The Key to Friendship On the 18th May 2018, exactly three months after Alice moved into the apartment, Ashley and Alice were up late celebrating a huge impending moment in Alice’s career – the launch of the Federal Hero Program. It was going to be officially announced the next day, marking a rise in Paladin’s status from well-loved vigilante to a government-endorsed superhero. The program had been Dominic Weaver’s brainchild and he would continue to act as Alice’s agent, even though he had stepped back from any hero duties himself.
Ashley knew that he was one of the other survivors of the accident that had changed her brother’s life, but she hadn’t really interacted much with the guy or known much about it him beyond his PR prowess. Claire, even less – she and Alice weren’t on good terms – and Persephone, nothing at all. According to Alice, the girl had just dropped off the grid entirely after the Event. As for Mason… He’d lost his life that day. But Alice had only good things to say about the man when she spoke of him.
There were other prominent vigilantes but Paladin appeared to be one of the more well-known. Ashley liked to tease Alice that they were soon going to have to compete against each other in some inane celebrity reality TV show although she’d quickly ruled out cooking shows, for obvious reasons.
Ashley had bought some champagne for the occasion and even bought a couple of fancy champagne flutes to really set the mood. She wasn’t usually one for drinking but she didn’t exactly abstain either. A balanced diet was important, and every good balanced diet included a little champagne from time to time.
“Wanna do the honours?” she asked excitedly, plucking the bottle from the fridge. It had been her dad’s recommendation after she’d asked for something “within budget, but worthy of a superhero” and was probably wasted on her – Ashley was pleased with anything bubbly, regardless of quality – but Alice definitely had a healthy level of food-and-drink snobbishness to accommodate.
She placed the bottle in front of Alice and retrieved the two glasses, setting them down slowly to draw attention to their sophistication. Champagne – in champagne glasses!
“I know,” she said proudly. “We so fancy.”

The Key to Friendship The key-bestowing ceremony had been as elaborate as Ashley could manage with the apartment in its current state. She excused herself for a moment and returned with the sacred sparkly shower curtain draped around her shoulders, Alice’s key held out in front of her. She got Alice to kneel down and then ceremoniously “knighted” her with the key, singing a wordless tune as she went. The curtain slipped off halfway through, but it was otherwise a beautiful and memorable event.
Alice had then proceeded to look through the kitchen and draw up a shopping list for Ashley to follow while she headed back to grab her things. Alice was extremely eager to just move in straightaway, which was both delighting and surprising. Ashley had offered to help her with the moving out process but Alice was insistent on Ashley sticking to her grocery duties. She’d even suggested the perfect places to acquire all the ingredients.
After the whole key ceremony, Ashley was feeling particularly gallant, and considered the gathering mission her noble quest that would serve as the base for their moving-in feast that evening. She let Alice talk her into believing its significance so she didn’t feel too bad about Alice moving all her stuff by herself, but there was still an underlying concern. Maybe Alice was going to call on Stephen for help, or something, and she really really needed Ashley to get those ingredients.
Ashley knew when to pry, and this moment wasn’t one of them.
It took a surprisingly long time to find all the right places – jumping on different buses and asking strangers for directions – but Ashley succeeded completely in her quest and was feeling more than a little smug in her triumph. As though buying groceries was this huge adult task that she’d never done before. In a way, she hadn’t. Not for stocking her own cupboards, anyway.
By the time she got back to the apartment and heaved her hard-earned loot through the door, Alice had already populated the space with some of her own belongings. There really wasn’t much, but Alice’s apartment had been tiny. They were definitely going to need to go furniture shopping.
“Ta-dah! I bring fine wares from the city!” Ashley announced, still rather immersed in her make-believe role. Then she stopped and looked around the room happily, pleased to see it marginally more filled. “Did you move all your things in already?”
She marched through to the kitchen where she began unloading her bags onto the breakfast bar. Alice hadn’t actually told her what she was going to be cooking yet, but Ashley could already feel her stomach rumbling at the prospect. Clearly, Ashley had great taste in roommates.

Lazy Evening “Paul, right?” Ashley clarified, sharpie hovering in the air.
“Love of my life works too,” the frat boy fan said dreamily. “Just sign my face already!”
Ashley really hadn’t thought she’d skyrocketed to face-signing levels of fame, but apparently this six foot something dude emblazoned with Greek letters was an openly enthusiastic fan of happy, melodic country pop. He was currently crouched in front of her so the sharpie could actually reach his forehead, as requested, and Ashley signed a quick ‘McKenna ♥ Paul’ as best she could.
To his credit, Paul immediately backed away – his face still overcome with awe in the same kind of endearing way a six-year-old looked at people dressed as Disney princesses – and left Ashley to navigate her way into the club. It was full to the brim with gaggles of sorority girls, all at various stages of completely-out-of-it, surrounded by plenty of guys in same similar states… maybe even worse. It was exactly what Ashley had expected. She was mostly just here to check in with Dana and Cory, maybe try and catch some other friends depending on who was in attendance.
The place was rammed, so she’d have to find them purely by chance.
As it happened, the first person she ran across was Cory, who was leaning against the bar like she owned it while she waited for a drink. Ashley waved from behind a duo of particularly tall, model-esque girls and slowly pushed her way towards Cory, apologising profusely as she did so.
“Hey!” she said, finally reaching Cory’s side. “You made it!”
Ashley took a second to remember who Cory would be buying spritzers for, and then she grinned understandingly. “Girl has terrible taste in drinks, trust me. She might even think you’ve put something extra in to spice it up. Just put a pretty straw in and it’ll be cool.”
Dana was having the time of her life picking dance battles with unwitting strangers, and Ashley watched as Cory did her best to communicate by improvised sign language. Dana seemed to understand, though she didn’t catch a glimpse of Ashley just yet. Ashley would have realised immediately if she had because alcohol turned Dana’s enthusiastic shrillness setting up to 11. Big time.
“I know right? Adorable,” Ashley laughed, picturing Dana actually pouncing on her like some uncoordinated, inebriated kitten. “And hey, I can never turn down Dana’s invites. Marcus… Uh…” Ashley pondered for a moment – she hadn’t heard from him recently. “He might be here, I dunno. I’ve pretty much arrived, signed a dude’s head and run straight into you! Why, you wanna see him?”
She looked over to check on Dana and realised swiftly that Dana had tired of her waiting for her refreshments and had joined a crowd of people around a table who – judging by the raised hands – were just starting a rousing game of Never Have I Ever.
“Oh man,” Ashley said wryly, nodding her head in Dana’s direction. “You should see this. Dana aaalways loses.”

The Key to Friendship Ashley looked amused.
“A breakfast tray? How fancy. You make an excellent point about the syrup but…” She grinned devilishly at Alice, inching away so that Alice couldn’t so easily smack her. “…Wouldn’t it give me sweet dreams?”
Truthfully, syrup in your bed sounded like a nightmare. Just think of the hair! However, Ashley didn’t want to miss the opportunity to wind Alice up with a terrible pun. The girl was so easy to get – which was maybe not the best thing for Ashley’s health considering how hard the blue-haired heroine packed a punch.
She followed Alice’s lead, standing up and making their way back into the main space so that Alice could give the kitchen a more thorough inspection now it wasn’t obscured in a smog of jealousy. It really was a nice room – so open and light, pleasant even with the piles of boxes littered around the place. Furnishing it was going to be so fun but so hard. It was important to Ashley that it looked just right.
“Dude, haven’t you seen the boxes?” Ashley exclaimed, arms spreading wide. “Deposit and first month’s rent are down, we live here now!”
She reached into the nearest box and pulled out the first thing she could get her hands on (a book about post-tonal music theory) and placed it arbitrarily onto the sofa. It was a poor demonstration, but nonetheless she was trying her best to illustrate that move-in day was now.
Ashley quietly tucked the book back in the box – not ready to tackle unpacking that heaving monstrosity just yet – and smiled cheerfully.
“You can move in whenever you want. My stuff is here, I just need to buy more furniture. I’m gonna slowly move in over the next couple of days and bam!” Ashley raised a triumphant fist. “I’ll be an independent city girl with a hella nice apartment and the coolest roomie in the universe. We’ll definitely need to throw a party,” she added with a sudden gasp of realisation. “And invite the neighbours! Who knows, maybe they’ll be cute.”
Ashley winked.

The Key to Friendship Ashley did her best to hide her jubilation at Alice’s decisiveness, instead opting to peer jealously through the doorway at Alice who was already making herself at home on the rather creaky bed. She looked the room up and down, eyeing the extra window with excessive envy.
“Awww no fair, you picked the best one,” she pouted. “But… I guess you can make it up to me with breakfast-in-bed some time, right? And I want pancakes,” Ashley added with a jab of her finger. “Fluffy ones.”
She joined Alice on the bed, acutely aware of how bare the room seemed.
“Will you need help moving your stuff? Or is your old place furnished?” Ashley gasped suddenly, looking excited. “We should do an IKEA trip! Or, or, like a thrift store hunt for used furniture, or something.” She looked excitedly at Alice. “I need some new stuff anyway seeing as I can’t just take all my folks’ furniture. Rude, right?”
Ashley was secretly glad that her parents were insisting on keeping her room as hers, rather than turning it into a gym or office as some empty-nesters were prone to doing. She’d claimed a few essentials – the glittery shower curtain, her stuffed animals, her music and audio equipment, her favourite bedspread – but had left enough there to keep the space distinctly Ashley-esque.
She’d also promised to visit lots. Equally, she’d made them promise to attend some of her out-of-town shows so she could treat them to a VIP experience. What was the point of having a famous singer as your child if you didn’t capitalise on the fancy hotel rooms? Okay, maybe McKenna wasn’t quite at the stage of fancy hotel rooms all day, everyday. She could dream.

The Key to Friendship Halfway through the motions of throwing herself at Alice, Ashley stumbled to a halt as the hand was swiftly raised before her. She raised an eyebrow, more than a little worried that Alice was going to take it back, and so was pleasantly surprised by Alice’s generous insistence that she do all the cooking in the flat. As if Ashley was going to turn around and demand that she demonstrate her excellent microwaving skills.
“Paladin, my hero – I need you to do all the cooking. Having you as a roomie is what convinced my mom and dad that I wasn’t going to move out and immediately die of malnutrition,” she added jokingly.
There was probably a grain of truth to that, however. As the darling baby of the family, Ashley was definitely coddled by her parents and they hadn’t been completely enthusiastic at the prospect of her moving out until they realised that she wouldn’t be living alone. They knew, as did she, that Ashley was an incredibly social creature and probably would have driven herself insane all alone. It was unlikely that she’d be spending much time at the apartment as it was – impending headline tour and all else that came with being McKenna Chase – but it felt good to know that when she did return to it there would be her a best friend and a gourmet meal waiting for her.
Probably – unless Paladin was off rescuing kids from burning buildings or something.
Ashley finally got her hug, dancing on the spot.
“Okay,” she said, business face on as she pulled back from the hug. “Now – as your roommate I gotta let you know that I haven’t claimed a bedroom yet, and it’s driving me crazy trying to decide.” She laughed at the ridiculousness of it. “Pur-lease tell me you have a preference?”
She smiled apologetically. It wasn’t her fault the rooms were so damn similar – how was a girl supposed to choose?

The Key to Friendship The journey of emotions travelled across Alice’s face in no time at all, but it had been slow enough that Ashley had allowed herself to get excited at Alice’s more joyful reaction. She’d begun to rise to her feet but, upon Alice’s sudden mood change, had dropped back to the ground with an ungraceful thud. She frowned.
“You can’t?”
It wasn’t specifically that she didn’t want to. Alice wasn’t so tactless as to make that obvious anyway. The way she’d phrased it and the initial euphoria that had begun spreading across her features showed that it wasn’t a case of lacking desire, but ability.
Ashley didn’t want to make it too obvious, but she guessed it was probably money. She hadn’t told Alice how much this place cost and it definitely was on a whole different level to Alice’s tiny little studio that Ashley had poked her nose around a couple of times all that time ago. It had been months since she’d seen it – maybe Alice had found somewhere else and not told her. More likely, however, was that her budget hadn’t changed all that much and she was just reluctant to even consider this apartment in case it was out of her reach.
In fairness, it probably was, but Ashley was willing to split the rent rather unevenly in exchange for the delight of having her best friend as a roommate.
“It would mean a lot to me if you would consider it,” she said eventually, still sat on the floor amongst her teddies. Ashley was struggling to think of how to persuade Alice without actively making an overtly charitable offer. “The deposit’s already covered so like, no rush,” she explained. “I just really don’t want to live alone and, while I could afford to… I just figured that it would be nice for me to live with my best friend. You know?”
She pulled a toy monkey close to her, setting it in her lap and smiling hesitantly up at Alice. “If there’s any issues I can help with, you know I will. Pleeeease?”

The Key to Friendship It was all at once relieving and exhilarating as Alice’s face lit up upon entering the apartment. Ashley was beginning to wish that she’d unpacked a little further than she had so that Alice could really appreciate the space, but it seemed like Alice was easily able to visualise the apartment’s potential as she made her way through the rooms. Her reaction to the kitchen was definitely worth the wait.
The two bedrooms were equal in size, although one of them had an extra window and the other had nicer flooring. Ashley was hoping to leave Alice up to the decision-making on that side of things. Or maybe they could toss a coin. Rock, paper, scissors – loser has to choose their bedroom. It was a good thing they were virtually identical, really.
Ashley’s heart sank when Alice finally turned back round to face her, brow furrowed. She didn’t look like she’d fallen in love with the place after all. In fact, once she asked her question, it became apparent that Alice didn’t even consider herself a candidate for the spare room. Maybe Ashley should have made more of an effort to unpack and make the place more homely. So far, she’d only managed her instruments, her laptop and her childhood stuffed toys. (She just couldn’t leave them crammed into a box; it wasn’t fair on them).
“Oh,” Ashley said quickly, nudging at the pile of stuffed animals with her foot. “I figured these guys could do with a space of their own!” Her joking was an attempt to deflect from the disappointment she knew had flashed across her face – an expression which quickly shifted to horror as one of her teddies tumbled from the summit.
Ashley bent down swiftly to arrange the pile into a less precarious form.
“No, well…” She kept her eyes on her work. “I don’t have one yet, but I kinda had… Like… I kinda thought maybe you would like to live here?”
She looked up hopefully at this point.
“The rent’s great and the area’s great and, and c’mon – the kitchen!”
If that wouldn’t sell this place to Alice, then nothing would. She knew it was asking a lot – Alice lived on her own, and maybe actually preferred it that way, and the fact that she was genuinely confused as to who Ashley was planning to live with suggested that she hadn’t been planning on moving anytime soon. But, hey, Ashley was throwing her best pitch at her – and it even included the kitchen sink.

The Key to Friendship There was a nervous flutter in Ashley’s chest as she waited for Alice to make the quick journey across town. Although she knew that Alice would love the place, it was still something that they’d only discussed in fantastical, hypothetical conversations. Why yes, we would make amazing roommates! Sure, I am also a big fan of kitchen islands and open-plan living spaces! Wouldn’t it be fun if we lived together?
She wasn’t even sure what was going on right now for Alice in terms of living arrangements – she’d stayed at hers for a little while but then she’d stopped, so Ashley had figured that whatever had been keeping her out of her apartment had been solved, but then she hadn’t actually visited Alice in her apartment for a long time. They’d both been busy, true, but it wasn’t like they hadn’t hung out at Ashley’s. Maybe it was because Ashley’s mum was so fond of Alice – her enthusiasm was enough to make anyone feel welcome.
Ashley gasped internally, Alice was secretly set on being besties with her mother! She took a moment to giggle at her own silliness, and then Alice’s text came through to signal her arrival.
Are you outside the building? I’ll buzz you in. Go up to the fourth floor and look out for number 16. She followed her text up by a series of progressively wilder and more abstract expressions of excitement, then slid off the barstool to go and wait excitedly by the door. The flat was still pretty bare – it came with some furnishings, like the beds and the stools, but it was still a way off from feeling like home. Hopefully Alice could help out with the decorating, if she could tear herself away from the shiny kitchen.
Finally she heard a knock, yanking the door open before Alice could even finish.
“Surprise!”
Ashley threw her arms wide, backing into the space so Alice could see inside. “I wish I had confetti, but these will have to do.” She waved her arms enthusiastically. “What do you think? It’s hella nice, right?”
It was impossible not to notice the catch of concern in Ashley’s voice there. Please like it here.

Lazy Evening Ashley pouted softly, disappointed at the fact that Cory hadn’t mentioned any straws. Maybe Dana reserved her bouquets for those she was more serious about. From what Ashley could put together, Cory saw the whole thing as no strings, and Dana was barely acknowledging that it was a “thing” at all to begin with.
Cory’s reaction to the “revelation” that Ashley had been acting was definitely confusing. Such a drama queen. Ashley watched as all the tension in her face dropped… then all the tension in her body followed suit. Cory slid down onto the ground – poor Nugget heavily disturbed by what must have felt like a sudden landslide – and just buried her face into the carpet.
“Um-”
Suddenly she realised the muffled noises were Cory attempting to speak, and she leaned forwards to try and pick up the words.
“She is pretty,” Ashley agreed happily, laughing. “Dana likes being told that,” she added with a fond smirk. “Must be why she likes you.”
She waved reservedly at Nugget, who was looming close to her. She hoped he wasn’t about to climb all over her. The snacks were a little too far out of reach to distract him, unfortunately, but he didn’t seem poised to make the big leap from Cory to her. She shuffled an inch backwards, just in case.
“Woah woah, you don’t need my permission – what do I care?” Ashley asked, the confusion returning. “We’ve established I’m not her mom and – hey, Coryelle.” She bent closer so that Cory could look her in the eyes. “I believe you. If I thought you were a super terrible person, do you really think I’d be sitting here right now?”
She leaned back, flipping through her notebook. “I suppose I could just be using you for your mad producing skills,” she said drily, peeking over to see Cory’s reaction. “Kidding!”
Ashley looked at Cory for a moment. “So do you like… need help getting up? ‘Cause I think your head is an inch away from some stray salsa and I’d really hate for you to roll the wrong way.” She giggled, following the laughter up by making some super mature squelchy noises with her mouth as she pictured Cory accidentally planting her face in a rogue splatter of salsa.

The Key to Friendship In so many ways the world had been turned upside down in the last six months and, yet, the wheels of Ashley’s own personal sphere of existence just kept on turning undisturbed. Actually, things seemed to have shifted up a gear or two, and Ashley was feeling more and more like she wasn’t actually in the driver’s seat at all but was perfectly delighted to experience the rush as a passenger.
The album had been put together in the almost immediate aftermath of the Event. There was an obvious hesitancy about going forwards with publicity and release in the new, uncertain world that was forming around them, but Ashley had pushed for a quick release. The album was heavy in songs about faith and hope, and the lead single was so incredibly well-received that McKenna Chase had gone from minor internet phenomenon to regular airplay practically overnight.
She wasn’t topping the charts or being hailed as the new Adele, or whatever, but she had certainly been thrown headfirst into a whole new realm of fame and notoriety. People were buying her music, eagerly anticipating the album, and when it was eventually released a month later Ashley found herself with a whole new fanbase teeming with demand for a tour.
Thankfully her manager was giving her a little breathing room and letting her have a solid few weeks of down-time after all the beautiful chaos that had surrounded her album release. Supposedly, with McKenna Chase’s new success, they couldn’t afford to break her. Time to rest and recover was certainly much appreciated, even if it did speak volumes of all the hard work and excitement that loomed in her near future.
For now, though, Ashley was doing her best to just be Ashley. She was catching up with friends, spending quality time with her parents and taking the opportunity to reconnect more consciously with God. It had been a good two weeks so far and, as her freedom drew to a close, Ashley had finally bitten the bullet and put down for a two-bed apartment in the city. Nothing fancy, but nothing cheap, either. It was perfect for a first place, really, and missing only one important detail: a roommate.
Of course she had thought about advertising the spare room but she didn’t think putting her address out there was a great idea. That, and the room had already belonged to someone else the second she’d laid eyes on it. Or – more accurately – when she’d first laid eyes on the kitchen.
Her phone buzzed, and Ashley smiled with gentle amusement at the message on the screen.
Sounds like fighting talk, missy!
She tapped mindlessly against the side of her phone, wondering how to segue.
This town ain’t big enough for the both of us. Meet me at this address, and bring your abs! It’s showtime!

The Lie-in King “No, no,” Ashley protested, Alice’s yawns setting her off again. She didn’t even try to cover it up this time, and it was a pretty big one.
She finally burrowed her head into the pillow at just the right angle and sighed with satisfaction at the comfort level this action had achieved.
“I’m probably about to crash anyway,” she said apologetically. “All this talk of leaping tall buildings and magic green rocks is enough to tire a girl out, y’know?”
She giggled, peeking over at Alice in the darkness. Ashley really was looking forward to the next time the two could hang out. They’d formed a pretty strong bond already despite hardly knowing each other, and it felt like tonight had really cemented the fact that she’d found herself a friend for life. Being friends with Alice wasn’t draining or complicated. It was fun, silly, easy – everything you’d want from a dream BFF.
“Is it okay if I try to catch some z’s? We don’t have to get up super early but before noon would be great.” Ashley laughed. “I’ll see if one of my parents can give you a ride home after breakfast. If they manage to get up before noon themselves, that is,” she added teasingly.
With a final rustle of the covers, she twisted round into the perfect sleeping position – one arm dangling over the edge and the other reaching under the pillow to support her head. Without the bed as context, her position would probably resemble that of somebody who’d just been hit by a very fast moving vehicle. Hey, Ashley liked to sprawl!
“G’night – sweet dreams!”

Lazy Evening If there was one thing Ashley had figured out rather swiftly about Cory, it was that she had a terminal case of foot-in-mouth syndrome. A lack of tact combined with a seemingly atypical moral code – certainly different to Ashley’s in any case – was the perfect recipe for disaster. Rather than leaping to assure Ashley that she was of course going to do right by her dear friend, she was instead insisting that it didn’t mean anything. Sure, she’d promised not to screw her over, but her attitude still brought a wry smile to Ashley’s lips.
Damn it, she’d been trying so hard to keep a serious expression on her face. It hadn’t helped that Nugget had developed a keen intuition for understanding human conflict and, in the process, turned on his master in support of Ashley’s faux outrage.
“Casual? So my friend means nothing to you now, huh?”
The impact of her words were lost in the struggle to hold herself back from grinning, and she gave up on the charade, laughing at Cory’s grave expression. It reminded her of those moments in movies when the plucky young hero came up against a shotgun-wielding father and had to make a solemn promise not to defile his love interest. Jeez, had Ashley been so convincing? Maybe she’d have to talk to that agent about acting work after all…
“C’mon, it’s fine, I’m not her mother. I know Dana’s a free spirit and I know you’re not, like, some kind of predator or whatever,” Ashley giggled. “How did that even happen? Dana just told me she’s been running into a chick in clubs – she didn’t think to mention it was you. Did she win your favour with a bouquet of straws?”
The image of Dana presenting Cory with a carefully selected bunch of crazy straws was actually kind of sweet, and Ashley found herself jotting it down on her notepad. She had no doubt that there was nothing sweet about the casual hook-up arrangement – Dana in it for attention, Cory in it for… what? – but she could always make up her own imaginary romance to fit a song more in line with the McKenna Chase brand. Dana would love it, even if the number of details changed would make it entirely unrecognisable. It would be just another thing to brag about to her sorority sisters.
Straws were kind of drunk-Dana’s thing, after all.

The Lie-in King Ashley laughed, shaking her head at Alice’s dismissal.
“C’mon, there’s so many songs about it sex, they can’t all be boring. Or do you think the only people who sing about it are the ones not getting it?” She stroked her chin, pretending to have just expressed a thought deeper than the Mariana trench. “I sense a new career direction… Time to say goodbye to my pre-teen fanbase!”
She was visibly mollified by Alice approving of her vibe, her smile ever-so-slightly smug. She posed as best she could while horizontal, basking in Alice’s praise. “Thanks dude, you’ve got a hella awesome vibe going yourself!”
Definitely feeling tired now after their action-packed evening, Ashley tried her best to hold back a yawn. She looked up at Alice apologetically from behind her hands that she was attempting to cover up her mouth with. It was definitely past her bedtime.
“Only three??” Ashley gasped, horrified. “I might have to set you homework young lady, this could take a while…”
She snuggled into her pillow as Alice began talking about her own movie suggestions. Ashley perked up a little at watching a superhero movie – it was beyond perfect considering Alice’s alter-ego.
“Yes, yes please! While Paladin will always be my favourite, I suppose it couldn’t hurt to expand my knowledge of comic book heroes,” she said gleefully. “We can pretend it’s you up there on the screen. Well, except for the flying bits. And that magic vision stuff… But you can definitely stand for truth and justice! My hero.” Ashley swooned.

The Lie-in King It was definitely a fair call to tease Ashley about her squeamishness. In all honesty, Ashley probably would have been completely comfortable talking about it with – say – Dana (sparing the details that the party girl always felt necessary to include), but it just seemed odd with Alice even if the topic had been one that Ashley was personally intimate with. She was going to have to completely readjust her evaluation of the blue-haired girl when it came to this sort of thing.
“Well you can find me in church every Sunday, but I don’t think the convent is calling my name,” Ashley said with a laugh. “You wanna hear me say it? Sex!”
She raised her voice. “Sex, sex, sex!”
Below, her parents were sleeping peacefully with unfinished glasses of wine beside them. It was probably for the best.
“I’ve never written songs about it, you know,” she added as an after-thought. “Well, a couple, but from perspectives of friends. And I don’t think my manager would want me to record them anyway – kinda takes away from McKenna’s sweetheart vibe.” She grinned. “Not that I’m not a sweetheart myself, of course.”
Ashley tipped her head back to study the ceiling, a few leftover glow-in-the-dark stars still clinging on for dear life. These were the stubborn ones – the ones she’d failed to pick off when she’d turned sixteen and declared herself too grown-up for glow-in-the-dark stars. Now, at twenty, Ashley was grateful for the ones left, and considering installing a fresh set.
“Of course! It might be a little while until I’m not super busy but we should definitely arrange it. By the way,” Ashley said, recalling the reason for this sleepover in the first place, “You have seen Mulan, haven’t you? Any other Disney classics I need to force you to sit through?”
She laughed. “Or maybe it’s your turn to do the educating. Dude, there are tons of films I’ve never seen.”
