a taste of home Of course Ashley was down to test new ice cream places. Ashley was always down to test just about any food establishment that Alice suggested because, inevitably, it was always a heavenly culinary experience. Plus, it had been a busy few weeks, and Ashley was grateful for the little time she had back here in San Francisco before she flew out again for more McKenna Chase shows. If it was time spent consuming ice cream, then it was time well spent.
Ashley and Alice normally frequented the frozen Greek yoghurt place that they’d visited together the first day they’d met, but, heart-breakingly, it was closed for refurbishment until further notice. It had been particularly hard on Alice, who’s very heart belonged to that little shop, but luckily she’d pulled herself together and found them an alternative.
“Man, I don’t even know what to order if it’s not my usual,” Ashley said woefully, linking onto Alice’s arm as they walked. “Is that sad? It’s pretty sad.”
Alice decided to go down a more adventurous route, but Ashley’s heart was instantly won by the delicious-looking batch of strawberry ice cream. It looked like it had real fruit in it, but Ashley couldn’t really pretend to care – so long as it was sweet and juicy.
She let Alice lead the way as they searched for seats, occupying herself with the first taste of her ice cream. Oh, it was so delicious and- oops.
Alice had come to a halt at an occupied table which was apparently the only place in the shop where the two of them could sit next to each other. The sudden stop was missed by Ashley, too absorbed by that gorgeous first lick of strawberry ice cream, and she’d realised just a little too late. She managed to stop herself from marching straight past, but at a cost. The tip of her nose pressed against the top of her ice cream, leaving a small pink circle that was very, very cold.
Great first impression to their table companion.
She waved, looking embarrassed, before proceeding to wipe the ice cream from her nose. “I am such a klutz, honestly. I’m Ashley, by the way.” Might as well throw in her introduction alongside. “Nice to meet you!” (Ice cream accidents aside).

Lazy Evening Unsure whether or not she was hallucinating Cory’s harsh words on Ashley’s Mario Kart prowess, it took a moment for Ashley to realise that, yes, the agreement had definitely come from somewhere above her head. She tipped her head back, back arched comically as she searched. Simply turning around and gazing up at the building would have made just too much sense, apparently.
Then her mouth dropped open and she nearly collapsed back against the pavement, spinning so she could gawk even more obviously at her friend dangling from a gutter. Upside down. No hands.
“Wha- whuh… spider monkey!”
The words tumbled out of Ashley’s gaping mouth without bothering to consult her brain, and they were still slowly registering for her as Cory continued her casual discussion while she performed amazing feats of strength and dexterity.
“…Yeah, the creamy one was awesome…”
Her voice was a little faraway in tone. Ashley was still getting her head around the fact that Cory was almost definitely a spider monkey in disguise, but the mention of food managed to break through her reverie.
At least Cory had responded to her, rather than hiding up on that gutter and brooding alone about Dana’s complete lack of respect. Ashley probably would have tried to track Cory down regardless to make sure she was okay, but dropping down on her voluntarily made things a lot easier – even if it had been rather alarming.
“No, no I don’t drive,” Ashley said. “Well, like, I can, but I don’t.” She laughed, blushing a little at the admission. She eyed the motorbike, curiosity piqued. “You got a spare helmet?”
Cory’s invitation back to her place was hardly enthusiastic, but Ashley didn’t take it personally. It was more like Cory couldn’t believe Ashley wanted to visit her flat in the first place. Which, of course, she did.
“Duh! We can kick back and enjoy some good old Nintendo. I swear, I’ve practised since the last time we raced, so you can quit acting like it’s a sure win.” Ashley offered her a teasing grin, knowing full well that Cory had every right to act that way. Her Mario Kart skills certainly hadn’t bloomed overnight, but she wasn’t about to let Cory think otherwise just yet. Hey, maybe if she’d thought positively enough, it might just come true.

Lazy Evening Ashley had to look down to make sure her jaw hadn’t dropped to the floor.
What… what just happened?
One second Dana and Cory had been going at it in front of the whole table, the next Cory had dumped the girl onto Instagram-dude’s lap and jumped to her feet. The world had slowed a little as she raised her arms to scream her revenge; Dana was squirming a little uncomfortably but not actually making any attempts to back herself up. Ashley was a little sad to see it confirmed that Dana had just been using Cory for the attention, but she was sadder still to see the heat in Cory’s cheeks. Hot rage burning on the coals of being just another straight girl’s “experiment”.
Ashley stood up herself once Cory marched out, meeting Dana with her best disappointed frown. She hadn’t known the ins-and-outs of Dana and Cory’s makeshift relationship – only that it hadn’t been anything serious – but it still wasn’t fair of Dana to have used Cory like that. She shuddered to think of how much Cory had spent on drinks for the two of them in their short time together.
“CORYELLE? HEY, CORYELLE!”
It was surprisingly difficult to battle her way back out into the main club, and once she was there it was even more difficult to spot Cory. She figured the young DJ wouldn’t have fancied hanging around, however, and so she made a beeline for the exit.
Bursting out into the night, she spun in a full circle and called Cory’s name once more.
“If you can hear me, come back!”
She searched her mind, trying to think of something that would suitably console Cory without patronising her. There was no way she wanted Cory to spend the rest of the night miserably seething by herself.
“Pizza and Nintendo?! Does that sound good?”
Ashley still hadn’t spotted Cory, so she started to walk down the pavement towards the taxi rank. “C’mon Coryelleee, you know you can’t resist whooping my ass at Mario Kart..!”

The Key to Friendship September The run with Imran had been pretty respectable - Ashley had only just recently ended things with him after it became apparent that he was way more passionate about their relationship than she was. Once she found herself trying to think of excuses not to go back to his place, she knew that it was time to disappoint both her roommate and her mother and break up with the guy. He wasn’t keen on staying friends, which was unfortunate as he was an intelligent and interesting person, but Ashley understood. There hadn’t been much time to devote to a boyfriend anyway, which was probably why things had lasted as long as they had. Ashley had plunged headfirst into the hectic new McKenna Chase schedule and, with shows all around the country coming up, it was for the best that she focused on her career for now. That didn’t stop her from nagging Alice to stop focusing so much on her career, of course. She’d become absorbed by the Hero Program and still she managed to work a couple of shifts in a kitchen each week. Considering how much Alice seemed to have enjoyed being in a relationship before, Ashley was worried that this long stretch of singledom wasn’t entirely what Alice wanted right now. Of course, she couldn’t say that, because Alice would remind her of her own rather tragic serial monogamist love life. Right now, Alice was hosting a guy at their flat - but not like that. Her friend Stephen, who occasionally seemed to be shooting daggers at her when no one was looking (or was she just paranoid?), was a fashion designer who had pioneered Hero fashion. It had been a huge boost to his career and he had an upcoming show in New York of all places, so he was visiting to generally celebrate and ensure that Paladin would be showing up as a special guest. Ashley was curled on the sofa, stuffed toy elephant tucked under her legs as an improvised pillow, watching from across the room as Alice prepared something that smelled utterly amazing in the kitchen while Stephen sat at the breakfast bar - probably equally mesmerised. “Paladin as special guest is sure to be a show-stopper,” Ashley agreed, lifting her chin onto the back of the sofa so the others could see her face. “But also woah, how cool to just be in New York! I hope you get fancy hotel rooms free of charge.”

A Big Apple a Day... “Oh wow, that’s amazing!” Ashley caught Senri’s challenging tone and grinned broadly in response. “I’m a singer, so I like to think my lungs can handle a lot. I’ll walk wherever you take me so long as it’s not like, an 80 degree slope or something. And maybe let’s not run the whole way,” she added, giggling. She may be fit, but she’d already been to the gym this morning and she didn’t exactly want to push it in case she wrecked herself for the rest of her time in New York.
Her eyes flipped up briefly as Senri said some kind of additional grace in what sounded like Japanese. She wanted to learn the language some day – her music was popular over there too and she was eager to push herself more firmly onto the market. Relying on interpreters the whole time wouldn’t be fun. If she had the time, next year maybe, she’d enrol herself in a beginners class or something.
She watched in envy as Senri carefully selected the turkey sandwich. It looked heavenly.
“So it’s your day off, right?” Ashley asked, partly to distract herself from staring at the delicious looking sandwich. “What do you do?”
The girl was obviously in great shape – she wouldn’t be surprised if she was an athlete of some kind. Then again, she seemed to have the appetite of an unsupervised child at a birthday party – highly unlikely that a professional athlete would consume all that bread so happily in one sitting. Ashley tilted her head in curiosity as she waited for Senri to finish her mouthful.

The Key to Friendship Ashley smacked at Alice again, her fist stopping dead when it reached Alice’s arm. Sometimes having a superhero best friend was distinctly unsatisfying.
“Grow up!” she wailed, still giggling at Alice’s childish antics.
She nodded slowly as she listened to Alice’s rather reasonable excuses, taking a long sip of her wine while maintaining eye contact. It was true – now wasn’t really the time for Alice to be dating. Maybe once she’d settled into her life as a Hero, once she’d figured out the rules and boundaries of her life as a government-endorsed crime fighter, maybe then Alice would run into somebody who could sweep her off her feet.
Ashley had jokingly suggested the potential of a Romeo-and-Juliet style romance with a supervillain, but Alice had dismissed that idea with surprising forcefulness. She was really quite serious about her role in enforcing justice and Ashley could see just how purely Alice believed that what she was doing was the Right Thing To Do. The girl had an iron set of morals, apparently.
“Alright, I’ll stop acting like my mom,” Ashley said with a sigh of defeat. As if she could possibly be as bad as her grandbaby-deprived mother. Honestly, why couldn’t Will have just kept it together with that nice Charlie person? Now the pressure was back on her.
“What does he do?” Ashley echoed, stalling a little for time. “He’s a PhD student. Something to do with biology, I think. He only mentioned it like, once. Lives on his own and moved here pretty recently – he keeps asking me out for coffee whenever we get talking in the hall, so I’m pretty sure he’s interested.”
She shrugged. “He seems nice, I guess? You can give me your review score after you meet him. Let me know if he seems a good enough catch for my mom.”
Ashley took another sip of her champagne; really, it was more of a swig.

Lazy Evening It seemed that Dana had managed to spot her after all, and Ashley had a split-second to react to the incoming drunken cannonball. Considering her level of inebriation, Dana still had remarkably good aim. It wasn’t easy picking out a small brunette from a crowd of people pressed together as they waited for drinks. A couple of them had probably received some elbowing as Dana made her way through, but you could forgive her for that once you heard the sheer joy in her “MACDADDY” yells.
“A game! For sure!” Ashley’s eyes sparkled mischievously, already knowing what game they were about to play and just how sorely Dana was surely going to lose. There were some people who were the “try-anything-once”-type, and then there was Dana, who was more of a “try-absolutely-everything-once-even-if-it-kills-me” queen. It made for some great entertaining stories, but Ashley was hardly tempted to try the lifestyle for herself. Observing from the side-lines was dramatic enough, thank you very much.
They didn’t rush off immediately – Cory generously offered to buy Ashley a soda before turning her attention to her phone – so she took the opportunity to get herself a cranberry juice (“That’s right, nothing else! I mean it, no vodka!”) before they went to join Dana’s friends. Or maybe they were complete strangers – Dana had a knack for forming fast friendships.
“Thanks, Coryelle,” she said cheerily, raising her glass. “And duh, I’m totally ready. You might be a pro at Dana-duty but I wrote the book on it.”
Sure enough, the group’s fingers were all raised once more for a game of Never Have I Ever. Dana was perched on some guy’s knee, her legs kicking lazily back and forth. Ashley giggled and pulled Cory’s hand down from her eyes so she could see.
An argument was taking place on the far side of the table.
“You have not dated my little sister!”
“Dude, look at everyone’s fingers, she gets around.”
Ashley cringed, half-anticipating a fight to break out, but the two seemed to suddenly resolve their conflict over a shared interest in the large cocktail pitcher before them.
Dana wriggled excitedly, beckoning for Cory to come closer. “My turn, my turn!”
Ashley squeezed her way onto the seat opposite, ready to see what Dana was about to come up with. She recognised the guy from Instagram posts that Dana had shown her – this was somebody Dana really wanted to impress. And that meant she was going to bring up something that she thought was particularly wild so she could confess to it. The group watched in anticipation as Dana pulled an exaggerated thinking face.
Then, her eyes lit up.

A Big Apple a Day... Ashley nodded proudly on behalf of Alice’s excellent roommate qualities. “She’s the best – we both have busy careers too so it’s like, the dream living situation. She’s super understanding and has this instinct for when I’m really craving frozen Greek yoghurt.”
She laughed. It was true, Alice’s ability to read her fro-yo desires was uncanny.
“Now playing tag sounds a great way to stay in shape!” she said excitedly. “Count me in!”
Senri seemed delighted that Ashley wanted to join her in grace. She reached out for Ashley’s hands and she let Senri lead the prayer. It was definitely different to what Ashley was used to, having been raised on the classic Catholic “Bless us, O Lord” complete with signing, but it was sweet to hear Senri’s message and she echoed the ‘Amen’ with enthusiasm. Once Senri released her hands, now ready to tackle the feast before her, Ashley signed the cross quickly and discreetly before returning to her soup.
“No, no, it was a perfect interruption, that was beautiful,” Ashley insisted, swallowing her mouthful swiftly. “I was just going to ask if you had plans for this afternoon. I really want to see the sights but I just have no idea where to start. I guess I was wondering if you, you know… if you have the time?”
She was surprisingly nervous as she formulated the request – hoping that she wasn’t taking advantage of the girl’s kindness. It wasn’t like Ashley would be too disappointed if she didn’t acquire a tour guide after all – she could always find a guide online or something. It just seemed nice to have an actual local take her around. Even if she didn’t have time, Ashley would try her best to extract a couple of tips and hints for her afternoon plans. New York was a big place, after all.

A Big Apple a Day... “Yah, fortunately my roomie’s a chef!”
Ashley laughed at her own living situation. It was pretty fantastic to be living with someone whose cooking was actually worth paying for.
She didn’t pretend to know what a traceuse was – Ashley assumed it was at least somewhat related to running, but her knowledge of parkour was so limited that she could barely distinguish it from free-running if asked. Still, it was nice to get the invite for a run down some trails. “That would be awesome! No promises I could keep up,” she added, a teasing smile on her lips.
There was a brief interruption for Senri’s food to arrive. And then more food. And then more. And more still.
Ashley’s eyes widened – she quickly tried to disguise her shock as envy, realising that it was probably quite rude to seem judgemental about somebody’s lunch options. But still, that was a lot of food for not a lot of girl.
She nodded enthusiastically at Senri’s dreams of hiking the Appalachian Trail. “Plenty to see, huh? Do you-”
Ashley’s attempted request for a tour guide was interrupted by Senri’s sudden question. She smiled happily. “Sure, can I join you?”
Although Ashley’s faith was very important to her, she didn’t often find herself saying grace in public – or even much at home, except quietly in her head. It was something she had done lots with her parents but she didn’t like to feel like she was forcing it on those around her. It was refreshing for Senri to ask her, and she hoped that it wasn’t too weird to be saying grace mid-soup.

The Key to Friendship Now Ashley really was regretting not ordering a bubble machine – that would have been so cool. As Alice said, they could always get one for the next time they were celebrating. Alice’s birthday was a long way off now but that gave Ashley plenty of time to plan for the day Alice hit her twenties. Bubble machine was going straight to the top of the list.
“Oh yeah, duh.” Ashley smacked her forehead against the heel of her hand. “I guess it might be weird if we show up together too – don’t want people kidnapping McKenna Chase to get Paladin’s attention…”
She laughed.
“It is seriously weird that both of us can talk about ourselves in the third-person. If I didn’t know any better I’d say we were a little crazy.” She shook her head. “But okay, okay, no matchy-matchy.”
Alice reacted pretty predictably to the mention of plus ones, immediately adopting a very suggestive look once the surprise had faded from her face. Ashley smacked gently at her friend, the eyebrows setting her off into a fit of giggles. “Stop! His name’s Imran, he lives somewhere in this building and I’m sure he looks great in a suit.”
The mental picture gave her no butterflies, but she hoped the added detail would get Alice all excited.
“I could ask if he has any friends…?” They both knew Alice wasn’t seeing anyone at the moment. She barely had time to eat and sleep, let alone pay attention to men. Her thing with Jason had ended before they’d even moved in together (Ashley wasn’t surprised, although she knew it was her advice that had kickstarted the dumping, so she couldn’t say too much). It wouldn’t surprise Ashley if Alice turned down the invitation of a potential plus one outright. Ashley felt similarly – it felt juvenile to prioritise boys when she had a career to focus on. But her mother just continued to ask and ask if there was a man in her life, so she felt obligated to try.

A Big Apple a Day... Ashley sighed longingly. “It sure was. I am so jealous of people who can cook well.”
Since moving away from home, Ashley had cooked a lot more – mostly under Alice’s supervision, but sometimes it was just her left to fend for herself in the apartment. It was always basic stuff – recipes she had to follow as part of her dietary plan – but at least she’d stopped making so many mistakes and accidentally burning things. Ashley was still a long way off from mastery however. She just didn’t have the knack for knowing which flavours brought out the flavours in other things, when something was perfectly crispy rather than dry and charcoaled underneath. Practice would get her good at certain dishes, but she probably wasn’t destined for the chef life.
“Woah, you really put in the miles, nice work,” Ashley said approvingly. “Maybe I’ll catch you on one of those trails… or I guess, maybe you’ll catch me.”
She really hoped that there would be time this week to go out into Central Park, but her schedule seemed pretty packed. Her manager was making the most of this week up in the city that never sleeps. It was a worry that she’d have any energy left by the time the show rolled around. Good thing McKenna’s crowds were always so infectiously lively.
“Sen,” Ashley echoed, enjoying the sound of it. “Great to meet you too. I’m originally from San Francisco! I’m here for work this week, then all over the East Coast. Should be a blast,” she said happily. “This afternoon is off for me too, so I was planning on seeing some sights while I can. Feels a waste to come all the way here and not even get to know the city, you know?”

A Big Apple a Day... “It is! I got my mom to recreate it for me once,” Ashley said, proud of her mother’s culinary achievements. It occurred to her that Alice was also a rather capable cook… She smiled at the prospect of asking Alice to recreate fast food. Alice would probably do it – for her – but it would be a fancy alternative that she could actually take pride in. The girl had standards over her fro yo, as if she’d be any different with soup.
“So you’ve been working out too?”
She was happy to have deduced correctly, and for a second Ashley was wearing a deerstalker in her mind’s eye. Will would have been proud.
“I was just in the hotel gym, but I’m going to try for a run through Central Park sometime this week, I think! Gotta have the tourist experience, am I right?”
Ashley took the pause to take another healthy slurp of soup, which was interrupted by the roars of a rather furious monster that seemed to inhabit her lunch partner’s abdomen. She snorted, managing to avoid spraying soup everywhere, and eyed the woman with a mischievous grin.
“I hope you’ve ordered something good!” She paused, then extended her hand. It was definitely time to introduce herself properly, now that she had laughed at their digestive movements. “I’m Ashley, by the way.”
A handshake seemed oddly formal, but hugging would have been just plain weird. She’d have had to stand up and lean across the table – endangering her tasty soup! No sir, a handshake would have to make do.

A Big Apple a Day... It wasn’t too surprising to find the seat across from her suddenly occupied, but it was a little surprising to see a friendly face beaming radiantly at her, making cheerful introductions. Ashley felt her mood lift even higher, and she set the soup down on the table to give the stranger her full attention.
“Hi! How are you?”
The woman seemed to be her height, even smaller, actually, and had the gentle flush in her cheeks of somebody who had just been exercising. Ashley recognised it from her own face earlier, though she was sure that the only remnants now of her earlier workout were the gentle satisfying aches in her muscles. Either that, or this person was an avid, avid fan of Panera and had run at full speed to get here before the last seat was filled.
Considering the popularity of the place, Ashley couldn’t entirely rule it out, but she figured it was a far safer bet to assume that they too were refuelling following a workout session of some kind.
“This soup smells so good, I’m dying for it to cool down enough for me to actually eat some of it,” Ashley said, laughing at herself before giving her soup a blow. “All my cardio today has been leading up to this very moment.”
With that, she gathered a small spoonful of soup and sipped on it hesitantly. Satisfied she wasn’t about to burn her tongue off, Ashley gulped the rest of the spoonful down and met her table partner with a satisfied grin. That’s some good soup…

A Big Apple a Day... She had been awake since 4am, being dragged out for a photo shoot and interview early in the morning and then being left in peace to sample the hotel’s gym for the rest of the morning. The afternoon was free to her – she’d been told to take the chance to relax at home ahead of this weekend’s shows, but Ashley didn’t really feel like being cooped up in her room all day. She was in New York! What was the point in touring in different cities if you didn’t get to experience them?
She’d changed out of her sweaty gym gear into some clean gym gear – a comfort choice, trying to get herself in the mood for an energetic afternoon of sightseeing. It was tough deciding whether or not to opt for the celebrity-in-disguise sunglasses but in the end she went without. She had a black baseball cap to hide behind if she really felt the need, but people in New York seemed too busy and too focused on getting themselves from A to B to pay much attention to those around them.
It was only upon leaving the hotel that Ashley realised just how hungry she was feeling. She’d have to make a quick detour before hitting the sights, unless she wanted her stomach to provide a running commentary of the day.
It gurgled noisily at her, providing a lovely demonstration.
“Okay, okay…” Ashley hissed to herself, vaguely amused to be interacting with her stomach. She scanned the street with her eyes, searching for something that wouldn’t be too greasy and terrible, but would also serve as a bit of a treat on her afternoon off.
In the end, Ashley found herself ducking into a Panera and ordering herself a tasty looking chicken and wild rice soup. She grabbed a seat near the back and clutched the bowl in both hands, enjoying the warmth against her fingers. She was lucky to get a seat – the whole place was pretty full, and this had been the last remaining table, with just two free chairs. Still, the atmosphere wasn’t unpleasantly busy – Ashley quite enjoying the hum of activity from the neighbouring tables – and she closed her eyes while she breathed in the delicious smell of her soup.

The Key to Friendship Clink.
“To Paladin!”
Ashley set her glass down, smiling happily, and then remembered she was supposed to take a drink once she noticed Alice giving it a taste. She followed her lead, sipping it lightly. Mmm, fizzy!
“So it’s good?” she asked. “Just kinda tastes of bubbles to me. Which, I guess you’re right, is the best way to celebrate. I should have hired a bubble machine or something!” Ashley sighed wistfully. “Next time.”
She wasn’t entirely sure what the ‘next time’ was that she was referring to. Next time one of them became a Hero? Considering Ashley’s apparent decidedly average gene selection, that was pretty unlikely. It was a little rude of the universe, to be honest, seeing as Will had developed powers and she was definitely pretty related to him, but that was okay. She could count herself lucky that she wasn’t one of the poor souls who were unable to control their powers, at least.
Ashley laughed at the mention of Dom’s never-ending thirst for business opportunities. “I would love to come, I’m sure my manager would be pretty happy to hear about that invite. Is there going to be a carpet? We could wear matching dresses!” she squealed, getting more than a little carried away. “Or maybe not, I probably shouldn’t be stealing your thunder. This is your achievement, not McKenna’s.”
She beamed proudly. Then she tilted her head.
“Do we have plus ones?”
Ashley had been running into this guy in the hall pretty regularly over the last couple of months, though she hadn’t told Alice about him yet. There wasn’t much to say except his name was Imran and he was doing a PhD in …bio-something or other. He seemed nice enough and obviously liked her, so she was thinking of taking him up on one of his many offers of coffee. Or in this case, the Hero Program unveiling.
Which okay, wasn’t exactly coffee, but who wouldn’t want the chance to see history take place?
