Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Anna's response was as Jack had expected. Definite aspects of the Lady's behaviour had suggested that they were relatively trustworthy, in as much as anyone who took money to perform illegal actions could be trusted. Which was to say about as far as you could throw them. Jack was not very strong. Anna was, but that was beside the point.
She was right though, in Jack's estimations. They doubted that the Lady would make any effort to betray them, and if she did then they would deal with her. They had come to the restaurant with appropriate preparations for a double cross, though they had doubted if she had the resources or the wherewithal to pull something together at such short notice.
"But of course, I wouldn't ask you to assist me if I didn't intend to share what information I already had."
It was a lie of course. Jack had a great deal of information on RISE, probably more than most of the members had, but they had no intention of passing all of that onto Josephine. For one, it would defeat the point of recruiting her, and for the other, she may very well get complacent. No doubt she would work out that Jack had held information back, and would hold back some of her own. Jack would be disappointed if she didn't It would have been so boringly straight forward.
"Of course, if you feel the need, you may withdraw, I respect your right to operate independently, we do live in a free and capitalist society after all."
They resisted the urge to yawn at the threat. Josephine had arrived by themselves, while Jack had a metahuman bodyguard in tow, and most of the current guests of the restaurant in their employ. Not that there was any way at all for the Lady to know that. Jack left her to it, they knew there was a risk here, but there was a risk in everything they did. Not all of what they did was immune from risk, their family rarely tolerated harm to their members, but most did not know of Jack's family. The Lady had clearly been able to make connections. But they would not understand the true significance of Jack's blood connections. Not without having been a member of the Families. It had been to a few people's regret.
"So we have an accord? You will research into, and undertake surveillance of the group we know as RISE? While also providing said information to me. Your payment will be in the form of a number of my designs. I'm sure we can negotiate as to what value we will assign to those designs."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | CBE-177 had lived a life that Jack couldn't even imagine. Soviet Russia was so far removed from modern day America that it defied comprehension, and she had undoubtedly experienced one of the worst aspects of it. Experimentation without ethics certainly had its benefits, although clearly it had reaped no reward in the case of the program that had produced her. Jack had no doubt that she had been a natural metahuman. After all, it had taken the Doctor centuries to crack that mystery and she had power and intellect beyond most mortal comprehension. No secret Soviet lab could have discovered it, no matter their funding or their lack of morals.
They read what she had typed out into the phone, pausing once or twice to make notes on their own phone. Jack might have a formidable mind and a prodigious memory, but they were still fundamentally human, it would be better to make the notes now and avoid asking Anna to repeat anything.
They'd already done a little research on her background, and the detail of distance narrowed things down considerably. There were a number of Soviet laboratories that distance from Moscow, as well as a few much closer, if CBE had been as severely drugged as it seemed then it could have been any of those. Still, it narrowed it down a little, She had been held at a laboratory somewhere in or near Moscow. The Soviet Union had been a big place, it was a relief to only have to search a small fraction of the now defunct world power. The local terrain helped even more, surely there couldn't be that many secret labs near the mountains in Russia?
"Well I can certainly start to track down the Laboratory locations for you, maybe from there we can narrow it down."
They showed no sympathy for the death of the man who had raped her, not that they thought Anna might have expected sympathy. Nor did they show any particular sympathy from the knowledge that she had been outside, naked, in the Russian winter. The Soviet experiment did not seem to be the kind to appreciate sympathy anyway.
"Was he executed because he became your child's father?"
If they could find a record of soldiers executed for rape and where they had been stationed or executed, that two might help to narrow it down.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | If only the technopath had any idea. Jack had spent their entire life around people that were dwarfed by their intellect, as a child they had been capable of maintaining conversations with seasoned academics, and had put most of them to shame before their 13th birthday. Interestingly the rate of Jack's development had seemed only to increase once they hit puberty, and they had a number of theories on whether it would halt or simply slow down once their body finished growing. The attitude of the Families to metahumans like Jack meant there wasn't an awful lot of early documentation on powers similar to theirs. Josephine would at least provide some stimulation before inevitably she too fell by the wayside. It would be nice to have some equal conversation for a change.
"I'm impressed that you have made the connection, from what I can gather they are operating on a cell basis, with only a few people at the top understanding what is truly going on. I only have a rough idea of how they are picking their targets, but if it's what I think it is then it doesn't bode well."
They shrugged, "I rarely operate on this side of the country, it would be more convenient for me to have an ally on the East Coast than to interfere directly in their operations myself. I can't simply fly out here whenever business requires it, and they seem relatively low level for now, so my direct attention may not be needed until they grow more active."
They had been careful to phrase it as an ally. In truth Jack didn't have friends; they didn't really have people they trusted. Anna might be their bodyguard, but they knew that eventually she would turn on them, and they had already laid a number of plans in place.
"Of course I wouldn't expect you to do it for free, although judging by your activities in the stock markets I imagine money isn't all that much of a problem for you. Nonetheless a generous sum will be deposited into the account of your choice. Untraceable of course. Beyond that, I can offer you more than money. I can offer you brief access to my designs."
This likely wouldn't be all that interesting until Josephine looked up some of their previous work. Anything accessible right now would be simplistic in comparison to what Jack was currently capable of manufacturing, but once she saw the dates on those designs she might be interested. It was a pity that nobody had ever discovered the true origin of Cryptolocker. Demonstrating that they had achieved Singularity more than four years ago would surely convince the technopath that the offer was a good one.
They had brought something else just in case she required more convincing, and they now placed a small flash drive on the table. It contained fragments of a design, enough to demonstrate just how far ahead it was, but not enough that it could be built, and without Jack's power, reverse engineering it would be impossible. Even for someone as smart as Josephine.
"Consider this a taste."
They turned briefly to Anna, talking quietly enough that Josephine would not be able to overhear.
"What do you think? Do you trust her?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | "Right, cause metahumans are so easily restrained without a Hero in the mix."
Clearly Punk wasn't entirely convinced that they might have needed help. Jack restrained their annoyance at the woman's arrogance. Which was ironic. They had comprehensive files on all of the Heroes serving in the San Francisco Bay area, one of them could fly, while another could quite literally leap tall buildings in a single bound. Punk might be able to outmanoeuvre Paladin, but they doubted she could outrun a flier. Nonetheless it was clear that there was no point in arguing, and so Jack let the issue drop. They would have to ensure she actually became an asset before they set about turning her into an efficient one.
Jack finally looked back after the bullet had been removed; just in time to see 177 showing one of her many scars to their guest. She had suffered a lot more than Jack or Punk put together ever had. It had turned her into a brutally efficient killing machine, although one who's efficiency was greatly hampered by her almost complete ignorance of the 21st century, which was why Jack need to acquire another resource. They didn't have time to spend with 177 and bring them up to speed, such as the correct procedure for ordering pizza and tipping the delivery boy.
That and Punk would just be such an interesting asset to have anyway.
They rolled their eyes at her question, so dramatic.
"I am Nobody, and this is 177, but you can call us Jack and Anna. You are Punk, part-time vigilante, some-time druggie. Filthy habit by the way."
They walked back towards the table, now that most of the blood was gone and there was no longer a clear view of the inside of her leg they were much more comfortable with this proximity.
"I have an offer for you. You've obviously tried to fight crime where you see it, but let's face it, you aren't very good. You don't have the resources or the knowledge to deal with the more organised groups, and the Heroes have too many rules to really start tearing them a part.
"I'm offering you a partnership, work with us and I can provide you with the information and co-ordination you need to start making a difference, and 177 can actually teach you how to fight beyond simply relying on your powers. You're tough and fast, but some of the metas surfacing are even tougher than you are, you'll need skill to put them down."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack was patient as 177 tapped slowly at the glass screen of the device. There was no need to rush her, and besides, she kept glancing at them ever so often, pausing in their typing to do it. It had been a lot to take in, and Jack had not exactly been sensitive in the way they had convinced 177 to listen to them. When the tired looking woman eventually handed them the phone they took it carefully, glancing at her face before turning their gaze down to the small screen.
Clearly she felt that she owed Jack something, which was true, Jack had put them up in an apartment, provided them with food, drink, medical care and anything else they might need. Jack enjoyed having that power over her, and hated themselves for enjoying it.
"I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of experience in looking for missing children in Soviet Russia, but I do have a lot of experience in finding people who don't want to be found. I'm pretty sure it's a transferrable skill set."
They placed the phone carefully back on the table. "Now I know this is a sensitive subject. And I can stop if you want. But just how much can you remember?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Jack glanced towards Anna to see if she wanted anything, after it became clear that the woman was either not hungry or not willing to eat while her charge was potentially in danger they turned back and dismissed the waiter. The cross was still on the table, resting beside Jack's hand, and while no doubt Josephine could interface with it without contact, it still gave them a little power in this moment.
"I would say it's an age thing, but my sister is just like you as well, and she was long before she was able to drink."
Clearly she wasn't much for patience, and once again Jack noted that information down for later. It could perhaps become an issue further down the line, after all, Jack was more interested in having her as an asset than an enemy. It seemed that her mind was processing much the same idea, as she spoke next. Not that she pretended to sound apologetic or anything. It was making the game far less fun, though it was probably for the best.
Jack looked briefly towards Anna, then back at Josephine with a faint smile on their face, "she's never been much for planning, and I doubt it would require all that much anyway. She's what I would call a scary lady. Besides, tearing you limb from limb would really put a crimp in the day. She's never visited New York before.
"As to why I'm here, really, I don't get out much, and I took the chance when it presented itself, plus," they leaned forward, "It's refreshing to meet someone at least close to my level, as I'm sure you can guess, it doesn't happen very often."
They traced their spindly fingers around the glass idly, "Have you heard of RISE?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Jack smiled faintly at the woman's reaction to their brief question. So the necklace had monetary, sentimental, or utilitarian value. The information was filed away for later review, though it was about to be of use once more.
"Do it, wouldn't take me long to manufacture a new one. Although I would consider it a favour if you refrain from doing so, it's five minutes out of my day I could use for something much more entertaining."
They didn't doubt that she could follow through on her threat. Her hacking prowess was well known on the dark web, and a number of different hacks had been attributed to her. The comment on Jack's parents was not entirely unexpected, but it was surprising that she had done so without looking at a device. Perhaps the necklace housed some kind of WiFi connection. They felt their urge to investigate its innards increase. Presumably that was the reason for her sitting and staring at him for a solid nine seconds. Her power, if it was to interface with the internet, was potent, but she really should learn to hide the tells.
Presumably she had been using the time to check the various documents on Jack and Nobody that she could find. Jack could only assume that time included checking on Anna as well. No doubt Josephine would dismiss those out of hand, which left Jack feeling somewhat underappreciated. After all, everything that the American Government held on Anna, from her State ID card, to her Birth Certificate, to her Social Security Number was technically genuine. It had been difficult when Jack had originally hacked their way into those systems, but it was easy enough now to produce identities that were one hundred percent real, albeit with the minor flaw of containing entirely false information.
The reference to their brother however, caught them off guard. Their face was unguarded for a fraction of a second, the emotions that flashed across it too quick and too complex to catch. Their brother was a sore spot.
Josie smirked, and Jack suppressed the ire at her apparent belief that she had the upper hand. If she was indeed as potent a technopath as she appeared then no doubt she could outhack Jack over the short term. Nonetheless her threats did not worry the young genius. They were always such a crude way of dealing with business. They sighed dramatically, raising a hand to beckon the watchful waiter over.
"You are just no fun at all."
The waiter arrived before Josie could respond.
"Yes, the Seafood Tower please. Do you want anything?"
This question was offhandedly offered to Josie, as though Jack had only just remembered their presence.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Jack quirked an eyebrow at the incorrect mythological reference. "You are aware that Odysseus was the one that went by the name Nobody, and Polyphemus his victim?"
Jack shrugged, "I hadn't been to New York in a while, and this kind of activity is all so deliciously cloak and dagger. Much more fun than talking anonymously on some encrypted chatroom."
It might concern some people to find out that fun was such a regular motivator in Jack's activities. They were perhaps the most intelligent person on the planet, and certainly capable of running things far more efficiently than they did. That said, where would the fun be in that? Jack was 17, and while they were more mature than most people their age, they intended to enjoy being young and immature for as long as they reasonably could. Then a good deal of time after that.
They glanced down at their scrawny form after the bodyguard comment, then back up with a faint grin. "I'm fairly sure you could, hence the bodyguard. I'm not one for physical confrontation, which is why she is here."
Almost on cue, 177 snatched the necklace from about the Lady's neck. They held out their hand as the small woman presented the jewellery to them, taking it and inspecting it carefully. It really was quite ingenious, some kind of transmitter, possibly Bluetooth but more likely WiFi considering the more ubiquitous use of such a signal. They placed it carefully on the table before them, resisting the urge to crack it open and inspect the insides. They doubted very much whether the device contained anything else within, it was far too small.
Unless the Lady was capable of developments far beyond the scope of human invention like Jack was. Fortunately they confirmed that was not the case themselves a moment later. A technopath of some description then. Jack made a mental note never to introduce them to Erys, surely that wouldn't be a good combination.
"I'm sure it's not, but Anna here would not be very good at her job if she just let you make use of it as freely as you are clearly used to."
They reached over and picked up the salt shaker in the middle of the table, raising it above the small device, ready to bring it down and smash it to pieces.
"You don't mind if I..?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Jack rarely bothered with actually hacking the stock market, they much preferred to simply manipulate it as any stockbroker might, albeit on a much grander scale and with much less risk. It had seemed appropriate for this situation however. After all, things needed to be precise, and simply manipulating the stock market could not be as precise as necessary. People were so infuriatingly inefficient when responding to such drops.
They were currently sat in a rather expensive restaurant. Jack was not a snob, but they had noted the preference that their current interest had in the place, and so it had seemed appropriate for a meeting. They were relatively out of place. For one, they were underdressed compared to the rest of the patrons. Though there were some here in jeans, there was no one else in a t-shirt, a t-shirt with a large childish slogan emblazoned on it no less. The Maître d' had looked ready to suggest they go elsewhere, when Jack had dropped a not insignificant roll of bills onto their lectern.
The bills had disappeared as quickly as the man's complaints, and they had been shown to a table with an excellent view of the door. Jack had ordered a glass of spring water, and allowed Anna to order for herself. It had seemed sensible to bring the woman with them, though they weren't expecting any violence it would have been foolish not to come prepared.
They spotted 'The Lady' as she entered. She wasn't particularly distinctive, but then no metahuman was. They were hoping that her mind might be another matter however. They waved them over. Smiling as they greeted their guest.
"It's nice to meet you Lady, I'm Nobody."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack raised an eyebrow. "I heard on the scanner, did you think them finding out you were metahuman was going to make them play nice? You're lucky they didn't call in a Hero."
It wasn't that the cops had never chased her that hard; it was that they had never been so well directed and informed. Since the Event Police Officers had already had a number of unfortunate run ins with metas. After all, there was little they could do to deal with some metahumans, and were much more likely to shoot first once someone demonstrated those abilities. It was probably a cause of many needless deaths.
Jack snorted at the comparison between 177, the diminutive Soviet Super Soldier, and the star of a Victorian styled fantasy film. Clearly whatever she was writing, Punk didn't like. Not that they had much choice, after all, the bullet had to come out soon. It would have been interesting to see 177 simply subdue the other woman, but Jack knew that was unlikely to be necessary.
They hadn't moved from their position, although they looked away from the leg as 177 began to deal with her injury. Hopefully it wouldn't take long, Jack had no taste for blood, and they didn't particularly want it all over their kitchen table.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Clearly they had hit a nerve as Anna reacted to the accusation of cowardice. It was a pity really that she was unable to talk, it made it that much harder to predict her reactions, to understand what exactly was going through her head. Without tone of voice it was that much more difficult to decide on a course of action regarding her.
The words that she had typed were uncompromising however. She was pissed.
They cocked an eyebrow, "It's nothing to do with rights. I have no real power to compel you to do this. I'm your employer, not your owner."
Jack gestured around at the apartment, "This is part payment. I'm not going to take it away. I don't in all honesty care whether you live here or not. The money doesn't matter. Money has never mattered."
They were unconsciously echoing their father in that phrase. It was something that he would often say. Money has never mattered Jack, remember that.
It was easy to say that as someone for whom money was an afterthought, something they had vast reserves of. Still, to Jack, it was true, money didn't matter, it had ceased to hold any real value to them a long time ago. They played the stock market for entertainment, not profit.
They shrugged and leaned back against the counter, "It's not an order. I'm not so unaware as to pretend that I'm nothing like my father. He was very good at giving orders, but I'm not one of those people that controlled you in Russia, you can say no to me. I wouldn't be happy about it, but what, really, am I going to do? If you wanted you could rip me limb from limb."
They carefully watched the small woman, just in case she did try to dismember them. "But that doesn't change the fact that I think you should do this, and that I think not to would simply be selfish. I leave it with you."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack didn't miss the sorrow on Anna's face. It might have only been there for a fraction of a second, short enough for an observer to wonder if it had been there at all, but Jack had seen it. It had been more emotion than they had ever seen upon the woman's face, more emotion than they had thought her capable of expressing.
It seemed the Soviet Superweapon did have a heart after all. It was wonderfully ironic that similar things were going through their heads, though Jack would absolutely have accepted the observation regarding their normal habits. They were surprised to have the phone taken from their hand without much warning, but did not say anything, waiting instead for Anna to type out another response.
The response was not entirely a surprise considering the ferocity of the emotion that had been splashed across her face only a moment ago.
"You can't know that. Anything could have happened to that child. They may have been preserved. They may have survived, they may have developed a power even more potent than your own abilities."
Jack was not close with their family, except perhaps their sister. Their brother had been sadistic and cruel, their mother cold and uncaring, and their father manipulative and eternally disappointed. Jack's sister was hardly the ideal sibling, but they were a good deal closer to normal than the rest of them had been. At the end of it all, it had been somewhere to belong, however unwanted they had felt there.
Anna couldn't understand that.
"You owe it to them. They will have grown up without a mother, and certainly without a father, and now that you have a chance to give them a family you are too scared that you might get hurt."
They put the cup carefully down on the surface. "I didn't take you for a coward."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | It took altogether too long for Anna to respond, or at least begin to respond, she had to type things out before she could properly respond to anything. Then Jack revised their expectations, after all, the question they had asked could be considered personal, and normal people, which meant anyone but Jack, might have needed a moment to deal with the approach they had taken. Nonetheless, Jack took the response with a pinch of salt. Anna seemed to have been honest with them thus far, but Jack had very little in the way of ability to ascertain whether the information they had handed over was the truth or not. If they were indeed some sort of secret Soviet Soldier they could only imagine part of her training had included how to lie.
At least, that's what they thought at first, and then before long the quiet tapping intensified, her fingers flying across the virtual keys at speeds that might have rivalled Jack's. It was like watching someone spilling their soul, albeit without saying an actual word. It was a very strange experience.
They took the proffered mobile phone, inspecting the text that had been etched out onto the screen in simple black and white font. They hadn't quite expected what they read, and the surprise, shock and after a moment anger showed on their face. Jack might not be one predisposed to caring for others, but they did not have a heart of stone.
They were mostly focused on themselves, and most of their actions would be in their own self-interest, or to be more accurate, their actions worked for whatever might be most interesting at that moment in time. Here, they felt a degree of responsibility. Anna was, to an extent, in their care. She might be employed as a bodyguard, but up until this point there had been little actual employment for her. Really what Anna had been was an expense.
Still, she was an interesting diversion.
"Well then, I suppose that gives us something to do."
They paused here, uncharacteristically respectful.
"We can find out what happened?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack had to fight from keeping their lip from curling at her offer to get them something. It was not phrased too subserviently, but judging by what Jack knew of Anna the tone likely was intended as such. Jack didn't like the idea of having servants, they'd grown up with servants, and their father had been accustomed to instant obedience from them. As a result Jack did their best to avoid such suggestions in their own life. They would be unhappy to discover that they were mostly unsuccessful in displaying such an attitude.
"Thank you, but no, I might employ you for various tasks, but it's not your job to get me a drink."
They stood by the counter awkwardly; obviously Anna was not going to broach the subject of the surprise that had occurred during the examination. Unless to her it hadn't been as much of a surprise as the doctor's notes had contrive to indicate. As if to make their independence and capability clear, they nodded towards the sink.
"Mind if I get a water?"
When she showed no sign of having an issue with the request, not that she would, Jack crossed to the kitchen sink and, taking a glass from the cupboard, filled it. They turned back, and without hesitation asked, "So you were pregnant?"
The rest of the unspoken question was left clearly hanging in the air.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | The flat was small, but comfortable. Two bedrooms and an open plan kitchen/lounge area. Not enough to be called luxurious, but at least enough space to live. Jack was currently paying the rent on behalf of 177, or Anna as she seemed to prefer going as now. They didn't mind, it was up to her what she was called, Jack couldn't care less, and had made sure to make up a number of different IDs with the name and a false date and state of birth. They weren't fake IDs per say, they had come from the DMV, just all of the information on them was false.
They had come around without calling ahead, and let themselves in with the key they'd had cut. They reasoned that she would have had some time to come to terms with the information she had received during her medical exam. Jack should not have that information themselves, but since they had installed the bug in the MNRU it had been child's play to get into the system and access what was supposed to be confidential information.
Jack had what could be called a rather loose approach to privacy. If you couldn't protect it yourself then it was your own fault if someone else ended up looking at it. As long as that someone else was Jack. You couldn't trust just anyone with that kind of sensitive data.
As a result of their less than respectful approach Jack knew that Anna had once been pregnant, judging by the rest of the notes she had not actually been aware of the pregnancy, so what could have happened to the child was currently a mystery. Jack was a sucker for mysteries.
They'd given her a few days before deciding to make a house visit. It would be overly generous to call Jack a compassionate person, but people were not efficient when they were emotional, and Jack had little enough patience for people as it was.
They knocked on the breakfast counter as they entered the lounge, though no doubt Anna was aware of their presence. Their abilities seemed to include enhanced sense in the package. They shuddered at the thought. It all just seemed so… unclean.
"So… Did it go well?"
