Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet stiffens as the arms go around her. She certainly hadn't been expecting that. Evelyn hadn't seemed the type to connect physically. As the taller woman talks, Sonnet feels her body relax a little, the stiffness going out of her. A breath rushes out of her at the same time, one she didn't realise she had been holding. Awkwardly, hesitantly, she returns the embrace. There seems to be nothing else to do, that makes it OK right?
"I…"
She searches for the words, it's not often she's tongue tied like this. English might not be her first language, but she has spoken it since she was thirteen. This feels like she's struggling in a third language. "I don't…" She changes her mind… "Thank you…"
Alcohol is no longer clouding her mind. There is a faint haze in the background, the fuzziness of a hangover and a dull ache in her temple that reminds her just how much she drank last night. She's in complete control now, which means there's no excuse she can make as she reaches up to brush Evelyn's hair back from her face, just like last night.
She leans forward, just like last night.
And, just like last night, she kisses Evelyn.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Unfortunately the conversation does not stop there. Sonnet finds herself pulled from the distraction of her physical activity by a hand on her forearm. Sonnet's dark eyes meet the mismatched ones of Evelyn. It's not for long though and Sonnet pulls her own eyes away, pretending to be concerned about the level of water now in the sink as she flicks the tap off. Even after that task is completed she is still unable to meet the gaze of the other woman.
It's true, the Yakuza does not approve of such a thing. Crime may typically operate far ahead of normal society in many ways, but in others it is just as bound by culture. Japan is not as regressive as many of the other countries in that part of Asia, but like many Western countries too, there is still a history of prejudice. Added to that the traditional male dominated nature of the Yakuza and it is not a recipe for success in Sonnet's career, such as it was.
She pulls her arm away. "They would not approve."
Sighing, Sonnet turns around and away from the sink to meet Evelyn's eyes properly. "My position is precarious enough right now as it is without adding further… complications…"
That is very much true, Sonnet is not one to show weakness, but she feels that she needs to present something to stop this line of questioning. Several encounters with Heroes, and an unaccountable attack of conscience have made a dent in the businesses that Sonnet normally runs so efficiently. She doubts Kenshin would care if he discovered that she was involved with a woman, the grey man at the top of their organisation here in New York was rarely concerned about anything that did not affect business. Ando would have taken it as weakness however, and he was already making efforts to muscle in on her territories.
"This cannot leave my apartment."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet can't help but chuckle awkwardly at Evelyn's naivety. Smiling faintly, she turns back to the taller woman. "Physical intimacy isn't new. Not to me anyway. I've kissed… I've fucked…"
She trails off, realising that it's probably not the best topic to be getting into right now. Especially since just accepting the mistake would have made things much easier. She really does not want to have this conversation, and yet here she is with no apparent escape route, short of teleportation of course. "But not…" She nods in Evelyn's direction, "Never with… you know…"
Apparently struggling to find the word, she drags a hand unconsciously across the worktop, aware of the fact that she's not struggling for the word, just struggling to say it. "Never with a woman."
That doesn't seem so bad, but it's just saying it to Evelyn, and every woman has experimented before in her life right? "Yeah… the alcohol is just making things a bit harder right now. I haven't been that drunk in a while. A long time."
Not that it's that much of an excuse, but at least if anyone else finds out she has that defence. Finding herself edgy and jittery, she begins to clear things from the countertop. There are several empty bottles and a couple of plates left over from last night. She rinses out the bottles before dropping them into a box she keeps for recycling. She leaves the tap running, filling the sink so she can wash the plates by hand. She could have left them in the dishwasher, but she needs the physical activity to distract her right now.
"You can't… you can't tell anyone…"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | She was crying, and it wasn't until Evelyn asked that the first tear escaped and began to trickle down her cheek. She brushed it away roughly. "No." It was a poor lie, but she managed to stifle the flow before it started. "It's just the hangover." Evelyn's hand met her shoulder, resting there for just a moment before Sonnet shrugged it off. She hadn't wanted to, which was why she had to. As if to prove the lie of the hangover being the reason for her red eyes, she crossed to the sink, running the cold tap. It had the side benefit of moving her away from Evelyn as well. The cold water did nothing for her mood, and little for the confusion running through her head. She'd been raised to think this was wrong, but it hadn't felt wrong when they'd kissed last night, it hadn't felt wrong when they'd fallen asleep in each others arms, and it hadn't felt wrong when they'd woken together. At least not until Sonnet had realised what had happened.
"I just... I just need a minute OK?"
Mathias would have told her to trust her gut. That advice was why things were going so badly for her right now. First she'd been beaten by a Hero, then she'd somehow gotten into the habit of taking in strays and feeding them. Business was down, and Kenshin was asking questions. All because she'd started trusting her gut. That damn priest. It would have been easier to hate him if she hadn't felt a difference. So maybe this wasn't totally wrong...
"I'm... I'm sorry..."
Her voice is slow, halting, as though she's struggling with the language despite her fluency. "This is just... new... to me..."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | It is certainly unnerving, to be stood opposite an upright figure that in almost every other way seems to have more in common with an animal than a human. Sonnet wonders, not altogether idly, just how many of his behaviours actually resemble that of an animal as his lips curl back to reveal wickedly sharp fangs. Is that a threat? Or a very human smile on a face that isn't built to display it?
Her face becomes thoughtful as she tilts it to one side, "I don't know, in New York there's enough anti-meta sentiment that someone would come after you eventually. Power or not."
If anything, he must be perceived as an easier target. How many meta's wore their abilities on their sleeve quite like he did? Sonnet glances at the owner of the bodega, a skinny guy shifting uncomfortably behind the register. If anything, he looked more worried now that he thought there was going to be a fight in his store than he had done when it had just been two Japanese guys demanding money. That at least was something he would be accustomed to.
In the distance, but growing, comes the sound of sirens and she wonders just how long the creature before her might have been able to hear them. Surely those ears come with some benefits? So the gunshot has not gone as unnoticed as she might have hoped. Daiki should never have pulled his gun, and she will have to deal with him later. She begins to turn, she could just leave the kid, but the cops will pick him up easily. Innocent he might be, but she wouldn't kindly leave an out and out meta in their care. Her chest hurts, Mathias would definitely have some wise words of compassion to say about this.
"OK, I'm done posturing and dick waving. Those cops might be here for me, but they'll happy beat the crap out of you when they can't catch me."
There's no arrogance in her words, simply complete confidence and self-assurance. The cops don't have a hope of detaining her. This blue furred kid on the other hand… She holds out one of her hands. "I promise I can't kill you with a touch. Not one anyway…"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | It is strange, his face definitely seems to have what approximates expressions, but Sonnet would never have expected the face of an actual fox to be able to wear any sort of vaguely human expression. No way it's a mask then, this is the guy's actual face. She winces. Her power comes with it's own drawbacks, but at least they aren't as in your face as this one quite literally is.
She smiles at his aggressive response. Clearly the fight has his hackles up, if he has them that is. At least he doesn't seem liable to try and beat an answer out of her. For all her surprise at his appearance, Sonnet doesn't seem in the least bit intimidated by the tall blue fox-boy. The half-hearted way he attempts to insist on her response betrays more discomfort than he is otherwise letting on. Clearly he's new. Most people know by now that this is Yakuza territory, and she's pretty sure she'd have heard about someone like him if he wasn't too new in town.
"Or something."
Her voice is hoarse, and the ugly red scar at her throat works painfully as it moves over her vocal chords. The way she speaks is clipped and correct, with the almost mechanical edge that comes when someone is speaking something that was not learned as a first language. She's well dressed, the dark suit clearly from some kind of designer and the shoes she's wearing are probably worth more than the average paycheque.
"You got in the way of business kid. You must know that almost never ends well…"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet blinks in surprise. The way Evelyn is speaking seems perfectly in keeping with the cold, calculated woman. She often came across as something of a machine, and not just because of her prosthetic limbs. The way she talks about the kiss now seems even more in keeping with that, commenting on it as if it is simply just another data input. Yet the meaning is out of character.
"You…"
Sonnet shakes her head in a vain attempt to clear the fog from her thoughts. The sharp motion has the opposite effect, sending a shooting pain through her temples. She pushes the coffee cup away from herself so she can drop her forehead onto the cool surface of the countertop. That isn't any help either.
"You… uh… liked it?"
Shaking her head, she turns away. She had definitely been expecting some other reaction. Something closer to how she is feeling herself right now. She was expecting disgust, revulsion, not this strange, quiet appreciation. Running her hands through her hair, she lets out a long breath.
"The alcohol... yeah…"
What they'd done last night… That had been wrong… Right? Shaking her head again, she winces as another lightning bolt sears through her skull and brings tears to her eyes. She catches sight of the katanakake in the mirror and suddenly finds the tears harder to blink away. Frustratedly she rubs the back of a fist against her eyes. "Again? No…"
Two fists this time. "No it's… it's not… it's not OK. It's not OK…"
She turns back around to Evelyn, but her eyes dance around the other woman, unable to land on her. Her eyes are red, and it's clear that it's not only from the hangover. "I should never have… How can you want..?"
She had been more coherent last night when she'd been drunk. Now she's a mess.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | The gun shot brings Sonnet's gaze snapping to the combat in the centre of the store. That is the last thing they need. A good deal of the local precinct is on the payroll, but even they won't be able to turn a blind eye to a shootout right under their noses. Swearing in Japanese, Sonnet pushes open the door of the bodega. She's an easy target, momentarily framed by the sunlight pouring in through the glass front of the shop. She doesn't care, pointing a gun at her is little more than a pointless threat these days.
There's a skinny figure in a hoodie struggling with one of her men. The other has drawn his own gun and has it trained on the fight, apparently waiting for a clear shot, fearful of hitting his companion. Sonnet barks out a curt order in Japanese, the increase in volume making her hoarse voice sound worse. She follows the instruction with a swift chopping motion across her neck.
Reluctantly the man stashes his gun in his waistband, backing away from the combat. Sonnet takes two steps forward and grabs the shoulder of her subordinate, pulling him away from the skinny figure. A skinny figure with… fur?
Definitely fur. Blue fur. Either this is some kind of sick fuck in a costume, or it's the weirdest power she's seen yet. Staring in surprise at the lanky figure that towers over her, she realises that it has to be a power, no costume could possibly look that realistic. Clipping her employee around the back of the head, she throws a thumb towards the door of the shop. Throwing her and the fox guy a dirty look, he scrambles out of the bodega. She'll see him later, and deal with him then.
Right now she has… this to deal with… "You really weren't lucky were you?"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | The sound of a groan from behind Sonnet makes her raise her head, though she does not turn around. Instead she busies herself with the coffee maker, pulling out the jar of coffee and carefully spooning out the correct amount into the machine. Clicking the container back into place, she pressed the power button, the machine buzzing as it began it's process. The simple movements had proved distracting, but now they were over, at least until fresh coffee had been produced. Then she would at least be able to distract herself further by pouring it out.
Unfortunately Evelyn speaks before then. Sonnet turns a little, enough to catch a glimpse of Evelyn now on her feet. She halts, turning her gaze away and towards the bathroom to hide her colouring face. Instead she gestures down the corridor. Her voice is always husky thanks to the scar at her throat, but even so there is a catch as she speaks. "That way, second door on your left."
It seems that Evelyn is not immediately interested in sparing Sonnet from her company. Finally the coffee machine clicks, and Sonnet pours two cups. With little choice in the matter she turns back to face her guest, placing a filled coffee cup on the kitchen island and pushing it in the taller woman's direction. "Coffee."
It's not a question, and the statement seems to break the silence in a way their previous words had not. There is still an awkward air in the room. She glances up at Evelyn, finding the woman's face blank, betraying nothing of her emotions. Sonnet looks away, finding her eyes drawn into the inky blackness of her own coffee before her. She takes a sip, "About last night..."
She trails off. She doesn't particularly want to face the events of last night, but it is probably better that she clears it up now, before things can escalate. After all it was just a drunken mistake. Right?
"I'm sorry about what happened. I was drunk... it... won't..." She glances up at Evelyn's blank face, wishing she understood what was going on behind that scarred mask. "It won't happen again."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Business is good. Which is fortunate. Sonnet's mood is not. Her men had learned eventually to avoid her when she is in this kind of mood, and jump to complete any task she sets them. Her temper is short at the best of times, today it is worse.
Her mind strays once more to this morning, and last night. She'd been stupid to think that it could have had any other possible end. At least, she thinks as she strolls down the sidewalk, things hadn't escalated. She barges past a heavyset man, he turns, face reddening and mouth opening as if to speak, when one of her men puts a hand on his shoulder. A quick flicker of his jacket shows the gun tucked into his waistband and the man closes his mouth hurriedly. Things hadn't gone any further, and they wouldn't go any further. She'd be seeing Evelyn again, the woman had a strange habit of turning up when she wasn't expected, but she'd have to make it clear then that the whole night had just been a drunken mistake. It certainly couldn't be allowed to happen again.
Lost in thought, she stands back as her men go into the bodega. She's not needed, they know what to do. This has been her territory for a long time, and the people working here have learned better than to piss her off. She rarely bothers going with them in truth. Today she needs the movement and the action. Though it's probably for the best that she stays out of the shops themselves. Kenshin is already concerned about her, it would not do to give him more cause for concern.
She doesn't look up until she notices that there is a commotion in the store. Frowning, she starts towards the door. Perhaps the owner of the bodega has taken issue with the money required for his protection.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | The kiss sends a lightning charge through Sonnet's body. She's filled simultaneously with desire and revulsion. The confusing contradiction is enough to keep her there, in the moment. She's more focused on the kiss now than the thoughts that tell her to stop. Every part of her body says to keep going, while her conscious thoughts are screaming at her to stop. At least, most of them.
They're still in the lounge when the sun breaks in through the large windows. It should be cleansing and fresh, but in the aftermath of last night it's harsh and brutal. It reveals a scene that should be innocent enough. There are several pizza boxes, mostly empty, scattered across the room. A bottle of sake, mostly empty, is standing on the glass coffee table.
On the floor the two women lie entwined. Sonnet's arms are wrapped about Evelyn's torso, one leg hooked over her's at the knee. They are fully clothed. This fact offers little comfort to Sonnet when she finally struggles up from the depths of sleep to see Evelyn's countenance before her. She sits up suddenly, giving no thought to extracting herself carefully from the embrace.
One hand goes to her head, she must have drunk a hell of a lot last night to actually be feeling this hangover. She looks down at Evelyn again, then swears in Japanese. Finally climbing to her feet, she is relieved to find that she is at least still completely dressed, with nothing missing or undone. There's coffee in the kitchen, and she makes her slightly unsteady way in that direction, only briefly considering the bottle of sake on the table. That was what caused this mistake, she couldn't simply drown this one in alcohol.
Eventually she gets to the counter, pouring out the stale coffee there and starting a fresh pot. Slowly the smell of fresh coffee starts to drift through the apartment.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet is surprised to suddenly find Evelyn beside her at the coffee table. It's not an unwelcome one however, pizza or not, and she shifts slightly, both to allow Evelyn easier access and, apparently by accident, moving herself closer to the scarred woman. She manages all this while still helping herself to a substantial slice of pizza, mastering eating alongside whatever else she was doing having been one of the first skills developed when she discovered her ability. The pizza is good, hot, fresh, covered in melted cheese and with no shortage of any of the other toppings requested.
Making short work of her first pizza, she makes sure to leave a couple of slices for Evelyn as she reaches over and opens a second box. "Don't worry, I'm pretty sure I can eat all of them. And there's wings somewhere as well."
Probably in the bag that she'd dropped near the coffee table. She takes a bite of the pizza she's got in front of her now, rolling her eyes in pleasure at the flavour bursting in her mouth. "Here, try this one." Without thinking Sonnet offers the slice in her hand to Evelyn, moving it closer to the other woman's mouth.
Eventually, three pizzas and a box of wings later, Sonnet relaxes in the warm sensation that comes from having recently sated her appetite. She doesn't bother returning to the couch, in the pleasant drunken glow she is enjoying, it seems easier just to lean back against the foot of the piece of furniture. It's comfortable enough, and this way she stays closer to Evelyn.
Reaching forward, she pulls the other woman back to lean against the couch with her, though at this angle it has the effect of pulling Evelyn even close. Sonnet finds herself face to face with Evelyn. In any other situation it might have been uncomfortably close, yet they remain like that for some time.
Eventually it is Sonnet who breaks the moment, reaching one hand up to brush Evelyn's hair back. She can't explain why she does what she does next. Some unspoken instinct, a need inside her pushes forward, and she leans in to kiss the other woman.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | "Well you're in the right place for it." Sonnet's voice is still relatively controlled, though probably more as a result of her speaking a second language rather than because she's not feeling the effects of the alcohol. "Plenty of places to get drunk in New York…"
Sonnet pours more of the Sake down her gullet. It is good stuff, though it is certainly not intended to be drunk from the bottle. Sighing, she briefly debates getting out the proper glasses, before realising that at this point there is little reason to. Instead she tips the rim of the bottle back to her lips. She should probably slow down if she wants to remain in control, but she's aware that sobriety is probably already now receding into the distance.
Swaying very slightly, Sonnet becomes aware that it has been a while since she has had someone other than herself in this apartment. Evelyn is also the first woman other than her mother and the maid who has been a guest here.
She wants to sit down but doesn't, for some reason, want to move too far away from Evelyn. Instead she returns to her previous perch on the chair arm, resting the bottle on her leg. "Why don't you… get drunk more often?"
Sonnet has been wondering for a while. After all, it's fairly clear that Evelyn has more reason than most to drown her sorrows. She lost a brother, and whatever gave her those scars must have been agonising. Sonnet lost her father and the only reason she's not technically an alcoholic is because her metabolism burns off the alcohol almost as fast as she can drink it. It's taken three bottles of very expensive and very strong alcohol to get to this point. Most people would be considering alcohol poisoning and liver damage at this point.
She jumps up as her phone pings, announcing the arrival of pizza. A couple of minutes later she returns with several boxes stacked on top of one another. The smell of fresh pizza and melted cheese soon fills the small apartment as Sonnet drops two of the boxes onto the coffee table, then tosses one onto Evelyn's lap. She sits on the floor with one open in front of her, and promptly starts to demolish the deliciously hot pizza. The place is cheap, but the pizza is good, and it helps that it's fresh. "I'm pretty sure I…" She pauses to take another bite of pizza, "Keep these guys open by myself. My power needs the fuel, and pizza is one of the best."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet adds another pizza to the order, along with wings and fries, then sends it. She's used this app often enough that it's saved her delivery address, and she drops the phone onto the coffee table before leaning back on the chair arm. She lets her head roll over to the side so that she can see Evelyn properly.
She snorts, "Not as drunk as you are."
It's true that Sonnet is no longer as sober as she had been, the addition of the potent Saki in her cupboard pushing her over the edge and into the realm of intoxication. Even so, it's relatively clear that she's far more comfortable and capable in this state than Evelyn is. After all, Sonnet spends a great deal of her time with some level of alcohol in her system, and has the benefit of a metabolism that seems to burn off everything she throws at it. It's probably already started it's inexorable work on the booze she's drunk, so she should make sure to drink more if she wants to keep the buzz she's currently enjoying.
Reaching out, she pats Evelyn's cheek gently, leaving her hand there for just a fraction of a second too long before she draws it back and stands up. "Maybe I should catch up."
Still walking in a relatively straight line, she snags the mostly full bottle of Saki from the countertop. It's good stuff, not the best she has, but good enough to make getting drunker a pleasant experience at least. She tilts the bottle to her mouth again, drinking a smaller amount this time, but keeping a hold of the bottle rather than releasing it like last time. Letting it hang from her fingers, she pauses to press something on the screen of her phone, before turning and making her, still mostly straight, way back to Evelyn. Using the same hand that holds the bottle, she wags a finger. "No more for you until then."

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | "Only when he needed to."
In truth Sonnet's father had been one of the most powerful men on the east coast. He'd been the Oyabun of the Yamaguchi-Gumi on this entire side of the country. He likely still would be if it hadn't been for his illness. She closes her eyes briefly, seeing him as he had been, before his illness. It was he who had taught her how to fight, how to use a sword. She'd taught herself to kill.
What would he think of her now?
She turns away from the memory, and from Evelyn, as she starts opening cupboards looking for food. There is a lot, she makes sure to always keep a plentiful supply of calories. Her ability requires a fuel source, and she'd rather it was food than her own body. The food in her cupboards was eclectic, noodles vying for space alongside pasta while tinned tomatoes were crammed in next to tinned peaches. Not that she feels much like cooking.
"Fuck it. Let's just get takeout."
It would probably take about the same amount of time considering their current stages of intoxication. Fishing in her back pocket, she produces an iPhone and holds it up to her face to unlock it. Swiping through to the right app, she makes her slightly unsteady way over to the chair Evelyn is currently occupying. Balancing precariously on the arm, she extends the phone towards Evelyn. "Whatever you want."
