Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice returned the nod in silence, affecting the most intimidating glare she could manage without bursting out laughing. After all, the destruction of childhood movies was no laughing manner. It was pretty clear however that Alice's comparative Disney movie ignorance had affronted Ashley a little. She held up her hands in surrender, "OK OK."
She smiled, "Deal, although I can't promise that my rendition of the soundtrack will be anything that those stuffed animals might enjoy. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if later you found that most of them had attempted suicide."
It was cool to hear about Ashley's life, especially because it was so far removed from her own.
"That's amazing! I've hardly even lift the city. I'd love to go travelling around the states. Or even out of the country! How cool would it be to go to Europe? Or Japan? Or China?"
She was lost for a moment in fantasies of other countries. It wasn't a huge fantasy of hers, but her world was changing so fast right now that she had no idea what was possible anymore. It would have been pretty sweet if she'd been able to fly, then she could have just visited those countries without having to worry about plane tickets.
It was strange to sit here with Ashley in such a mundane situation. Maybe she was a celebrity, maybe she was a really talented musician, but compared to everything that had happened to Alice over the last few months really it seemed comparatively humdrum. She wondered if Will had mentioned anything to Ashley about their powers. He hadn't mentioned it, and she certainly hadn't said anything that sounded like she knew.
"Yeah, can do, plus there's all the cleaning and things as well, and I have… uh… other stuff as well."
She couldn't very well mention her plans to patrol the city looking for crime to fight. It wasn't exactly your average night time plans.
"Still, if you're up and doing it at all times of the day and night then I suppose I could too. Although you might have to go easy on me at first. I'm pretty out of shape compared to you…"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Nooooooo."
Alice stuck her fingers firmly in her ears, closing her eyes and singing out at the top of her voice.
"La la la la la la la."
She stopped and glared at the brunette as she came to the end of her vicious tirade against the movies of her childhood.
"I hope you understand that I hate you. It's nothing personal, I just have to hate you right now."
She stared out over the city in a moment of silence for her lost childhood, the shrugged, "I never actually saw the Lion King so I guess I can forgive you for that one."
She frowned thoughtfully for a moment, "Until I watch it, then I'll hate you for that too."
She grinned, finally letting up on the apparent seriousness. She supposed at least it would have changed the way she watched those movies now. If she went back to them it wouldn't be like watching the same movie again. Peter Pan would be like watching a thriller. Finding Nemo like some weirdly disturbing romance about incest…
Maybe she'd avoid Finding Nemo.
"I guess I could make something healthy. It can be fun, it's harder to make healthy stuff that tastes just as good. It's like God wanted us to be fat, otherwise he wouldn't have made the fatty bits taste so damn good!"
She nodded in agreement, "So do you live in San Francisco? I guess you have to travel around quite a lot for your music stuff?"
It was a strange life to think of, Alice had never been outside of San Francisco, except for camp one summer. Ashley must have been all over the US, Alice wondered what it might be like to spend each week in a different town, sleeping in different beds, in different hotel rooms. Alice's home might not be much, but at least it was hers.
"When do you find the time to exercise?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice looked at Ashley partly amused, and partly affronted.
"What exactly are you saying about my stomach? Last I checked I didn’t have to undo the top button of my pants."
She looked down, lifting the hem of her shirt for a moment to double check.
"Yep, definitely done up properly."
She stuck waggled her eyebrows challengingly at the singer, "I'm not even sucking in."
She helped herself to some more bread and cheese. It was awkward cutting and spreading it with the flimsy plastic knife, but it tasted damn good, and it was definitely worth it. It might even be worth having a sumo stomach if she could just live on stuff like this instead.
She'd been telling the truth when she told Ashley that she wasn't sucking in her stomach, which was probably not a good thing. She had a fast metabolism it was true, but even a fast metabolism couldn't compete with a lack of regular meals. She wrestled her mind away from her monetary woes, Ashley had paid for most of it but it was still more than Alice really should have spent. It would be fine, she told herself, she would just have to miss a few more meals this week. She'd got to meet someone new, someone who seemed pretty fun. She was surprised to say that she really like Ashley, at least from the short time that she'd known her, and she'd certainly like to spend time with her again.
"Peter did what?!"
Alice's familiarity with Peter Pan was entirely through the Disney movie, she'd certainly never heard anything about Peter getting rid of Lost Boys.
"I thought they just never grew up? Was he the only one?"
She sat with her mouth open.
"You might have just destroyed my childhood right there…"
She waited while Ashley somehow crammed what looked like half the brie into her mouth. Alice honestly thought that the other girl had been a little unambitious with the amount of bread and cheese.
"Yeah I think you're right, I really want to get fitter but I don't know if going to the gym is going to be the right idea."
Alice raised an eyebrow, "Wouldn't those post workout treats defeat the point of the workout?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Hmmmm…"
Despite knowing that she would have to start working out, Alice wasn't convinced. After all, she hadn't worked out in any way since High School, and even then that was only Gym. It hardly counted as a proper workout compared to the kind of thing that Ashley was talking about.
"I'm sure, still not sure I'd be the best fit for it though, I think I enjoy my cheese a little too much, I couldn't leave it behind if I wanted to."
She nodded in agreement with Ashley's next comment though. Alice couldn't quite imagine herself being a proper grownup with a job, bills to pay and…
Damn.
Suddenly Alice felt old. It felt weird having to be like an adult, especially when she was only just out of High School and her best friend was in University. Stephen definitely didn't seem like he was an adult yet. He was living at home over summer break, his mom still making his meals and doing his laundry. Alice did all her own laundry, and meals, and struggled to pay the bills most months.
"I wish I could be like Peter Pan, life seemed much simpler in Neverland. Never having to grow up? Yes please. Way too many responsibilities when you're an adult…"
She raised an insulted eyebrow at the question.
"What kind of stupid question is that? Of course I want some."
She looked out over the city as she waited for Ashley to start doling out the bread and cheese. She could see everyone going about their days, enjoying life, working, getting by. It was weird to think that now she was one of those people. Except not quite, she was something more, or maybe one day she would be. Just having powers didn't make her better. Nothing would ever make her better than them. Maybe one day she would be able to really make a difference.
"So how would I even start working out properly?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | The brief flash of Ashley's stomach that Alice did catch was both a little surprising, and demoralising. Annoyingly enough, Ashley did actually have solid abs. And not just a toned stomach, actual, defined abs. Alice had never seen abs like that on a girl (or a guy in person). It made her realise just how far behind she was when it came to fitness.
"You might have to wait a while before I'm even close to being that fit…"
Judging by the collection of food they had acquired not ten minutes ago, Alice felt that Ashley wasn't a complete health freak. The amount of exercise she would have to do to eat and still have those abs must be terrifying. Plus Alice didn't have that much spare time. Between her job and training her powers this was one of her few days off. She would start working out more and getting fitter, but it might be a matter of starting to run at night or something.
Clearly Ashley understood what it was like to not have all that much time on your hands. "Yeah, you're right…"
It might have been one of her few days off, but Alice was glad she was spending it with Ashley. She might have only met her today, but they seemed to get on well. It had been fun so far and she saw no reason why it wouldn't continue to be so.
"You've got to make sure you don't become a super boring adult after all."
To prove that she wasn't a super boring adult she stuck out her tongue at the other girl. Alice opened her mouth in response to the proffered grape, taking the juicy fruit on her tongue as the other girl fed it to her. She nodded at the other girl.
"Mmmmf… yeah, start with the brie, otherwise this one will just ruin you for other cheeses. It is kinda strong too. Don't want to spoil all the other flavours."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice groaned as they finally reached their destination. Her legs were burning now, and she was still out of breath, despite her pause to recover halfway up. The long climb would make her feel better about the enormous amounts of cheese they were about to consume though, as she felt ravenous.
"Right now I could eat your abs I'm so hungry…"
She stood up straight again, climbing the rest of the way to the top of Turtle Hill. She sat down with a sigh of relief, setting the paper bag beside her while she regained her breath enough to actually begin eating. And talking…
"I am never challenging you to something like that again."
Of course she was already intending to start working on that. It wouldn't do for her to run out of breath while she was chasing someone. Or fighting them… She could just imagine having to ask for a breather in the middle of a street brawl. The mental image almost made her laugh out loud.
She looked out over the city. "You know, even though I live here, I don't see this often enough…"
After a moment longer of looking out over San Francisco she started pulling things out of her bag.
"Ok, I got the bread, that means you should have the fruit then. What do you want to start with?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Eleventh of August, 2017 Late EveningThe street looked awfully far away, and if she'd known how far away then Alice would not have felt much better. The building was five stories tall. If she fell from this height there was no way she'd walk away, and certainly no guarantee that she'd live. There was a hollow crash from the other side of the roof. The door she'd jammed behind her finally coming off its hinges. It looked like this was it. All the other buildings were too far away to jump, and there was no other way down off the roof. She regretted having come up here in the first place. The open doorway had just seemed so inviting, and then the stairs had just kept going until she'd realised that they didn't go any further. She was breathing heavily, still getting her breath back from the chase. The only thing that gave her some solace was that the two thugs that had followed her must be pretty tired as well. Maybe that meant she could try and get around them. Her back was pressed against an air-conditioning unit, a huge metal block that squatted on the roof like some giant spider. She could hear heavy footsteps. The two were coming closer, and she was in the only hiding spot the barren landscape of the building's roof had afforded. Knowing she had no choice she swung around the side of the air conditioning unit, only to find an equally surprised man coming the other way. She stumbled back in shock, catching her heel on the rim of the roof. With a cry, Alice toppled over the edge and fell into space. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Third of August, 2017The man currently embedded in dry wall moaned. Paladin had not meant to put quite as much power into that blow, but she still hadn't got a handle on how to moderate the level of power she used. It was still all or nothing. Apparently she'd been holding onto a lot more than she had realised. His duffel had split open with the impact, and a plastic bag had fallen out of the tear. The bag was full of slightly translucent crystals. Paladin might not have been a cop, or a criminal, but she wasn't stupid. It turned out that Spectre had been right, this guy was definitely shady. She flinched as a bolt of blue lightning seared past her, then looked up as another man collapsed onto the ground with a sigh. A machine pistol dropped from his hand as he did. "You want to watch yourself Paladin."She turned as Surge sauntered down the corridor, lowering his hand. There was a wide grin on his face, his teeth shockingly white against his dark skin. He didn't look disapproving at all, in fact, he seemed delighted. "Yeah… sorry, just didn't mean to hit him that hard."Surge glanced at the man in the drywall. He groaned again. He shrugged, "He's alive."___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eleventh of August, 2017 Early Evening"So are we just going to go out on patrol again? Like last time?"Dominic nodded, picking up the mask from his bag and securing it in place. His suit was considerably impressive, a deep, midnight blue, so dark as to almost be black, lit through by lightning bolt shapes of increasingly lighter blue and white. "I think that's what we need to do for now, it's all very well and good listening in on a police scanner, but I think Will is right when he says we should try and avoid anything too heavy. It's not like any of us are bullet proof."Alice nodded as she shrugged into the suit that Stephen had made for her. It was a perfect fit. It had needed a few adjustments when she'd first worn it, but Stephen had done that for her too. It hadn't had to be patched yet, although she knew that some of the other's had suffered that problem. Her power at least seemed to offer some protection to her suit as well. "Yeah you're right, but it's not like we meant to bust a drug lord last week…"Dominic, Surge now that he was wearing his mask, nodded thoughtfully. "It's a pity that we couldn't stay around for that, but at least all that meth was taken off the streets."Alice turned to the others as she pulled her mask into place. Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Of course I know them, I grew up here!"
Alice did indeed know the steps that Ashley was referring to, although the thought of climbing them was a little daunting. Still, she supposed it would mean that the multiple blocks of cheese they had just bought wouldn't make them feel too guilty as they'd probably lose ten pounds just climbing the painted concrete. It would also just be somewhere nice to eat.
Alice hadn't been entirely happy with Ashley paying for most of the food, even if she was secretly grateful. Still, the other girl had insisted, and Alice certainly didn't want to get into an argument over something like money.
They walked out of the shop with their cheese, bread and fruit clutched in large paper bags. Alice immediately turned to the right, already knowing where she was going.
"It's not far, you're going to have to prove your title of cardio queen when we get there though."
Alice was under no illusions in this regard. She was slim… well… skinny… because she was gifted with a fast metabolism, not because she worked out. In fact, her heaviest exercise since gym in high school had been running for the bus when she was late to work. That was shortly proven when they reached the top of the stairs. Alice was definitely out of breath, and had to set down her paper bag and rest with her hands on her knees while she got her breath back.
"No… fair… you…"
Alice had to breath between each word, she was intensely regretting her challenge of a race at the bottom of the stairs.
"… are… really… fit…"
She settled down as she regained her breath and scowled at Ashley, "remind me to believe you next time you say that you're cardio queen."
Alice definitely needed to work out more…

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice nodded in agreement with Claire, what she did was so different to her power. Still, she'd already said her part, and it was very much Claire's power. If anyone understood it then it should be her.
She watched curiously as Persephone started to rummage through the things in her shopping bag, tearing off leaves and crushing stems then mixing them all together with water into what looked like some sort of disgusting green cupped in her hands. Admittedly, smoothie was probably being generous, it looked more like sludge. Alice was pretty sure she'd cleaned something like that out of the u-bend in the sink.
Disgusting though it looked, Alice had faith that Persephone wasn't just trying to trick her into dipping her hands into something disgusting, not when she'd done it first. She held out her hand, starting slightly at how cool the mixture felt when it touched her skin. She could feel a faint tingling on her palms and the tips of her fingers, the points that had been most affected by her little accident.
After waiting about ten seconds she crossed to the sink herself, twisting the faucet around once more the wash the goop from her hands. Her palms looked better, the redness was gone. She watched carefully, but it failed to return. They felt better, the gentle stinging having eased only a moment after the salve was applied to the affected area. She rubbed her fingers gently against her palms, marvelling at how soft they suddenly felt.
She turned to the others with her hands open, showing them the work that Persephone had done.
"It's all gone, they feel so much better!"
She looked around at the group of people gathered around, hoping that doing so had taken Mason in as well.
"Guys, we could really do this!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice had always been a little bit weird in school, and she certainly hadn't grown out of it, not yet anyway. Unfortunately at that age most teenagers were too concerned with being cool for it to have really made her much in the way of friends. At least in this case that didn't seem to have mattered. Ashley was clearly entirely comfortable in herself in a way that people Alice's age weren't. In truth Alice wished she were that secure in herself, but at least she was happy enough messing around and being herself in this way, even if she had other insecurities.
"Okay…"
Alice hunted through the cheese stack, carefully prying out a small triangle of cheese as though she were removing a block from a Jenga tower. She placed it in a small metal basket she'd collected at the door.
"Brie…"
Her eyes roved up and down the wall of dairy produce, searching for the next request. They were disappointed.
"Well there's no Swiss, but there's Jarlsberg, which is like Norwegian Swiss cheese…"
That was the problem, and advantage of this place. The prices were often quite low, but there was no guarantee that they would have the same stock the next time you came in. She paused to hunt through the stack for a few more things that caught her eye. Satisfied with the small pile of cheeses in the metal basket she moved on to the bread.
This was essentially a basket with various different loaves in. She grabbed what looked like half a dozen buns stuck together.
"This stuff is great! It's from Germany, or the recipe is anyway."
Into the basket it went and they progressed into the second of two aisles the store actually possessed. There was another fridge here, along with a few plastic crates of fruit. Clearly this had been raided already today, but there were still a few things left, mostly less exotic unfortunately.
"I've done all the picking so far, so go ahead and grab some fruit if you want some."
That done, they took their shopping to the heavy man somehow crammed in behind the register. He rang it up an item at a time, chatting happily with Alice, clearly having seen her before.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | What Ashley had said sparked a thought in Alice. She wanted to be able to fight crime, to go out and save people. Ashley looked pretty fit, and Alice believed her when she said she was a cardio queen. Alice was willing to bet she wouldn't be able to outrun the shorter girl. That wouldn't bode well for a budding super hero.
Ashley's description of her songs sounded about right for most songs these days. That didn't mean they weren't good though.
"Will you want a receipt for that stardust?"
Alice stood, clutching her fro-yo as Ashley headed towards the door, still moving her arms in gentle circular motions. Of course she couldn't let Will's sister look like some kind of loser, so she started circling her arms as well.
"The next station is like ten blocks away… you don't mind taking the train all the way there?"
She had a place in mind, it was a tiny little supermarket run by the most American man she had ever met. Except for his taste in food, at least the food that he stocked. It was full of spices and cheeses and strange breads and other things you didn't find in the typical Walgreens. It was a favourite haunt of hers when she had a little more disposable income. It would at least do for today though, the prices were fair and a nice meal out with a friend was a good excuse not to worry about everything else for a little while.
--
It did not take them long to get to the small supermarket, which was tiny, but packed tight with all sorts of exotic foods. There was a small fridge at the back piled high with cheese under some sort of haphazard system. That is to say, there was clearly no system.
Alice lead Ashley straight to said fridge.
"What kind of cheese then?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | "Well that's a relief at least, I'm not sure what I would have done if you'd said yes to that question. Just run away probably."
She mulled over the thought of Ashley's religion for a moment. It wasn't uncommon in San Francisco, but she'd never really been much interested in God. It wasn't that she had anything against the idea, she'd just long ago lost the belief that praying would make anything better. She certainly didn't begrudge others their faith though.
"I hope you're willing to share some of those hot dudes. The rest of us don't have money and fame to help us score."
She nodded in response to Ashley's joke, laughing lightly.
"Sure, but you'd have to sing enough songs to fill the time I spend cooking. That way we both spend the same amount of time. Sure you're up for that?"
In truth Alice was a little taken aback by the sudden hungry look in Ashely's eyes. Even so, it wasn't like it was one she hadn't seen in her own eyes in the mirror, or in those of anyone who had expected the pizza they ordered an hour ago.
"Cheese I can do, at least, if you don't mind avoiding the sort of average super market crap?"
Hopefully that wouldn't be the case, although judging by Ashley's reaction to Alice's taste in fro-yo, she was willing to be that she would take her advice on this too. She couldn't help but laugh at Ashley's train play, and it wouldn't have been half as fun if she hadn't joined in as she swallowed the last of her Greek yogurt.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice glared in the direction of Mason's voice once again. It seemed to be something of a regular occurrence and she wondered if she should just generally glare whenever she thought he was around. It might discourage the invisible man from making those awful jokes. Not that she really minded all that much, but it was the principle of the thing, in keeping with that principle she turned her glare onto Claire.
"I'm sure I want to be called Paladin. Anyway, I wasn't the one who broke a fork. That was all you…"
The dragon was still just as beautiful as it had been when she had seen it a few days ago. It had been breath-taking then, and it had lost none of its lustre. Persephone too seemed to be drawn in by the strangely luminescent artwork and Alice didn't blame her. It seemed as if the tattoo itself was breathing and not just the girl wearing it.
"No it's something different, I need to be prepared for it, like expecting an attack, Claire just seems to be tougher straight away. I have to be actively involved in mine."
Alice looked a little surprised by Persephone's offer. She thought her power was entirely to do with plants, not human beings, she definitely wasn't going to turn down the offer though, not if it meant finding out more about someone else's power.
"Sure! What are you going to do?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | At least Ashley hadn't found Alice's excitement embarrassing. Flattering was a much better response than the one she had feared. The thought that being a celebrity didn't make any difference helped as well. Even if Ashley didn't consider herself a celebrity she still was in Alice's eyes. After all, lots of people would know her name, maybe she wasn't super well known like Paramore or My Chemical Romance, but every artist had to start somewhere.
"Oh my god, please don't say you're one of those pretentious music artists who think they're Jesus or something?"
That really might have been a deal breaker. Although it was pretty clear that it had been a joke, so Alice played along with a mischievous twinkle it her eye. And who knew? Maybe one day she'd be able to hold Ashley to that promise. If she actually had a restaurant it would certainly help get people through the doors if a celebrity wore the menu as a dress. Some people took celebrities way too seriously. She commiserated with Ashley's sorrow at the end of her fro-yo, though her own was still half full thanks to her taking her time.
"An establishment that knows people would never leave if they were bottomless. Seriously, I think some people could live on this stuff. I almost could if I wouldn't miss cooking too much."
She nodded in response to Ashley's suggestion, mentally tallying up her affordable options in her head. It would make things difficult, but she'd feel worse if she sounded like a charity case.
"Yeah sure, I guess it's your turn to suggest somewhere then. Do you have any cravings right now?"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice had a sudden vision of Gordon Ramsay with slices of bread on either side of Ashley’s face. She couldn’t help but snort in laughter at the mental image, thankfully avoiding spraying her frozen yoghurt. That in itself would have been a sacrilege… and embarrassing of course.
Her face lit up when she recognised the title of the song. It had popped up at least a dozen times on her tumblr in the last few weeks.
"I totally know that song! Oh my god. I can't believe I know an actual celebrity."
She reddened as she realised she'd acted like some sort of star-truck teenager. This was a fair assessment. She was a teenager, and she was certainly a little in awe of the fact that she was in the presence of someone who was played on the radio and appeared on TV. Even so, it was embarrassing to just react like a child.
"Sorry, I guess you get that a lot. Must be pretty annoying…"
She certainly didn't want Ashley to think that this would just turn into another awestruck fan and celebrity kind of deal. Alice was a little awestruck that this perfectly normal seeming girl was turning out to be a serious musician. It made her achievements seem a little small by comparison. Even so, she didn't want that to happen.
