In the end everything collides 332 @aaron She briefly narrowed her eyes at his apology, judging whether it was worth acceptance. She nodded once, sharply, "accepted."
His constant suspicion and previous defeat of her was explained a moment later, ex-military. Of course, he'd been too comfortable with the way he had dealt with the other Yakuza present in the warehouse to have come from any other life. Now that it was obvious, she felt foolish for not spotting it earlier.
She shrugged, "The Program hasn't caused us much in the way of problems. The warehouse maybe, but there would have been a similar ending if neither of us had been there. No, metahumans have just made it easier for us to turn a profit."
It was true, the fleshier side of the Yamaguchi-Gumi's business in New York City was booming with the sudden influx of women, and some men, with strange and fantastical abilities or appearance. Apparently there was a girl with a cats tail and ears, and another that was a walking orgy all by herself. Such talents were unique, of course, and so they demanded extremely high price tags. Most of the Hero Program seemed to focus exclusively on metacrime anyway. Leaving most of the organised crime to be dealt with the same underfunded overtaxed departments that had always been responsible.
She hadn't moved as he paced the small room, like a lion in a cage, he seemed restless in the small space. She frowned as he pushed lightly against the door. It was wood, with steel panels overlaid it to discourage any would be snoopers, but the wood within was long since rotted away, betrayed by how easily it moved in its frame. It wouldn't open all the way however, restrained by a heavy, rusted padlock and chain on the outside. Sonnet had placed them there when she'd first acquired the place, and had never removed them. It wasn't as if she needed to open the door.
Her tone was strained again as she spoke. "Problem?"

In the end everything collides 351 @aaron "So why rob an electronics store? If you're so determined to avoid detection and can get hold of enough explosives to wreck a store then why bother robbing the store? Surely it would be cheaper to just buy the stuff they wanted? What could they really be getting out of this?"
She watched as Aaron cleaned himself up, the tap spluttering for a moment, before spitting out a stream of brown water. After a moment the murky liquid cleared, which was fortunate as the man proceeded to fill his mouth with it. In truth Sonnet had no idea if the water in that thing was even drinkable. He was apparently interested in the room, which was strange, as there wasn't much of interest in it.
She frowned at his indirect accusation, "This isn't an attempt to imprison you if that's what you're asking."
She was insulted that he would insinuate such a thing. She might be a criminal, but there was such a thing as a code of honour. The Yakuza was bound by their own code, but Sonnet's was perhaps even stricter than that of the famously honourable Japanese syndicate. She stiffened noticeably, her fists clenching ever so slightly.
"Out of deference to your last victory, I'll gloss over that, but be careful in suggesting such things. When I try to kill you, you will know about it."
A deliberate choice of words, when. After all, the Hero had embarrassed her the last time they had come into contact. Sonnet's reputation was important to her, not least because she was one of the few female members of the Yamaguchi-Gumi, which meant a lot when you were a member of one of the largest and most powerful criminal organisations in the world. She was lucky she hadn't lost a finger after the last time she had gone up against the potent metahuman, but she would be more prepared next time.
It was strange, to have such an ironclad sense of honour, and yet be a member of the criminal underworld. Though strangely, it was rarely her honour that gave her problems.

In the end everything collides 348 @aaron Hearing the whistle Sonnet turned, her gaze searching the street. She spotted a shadowy form beneath the overhang of a bakery, it was waving at her, and while she was pretty sure that was Aaron, she didn't know yet if he had actually survived the explosion. It could have been the person responsible for it in the first place. A moment later she was gone, reappearing about ten feet away, and close enough to confirm that it was indeed Aaron.
She walked closer, pausing a few feet away when she saw that he was clearly hurt from the explosion. If she wanted to kill him, now was her opportunity. She doubted that he would be capable of defending himself with any degree of effectiveness.
Sonnet did not kill him; instead she shook her head in disgust at herself, then put a hand on his shoulder. A second later they would be standing in a small concrete room. There was a sink in one corner with exposed pipes, and the only light hung from the ceiling on a frayed and fragile looking wire.
She stepped away, wary that Aaron could have attempted to use this opportunity to implicate her in something. This room was one of a number she had access to; heavily locked and bolted outside, and existing only as a safe space for her to teleport to should she need an escape route. Hence there was little in the way of creature comforts. A single chair sat in a corner.
"I doubt anyone will find you here."
She leaned against the wall, crossing her arms.
"With the bomb?"
She mused silently. It was unusual, a bombing in New York. There seemed to be little reason to do it, after all the bomb had gone off before the men could have had the chance to get away. And why bomb an empty store anyway? She would have thought terrorism, but it wasn't as if anyone was claiming credit for the attacks. Strange that Aaron would have seen both of them though.
"Someone trying to kill you big man?"

In the end everything collides 294 @aaron "I'll leave those magazines to you, although let me know if you find any half-eaten burgers. Teleporting really takes it out of me."
Her lip curled in disgust at the thought of a group of men attempting to kidnap a young girl. She didn't know why exactly they might try such a thing, but she could imagine. The Yakuza was heavily involved in human trafficking, and Sonnet had her dealings with those aspects of the business, but it was rare that they dealt in children. Usually she turned her conscience away from that side of the business.
Sonnet barely registered the explosion, her instincts kicking in the moment she heard and felt it. She reappeared a moment later in her apartment, in a spot she kept intentionally clear and out of the way so that it would always be safe for her to appear there. It was fortunate that she'd spent so long training those instincts into herself, she'd been stood next to the door of the building. Who knows what might have happened if she had still been there. She focused a moment, visualising the alley she had been in for a moment, then reconsidering.
A moment later she appeared twenty feet further down the alleyway that she had been. Fire and smoke was billowing into it from the destroyed store, but Aaron was nowhere to be seen. She walked back down the alleyway towards it, leaning away from the heat of the flames. She didn't know if the Hero could have taken that blast and walked away, but he wasn't anywhere near the pile of unconscious men by the van. She walked out into the street, wary that she would have to leave soon as she heard sirens in the distance.
"Tank?!"

In the end everything collides 337 @aaron Sonnet hadn't seen Aaron deal with the thieves outside, she was too busy inside the store itself. The size of the group was in itself a surprise, and suggested they were better organised than she would have expected. You were either very stupid or very confident to attempt to rob a store under Yakuza protection. The size and apparent organisation of the group suggested confidence rather than stupidity, which was concerning.
The first man she saw was carrying a large cardboard box emblazoned with a logo and a picture of a widescreen TV. He dropped it and she winced, followed promptly by his wince, or rather scream of pain as she flipped him over her back and onto the floor, followed by a stamp of her foot while she was still holding onto his wrist.
Another man emerged from a door she assumed led to the stockroom, fumbling at his waistband, presumably for a gun. Sonnet disappeared, reappearing in front of him and twisting the gun out of his hands so fast that she broke his fingers. She slammed the butt of the gun into his face and there was a delicious crunch as his nose collapsed under the sudden blow, blood spurting from it as he fell backwards and through the door.
The last one had been crouched by the registers this whole time, and he got a shot off, a shot that passed through thin air as Sonnet was already gone. She slapped the gun from his hands and then deflected his wild blow with an almost careless wave of her arm. He tried again and this time she pulled his arm through, catching his leg with her own so that he tumbled headfirst into the desk that had housed the register. She helped him out on the way down by slamming his head against the heavy wood.
She sauntered out of the store to see the small pile of unconscious men left by Tank.
"Oh, am I supposed to tidy them up as well?"

In the end everything collides 297 @aaron Oddly enough they both turned and frowned at the same time. This was Yakuza territory, and in Yakuza territory they paid protection money. That left two options, either this store had not paid its dues, or the people currently robbing it were stupid enough to rob a Yakuza protected store.
Sonnet was betting on the latter.
She took the bandanna from him, smiling at the makeshift mask. Most of the Heroes wore professionally designed costumes, made from a variety of space age fabrics that offered them extra protection on top of that from their powers. This guy didn't bother with the branding, didn't bother with the image, he just got the job done. She could admire that.
"Fine, no killing, but I'm not promising that they won't wish I did."
She wrapped the black fabric about her face, glad that she had come dressed practically tonight. Not that it would have mattered much, but she would have been furious if she'd gotten blood on a dress. When she was working she dressed in hard wearing, if stylish clothes, for more social events she liked to dress up, or down, often showing off a great deal of the complex tattoos that adorned her figure.
A fraction of a second later she vanished, appearing in front of the man who had his back to Tank and jabbing her extended fingers into his throat. His hands flew to his neck and he staggered back making choking noises. They vanished into a high pitched mewl of pain as she sank her boot into his crotch, then stopped entirely as her knee met his head on its way down.
She looked up at the Hero, the dim light of the alley betraying the savage joy in her eyes.
"Try and keep up."

In the end everything collides 326 @aaron She smiled at the sight of the gun. She'd realised when he'd noticed her, after all, she wasn't amateurish enough to silhouette herself when following someone. This guy had been sharp when she'd fought him, she hadn't underestimated him this time.
She'd been a little surprised that he had been prepared to shoot instantly she hadn't had him down as the jumpy kind, but then he was still alive. She was glad that she hadn't succeeded in killing him the other day, he seemed decent enough, and she certainly didn't want to draw too much of the Program's attention. It was bad enough when a cop was killed, what might happen if one of the Government's new super cops was killed she didn't want to know. Her ability might be potent, but it was nothing next to some of those she had seen on TV.
She shrugged, "I wouldn't blame you for thinking that, I was pretty pissed the last time we met. I'd have tried a different approach this time though."
She lifted the hem of her jacket a little, revealing the hand grenade clipped to her belt. "You might be bullet proof but I doubt you can take one of these point blank and walk away smiling. "
The thing had been expensive. Explosives like this were hard to acquire, although fortunately rarely in demand, though apparently the NYPD were not fond of people carrying them around in the streets. Lifting her jacket had also revealed the gun holstered there, a slim Beretta 93R. It might not have quite the same kick as a 44, but if you put that many bullets downrange then eventually your target would go down. Sonnet found it useful to have something she could fire quickly when jumping from location to location.
She rolled her eyes dramatically then followed him anyway. "Do you know how long it's been since I walked somewhere?"
She smiled, "Probably a whole twenty minutes."

In the end everything collides 493 @aaron It was late, and the Church was mostly empty, the faint yellow light of street lamps entering through the windows and catching dust as it spiralled through the stale air. She had been kneeling at the back of the church for nearly half an hour, her hands clasped and her head bowed. She wasn't sure why she still came here after all this time. Father Mathias had known her since she was young, and he had always had that insufferable habit of being right. He was also one of the only people she actually trusted.
Her mother had brought her to church every Sunday, and through everything she had remained steadfastly religious. Her father had not been as devout as her mother, but he had at least a passing interest in religion. She'd known Father Mathias since she had moved to America; he had always been kind to her, helping her to move beyond her broken English. As such he was one of the few who could speak to her with much in the way of familiarity. And who could tell her off.
As though he could hear her thoughts the priest appeared from the back of the church. He was dressed more casually, in a black shirt and slacks, a brief flash of white at the base of his throat denoting his clerical collar. He spotted her, smiled, and turned to walk down the aisle towards her.
She rose, raising her head, and he paused as he saw the substantial black eye she had received during her fight with Aaron, the Hero Tank. It had been hidden in shadow while she had knelt, but the flickering light of the candles now threw it into stark relief. He frowned disapprovingly, gesturing towards the confessional booth with a questioning look.
She nodded once, and a few seconds later she was knelt outside the booth while he sat inside. It was ritualistic, but to both of them it was important ritual, especially to Sonnet. In this situation Mathias was bound by the seal of the confessional, and Sonnet knew that the Priest would not break that lightly.
"Forgive me Father for I have sinned…"
It hadn't been all that hard to track down the Hero, after all, she knew his name, and his face. She wondered how much that might worry him. She was a member of the Yakuza, a dangerous metahuman, and a confirmed killer after all. On the other hand, he had taken everything she had to throw at him last time, so maybe he wasn't too worried if people could find him out of costume. He must be pretty hard to kill.
She'd followed him from the rooftops, keeping well out of sight and using her ability to ensure that no one could have tracked her movements. Eventually, she found her moment.
There was a sound like an exhalation behind Tank in the alley he had just walked into, then…
"Thanks."

In the end everything collides 364 @ashi8848 Don't apologise, it'd be nice to see you. Haven't seen you in forever.
The man to her left scowled and folded, and she stared blankly at the beside him, revealing nothing. A second later he followed his friend, leaving only her and one other man in the game. The dealer turned over the last card and before she could look she was distracted as her phone pinged again.
Yeah it's still open, I don't go there much anymore though. Would be nice to see the old place.
She dropped the phone onto the table this time, before inspecting the cards laid out on the table, letting the barest hint of a frown escape her poker face. She rapped the table, but the other man pushed everything in. She glared at him and did the same. A moment later the glare was a broad grin as she raked the pile of chips towards herself.
There was a brief but furious conversation in Japanese, before she collected her winnings and headed towards the door. She dropped the velvet bag onto the desk and began tapping out a response to Coraline.
7 sounds great. Meet you there?
A couple of hours later Sonnet was stood outside the diner, fully dressed this time. Unlike the parlour she doubted people would be as accepting of her being half-naked. On the other hand, she also wasn't expected to show her extensive Yakuza tattoos here. Which was fortunate. She wasn't sure how much Coraline knew about her employment. They'd been friends, fast friends, but hadn't moved in quite the same circles. That and her father's job had been relatively discreet. It wasn't like the kids at her school were aware of her hobby as a secret member of the Yakuza. Her mom hadn't even known just how much she got involved in. She might have killed her father a few years earlier if she'd found out.
She smiled as she spotted the figure of her friend in the distance. She took a moment to ensure that her sleeves were pulled down far enough, before opening her arms to enfold the other woman in a hug.

In the end everything collides 288 @aaron Sonnet glared at the man, being reminded that he had beaten her did not do much for her mood, nor did the reminder of just how vulnerable she had been once he had knocked her out. His power seemed to be a physical change to his body; hers was entirely dependent on being aware in order for it to protect her. That and he had that unbearable quality about him that reminded her so much of the priest.
And just like that, he was letting her go, which made her even more furious. Perhaps it was pragmatism. After all, she hadn't found anything that could stop her teleporting. She'd spent some time experimenting with her powers, working out just what she could and couldn't do. As a result she'd actually rented a tiny little apartment out of Manhattan that she'd simply stacked mattresses in. It wouldn't help her if she hit terminal velocity, but it should at least keep her alive if she fell off a building.
She wondered for a moment if dropping this guy off a building would do any damage. He'd seemed fairly tough, taken a kick to his jaw that should have knocked him out without even flinching. But he'd beaten her fair and square; he'd at least earned a respite from her attacks, even if holding herself back felt like a physical effort right now.
She watched as he walked away, itching to try something, but not stupid enough to do so, still groggy as she was from unconsciousness.
She cursed under breath in Japanese, it would take some explaining to not lose the tip of a finger for this failure. With a sound like an indrawn breath Sonnet vanished from the alleyway.

In the end everything collides 277 @aaron So he was pragmatic at least, which she hadn't expected. After all, the Hero program seemed to be an invitation for its members to dress up in tights and wear underwear on the outside of their costumes. This guy didn't fit the image at all. In his slightly homemade looking gear he looked more like a vigilante than someone who was actually licensed to enforce the law. Not that he was doing a great job of that.
She wiped at her face, "I don't know, I'm sure they'll come up with something."
She stood a moment after he did, not willing to display weakness even if it was too late to really be worrying about that. It was humiliating to have been spared like this. At least if she'd woken in Police custody she could have facilitated her own escape, but this was infuriating. She didn't appreciate being treated as if she needed help.
"You white Americans are all the same, you assume that because we live in the same place that we live in the same way."
Her voice was flat, with that strange hard edge that made it clear that it was a language learnt of necessity, not from any love of the place it was spoken. She wasn't as dismissive of America culture as many of her… colleagues… but she was hardly one of its greatest fans either. Right now she couldn't believe that he was behaving as if she needed to be saved.
"A diamond? You think you're going to convert me? Be my white knight?"
She spat, "It's always something like that with men. Got to save the day. Redeem the irredeemable."

In the end everything collides #### @aaron Whether he'd simply absorbed the shot and played dead, or if she'd been unlucky enough that he'd moved out of the way she didn't know. What she did know was that his wildly swinging arm caught her by the jacket and yanked her close, greeting her with a rapidly approaching forehead. It caught her in the face, shattering the mask entirely and snapping her head back. She went limp almost immediately.
She didn't know how long she had been out, but when she woke up she was not in the back of a police car as she had expected, but propped up against a wall in an alleyway. She curled her lip as the stench hit her, there was an open and overflowing dumpster a little way down the alleyway, and one of the bags dumped beside it had split, letting out a pungent aroma.
The man sat opposite her was still in costume, at least mostly. He had pulled down his mask to reveal a strong jawed face. It was the guy from the burger joint. She didn't move, wary that he might attempt to put her down again, more permanently this time. Rolling her eyes, she examined him, looking for any evidence of damage. There were a few scratches and rips in his costume, but whether she had caused that or it had already been there she had no idea.
Her head hurt, and she grimaced as she spoke "So what… you liked the look of me so you aren't going to turn me in?"

In the end everything collides 513 @aaron Realising that the man had now worked out the connection simply made Sonnet shrug.
"I wouldn't have called it keeping secrets. You could have asked anyone in there who I am. Admittedly they probably wouldn't have told you anything. I would have taken a finger for that."
He'd tried to grab her mid kick, but once she'd felt the impact she'd vanished again. It hadn't been hard, it had felt a little like kicking a wall and her instincts had kicked in to whisk her away from danger. The guy was beyond tough. It would almost have been unfair, except the only blow he had landed so far had been as a result of her own arrogance.
He was speaking to her as though he were familiar with her, not as if he had just met her for five minutes in a crowded burger joint. That damn Father Mathias did the same thing, talking to her as if he'd known her for her entire life. Of course, the real reason she found it so annoying when the Priest did it was that he was always infuriatingly right about things.
Unfortunately, so was Aaron. At least about this. He couldn't catch her, and she would struggle to do much more than scratch him. She could have dropped him off the top of the Empire State Building, but that might have been too far. Killing a cop would bring out the fire in the NYPD, she didn't want to think what killing a Hero might do. There were three in New York, and none of them worried her much, but there were others across the country, and they'd already shown that they were quite happy to transfer cities if the threat demanded it. She doubted her boss would appreciate it if she brought the full might of the Hero Program down on the Yakuza's operations in the city.
"It could, but it won't."
That just meant she'd have to step up her efforts. It was a pity none of the ESU officers had been carrying anything with much more kick than a shotgun, although she still had no idea if he could take that at close range. Maybe she should try it out. Having seen his reflexes in action already she knew better than to try and attack him from the front, but with his back against the wall she was faced with something of a problem.
He was playing defensively, no doubt in an attempt to counteract her clearly superior mobility. Her eyes concealed in shadow behind the mask, flickered to the wall he was stood behind. Then she vanished.
She waited this time, not long enough for him to let down his guard, but long enough for him to begin thinking that she might have just left. The room that bordered the one they had been fighting in was suddenly different. With the slight sound of an exhalation she appeared holding the shotgun she had taken from the now unconscious officer in the alleyway outside. She pressed it against the portion of wall he had been standing against when she had vanished, pulling the trigger.

In the end everything collides 448 @aaron When she had reappeared Sonnet noted that he had taken absolutely no damage, although that was more due to his fast reactions than his power. Unless fast reactions were part of it as well. It was always possible, but he didn't seem the type. Just clever then.
She hadn't expected him to completely ignore the effects of the flashbangs. She'd been absent from the room at the time, so had no way of knowing whether the flashbang had caught him or not. It was probably what resulted in her near death. She'd gotten cocky. When she reappeared it was to be greeted by a flying set of shelving. She repeated her previous manoeuvre, flashing past the heavy metal.
A fist met her coming the other way, and it was only a lifetime of training and instincts that made her pull her head back at the last second. As it was the blow was enough to make her spin. She disappeared, reappearing in a different room and out of sight still spinning. The guy hit like a truck.
She straightened her mask, grimacing when she realised his blow had cracked the faceplate. It held together, but another blow like that and it would be gone, if the blow didn't crack her skull anyway. Something to do with resilience then, otherwise his fist wouldn't have been hard enough to damage it with such a glancing blow. She wouldn't be so cocky next time.
She reappeared on the steps, yanking the Katana that had been left there out of the wall. The man it had held up slowly crumpled to the ground with a faint groan. Well he was still alive. That was something. She paused for a moment, looking up at the man at the top of the stairs. Nodding in respect she spoke with that harsh, flat tone again.
"I won't be trying that again."
She wasn't so arrogant as to think it a lucky blow. He'd outsmarted her then. It shouldn't have happened. She wouldn't be so foolish next time.
"It seems that you have the high ground."
And it was unlikely that he was going to relinquish it any time soon. Her vanishing from this position would surely lead to him whipping around expecting an attack from the other side, so she gave him exactly what he wanted. Reappearing behind him and charging… away from him?
Without giving him time to realise what she was doing she reappeared back where she had started, but halfway up the wall, and now with a whole lot more momentum. She'd jumped up before she'd teleported, aiming her heel at his chin as he turned back to face this new attack.

In the end everything collides 392 @aaron In the time it had taken the Hero to leap to his conclusion Sonnet could probably have emptied a magazine into him, or two, in the time it seemed to have taken. She did not appreciate being ignored. Fortunately it seemed that he wouldn't be ignoring her for much longer. Unfortunately that seemed to be because yet another passenger had climbed aboard his train of thought. Him making the connection between her and the burger place was unfortunate, but not too big an issue. Worst came to worst, she would simply avoid the place. She was pretty sure her role as a Yakuza lieutenant was already known to the authorities, whether her power was known was another question.
Judging by the manner of his entrance, and the way in which he had dealt with her former colleagues he was definitely wielding some kind of strength based power. Although whether that included extra resilience she didn't know yet. Odds were it did. Enhanced strength seemed to come parcelled with enhanced toughness most of the time.
"Yeah… shit…"
She was expecting the assault, though not quite exactly as it occurred. Suddenly having a body hurled at you would have taken anyone aback. Sonnet was quick, but it was only her hardened and rehearsed instincts to jump when threatened that got her out of the way in time. She reappeared a few feet in front of where she had been standing, gun up and blazing as the body hit the wall behind her.
She emptied it in his direction, then disappeared before he could respond, leaving the gun to hang for a cartoonish moment in mid-air before gravity remembered how these things were supposed to go. She could have escaped easily. There wasn't a prison in the world that could hold her. But there was merchandise here, hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth. It wouldn't look good.
She disappeared with a sound a little like a gasp as air rushed to fill the gap she had left. A moment later she reappeared clutching a small cylinder in each hand which she tossed towards Tank. They bounced metallically before she revealed the fact that she was still holding the pins for the two stun grenades in her hands. She vanished again, reappearing once she had heard the tell-tale bang in the upper floors of the building.
