In the end everything collides 324 @amora The Yakuza lieutenant shrugged at the apology. "There's always someone who wants to take a shot."
Though efforts this well put together were rare, this wouldn't be the first time Sonnet had been in someone's crosshairs. She had been working for the Yakuza in one capacity or another for nearly twelve years, Such things were simply part of the risk you ran when you worked for a criminal organisation, even one as powerful and influential as the Yamaguchi-Gumi. Especially one as powerful and influential as the Yamaguchi-Gumi.
Kenshin wanted to talk to Amora, but he had seen the bullets bounce off the woman. He was confident, as Sonnet was, that she could be dealt with. After all, nobody was completely impervious to damage. She wouldn't even be the first brick type metahuman Sonnet had fought, they seemed more common than other metahumans, or perhaps they were just more drawn to law enforcement.
She eyed the woman, that niggling familiar feeling itching at the back of her skull again. Where had she seen her before?
Sonnet rested a hand on the other woman's shoulder before they disappeared from the parking structure to reappear a moment later in another office. This one was much more bare, a simple concrete room with a desk and a few chairs. There were two doors. Gesturing Amora to a seat, Sonnet crossed the room to rap on the door. Kenshin appeared through the door, wiping his hands on a towel. A dark concrete corridor was briefly visible before Sonnet closed the door behind him.
He smiled that grey smile to Amora, and then turned to Sonnet. There followed a short but heated argument in Japanese, along with a number of looks directed towards the taller woman. Finally Sonnet nodded, then turned back to Amora. Without another word her superior left the room through the door he had entered by.
"I don't know about you. But I could use a drink."

In the end everything collides 347 @amora At least the woman had not argues over who would take the men, she might be bulletproof, but Sonnet doubted that Amora was prepared to fight her over them. After all, they'd tried to kill her too. She watched as the 7 foot woman picked up the still unconscious assassin and carried him over as if he was an object rather than a person, she felt herself warm to the woman slightly.
Still, she had to carefully watch what the woman was carrying rather than her, since she was still entirely naked. She looked away as she bent to pick up her clothes, holding them in a bundle. She was back to her normal size, and though she was still taller than Sonnet she somehow seemed smaller, less confident. Sonnet mused over her words. Clearly she expected to be taken with her. She would be deposited into a cellar in that case, filled with Chinpira, and no doubt Kenshin by now. Sonnet had felt the eyes of those same Chinpira on her before in gambling dens and drinking houses to know that it wasn't a pleasant experience.
She fought back her urge to blush and look away, giving the other woman the once over, her eyes carefully steering clear of more private areas. "Give me a couple of minutes."
She vanished, taking the European and his erstwhile henchman with her.
A couple of minutes later, as promised, she reappeared, this time with a bundle of clothes in her hands. She dumped them onto the asphalt and immediately turned away, ostensibly to look out at the bodies that were still strewn about the structure, but really so she didn't have to look at the naked form of Amora.
She spoke with her back still turned, "I took my best guess, something in there should fit you."
The clothes still had tags on, but were a fair mix of jeans, tops and a couple of pairs of underwear. Hopefully there would be something in there for Amora so that she was decent when Sonnet took her away from here.

In the end everything collides 284 @amora Sonnet her arms around a man's throat, and she held them there as his struggles grew weaker until they finally stopped. She dropped her arms, letting his body fall forward unceremoniously. Between the two of them, Sonnet and Amora had made short work of the would-be assassins, leaving a number of groaning or dead men scattered throughout the parking lot. Sonnet noted that the other woman seemed to have held back, with that increased strength and toughness, killing the men would have been easy, yet more of her victims were still alive.
Sonnet moved back towards the other woman, averting her gaze from her nakedness. Somehow the woman seemed more confident being naked in front of them than she had before when fully clothed. At least Sonnet managed to control her blush.
She glanced down at the man that she had knocked out, then the European, who was beginning to come to his senses. It was obvious that he had arranged this little shootout, but it would be good to have an employee who could confirm it.
"We'll take both of them, they think they can act with impunity in New York. Clearly we need to send a message."
She looked Amora in the eyes, expecting a challenge to her demand. After all, the woman had been careful enough not to kill the men she had incapacitated. She could not be so stupid as to think the European and his lackey would be walking away from any conversation with Sonnet and Kenshin now.
She glanced around the parking structure, more to avoid looking at the naked woman than for any other reason. "You fight well, I'm impressed. There aren't many that could do this."

In the end everything collides 409 @amora Sonnet and Kenshin reappeared in his office. Kenshin pulled away from her immediately, moving to his desk to pick up the phone. This had been a direct attempt on his life, and such an insult could not go unaddressed. He started barking into the phone in Japanese, while Sonnet pulled her gun out of her jacket, checking it over before cocking the evil looking black device.
Their eyes met for a moment, Sonnet clearly wanted to go back. The attack on Kenshin had been as much of an insult to her as it was to him, more so, as she was responsible for his safety in this situation. He obviously thought for a moment. Sending a group of men would no doubt make things more efficient, but Sonnet had only been stymied by one individual, and they had been a particularly potent metahuman. He nodded, but before he had finished Sonnet was already gone.
Sonnet reappeared crouched behind the car, the sound of displaced air covered by the muffled echo of the gun shots. She could hear the brief conversation, and leaned down to peer under the car. There were still half a dozen men, men who should have been more than enough to kill her, Kenshin, and the escort had they not been metahumans. She almost laughed. What were the odds that of the group these thugs had tried to ambush two of them were metahumans.
Metas were still relatively rare, and while it was a badly kept secret that the Yakuza on the East Coast had a meta. That the meta in question was Sonnet was a well-kept secret known only to a few. The European would have come with a lot more men had he known who he was ambushing. Neither of them had expected Amora to be a metahuman though, and one that could become bulletproof. That was a surprise, and no doubt a piece of information that would become useful later. Now that she had seen her power in action, something was nagging at the back of her head. She pushed it away, then stepped out from behind the car, gun up and blazing.
A man went down immediately as a bullet took him in the shoulder and Sonnet vanished before the men could retaliate, appearing beside another to break his nose with the butt of her gun, before pressing the barrel into his gut. His body muffled the sound of the discharge.

In the end everything collides 312 @amora Sonnet's eyes narrowed in vindication as the European made his move. Judging by his reaction the situation he had something, or everything to do with what was happening right now. It was a double-cross. Kenshin controlled a great deal of the crime on the East Coast of the US, and almost all major drug shipments in New York went through Yakuza hands at some point. Removing him would not have killed off Yakuza presence on the East Coast, but it would have thrown the criminal organisation into disarray.
Fortunately, Sonnet was not attached to the survival of the escort. She went for her gun, or she would have done if Amora hadn't gotten there first. That the woman could look after herself wasn't the surprise, her changing shape was. Her frame grew noticeably thicker and taller, her shoulders and hips broadening until she could have been mistaken for a body builder rather than the svelte figure she had been earlier.
There was a volley of shots as the heavy man emptied his gun into her. Sonnet fully expected the woman to topple, riddled with bullets. She did not expect to hear the sound of metal rain as the bullets bounced off her and pattered to the floor. She hit the man so hard that he spun in the air, tumbling onto the roof of the car. He did not get back up.
Sonnet's eyes widened as she realised that Amora's clothing had not changed size with her. The woman was now almost naked, Sonnet didn't know quite where to look, and once again she felt a flare of anger at the temerity of this woman. Did she think that she was incapable of handling this situation?
With some effort she reigned it in, simply nodding curtly before clapping a hand onto Kenshin's shoulder and disappearing with a sound like a swift inhalation.

In the end everything collides 271 @amora Sonnet reacted instinctively when she saw the driver go down. Dramatic gunfights might not be as commonplace as they had been in the 20s, but they happened, and you either learned fast or you never learned anything again. She pushed Kenshin and Amora down, dropping herself, she spoke urgently to her superior in Japanese.
"Get behind the car, they're after you or him."
She nodded at the European. Kenshin didn't argue, the man could look after himself, but Sonnet was a metahuman, and she could deal with this situation a great deal more efficiently. Glancing over her shoulder, Sonnet rose, spinning and raising one leg to execute a back kick back towards the car. Before it could land there was a faint rush of air and she was gone. She reappeared behind one of the men who had opened fire on the group, and the force of her kick slammed his forehead of the hood of the car. He dropped instantly.
The man next to him turned to fire, but Sonnet forced the barrel up into the air and sank a knee into his groin, vanishing a fraction of a second before another man had the chance to riddle her with bullets. He hit his friend instead, and the windows of the SUV exploded as bullets passed through them.
Sonnet reappeared behind the car, crouching next to Kenshin and Amora. The grey Yakuza boss was holding a handgun of his own. She spoke to him rapidly in Japanese, "They're well-armed, this isn't opportunistic, they knew we were going to be here."
She glanced towards Amora, "Who else knew about this meeting?"

In the end everything collides 332 Nodding, Sonnet took the seat that Kenshin gestured to, adjusting her jacket as she sat. The butt of her gun was briefly visible before the fabric fell back into place, concealing the weapon once more. From the tone in Kenshin's voice it seemed more than likely that she would be expected to use it before the night was out. Her superior had called upon her services for such tasks before, particularly since the Event. Her ability made her an exceptional assassin, able to enter a hotel room without bothering to go through the door.
That and she could be gone quick enough to leave almost no trace, and with no prior criminal record she would be difficult to trace even if she left something behind. "Tell me what needs to be done."
She had slipped back into Japanese, the NYPD had translators of course, but the use of a different language would at least discourage the opportunistic eavesdropper. Kenshin began to explain, it was not unusual, a reporter that was determined to expose some of the Yakuza's more sensitive businesses. She asked briefly what other approaches had been made, then raised an eyebrow, the man had apparently brushed off the offer of a substantial bride, as well as attempted intimidation. Now he was under Police protection. Kenshin had cops on the payroll, and one of them was apparently getting his hands on the location of the reporter turned informant.
Sonnet sat quietly through all of this, asking the occasional clarifying question. She simply absorbed all of the information she was given. She didn't need to ask any other questions, it was clear enough what Kenshin expected to happen next. The man was a threat to their business, it appeared that he had some kind of source that was giving him access to privileged information. Get into the safehouse, then end the threat. Spending time extracting the identity of his source from him would be dangerous, Kenshin would concentrate on finding the mole.

In the end everything collides 374 @amora She still didn't like the woman. Swallowing her pride had been an effort, but it had been necessary to diffuse the palpable tension before the return of their business associate. Not that she'd managed that. Amora seemed to have relaxed, but Sonnet still felt tight as a bow string. She took a breath in through her nose, sending her mind back to a moment years ago, with her father. He'd trained her in several martial arts, but he'd taught her to control herself first of all.
Sonnet was glad that Kenshin had brought her along, it was a rare sign of favour, and she had been able to contribute something to the negotiations. Now though it seemed there was little left for her to say, it seemed a sure thing, the European was clearly a shrewd man, but he had come intending to do business.
Glancing over at Amora again, Sonnet caught the woman studying something in her hand, she recognised the icon as she dropped it to hang once more about her chest. Sonnet looked away swiftly, but she'd seen the St Christopher's medal. She wondered if Amora was actually religious, or simply one of those people that affected the imagery of faith.
It was clear when the European returned from the bathroom that the deal was all but done, his attention wandered considerably from the business at hand after only a few minutes. Sonnet watched as his hands wandered as well, feeling almost irrationally angry at his behaviour. It was as if he was here for the woman, not for the business deal they had done. She restrained herself though, glancing away towards the bar, as though considering buying another drink. In reality she was trying to get a handle on herself, she was honest enough with herself to know that her temper normally balanced on a knife edge, but she was not feeling herself tonight. She flicked a glance towards the escort, was it something to do with her? Perhaps she was rubbing her up the wrong way.
It wasn't long before they were leaving, heading downstairs towards the limousine Kenshin had leased for the evening.
Later Sonnet would reflect that it was probably the moment that everything went to shit.

In the end everything collides 292 @sal It was probably fortunate that Sonnet had looked away at the moment Amora's eyes narrowed. Pity was not the right emotion to respond to her with, certainly not with the mood she was in. Of course Sonnet had no way of knowing Amora's abilities, but then Amora had only the briefest flash of hers.
The older woman's blasé response only angered her more, and she had to almost forcibly restrain herself. Kenshin had not turned, or spoken, but she could tell from his shift in stance that he was listening. She could not lose her temper here and attempt to kill the woman. It would be humiliating to show that the woman was getting to her. Sonnet didn't even know why she was reacting so strongly to the escort; she shouldn't care anything for her opinion.
Sonnet poured out another glass of the whiskey, way beyond the amount that was really respectable. She raised it a moment after Amora did, though her glare was still clear enough.
"Kanpai."
She sounded sullen. And it probably wouldn't have been a surprise to Amora when she downed the entire glass, quickly refilling it. The liquid burned as it went down, but it was good whiskey, better than the stuff she normally drank. Not that it was saying much. When it took multiple bottles of whiskey to get drunk you learned to focus on quantity over quality.
She glanced over at Kenshin again, the man had clearly relaxed. The European was clearly taking his time as well, and so she looked back to the escort. Her voice was hesitant, and she was obviously still angry, "I am sorry, most assume that because I am a woman, I could not possibly be a part of the organisation."

In the end everything collides 356 @amora Sonnet was drinking at least in time with the men, but was showing no sign of the negative side-effects that usually came with the rapid consumption of alcohol. It was a benefit of her ability. The energy that was required to literally tear a hole in the universe was immense, and while no human body should be able to produce that kind of power she could. Admittedly it came at the cost of an inhumanly fast metabolism. She hadn't gained weight since the event, and it took enough alcohol to kill a normal human just to get her tipsy. Still, it meant she could play the part.
She was holding a glass of whatever whiskey the European had ordered. It was good stuff, although probably overpriced, she got the impression that the man had just ordered the most expensive drink on the menu. It wasn't to her taste, but it was smooth, and it was alcohol. She downed the glass, placing it back on the table.
Her vision was remarkably clear for someone who had consumed enough alcohol to render a man twice her weight unsteady on his feet. Kenshin had barely drunk at all. Enough to appear that he was sharing in the European's habits, but she could have sworn he was still nursing the same glass. He was staring into the middle distance, ignoring the two women. Sonnet knew that the meeting was going well, and so it was likely that the Yakuza boss didn't need to talk to her.
"You think because I am female that I am merely a visitor to this world? Someone hired in like you?"
Her accent was harsh, almost mechanical, with the flat note that revealed the fact that it was a second language.
"I removed a finger from the last person who asked me that."
She glared at the older woman, then gestured roughly in the direction of the bathroom, "But I doubt he would be interested in damaged merchandise."
She didn't quite spit, but it was pretty obvious from her tone that she didn't have a lot of respect for the escort, high class or not.

In the end everything collides 291 @amora Sonnet caught the glance Amora threw her way, and pursed her lips in distaste. She could see the curiousity in her gaze, and had to fight the urge to smile as Kenshin introduced her to the European as his lieutenant. No doubt the woman had thought her some sort of arm-candy like she herself was. She would be sorely disappointed.
Kenshin was her superior, and so he did most of the talking, but it became rapidly more obvious why she had been brought along. The areas the man was interested in were her territories and her specialities. He was a drugs trafficker. Sonnet didn't have much to do with it directly, but she ran a network of dealers, collected payments, kept them loyal. It was logical that she should be a part of this negotiation.
Annoyingly, the man kept being distracted by Amora. Not actively, the woman was far too much of a professional for that, but he seemed unable to keep his eyes, and his hands off her. Sonnet didn't have a particularly high opinion of the woman anyway, and it was difficult not to let that opinion spread to the man currently drooling over her. It already had of course, but she had to keep up the pretence that she respected him.
After all, his business could bring the Yakuza millions of dollars. If he thought the woman he was doing business with found him repulsive then he might not be so eager to make dealings with them. She let Kenshin do most of the talking.
Eventually the European went to the mens room, making a crude joke as he left, and Sonnet allowed herself to look the woman up and down. "You seem a little old for this…"

In the end everything collides 414 @amora The secretary who had escorted the woman up here nodded once, then left, closing the double doors of the office boardroom behind her. The room was large, and intentionally impressive, with a large walnut table that stretched the length of the room, and a heavy desk with a sleek computer monitor to one side of it. A projector hung from the ceiling, directed towards one side of the room where a pull down screen had been stowed.
The whole room was tastefully furnished, with the kind of taste that suggested a lot of money had been spent to do so. It was every inch the legitimate boardroom of a respected company. Occasionally legitimate business was even carried out within these four walls. No truly legitimate business would have hired this woman though. Sonnet wondered idly if the woman knew who it was had requested her services.
Kenshin spoke, "No of course not."
He shook the hand she held out.
"I'm sure you have a good idea of why we have procured your services. We have a valued friend that would appreciate your company."
Sonnet rose to go, but paused as Kenshin called her name. "Sonnet-Kohai, I would like you to come along to the meeting."
Ando's stare was yanked back to Sonnet, yet this time it was filled with jealousy, he understood, as did she, that this was a rare mark of favour from Kenshin. She inclined her head respectfully, knowing that she did not deserve this honour, and wishing that she did not have to go. "Yes Kenshin-San, do we leave now?"
He glanced at Ando, his face betraying nothing, then nodded, "Yes."
He held out an arm, which she took, and then she rested a hand gingerly on the woman's shoulder. The world turned inside out, and when it returned to normal they were stood in the garage below the building. Kenshin, used to travelling this way, shook off the nausea with ease. Sonnet resisted the urge to check if the woman was OK, instead striding towards the office that Kenshin's driver used when his services were not needed.
Ten minutes later they were pulled up outside a hotel to collect their guest, a European 'business man' who eyed both Sonnet and Amora before wrapping an arm around the woman hired for his entertainment. There would be some entertainment, more girls, a meal, and copious amounts of alcohol, before they really got down to business. Sonnet was dreading every minute of it.

In the end everything collides 328 @amora Sonnet wasn't supposed to have been here for this meeting, but things always seemed to conspire against her. She was sure that Kenshin would not have kept her around if he could've helped it, the other man in the meeting however, she knew he would do his best to make her life worse.
Ando was a worm, a dangerous worm, but a worm nonetheless. She'd never liked him, he'd always looked at her lasciviously, since she'd helped her father with the business, when she was fifteen. His gaze alone made her feel dirty. If he wasn't her superior she would have beaten his face in. That said, it was tempting simply to remove him from her life by force, and yet he had friends, and she'd have to do it carefully to not leave behind a trace.
That satisfaction would be for another time.
Kenshin had sent his secretary down for the woman while he, Sonnet and Ando finished their business. The woman was showed up and in by the secretary. Kenshin carefully folded up the documents they were examining, while Sonnet signed one last contract. It made life as a criminal a lot easier when there was a legitimate business behind you. Kenshin had a dozen different people ready to support alibis, all of them with perfectly valid jobs as office managers.
Sonnet raised an eyebrow, she could see why her services were being purchased, she was quite beautiful.
She clenched her teeth. She felt a strange sensation in her chest, feeling it worsen as she looked away from the other woman.
Sonnet slipped the last of the papers into a folder and dropped then into Kenshin's out tray. She slipped a final piece into her pocket, that manifest would be important. Kenshin smiled faintly as he retook his seat and gestured for the newcomer to come closer while Ando stared at her with unbridled lust.
"Miss Rivera."
Kenshin's voice was identical to his appearance, colourless and grey.

In the end everything collides 297 @aaron She raised an eyebrow at his apparent lack of a mobile phone. "Right."
She wasn't entirely surprised, he seemed the type. She wouldn't have been entirely surprised if he still had a phone book. That said, he was a paranoid Special Forces veteran, so maybe not. She flicked open the phone to check the number and name, then snapped it closed before slipping it back into her pocket. She'd make sure to avoid using it for other things; it might be useful to have a member of the Hero Program on speed dial. Not that she was under any illusions about the kind of relationship they would have. She was a criminal, he was very much not.
She was moderately impressed when he pulled out the wad of cash, but not entirely surprised, he seemed the kind of guy that would happily pay his way if needed, and he didn't exactly seem to be the type to spend his salary frivolously, even if he didn't get any sponsorships. She certainly hadn't seen any with his Hero name on, and in truth, his image just didn't seem to suit that aspect of the Program. He was too dirty, too gritty, too… real…
She wrote the number of the burner she'd given him onto the card, handing it back to him now that he'd stood. She still had a few of the wings and half of the fries left, and she didn't intend to leave until they were done. She watched him from her seat, nodding a brief thank you.
"Chivalry isn't dead I guess."
She managed to not react to the physical gesture this time, trusting him not to try and start a fight in a crowded bar like this. She picked up another wing as he left.
