Megan's grin widened at the compliment "Thanks! A friend from before I moved sent it to me last Christmas and I really like it". Her eyes widened in surprise as Alice grabbed her hand, realizing what was coming only about second before it happened. At least this time it was a much shorter fall and she knew for a fact the landing wouldn't hurt her instead of desperately hoping it wouldn't, so there's some improvement at least she thought. That still didn't make it any less weird, but as the girl who brought up skeletons she had no real ground to argue from, not that she would have wanted to; as strange as both of their abilities were they were pretty damn awesome to have.
Once landing with the expected tiny jolt instead of the bone-cracking force that would normally come from such a fall, Megan looked up the corridors eagerly. There wasn't really much to look at of course, but she hadn't ever used any of the paths out except one, despite the relative magnitude of the secret exits (something she was still months later internally squealing with glee, how cool is it that they had secret exits?). Despite having visited the building near daily for the last half year she still hadn't seen all it had to offer, and there was still something like seven more Heroes she hadn't said anything more than passing greetings to, a fact that might have seemed less an indicator of how busy she'd been if not for the fact that that was the majority of them.
Chuckling at Alice's comments about her failure to use normal methods of vertical transportation she said "Hey, I'm the one who's method of combat involves zero physical activity. Reminds me, I need to schedule some more training on close-quarters stuff, the ideal is to not be in a position where I need it but we both know ideal conditions are just that" she said, going in her usual wild meandering of vocalizing her thoughts that happened when she didn't actually need to do anything urgently. At the question she gave Alice an over-the-top offended look, gesturing theatrically as if she had been told something a lot less innocuous. "I'm twenty, I don't drink." then with a wink she said "After all that Heroing I'm pretty hungry, I'll defer to the local knowledge on what good stuff there is around here" she said gesturing back at Alice.

Megan delightedly smiled as Alice pulled her along, failing to even notice her clothing until it was pointed out "Ah, forgot I still had this on" she said turning around on one heel and rushing back down the hallway into her changing room. It wasn't that it was recognizable, not an inch of the clothing was visible in costume since her armor had a full bodysuit under the plating, but mostly that it was both not very insulating and gave the impression of tight pajamas covered in black glitter, not only not her look but not really anybody's look. The idea is to not attract much attention after all, as far as the world was concerned right now she and Alice were ordinary young women having an ordinary day together.
Putting the underlayer away with the rest of her costume Megan grabbed her bag. It had been a Christmas present from Emily, a friend of hers from film school. Emily both was good with arts and crafts and a huge Hero fangirl, so she had sent her old friend now moved to San Francisco a present more appropriate than she could have realized- a multicolored backpack with stripes in the colors of the costumes of the cities Heroes, descending from the earliest to most recently recruited. It was very typical of Emily but she'd unknowingly this time given something that felt deeply meaningful to Megan when she looked at it; she could see herself as a part of something, continuing a legacy and leaving one of her own. She ran her hand down the bag, dozens of sets of colors from white and purple right near the top down through greens, yellows, blues, reflective silver, black and pale green, and at the very bottom off-white and light brown.
Coming back out in a pair of very dark jeans, a sky blue shirt, and a light jacket she hadn't bothered to button, Megan came down the stairs with a grin, intentionally caricaturing her comment the first time she'd met Alice. "Alright, Megan is all de-suited and ready to go" she said with a wink.

Megan chuckled at the display her fellow hero made, putting down what by now was quickly becoming a bag of slightly chilly water. "Sadly some of us still follow 'the laws of physics' instead of 'the vague suggestions of physics' so I think I'm going to leave physically competing with Brick strength to you" she said, grin returning easily to her face.
She nodded at the girl's reminiscing, it was the eternal problem of heroes that was one of many things all these writers had gotten correct even when superhuman abilities were the domain of fiction. "Yeah, it can really wear on you even if it isn't all that rational. Nobody can win every fight, there's lot's of us for a reason after all" she smiled, it really helped to have other Heroes to talk to for her, she'd felt incredibly alone in her abilities for such a long time. Even though she had known she wasn't the only metahuman out there, actually being able to talk about it and about her crazy new manner of employment was something she couldn't overstate the value of having. "I don't think I should blame myself... I just still do" she sighed with a smile saying something along the lines of 'Aren't brains absurd sometimes?' and shrugged.
All of a sudden in her usually Paladin-y way of movements that seemed like they would be smugly grinning at the entirety of classical physics if such a thing were possible, Megan found her hand being held by a girl who had moments previously been in an entirely different part of the room. Megan too got up, though with more adherence to the standard functioning of the universe, only just noticing the poster of the city's Heroes hung above the chair she'd been in, it was probably meant as a joke since whoever it was had sharpied over the list of names at the bottom with a written in comment of 'You should know perfectly well'. She quirked her grin at the poster a moment before saying "Of course, lead the way!" with excitement.

Megan adopted her usual impish grin on seeing who had come in. It had been a while since they last worked together but she'd gotten used to seeing each and every one of the city's Heroes around the building in and out of costume if you included people she didn't officially know but could basically guess were Heroes considering their levels of access to the building and lack of any apparent other job, besides there was no mistaking that hair and grin. She hadn't had as much chance as she would have liked to interact with her co-workers, but most seemed rather decent people. Megan's smile faltered just a little bit "Yeah, not too surprised you heard It was... rather crazy"
She stretched up into a less slumped sitting position, blowing a strand of hair from her face. It was good to have somebody else around after all the stress, Megan is a very social person and not having much personal interaction with people since moving had been affecting her more that she'd like to admit. It might have been her own fault for having such a strenuous job, but she really did like doing it. It had certainly changed her, and not just physically because she was starting to develop a bit of proper muscle in her previously twiggy legs from all the patrolling, but because she really felt she was doing some good in the world, giving back after the miracle she had received in her power.
Paladin was one of the most popular people in the nation, perhaps on the planet, and Megan had seen her press hundreds of pounds of metal into the ground hard enough to crack concrete with a light one-handed push, but being around the girl it that was only barely in your mind, she was just so eminently personable.
"Definitely. I mean everyone has bad days right? Just usually they don't involve getting punched hard enough to leave a mark in a plaster wall that's several feet behind you" she chuckled.

Menagerie had been a Hero for almost six months now and had been doing a reasonably good job of it, despite what she'd feared quite a few people seemed to like her, she was popular enough as a Hero but this was San Francisco after all so she didn't even crack the top five of local Heroes, not that it mattered all that much to her. Despite the best efforts of the Program, today had been a day when they got in too late to stop a criminal from escaping, three of them actually, and all that could be done was to look for survivors. Reports were that the three had been incredibly well-organized, but no known affiliations, no non-powered accomplices, and no clue what they were there for. Megan had been brought in to help rescue operations because one of them could create toxic and caustic gas that burned right through gas masks and the building they had attacked was still full of it, and her skeletons could go in with no risk. However, once she got there she had immediately been punched into a wall by one of the trio and they had fled. Megan wasn’t hurt badly enough that she couldn’t help get the survivors out, and now she had returned to the offices. Megan sat down holding a bag of ice to the back of her head, slumping in more emotional than physical exhaustion. She’d done her best, she knew that, but she’d been blindsighted and not only had the perpetrators escaped, neither she nor the program knew anything more than one of their powers, and that another was a brick of some description. She still wore the thin almost glittery looking black clothing that she used under her costume, it wasn’t identifiable since her armor covered it, and it wasn’t like just anybody had access to this… well she assumed it was a break room, she didn’t actually know, what had mattered was that it had a nice chair. The door creaked and opened and Megan's eyes flashed to it. Alice Morrow

Megan could definitely see why Sunny wasn't going to be doing the planning, she had so far been extremely friendly but for one of the most famous Heroes out there it didn't seem like she was high on initiative or creative thinking. 'Everyone has their weak areas I suppose' thought the armored Hero as she was suddenly distracted by being caught up in Sunny's hug.
She kept up her grin saying "Of course. I'm Megan, at least when I'm not in action." Megan was trying not to cough from the heavy perfume in the air, it wasn't even a perfume she disliked the smell of, there was simply so much that it made breathing harder. She couldn't really complain too much though, Sunny's exhilaration was frankly refreshing after a long period of doing mostly rather humorless solo jobs. Then there was the comment on her nails... wait a second, didn't her powers mean it would be literally impossible to damage the nails or the polish on them? Eh, not her concern right now. Megan started moving to go after the girl flew up, only to pause as she almost immediately returned. This was going to be a good bit harder than she had imagined.
Letting out a slight sigh at having to tell somebody how to find a disturbance in the environment of their own home region she said "Alright, lets see... it might help if you flew a bit lower, maybe 10 or 20 feet above the treetops? Here, I'll show the sort of thing were looking for" Megan picked up a fist-sized rock and threw it as hard as she could into the ground, then pushed it with the toe of her boots until it was essentially hidden underground. The dirt around it had been turned over, the plants uprooted. "Imagine if I could do that with something the size of a small car, and that's about what the crash site's likely to be like. Oh and, if you have any more questions, you can use the earpieces" she said pointing at her own ear, hidden behind her hair and the thick straps of her mask "They should have put us on the same channel" she said absently, really hoping that got the point across.

Since becoming a Hero Megan had done all sorts of things she would never have imagined, acting in unusual situations as crime fighter, emergency rescue, and now for some reason crash site retrieval team. It would be a lie if she said she didn't think it was a rather curious thing to send two Heroes in, including one of the program's heavy hitters. Speaking of Gravity Girl, Megan was surprised and just a bit nervous to be working with such a recognizable name, especially given the person it belonged to was incredibly powerful from what she knew. She chided herself for being silly, she had met Paladin, for whom both of these things also applied, before and that had been fine. Perhaps then the issue was that she knew she'd be meeting her fellow Hero beforehand, while by the time she had even had the chance to process Paladin's fame she had already seen how... normal she actually was.
Whatever the case, it was a reasonable mission to send her on, she's been getter better at sensing bones through practice and could use that as a very rough kind of radar, though with her range of four square miles it was going to take some looking, hence the eyes in the sky. Menagerie adjusted her mask, though helmet might be a better word for the dark blue piece of one-way reflective material covering her face from just above her lips up, it's edges the same chalky white as what most people immediately seemed to term 'bone armor'. The armor contained only small linings of actual bone (tests had determined it made her more agile in the suit as sensing the bone made it feel more like an extension of her own body), but the rest of the material, some sort of plastic she didn't know the name of, was the off-white of fresh bone so it made sense.
A vibrant flash of pink came flying down, and Megan turned to see the alarmingly bright outfit of Sunny Slater, her presence also accompanied by an extremely strong odor of perfume that seeped into Megan's mask within moments. She gave a slight wave, adopting an impish grin "Hey! I'm Menagerie, pleased to meet you." she held out her hand to shake. She hadn't been given that much information about her partner but there was a note somebody in the program had jotted down for her saying 'It's probably best if you do the planning' "Yeah! So I'm thinking maybe you do a sweep over the area, look for flattened plants, damage to trees, turned over dirt, that sort of thing. Once I'm within a few miles I'll probably be able to find the exact location, and between you and my skeletons it shouldn't be too hard to dig up. Sound good to you?"

Of course this couldn't be simple. She had suspected the girl might be the very person she was sent after but hadn't had confirmation. Officially, she knew this girl had broken the law (several times over in fact), but try as she might Megan couldn't see the girl as a criminal- she was a frightened teenager on her own in the world who genuinely seemed to want to help. She let out a deep breath and said something she realized she had been holding inside for a while, waiting for someone else like her in this way. "It is... difficult, isn't it, nobody chose what they got, but everyone seems to expect certain powers to be more or less 'heroic'. I think a lot of Heroes are probably more dangerous then us, but people's fear has never been rational."
Megan kneeled down, focusing on a familiar type of signal, and floating up from bellow the ground, a collection of dozens of tiny bones knit together into the skeleton of a squirrel, which climbed around her arm and perched on her palm as she rose "It's not really about what people think in this case though. I... I never really thought I could be a Hero actually, but the world is always so much more complex then it seems- and that's sometimes for the better." she put her arm down, the squirrel scampering to rest on her shoulder "Sorry if I'm rambling on. Anyway, I can't really promise anything conclusively but I want to help. You want to help people and there aren't enough people like that sometimes. I don't think you can legally become a Hero at your age, but I can see how far along to being one I can bring you." Megan held out her gloved hand "Menagerie, San Francisco Hero Program, pleased to make your acquaintance." She was going to have a lot of paperwork to do, but this chance to be compassionate was what she signed up for, to help people in any way she could.

Megan swiveled around as she heard the girl. It was the sort of thing she expected she'd be hearing a lot but there was something about the way it had been said that caught her attention. More of the situation started to click into place in Megan's mind, she took a step in the girl's direction, dismissing her skeletons and causing them to fade into smoke as their bones seemingly returned to their original resting places.
Being a Hero was one of the most desirable seeming jobs on earth while simultaneously being one of the most brutal in practice. Many people said they would want to be one, but very rarely did they realize what it even meant- to be responsible for the safety of people at all times, to be placed in situations there was no way to prepare for against opponents you could never have predicted, to hide who you even were from the world just to get a chance for peace and quiet every once and a while. Most people said the words the girl had with a wishful undercurrent; she had said it more like a goal.
Softly, Megan said "Are you sure? It's a tough way to live honestly, though... I suppose you get hat that's like already" she sighed and cracked a small smile "Nonetheless, an admirable sentiment, there's not nearly enough people around who truly want to help" Megan probably could have listed a number of reasons why the girl couldn't be a hero (for a few more years at any rate), but she had never wanted to be that sort of a person. What mattered was that there was a voice to be heard, not who it belonged to.

Oh. Megan was cursing herself for not realizing what the girl had assumed earlier. Her costume was mostly polymer with very small amounts of actual bone but that wasn't very obvious in the faint light of the approaching dawn and either way she couldn't really help what the skeletons themselves looked like, so there was only so much she could do in the first place to reduce how intimidating she looked. She certainly wasn't happy about being hit with a metal bat but in retrospect it was a damn brave thing to do.
Moreover this girl seemed to have a remarkable talent for pushing people's buttons, not a lot really aggravated Megan but keeping her cool here was becoming a challenge.
She sighed "I didn't get to choose what powers I got, but I get to choose what to do with them. Now I really do have a job to do finding somebody, so look..." she sighed "Stay safe and stop hitting people and I'll be on my way. Deal?"

For somebody who came across as rather silly Kathy could deliver a point quite well, Megan mused at her speech. It was true that the world had gotten rather crazy and a lot more dangerous, but that was distracting some people from the fact that the sort of heroes millions had idolized and loved stories of now existed. The very choice to do the whole costumes and code-name thing showed a recognition of this. There were plenty of things out there to be frightened of, and not nearly enough to be a source of hope. Doing the right thing was great, but inspiring others to believe in doing the right thing was a much bigger task.
Megan grasped her hands together absentmindedly, leaning into the conversation with her enthusiasm once again rising. "Somehow I end up getting a lot of my conversations sidetracked with discussions of philosophy. But to answer your questions I'm still really setting up here as far as personal life goes, I don't really know many people outside my coworkers yet but I'm getting along with most of them. San Francisco is... different than I'm used to, more chaotic really but it kind of feels more alive because of that" she smiled "So how about you? It's been a while since I was last on the east coast, anything interesting going on over in New York recently?"

Menagerie nodded along with the explanation of the MNRU's psychological effects, though she was thinking of a different sort of city where it was challenging to be a metahuman that she was more familiar with, ones that simply had not yet caught up to their existence and had no visible local presence of them in heroes or criminals. It made it easy to feel alone despite the likelihood that hundreds of other metahumans were in the city too. She carefully started on her food as they continued on, it was certainly delicious though it was the kind of food she usually wouldn't have elected to eat while walking, and while her mask left more than enough mouth exposed to eat it was a task that would take some getting used to (not that it was difficult, Menagerie just felt strange doing it).
The sheer earnestness of Paladin's explanation of her motivations caught Menagerie's attention, and she pauses to consider after being asked for her own. "I feel like I ought to be able to give a definite answer to that, you know? But really it wasn't a thing that made me change my mind so much as a bunch of different things that caused me to reevaluate my thoughts". she chuckles "Not very dramatic or motivational as origins go but things just sorta happen that way. Few years ago there weren't Heroes and a few before that the very idea of actual Superheroes would have seemed crazy and yet here I am working as one. What I'm trying to say is that I did nothing to help people for most of my life because I couldn't, now that I could what the hell was I doing still just twiddling my thumbs? I was waiting for a miracle I had already received." she smiles sheepishly.

"Honestly for the area I think I got a pretty decent deal. Everywhere seems to be getting progressively more expensive like every week" Menagerie said with a slight chuckle. It was something most young adults had trouble with at some point but the prices were most definitely higher in San Francisco than she had seen before, especially considering that voice acting had per-job payment so the cash she had on hand could vary wildly. She gratefully took her food, thanking the chef with an impish grin still on her face, the heat of it evident even through her gloves elastic and vaguely cloth-like material she couldn't really identify with any confidence. He was certainly right that there wasn't really a lot of room for more things on the truck's walls, though she also would have said that if it was far less full yet more room had somehow been found.
Nodding along with what Paladin said Menagerie noted "Seems a little odd that a neurology lab would have that large of a effect but it makes sense I suppose. I get that it's a high-population city and all but it feels sometimes like there's a really proportionally high number of Metahumans here" she shrugged. Her smile faded at Paladin's words after that though. "I mean... I haven't been out doing heroing for long of course so not... quite, but the reason I haven't been is in part because of that very thing. I never really figured myself as Hero material for a few reasons" there was of course the obvious fact of her powers nature, as well as the fact that he wasn't very good at following orders and just barely passed the program's physicals, and even that she couldn't so much fight very well herself as much as create others to fight for her.

Menagerie nodded quietly along with Paladin's moment of introspection for a while before saying "I've quite enjoyed talking to you Paladin but I have no illusions about the fact that I don't know you very well but I feel I kind of get what you're saying" she stretched as they walked, pulling herself out of the melancholy. The world needed people like the two of them right now, people with the ability to help and the desire and will to actually do so. Each Hero meant more incidents that could be dealt with, and every one would make a difference in the case of a truly monumental threat.
"A tour sounds great. I could probably use it" Menagerie said, approaching the van with a smile visible in the gap at the bottom of her mask as she was hit by the scent of cooked meat and spices. It seemed Paladin and the chef new each other quite well, which made some sense but it still felt a little juxtapose to see Heroes doing something so normal. Nodding to the man she said "I'm Menagerie, pleased to meet you" her brain seemed to pause for a moment at the free food. Somehow it was that and not the battle that got her brain to finally internalize that she was a Hero now. Then retaining her smile she responded "Greatly appreciated" Menagerie turned back to her partner "Close might be overstating it, but I'm within a few miles. Absolutely tiny place but rent isn't too horrible and the utilities are pretty reliable compared to a lot of the places I've stayed. Though I can see why people would feel safer. I'm not used to living in a city where metas are such an integral part of the local worldview"

Menagerie had never been in a fight with other Metahumans before and it was very different than she would have assumed; even though she fought through her skeletons and not directly it still was exhausting, so much so that for a moment the explosion striker had slipped her mind. A wave of emotions hit her with the force of a sledgehammer, so mixed together it would be difficult to name what she was feeling but it wasn't especially pleasant.
Still, she and Paladin had won the fight and most likely prevented there being a great deal more damage, so there was something at least. However Menagerie kept remembering how it had been to be frightened by her powers, and hers were merely disquieting to most people and not so inherently destructive. She could certainly get what it was like to have a power that just seemed villainous, but she wouldn't kid herself into thinking she understood the situation entirely. "It should help at any rate, I'm not an expert in the legal system but I plan on doing what I can to help the situation. I mean.. helping people, that's really the whole point isn't it?" she let out a long deep breath. Standing around doing nothing wasn't going to be any good for her or anyone else right now. "Yeah I'm definitely hungry so that sounds great to me. Glad to have somebody who knows the area since I have no clue where anything is unless it's within three blocks of where I live" she gave Paladin a weak smile, following her down the road and leaving the ruins behind.
