break]
Since the Event and the development of her abilities, she has embraced the new Hero scene, enjoying the chance to return to her ancestry, however symbolically, and often wearing lightweight Samurai style armour and a stylised devil mask in the vein of the Yakuza. [break][break]
GENERAL[break][break]
Sonnet is average height for a Japanese woman, standing at five foot two, and slender with it, with an athletic figure and an easy, dancers grace that speaks of years of martial arts and gymnastics training. She typically wears her hair short, to keep it from being used against her. Her fringe hangs low over her face, often brushed to one side. Her skin is covered in intricate and complex tattoos of a clear eastern origin, with the exception of a livid scar on her neck, as though someone has tried to cut her throat.
[break][break]
The eyes are windows to the soul, or so they say, what that says of Sonnet is yet to be told. Often smiling, her eyes reflect as much, but are just as capable of going cold and dead when 'business' calls for it. Unusually for her line of work she has an extremely expressive face, and outside of business it is rare that you find her without a broad smile on her face.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]PERSONALITY [attr="class","hopelovetop"]
A pessimist, Sonnet tends to a negative attitude in her outlook on life. However, she is relatively emotionally stable, and it takes a lot to upset her. Her pessimism leads to her expecting betrayal, and she is slow to trust newcomers. As such, she can come across as somewhat cold and even cantankerous on occasion; it doesn't help that she reveals very little about herself. Her sense of humour is somewhat at odds with the rest of her personality, and it is rare to see her without a spark of mischief in her eyes.
[break][break]
One of the first things that seems to define Sonnet is her religion. A devout Catholic, it often seems to put her at odds with her profession as an enforcer, though she somehow manages to make it work. This is somewhat hypocritical, but her religion is nonetheless a crucial aspect of her life. Which leads to the second problem: raised in a strictly traditional family, Sonnet is extremely homophobic. The very root of this hatred lies in her deepest and most secret fear, that she herself may be homosexual.
[break][break]
Sonnet has a single minded determination. Her father died with little, if any dignity left, and she is determined to redeem her family's honour. Ruthless and uncompromising, she doesn't hesitate to make the decisions she deems must be made, and is willing to kill to achieve her aims. She may not be entirely comfortable with her profession, but she has managed to bury her protesting conscience beneath her ambition and sense of honour.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]HISTORY [attr="class","hopelovetop"]
Born in Japan, Sonnet was the daughter of a shatei-gashira, a low-level Yakuza captain. She was clearly bright, and after it became apparent that they could have no more children, the Matsuda's doted on her. Shortly after her twelfth birthday an opportunity for advancement opened up for Matsuda Akinari. He and his family relocated to America, the land of dreams, to run operations for the Yakuza there. This proved to be a huge opportunity for Akinari, and he took advantage of it, becoming a major figure in the underworld of the East Coast.
[break][break]
Sonnet proved to be a headstrong girl, and entirely uninterested in the traditional occupation of Japanese women, housewifery. She was far more interested in her father's business, and a secretly proud Akinari introduced her to all aspects of his business. She showed herself to have a sharp mind, and, still young and innocent looking, she proved more than useful as a lookout and distraction.
[break][break]
Unfortunately for Sonnet, though perhaps fortunately for American law enforcement, things went off track right before her sixteenth birthday. Sonnet's father began displaying symptoms of early onset dementia. For some time, three years in fact, they maintained the illusion that Akinari was still healthy enough to run the Yakuza's business in New York City and along the East Coast. It didn't last. Before long even Sonnet's efforts couldn't conceal the fact that her father was ill, dying. Over the next three years his faculties degraded, another man took over the Yakuza's business interests as Sonnet's father finally lost the last of his dignity.
[break][break]
She laid him in the ground when she was twenty four, then turned her attention to restoring her family's honour, and reclaiming what she saw as her rightful place in the Yakuza. Ruthless and uncompromising, it did not take long for her to rise to a lieutenant's rank, and she was present at a major transaction on the night of 'The Event'.
[break][break]
It was some time later that she realised that she was amongst those affected by the strange things that had happened that night. It took her some time, but tackling the new challenge with the same obsession saw her beginning to master her abilities only a year after 'The Event'.
[break][break]
At some point between 'The Event' and now someone made a serious effort to halt her rise through the ranks, and almost succeeded. The scar at her throat is the only remaining visible evidence of that attempt, while her now far quieter and husky voice betrays the damage done to her vocal chords.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]POWER [attr="class","hopelovetop"][attr="class","hopelovesub"]
ABILITY[break][break]
Sonnet has the ability to apply massive amounts of energy to space-time itself. This has the effect of ripping a temporary hole in the very fabric of reality. Terrifying though it sounds, this ability has a very simple, but effective, purpose. Teleportation. Sonnet has the ability to step from this reality into another and back, apparently instantaneously, allowing her to cover huge distances in a literal blink of an eye.
[break][break]
LIMITS[break][break]
Sonnet can cross vast distances in the blink of an eye, but those distances do not cover the entire globe. In order to teleport she is effectively generating an enormous gravity anomaly that folds space itself, allowing her to simply step from one place, to the next, without apparently moving. The maximum range of this ability is approximately 2,500 miles, and she can only teleport to locations that she can see, or that she has visited before. Even then she needs to be familiar with the location, visiting somewhere only once is not enough for her, it needs to be clear in her mind.
[break][break]
She can take people with her when she jumps, but each additional person severely increases the amount of energy her ability requires. Though she could take one person to her maximum range it would leave her feeling as if she hasn't eaten in a week. Any more than one passenger and her range would be severely reduced. [break][break]
WEAKNESSES[break][break]
Tearing holes in reality takes a lot of energy, and that energy is taken directly from Sonnet's body. As such her appetite far exceeds that of any normal human and she requires somewhere between ten and twelve thousand calories a day, more if she is making more frequent use of her ability. As a result she consumes copious amounts greasy and sugary foods without it having the slightest effect on her figure.
Longer range jumps take more out of her, with her maximum range causing migraines, blackouts and sometimes vomiting. Often she will be left unable to teleport for some time after such long range jumps, and the more people she teleports with the shorter her range and the more it takes after her. Theoretically she could actually burn herself out completely and appear at the other end appearing as though she has starved to death. She maintains momentum when teleporting, so if, for example, she fell off a building she would have to react swiftly before she built up enough speed to leave her a smear on the pavement.
