Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack winced as Lukas took their arm, the pain was excruciating and it was taking all of their willpower not to cry out. Then when Lukas ran his fingers up the side of their arm they snapped.
”What the f&*k are you doing?”
They weren’t particularly impressed by Lukas’ handing off of responsibility. ”So you thought breaking my arm was the right approach? Glad to see all of our Police Officers are such fine upstanding citizens who won’t hesitate to assault a minor if they piss them off.”
The suggestion of waiting for a doctor to check the arm was laughable. Jack knew what a broken arm was like, and they said as much. It was clear what had happened, Lukas had used his ability, perhaps not intentionally, but he had used it nonetheless. Perhaps it was linked to emotions? Anger causing him to push injuries onto others and sympathy to take it back? If that was the case then Jack wasn’t sure if Lukas would be healing the arm any time soon.
”I think you need to learn to control that power pretty quick.”
On the other hand, now they had the perfect barrel to hang Lukas over in the future. There were cameras everywhere in the MNRU, and one of them would have caught what had just happened. It may not be something they use now, but it would be useful for the future if they ever needed something from Lukas.
”Yeah sure the doctor can help. Dumbass.”
They struggled into the sling that was held out to them. They’d need to get the arm put in a cast. But that could wait, technically they weren’t even supposed to be here. Not that it had been hard to get in.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | The kid smirked as Lukas put his hand on their arm. ”Take this outside? What are you going to do? Beat up a 17 year old kid? Big man aren’t you?”
Jack did not expect the sudden searing pain that radiated through their arm from Lukas’ fingers. They didn’t enjoy pain, and usually made efforts to avoid it, but obviously they had pushed the cop too far and he had lost his temper. They managed to restrain themselves from crying out, bringing a hand up to support the injured limb. Which was a great deal more injured than they had expected.
Not only was the pain greater than it should have been from Lukas’s touch, but the injury that appeared to have been inflicted was in the wrong place. It was their forearm. Lukas must have used his ability. Had it been deliberate? A quick glance at the amazed and celebrating Lukas suggested not.
They didn’t have any pain killers, and for them the injury was still relatively fresh, not dulled to the background as it would be after some time. Even so, they kept the pain out of their voice.
”That’s a neat trick. Now are you gonna take it back or what?”

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack couldn't help but smile at Luke's response, at the threat. It probably wasn't the best response, after all, it wasn't as if they were physically capable enough to defend themselves. Nor were they particularly enamoured of pain. Not that those misgivings had ever stopped them from pushing buttons. Normally they had more protection, but 177 wasn't here. That didn't take away the arrogance. They were confident Lukas wouldn't seriously hurt them.
"No one likes getting hurt."
They paused for a moment, mulling it over, "Well that's not true, there are definitely people who enjoy a little pain. Not that I count myself amongst their number."
It was odd the way they talked, far more educated and cerebral than was to be expected from someone clearly young enough to be in high school. Jack was a good liar, but they rarely bothered to extend their lies to concealing who they were. Nobody ever really understood their true nature anyway, no matter how honest or dishonest they might have been.
"Interesting that a cop was trying to save a kids life. What happened? You shoot him?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack almost laughed at Lukas’ response, they didn’t have the greatest opinion of the US Police force, and by extension, the academy that trained them. It didn’t help that Jack had read the documentation given to wannabe Police Officers and it was laughably lacking. Not that such poor provision was unusual in Police training. Still it was better than no training at all.
Jack might have been offended, if they hadn’t felt like they were playing twenty questions themselves. They rolled their eyes. ”I’m having a conversation, last I checked, you asked me questions too, I’ve just been more honest than you have.”
They stood up and moved a little away from the cop. ”That’s what we normal people do. Ask each other questions, take turns, just cause you don’t get to be the one asking all the questions it doesn’t mean you’re being interrogated. Jeez.”
They shrugged, ”Sucks that your power hurts you though,” they said insincerely.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack raised an eyebrow at Luke's request, but at least they were finally getting somewhere. They moved from the window back towards Lukas, coming closer and leaning against a chair, but not sitting down. They gave Lukas a pointedly defiant look then almost rolled their eyes shortly after he began. Either the guy was an idiot, or he had serious denial issues. The MNRU was an expensive and very much exclusive medical facility. If they weren't at least sure you were a metahuman, you wouldn't get an invite, let alone get in through the door. Jack could tell that Lukas was a metahuman just from reading the reports that had been sent in regarding it.
They had hoped for some more understanding about Lukas' ability, but it was clear that they weren't going to get much in the way of answers. It was strange though Lukas could remove injuries from others apparently at will, but always with the unfortunate side effect that he conferred them on himself. Somehow that same injury hadn't killed him either. Presumably some part of their ability inured their body against death, or at least death caused through the use of their own ability. Perhaps some aspect of enhanced tissue regeneration that was potent enough to prevent life-threatening injuries, but not potent enough to notably increase the rate of healing, at least not enough the Lukas had noticed it.
"I'm pretty sure if you're here you're a meta, that's just kind of how this place works."
They leaned forward, "Why are you in so much denial over it? The only explanation for what happened is that you're a metahuman. Do have a problem with metahumans?"
They were deliberately antagonising Lukas now. Maybe part of his power was linked to emotions, perhaps if they could accelerate the healing in others they could accelerate their own, and so many metahuman abilities were linked to emotions in some way, it's why they often manifested during puberty.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack almost rolled their eyes. This Lukas Pope was definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer. On the other hand Jack had never seen the inside of the drawer, so they might have a slightly skewed perception. He was hardly the first person Jack had met who had received their powers thanks to the Event, but he was certainly the densest. It was taking all of their patience not to simply call up 177 and have her beat the answers out of him. Jack didn't have much taste for torture, but they were sure the iced Soviet super-weapon had a few interesting red interrogation techniques up her, admittedly short, sleeves.
"I should hope I know a lot about what's going on here, I've spent way too much time here already."
True
"Why else? I'm curious. World changes overnight and what? You just want to hide under a rock? Come on man, where's your curiousity? You must work in a bank or something."
They stood up and paced, feeling restless at how unsuccessfully this was going. "When I saw you watching the door and out the way of the window I thought you might be a cop or something. But no way do I think that now."
They stopped and looked Lukas dead in the eyes. "Why are you here?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack could spot the lie. It might not have been an intentional one, but a lie it was nonetheless. Jack had read the reports that had been sent to the insurance company. Anything that was recorded digitally was easy enough to access, short of government documents. And even those were not beyond the reach of their slender fingers. Still, they had hoped that Lukas would be able to offer them some new insight, something that hadn't been mentioned in the information that had been sent to his insurance.
They nodded as if Lukas had at least answered part of their question, even if he had in fact done exactly the opposite. They hadn't quite expected the next question, but then it made sense. They had suggested that they might be a patient here, it was natural that Lukas would ask about the doctor's and other members of staff that operated within the walls of the MNRU.
"Dr Newton? Tall guy, grey hair, got a limp."
Jack shrugged, "He's not my doctor but he seems a bit of a dick. Good though. If you know what I mean?"
They cocked their head, running their fingers idly along the side of the chair, then they looked suddenly at Lukas. "Why? You worried about what the doc might say to you?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | So straight into the questions, and no explanation as to the event that had actually brought him here. Jack had their sources of course, but that didn't mean that they didn't want to hear it from the mouth of someone who had been there. It must be strange for Lukas now. There were metahumans in the Police Force, but the more powerful ones tended to move into Hero work, it was an ideal recruiting ground for the federal program. Of course that left some resentment, many Police officers were fine with Heroes, they were just like SWAT, but with powers. Many others resented them, feeling like they were being pushed out, or told they weren't good enough. Of course, no police officer could ever hope to compete with a powerful metahuman.
"Yeah I'm metahuman, my power's a bit weird though. I can build stuff basically."
A vast oversimplification of Jack's ability, but true enough. Then there was the aspect of Jack's power that had enhanced their intelligence. In truth they no longer thought of that as an ability. It was so much a part of them now that they couldn't envisage it as something separate. Or perhaps they didn't want to think of it as something separate. Maybe they'd just have to be more blunt.
"So what do you do? Your power I mean? Or what do they think you do?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack had adapted to the left handed shake with nary a skip in their step. It had been obvious that the man would be unable to shake with his right, and he had held out his left. It had seemed simple to Jack to accommodate Lukas' injury. Perhaps that had been something of a giveaway of Jack's true nature, a slip that their father would have spotted in a heartbeat. Never let them see who you really are Jack.
Jack shrugged at Lukas' response, crossing to the window to look out. It was a surprisingly pleasant view for a government funded building. Although there were some other revenue streams coming into the MNRU it was primarily a federally funded institution. "Yeah, they get pretty busy, maybe someone else is kicking off in another wing. It happens sometimes. People don't like suddenly finding out that they're different from everybody else. I speak from experience."
The question was fair, and Jack didn't explicitly want to lie, so they fudged the truth. They were exceedingly good at fudging the truth. "I don't think of myself as a patient." True, while once again suggesting that they were one.
The sat themselves, stretching out their long legs in a pose of languid relaxation. "So what did you do to get sent here?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack smiled, then wandered in and glanced around the room, looking casually to see if there were any cameras in the room. Not that it mattered; wiping themselves from the feed had been child's play, almost depressingly so. It was probably why they focused on metahumans so much in their recent researches. Things that followed the normal laws of science were just so depressingly predictable. Metahuman abilities however, seemed to follow strange laws of their own, laws that Jack would dearly love to codify.
Lukas Pope was sat down in the corner, in a chair that faced the door and kept him out of sight of the window. If Jack hadn't known that he was a cop then they would have guessed it simply from this action. It was telling.
Finally they paid attention to the man, looking at his hand almost curiously and weighing up the risks. On the one hand the man appeared to be able to transfer injuries to himself, logically he could transfer them to others in some sort of offensive measure. Perhaps he needed a firm grip, or simply a light touch. Jack didn't know these things yet, and so the offered hand was a risk.
Jack took it, shaking it before returning their hand to their pocket. No agonising pain, no sudden death. Lukas was supposed to be new to abilities, perhaps he could not yet control it, or even more simply had not wanted to harm Jack. They would reserve judgement.
"I'm Jack, you a new patient here?"
Lukas had no way of knowing their true identity or their true purpose here, and Jack could lie with the smooth practice of one born to it. Not that they had lied. They'd merely suggested that they themselves were a patient with their question.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @lukaspope | Jack didn't bother checking their phone to see if they had the right room, they'd memorised it, and it was almost unheard of for Jack to forget things. It hadn't been hard to track down the man's hotel room. They'd kept an eye out for unusual metahumans across the country, and Lukas Pope was not only on that list, but happened to be visiting the San Francisco MNRU to have his abilities analysed. Jack just couldn't resist the opportunity. They were, rather unusually, here alone, but then they were fairly confident that the man would not attempt to kill them, even with Jack's rather bald-faced interest in the nature of their ability.
Lukas had made an unusual decision. They were a metahuman, and a not insignificant one from what information Jack could gather, and yet they had shown no interest in the Hero Program, preferring instead to remain a simple police officer. It was intriguing.
It wouldn't be the first Metahuman that Jack had contacted, Jack's ability only made the powers of others all the more fascinating. They had successfully replicated the more straightforward ones with technology, but something that allowed the transfer of injuries? Presumably some sort of cellular regeneration with an empathetic feedback link. That and a notably increased healing factor of his own. The man was no Wolverine, but his abilities made him interesting, and Jack rarely needed more of an excuse than interesting to start prying into other people's lives.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | It was an interesting statement, considering that half of what she seemed to get up to in her spare time could in fact advance the human race significantly. They tended to overlook all those other little misdemeanours if what they produced was valuable enough. Look at Einstein. Admittedly some of Josie's crimes would land her a long stint in prison, should they come to light, but that wouldn't prevent someone from profiting from her artificial intelligence work.
The bots themselves were impressive, but not as impressive as the near sentient programs that drove them. If Jack hadn't already constructed Erys they might have been jealous. That was why they hadn't built an AI since. There was too much trouble down that road.
They would have to keep a closer eye on Josie's work, to ensure that she didn't build something she couldn't control. Really, what had the world done before Jack was about to keep an eye on things?
"HAL? Seems a little clichéd, and if the law of dramatic irony has anything to do with it those two will definitely turn on you. If there is such a thing as fate, you are tempting it."
They mulled the question over for a minute, "Something like Olivaw perhaps, I always did enjoy Asimov's laws, simplistic though they are."
They shrugged, "Although you do strike me as the dramatic type. What can I say? So am I, it's so much more fun that way. I think I get it from family. Or not depending on who you ask…"
They dropped another shrimp into their mouth, letting their mind wander to what they remembered of Josie's family, which was precisely everything they'd managed to recover from government and online databases. Their doctor's notes had been particularly interesting. And once Josie had a closer look at the partial designs Jack had given them, they were sure that her loyalty would be solidified, at least partially.
After all, with the Doctor dead, Jack was likely the only person who could give her brother some semblance of a proper life back. They were no medic, but the chip they had designed and partially constructed could bridge damaged nerve fibres, particularly those ones found in the spine.
"Though I'm sure we can help each other with our families."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack pulled a face; they weren't much for travelling, certainly not to somewhere like Russia. The place had a poor reputation for both weather and civil rights. Jack knew enough about their system of government to have their concerns. Still, they had already done some research into 177's history, and had turned up little. There were still places that could be searched from where they were, but inevitably they would have to head out to the actual site of Laboratory 1. Potentially Moscow as well, depending on where they might find records.
Jack would have to brush up on their Russian.
"I have no doubt we will end up there at some point in the near future. I have no real wish to visit Russia, but needs must."
They had handed back the phone, and watched, head cocked, as 177 smiled bitterly. They hadn't quite expected that response, but it made more sense once they read the response she had typed out. That she referred to herself as an experiment so readily was surprising, although it was harder to judge, it was difficult to ascertain tone through text. Business-like, they moved on.
"Well at least that should help us narrow down the location. I might be able to track down the records of soldiers executed for such crimes in the rough window of time that the laboratory was operating. After that it's just a process of elimination."
They looked back up at the older woman, "Well Anna, it looks like you're going home."

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? + @josephine | Jack's mouth quirked, in truth someone like Josephine would be lucky to have access to any of Jack's designs. The girl was bright, they would give her that, almost a breath of fresh air in a world otherwise filled with dull, unintelligent people. Almost. If this had been a few years ago Jack could have considered their intellect an equal to their own. They were entertaining to talk to, and likely would be for some time to come, but they held no illusions that they already outstripped Josephine in intellect. It was faintly amusing that she seemed to think herself an equal.
Of course, to reveal just how advanced some of Jack's designs were would ruin the whole point of this negotiation. Josephine would wonder why Jack was willing to part with concepts of such staggering potential for mere information. Information they could have acquired themselves had they the inclination. No, they would feed her various designs far enough ahead of the curve to maintain her interest, but not so far ahead that they might give away Jack's true nature.
There was another strange physical tic. She had cocked her head, presumably connected to the internet once more. Jack was almost jealous, it was a potent ability, with a myriad of applications.
They began to eat, plucking a shrimp from the top level of the platter and carefully peeling the shell away from it. It was delicious, their opinion of Josephine's taste climbed a notch. At least she could pick a good restaurant.
"I trust in your abilities."
Jack did, but they would check the integrity of the encryption and probably make a few tweaks of their own. They had no doubt that she would do her best to research both themselves, and Anna once she left the restaurant. Not that it would do any good. Jack's family was wealthy anyway, with a great deal of political influence within America, but what wouldn't show up to her would be their influence within the Families, and that influence stretched a lot deeper. As to Anna, Jack had conducted a degree of their own research into her background, and if Jack couldn't find anything, there was nothing to be found.
"It seems we have an accord, I assume we can simply eat and talk about something besides business for a moment. Or would you rather keep business and pleasure separate?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Of course, it always came back to that. Payment.
People these days were so predictable, in fact, people all across history had always been easily bought. Money had little meaning to Jack, both because they had little trouble in acquiring it, and also because it had been hammered into them at an early age that it was never about money. Money was a tool, a means to an end, if you truly wished to be great then your ultimate ambition should be for something more than mere wealth. Still, from what they had gathered Cory wasn't exactly doing well for herself. Money would likely be a salve to many of her problems.
At least temporarily, no doubt more problems would come of her choosing to work for Jack, but they were careful not to mention that. After all, they didn't want to discourage her now that she was clearly considering the possibility.
"I can, enough for you to live relatively comfortably on, though it will come with certain conditions attached."
They paused, then smiled, "Nothing morally repugnant I can assure you, by any stretch of the definition."
