Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet didn't frequent this bar much, she never had, but she'd avoided it more since she'd run into the strange woman with the scarred face. It was on her racket, so she knew no one here would dare turn her in, but there was always a chance that some regular might decide it was worth phoning in the presence of a known criminal. People had been killed, and Sonnet showing her face in there too soon afterwards would have been asking for trouble, someone would have recognised her and called the cops. The fact that she hadn't actually killed anyone would hardly register, though she had been complicit in the death of the aerokinetic who had showed up looking for Evelyn.
They'd made a deal after that, Sonnet and the scarred woman. Evelyn would intimidate a city official, in return Sonnet would keep her ear to the ground about the Glasgowman. She'd done so, and even turned up some pretty interesting stuff. Before she'd been able to pass on said interesting information however, Evelyn had appeared again, this time on the news. She'd gone against a Hero, Gravity Girl, the one in the stupid pink outfit and taken her down. It was impressive, but Evelyn had taken the lives of several innocent people in the process. Her victory had not been without cost.
Now with an interest, Sonnet had kept an eye on things, until she heard that Evelyn had surfaced in San Francisco. Maybe she'd been looking to take down the big hitter of the Hero Program, Paladin. Maybe she'd just been trying to avoid the media and police attention that had come as a result of her confrontation with Gravity Girl. Either way, it seemed that San Francisco had been a mistake.
Evelyn hadn't even managed to find Paladin before she'd had her ass handed to her. Nobody knew who had done it but what little Sonnet had managed to glean from her contacts over there suggested it had been one of the few vigilantes still operating. She'd forgotten her after that. She'd repay her favour one day, but it certainly wasn't a favour that would earn Evelyn rescue from prison. She'd forgotten her, that is, until she'd walked into the bar Sonnet was drinking in.
Wanting privacy, Sonnet had taken a bottle of whiskey from the bar and retreated to a corner booth to drink alone, as she usually did. At least it wasn't in her apartment, there was an atmosphere of socialisation here. The scarred figure in the hoodie stayed at the bar, ordering one glass after another and downing them each in short order. Sitting up slightly, Sonnet gestured to the barkeeper. With a glance towards Evelyn, who was already putting away what might have been her eighth glass, the girl came over. Sonnet scribbled a note on a napkin, then handed it to a girl with instructions. "Get her a bottle of whatever that is, then give her this."
She'd folded the paper tissue, confident the girl wouldn't unfold it to read what was on it. Her eyes followed the girl back to the bar before she realised what she was doing and dropped them back to her glass. She looked up again in time to see the bottle and napkin being handed over.
I don't like owing people.
The girl gestured towards the corner that held Sonnet as Evelyn read the note, before focusing on her other customers.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Seeing that Rina had lost interest in her fries, Sonnet reached across the table and pulled the paper bag towards herself. They were cold, but they were calories, so after sprinkling them heavily with salt, she started eating them too. There was no real sense of enjoyment in it anymore, now it was more of a mechanical operation. She certainly didn't show any signs of suffering from the two greasy burgers and the packs of fries she had demolished.
Cleaning off her fingers with a paper napkin, she pulled a plastic phone from her pocket. The cheap kind drug dealers used as a burner phone. Flipping it open, she slid the plastic device across the table to the British woman. "Go ahead and put your number in there, we can sort something out from there."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet woke, bleary eyed. She hadn't made it to the bed or had decided that she didn't deserve to sleep between its silk sheets. She didn't remember which. Her head was against the cool glass of the window, now clear in the cold grey light of morning. Scattered about her on the carpet was the evidence of the previous night. She'd obviously supplemented the first two bottles of potent sake with several more. One, half-empty, was propped precariously against the leg of the glass coffee table.
She leaned forwards, awkwardly regaining her feet. One languid hand snagged the bottle from the carpet and lifted it. Tilting it to her lips, she let the burning liquid clear some of the fog from her mind. She gasped as she lowered the bottle, drawing in what felt like her first lungful of clean air in hours, though it too was masked by the strong flavour of the alcohol.
By the time she'd reached the kitchen the bottle was empty, and she dropped it into the trash. It clinked against the other bottles already in there. Closing the trash can, she finally moved across the kitchen to where her phone sat on the expensive countertop. There was one missed call. Kenshin didn't call repeatedly, you called him back.
She stared at the screen for a moment, steeling herself to actually respond. She would have to. He wouldn't be impressed that she had ignored him, that she had left a response till the morning after. There was nothing to be done now other than bite the bullet and respond. He would be angry, but to leave it longer would hardly allow things to cool off. Carefully she selected the number.
"Hello."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | The shorter woman carefully ignored the comment about working with Heroes. After all, Sonnet had rather more connections with them than she cared to admit, or in truth, wanted. Interestingly enough though, Raven was interested by the idea of a Hero that had no qualms about killing. That in itself was a concern. If it came down to it Sonnet would not be coming down on the woman's side in such a conflict.
"I work here, of course I have experience of him."
Rather more personal experience than she would admit to. She'd fought him, and fed him information, but nothing that would harm her own business interests. "And he is nothing like us."
Certainly not if Raven was really here looking for trouble. Tank didn't go looking for trouble, trouble went looking for him.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet retched, thin strings of acid falling from her mouth to sink slowly in the water of the toilet bowl. Gasping for breath, she leaned her forehead against the cool porcelain, before yanking her head up once more to retch into the bowl once more. There wasn't much left in her stomach to evacuate now, and all she got were a few drops of stomach acid as she dry heaved. She remained leaning over the cold material for a few moments more, before rolling to the side and sitting beside the white porcelain.
The gun lolled, only held half-securely in her right hand. It was cold now, with little evidence that it had been used. Impulsively she threw it away across the bathroom. It clattered metallically and slid beneath the sink. Staring after it for only a moment Sonnet closed her eyes and pushed her head back against the tiled wall, hard. It hurt. She did it again, the sharp pain sparking through the nausea that otherwise seemed to permeate her thoughts.
Awkwardly she pulled herself back to her feet, feeling strangely weak. There was sake in the kitchen. A minute later and she found that she'd opened the doors of the cupboard containing her booze, pulling out a green bottle and fumbling with the cap. It wouldn't open and she cursed in Japanese throwing the bottle across the small apartment. Gripping the countertop, Sonnet forced herself to calm down, at least long enough to pull out a second bottle and this time open it properly.
She raised the bottle by the neck, lifting it to her lips and pouring a more than generous measure down her throat, she almost didn't have to swallow. She grimaced as it burned her throat, then poured another measure after it.
Carrying the bottle, and a third, with her, the diminutive Japanese woman made her way into the lounge of her apartment. It was open plan, so it only took a few steps. She raised the bottle again. Already most of it was gone, and she could feel the faint buzz beginning at the back of her brain. She looked around at the fruits of her labours. The expensive furnishings, the huge TV she never watched, the bed with its silk sheets. In one corner stood a katanakake with her swords prominently displayed. The central, most proudly displayed one, had been her father's. He'd have been proud of her. Right?
She washed away the rising nausea with the last of the bottle of sake, dropping it onto the expensive grey carpet, before opening the second and raising that too. It was raining, rivulets of water running down the windows and obscuring the view she had paid so much money for.
The second bottle didn't last much longer than the first before joining its companion on the floor. The alcohol was beginning to have an effect, her empty stomach only hastening its work. Sonnet put her back against the window, feeling the cool glass through the thin covering of her shirt, and sank to the floor.
Her phone buzzed on the counter where she had left it. It would be Kenshin. She let it ring out as the warm arms of the alcohol enfold her in its embrace.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | The Heroes were so much a part of society now that it was something of a surprise to meet someone who had almost no knowledge of them. Less than a step out the door and they'd be able to see the gleaming white smile of Paladin on a poster across the street. Images of Glacia adorned city buses. There were fan sites dedicated to them. They were everywhere.
"Honestly? All of them."
Sonnet had gone toe to toe with several of New York's own Heroes. She'd put one of them in the hospital, then almost been put there herself by one a month later. She'd learned the hard way the cost of her arrogance, her confidence in her abilities.
"You should definitely avoid Tank though, he has very little patience for people like us. He has the highest kill rate of any Hero that I know of."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | "Simple, don't be an idiot."
Realising that wasn't exactly helpful advice, she continued, "Don't flash your powers. There's no law against it exactly, but the cops haven't exactly been quick to track down those responsible when metas are attacked. You won't find many friends here if you're showing off what you can do."
That should have been clear enough. Unless the girl was actually indestructible she would be risking more than she could handle. As far as Sonnet knew no one was indestructible, not even Tank or Paladin, and they were regarded as two of the toughest metahumans in the United States.
"That and if you cause enough trouble you'll bring the Heroes down on you, and trust me you don't want that, no matter how tough or strong you are."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | "No, it wouldn't."
Sonnet had no intention of serving as the young woman's babysitter while she was here, although it was eminently possible that she would have to do so anyway. Hopefully Raven was a fast learner, and Sonnet's management of her would be kept to a minimum. That said, the original reason Sonnet had been interested had been the brunette's apparent willingness to engage in violence. People like that often suffered from a lack of self-control.
"You've definitely picked an interesting place for that."
She'd have been better off choosing somewhere like San Francisco or Los Angeles. The west coast cities were famously accepting of metahumans, probably thanks to the presence of Paladin there, along with a number of other heavy hitters from the Hero Program. That and the MNRU seemed to build at least more acceptance of metas there. Sonnet wondered if attitudes towards her would be different in those cities. Perhaps they would, perhaps not.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Silently scolding herself, Sonnet ignored Raven's response to her apology, she never should have reacted like that in the first place. It just gave away the deep-rooted insecurity. It didn't help that the last person to actively doubt her due to her sex had tried to slit her throat. Well… succeeded. The scar on her throat seemed to flare back to life, despite its age.
Almost scoffing in disbelief, Sonnet caught herself before she actually let out the sound. Clearly this woman didn't pay a lot of attention to the news, or indeed her surroundings, if she didn't know how polarising metahumans seemed to have become. Sonnet's ability had saved her life, but it also had made her more valuable to Kenshin. Not in the way she would have liked perhaps, but it gave her influence. Other metahumans weren't so lucky.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | "Why? You disbelieve me because I'm a woman?"
Sonnet's response was curt, snapped. The question Raven had asked was one that she was used to, though normally from people that knew what the Yakuza was. She was unusual, most woman associated with the Yakuza were either so associated by marriage, or because they had been indentured into one of their… guest houses.
Most people questioned her status, some more aggressively than others. Her response was almost pre-programmed by now. Then she realised that it had been ignorance that had led to Raven's question, not doubt. She flushed slightly, then, gritting her teeth, forced out the words "sorry, old habits…"
With no more explanation than that she continued. "Your accent for one, but also your attitude towards normals."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet almost rolled her eyes. This girl really was new around here. There wasn't a serious criminal in the city that didn't know about the Yakuza. That said, a lot of newcomers to the criminal underground these days were people with abilities. Wake up with super strength and you suddenly thought you had the makings of a career criminal. At least the ones intelligent enough not to try knocking over a bank.
"Or something."
Eventually, when it became more clear that Raven really didn't know what she was talking about, she relented. "I'm Yakuza. We're more than your average criminal scum."
"You're British right?"

In the end everything collides 166 Sonnet shook her head, a faint smile on her face. "I don't do friendships. And certainly not lifelong. You can't trust people that far in my line of work."
She shrugged, "But I have money, and influence, I'm sure that I can find something that might interest you, even if it is just keeping you out of stupid trouble. With normals."
She'd finished both burgers now, but left the third for a moment as she picked at the fries. They were stale, clearly having spent too long in the fryer, then too long under the heat lamps, before finally having too much salt added and served to her in a cheap paper bag. She ate them anyway. Eating three or four at a time and licking the salt from her fingers.
"But I have a certain… code."
Lifting her chin slightly, she pulled the collar of her top down and to the side, displaying a fragment of the extensive Yakuza tattoos. "My organisation honours their debts."

In the end everything collides 245 Sonnet tilted her head a little to the side. She didn't exactly know what Raven meant. There were few communities of metahumans, and certainly none of them had made their homes in New York City, not after shockwave and then the later attacks. Metahumans in New York stayed for two reasons. They had nowhere else to go, or there was money to be made. That or some combination of the two. If she'd had a fully westernised upbringing she might have made the connection with X-Men, but that one had passed her by too.
She didn't respond to the woman's guesses. She'd given enough information that it seemed she was happy to share some of her own. One of her guesses had been correct, though Sonnet had no intention of narrowing it down for the other woman. After all, her ability might be potent, but it didn't exactly come with built in offensive measures. She had to provide that herself.
So she had the standard Superman package, super strength, flight, and presumably toughness as well. That made her beyond dangerous. Even Sonnet had to be careful of a stray bullet, but if this woman could ignore them it might make her a potent tool in removing some of the more irritating groups in New York at the minute. Several already sprang to mind.
Sonnet leaned back in the cheap plastic chair. "I can live with a few breakages, but what do you want in return?"

In the end everything collides 198 Sonnet shrugged at the question. It should have been fairly obvious, why else would she be approaching a metahuman with such a question? "We'd hurt people, metas mostly, but some normal humans. The kind of people that are likely to have already started the fight, and certainly the sort of people that no one is going to care much about. Sure, people will complain, but I doubt they'll be chasing us much."
Of course there came the obligatory question. What can you do? It always seemed to come up, with metas, with normal humans, everyone wanted to know what you could do. It seemed to have replaced the normal career question. Which at least made things easier in one respect. Even so, Sonnet was aware of how much difference information could make, and wasn't exactly willing to give hers up for free.
"I can get places fast. Really fast."
She looked the other woman up and down. She could fly, Sonnet knew that much, but she displayed an arrogance that came with more than just flight. It wasn't exactly the get out of jail free card that Sonnet's ability was. "So you fly, what else can you do?"

In the end everything collides 211 Raven hadn't even touched the burger, focusing her attention on the greasy fries in their greasier paper packet. This was not a place you went to for your health, it was a place you went to for cheap, and especially filling, food. Sonnet noticed that the woman didn't seem interested in the burger and pushed one of her packets of fries across to her. Pulling the burger over and biting into the greasy, slightly charred meat herself.
Grease oozed between her fingers, and she paused to wipe them clean with one of the half dozen napkins she had brought to the table. It wasn't good food, but Sonnet could not afford to eat exactly as she liked. Occasionally she treated herself, but her ability meant that her appetite was beyond expensive. This at least satisfied the craving without emptying her pocket.
Raven seemed surprised at Sonnet's question, and in truth, Sonnet was herself. Raven was clearly dangerous, in a way that suggested her power was much more than simple flight. Winding her up and letting her go might be effective at disrupting the operations of her competitors, but at what cost to her own operations?
Sonnet shrugged. "If you're interested, then sure, it's an offer. If you're not, consider it curiosity."
