kiss and tell Ashley cast Alice a disapproving look. “You have lots of brains so shut up, you would make great zombie bait.”
She laughed softly as Alice scolded her for being offended by Stephen getting to meet a potential new man before she did. “Well, I gotta say, I’m a little jealous he pretty much helped to set you guys up.” And more than a little surprised, too. “But I’ll get over it once I’m the maid of honour at the wedding.”
Alice didn’t have much ammunition left when it came to throwing things at Ashley, which was probably a good thing. Ashley couldn’t help but tease her best friend with stuff like this. It was just so easy to get Alice blushing.
She patted her stomach fondly as Alice inspected her six pack. Of course she knew that most guys who kept up a decent workout in the gym were likely to have better abs than her, but she also knew that Alice was more than capable of lying in order to stroke Ashley’s ego.
“Why thank you, they are impressive,” she said with a wink. “I’m glad to hear that his are almost drool-worthy though. Bring him along on our next gym session and let’s see if we can push past the ‘almost’ barrier.” Ashley giggled then, feeling a little childish for discussing a stranger’s abs in such a crass way.
Ashley beamed happily at Alice’s praise for her karaoke skills. “What can I say except you’re welcome?” she sang, temporarily jamming out as she hummed the next line. Then she snapped out of her performance, meeting Alice’s thoughtful look with her own intrigued gaze.
“Hey, that’s a great idea! Is it too much for a first date – just inviting him straight to your house?” she pondered. “I know you’ve kinda already done that but… you know what I mean. Maybe that’s a second date idea.”

Kiss and tell Ashley pouted. “Oh okay, now I see why you refuse to be my number one groupie and attend all my shows. All these excuses of saving the city and working diner shifts when really it’s because I have the stage presence of a corpse?”
She pointed her finger at Alice. “When they reanimate me as a zombie I’m coming for your brain first!”
The two of them would still probably be best friends even as zombies. They’d roam San Francisco together in search of frozen Greek yoghurt (topped with brains, and maybe fresh strawberries too). It would probably put a bit of a dent in both of their respective careers but so long as the landlord never kicked them out for fear of getting zombified as a result they would probably happily make their way through their zombie lives together. This kind of thinking was exactly why Alice and Ashley were perfect roommates.
“Woah, what, Stephen gets to meet him before I do?” Ashley folded her arms. Stephen was a very jealous friend of Alice’s – his feelings obviously stemming from unrequited love – and his attitude towards Ashley had left their relationship a little less friendly than Ashley usually kept with her acquaintances. There was only so much side-eyeing a girl could take.
Ashley reached out to pat Alice’s arm sympathetically. “You’re not bad at dating! You’re just out of practice because you’ve been in a committed relationship with your job for so long,” she explained. It was a pretty valid comment.
She was happy to see Alice’s reaction to her suggestion – it seemed to have boosted her confidence significantly. After all, if there was one thing Alice could be confident about, it was her taste in food. Punching bad guys was a relatively recent hobby compared to her lifelong appreciation of the culinary arts.
“Are his abs better than mine?” Ashley asked, looking down at her stomach. She still liked to maintain hers, although they were toned rather than bulky. She wasn’t sure her management would respond too happily to McKenna Chase, American sweetheart, suddenly turning into a weightlifter, no matter how hilarious that would be.
“Alice, as if you could replace me! He might be a rich, intelligent hunk, but you know there’s nobody who can belt out our karaoke playlists word-for-word better than me.”

'a' is for amity “That’s a shame – they could all have matching red jackets.” Ashley’s eyes lit up. “That would be so cute! If I start walking this way more often, I might have to start it myself!” She giggled. McKenna Chase had her own modest group of ‘Chasers’ – apparently you’d made it in show business once your fanbase had nicknamed themselves – but they didn’t wear matching jackets. Ari’s fans were clearly missing an opportunity here.
“A bit of magic is just what you need to rejuvenate! I was kinda too busy staring to look at the faces in the crowd, but I just know you’ll have brightened them all up. How noble,” she added with a grin.
Ari obviously paid attention to passers-by in her territory – she’d immediately clocked that Ashley didn’t normally take this street. “Born and raised! I moved out of my parents’ kinda recently though, so I haven’t explored everywhere in this particular part of the city. I had to follow a diversion on the way back from the gym today and like, boy am I glad I did!” she finished excitedly.
Ashley laughed at Ari’s ‘plot twist’ comment, her giggles intensifying as Ari bowed suddenly. This girl was a dork, but cool about it. Just the way Ashley aspired to be.
“I like to surround myself with dorks,” she said happily, smiling gently at Ari’s near-slip-up that almost turned her name into some kind of McDonald’s product. “Makes it harder for people to figure out just how weird I am.” She poked her tongue through her teeth, playful grin spreading from ear to ear.
Ashley watched the will-o’-the-wisps dance in the air, enjoying the little light show. “Oh, it’s your ability! That’s hella cool, dude,” she said seriously. “I would kill to have you at one of my shows – this kind of performance is so up McKenna Chase’s street that it’s not even funny. What a fun power!” Her tone was lightly tinged with jealousy – Ash was powerless, after all. Even her own brother had a power, although it had brought him nothing but trouble.
Still, Ashley had been unbelievably lucky in life so far, so she could forgive the universe for not bestowing magic gifts upon her. So long as her album continued to sell well and fans continued to show up to concerts, Ashley could be more than happy with her lot in life.

kiss and tell Ashley nodded in sincere, firm agreement. “Paladin not being able to punch people would be like McKenna not being able to sing. I’d just be standing up on stage like this.”
She suddenly went stiff, staring blankly into the distance. She stayed motionless for a solid five seconds before slowly sliding her gaze across to stare directly at Alice, followed by a familiar transition into a creepy smile complete with crazy eyes. Ashley could feel the extra chins forming – God, she was attractive.
“It’s a scoring system for boys! And men,” she added generously. “But if you were eligible you’d be off the scale, obviously, and too good for anybody to deserve your lovin’. I also make it up entirely depending on how nice and mature they seem so don’t worry… Nate’s doing well for now,” she said with a wink. “Would be neat to meet him face to face, but I guess I can wait for you to actually start dating him first.”
With a dramatic sigh, as though Alice was being deliberately cruel in not having immediately entered into a committed relationship with the guy, Ashley leaned her head against the sofa with a forlorn look.
“Of course it’s great, that Jason was such a child – probably best to keep your catchment age above 25 if you ask me.” She grinned. “So nope, I definitely don’t think you’re weird. Hey, most of the guys I’ve dated have been older than me too. Probably all of them.”
None of the relationships had been particularly successful, of course, but that wasn’t the point.
“Dinner would be perfect – you’re a total foodie so you could show off by taking him to one of your many hidden gems! And if he doesn’t wanna, then you can always invite me instead. You always find the best places. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right?”
Ashley joined Alice in a blush, and then snorted with laughter at Alice’s quick dismissal of mini-golf. “I understand, babe. Mini-golf is our thing.”

kiss and tell Ashley smiled. “Would make your job pretty boring though – I know how much you love punching bad guys in the name of justice.”
She listened as Alice explained a little more about Nate’s role at the MNRU. It made sense. A centre that conducted research on metahuman abilities was likely to be a pretty safe bet for using that knowledge to help when those abilities went wrong. She felt bad for not realising such a place existed. Will could probably use some therapy for dealing with his power… but Will could probably use some therapy for a whole basket of things, if she was honest.
“Oh, that’s actually really cool!” she said excitedly. “That must be super rewarding work. I award him bonus points for career choice.” Ashley ticked her imaginary review in the air, a strong indication of her positive impression of the guy. Alice knew that Ashley would be honest – even if that meant brutally so.
Alice had hesitated before saying his age, but Ashley was pleasantly surprised at how young he was. She’d been imagining closer to thirty.
“Twenty-six is fiiiine,” she said, waving her hand dismissively. “So young to be a doctor – resident, whatever – at the MNRU! He must be so smart.” Her eyes widened in awe. “What do you think of it – do you like it or is he too old for you? For the record, I’m on board.”
She perked up even more as Alice talked herself into sending him a text. Ashley wasn’t about to pressure Alice into persuading him into anything remotely serious, she’d learnt her lesson after her meddling got Alice dumped by Jason (good riddance), but she was thrilled to see Alice excited about a guy. Recently, it had felt like Alice was throwing herself a little too fully into her role as Paladin.
“What would you do if he asked you out?” she asked, a little dreamily. “Dinner, drinks… mini-golf?” Ashley poked her tongue out the side of her teeth, grinning playfully.

kiss and tell Ashley raised a hand as though to shield herself from the ferocity of Alice’s glare. “Has Paladin got a new power? C’mon, talk about if looks could kill!”
She giggled all the same, and she knew that Alice was secretly enjoying the attention. Maybe even not-so-secretly – the two girls could read each other so well at this point that there was usually a second layer of communication threading throughout their conversations. Keeping secrets from each other was a pointless exercise at best.
Like Alice, Ashley didn’t really know anything about becoming a doctor. She’d assumed that it took a long time to become a doctor, and therefore assumed Nate must be significantly older than the two of them, but that was about it. “What does he do at the MNRU? I thought that was for like… secret metahuman stuff?”
Will had told her something of the MNRU once. She didn’t really know what went on behind closed doors there, but she was intrigued to see what a not-completely-qualified doctor was doing at a metahuman research institute.
“Not that old? How old are we talking here – twenties, thirties?” Ashley’s last attempt at a relationship had been with an older guy – Imran, PhD student in a subject Ashley had never quite wrapped her head around – but she was also two years older than Alice. She usually found herself enjoying relationships a little more when the other person was more mature, but she wasn’t sure how Alice felt about such things. Jason had been slightly older but not by much – and certainly not much more mature. This sounded like unchartered territory for Alice.
“You don’t have to ask him on a date,” Ashley insisted. “Just say hi, let him know you’re back in San Francisco in an off-hand kinda way. Did it seem like he wanted to see you again?”
Ashley pouted sympathetically at Alice’s lamentation. “I bet he doesn’t! Plus, it takes two – it would be pretty hypocritical of him to judge you for that. You don’t wanna waste your time on hypocrites if that’s the case.”

'a' is for amity Ashley looked at the pile of tips Ari Chandler had accumulated. It was certainly impressive – Ari clearly had her fair share of adoring fans. It was hard to imagine that working as a street performer was particularly lucrative but she supposed it would all add up pretty quickly if this was the amount she received for just one show. Nothing that was about to propel her into millionaire status or anything, but probably enough to keep bills paid, mouths fed and red jackets clean and bright.
Ashley was definitely a big fan of the red jacket.
“I’ll say – you must have a whole bunch of admirers,” she said happily as Ari indicated the modest collection of tips with her eyes. “Do you get regular attendees?”
Having not really taken this route before at this time, Ashley wasn’t sure how much of a schedule Ari operated on. Her knowledge of such things were woefully limited, but that only made her more eager to learn.
“Ari Chandler, awesome,” Ashley echoed, trying her best to commit the name to memory. It was a strategy she’d picked up over the last year as she’d grown steadily in fame. Remembering people’s names was a sure-fire way to keep in their good books and Ashley had realised quite early on that being a singer was equal parts singing and networking. It was a good thing Ashley liked people.
Ari’s expression shifted suddenly, and Ashley furrowed her brow for a moment in confusion as the girl started to apologise. Once she realised what Ari was talking about, however, a slow beam spread across her face instead and she gave a delighted little laugh.
“Oh, dude, I’m sorry for the confusion – I didn’t think anyone would recognise me like this.” She pulled at the fabric of her gym clothes, looking almost apologetic herself. “Your eyes do not deceive you!” she said dramatically, slipping into an equally dramatic pose. Then she finally burst into full-blown laughter.
“Sorry I’m such a dork. McKenna is my stage name,” she explained gently. “But you can still call me Ash – if you want! Thanks for listening to my music, I’m honoured.” She met Ari’s lopsided smile with her own broad grin, happy to be bonding with a fellow artist.
“So all your tricks, how do you do them? Or is it a secret?” Ashley tapped her nose with a wink, eyes sparkling mischievously.

kiss and tell “First rodeo? Yee-hawwwouch!”
Ashley wasn’t one to take warnings seriously from Alice, even though it usually resulted in something getting thrown in her direction. Cushions and teddies she could handle – Ashley tended to finding herself treading more carefully if Alice was in the middle of chopping food. The girl had a lot of big, sharp knives.
This was actually a particularly favourable outcome for Ashley; now she had another cushion to lean on. Ashley plumped it and set it against the sofa before snuggling into place.
“Go on!”
Alice began to fill her in on the details. Starting with the personality was a really positive sign, and who was Ashley to deny the attraction of a guy with rich parents? She kept her lips sealed, although she could tell Alice was bracing herself for further mockery. The fact that he was a doctor was cool too. Clearly not just a pretty face with a trust fund and an abundance of spare time.
Of course Alice eventually melted away into the sofa as she described his good looks, and Ashley found herself laughing even though she knew Alice was deadly serious on some level about how handsome this guy was. Ashley tried to picture him. It didn’t give her butterflies, but she could definitely see the appeal from Alice’s perspective.
“Alright, alright, do I need to page Dr Dreamy and revive you from whatever this is?” she giggled, gesturing to Alice as she sprawled back onto the sofa. “Is he an actual doctor? Dude must be kinda old, right?” She was trying to picture all the doctors she had ever met – none of them particularly young or dashing. Alice must have hit the medical hunk jackpot.
“You should see if he’s back in town yet,” she suggested. “You’re clearly smitten.”

'A' is for amity Tonight, Alice and Ashley had planned a girls’ night. They weren’t really sure exactly what the night was going to entail just yet but, knowing Alice, there would be copious amounts of food. Maybe drink too, depending on how things developed. Alice wasn’t 21 but Ashley was, and it made a world of difference when it came to their night-time activities. Alice had gotten away with it in New York so the two were feeling brave about such things back here in San Francisco if a night in a club happened to take their fancy. However, the odds were equally in favour of the two of them eating their weight in pizza and passing out in front of a Disney film, so there was really no telling at this point just yet.
In advance of their undoubted overindulgences later on that evening, Ashley had been for a particularly long and challenging session in the gym a few blocks away. She’d showered there but she still felt a little self-conscious – she’d thrown her gym clothes back on afterwards, which probably didn’t help. Still, it wasn’t a long walk, and Ashley was in a good mood after meeting a personal best for Russian twist reps.
The road she’d walked down to get here had been blocked off over the course of her gym session, construction vehicles apparently needing both road and pavement to get their job done, so Ashley was taking a bit of a detour to get home. That was fine – hopefully the city could put up with her sweaty gym clothes for a few extra minutes.
As she rounded an unfamiliar corner, Ashley caught sight of a lone figure in a bright red jacket surrounded by a crowd of people. She gazed curiously – always an appreciator of any medium of performing arts – and watched with delight as a series of colourful and wonderful mirages burst into life. She crossed the road for a closer look, spellbound, and ended up staying for the entire show.
Not one for shyness, Ashley decided to hang back while the crowd dispersed so she could greet the performer herself.
“Hi!” she exclaimed warmly, dropping her coins into the performer’s hat on the ground as she drew closer. “I’m Ashley, nice to meet you!” Ashley extended a hand. “Like, wow, that was an amazing show. You’re really talented – such a creative eye!” she gushed.
Now that she was close, she could see that the girl was around her age. Ashley wondered briefly if she would recognise her as McKenna Chase – it was highly likely if the girl kept up with popular music. Ah well, she’d introduced herself as Ashley now so even if the girl did recognise her, she might dismiss her as a lookalike. After all, she was in sweaty gym gear with no make-up on, and even McKenna’s most ‘natural’ stage looks required a long time in the make-up artist’s chair.

kiss and tell “Oof.”
Ashley found herself smacked with a faceful of purple fur. The bear dropped into her lap and she pulled him close, fixing Alice with a reproachful glare. Then, as Alice talked about acquiring miniature statues for souvenirs, she couldn’t help but burst into gentle giggles. “Oh Alice, that is so lame. You cannot put them on display, all our guests will laugh at us.”
Once Alice was blushing, Ashley knew they were onto the good stuff.
“It was only one night ’cause you only had time for one night,” she pointed out. “You have his number, right?”
She wanted to figure out Alice’s intentions with this guy – although they were pretty plainly written on her face – but first… she needed to find out just a little more about him than how attractive he was. Ashley planted her chin on the purple teddy bear, eyes inquisitive.
“You gotta tell me more about him, dude. How else am I gonna stamp my seal of approval on him?” She laughed to herself. “Listen to me, I sound like my mom.”

Kiss and Tell Whilst Alice had kept Ashley more than up-to-date on her life as Fashion Week progressed, practically bombarding her with excited messages and the occasional snapchat, it still wasn’t the same as catching up in person. Ashley had been busy while Alice was away but it had still been lonely coming home to an empty apartment and so, although she was definitely excited to hear all of Alice’s gossip, she was mostly just excited to have her roommate back.
It was easier when you were the one away on your travels. Ashley was doing plenty of that now that McKenna Chase had shows planned all around the country and she had already granted Alice full access to her stuffed toy collection in case Alice got lonely and needed hugs. Apparently those might not be needed now, if Alice’s reports of her rather unconventional souvenir were anything to go by…
Alice’s flight had landed a couple of hours ago, so Ashley was pretty sure she’d find her best friend waiting for her once she got back. She didn’t even bother trying to exert some self-control as she hurried back to their apartment building – an assortment of groceries tucked under one arm – and when she finally reached the door it was with a rather dramatic swing of the door that she burst into the room.
Groceries dumped unceremoniously on the floor, Ashley slammed the door shut before launching herself onto the sofa. “I missed you!” she exclaimed, noting with some amusement that her over-sized purple bear was planted in Alice’s lap. She laughed and settled back onto the couch, groceries forgotten.
“How was the flight? Have you had anything to eat, drink?”
Mom-questions out the way, Ashley leaned in conspiratorially.
“Bring back any more souvenirs – apart from your new maaan?” She wriggled back swiftly to avoid the inevitable backlash from her super-powered friend. Sitting back actually allowed her to take a look at what Alice was wearing, which she beamed admiringly at. “Oh okay, new threads and a new boo. I see.” Ashley winked.

Lazy Evening Unsurprisingly, Cory was already well aware of her spider-monkey likeness. Also unsurprisingly, Cory wasn’t eager to stick around. Clearly Dana wasn’t about to rush out and try to make amends (which was probably the sensible option anyway) but Ashley couldn’t blame Cory for wanting to ditch the scene as quickly as possible. Ashley had to make an awkward little half-run to catch up with Cory. Even once she’d caught up, it was a conscious effort to keep up with the other girl’s pace.
“That’s cool, I’m jealous. It must be hella fun to just climb up the sides of buildings like that,” she commented cheerily. She was still quite aware that she was here to make Cory feel better after a pretty solid act of humiliation, so she was erring on the side of positivity rather than pressing Cory further. The gymnastics story was entirely believable, after all. “Would definitely be a fun workout!”
Cory phoned for the pizza as they walked, squeezing in an answer to her question about a spare helmet before the place picked up. Ashley frowned, about to protest, but Cory started her order and so she stayed silent for a moment. They reached Cory’s bike and Cory immediately slipped onto her seat, chucking her helmet at Ashley with a wink. Ashley took it with a smile, but just held it in her lap as she settled onto the space behind Cory on the bike.
She nodded enthusiastically at the suggestion of cheese bread – shocked that it was even a question.
“Alright!” Ashley said happily. “Great plan, Coryelle. The only other thing I can think of picking up is uh…” She held the helmet up in her hands. “Another one of these. You don’t know anyone you can borrow one from… anything? I don’t feel great with you not wearing a helmet.” She made an apologetic smile, feeling excruciatingly like a goody-two-shoes buzzkill. “I know you never crash in Mario Kart either but don’t wanna tempt fate, y’know?”
The noisy thrum of the engine was an intoxicating noise, and she couldn’t help an excitable smile eclipsing the awkwardness in her features. “I’ll try my best to be a good passenger, I promise!” She held up her little finger and grinned.

A taste of home “Nothing wrong with a bit of hometown loyalty,” Ashley grinned. After all, her own loyalty was firmly rooted in San Francisco. No matter how much time she spent in LA – or any other city that she stopped in around the country – Ashley could never lose her heart to anywhere else. She could definitely see herself spending time in other places but San Francisco would always be home. There was nothing quite like watching Karl the Fog (as the frequent weather event was affectionately known) consuming San Francisco’s bridges; and there was nowhere else in the world that she could do that.
Ashley nodded sympathetically with Alice. “You’ll get there some day!” She turned to Audrey. “She really is great. And that’s quite the step up, go you! You must be really talented yourself.”
Like Ashley, Alice was also a San Francisco loyalist. Her Hero work also tied her much more closely to the city, whereas Ashley’s job was steadily demanding her to spend less and less time at home. There wasn’t a complete lack of opportunity for Alice to branch out – especially across California – but for the most part her role was to protect her hometown and the surrounding areas from villains. She’d been in New York for Fashion Week, of course, but that was a rarity.
Trust Alice to meet a guy while she was out there, though. Stephen must have been devastated – he could barely tolerate Ashley’s presence and her closeness with Alice was strictly, unquestionably platonic. And, more importantly, trust Alice to meet a guy who also happened to be from San Francisco. Ashley was definitely going to have to meet him soon so she could give him a stamp of approval.
“Well, you know who came from Chicago?” she realised suddenly, nudging Alice. “Fall Out Boy!”
She knew Alice’s music taste inside and out.
It was great to see Audrey accept their offer. She was likely a little overwhelmed by the two of them – Ashley knew they were a high-energy pair at the best of times – so it was a relief to see her accept, even if she did seem to have some reservations. Hopefully now she’d finished her ice cream the sugar would perk her up.
“There’s so much going on here, I bet we can find something fun for you to check out!”

A Taste of Home Chicago was on McKenna Chase’s list of upcoming shows, but Ashley held back from mentioning that. After all, she was beginning to need the classic celebrity disguise of a cap and large sunglasses more and more. That Audrey didn’t seem to recognise her could only be a good thing, and Ashley wasn’t about to go jogging her memory. She didn’t want to taint Audrey’s impressions of her as a human by making the connection to her as a performer.
Still, she nodded and smiled at Alice’s enthusiasm for Chicago’s reputation for pizza, watching Audrey’s face eagerly to see if the pizza lived up to Alice’s dreams.
“That’s cool!” she said, as Audrey mentioned her profession. “Travelling for work is always a great bonus, huh?”
The vague allusion to her own career tumbled out before she’d really thought about it, but it was just the right amount of vague that it didn’t exactly give anything away. From the brief pause in her speech, maybe Audrey had something to hide herself anyway, which was a little intriguing but absolutely not something Ashley was about to pry into.
She wasn’t sure if the ‘what about you?’ had been directed at the both of them or just Alice, but the conversation seemed to move swiftly onto the topic of Alice’s ambitions as a chef. Ashley was more than happy to discuss such things – she was probably Alice’s number one cheerleader when it came to her cooking skills.
“She’ll definitely be big someday, I bet,” Ashley said proudly, casting a look at Alice at the force-feeding comment. The both of them followed fairly carefully balanced diets at the moment, but Alice knew Ashley was always down to break it if it meant a chance at tasting some of Alice’s new experiments in the kitchen.
“Yeah, it would be no problem at all!” she agreed with a friendly beam. Ashley was always down for exploring her city.

A Taste of Home Ashley wriggled back away from Alice’s advancing mum-hand but was unsuccessful. Living together had really erased many boundaries they might have had previously in their friendship, although Ashley considered Alice’s thumb-lick a step too far. She giggled all the same, shaking her head with a bemused smile.
“It’s good, right?” she asked, holding up her ice cream to Alice. “If you found something chewy, I swear it’s not boogers. Real strawberry, look!”
She pulled herself away from the heavily domestic situation, feeling rude, and was relieved to see that the previously scowling, dark-haired girl had both the ability to smile and a sense of humour. Ashley’s own smile grew in response, especially as Audrey dismissed the idea of her being a klutz, and she turned to follow her gaze.
“Oh, that moment definitely won’t be making its way to Instagram,” she commented with a laugh. There was no malice in her tone, although you could be forgiven for thinking that was the case. Ashley had actually had to start thinking more and more about the public view of her own actions and, although she wasn’t heavily into social media, the concepts of maintaining a certain image had definitely started to creep into her thoughts a little.
She smacked at Alice as she heavily exaggerated Ashley’s ineptitude in the kitchen.
“Hey! We both know the reason you don’t let me near the kitchen knives is because you’re terrified I’ll actually offer to cook you dinner.” She cast a playfully dramatic, sorrowful look at Audrey. “Chef roomie struggles.”
Ashley continued to eat her ice cream as she listened to Audrey’s response to Alice’s question. She glanced up occasionally to show she really was very interested in what their new friend had to say, but she was also really enjoying this ice cream.
