Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | "No, I didn't think so. I'd have thought you'd have been able to attract some more impressive metahumans than those you have."
Jack drops this piece of information carelessly, as if it is worth nothing. In truth, it really isn't. That gangs and criminal organisations have been recruiting metahumans is common knowledge. Though several new metahumans seem determined to set themselves up as gangland kings, most of them have been promptly squashed by the hired muscle of more experienced criminals. For the most part anyway. The criminal underground has been surprisingly stable in San Francisco for example. Though many make their way to the west coast to challenge Paladin for the title of strongest metahuman in America, they are promptly squashed, and the rest of the underworld remains relatively unchanged thanks to the presence of the Spades.
They cock their head in curiosity at Oliver's comment. Does Oliver know of particular examples of these mistakes? "You seem a very practical man, that's true, but is there not a certain kind of arrogance that displays?"
Jack themselves has come to meeting alone too, but they set it up, and they were more than aware of their own failings to know that they were arrogant. Though of course they thought of it as confidence. Jack has researched Oliver Halle, researched this restaurant and the area around it.
"I'm sure cleverer men than you still value a little extra protection? Especially considering that you are away from your powerbase right now?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | "Of course."
The thumb stick is a rather standard one, something that can be bought in any technology store for a few dollars. It looks new, and it is, for Jack had purchased it only a few hours ago before loading it with the data that Halle would need. The item in question was rare, practically unique, and required for Jack's current obsession. Normally they would have found another way, sent Punk or Anna, but as it was they needed it, and they needed it before the end of the obsession. What might have taken an accountant years to unravel, they had unpicked in only one sleepless day.
"Nobody." The capital letter can be heard in Jack's intonation. "You can call me Nobody."
It was the handle they had taken to using online, a simple word that the online community knew them by, those that were intelligent enough to unravel the tangled web they had surrounded themselves with. Jack might be the most intelligent being on the planet, but even they could not completely erase their existence from the all encompassing reach of the internet. They also took advantage of the services of those individuals themselves, in much the same way that they were now taking advantage of Mr Halle.
"It suits me, cause that's all I am, just a Nobody. I doubt you managed to find much, if any information on me before coming me. That's probably for the best, I have quite an... Unpleasant family."
It's not a threat, more a statement, and the tone and expression on Jack's face makes it clear that the words are meant wholeheartedly. They don't have anything even resembling a healthy relationship with their father, mother or elder brother. That their sister is exempted from that particular toxic circle is testament only to Jack's tolerance for her over the others. They have done their best to distance themselves from their influence, but even leaving the country would not indemnify them forever.
"I must confess I am impressed that you arrived alone, most people like you usually have a goon or three in tow. No one worthy of protecting you?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack rolls their eyes, "Well thank God I'm still a minor then. One grey hair and you'd have left me for dead right?"
That was another piece of the puzzle, there were lots of types of people that would step in to help someone in need, but far less that would only do so if they perceived the one in danger to be a child. They file the extra piece of information for later study, adding it to the growing pile of tidbits and hints they had about this newcomer.
The next question almost makes them throw away the entire pile. The woman is asking about Paladin. The biggest Hero in America, and one of the most recognisable faces and icons on the planet. Jack can actually see an advert featuring the Hero from here, plastered across the side of a bus that has stopped opposite the small cafe. They've had no personal run ins with the Hero themselves, but Punk has, and they know from her accounts that she is no small threat.
Only two options are available here. Either Raven is a rabid fangirl who wants to talk Jack's ear off about the blue-haired Hero. Or she's here to test her strength against her. There is a third possible option that they just live under a rock, but that seems unlikely so Jack discards it offhand.
"I know about as much as anyone else..." Technically true, as there are some other individuals that have managed to track down the identities of most of the Hero Program. Namely the Program themselves. "She's super popular, biggest Hero in America, and some people say she's the strongest Meta on the planet. I don't think so... But still... That's what people say..."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack raises an unimpressed eyebrow. "I'm a teenager with a smartphone in 2020. I know the sort of stuff you're talking about, I don't think any teenager alive today has an innocent mind." They shrug, taking a sip of the scalding hot coffee. They don't produce the phone in question as it is decidedly not what one would expect to be in the hands of the average teenager. It's larger than normal, for a start, and has several wires hanging from it's open casing. It looks distinctly more dangerous than anything anyone should be carrying around in their pocket. Nonetheless, Jack's pocket is where it stays.
They spear another segment of cake into their mouth. It is good, heavily iced with fudge icing and moist as well, clearly freshly baked for the day. Another reason why they frequent this coffee shop. Besides, the staff here know them, and leave them to their own devices for the most part, which Jack values.
"So what actually brought you here to San Francisco of all places? They frown on vigilantes and there aren't many that can think about tackling Paladin when she comes down on them."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | "I'm going to address option two first. You think that suit isn't stab-proof? I'm insulted. Also, you're a vigilante and you haven't had a tetanus vaccine?"
Jack's sarcastic voice sounds like they are in the helmet with Punk, far outstripping the meagre efforts of even the world's best audio companies. There is the sound of a keyboard clicking, though it is clear from Jack's following words that they aren't actually paying all that much attention to what Punk is doing, the keyboard continues regardless.
"As to option one... Pretty sure you've got a bulletproof woman landing on the roof next to you right... About... Now..."
Punk might not be able to see Jack's face, but she almost definitely could see the smirk plastered across it.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | "Call it advertising Mr Halle."
The man reminds Jack of their brother, they have those same thin lips, that same deliberate method of communicating. Slow, measured, without anger. Yet about this man was an aura of threat. It wasn't quite obvious, but there was a sensation that crossing him would leave you regretting the action. Or rather, leave you incapable of doing so. It was the same kind of menacing air possessed by certain predators, like Siberian tigers or great white sharks.
As they so often had with their brother, Jack ignored the aura. They already knew exactly what this man was capable of. There was little enough evidence of it, but for someone with Jack's resources and intuition the malpractice, misdemeanours and murders were clear as day. Even if they can only prove a fraction of it. "You have some very, very good accountants, and even better lawyers, clearly you are a man to be taken seriously. And a man who can afford the kind of lawyers you can doesn't need any more money."
The coke and the bottle of wine arrives, being set down carefully by the waiter. They pour a small measure of the wine into the glass, then stand back to allow Oliver to taste it. Once dismissed the waiter gives a small nod and disappears with a promise to return in a few minutes for their food order.
Jack flips over the thick, embossed sheet of paper that forms the restaurants menu. The selection of dishes is tiny, each more expensive than the last. They peruse it absentmindedly, having already memorised it and chosen their meal long before arriving at the restaurant themselves. Eventually they set the menu down. "I'm a spoiled rich kid Mr Halle, I was raised a spoiled rich kid and I've stayed one since I left home. Spoiled rich kids get what they want Mr Halle. There is something I want, and I think you are the person to get it for me."
They push a USB drive across the table, "In return you can have access to my rather considerable, if I do say so myself, information gathering skills for a period or amount to be negotiated. Something a lot more valuable than any suitcase of cash. Although I can get you one of those too if you'd prefer."
They lean back, kicking one foot up onto the chair at the side of the table, and slurp noisily at the ice cold coke.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack could acquire most things. Funds were rarely an issue and there was very little that could not be acquired through the expenditure of untraceable cash. When that wasn't enough occasionally wheels could be greased through the application of illicitly acquired information. When you had little regard for privacy laws, at least in how they applied to you, then the world was your oyster. Especially in the day and age of smart phones and social media. It was remarkable how lax people were with their security. They'd experienced a brief flash of challenge in unravelling this latest piece of security and finance. It had been a tangled web, a mess of shell corporations and dummy companies that funnelled money from one business into another. To anyone without a degree in accountancy and several months alone with both sets of books, it would have been impossible to untangle. That said, Jack rarely factored into people's expectations. The eighteen-year-old rubbed their eyes, their face blue in the light cast only by the many monitors before them. They hadn't slept, again. Dark circles hovered beneath their eyes and their hair was greasy and unwashed as they pushed it back and away from their vision. An image stared at them from another monitor. A tall man, lean, with slicked back hair and cold blue eyes. They weren't all that dissimilar to the blue eyes that regarded the image dispassionately for a moment. Abruptly Jack stood, pushing the chair back from the desk. They walked away from the computers, leaving them running as they flicked several switches to bring proper illumination to the room. Their workshop was a mess, still not tidied up from their last Obsession. The device sat, humming, on a worktable in the centre of the large space. The rest of the room was littered with other half-finished Obsessions. They seemed to leave more projects unfinished than complete. They tapped the device thoughtfully. Perhaps this was one that would have been better left incomplete. There was a buzz, and they snatched up the strange bundle of wires, circuit boards and screens that passed for their phone. It was constantly being upgraded, tinkered with and adapted. Anyone who saw it would swear that it was a slightly different device every time it appeared. There were just two words in the message from Anna. She could be talkative, but not over the airwaves. Package deliveredJack smiled, their teeth startlingly white against their oily face. This might actually be a little exciting after all.
3 DAYS LATER
It didn't do to keep blackmailed mob bosses waiting too long. Jack would like to say they'd learned that the hard way, but they didn't really do anything the hard way. Others might disagree with that view, but there is a certain kind of arrogance that derives from being the smartest person in the room. Jack was the smartest person in every room. It didn't help that they'd been raised to view others as beneath them too, much as they railed against their birth right, they had become the sort of child their father had always wanted. They were dressed a little more smartly today, the shirt had even been ironed, though not by Jack. It hung awkwardly off their gangly frame, tucked in at the front but hanging loose at the back, either by accident or design. Probably accident considering that the laces of their shoes had been only half-heartedly tucked in shoes, rather than tied. The maître d' had looked askance at them when they'd entered the exclusive restaurant. That look had melted away to be replaced with effusive politeness when Jack had dropped the American Express Centurion credit card on his desk. It wasn't Jack's name on the card, but the maître d' wasn't to know that. Jack folded a hundred-dollar bill into the head waiter's top pocket. "I'm expecting a guest. Blue eyes, dark hair, nice suit. A quiet table please."The table in question was mostly out of sight, and clearly out of earshot, in a spot that by some quirk of architecture sounded like the restaurant was empty. Jack folded another hundred into the man's pocket, "Wine, something expensive, one glass."They sat down, "I'll have a coke."The man, still effusive, nodded and left. The sommelier had plenty of wine. They'd have to send out for the coke. | © seadra of gs |

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | CBE appeared to have become entirely immune to the effects of physics. Gravity, friction, all of it seemed to just pass her by, clearly her body was even responding differently to light. Metahuman abilities often broke or circumvented the laws of physics, but rarely so many all at once. As before she slowly seems to come to terms with her new ability. Clearly there is something instinctive about the way she masters the new powers she develops.
Jack jumped, surprised by the sudden burst of ice that covered the chair leg. Something about the multiple abilities was clearly interfering with how much control CBE had over them. Perhaps the energies contrasted and interacted in unusual ways, or perhaps her own ability certainly didn't allow her to control them with great precision when she possessed more than one. It was unfortunate that mimics were almost unheard of, even post-Event. Having another with a differing power to compare CBE's to would certainly have made this process easier.
"The power is gone? Or you've simply lost the ability to control it now?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack shrugged, "A hunch. You get a feel for when people have been down that way."
It had been a blind guess in truth, but they weren't about to admit that to the woman. Not having background information on her made them uncomfortable. They rarely came into this kind of contact with individuals they didn't know about. It left them on edge.
They had noted the flask, and the apparently unconscious swig Raven took from it. It had to be alcohol. The moment was too swift for them to be able to smell anything, but that sort of behaviour surely indicated some sort of addiction. It could just be the stereotype associated with flasks, but it seemed to make sense.
They sipped at the hot coffee, before carefully cutting a sliver from the cake with a fork and spearing it into their mouth. It was good, as it always was. Jack wouldn't bother coming back if it wasn't. "I prefer my coffee as just that. There's something about a pure dose of caffeine…"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | It took only a matter of minutes for the coffee to be prepared, Jack noting Raven's continued attention to a pocket that contained a bulky rectangular object. It was too bulky to be a phone. A wallet? A flask?
A lack of money would make her easy to manipulate. An addiction? Easier still. This woman was clearly a meta, though just how potent remained to be seen. They already had two dangerous women in their employ, though one was considerably more dangerous than the other. Still, it could never hurt to add another to the roster, so to speak.
Collecting the steaming cup of coffee, and the small plate bearing their cake, they took the items to an unoccupied table at the back of the room. It was a little away from the shops other patrons, and the music playing in the background was quiet enough to allow conversation, but loud enough to discourage eavesdropping.
"I come here a lot. I like my coffee."
Jack nodded at the espresso that Raven had ordered. "I appreciate that you do too. I'm always faintly suspicious of someone who doesn't drink coffee."
Not that they weren't faintly suspicious of Raven. After all, they knew almost nothing about her and had thus far had managed to dig very little information out of her. "So why San Francisco? Why not LA? Normally people go there first when on a tour…"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack frowned at Raven's response. "Nobody worth meeting." San Francisco was well known for it's diversity. It's proximity to Silicon Valley meant that the city on the bay was often host to people from all over the world hoping to make their fortunes in the technology industry. Or those that had already done so. Jack knew better than to attempt the same. Though their technology could easily earn them a place as one of the most eccentric geniuses ever to rise in the centre of American technological advancement, much of it could not be replicated. Besides, they had no inclination to share their abilities with the wider world. That much at least they had learned from their father.
They raised an eyebrow at her comment about a flying visit, there seemed to be an amused edge to her tone of voice, though exactly why that statement should amuse her was not immediately clear. Perhaps it would become so when they had the chance to complete some proper research into the unusual meta.
The staff of the coffee shop recognised Jack, though the young barista behind the counter looked surprised to see them accompanied by the older woman. A generous slice of coffee cake had already been cut before the two reached the counter, but the young woman paused before preparing coffee, awaiting what the brunette's order might be.
The coffee shop was tiny, the space dominated by the large counter that line the back of the shop. The furniture was old and looked like it had mostly been rescued from thrift stores, consisting mostly of overstuffed armchairs and low, battered coffee tables. There are only a handful of people in the coffee shop, it's not exactly rush hour. The current patrons are sat with macbooks, steaming, obviously fresh cups of coffee sat beside them.
Jack turned to Raven as they produced a credit card, that had it been further examined, possessed someone else's name. "Whatever you want, it's on me."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack raised an eyebrow at Raven's rejection of cake, ice cream and the like. Not that they cared, she would drink a coffee, and Jack could eat the coffee cake. The place wasn't far, Jack could already see the small sign mounted on the wall above the shop as they walked.
"I live here. I'm not from around here originally though."
Jack was from the other side of the country, a fact that they didn't advertise, but didn't go to great pains to disguise either. Their family would be able to find them easily, making them work harder for it just made it more likely that someone would come looking if they didn't know exactly where they were.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack smiled in amusement as Anna apparently tried to walk forwards, without actually making any progress. They noticed her feet dipping through the floor before she did. Some sort of physical phasing ability. It must be something that could be controlled, otherwise they would never have been able to extract the blood. The strange effect had extended visually. Clearly this strange phasing was also affecting light, not just physical objects.
A wave of cold was rolling off her, the faint frosting in the air making it clear just how cold things were growing about her. They cock their head in interest, "I wonder if the lack of ice growing about you is something to do with your inability to make physical contact."
Looking around, they found what was left of a chair, picking up the broken pieces and carrying them back across the room so they lay on the floor between the two of them. Perhaps more consciously activating the cryokinetic power would allow her to have some effect on the physical world, it was simply a matter of working out which instincts could trigger the different abilities. If they weren't linked anyway. Perhaps this could trigger one ability, thereby overriding the other. It was just a matter of finding the right lever.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack shrugged, there hadn't been a whole lot of awkward brushes that had necessitated this specific device. More they'd chosen to take it out today because it needed testing, on the off chance that they ended up in a bad spot that is. In hindsight that hadn't been the best move, taking an as yet untested and highly unstable device out as protection had clearly not worked so well. They probably would have had it stolen if Raven hadn't shown up in time to save the day. Not that they would be sharing that particular titbit of information.
They gestured with the small device before dropping it back into a pocket. "Not really, I just like being prepared." Clearly Raven was interested in the device, after all it wasn't exactly similar to your average commercial taser. It's appearance was decidedly cobbled together, while it's effect was considerably flashier than anything that could be bought in a store.
Starting to walk down the alleyway back towards normal civilisation, Jack beckoned for Raven to follow them. "Yeah, there's a little place a couple of blocks from here. Does great coffee and they have amazing coffee cake."
Jack pretty much operated on caffeine, as the dark bags beneath their eyes betrayed. That one of their favourite coffee shops was also their primary supplier of coffee cake would be no surprise to someone that knew them well.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack hadn't particularly enjoyed being ganged up on themselves, not that it would have made much difference. Just one of those thugs could have beaten the crap out of them had it not been for Raven's help, especially given the malfunction of their one weapon. Jack was not even slightly physically intimidating. Their gangly limbs looked almost twig-like, and a long flight of stairs would leave them breathing heavily. They hired people for the physical stuff.
People, like Raven. Idly Jack wondered what Raven's upper limit was, they preferred hiring physical meta's for their services. After all, Jack could manage most of the cerebral things themselves, it was rare they ran into a problem that they couldn't deal with.
"Being beaten up on dingy alleyways? Not really, San Francisco isn't that dangerous. Still, I've had a few awkward brushes, but then hasn't everyone?"
It was clear that Jack was implying Raven had gotten herself into more than her fair share of 'awkward brushes'.
