Family Reunion She didn’t know how seriously he meant that he was more than capable of affording concert tickets, but the news was reassuring. It meant that he wasn’t wasting away without food – although she wouldn’t be surprised if he’d supplemented his diet for coffee – or shelter, penniless in some dangerous and crime-ridden alleyway. Will had always been good at standing on his own two feet, Ashley greatly admired his strength and independence, but the last year or so had dealt him a heavy hand that would have knocked down many.
“Oh, well in that case, how come you didn’t spring for VIP, huh? Don’t you want me to succeed? Or were you specifically trying to avoid a meet-and-greet situation…”
She folded her arms, though she wasn’t able to look particularly stern.
What else was reassuring to hear was the way he was trying to joke with her. He seemed a little uneasy with it, just as anybody would be when faced with their younger sister after a year of radio silence. But he was trying and that meant the world to Ashley.
“I know. You’re such a softie,” she said with a grin. “Do I get any kinda explanation? You just dropped off the radar – mom and dad didn’t know, Alice didn’t know, I didn’t know where you were.” It had happened just gradually enough that it had seemed to be Will’s choice, rather than something more sinister going on, but the fact remained that he hadn’t actually announced to anyone where he was going, for how long or why. He’d just… gone.
“Is this the first time you’ve seen me on-stage since you disappeared? Or have you been secretly tailing me the entire time?” She frowned, worried that she might have missed past opportunities to find out if her big brother was okay or not.

'a' is for amity “Mutual fangirlism,” Ashley insisted with a grin, applying her own make-believe badge.
She wondered if Ari was also a fan of Paladin. It was pretty likely – Paladin was the celebrity superhero, especially in San Francisco. Unless Ari was a secret super-villain, she probably knew of Paladin as the brave beacon of hope that everyone else did. However, Alice was not Paladin right now. Alice was Alice and so there wasn’t about to be a full-blown triangle of fan-girling, no matter how closely Alice’s hair matched that of her alter-ego.
“It really is such a small world! Does your apartment face the street too? We’d totally be able to wave at each other,” she giggled, a little over-enthusiastic in her discovery that Ari lived so close to them. Ashley just really, inexplicably enjoyed the idea of being able to spot a friendly face from her own window.
Ashley chuckled. “So noble of you to keep the fast food chains afloat, Ari. Like Alice says, we try our best to help out the local economy. Takeout pizza is just the best pizza, plus we all have our lazy days.” Her stomach rumbled gently, a low, gurgling reminder of the feast that they were about to consume.
“Ex-bartender huh? I can definitely trust your judgement. Should we buy some soda to go with this?”
As Ashley turned to look for something that would mix with Ari’s selection, she heard Alice invite her to the girls’ night. Ashley had already asked her earlier so at least Ari would definitely be feeling wanted by the pair. She turned with a smile to signal her agreement.
“For sure! Why not? You could at least just come over for a little to sample some of the snacks Alice is going to cook up for us. It’s not like you have far to go home,” she added with a shrug, grinning with amusement. She liked Ari and it would be fun for the three of them to sit around the apartment enjoying tasty snacks and drinking exciting drinks for a little – it gave Ashley the chance to get to know Ari outside of the more business-like offer to feature in performances, and Ashley was all about making friends.

'a' is for amity Ashley shoved gently at Alice. “Stoooop, you’re making me sound like a crazy fan girl.” She paused, locked eyes suddenly with Ari, and winked. “Which, of course, I totally am. That red jacket owns my heart.” Never one to exaggerate. Ashley, dramatic? Never!
“It’s crazy that we just happened to run into each other so soon,” she agreed. Ashley let Alice explain that yes, of course they were frequent patrons of Hal’s Mart. Alice did sometimes have more specialist shops that she liked to go to for certain ingredients but, when it came to the basics like chocolate and alcohol, Hal’s more than satisfied.
“Don’t tell me you come here all the time too? Our building’s literally just over there-” Ashley gestured vaguely in the direction of their flat. “-so this is our go-to for girls’ night fuel.”
Ashley cracked up at Ari’s ‘I cook, I burn, I hunger’ quip. She emphasised greatly with Ari’s kitchen struggles, although she took offence at Alice’s insinuation that Ashley was forbidden from approaching a hot stove. Alice ducked away, with good reason, but Ashley decided a simple glare would suffice. “Hey, I’m learning,” she protested sulkily. “I have like… at least two dishes that I can make consistently without burning the food, myself or the equipment. I consider that progress!”
She smiled happily as Ari joined them in their meander towards the alcohol section. “Yeah, fun drinks! We usually go for anything bubbly but I’m open to suggestions. Although maybe nothing too strong, else I’ll like… die.”
Ashley continued to be as lowkey and undramatic as ever.
They stood before Hal’s selection of fun drinks, Ashley stroking her chin as though deep in thought. “Hmm… whatcha think Ari?”

A Big Apple a Day... “Perfect,” Ashley said, a confident smile on her face. “Once you’ve consumed and digested your feast we can head out. You got a good idea of where to go first?”
‘We like boredom’ – Ashley had never thought that would be a positive aspect of a workplace, but she supposed that would be the case when a flurry of activity meant queues of patients needing medical attention. The only part of Ashley’s job that she found boring was sitting on a tour bus or a plane. Even then, she and the crew usually managed to make it a little entertaining. Or she caught up on sleep; never a bad thing.
“Boy, I’ll say. It’s good food here, too. Might as well enjoy as much of it as you can. My soup has been just what the doctor ordered!”
She’d made her way through most of it now, but she’d tried to slow down to keep pace with the enormity of Senri’s meal. It was a gentle balance between losing the warmth, and therefore tastiness, of her soup and not being left to sit there and stare enviously as Senri enjoyed the rest of her lunch.
A professional! Of course that was what Ashley was, but she liked hearing it all the same. “It is awesome! If you’re not working this weekend I bet there’s still a few tickets for my shows, if you wanted to come along?”
She grinned in agreement at the idea of a relaxing hike around New York. “Suits me just fine – I’m happy to put in the miles so long as I don’t have to think of the route. If I tire myself out just right then I should be able to just collapse into my bed at the end of the night which is always the best.”
A hotel bed wasn’t quite like her own, but it was the next best thing.

family reunion The second he turned around and started walking back to her – of course he would, she knew he would – Ashley backed up from the door and beckoned for him to follow. Better to be in this rather secret little corridor than out in front of the venue where she was sure to be overwhelmed by selfie requests in a matter of seconds. The fact that that hadn’t happened already was a miracle and Ashley wasn’t fancying the idea of pushing her luck on that one.
“It’s been a while?” she repeated incredulously, eyeing him with a look that may have made lesser men wither. “I’ll say!”
The stern expression gave way to unending affection, softening suddenly, and she held out her arms for a hug.
“I’m sorry, you’re right. It has been a while and I don’t wanna scare you off so soon,” she said with a wry smile. Ashley took a step back to look at her brother properly, trying not to look too concerned by what she saw. He was alive, he was talking to her – that was important. “I’ve been good,” she added, answering his question. “Really good, actually. I don’t know how many of my messages got through to you, but life has been pretty kind to me lately.”
She laughed, not really sure where to begin.
“Did you watch the whole show?” She smiled with a shake of her head. “Dude, you are such a dummy, if you’d come to me before I would’ve got you a ticket myself! Backstage passes, you name it.” Ashley grinned playfully. “I hope it was worth the trip. From… wherever you are now.”
Will had cut himself off from everybody after the Event and, unfortunately for Ashley, he was the kind of man who couldn’t be found unless he wanted you to find him. For all she knew, he could have been secretly following her whole tour this entire time and living in an apartment across the hall. Probably unlikely, she decided, but she also couldn’t quite bring herself to put it past him.
“I missed you.”
She punched at his arm softly, trying to reel the situation in from becoming too serious. From the look on his face, Will could use a little less seriousness and fortunately Ashley was quite the expert in such things.

'a' is for amity Having been swaying towards the idea of alcoholic drinks herself, Ashley was pleased with Alice’s suggestion of drinks. She’d recognised a few of the guys on the checkouts and so they knew they wouldn’t have any trouble with ID. Alice and Ashley were pretty regular customers and the staff here either didn’t know or didn’t care that only one of them was 21. At this point, Alice could probably buy drink herself, even though Ashley always liked to do so as a precautionary measure.
She started for the alcohol section when she suddenly heard her name from a voice that was oddly familiar, and yet she couldn’t quite place it… Ashley turned slowly, just in case they were shouting for a different Ashley, and immediately spotted the bright red jacket and lopsided grin.
Alice prodded her as Ari came up to them and Ashley nodded before bursting into a huge, welcoming smile. “Hi, Ari! Long time no see! This is my roomie, Alice. Alice, this is the illusionist I was telling you about.”
She took a moment to survey the food Ari had obtained for herself, an approving grin settling into her features. She could only assume that Ari was here to buy dinner-for-one – and she was more than welcome to join the two of them if she fancied a less lonely evening. Still, Ashley decided against extending an invitation just in case it scared her off. She’d already kind of invited her earlier anyway.
“We’re buying supplies for Alice to work her chef magic on,” Ashley explained, gesturing to the basket which seemed rather overloaded with chocolate. “And now we’re on the hunt for some drinks to go with! You got any recommendations?” They started making their way down the aisle as they spoke, Ashley still reeling with the exciting coincidence of it all.

A Big Apple a Day... Senri was such a playful person, she clearly had no qualms in teasing Ashley about her athletic ability. The confidence reflected the fact that she was probably extremely capable herself, which was definitely impressive. Although she looked in good shape, the girl wasn’t exactly superhumanly strong-looking, nor was she very tall. Probably shorter than Ashley, actually, which was a feat in itself. She was obviously one of those extremely toned people whose muscles were almost understated from far away and when hidden under clothing but was definitely tougher than she first seemed.
“Aw hey, don’t go too easy on me, dude, I love a challenge!” She grinned. “I’ll do as much walking as it takes to see the sights. If I’ve gotta run a few blocks, so be it.”
Emergency medicine? That definitely sounded like a challenging career choice. “Oh gosh, what a job. You must see it all in the city – is that why you need such a huge lunch? To keep you going in the ER?”
She hoped she didn’t seem rude for pointing out the size of Senri’s lunch, but it was in pretty stark contrast to her own.
“And yah, I’m a musician for fun – but also for my job!” she explained excitedly. “That’s why I’m here – I’m doing some publicity work, that sorta thing… and some shows on the weekend! It’s gonna be such a blast,” Ashley said with a huge beam across her face. “I’ve been up since like 4am which was pretty gross, but I’ve been given the afternoon to relax. Apparently hiking around the city is the closest I get to relaxing.” She laughed at herself, shaking her head.
When you had as much energy as Ashley had, the prospect of spending her whole day “relaxing” and just passing time doing nothing in her hotel room was not something she really even entertained. She could have put on a good movie, she supposed, but she’d have still felt the need to escape eventually. Her plans for exploring New York were a much better alternative. So long as Senri didn’t have her running laps of Manhattan, she’d probably be okay.

'a' is for amity “You might need to use your superpowers to help me out of bed in the morning,” Ashley said with a laugh, a little softly in case anyone happened to be eavesdropping. Getting blasted across the room was not the ideal solution, but if Ashley’s tired limbs weren’t cooperating then it was her best hope at actually escaping the clutches of her bed sheets. “Or cook something that smells reeeeally good.”
That one had actually worked on a few occasions. Alice rarely submitted to Ashley’s demands for breakfast in bed and sometimes the smells from the kitchen were just so enticing.
“That sounds like her, I think the red jacket is kinda her thing,” Ashley said, nodding. “And hey, she is really good! You know me, I always wanna step things up in fun ways – I think gorgeous, visual magic would be a great addition to live shows. I have her email so we’ll see what the team thinks, I guess. Hopefully at least someone will be on board, my crazy ideas never get off the ground unless somebody at the table has my back and can translate them into profit-ese.”
Ashley rolled her eyes. She was definitely eager for success in the music industry, and had done well with it, but there were some parts to her job which were definitely not so fun. Hanging out with street performers and playing remixes in clubs with DJs? Much more fun than talking numbers.
Chocolate was a great idea. Ashley hummed with enthusiastic agreement as Alice loaded some into the basket. “She seemed pretty excited! We didn’t really have time to talk about anything specific but she said ‘Til we meet again’ so like, she seems down to at least discuss it again in the future,” she explained happily.
Ashley peered into the basket. “Yes, they were delicious! We should grab some drinks too… are you feeling like drinks or drinks?”
She eyed up the selection of alcohol that she could see from the aisle, turning to Alice with a shrug. She didn’t mind either way – sometimes it was fun when the two of them had silly nights with sparkling wine and a bountiful supply of treats from Alice’s kitchen. She handed the responsibility of making a decision – as she so often did – over to her roommate.

'a' is for amity Pushing through the door to the shop, Ashley noticed gleefully that Alice had already made straight for the snacks.
“Oh, it was a toughie – every part of my body is probably gonna be hurting tomorrow but it’s worth it if it means we can go wild tonight.” She shared a knowing grin with Alice – the other girl could definitely understand the toil of a hard gym session. Probably more so than Ashley herself, in fact. Heroes needed to be physically fit, and Alice seemed determined to be the athletic role model of the Program. Even without her powers, the girl was still really, really tough.
“And yah, I got delayed on my way home,” she explained, walking slowly down the aisle now and looking for anything that wasn’t too terrible for her diet that might also be immensely satisfying. It was a difficult standard to meet. “There was a road closure so I went a different route – met this awesome street performer, have you ever seen her?”
Ashley turned to face Alice, gesturing, “She’s got a top hat like, yay-high.” Maybe she should invest in a top hat herself. It would definitely boost her height. “And this absolutely beautiful red jacket that I totally want. She was doing a magic show with all these illusion tricks, it was so neat.”
She shrugged. “So I accidentally got talking to her and now I’m going to try and get her on-stage sometime – what do you think?”
The question was multi-layered. Ashley was interested simultaneously in what Alice thought of hiring a street performer for McKenna Chase, and in which snacks the girl would recommend. After that gym session, Ashley’s stomach would be content with just about any food product under the sun.

kiss and tell Ashley scooped a hefty amount of avocado into her mouth. “If Friday’s good for you, and good for him, then it sounds pretty great to me.”
She’d hoped that Alice might have already enquired about Nate’s schedule while Ashley was grabbing herself a snack, but it seemed Alice wasn’t quite confident enough yet to make such moves without some reassurance.
“You can suggest a questionable motel out of town if you like,” she teased, “But I’m sure he’ll be happy to hear that you want to go out for dinner. Just be straight up with him, it’ll be fine. It’s only dinner, you’re not asking him for his hand in marriage. Yet.”
Ashley felt pretty secure in her advice – she wasn’t pushing Alice towards any kind of commitment in the slightest, but if an invite to dinner was enough to scare the guy off then he probably wasn’t worth their time. If he knew about Alice’s excellent taste in food then there was almost no way he could say no, unless he had some kind of late-night MNRU shift. Even then, he should probably try and get out of it – Alice’s refined palate was second to none.
“I can make myself busy on Friday night, I promise.” She couldn’t picture her schedule, but she was probably already busy – she just didn’t know it. Alice was sure to feel more comfortable knowing that she had an empty apartment to return to; alone or otherwise.

'a' is for amity It wasn’t exactly surprising that somebody who made their living in such an unconventional way didn’t have a stack of business cards or an agency to point Ashley in the direction of. Clearly there wasn’t going to be any “I’ll have my people talk to your people” going on here. She smiled genially as Ari’s voice quietened, hoping she hadn’t put her in too awkward of a situation by asking for a card.
“Email address is great! Here, you can-”
Ashley had reached into her bag with the intention of searching for her phone that was safely secured in one of the internal pockets. Which internal pocket that was exactly was always a game of pocket roulette. She stopped, however, when she realised Ari was having a search of her own pockets, triumphantly producing a pencil.
“Old school! Nice,” she commented with a grin. Ashley took the makeshift business card and only had to squint a little to wrap her head around the handwriting. “J Chandler, right?” she asked, just to clarify. Feeling proud of herself for having deciphered the words, Ashley tucked it into her bag, waving away Ari’s concerns that it was too informal. If there was one thing Ashley definitely wasn’t, it was a snob.
“No problem!” she said cheerfully. “I’ll be in touch – I have your business card safe in my bag.” Ashley patted it lightly. “Nice meeting you! Can’t wait to catch your show again some time.”
Ashley returned the salute with an amused smile, watching as Ari marched off down the street. She turned her attention back to retrieving her phone, taking a few moments to send Alice a text before she started to walk herself.
GIRLS NIGHT 😘👯🥂 wanna come pick up some supplies from the store? i’m nearly home 😘😘😘
There was a shop just by Alice and Ashley’s building which would cater to their needs. Ashley, of course, would have to do the alcohol purchasing solo if required, but she always liked to have Alice there to help in the decision-making process. Alice was also a great bad influence in picking up snacks at the same time, and Ashley had deliberately made her gym session today a more gruelling due to this very fact.
She wandered slowly towards the shop to give Alice as much time to respond and make her way there as possible. She took the opportunity to transfer Ari’s email address into her contacts as she walked – conscious that the scrap of paper was maybe not the best business card to rely on staying intact.

Family Reunion Ashley liked performing around the Bay Area; it always felt like a homecoming no matter where she went. San Francisco was her absolute favourite, of course, but she’d spent much of her childhood all around North California. Tonight she was in the Fox Theatre in Oakland which was a pretty great building to look at in Ashley’s eyes. She particularly liked the dome and the general Eastern vibe to the place, as well as the relatively small capacity of just under 3000 seats. It made for a fun show.
Tonight had gone particularly well because Ashley’s experiments with the setlist seemed to be paying off. The crowd was electric and, while the bright lights kept her from seeing the entire audience all at once, she was reflecting the energy right back at them with every song. Even as she reached a slow song, faces were locked on her with her fans hanging off of every word. As she thanked them endlessly following her final encore of the night, Ashley found herself almost moved to tears.
“I’ve been McKenna Chase, thank you and good night!”
She made to leave the stage but hung back to cast her eyes across the room now that the house lights had been brought back on, her smile broadening as her gaze swept across the excited faces. Just as she was about to disappear behind the black curtain, she spotted an unusual tall figure – their stillness almost unnerving in contrast to the excitable young fans around them – at the back of the theatre.
For some reason, maybe the elation in her heart combined with the inevitable hope that her own lyrics always instilled in her, Ashley thought her dreams were coming true. Maybe, finally, after being bombarded with texts, he had given into her pleas.
Although she was being ushered into the dressing room, Ashley couldn’t let this opportunity disappear. She ripped the mic pack from herself, offering apologies and breathless attempts at half-explanations, and then rushed out of the backstage door.
Everyone was already spilling out of the venue, some held up by the allure of merchandise but most out on the street. She cracked open the outer door, adjacent to the box office, which led backstage and peered out, eyes peeled for a tall man who definitely did not look like your average Chaser… ah-ha!
“Will!” she hissed loudly as he emerged from the building. She caught him mid-stride and watched as he stopped in his tracks. She beckoned him over, still barely poking her head out of the gap in the door as she did her best not to draw attention to herself. “If you walk away from me I swear I will tell mom you want an arranged marriage,” she added threateningly.

kiss and tell Returning Alice’s glare with an innocent smile, Ashley giggled to herself.
“Well duh, that’s the only reason anyone becomes anything famous. I know my stage outfits aren’t as glitzy as a superhero costume but I have my fun too,” she said, grinning. “And the amount of make-up they pile onto my face is like a whole dress-up experience in itself!”
Ashley felt bad for making Alice blush at the idea of the French restaurant being too romantic – she hadn’t even been trying to tease her that time. “No way is it too much, the rich boy’s probably been raised on that kind of thing since he was a baby. Well… actually, it probably won’t have been as nice as the food at the place that you’ve found, but I don’t think he’d raise an eyebrow at a French restaurant. I didn’t think the vibe wasn’t cringey and romantic when we went there – it’s too cool for that.”
She was trying her best to reassure Alice, even though the two of them both knew that Ashley was definitely not the poster child for establishing long-term relationships and was probably not qualified to give anyone relationship advice.
Ashley pulled her phone from her pocket and pretend to tap at it manically. “BRB, just cancelling all my shows and moving my bedding onto the sofa.” She caught Alice’s eye. “I promise I wouldn’t make it weird, I’d hide in my bedroom really. Or uh… maybe go stay at my parents’,” she added, remembering their shared wall suddenly and not really wanting to think about it.
She peered at the screen.
“He’s trying to start an in-joke with you, he is so into you,” she proclaimed. “If he didn’t care, or if he was only in it for the …you know, then he’d just text you a time, date and the address of some shady motel.” Ashley was exaggerating greatly here, but Alice would probably know better than to take her seriously about such things. She clapped her hands. “What nights are you free this week? You should see if your schedules line up… see if he wants a more exciting culinary experience than complimentary peanuts.”
At that, Ashley got to her feet and wandered into the kitchen in search of snacks that she was allowed to have, settling for half an avocado before heading back to the sofa. She squished up next to Alice. “So, what did he say?” she asked, not even pretending not to look over Alice’s shoulder.

'a' is for amity Ashley grinned. “What can I say? I must be some kinda marketing genius – you can have that one for free,” she said with a cheesy wink. She tried to imagine showing up to meetings and declaring that she was going to be in charge of publicity from now on – strangely enough, she decided it was probably best left to the professionals. The sea of red jackets was a beautiful mental picture but it was hard to really figure out how one would implement such an idea in practice.
Still, she liked the spirit of it, and it was certainly an iconic part of Ari’s image. That and the jazzy-looking top hat.
“You think I could pull it off? I’ll start dropping hints to my stylist,” Ashley laughed.
She agreed whole-heartedly with Ari’s suggestion that everybody needed a little spark in this crazy world. It resonated well with her own ideas about what she wanted McKenna Chase’s music to be about. Her songs – particularly the latest album – were often about hope, faith and finding the joy in the everyday. It was probably why they had such a broad appeal.
“Are you serious? I’m serious, that would be awesome! Do you have like… business cards or anything?”
Ashley was not the type to let inspiration run away from her in moments like this. She saw an opportunity – a little spark, as Ari had said – and just like the illusionist she was definitely excited to follow it and see what could come from it.
Ari seemed to want to move on from where they stood which, if her allusions to pickpocketers were true, was fair enough. Ashley peeked down at the watch on her wrist. “Probably a good idea not to stand around here chatting all day,” she admitted with a small frown. “I guess you have other things to do – I’m sorry to keep you! I’m just on the way to meet up with my roommate, you’re welcome to come along too.”
It might have seemed like a throwaway invitation, but Ashley really was enjoying talking to this girl and she knew she’d fit right in with her and her equally dorky roomie. She was sure Ari had better things to do than hang out with random strangers but it was always worth offering, just in case.

Kiss and tell Ashley snorted. “Oh I see what your daring escape plan was now. I can’t believe you played dress-up in Hero couture to sneak your way out of a party. That is so you!” Her laughter was gentle, affectionate, in full understanding that Alice was not the hugest fan of the celebrity side to her Hero work. She seemed a little more at home throwing punches at villains than she did throwing back punch with rich strangers.
The way Alice was suddenly sat upright tickled Ashley. Her objection was not, it seemed, at the implication of a wedding – merely that Ashley had deigned to assign herself a place in the wedding party. “You’re welcome, I’ll need your input on the bouquets and centrepieces, of course,” she teased.
Ashley happened to think that Nate should think himself lucky to see what the two of them looked like at the gym. Sure, they both tended to work pretty hard and ended up looking pretty shiny, but they generally looked okay. No, how they looked at the gym wasn’t the main concern… “You don’t need to worry about that; the smell, maybe!” She giggled. “So yep, definitely lock him down first.”
Enjoying the applause for a moment, Ashley nodded her head in a lazy imitation of a bow. “You’re not awful!” she exclaimed. “You can do a pretty great ‘Be Our Guest’,” she pointed out.
Alice’s final piece of ammunition flew Ashley’s way. She probably deserved it – and now she had all the pillows too, mwahaha.
“Ah, oui, oui – very romantic!” Ashley said in a half-attempt at a French accent. “That was nice, and definitely a bit of a secret so he probably won’t have been there before. And pfff, if you give me advanced warning then I’m more likely to be sat here on the couch waiting to say hi and be an embarrassing roommate – so I guess that’s up to you,” she grinned.
