Over the years, Keaira had participated in numerous study groups though none had ever been quite as eventful as this one. Of course, she supposed that the operative word in that statement was 'group'. One on ones outside of the occasional tutoring session were rare even more so when it came to boys. For that matter, she was typically the one doing the tutoring which made this situation even more unusual for the brunette. In the few instances in which she had tutored a boy alone, they all tended to fall into a particular category: jocks who only sought her help as a last resort to avoid falling a class and being unable to play anymore. There was no romantic interest involved, only a desperation to pass which interestingly enough made them the most attentive students that she'd ever had.
However, Keke couldn't help but to feel that Madison was a bit distracted, to say the least. Worse yet, his distraction was distracting her. Still, the sixteen year old didn't wish to be rude. When had interactions between boys and girls become so complex? Or had they always been so and her lack of experience in the matter had merely kept her ignorant of the fact? Of course it was worth noting that Madison was hardly the caliber of boy that she was used to being around. In fact, back at home boys like Madison typically tended to avoid girls like her like the plague out of fear of tarnishing their 'oh so precious' reputations.
What was perhaps even more perplexing was that Madison was actually quite intelligent within his own right. So the theory that he hoped she would return the favor in another class seemed highly unlikely. As Madison repeated her statement aloud, the teenager's face flushed. While the expression on his face and his body language seemed to indicate that her response had been correct, his tone was a bit more difficult to read. Had she used the right word? Bewilderment creased the teen's features as she stammered "Well, uh yes.. guapo. It does mean handsome right? Oh God, I didn't just insult you did I?"
There was after all another word in Spanish that sounded quite similar but meant 'fat'. The technopath's fair orbs widened at the notion of having called Madison fat. As Madison reached out a hand towards her, Keaira's pulse quickened. Even while a part of her brain insisted that she swat his hand away and insist on returning to her lesson, the young woman's curiosity kept her from doing so. After all, the touch wasn't altogether inappropriate or if she were being honest, total unwelcome. Nevertheless, Keke's modesty reddened her face as he leaned in closer to confess that he had asked her here with ulterior motives.
Withdrawing from him ever so slightly the brunette inquired "And what might that agenda be? I have to confess that I am little disappointed to learn that you've bought me here under false pretenses. I was just starting to warm up to you. I'd hate for you to prove that what everyone says about you is true. If you're intentions towards me are impure Mr. Ardnell then I am afraid that I will have to disappoint you."

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned The prank that Kenzi had just played on her would likely have scared the crap out of anyone else that she had pulled it on, but truthfully Keaira simply didn't scare that easily. Especially when it came to jump scares which the teen just thought was a cheesy, predictable, and honestly lazy method of freaking people out. Watching horror movies was actually one of her favorite past times with her mother as the older woman appreciated her amusement with excessive gore. This wasn't of course to say that the brunette couldn't be frightened at all, but rather that she was more unsettled by movies involving evil spirits, possessed people or objects, and life or death scenarios that challenge one's mortality.
While old, the tunnel at least appeared structurally sound which was intriguing to the sixteen year old as it suggested that while it was currently unoccupied saved for themselves, it might still possibly be in use. The fact that a school had been built atop it might also indicate that its existence was either unknown to the builders or it was very much known and a conscious effort was being made to conceal it, but why? They hadn't even bothered to fill it in. Did they want students to find it or just hope that no one would come across it. The technopath had so many questions and as the ventured further into the tunnel, Keke grew irritated that none of what she was seeing seemed to provide any answers.
As Keniz's light splashed across the bare walls, Keaira's gaze followed. Curiously, the teenager's hand reached out to run her hand across the wall examining it's texture. Laughing softly at the dark haired girl's enthusiasm about vandalizing the structure, Keke shook her head saying "No, you can fix that. I'm no artist or tagger for that matter." Removing her hand, she continued "It's rough and uneven you're going to want to make sure you don't use anything that cold bleed or run. Not quite how it will hold up to the moisture or humidity either, but it certainly couldn't hurt to give it a splash or two of color. Especially since it's highly unlikely you'll get caught since most people have written this place off as just a rumor."
Shaking her head, the brunette added "I don't know the first thing about stenciling. That's not something that my mother dabbled in so we never covered it. Kenzi's explanation as to why the tunnel remained in existence did make some sense, the teen noted as she answered "I guess so, but it could be much more costly to leave it unsealed than to fill it in. I mean if there are any parts of this tunnel that are weak and could cave in there's a lawsuit waiting to happen. As Kenzi prattled on about her rogue character, Keaira couldn't help but notice the irony of a person having the ability to control one's attention but having the attention span of a seven year old herself. Keke had been interested in hearing about the rogue character, but it would have been nice if the other girl waited for confirmation before continuing on.
Eventually, they reached the end of the tunnel which was blocked by a large concrete wall. So, they had sealed it off. Well, sort of. Partially anyway. For the first time since they had entered the tunnel, the technopath's face lit up at the suggestion of using the location for LARP. Nodding eagerly she responded "Challenge level indeed. It should hold about 8-10 people easily. At least the first half should anyway. That's a great idea, really. " Even as she confirmed the assertion that it would make an excellent LARP site, several other usages for the space were already running through the sixteen year old's head.

As carefree of a spirit as Keke tried to be, there were a number of things that tended to vex the brunette and at the top of the list was being confused. While the logical segment of the teenager's brain insisted that uncertainty was inevitable in life, nonetheless, the sixteen year old despised it. Particularly, when it came to matters of the heart as her mother often said 'Love was many things, but the one thing that it should never be was uncertain.' The technopath was physically attracted to Madison, of that she was certain how he felt on the other hand, well that was an enigma. Ugh, why couldn't boys be more forthcoming?
Was it really that hard to walk up to someone and say 'I like you?' Apparently, so as she herself had yet to do it. Should she take this opportunity to follow her own advice, the teen mused. Keaira had just parted her lips to voice her inquiry when suddenly her mind went blank. There hadn't been a great deal of space between the pair but at that moment Madison had chosen to fill in the gap which now meant that he was closer to her. Really close. Uncomfortably close and yet she didn't want him to move. Her pulse had quickened making it quite difficult to focus on his feedback regarding her pronunciation. However, she was able to pick out a few key words like 'faster', 'foreigner' and 'slower'. It seemed enough to get the gist of what he was saying. As long as she spoke slower she wouldn't be able to pull off being fluent but for now she was ok with that.
Eww, why were her palms so sweaty, Keaira wondered as she replied "Well, I suppose that as I become more comfortable with the language I should pick up more speed when I speak. Although I never really expected to become fluent anyway. Just be able to carry on a halfway decent conversation." Just as Madison's hand brushed her knee, Keke's own hand had come down to rub her hands on her jeans in a vain attempt to dry them causing her fingers to lightly graze his before he pulled away. Suddenly, her face felt unbearably hot. However, at the mention of flashcards the teen's face brightened as she responded excitedly "Well, that's a study method that I can definitely get behind. Flashcards are kind of my jam. I make them for practically everything, you should see the ones I made to memorize the..." As Madison ran his hands through his hair, the brunette trailed off pathetically. He had such amazing hair, the motion on his part tempted her to replicate it, to feel the silky strands as they slid through her fingers.
Focus, Keke, the sixteen year old scolded herself. Ok, so she recognized most of the words that he'd said. 'Bonita' though? Didn't that mean pretty? Had he just called her pretty? It took a few seconds for the teenager's mind to bypass the mental blue screen that his primping had erected within her mind, but finally she was able to access her database of commonly spoken Spanish words and confirm that Bonita did in fact mean pretty. Assuming that he was just using the phrase as an example, the teen shrugged the verbiage off as she tried to string together a response. Feeling a bit uncertain, she answered "Um, then I guess I would say Buenas tardes, guapo."

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned The exuberance with which Kenzi approached....well... everything was as admirable as it was exhausting, the brunette thought to herself as the dark haired girl ran so fast that she tripped over her own feet forcing Kenzi to reach for the walls in order to avoid falling. The action prompted a soft chuckle from the sixteen year old as Keke found it refreshing for once to not be the clumsiest person in the room. In a manner that was somewhat motherly the teenager replied "Be careful. It's dark and we can barely see where we are going."
Keaira had to admit that Kenzi had a point about the victims in horror movies being stupid and non- powered. It was something that she often lamented about while watching them as sometimes the decisions that were made by the people running from the serial killer were so ridiculous that the teen became more focused on the absurdity of the film then the so called fear factor. She'd been just about to agree with Kenzi that jump scare monsters were unlikely to get the better of them, particularly when Kenzi could simply divert there attention when something weird started happening with the lighting seemingly catching both Keaira and Kenzi off guard.
"What the..." the technopath exclaimed as the stairwell grew darker then brighter then darker again. Perhaps, a bulb somewhere was about to blow, Keaira reasoned as she reached out into the darkness with her ability seeking the source of the light. Keaira frowned as much to her chagrin, the only device that she could lock onto was her own cellphone which she knew not to be the source of the malfunctioning lighting. It was odd. Her ability had never failed her before even back when she was still learning how to control it. Keke supposed that she could just turn her own cellphone flashlight on so that didn't have to linger in the dark any further.
However, just as she had been about to direct her phone to turn the flashlight feature on, a light appeared directly in front of her as Kenzi screamed "Boo" at her. Rolling her eyes, a smirk appeared on the brunette's face as she answered snidely "Cute. Real cute Kenzzi."
Her artistic companion then started down the stairwell as she followed along behind. It was strange to Keaira to be asked to introduce Kenzi to others and she supposed this was because she'd never really had so many friends before. The commonality of being metas just seemed to reduce the difficulty of making friends somehow. Offering a casual shrug that she was sure that Kenzi wouldn't actually see , Keke replied "I'll definitely invite her and who knows maybe if she is bored enough she may actually agree to it but I'm just not expecting it. In a school where everyone has superpowers, cool has been redefined to be honest. Though I have already considered setting up a LARP because it would be pretty epic."
Soon enough the pair descended the stairs into an actual tunnel which much to Keaira's surprise was relatively structurally sound aside from some blemishes and cracks. As Kenzi played with the tunnel's echo, Keke commented "It's got pretty decent acoustics. It must be even wider than it looks from here. I wonder how far it goes. Or why it's even here in the first place. Seems like they should have filled it in before opening the school." For a moment, the sixteen year old considered suggesting to Kenzi that they split up since it was quite possible that the tunnel would eventually lead them to a point where the paths intersected. However, she quickly thought better of it and fell in step with Kenzi whom had started marching off to the right.

It wasn't that Keaira had never had a crush before, but rather such feelings were often short-lived for the brunette. Keke was an annoyingly logical person and in most cases said logic often overrode her emotions. In fact, it was quite likely that it was for this very reason that the sixteen year old had never had a proper boyfriend before. She was simply too pragmatic to get caught up in emotional entanglements. While she liked to believe hat this was simply a part of her genetic make-up. the technopath suspected that this particular frame of mind that she'd developed was a least some part intentional.
It wasn't that the teen didn't desire a relationship, but more or less that she simply didn't understand them. Emotions were volatile, unstable, irrational, and fickle which made them far too unreliable and unpredictable for the teenager's liking. Of course, being a metahuman bought a whole new layer of complexity to the matter as it often erected a necessary but undesirable barrier between herself and whatever boy managed to catch her eye at the time. If she were being honest, it was likely this particular factor that spelled the end for more potential relationships than her incessant need to overanalyze her thoughts and feelings.
Of course, it was also quite possible that was why her current crush had been lingering for so long. She hadn't been able to immediately talk herself of out her infatuation by using the excuse of having to hide who she was. The simple fact that they were both here meant that they were both metas which was kind of a relief to be honest as it took a lot of the guesswork out of the situation. One didn't have to be anxious about how their potential lover would respond to the knowledge that they were a meta.
Still, there was an even bigger chance that she was misreading the situation entirely and Madison was simply being nice to her and wasn't interested in her romantically at all. Such a discovery would do little to diminish her physical attraction to the boy but would make it easier to not obsess over it. There was there smile again, Keaira thought to herself as he shifted his position in order to make room for her to sit. Lowering herself down on the bench next to him, a soft smile illuminated her own face as he reassured her that she'd answered correctly at least.
"Ok, so the words that I said actually meant what I thought that they did, which is good, but how was my pronunciation? I think that's what I really want to focus on. Pronunciation and conjugation. I feel like most of what I know how to say is either slang or really broken Spanish. Do you think you could help me out with that?"

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned Kenzi's revelation that she knew where to begin their search for the elusive under school tunnel prompted the brunette to quirk a brow at her adventurous new friend. Particularly, as she hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary during her own tour of the school. Then again she had been quite taken with the modernized scientific equipment in the labs and blown away by the vastness of the library. Suffice to say, that she was immensely distracted by what the school could offer her academically. Keaira considered Kenzi's words carefully as she explained that art in its truest form was really about baring your soul.
"Well, I suppose then by that logic as you said before, anyone can be an artist. Or at the very least anyone has the ability to create art. I suspect that the reason that not everyone actually is an artist is because baring your soul requires a form of bravery that not many possess. Well, that and the lack of technique and natural ability determines whether you can make a living off of it."
While Keke had never really viewed art as a form of relaxation, the teen couldn't deny that there weren't likely some people that found the artform soothing. After all, therapists had conducted numerous studies on the subject and found there to be at least some truth to the theory. In truth, the teenager had attempted once before to utilize painting to 'unwind' but found that she had simply been too much 'in her head' as her mother called it to really be able to relax.
A wry smile crossed, the teenager's face as she replied "Not putting any thought or skill into it is simply not an option for me, I'm afraid. That's probably why it doesn't work for me. When it comes to soothing activities, I'm much more of a meditation or yoga type person." While Keaira definitely had meant what she'd said regarding Kenzi's generous offer of emotional support, truthfully, Keaira preferred logic over emotion and often made a conscious attempt not to be overtaken by emotion. Although, much to her dismay there were definitely times in which she had been unable to reason her way through a tough situation as was evidenced by the sadness that had briefly consumed her just minutes ago.
Keaira couldn't help but to find Kenzi's excitement both adorable and infectious as the other girl gushed over Ivy's scales. Grinning, Keke replied "No, they aren't rainbow colored though I do have to admit that would be pretty cool if they were. They are actually purple for the most part but I have noticed them taking on a dark bluish hue at times as well. She says that they tend to change color based upon her mood. The sixteen year old pursed her lips together thoughtfully for a moment before responding "Well, I don't think Ivy would mind posing for you, but Mel on the other hand... well... she seems to be a bit sensitive about her eyes. I don't think it's likely that she'll want to be your artistic subject."
It was strange to hear a metahuman, a person whom from an evolution standpoint was already designed to stand out amongst their peers seeking ways to stand out even more so. How much attention did a person need, Keaira wondered. Or was that a side effect of her ability, the teenager mused. Smirking a little, the technopath added "Well, some of us don't have a choice but to be different. It's etched in out DNA to be different as meta whether we like it or not. Being loud and proud about it is definitely optional. I guess if it was just a matter of bigots calling a person ugly names, taunting, or harassing them it's one thing but I've seen bigotry take some really nasty and dangerous turns. You're never sure which kind you are going to get. The type who will give you a hard time through unkind words, name, gestures, and just full out discrimination or the dangerous sort that will allow themselves to be so consumed by hatred that they would seek to do you harm. People fear what they don't understand and hate what they fear and that's a pretty dangerous transition."
Keaira had heard the term 'postmodernism before as well, however, just as Kenzi had said she was also unable to clearly define it. To be honest, it sounded like a lot of philosophical gibberish. As Keke imagined starting a D&D campaign with her friends, the teen couldn't help but to giggle a little bit. "Well, Ivy would be down, I think. If she was intrigued by LAARP, I definitely think that she'd be willing to give tabletop a go. Ed would likely be up for it as well, but somehow I think Mel would think herself too cool for something like that." As the pair came to a rusted metal door, Keaira studied the structure with curiosity. She definitely didn't recall having ever seen this door before. As her mind drifted off to what could possibly be behind the door, Kenzi busied herself with testing every key on the chain that she'd swiped from the janitor until one of them fit the lock.
Slipping into the room behind Kenzi, Keaira shifted her gaze to the room that she now found herself within as the door closed firmly behind them. Initially, disappointment washed over the teenager's face as it appeared that they'd simply stumbled upon a janitor's closet. However, before she could suggest that they take their leave, Kenzi's gaze fell upon something in the far corner of the room prompting the brunette to follow her gaze. Without hesitation, Kenzi had taken off in the direction of a mysterious unlit staircase. Switching the flashlight on her cellphone on and started down the stairwell indicating that she should follow. Torn between being her natural pragmatism and her curiosity, the teenager reluctantly following commenting as she did so "You realize this is how most horror movies start, right?"

Keaira had always been an avid lover of nature. She supposed that in a way she had her mother to thank for that. There was really no better place to meditate, center, and ground yourself than in a meadow, garden or even a pond. The locale was sure to soothe her admittedly frazzled nerves. It was odd than she had never considered studying outside before now. Smiling softly, Keke replied "Being outside is actually a lot of fun. It's usually one of my favorite places to be to be honest. Nature is very...soothing." The brunette's dark orb shifted to the window as Madison commented on the weather. Nodding her agreement, the technopath added "Might be a bit chilly though. It usually is around bodies of water. Particularly, at this time of year."
The sixteen year old suspected that for most misplacing an item wasn't necessarily a big deal, however as a person that suffered from mild OCD, Keaira was simply beside herself at having lost her goggles. She was always so meticulous about how she packed her bag. How could this possibly have happened? Almost as if he could sense her frustration with herself and her mortification at having been called out by the teacher, Madison's arm gently grazed her own. It was a delicate touch, so much so that Keaira wasn't completely sure that she hadn't imagined it. Offering a casual shrug, Keke responded "Yeah, I guess you're right. I probably shouldn't get too hung up over it."
Much to the teenager's relief the rest of chemistry went without incident and the debacle from earlier was soon forgotten as the bell sounded and Kearia gathered her belongings. Offering Madison his spare pair of goggles back and resolving to invest in a spare pair of her own to avoid having such an incident take place again, Keke shuffled out the door and on to her next class.
As 3:00 rolled around never had the teen found herself more anxious about a study session as she had at that moment. It certainly wasn't the first time that she had studied with a boy and most certainly wouldn't be the last and yet... her palms were sweating....profusely. So much so that she had wiped them on her jeans several times prior to approaching the pond. Whereas her hands were no longer damp, upon seeing Madison lounging on a bench awaiting her arrival, the teenager's mouth suddenly felt dry forcing her to swallow hard several times before she could confidently return Madison's greeting.
Hola...well at least that was a word that she was familiar with. With a sheepish grin Keaira replied "Hola. Como estas?" Toying with a strand of hair that had crawled loose from her ponytail, Keke added "I hope that I said that right."

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned Having always fancied herself as something of a wordsmith Keaira tended to focus perhaps a little too much on how things were phrased even in expressions as common as "Everyone can paint." While the statement lacked sincerity coming from Kenzi whom she had already determined possessed a preference for natural talent in artistry, it was still undoubtedly true. Everyone could paint in the sense of performing the action. Anyone could go through the emotions especially if they had been formally instructed, but there were certain things that's simply couldn't be taught. Offering a casual shrug Keke replied "That's true, I mean even if I took classes and learned all the techniques, I still might not ever have the eye for color or imagination that you do. When it comes to my art then I always like to put my everything in it. Bare my soul if you will. My just for fun hobbies are typically in no way artistic. I guess that's just the perfectionist in me."
Never really grasping the concept of a rhetorical question, the brunette grew still for a moment before adding "Well,, studies show that most adult coloring books have no artistic purpose at all. It is actually supposed to be therapeutic in nature and help them destress. It has something to do with activation of the cerebral cortex." As Kenzi volunteered herself for emotional support, a soft smile lit the sixteen year old's face. In her circle of friends back home, the technopath had always been the one that others turned to for support. This even seemed to be the case for her mother at times. It was a little odd for someone volunteering to place herself in that person for her, yet endearing at the same time. For all intensive purposes, Keaira had always been very open about what weighed heavily on her mind, but the young woman's heart was a different matter entirely.
When it came to things that were truly painful such as her father's absence and how she felt about it, Keke tended to keep these feelings bottled up. Which was likely the train of thought that prompted the teen to reply with a simple "Thanks, I will keep that in mind and I really appreciate the offer." The summary of Ivy and Melody's abilities seemed to really capture the attention of the other girl as Kenzi unleashed a barrage of questions seemingly all in one breath. Laughing softly, Keke answered "Well, the only one that I can speak to with any any validity is the mermaid who is my roommate currently. Surprisingly, no, she doesn't actually require water to survive. However, she does need it to keep her skin from drying out. I think it has something to do with the scales. It is a pain to deal with because it totally works just like in the movies. She gets hit with water and BOOM, she's a mermaid!"
As she said this aloud, the teenager chuckled a little. Only within these walls could she make a statement about seeing a girl turn into a mermaid and not be concerned that she would immediately be hauled off to an asylum. "As for Mel, she isn't like Cyclops. She has control over it. Or at least I assume that she does as she isn't forced to wear a visor to keep from incinerating anyone. She's also one of the few people that I've met so far that does actually have physical characteristics of her ability. Her eyes change color. They're really gorgeous and unique but I'm not too sure she thinks so. I definitely support not being afraid of being different but I think for some of us that's easier said than done. If you're around people that are open minded about metas then I think it would be awesome to make that 'I'm different, deal with it' statement, but if you are around people that are very opposed to metas to the point of being antagonistic, aggressive, or even violent having something that makes it undeniable that you're a meta can be terrifying and dangerous," Keaiar continued.
Smiling brightly Keke added "Well, I actually like to think that the emergence of metas are redefining 'normal' Eventually, we will become the new normal. To be honest, I actually don't mind normal too much. It helps keep me balanced. I live in California were the concept of normal is actually pretty relative. I've lived with abnormality so long that normality fascinates me. I tend to make my own excitement so I am never really lacking for it. Oh, and no it's not an obscure reference. I do play D&D ass well as many other games. I have been told that I am quite the dungeonmaster in fact."
While Keaira was still quite skeptical that there was any chance a tunnel would exist underneath a building that appeared to be that modern, Keke was still intrigued about what the purpose of said tunnel may have been. What was its historical context? Who had this land belonged to prior to the school acquiring it? So many questions... As her overactive mind continued to generate possible scenarios, Kenzi had slipped away to speak with the janitor only to return with a set of keys. The brunette turned to follow Kenzi as she scurried down the hall asking softly "So, where do we start? Do we even know when the entrance to said tunnel would be?"

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned As Kenzi continued to display nonchalance towards the smudge on her face, Keaira couldn't help but to feel a little envious. Not only was the girl's artistry so strong that even her mistakes appeared to be intentional, but the confidence with which she bore the mark was admirable. The brunette was certain that even If for a moment, had someone pointed such a thing out to her she'd have been mortified. Perhaps that was why very few if any of Keke's hobbies were messy in nature. A sheepish grin flickered across the sixteen year old's face when Kenzi complimented her color analysis. Shrugging her shoulders casually, the teenager replied "My mom paints so I guess I picked up a few things from her. She doesn't do it professionally or anything. It's more like a hobby. She tried to get me into it, but I just don't have her eye I suppose. Nor her talent for that matter."
Much to her dismay, the teenager was all too familiar with the pain invoked by one's work being poorly received or misunderstood. In fact, her work was so often misconstrued that somewhere along the way, the technopath had just come to expect that this would always be the case. Thusly, she no longer sought understanding as much as she merely sought acceptance..Nowadays as long as her audience didn't trash it, Keaira could mostly handle the reader not quite understanding where she was going with it or what it was supposed to mean. It could perhaps be said that Keaira possessed the absolute worse poker face in existence. Particularly, when the subject of her father was broached. As hard as she tried to conceal her feelings when it came to her father's absence they always seemed to rise to the surface in one way or another and Keke absolutely hated that.
As such, it came as no surprise to the brunette that Kenzi had picked up on her reluctance to discuss the man that had contributed to her creation. Still, the teen was frustrated with herself for failing to better govern her emotions. Stricken with the urge to clarify, the sixteen year old responded "Well, my family as a whole isn't exactly a touchy subject. It's really just... my dad. He's not really... around, you know?" It was strange to hear herself say those words aloud as the lack of a father figure had always served as ammunition to those of her former classmates that already doubted her worthiness to be among their ranks. Many of them whom incessantly ranted about their father offering up a punishment that seemed quite unjust in their privileged eyes or having little time to dedicate to them as a result of a rigorous work schedule while she was perplexed as to why they weren't grateful that their father was present at all.
As Kenzi's eyes widened to the size of saucers, the technopath giggled. "Oh, same! Already I've met a guy that can fly, a girl that can turn into a mermaid... I'm still trying to figure that one out and a girl that can actually shoot lasers out of her eyes," Keaira gushed. Nodding her head in agreement to Kenzi's analogy, the brunette added "It is unchartered territory, that's for sure. Especially for a lot of kids who are used to having to hide what they can do. Abilities like ours are fairly covert in nature. I can't imagine what it must be like to have something that's harder to conceal. Like an ability that alters your physical appearance drastically."
Stepping out into the hallway Keaira continued " Yeah, I suppose it does but honestly I don't think I have met a person here yet that I can say I suspect has any true evil in them. I mean I'd say a few chaotic goods at best. For the most part I think that the bulk of the kids here are just looking for a place to belong. Trying to figure out what their new 'normal' is. Especially those that haven't had their powers for that long." A brow gently arched as Kenzi mentioned a secret tunnel. IT was the first that the teen had heard of it but admittedly, Keaira was intrigued. Was skulking the campus in search for a secret tunnel the good, smart, or right thing to do? Probably not, but would her curiosity let her be without discovering the truth of the matter? Definitely not.
Guided more by her curiosity than her desire to endear herself to the faculty, Keaira replied "Well, it's not like I have anything better to do. Let's go for it."

TAG: @ Words### Keaira was confused; it was a state of mind that the brunette wasn't familiar with and quite frankly didn't like at all. After ballet class, Keke was fairly sure that she knew precisely what kind of person that Madison was and had treated him as such. However, his offering to assist her with Spanish without asking for anything in return had given her pause. Although, if she were being honest, Madison's choice of locale for their meet-up seemed a bit odd. Beautiful, to be certain as the brunette had always found nature to be a relaxing environment, but not necessarily appropriate for studying.
Frowning, the sixteen year old replied "3:30 is fine, but outside though? Seems like it might be a bit distracting don't you think?" The location actually proved to be a bit more of a conundrum for the teenager than it should have been as Keaira was quite a big fan of nature and yet her studious nature didn't allow for much of any interruption in her studies. She had been about to suggest the library wherein she'd located a cozy little nook near the back that was rarely occupied in a section not often frequented which would all but insure that they wouldn't be disturbed when the teacher gave the instruction to put on their goggles and turn on their Bunsen burners.
It was a simple instruction that should have been easily executed and yet... where the hell were her goggles? The teenager could have sworn that she had placed them on her work bench and yet they were nowhere to be found. Frantically, Keaira sifted through the items on the bench becoming more and more agitated by the minute as the goggles resolutely refused to materialize. To make matters worse her frenzied motions had not gone without notice as the teacher chastised her quite unapologetically for being unprepared. Mortified, the technopath's cheeks tinged bright pink as her head drooped in shame.
Suddenly, Madison's voice piped up from beside her, informing both her and the teacher that he possessed an extra pair of goggles that he would happily loan her. While disappointment lingered in the older woman's eyes, she said nothing further. Instead the ornery professor merely gave the pair of them a curt nod before moving on. Still a bit disappointed in herself and feeling more than a little abashed, Keaira took the goggles from Madison's hand with a soft "thanks" and busied herself with sliding them over her eyes. As the teacher moved further down the aisle and out of earshot Keaira added low enough for just Madison's ears "Like, I said. Worse day, ever."

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned Despite having been the one to draw attention to the smudge on her face, the dark-haired girl didn't appear to be overly concerned with its presence there at all. In fact, Kenzi appeared tp ne wearing it as a badge of honor as she batted her rather lengthy eyelashes at her coquettishly. Keaira's youthful face adopted a stern expression as she pretended to study the other' girl's lovely visage much in the manner that a true connoisseur of art might. "Oddly enough, it does. Uncanny really. Lavender really does go well with your complexion and that soft green is a perfect compliment to the brown in your eyes. It really couldn't look better than if you'd done it on purpose, Keke replied.
A sly grin tugged at the teen's lips as Kenzi vowed to never seduce her again. Cheekily, the brunette responded " Good, I'm not quite sure that my heart could withstand another seduction attempt from you." Soon enough as the conversation returned to art, the gleam returned to the teenager's eye as she answered "Agreed. I have always believed that it is quite a honor when someone chooses to share their work with you because it can be such a deeply personal thing when its coming for a real place within you. It can be so raw sometimes leaving you feeling rather vulnerable and exposed. Especially when people just don't get it."
Following Kenzi's gaze up to the clock, the technopath grinned adding "Oh well, to be continued then." As Kenzi spoke of coming from a family of artists, a flicker of envy flashed in the sixteen year old's eyes. While single parent homes were rather commonplace these days it still didn't mean that Keaira was particularly pleased with the lack of a father figure in her life. While, she was in no way ashamed of her mother whom she thought quite highly of and even considered to be her best friend, truthfully, the teen often wondered about her father. Especially since she had developed her abilities. Did he possess abilities as well? Was he also artistically inclined? She'd long since concluded that her creativity couldn't have come from her grandparents as they seemed far too ornery for that kind of thing.
With a smile that seemed somewhat sad and more than a little forced, Keke replied "Well, I am not sure if mine is in my blood to be honest. I mean my mom is definitely pretty artsy. Not so much as a profession but in general. She's kind of crafty. She makes all sorts of things that she sells for extra income Like dreamcatchers, scented candles, hypo-allergenic perfumes and soaps. My grandparents don't seem to have an artistic bone in their body and my father... Thankful that Kenzi seemed interested in a demonstration of her ability, the somber expression that had previously marred the young girl's dainty features quickly dissipated.
As she slid the phone back into her pocket, the anxious teen studied the other girl's face eager to see her expression as the bell blared loudly. The sound had obviously taken the dark haired girl by surprise as she had flinched, but Kenzi seemed to quickly regain her composure as she began to gather her belongings. Sliding out of the desk, Keaira slung her bookbag strap across her shoulder turning towards Kenzi as her classmate inquired as to whether or not she was a hacker. Laughing soflty, the brunette replied "Yeah, something like that. I am rather gifted with electronics. I can form a telepathic link with them that allows me to manipulate them fairly easily. I can essentially place phone calls, send text messages, and use a tablet or laptop without ever touching the device itself. Ranges devices like the bell require me to use another device kind of like a remote in order for it to work."
Noticing relief wash over Kenzi's face, Keke glanced briefly at the teacher before returning her gaze to Kenzi whom confirmed her suspicion of having released her hold on the teacher's attention. "Oh, and yeah I can hack most stuff," the teen added as she fell into step with Kezni whom was heading towards the door. Shrugging in response to Kenzi's rhetorical question, Keaira answered "Well, I would like to think that they will employ metahuman teachers that will be able to keep us in line. Or at the very least provide classrooms or buildings where our abilities will be negated to keep us from running entirely wild. In theory the school really isn't that bad of an idea, but in practice it could end up being more than they bargained for. "

TAG: @ Words### This was so unlike her, Keaira thought to herself with frustration. What was wrong with her today? Socializing with boys had always been something of a challenge for the brunette, but never could she recall a time in which she'd been rendered so flustered by someone that she couldn't form coherent sentences. There was a first time for everything, the teen knew, but this certainly wasn't a first that Keke could appreciate. Losing her inhibitions was indeed a terrifying thing for one whom prided herself on self control.
The gentle rise of Madison's brow somehow wrenched her from her reverie. as he inquired as to whether or not the grass would be able to regrow. As her anxiety intensified, the teenager had begun to absent-mindedly twirl a lock of hair about her index finger. Clearing her throat, Keaira started "Well, I suppose it could. It just depends on what kind of chemicals we use and how badly the grass is burned as a result. If the roots are still healthy then new growth shouldn't be inhibited, but if we manage to scorch the glass to its roots then re seeding might be necessary which is quite a hassle even for just a small patch. It is probably better that we err on one die of caution anyway, because..."
Keke broke off mid sentence, her cheeks reddening as she realized that her mother's influence was showing. Much to her surprise, Madison offered to assist her with her pronunciation. It was a kind offer and one that shouldn't be regarded with suspicion and yet Keaira found herself wondering whether or not it was because he felt sympathy towards her because she'd had such a rotten day or it was genuinely out of the goodness of his own heart. With her grade in Spanish suffering, the sixteen year old was hardly in a position to turn down a tutor. Suddenly, a thought came her! Wait, was he....was he asking her out? Like on a date? A study date, but a date nonetheless...
No...not of course not. That would be ridiculous. Guys rarely looked at her in that regard. Offering Madison a sheepish grin, Kearia replied "Really? I totally suck at rolling my Rs. I think that's the bulk of my problem with pronunciation. If you could help me with that, I am pretty sure that the rest will be a piece of cake." In an effort to better see the paper detailing their experiment for the day, Madison had to move a little closer to it and in essence...her. As he did so, Keke was once again very aware of the prominence of Madison's pecs. Were they somehow more noticeable then they had been a few minutes ago... no... that was absurd, but man did he smell nice, the brunette noted.
Nodding her head numbly, Keke answered "Uh...yeah. Pretty much or Fe(s) + Sg(s)? But yeah that's pretty much the gist of it. I assume that mastering this will help us better understand and be more prepared for the lesson on Oxidation. " Having been so wrapped up in her conversation with Madison, Keaira hadn't noticed that the classroom had begun filling up until the teacher strolled in and instructed everyone to don their safety goggles and turn on their Bunsen burners.

i wake at the first cringe of morning and my heart's already sinned To be honest there were really only a handful of things that Keaira could earnestly say that she took great pride in and strangely, her nickname had never really been on that list. However, as she noted Kenzi's enthusiasm on the topic, the brunette began to wonder if perhaps it should be. With her attention being drawn to the smudge on her face, Kenzi began vigorously rubbing at the blemish which only succeeded in further smearing the chalk across her cheek and in essence making the issue considerably worse. Although as she watched the other girl trying her best to clear her face, Keaira couldn't help but to wonder how in the world the chalk managed to get so high up on her face in the first place? Had she perhaps had some residue lingering on her hands and then dabbed her first. It would be the most reasonable scenario but then why was it so firmly imprinted on her cheek.
Shaking her head as Kenzi inquired as to the status of the discoloration to which she replied "No, I'm afraid not. Actually, I think you might have just made it worse to be honest." As she inquired as to what Kenzi had been working on that her put her visage in such a state, the teen's face illuminated. Kenzi's passion for her art was not only refreshing to Keaira but resonated with the technopath deeply. It was a gift to find something in life that could invoke such emotion not only within yourself but within others as well and it seemed that her artwork was just that. Nodding her head in agreement, Keke responded "That's true. Art is all about the feeling. Not just about what you feel but the ability to translate what you feel into something tangible that resonates on some level with others. Whether the beholder loves it or hates it, they feel something towards it one way or the other."
Giggling a little as Kenzi vowed to spare her the entire six hour spiel, the sixteen year old added "That's probably a good thing because this class is only 45 minutes long." Indicating that she was in fact just as adept at figurative art as expressionism, Kenzi withdrew a piece of paper and began sketching a map of the hallways. Which were in and of themselves quite impressive, however as her muse took over what was once a simple map soon became an intricately drawn dragon with scales that were practically 3D. "That's beautiful. You're attention to detail is amazing," Keke breathed as Kenzi continued drawing even while explaining the limitations of her ability. When the topic shifted to her own abilities, the technopath's dark orbs lit up as she replied coolly "I can show you better than I can tell you."
With the teacher still quite distracted, Keaira dug her phone from her jacket pocket. Sliding her finger over the home screen, Keke unlocked the phone . Casting a brief glimpse out of the door towards the hallway, the brunette's fingers quickly flew across her keypad for several minutes. Sliding the phone back into her pocket, the teen lifted a finger towards Kenzi as if to save 'Wait for it.' Suddenly, the bell blared loudly prompting the teacher to cease her scribbling on the chalkboard and turn to look at the clock in utter confusion. "Oh, class is over already? Time must have caught up with me. Maybe the closk needs to be reset. Oh, well. Class dismissed! We'll pick this back up tomorrow."
Pulling her backpack into her lap, Keaira neatly tucked her notebook and writing utensils into the bag as Kenzi evaluated her work. The subject of souls had actually managed to catch the teen by surprise. Having not grown up in a traditional Christian household, it was quite difficult for Keke to put into words what she believed in but she could say for certain that the presence of souls had never once been mentioned by her mother. in anything she suspected that the pair of them believed in reincarnation. So perhaps more or less one's spirit which she supposed could be a variation of a soul. Or synonymous, even. Beaming at Kenzi's praise, the teenager nodded eagerly as she answered "Sure, anytime you want to see it. I'd love to see what you were working on before class. The fruits of your labor if you will. I also write short stories if you're interested in that. I've started like thousands of novels, all unfinished because my mused is always in overdrive and I get more ideas before I can complete one. Someday though."

TAG: @ ; Words### By her own admission, despite being rather academically gifted, Keaira didn't possess many other talents save for one; an innate ability to not only detect one's most positive attributes but to encourage them to showcase them to others. It was her calling so to speak and she was good at it...usually. Keke had as of yet to ascertain Madison's redeeming quality and as she refused to believe that he simply didn't have any the only logical conclusion for the brunette to draw was that she hadn't made an earnest effort . But why? That was the question. Why had she been so content to allow her pre conceived notions of Madison to linger for so long? Taking his poor behavior in ballet at face value was an affront to her inner scientist.
It was almost as if a part of her had no interest in being proven wrong about him. Like she preferred to cling to her prior assessment of his character even if her logic and reasoning behind the conclusion she'd hastily drawn was flawed. But to what end? Her continued disassociation with him? Was that it? She needed a reason to justify her alienation? This was a first, and to be honest more than a little unsettling. Perhaps, she was merely overanalyzing things as usual. After all, Madison was just a boy. A boy.... with a really cute smile, but a boy nonetheless. She'd talked to boys before, right? Well, actually no. Not, really. She'd babbled incoherently and they usually nodded politely and smiled till something else eventually stole their attention.
As she heard a low chuckle escape Madison's throat, the teenager lifted her gaze to study his face. Well, she'd definitely been right about the cute smile. Why hadn't she ever noticed that before? More importantly, why was she noticing that now? Focus, Keke, Focus, the teenager thought to herself. If she had any chances of getting through this class without Madison painting her as a blithering moron she had to at the very least refrain from looking directly into that smile. Choosing instead to focus on his words, the sixteen year old's gaze flitted over to the window as he commented on the weather. He had a point. It was a radiant day with the sun's ray reflecting beautifully and brilliantly off the glass.
Nodding, the technopath replied " Preferable, but a bit impractical I'm afraid. While I admittedly haven't read over the details of today's experiment in full, there's always a probability of the reaction becoming or being volatile. Should that be the case the local flora is highly unlikely to be able to withstand such volatility." Oh, she was doing it again wasn't she? Meeting idle small talk with sound logic, because that was what every boy liked right? Cogitation and Sound Reasoning. Wait, what did it matter what boys liked? Well, not boys, plural, Keaira reasoned. What was wrong with her today? Slightly concerned that the chaos that was unfolding in her mind was visible on her face, Ke's gaze flitted back to Madison.
Well... it would seem that the brunette had found another place to focus attention other than his smile, but she wasn't sure that it was in any way appropriate. In fact, her cheeks burned with her modesty as she noted the way that the delicate fabric of Madison's shirt clung to his torso showcasing his rather impressive pectoral muscles. Averting her gaze would be rude as you were supposed to look at the person that you were speaking to, but wouldn't continuing to stare at his chest be even ruder? Much to her relief, Madison bent to retrieve the tongs that she had dropped earlier, giving her a chance to tear her gaze away and he placed them back in their previous spot before moving to take his seat beside her.
Shaking her head, she continued "It's more than just that. It's just been a bad day all around. I've been running behind schedule all day today. I spilled a soda on my favorite blouse so I had to rush and change after my first class. No matter how hard I try, I'm still a disaster in ballet and despite the fact that I am actually pretty good at writing in Spanish and singing in Spanish I still get points off on stuff because my pronunciation is terrible. It's just been an awful day, but I'm sure you don't really want to hear about all that." Looking down at the sheet of paper that was sitting on the table between the pair, Keaira answered "Um, well it looks like today we have binary chemical reactions. Oxidation and reducing agents is scheduled for tomorrow. Technically none of our reports are due for any of these until the end of the week so I suspect that we can do them in any order we choose. Which would you like to do first? I mean what are you must comfortable or familiar with?"

TAG: @ Words### Being perpetually tardy despite her numerous attempts at punctuality was maddeningly frustrating. However, if there was anything that perturbed Keaira more than her failure to consistently arrive to class on time it was the fact that Madison had arrived before her. MADISON! Of all people! Somewhere in the back of the brunette's mind, Keke realized that it probably wasn't fair of her to make such a snap judgment about what kind of person Madison was based solely on his atrocious behavior in ballet. Still, it was her first interaction with the arrogant young man and the impression that he'd left upon Keke was less than stellar, to say the least. It was quite possible that perhaps had the teen never found herself in the position of being partnered with Madison in this class that she would have content to allow her first impression of him be her only impression of him.
Which left the teen with a couple of options; minimize her interactions with Madison doing just enough to get their project finished as quickly as possible or actually take some time to get to know each other in hopes that they would discover enough common ground that they'd be able to better tolerate one another. Particularly because as she understood it, changing partners was not an option and she'd be stuck with Madison for the remainder of the year. After all, no one could be all bad, could they? He had to have some redeeming qualities, didn't he? Almost as if on cue, as if her thoughts had summoned him to her, Madison crossed the room to where she was seated. For some strange reason the thought of her thoughts drawing him to her lingered within the teenager's mind perhaps a bit longer than they should have.
Was it possible that they had? For all she knew he could very well be a telepath. It wasn't like they'd discussed their powers with each other. Or that she would ever expect them to get to that level of comfort with one another in which they would. Still now that the idea had taken root, a deep scarlet hue seeped into her cheeks. As much of as she hadn't necessarily been a huge fan of her old school, the sixteen year old now oddly found herself missing it. Or at the very least missing normal awkwardness in social interactions where she was more concerned with things like whether or not her clothing was in style rather than whether a potential new friend was a mind reader or not. Granted, she hadn't been hosting any inappropriate thoughts at the time, but a person's mind just seemed like an immensely personal thing to have a person invade.
He had greeted her. He'd greeted her and she hadn't responded. The technopath was merely sitting there slack jawed blushing furiously. for seemingly no apparent reason. Finally finding her voice, Keaira replied "Morning! Afternoon, rather. Is it after noon? Well, I mean it is technically after Noon, so I guess it would be afternoon wouldn't it? " Oh my gosh, Keke, can you be more of a spazz, the teen scolded herself as her blush worked its way all the way up to the tips of her ears. Smiling sheepishly, the brunette tried again "That didn't really make sense, did it," she inquired.
"Well, I meant to say was.," Keaira started as her hand reached up to smooth a lock of hair out of her face ,Keke leaned forward unaware of the placement of the metallic tongs on the table which once coming into contact with her elbow fell onto the floor with a loud clang. "Dammit, I can't do anything right today," the teen swore.
