In the end everything collides 436 @jules @aaron Sonnet gave a nod. Baiting out this group was a logical next step, the way they had operated showed that they were willing to act violently to keep their existence a secret. That meant whatever criminal operation they were engaged in, it didn't require the knowledge of the rest of the underworld to succeed. That was unusual. Most had to at least interact with other organisations. Even the Spades on the West coast had some dealings with the Yakuza and the Triads, they had to. One couldn't simply ignore the biggest criminal organisation in the world.
Apparently, this group had decided they could. They weren't going through any of the major human traffickers in New York, Sonnet didn't have much interest in human trafficking herself, but she would have heard if there was a significant increase in the trade of metahumans. They were an exceedingly rare and valuable resource, or at least the powerful ones were. Anyone on Sonnet's level or above could fetch hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars from the right buyer.
"Bait makes sense." She jerked her chin towards Julia, "But if they've already run into her then they'll suspect something. Especially since you're involved again, if these guys can stay this secret then they've got connections, influence, and a shit load of money. They won't have been able to do this at all if they were stupid enough to get pulled into a trap like that. We need someone they don't know, which means either me or your friend."
She tensed at the mention of the Hero Program, there was now no possible way that the other woman was not a Hero. She shook her head, if Kenshin found out she was dealing with one member of the Hero Program he'd have her finger, if he found out she was dealing with two then he might just take her whole head. Sonnet was rather attached to her head.
"I have somewhere I can take you, it should be safe there, but there'll be a few rules. The first one is to shut up about that damn program." She glanced at Aaron, then back to Julia, "I don't know what kind of person you think I am, but it's not exactly good for me to be seen helping the Federal government."
She paced, stopping a little further away from them and jerking a thumb in Aaron's direction, "I owe you, and I owe them. Maybe if I can prove they're trying to muscle in on our territory I'll get more support, but I can't risk involving the rest of my organisation."

In the end everything collides 338 @maxcaudwell Sonnet had not visited this bar before, and judging by the clientele she saw here, she doubted she would be visiting it again any time soon. She'd already had to less than gently discourage the attentions of one over eager patron at the bar. He was at the other end of the bar now, nursing his red, but unbroken fingers. He would think twice before allowing his hands to wander over strange women in future. Not that re-educating him had been Sonnet's intention when she'd bent his fingers back off her ass.
She'd already paid for her drinks unfortunately, and while it would have been the work of an instant to simply take it home with her, but it wouldn't be wise to do so in such a crowded bar. That and it would burn off the buzz before she had even reached it. The side effect of her enhanced metabolism was that it took enough alcohol to fell an ox just to give her a buzz.
She glanced around the bar, if she wanted to avoid unwanted attention she'd have to find a table, somewhere to sit. But they were all taken, most of them crowded with young groups of friends or couples. Then her eye alighted upon one option, the only option.
Tucked away in the back corner was a booth with a current occupancy of one, a man who seemed to be making a deep study of the beer in front of him. Lifting the bottle of whiskey and glass from the bar, she made her way over to the table.
"This seat free?"
The question was an afterthought, she'd already slit onto the opposite bench. The guy was too focused on the drink in front of him to actually have a friend or partner in the bar. No one with friends studied alcohol with quite that intensity.
She poured amber liquid from the whiskey bottle into the glass she'd brought with her, before beginning to drink.
"Is the beer that bad? Or that good?"

In the end everything collides 345 Locating the safe-house hadn't been difficult, expensive perhaps, dirty cops always were, but it hadn't cost them anything but money. Sonnet was stood on a rooftop across from the apartment that the reporter and his family were stashed in. She'd been around the building twice, easily spotting the plain clothes police officers on guard duty. There was a car at the front, the heavy window tint and clustered antenna's giving away its identity as belonging to New York's Finest. The same went for the car at the back of the building. Clearly the NYPD and the FBI were taking no chances with this witness.
No doubt there would be officers inside the apartment and an ESU team on standby should there be a concerted effort to assault the safe-house. It made sense, the Yakuza did not have a record of rolling over for Police investigations. That and the knowledge that they had a metahuman on the payroll would ensure a solid police presence. Sonnet would not be entirely surprised if they had a Hero on speed dial as well. The man inside the building was a high profile witness, and the best way to deal with a hostile metahuman was another metahuman.
The two plain clothes officers behind the wheel of the unmarked car shifted and grumbled. They'd been on shift for nearly six hours now, with no clear end in sight. The coffee in their cup holders had long since gone cold, but one of them sipped at it anyway. Grimacing at the temperature, or lack thereof. The other pushed his head back against the headrest, struggling to keep his eyes open.
"Y'know, I really don't know how you drink that crap."
His partner sipped at the coffee again. "It was crap when you bought it. If anything it's better now that it's cold."
The other man shook his head in exasperation, "Yeah well then you can buy it next time."
That was when he noticed Sonnet sitting in the back of the car. He went for his gun. She got there first.

In the end everything collides 593 @amora Amora had been awfully silent after Sonnet had come clean, and the Japanese woman had found herself unable to look up from her drink. She shouldn't have felt this way really, ashamed perhaps? After all she had been ordered to do this, and while Amora's presence had been helpful, Sonnet hadn't needed her there. If she hadn't been a metahuman she would have been a liability, as it was she had just been able to care for herself. Sonnet didn't owe the woman anything.
After a moment the other woman spoke, and Sonnet started, almost surprised by the sudden break in the silence. She stayed quiet, listening, stealing the occasional glance at the other woman as she told her story. Sonnet's discovery of her abilities had been relatively peaceful, other than the sudden sense of panic she'd experienced, no one else had died, and as far as she could tell she'd never been in any danger. Other than the sudden increase her appetite had undergone and the large amount of weight she had lost in those few weeks.
Sonnet didn't know why Amora thought her story would matter to her, they were other people, individuals she had never and would never meet. Individuals she had no reason to care about. Amora's tale was both sad and gruesome, traumatic, she imagined, for someone who had lived through it. It didn't affect Sonnet. So why should she care?
Sonnet met the other woman's eyes for a brief moment, defiance steeling her gaze once more, feeling as if the other woman was judging her for her reaction to the story, seeing some weakness, some flaw. She didn't respond as the other woman stood up, her eyes simply following hers as she moved from the booth to the floor beside it. She smiled faintly at the woman's last words as she walked away.
"Nothing?"
"Nothing"
The exchange in Japanese was flat and emotionless, to both voices it was simply a matter of business.
"Impossible, everyone has an angle, everyone has leverage."
"Not her, she's in the kind of career where she's used to people attempting to degrade her. Even if there was an angle, what did you think I might find in a casual conversation?"
The first voice continued, strangely grey in it's tones, as though it were simply recording it's observations of an interesting species of butterfly.
"I feel that you have made a deliberately inferior effort, this is not the first time you have failed when another metahuman was involved."
An edge appeared in the tone of the second voice, wounded pride perhaps, or anger. "I'm not a PI. If you want her investigated get one of ours to do it. It's a waste of my time."
To those unfamiliar with the grey voice they would have noticed no different, but those who knew it, who had studied it's moods would have detected a sudden chill in the air, as of a splinter of ice being silently filed to a sharpened point.
"Be careful shateigashira. Do not forget your place."
There is a sound of shifting weight, and the rustle of cloth as someone bows.
"My apologies, Kumicho. I will of course obey your instructions."
The rustle of papers.
"Go, you have other things to deal with, you are right, I will task another with this assignment."
A pause of indeterminate length, and a sound as though someone has looked up, surprised to see that they are still in another's company. Then a sound like a gentle inhalation, and the papers rustle once again.

In the end everything collides 380 @aaron @jules Sonnet eyed the other woman once she heard that she had apparently killed whatever metahuman had been sent to deal with Aaron. She'd fought him, knew just how tough the brick-meta was, anyone who had been sent to kill him must have been tough, unless the group had underestimated him like she had. Even so, the look she gave Jules this time was tinged with faint respect. At least the woman could look after herself, but then she was a Hero, it was to be expected that she could deal with threats.
"I'm aware of what I do and don't have to do."
She snapped the response. Aaron clearly wanted to think of this relationship as more of a friendship. Sonnet couldn't afford to do the same. He was a Hero, a federal agent. She was a member of the largest criminal organisation in the world. This meeting shouldn't even be happening. But she owed him, and she owed the group that had attacked them both.
Her ill-temper faded a little however at his next comment. She grinned like a shark. "Oh that's what I'll be counting on."
She looked over to Jules as the woman spoke again. Frowning at what she heard. The Yamaguchi-Gumi were heavily involved in human trafficking it was true, but Sonnet had always stayed away from that side of the business. Something in her had always found it distasteful. It had probably held her back in the rise through the ranks. There was a lot of money in that kind of trafficking, a lot of customers willing to pay princely sums. That had only increased since the Event, and Sonnet knew that the brothels run by the Yakuza in New York City had a number of metahumans with special talents within their walls.
"There is a lot of money in metahumans, I can only imagine the price goes up when they're still young, but how would they know that your child has, or will have abilities. And how did they find you. Despite this guy's best efforts," she nodded at the burly ex-soldier, "It's not that easy to find out a Hero's identity. Maybe that's what we need to focus on, find out how they're finding people. Remove that and they'll come out to play."

In the end everything collides 704 @amora A people person Sonnet was not, but she was no idiot. Amora might still have an agreement with them, but she was clearly wondering why she was still here. After all, Sonnet herself had been less than welcoming when the escort had first arrived, and yet here she was in a bar with the woman, acting as though she wanted to learn more about her life. It didn't take a genius to spot the glaring flaws.
Sonnet wanted to just let the woman go, allow her to leave. Why should she care? After all, it wasn't as if they required her services anymore, and it could certainly be argued that she had more than fulfilled her side of the bargain when she'd knocked the European unconscious, fine print be damned. Still, Sonnet had expected at least a little more breathing room before she went straight to the heart of the matter, but Amora was clearly aware that she owed her nothing.
She would answer the question honestly, but something kept her from doing so immediately, she didn't quite understand it, and her mind rebelled against the unconscious desire. Even so…
She lightly fingered the scar on her neck. It looked raw and pink, almost as if it was fresh. In truth it was now nearly a year old.
"A man tried to cut my throat, we… the Yakuza like to think we are honourable, and in some ways, we are. That does not change one of the primary methods for ascension though. One of my subordinates thought he could do a better job than me."
She put her glass down, tracing a finger idly around the rim as she recounted the story.
"It was after the Event. I was still learning how my abilities worked, I'd only had them for a few weeks. No one else knew what I could do. It's probably the only reason I'm still alive. I would have liked to have seen the look on his face when I disappeared after he tried to slit my throat... He was supposed to be a friend..."
She dropped her fingers from her throat now, toying with the half-filled glass on the table. "I went home, ruined my mom's carpet, and she got me to a doctor."
It had been a shady, off the books deal, but the man had been good at his job and he'd saved her life. If he'd been any less effective she'd be dead.
"Apparently if he'd gotten the blade a millimetre deeper he would have done more than nick the carotid, and I wouldn't be talking to you now."
There was a strange tone in her voice as she continued, it had been then that things had really started to change, that Father Matthias' words had seemed to grow more relevant.
"He's dead now, I couldn't risk that he would try again, and honour dictated I defend myself. You know how it is."
She drained the rest of the glass, letting it clink gently against the table as she put it down. She'd avoided the first question. It was bad enough that she had, but her honour would not allow her to go back on her word, and nor would Amora she had no doubt. Screw Kenshin, he could have come to talk to the woman, he was better at this sort of thing anyway.
"Kenshin ordered me to. You're a metahuman, and a powerful one, that's rare, and valuable, he wanted to know if we could use you."
Perhaps they could, the woman was a Hero, her reputation may not be that important to her, but it would be important to the Program, the fledgling organisation would immediately distance itself from any scandals, certainly non-family friendly ones that might arise if information got out about what Titania did in her spare time. No doubt Kenshin would use that information, or at least threaten to.
She doubted the woman would react outwardly, she had seemed fairly controlled all evening, even under the attentions of the European. Clearly she was used to controlling her emotions.
Sonnet stared at the glass in front of her, not really sure what to say and wishing that Amora would just go. Even so, she didn't ask her to leave…

In the end everything collides 393 @aaron @jules Sonnet didn't speak to the wannabe comedian, simply nodding shortly at her, before turning her gaze back to Aaron. After all, he was the reason she was here. He'd called the meeting, presumably to call in the favour she'd owed him. She didn't show the same distraction as he did, confident that there was no one in the immediate vicinity, and even more confident in her abilities to escape the situation if necessary.
Aaron's story grew interesting, clearly the men that had attacked them by the store had been part of the same gang, at least they had been if the method was anything to go by. Using explosives to cover their tracks risked attracting the attention of someone higher up, but it also meant there was little left to look at when said higher ups arrived.
As she listened, Sonnet looked warily at the blue-haired woman once more. We. So she must be a Hero then. The continuing story only confirmed her suspicions, her cover being blown could mean only two things, either she was some sort of confidential informant, or she was a Hero. If she was an informant then surely his information would have been more concrete. Hero made sense, especially if her daughter was already a meta. Heroes were almost exclusively powerful metahumans, it made sense that their children, if they had any, would be similarly gifted, at least inevitably.
"So they have the…" She turned to the woman, "Your child?"
Turning back to Aaron, she mused for a moment, she had already started to put out feelers after she'd been attacked by the group, so far she'd heard nothing of value. But the knowledge that this was not their first attack, and that they seemed to have a clear objective would make a difference. Following those leads would be much more productive than the flimsy ones she'd had to go on before.
No doubt law enforcement would have an interest as well, but the Yakuza had a direct line to the underworld. She would find some information on the group, and then she had a score of her own to settle.
"I will put the word out, I have a few people that deal in information, but it won't be instant. These things take time, take negotiation, encouragement. Do you have somewhere safe to stay with your… friend?"

In the end everything collides 272 @amora It was clear to Sonnet that the other woman was not entirely enamoured of this experience, perhaps it was because she wasn't drinking, perhaps this kind of bar simply wasn't her scene. Or maybe she just didn't enjoy associating herself with people like Sonnet. Sonnet couldn't blame her, but she needed to keep her here, after all, Kenshin expected her to get information about the woman. While the knowledge that she was a Hero was important, he would likely want more. And while she would never admit it to herself, she wanted Amora to stay.
"Well then let's make it more honest. I swear that any question you ask that I am able to answer I will do so honestly"
She raised her glass a little, then tilted it back, letting some of the amber liquid flow between her lips. "Obviously some things I can't or won't tell you. But if that's the case I won't lie, just tell you I can't answer."
Shrugging, she continued, "I suppose you don't have to believe that what I say is true, but I can give you my word that I won't lie, and criminal or not, I won't break that."
Sonnet didn't know whether that would be enough for Amora, but she hoped it would, inexplicably. She reminded herself that Kenshin had ordered her to take this woman and find out what she knew, and as much about her powers as possible. That was what this was for, nothing more, nothing less. Maybe if she revealed some truths about herself Amora would reveal some of her own. That was why she was here. Right?

In the end everything collides 483 @amora In truth, Amora was right, the Yakuza had once had a reputation as a modern day Robin Hood, helping the ordinary man on the street. They had even rebuilt some of that reputation after the 2011 earthquake in Japan. The Yamaguchi-Gumi in New York had sent money and supplies overseas that had then been transferred directly to victims and survivors of the disaster. The Yakuza still called themselves ninkyo-dantai, humanitarian groups, but they had strayed very far from their charitable history.
Ultimately they were still criminals though, they made their money running drugs, guns and people in and out of the countries they operated in. That and high-level financial crime. Sonnet only really had fingers in two of those operations. She'd not shown much interest in human trafficking in particular. Though not through any particular distaste she assured herself.
The goodwill from those actions would not last forever though, and mostly the Yakuza kept to themselves in New York. They ensured that crime taking place in their neighbourhoods was stopped swiftly. Shops paying protection money would not be bothered, nor were tourists. After all, tourists gambling, drinking and sleeping away their money was a major source of income for the Yamaguchi-Gumi in New York City, and the promise of brutal retribution to anyone who harmed them on Yakuza turf kept them safer than in many other areas of the city.
"No, I think most do not appreciate us. But we are a necessary evil."
She drank from the glass again, so her attempt to hide her realisation had been a failure. Her denial was no surprise, of course she would say that. Although the thought that she was genuinely working as an escort for the night was strange, somehow Sonnet found herself believing her. She drained the glass this time. Clearly something about this woman was putting her off her game, she would have to report her true identity back to Kenshin, he would be very interested to know that the escort he had hired was in fact a member of the Hero Program.
She spoke as she poured another glass, "No, perhaps not, no-one has bothered me here before, but then I do not normally bring business to the bar. I forgot that for you, this is exactly that."
It was strange that a woman in the Hero Program, who had sponsorships already and surely was being offered more, would still maintain a job as an escort, surely that wouldn't be good for her image if it got out. Kenshin would certainly be interested in that angle, Sonnet could almost see the expression on his face, and had to crush a sudden inexplicable surge of anger. She stared at the bottle for a moment, was it stronger than she'd thought?
She raised the glass as though in toast, "At least we can be business partners then, rather than enemies. For now anyway."

In the end everything collides 272 @amora "I suppose it was a good thing he attempted to kill us when you were there. The element of surprise that another meta brought only helped. I don't think he expected one, let alone two."
That the Yakuza on the East Coast possessed a meta was not particularly secret, that the metahuman was female was. It was rare enough to have females in the Yakuza, particularly in leadership roles, clearly the European had thought the chances slim that the woman at the meeting had been a metahuman. Or anything other than Kenshin's arm candy perhaps. It would not be the first time someone made that assumption, despite her efforts, and in fairness his, to the contrary.
Amora's words could have been so easily twisted, had Sonnet been so inclined. Making people feel good was exactly what hookers did so well. She sipped at the glass in her hand, although to call them sips would be stingy. "It is," she agreed.
Amora's wandering attention once more caught her eye, and she glanced up at the TV screen that had apparently distracted the escort. She froze as she recognised the eyes on the screen. Her eyes flickering back to the eyes of the woman in front of her before she regained control of herself and finished the glass set in front of her. She used the pouring of another glass to conceal her confusion.
"Well with a power like yours you could definitely go into Hero work. Not that I'm saying you should. My organisation would certainly pay an awful lot to have someone like you in their corner. Just how tough are you?"

In the end everything collides 420 @amora Sonnet shrugged, "Maybe, there's always someone nosy, although no one has ever bothered me in here. One of the reasons I come here so often."
That didn't stop Sonnet from considering the pair a second longer. At least this time she didn't feel an edge of anger, as she had when she'd first seen Amora. In truth, that edge of anger was still, there, just simmering below the surface. It was taking something of an effort to be more than civil with her in truth. There was something about this woman that put Sonnet on edge, perhaps the fact that she had been hiding her metahuman abilities, not that she could blame her. Sonnet didn't exactly advertise hers either.
The Yakuza Lieutenant raised an eyebrow at Amora's comment on taking care of herself. She had seen. There weren't many metahumans that could take a bullet at that close range and walk away without a scratch. Frankly, the thought that Amora couldn't look after herself would have been more amusing. She'd lifted a man into the air with one blow. Admittedly it seemed to come with some drawbacks, like the increase in size that had shredded her outfit.
"I can believe that you can take care of yourself. I did just watch you take down four assassins."
Amora leaned forward, and Sonnet did as well, strangely feeling suddenly interested in what the other woman had to say. When she realised what she was doing she relaxed back in her chair, but the change in posture was clearly abrupt, unnatural.
"I won't lie, I was sure you were there to entertain the European both during and after the deal. It's just the kind of thing Kenshin would do to close a deal. I suppose it's lucky that things went the way they did, I'm not sure what would have happened otherwise."
She had finished the glass she'd poured, so she poured another. It wasn't particularly good alcohol, but it wasn't quite the worst stuff that was on offer. Either way it was strong, and cheap, and Sonnet felt that after tonight she'd need a buzz, however long that would take. Still, she had been given a task by Kenshin, and she should at least appear to attempt it, no matter how much she didn't want to spend more time with this woman.
"I'm sure you'll say no, but powers like yours aren't that common, you could make a lot more doing other things, and you wouldn't get the constant comparisons with hookers."

In the end everything collides 290 @jules @aaron The joke received a baleful glare in response. Sonnet had been hanging back, watching the area to see if anyone else would show up other than Aaron. She halfway trusted him, but not enough to show up to such a hastily arranged meeting. As a result she'd sent a time and then made sure to arrive at the location some time earlier, allowing her to watch the comings and goings of everyone around it. Nothing had seemed suspicious, and so eventually she had popped into existence inside the warehouse, which had led to the poor attempt at humour from the blue haired woman,
Sonnet didn't recognise her, but then she only just knew Aaron, the fact that he trusted her enough for something like this was strange. Although she supposed she did owe him her life, maybe he understood how seriously she would take that debt. That and the men in that video store had tried to kill her too. So she had a more immediate score to settle with them.
She examined the woman a little more closely. She had vaguely Asian features, only a very faint angle here and there, and the larger eyes betraying what seemed to be Japanese roots. Was she part of this deal? An old war friend of Aaron's? No she was too young. What then? His girlfriend? No. A victim of the group then?
She wondered why he had wanted to meet, especially if he had no real information on the group. Unless now was the time he had chosen to call in what she owed him. She narrowed her eyes at this thought, turning her gaze from the woman to the bulky Hero beside her.
"Who's your friend? And why the meet?"

In the end everything collides 209 @amora Sonnet saw the brief glance and wave from Amora, and looked curiously over her shoulder to the couple that had been looking their way. Old clients of hers perhaps?
"Someone you know?"
She smiled, so Amora would be picking and choosing when she was honest, and she wasn't. Perhaps she shouldn't have been surprised; after all, the woman was on the clock, she would answer however it suited her.
Sonnet would rather have been drinking alone truth be told, but Kenshin had made it quite clear that he wanted her to spend time with the woman and find out more about her. Her abilities were clearly potent, and strangely similar to one of the New York Heroes. Something like this could be leverage on one of New York's super powered law enforcers. After all, the escort agency she worked for might be legitimate, but Heroes relied on sponsorships for a great deal of their income, and most companies wouldn't want to have anything to do with that kind of service.
"Well at least your honest about how you see this. And I don't blame you. You don't know me."
She shrugged, wondering how to answer her question. What was on her mind? Maybe it would help to stick with the events of the night; after all, that was what Kenshin would use to manipulate the woman if he could. "Ha, no, I don't think I'll need your home address."
Their drinks arrived, with an assurance that food would be right out, and Sonnet starting pouring the bottle she had been provided with into the tumbler. "Do you take a lot of these contracts? I don't really know your business, but Kenshin paid a lot to get your services, so you must be good, and good means exclusive."
She smirked, "I bet they're not all as entertaining as tonight's was."

In the end everything collides 361 @amora Sonnet hadn't realised that the other woman didn't drink, or perhaps she was just someone who had a strict, no drinks on the job policy. After all, she hadn't touched alcohol while they had been with the European, though Kenshin had hardly touched alcohol either. Sonnet could have forgone, definitely, but it didn't make much difference. The two men would have been unconscious long before the booze started to have any real effect on her. It was both a benefit and a drawback of her ability. Sonnet was no scientist but she knew that to do what she did must take enormous amounts of energy. As a result anything she consumed got burned off pretty quickly, including alcohol.
Sonnet glanced over at the bar as Amora mentioned the bartender, and owner of the place. "Yeah he's pretty good, I've known him a long time. I'm never really sure how much he really knows about what I do, or whether he just doesn't care."
She glanced around at the bar. She did come here a lot, probably because most of the people didn't care who she was. She'd happened upon this bar years ago, by accident, and somehow managed to avoid offending or assaulting the clientele. Most of the people here kept to themselves, and the bouncer at the door was extremely picky, although he hadn't looked twice at Sonnet. When there was trouble Alex tended to deal with it quickly, either that or the rest of the drinking crowd dealt with it themselves.
Most places Sonnet had either learned to avoid, or the people there had learned to avoid her. She was dangerous, and didn't take lightly to having her drinking disturbed. Usually it was a solitary occupation for her, but this was the second time in two months she'd found herself bringing a newcomer to the bar. Maybe that meant something…
"So since you're on the clock do you have to laugh at all my jokes? Or can you actually be a little bit honest with me. Your bill's already paid, and I doubt it would be easy to get a refund out of you even if I wanted to."

In the end everything collides 379 @amora Snorting, Sonnet shook her head and grabbed Amora's arm. "Even I have…"
…better taste that that."
The sentence that had begun in the dingy concrete room ended in an alleyway. A homeless man sat up suddenly at their appearance, he blinked a few times, then glanced at the half empty bottle in his hand. He muttered to himself. "Good stuff."
Sonnet lead the way around the corner, it was a dive she visited a lot, the staff there knew her, and made it obvious as she entered. The bulky form of Alex, the huge bartender enveloped her in a hug only a minute after she'd entered. A rather chagrined pair of women in cocktail dresses stared from the bar as the man clapped her on the back. He raised a hand to Amora as well, "Sonnet, you bring another new friend? I think that you might single-handedly be trying to keep me afloat."
He glanced back towards the bar, then smirked, "Or drink me dry."
The diminutive Yakuza lieutenant pushed the friendly giant away. "Everyone knows I'm the reason you can pay rent Alex, but I'll go elsewhere if you want me to leave your stocks alone."
The man clutched his chest as though wounded, then turned to Amora, "What can I get you. On the house."
Sonnet thumped him, "Where is my free drink?"
He shrugged, "I'd go out of business if I gave you free drinks, besides, she's much prettier than you."
He flashed a grin and dodged a halfhearted punch from Sonnet as he made his way back to the bar. She shouted after him, "And nachos!"
She turned back to Amora, muttering good naturedly, "Asshole."
They took a seat in a booth. The bar was not quite a dive, but it was a far cry from the bar they had occupied earlier that night. The clientele was a mix of disreputable and well-dressed, and the patina on the windows made it clear that tourists were not expected here.
Having been surprised at Amora declining alcohol, she questioned the other woman, "You're not going to preach about me drinking now that you're not on the clock are you? Although I suppose you still are." She glanced at her watch, "At least for another couple of hours."
