He very gently pushed her hand away from his chin. While her actions made him uncomfortable, he blamed her very forward flirtation on the booze. He knew very well that alcohol could greatly lower one’s inhibitions. In his mind, it was no fault of Adri’s; it was just the intoxication. He very purposefully did not acknowledge the finer, more uncomfortable details of their first encounter. He gave Adri a sad smile. ”Thanks, but, you don’t want this. They’re...they’re not fun.” “I am too fun!”He almost wished he could transfer his voices into someone else’s head. A part of him so desperately wanted to take her offer (though perhaps without the weird phrasing), but even if he could, he would never subject someone to the torment of his auditory hallucinations. Especially not Adri. She was his friend. “I much prefer your head over her’s,” Sasha said in her snotty voice. His smile widened, almost showing teeth. The stars had been Brian’s one and only comfort for almost his entire life. They were his coping mechanism, his anchor to reality. They were the one thing in his world that remained consistent. Consistent in their placement, consistent in the sky, a consistent source of guidance, and of course, consistently tranquil, consistently beautiful. He would love to share them with Adri. Her next words, though, froze him to his core. His blood went cold and his smile dropped immediately. “She knows.””You have killed people.”He balled up his fists, hands shaking. “She fucking knows.”Lily bumped her head against Brian’s fist. ”N...n…” Brian had always been a terrible liar. He unclenched his fists. ”Yes,” he said softly, looking at the ground. Lily nuzzled her head under his hand. He gave her a scratch behind her ear. ”But...it was an accident...I didn’t mean...I thought they were…” The images flashed through his mind. He violently shook his head, trying to chase away the bad memories. ”It was right after my powers...I was having an episode and…” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. ”It was in the past and...and I’d rather leave it there,” he said, lips tight. He looked up into the night sky. ”The stars,” he said softly. He looked back down at Adri, trying to force a smile. ”Let’s see the stars,” he said. He opened the door to his apartment. ”Lily, in!” The dog obediently trotted inside. He closed the door and turned back toward Adri. ”Um, let’s see here…” He clumsy approached her and, after some deliberation, picked her up in an awkward bridal carry. ”Sorry. Hope you’re okay with this.” The muscles in his legs grew until they were nearly three times their original strength. He bent his knees, and sprang up as much as he could, landing a little unevenly on the roof of the apartment building. He put Adri down and looked up at the sky, a small but genuine smile appearing on his face. They had a clear, unencumbered view of the stars. ”They’re beautiful,” he said. Adrijana Evgeniya

Adri’s reaction to his comment about her sister was...odd. Sure, Adri was an odd person, but this was odd even for her. There was a discomfort, a vulnerability that she quickly covered with a strange laughter. This was confusing for Brian. Adri seemed invincible, larger than life, like nothing could bother her. Though it seemed there was someone even larger than Adri. Someone so large that they spooked even her. Brian decided that he would not want to meet Adri’s sister. He laughed somewhat uncomfortably as she came onto him, memories of their last time together (what memories he had) flashing through his mind. There were some pleasant things. He liked the boy, the sex, the drugs. But something was odd about it, something was off. He didn’t know why, but there was something uncomfortable about that night, something shameful, something wrong. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. After some deliberation, he decided he was overthinking it. What happened had happened. No need to dwell on the past. ”Watermelon.”Brian squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head, forcing away the memory of that woman, what he did, the image of her head splitting open like a- He was wrenched out of those thoughts as the cab came to a stop. Despite his increased strength, he was gentle as he pulled Adri out of the car, helping her stay stable despite her inebriation. Brian knew very well what it was like to get drunk out of your mind. He used to do so on a nearly daily basis. He hadn’t touched alcohol since his stay at the EMBA. Not to say it hadn’t been difficult. Far from it. But he’d been able to stay sober for the longest time in his life. It was something he was proud of (and there were very few things that Brian was proud of). He gave Lily a pat on the head as she followed Adri out of the car. ”That’s a pretty low bar,” he said jokingly, a little smile on his face. “Um...disability. I got on disability,” he replied. “EMBA helped me out. Disability doesn’t cover much, but it’s something,” he said. ”Lot better than living on the streets,” he muttered. “The voices are not my friends,” he said plainly. ”Hey!”“They can friendly, but they’re not my friends.”“Meanie!”“Rude.”“I’d give anything for them to go away,” he said softly. Not just because they were often unkind and annoying (which they were), but he wanted to be normal. Just for once in his life, he wanted to be sane, to be like everybody else. It seemed so elusive, this holy grail of normalcy that he could never obtain. It was a nice fantasy, but a fantasy nonetheless. Brian looked up at the night sky as the cab pulled away; an idea popped into his head. ”Do you want to see the stars?” he asked Adri. Adrijana Evgeniya

Brian smiled as Lily slathered Adri in kisses. He sometimes felt sorry for Lily. The only company she had was him, and while it was obvious she loved him and he loved her, he sometimes felt bad for depriving her of interaction with anyone but himself. She didn’t seem to mind, but he still felt a little guilty. He was glad he found someone else that didn’t mind her wide tongue and drooly jowls. Who didn’t look at her giant body and imposing head with fear. He really did miss Adri. He never felt judged by her. It was nice. He furrowed his brow when Adri talked about her sister. It was not a side of Adri he was used to. She seemed...melancholy. He didn’t like seeing her like that. He wanted to make her feel better, but he wasn’t sure how. He wasn’t used to comforting people. ”You don’t need to compare yourself. You’re great. You don’t...you...you’re good.”“Nice one, idiot.”Brian gave a tight smile. ”If your sister can’t handle you like this, then...then she doesn’t deserve you.” That was probably the best advice he’d ever given in his entire life. He metaphorically patted himself on the back. He could use all the social victories he could get. “Good job, Brian!””Thanks,” he said. Typically, he’d feel awkward talking to his voices out loud in front of someone else, but for some reason he didn’t feel that way around Adri. He felt comfortable around her, a connection like he’d felt with no other. Birds of a feather flocked together, he supposed. Brian matched Adri’s grin as she declared that he had saved her. It had been a long time since he’d saved anybody. His (one could tentatively call) vigilantism had been pushed to the side as Brian had focused on improving his mental health. He’d forgotten how nice it felt to actually help someone, even if it was something as minuscule as picking them up when they were drunk. Eventually, the cab came to a stop in front of a rather run down apartment building. ”This is, uh...this is it,” he said, stepping out of the cab. Lily followed him. ”This is where I’ve been staying. It isn’t much, but...you know, it’s better than nothing.” He waited for Adri to get out of the cab in case she needed assistance walking in her inebriated state. He was a bit embarrassed taking her to his cramped, mortifyingly cheap apartment - especially after seeing her place - but he didn’t know where else to bring her. ”Do...do you need help?” he asked, holding out a hand for her to take in case she needed to steady herself. Brian was surprised how happy he was to see Adri, even in her inebriated state. He didn’t really have anyone else. No friends, no family, all he had was Lily (and the voices in his head, but he didn’t particularly enjoy their company). “Hey!” Clara protested. He missed her, even if their last interaction was a little...odd. He did things he wasn’t proud of, but he wasn’t in a great state of mind back then. He was doing much better now, and looking forward to showing Adri his improvement. He smiled as Adri hugged Lily. ”She can give you kisses too, if you want. You have to tell her first. She’s trained not to kiss people unless you tell her to.” Brian, however, was the exception to that rule. The first time they met, Lily showered him with kisses. It only solidified their bond. They were meant to be. Lily was being a very good girl, wagging her stumpy little tail at Adri’s embrace, leaning into her a little bit, but not too much. Lily was large - one hundred and thirty pounds - and unlike other dogs around her size, she was well away of her weight, careful not to crush people or knock them over. It was a blessing that Brian was large enough to hold her weight in his lap. Lily looked at Brian over Adri’s shoulder, a big doggy smile on her face, tongue hanging out of her mouth. Brian smiled back. Neither minded Adri’s burp. Brian got in the cab after Adri, pressing himself up against the door so she wouldn’t get squished between him and his giant dog. He gave the cab driver his address, as he wasn’t sure where else to take her. He smiled a little as she sang. It was nice to hear a familiar voice, even if it did reek of alcohol. “Ugh, she’s so annoying,” Sasha complained. "No she’s not,” Brian countered. Adri was far from annoying. She was fun, animated, lively. Her energy invigorated Brian. He felt he could be social for once, and actually succeed at doing so. He furrowed his brow. “What’s wrong with your sister?” he asked, concern in his voice. He slightly remembered Adri mentioning her sister the last time they met (that entire day was really just a muddled haze), but he didn’t know much other than that she was fairly well off. He suddenly felt protective of Adri. Did she need someone to protect her from her sister? Adrijana Evgeniya

Gay? She wasn’t gay; he knew that first hand...Maybe she was using it as a blanket term. Was she into girls? Or maybe she was just really drunk. That seemed the more likely answer. Bisexual. He supposed that answered it too. He didn’t even question the fact that she was banned from Lyft and Uber. It was too in character to come as a surprise. He nodded as Adri gave him the name of the street corner. ”Okay, I’ll-I’ll come get you. Just stay there. Don’t move. Please.” Reluctantly, he hung up. He looked down at Lily. She looked back up at him. He took a long, deep breath, again stroking the ridge between her ears. ”I can do this.” Lily licked his hand, and Brian gave a tight smile. “Ooh, are we taking a cab!?”Brian hadn’t ever used a cab before. He wasn’t quite sure what to do. After spending some time rehearsing what he was going to say, he looked up the number of the nearest taxi service and called. Nervously and with great difficulty he gave them the name of his apartment. “They’re coming for you.””C’mon girl.” He said as he stood up and grabbed her vest and leash. She obediently got up and stood still as he put it on. He sat by the window and bounced his leg up and down, giving Lily a tight hug as he looked outside, watching, waiting. As soon as the cab pulled up by his apartment, he stood and walked slowly out the door, careful to control his breathing. Lily was pressed tight against his side. He eventually made his way to the cab and pulled open the door. “No, no dogs.” The driver said. ”Oh, um, uh…” Brian pointed to Lily’s vest, hand shaking, the words “EMOTIONAL SUPPORT” displayed in large white letters. He didn’t like pulling the “Emotional Support” card, but unfortunately it seemed it was necessary. Lily licked Brian’s shaking hand. The driver rolled his eyes and sighed. “Fine. Get in. But I don’t want him drooling in my cab, got it?” Brian was too anxious to correct the driver on Lily’s gender or the fact that he couldn’t stop her from drooling. He simply nodded and slipped into the cab, Lily hopping in behind him, resting her behind on the seat in the middle and laying her front on Brian’s lap. “Where too?” Brian told him the street corner Adri had given him, and they were off. It was odd. Brian hadn’t been in a car since the last time he was with Adri. Unless an ambulance counted. He really didn’t want it to count. He watched the streets pass by, stroking Lily between the ears. She let out the same low moan. He had no idea how he’d survived thus far without Lily. Finally, they arrived at the street corner. He saw Adri; even from that distance he could tell she was highly intoxicated. He reached over Lily to the other side of the car and opened the door. ”Hey, Adri, here!” He said as loud as his anxiety would allow. Lily sat up straight in the middle seat, looking toward Adri. ”This is Lily. She’s my dog. I, um, I have a dog now.” It really had been a while, hadn’t it. Adrijana Evgeniya

Brian was six months sober. He hadn’t exactly been keeping track, but something in his head alerted him that he hadn’t had a drop of alcohol in quite a while. He’d been forced to go off it cold turkey in the months he spent in the MNRU. That hadn’t been easy for him, but the specialists there had helped him through it and gave him tools to use to avoid alcohol in the future. He’d been able to use those tools, and while it hadn’t always been smooth sailing, he’d been able to avoid any mind altering substances save the ones he was prescribed. With the meds he was on, he doubted he could drink any alcohol anyway, not without severe risk to his mental and physical health. Brian was sitting on his couch, scrolling through his phone, Lily’s large head laying on his leg, drool soaking into his sweatpants. He gently stroked the ridge between her ears. Her eyes were closed, and she was letting out a low, guttural hum. The couch was too small for both of them. Lily was a one hundred thirty pound Cane Corso mix and Brian was a muscular six foot four beef of a man. The couch barely fit someone of normal stature, not that it would be particularly comfortable for them either. The fabric was scratchy and there wasn’t much separating the creaky springs from the occupant. Brian had to stretch out his legs just so his bottom could touch the cushion and Lily’s right legs were hanging off the side. Still, Brian and his canine were comfortable in each others company. He was content, taking a day off from any exposure therapy and other such attempts to integrate into society. He’d been hard at work and he figured he deserved a break. It had been nearly a week since he’d had a day to just sit in his apartment and not do anything. This hiatus was long overdue. He imagined Lily was grateful for the lazy day as well. Brian knew he wasn’t easy to take care of, and Lily had been shouldering his anxiety at every outing. She deserved to relax too. Brian was making his way through a clickbait article, waiting for the promise of what this heroic dog did to save a litter of kittens when suddenly he got a call. Who could be calling him? Who knew his number? He didn’t recognize the series of numbers that appeared on his screen. Panic was starting to infest his mind. Eyes widened, breathing quickened. Lily perked up her head and nuzzled into his chest. He calmed ever so slightly. “It’s probably just some scammer.”“Answer it, answer it, answer it, answer it!””Someone is calling you.”Brian’s thumb hovered over the red button. Sasha was probably right. It was probably just a scammer. But the more he looked at the number, the more familiar it seemed. There was something nagging him in the back of his head. Before he could stop himself, he pressed the green button and put the phone up to his ear. He didn’t even have to say hello before the voice at the other end of the call spoke. Despite her confused greeting, he knew who it was immediately. It would be hard to forget that voice. “Adri!” Clara yelled excitedly. The details of their first meeting were a haze; still, some details stuck. Brian got embarrassed just thinking about it. He took a shit ton of drugs and then things...happened. Not the way he expected to lose his virginity. Not even close. But he did. He’d told his therapist about Adri, and she suggested he stay away from her. But Adri was his friend. Just because she was a bit different didn’t mean he should avoid her. She sounded drunk, and that made him worry, not about what people would do to her, but what she could do to herself. ”Where are you? I-I don’t have a car, but I can get a cab. I can come get you. Are you okay?” He asked, his voice quivering ever so slightly. He didn’t want his only friend to get hurt. Adrijana Evgeniya

Brian felt his face go red. ”Oh, sorry.” He didn’t know where he got the idea that he could possibly assist this man in his invention. He wanted to help, and so he tried his best, but, as always, his best wasn’t enough. Luckily, it seemed this man wasn’t bothered by this intervention. Quite the opposite. It seemed he was hardly cognizant of Brian’s presence. The more Brian thought about it, the more strange it seemed. This was not a safe place. Any person would likely be a threat. But this man wasn’t scared of him. He appeared to be hardly aware of his surroundings. Brian felt a growing sense of concern for this strange man. Was he okay? ”He’s crazy”He hoped so. Crazy, he was familiar with. Crazy, he could help with. The man could just be especially eccentric. Or perhaps he just had poor judgement and/or a significant lack of self-preservation. Not all strangeness was the fault of imbalanced chemicals. But he knew how to handle imbalanced chemicals. He didn’t know how to handle a person. It was something, however, that he was aiming to improve. So, with that goal in mind, he opened his mouth to speak when he suddenly heard a voice behind him. ”Ah!” Brian squealed as he jumped, the muscles in his arms increased inhumanly in size. Who was this person? How did they know where he was? What was that device for? What were they planning to do to him? ”They’re following you.””No.” He muttered. ”No, no, no, no, no.” His arms shrank as he reached down to give Lily a pet. She was perfectly calm, as usual. If Lily was calm, he reasoned, there was nothing to worry about. His racing, paranoid thoughts slowed, replaced with something more rational. Not everything was about him. In all likelihood, this person was there for the man working on the machine. He seemed much more important. Brian was likely just caught in the middle. ”Thanks for the reality check, girl.” He said quietly, giving her ears a scratch. She tilted her head into his hand. His head snapped back up as the man commanded him to come over. He obediently followed his instructions. ”Um, okay.” He said nervously, voice shaking, putting his hand on the handle, glancing between the man, the machine, and the person that had definitely not been following him. Which way was counterclockwise? He desperately wanted to help this man with the machine. He wanted to do what he was told and do it right, but he really, really, really didn’t want to do it wrong. As he waited for the signal and tried to work out which way a clock turned, he noticed something change in the man’s features. There was a clarity in his eyes. A recognition of reality in his features that Brian was all too familiar with. Brian gave him a tight, knowing smile. ”Snap back to reality, oh there goes gravity-””Don’t you dare.””...Mom’s spaghetti.”Sasha let out a long, exasperated sigh. Brian ignored the chitchat of his hallucinations. He was more worried about the man, whose face had suddenly filled with fear. He was immediately worried that he had done something wrong. Though his fears were somewhat assuaged when the man moved over to the other individual. Lily took a seat by Brian, drool dripping onto the floor. ”What on earth is going on?”Good question. Disability was great, but it wasn’t perfect. Make no mistake, it was much better than living on the streets. He actually had a roof over his head, and for once it wasn’t the roof of a psych ward. And while it did provide him with more than nothing, it didn’t provide him with much. Brian had money for a sparse amount of food and the shittiest apartment in all of San Francisco. It had enough room for a bathroom, a kitchen, a bed, and Lily’s miscellaneous toys, bowls, and a tattered mattress she’d adopted as a dog bed. Needless to say, Brian was feeling cooped up. ”Like a chicken.” Dennis teased. ”Bawk!” Clara added oh so helpfully. His therapist and psychiatrist both agreed it would be good if he took a couple more months before he went job hunting, just to make sure he was stable. With nothing to do, Brian had been carefully testing his medications, seeing how much he could take before it got too much, as well as trying that exposure therapy that’d been touted to him all his life. So far, the most he’d managed was a Starbucks when they started selling pumpkin spice lattes for the season. He didn’t buy one, of course, he didn’t have the money. Lily, despite the looks she got, was the greatest help he’d ever received. He doubted he’d be able to leave the apartment without her. At that moment, he was feeling restless, antsy, but he didn’t want to challenge himself. No exposure therapy today. No, he just wanted to go for a walk. Somewhere there wouldn’t be any people. Somewhere he wouldn’t feel anxious or paranoid. Somewhere nice and quiet and empty. ”Where will you possibly find somewhere like that in San Francisco?” Sasha questioned. ”I have an idea…” Brian muttered as he picked up Lily’s giant, red vest with the words ‘EMOTIONAL SUPPORT’ displayed in large, white letters. Lily perked up from her spot on the mattress, leaving a pool of drool where her head was laying. ”Come here, girl.” He called. She got up and pranced over to him, standing obediently and he put on the vest, her stubby little tail wagging as best it could. He smiled, giving her a pat on the head as he attached the leash. The leash was unnecessary; she would stay by his side no matter what, but it was illegal in some places to have a dog without a leash, so he put one on just in case. ”You are going outside.” Tect commented as Brian left the apartment, giant, drooly dog at his side. ”So exciting!””Your aura was getting stuffy anyway.”Brian scratched Lily on the head; she was perhaps the only dog he could reach without having to bend over. She tilted her head up a bit to lick his hand with her large, flat tongue and it made him smile. They walked past the shitty apartments, down an alley, through a street, down another alley, and on and on. As he walked, the buildings became more empty, derelict. He got to the part of town that had been abandoned years ago, the part no one dared venture. ”Disgusting.”It seemed Sasha hadn’t entirely lost her snobbery, despite the therapy and medications. That was fine though. He could deal with a bit of negativity from his voices. With Lily at his side, he could deal with anything. The aforementioned therapy and medications didn’t hurt either. He looked down at her again, and she looked up at him, big eyes, a large puppy dog smile on her face, her tongue hanging out of her mouth, drool dripping from her jowls. He smiled back at her, feeling a sense of peace and happiness that had eluded him for so much of his life. Then he heard a noise. ”What’s that?” Clara quivered. Brian froze. People weren’t supposed to be here. All the buildings here were abandoned. The only people that were here were homeless or junkies or both. ”People like you.”People that needed help. He’d put aside his side hobby of...well...one could very generously call it vigilantism. Ever since his release from the hospital, he’d been focusing on bettering himself. ”What do you think? Should I go check it out?” He asked Lily. She licked his hand and grinned back up at him. Brian took a deep breath. ”Alright then.” He started walking toward the noise. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was hearing at first. The closer he got, the more distinct it became. He could hear metal clashing on metal. As he neared a warehouse, he saw lights flashing in the windows. ”What in god’s name is going on in there?””Let’s find out.” He said, trying to hide the fear in his voice. Lily pressed closer to him; her warmth comforted him as he walked into the warehouse. ”Um, hello?” He called out. He followed the noise to a man working on what looked like extremely intricate machinery. ”Huh.” He said. He wasn’t quite sure what to make of this. It was far from what he what expected. ”Oh it’s um… He walked delicately towards the man’s workstation, an uncanny confidence spurred on partially by Lily, partially by the oddness of the scene. ”It’s right here.” He picked up what he hoped to god was a socket wrench and handed it to the man with a tight smile on his face, trying to hide the anxiety that was slowly bubbling up inside of him. Brian let the world swirl around him. He’d never seen anything so beautiful in his life. His arms felt like cacti, prickly and strong. He flexed his muscles, feeling the needles brush against him softly like fur. He giggled, slow and dreamlike. He turned his head to look over at Adri. She was playing with some spellbook. It wasn’t surprising that she was a summoner. It only fit. She was so powerful. He was almost jealous, but he was glad she was there to protect him. ”You’re a good friend.” He told Adri. Time passed, but it didn’t feel like it. Brian was with everything, including time. He was time. He was the universe. It was him and he was it. There was no separation. He wondered why he hadn’t realized this a long time ago. Things would’ve been so much easier. He held his hand out in front of him, then very slowly closed his fist. He could feel the universe flowing through him. It was amazing. It was everything. Then, something was different. A man. There was a man there. He looked at him, pupils inhumanly large, his grin widened. ”An elf!” He said, dreamy but excited. ”You found one.” He looked at Adri, she was shiny like an emerald. ”I knew I could believe in you, Adri.” Very slowly, he got up from the couch. The floor was moving, it was hard to keep his balance. He tripped and fell, catching himself just in time, giggling like a maniac. ”Oops.” He said through the laughter. With some difficulty, he was able to get himself back to his feet. He managed to make his way over to Adri, his giant figure encompassing her in a hug. ”Thank you.” He said. ”Sorry if the cactuses hurt. They’re pretty soft though.”After a second, he realized that Adri had said something to him. What did he want? He looked at the elf man. He was so beautiful. He felt another thing inside him, something new but familiar. What did he want? He grinned wider than he’d ever done in his entire life. ”I want sex!” He said. He stumbled his way over to the elf man, putting his soft cactus hands on his shoulders. ”Are you here for the sex?” He asked. ”You would be good I think.”Adrijana Evgeniya

The mall was a bad idea. Brian had been doing better. Much better. Therapy, medication, and most of all, Lily, had greatly improved his mental health. He found he was able to go into coffee shops and clothing stores with much less difficulty (not that he could afford anything in there). It was a big step up from public parks and grocery stores. There were still some issues, yes. He still felt anxiety, and the voices always got worse in high stress situations, but everytime he went to a place like that, it got a little easier. His canine companion had assisted the most with this; she’d been instrumental. It had only been a couple weeks and he could hardly imagine life without her. For perhaps the first time in his life, he’d gotten overconfident. He found all these other public establishments manageable, so he decided to take it up a notch. He didn’t realize until he was well into the building that he’d turned the notch up to eleven. He stood outside the mall - already quite a busy area - and took a deep breath. He looked down at Lily, the leash in his hand connected to the large, red vest with the words ‘EMOTIONAL SUPPORT’ displayed in big, white letters. ”You ready, girl?” She looked back up at him with her big, droopy eyes and licked her lips. He gave her a little smile before looking at the doors ahead. Taking a deep breath, he stepped inside. ”Yay! Mall!” Clara shouted. ”Oh, hush. You’ve been yelling about the mall every since Brian devised of the idea.” Sasha chided. ”’Cause I’m excited! We finally get to go to the mall!”“Shut up. It’s annoying.” Dennis spat. ”You shut up!””Please be quiet everyone.” Brian muttered, walking into the crowd. ”There are a lot of people.” Tect stated. There were a lot of people. Brian’s grip on Lily’s leash tightened. His jaw tensed. He could sense eyes on him. While Lily was a great help, she also drew a lot of attention. She was a large, traditionally scary looking dog (though Brian couldn’t possibly imagine her as scary) - a Cane Corso mixed with a pitbull and who knew what else - she was wide and muscular with big, drooly jowls and an enormous head. The emotional support vest didn’t help matters either. It was a worthwhile trade, but that didn’t mean Brian liked it. Still, he kept his sight set straight ahead, looking at no one, and walked deeper into the establishment. Brian’s request for the voices to stay silent didn’t stay in effect for long. They started chatting quite incessantly. Their voices overlapped, and as Brian walked deeper and deeper into the mall, they started making less and less sense. ”They are watching.””Look at the lollipop.”“Stupid fucking pricks killer stomping watermelon.””They are watching.””Such silly little scenes. How quaint. They dress proper. Look at the aura.””They are watching.”Similarly, Brian’s brain was buzzing. He couldn’t get his thoughts straight. Everything was loud. Everything was screaming at him. The walls, the people, the shops, the colors; the collective, buzzing noise was both monotonous and cacophonous. It hurt. He needed to get out, but he was frozen. All he could do was keep walking forward. Slowly. Robotically. He wanted to run away screaming, but he was trapped in his own body. Suddenly, he felt Lily pulling lightly on her leash. That was odd. Lily didn’t pull. He looked to see where she was going and saw a pair of doors leading outside. He didn’t question her. He let her lead him. Stepping outside, he found that he could breathe again. He didn’t realize he was holding his breath before, but it was obvious his lungs were begging for oxygen as he found he had to take a moment to catch his breath before he could take in his surroundings. Said surroundings weren’t much. It was a concrete area with a trashcan and a bench and most importantly: no people, no shops; quiet. Cigarette butts littered the ground. He supposed this was where employees went on their breaks. He sat down on the bench, trying to get his mind back together. The voices were still jabbering on, but they were lessening in severity. He started taking deep breaths, trying to center himself: mindfulness and all that. Lily sat down on the ground and looked up at him. Brian gave her a tight, pained smile, and pat the spot on the bench next to him. She hopped up and licked his face. He scratched her giant head, her stubby little tail started wagging. He gave his lap a pat, and she laid down on top of his legs; his large, muscular stature able to hold her one hundred and thirty pound weight. She drooled on his pant leg as he laid his head down on her’s and stroked her back, closing his eyes, breathing in deep, holding it, and letting out slowly, again and again and again and again. Brian looked around the room like he was seeing the world for the first time. Colors appeared before his eyes. Everything had an aura, and each aura had a meaning. It told him something about the objects’ personality. The couch was rambunctious. The ceiling fan was shy. He felt sorry for it. He knew what it was like to be shy. It hurt. But with these drugs, he wasn’t shy anymore. All thanks to Adri. He wondered why she wasn’t a psychiatrist. She could really help some people. He turned his head to look at Adri. “Your aura is red. That means you hurt people.” He looked off into the distance. “That’s okay. I hurt people too.” A smile remained on his face, but a tear fell down his cheek. “Baby.” Dennis said. He heard a baby crying close to his ear. He hoped it was alright. He was suddenly aware that Adri was talking. Her voice was sparkly and magical. ”Virgin.” He repeated the word in his mouth slowly, like he’d never spoken it before. ”Yeah, I never had...sex or whatever. People don’t like me I guess. It must be the smell.” He smelled like sugary mushrooms. He didn’t think that was very sexy. He furrowed his brow. ”No, only a guy can teach me. That’s how it is. Sorry, Adri. I’m really sorry, I am. You’re a good teacher.” He thought for a second, or as best as he could, mind drug addled as it was. ”First time...Well…” He bit his lip. ”I wouldn’t want the voices around. I don’t want the shadow creatures watching. It want it to be just him and me. But you could be there to help me out. You know a lot. You must look into the vortex a lot.” Brian looked back at the Vortex of Knowledge and smiled. ”You have a really nice house.” He said. Adrijana Evgeniya

”Woah.” Brian breathed, amazed as the ceiling started to swirl. It slowly turned into a vortex. At first, he was afraid it would swallow him and Adri whole, but after a while, nothing happened, and Brian relaxed again. ”We got lucky.” He told Adri, his voice light and empty. ”It doesn’t want us.” He stared into it, because he knew the longer he looked into the vortex, the more knowledge he would gain, and then he would be a genius and could save the world. He was somewhat annoyed, then, when Adri pulled his attention away from the Vortex of Knowledge to show him a...bag? What secrets did it contain? Where did Adri get a magic bag? “Well of course she has a magic bag you dunce, she’s magic.” Sasha’s warped voice scolded him through the water. ”Right, of course.” He said. He leaned forward to look in the bag. ”I like magic.” He told Adri. He furrowed his brow, looking in the bag. ”Will we catch him with the snake? He asked. ”Does it talk?”“You can speak to elves.” The snake inside the bag said. ”Oh cool.” Brain said. ”I want an elf guy. With nice...muscles. And skin that’s not oily. It needs to be dry...and smooth. Like a snake.” Brian tried to stand up, but immediately fell back down. ”Woah!” He felt like he fell forever. It was fun, like a rollercoaster, but one he wouldn’t be afraid of. He laughed for quite a while before he managed to compose himself and slowly, carefully stood up again, making the muscles grow in his legs to plant himself in the ground. ”Let’s go catch a pretty elf man. Then we can...sex...or something.” He giggled. Adrijana Evgeniya

He stood outside the doors of the building, wringing his hands nervously. The building was neither particularly tall nor particularly wide, but in that moment, it seemed incredibly large.
”You can do it Brian!”
Brian took a deep breath, and stepped forward to open the door, when someone else’s hand touched the handle before his. ”Oh, sorry.” Brian said instinctively, withdrawing his hand.
He person grinned at him. ”You here for the event?”
”Uh...yeah.” Brian said, voice quivering slightly, but trying his best to sound normal despite it all.
The person simply smiled at him and nodded before walking inside.
”Okay now I really don’t want to go in.” Brian mumbled.
”It would be beneficial for you to enter the building.”
”You should go inside, Brian.”
“Pussy.”
”Oh hush, you.”
Brian took another deep, deep breath, looking again at the glass door displaying an advertisement for their emotional support dog adoption event. ”Now or never.” He said under his breath, and he opened the door.
Exactly one week and three days ago, Brian had told his therapist about Isaiah. About their meeting at the dog park, the metahuman attacking the bank, how they chased after her and how he deescalated the situation (which his therapist praised him heavily for), but more than anything he found himself hung up on Isaiah’s dogs: Cesar and Athena. How happy he felt around them, how much calmer he felt in their presence.
Fortunately, it was his therapist that suggested the idea. Brian would’ve felt embarrassed assigning a treatment to himself. The therapist proposed that Brian invest in an emotional support animal. All expenses would be covered under the MNRU, so he wouldn’t have to worry about food or vet bills or anything like that. And, he said, that there was a nearby establishment partnered with the MNRU that trained emotional support dogs. They had an adoption event every other month. Their next event was in one week and three days.
One week and three days later…
Brian entered the building. He could smell the scent of dogs almost as soon as he stepped inside. Three people stood behind a counter at the back of the room. A friendly looking woman smiled at him. “Are you here for the adoption event?” She asked in a calm yet perky tone.
Brian simply nodded.
“Alright then, follow me.”
She led him down a long hallway, doors lining either side. Every now and then Brian could briefly see a person petting or playing with a dog through the windows. He didn’t stop to get a closer look, however. He didn’t want to be intrusive or nosy. Though he did note that all these people looked quite happy.
They rounded a corner and walked toward the end of the hallway toward yet another door. The woman stepped forward and opened the door for him. “Here we are.”
He hesitated slightly before walking inside, taking in his surroundings. All around the edges of the room were dogs, typically medium to large size, but there were a few lapdogs here and there. They sat almost perfectly still, tails wagging occasionally, leaning forward to accept a pet or sniff a hand or two. There were seven or eight other people in the room, four or five seemed to be pursuing the animals. Accompanying the potential adopters were what looked to be a specialists, giving them information on the animals as they stopped by.
As soon as Brian stepped into the room, a man who was standing vigilant in the corner of the room quickly walked toward him. “Hi,” he said, putting out a hand, “I’m Mark. I’m one of the trainers here.” Brian tentatively met his hand with his own. Mark gave him a firm handshake.
”B-Brian.” He said, almost forgetting to introduce himself.
“Nice to meet you, Brian.” He turned toward the woman. “Thank you, Kara.” Kara smiled, nodded, and left, letting the door close behind her. “So, did you have any kind of dog in mind?”
”I, um, uh…” Brian looked around the room again, but this time something caught his eye. A dog was sitting in the back of the room. He hadn’t been able to see her previously, someone was likely blocking the way. Now that he could see her, she stood out immediately. In a room full of Labradors and Golden Retrievers, she was certainly unique. Her body was wide and muscley, at least a third larger than any other dog in the room; her head was twice the size of any dog’s maybe more. Atop her large head sat small, pointy ears. The light shimmered off her short, dark brown fur. Drool dripped down from her large, dangling jowls which hung from her snout. She sat alone in the back of the room, staring off into the distance with her big, droopy, chocolate brown eyes.
”She’s scary.”
”She’s disgusting.”
”She’s fucking ugly.”
She was perfect.
He slowly crossed the room, walking as if all the other dogs didn’t exist, Mark trailing close behind. She turned to look at him as she noticed him walking toward her, her short, stubby tail wagging as he approached. He barely had to kneel down to pet her. He started gently scratching her head. A low, grumbly hum emanated from deep within the dog as she leaned her head toward his hand.
“That’s Lily. She’s a Cane Corso mix. One hundred and thirty pounds.” Mark informed him.
“Hey Lily.” Brian smiled, continuing to scratch her gigantic head.
“She’s two years three months. I’ve worked with her personally ever since she was a little pup.” Mark said with some pride.
Brian could hardly imagine how cute she must’ve been as a puppy.
”She looks like those evil dogs they have in movies.”
“She’s been here for a while. Cane Corso ain’t really the typical breed for an ESA.”
Brian sat down in front of Lily and started scratching her jaw. She leaned forward to sniff his face and gave him a gentle lick on the chin.
“She likes you.” Mark grinned. “You okay with getting licked? They ain’t really supposed to do that unless you give the okay.”
“Yeah. I don’t mind kisses.” He found himself saying, his face reddening slightly at his choice of word, but he found his anxiety was quickly calmed as he stroked Lily’s head, her gentle, brown eyes looking into his.
“Kiss!” Mark commanded. Lily turned her head, giving Brian’s arm a couple kisses with her big, sloppy tongue before returning to her position, licking her lips. Brian’s smile widened into a grin.
”Lily is a good dog.” Tect said in its robotic, emotionless voice.
“Well I gotta say, this seems like love at first sight.” Mark said, grinning proudly. “Wanna take her into a private room, give her a spin?”
”Yeah.” Brian said, not quite comprehending his words at first. ”Yeah sure, um, absolutely.”
Mark lowered his voice. “I have to inform you that she's got a little bit of pit bull in her. I don’t know if that affects your decision at all...”
“No. Not at all.”
“Alright then. Lily, come!” Mark commanded. Lily immediately got up and walked to Mark’s side. “Come on.” He said to Brian. Brian got up and Mark led the two into one of the rooms Brian passed on his way down the hall, closing the door behind them as they stepped inside.
”She’s gonna rip your throat out.”
“Alright, so we’re gonna go over a couple commands.” Mark said, turning toward Lily. “Sit!” Lily sat down. “Up!” Lily stood back up. “Good girl, Lily.” He praised. Lily wagged her tail. “Alright, now you try.” He said to Brian.
“Lily.” Brian said. The dog turned toward him, her warm, droopy eyes meeting his. “Sit.” He felt the urge to add a ‘please’ to his command, but thought better of it. She sat down. “Um, uh...up.” She stood back up. ”Good girl, Lily. Good girl.” He gave her a hearty scratch on the back as she vigorously wagged her tail, her bottom wiggling along with it.
Mark’s wide smile matched Brian’s. “Alright, now here’s something else along the same lines. Lily!” She turned back toward him. “Down!” She laid down. “Up!” She stood back up. “Good girl.” He praised, her tail wagging. “You’re turn.” He told Brian.
”Lily!” Brian called. ”Down!” Lily laid down, her tail continuing to wag. ”Up!” She quickly stood back up. ”Good girl.” He said softly, scratching behind her ear, producing a low moan from her.
“Good, very good!” Mark said. “Now this one’s a fun one. Lily!” She turned toward Mark. He leaned down slightly and put a hand out. “Shake!” Lily placed her paw in his open hand. “Good girl!” He ruffled her head. “Give it a shot!” He told Brian.
”Lily, shake!” Lily turned toward him and stuck a paw out in the air, but it simply fell back to the ground.
“You need to put your hand out.”
”Oh, um, sorry.” He apologized to Lily. He bent over and held his hand out. ”Shake!” She put her paw and his hand. Brian grinned, shaking her paw up and down as if she were a person. She licked her lips, then suddenly shook her head, jowls flapping, slobber flying. Brian laughed a little, guarding his face with his free hand as he gently dropped her paw with his other.
“Yeah, she does that.” Mark said. “Hope you don’t mind.”
”Not at all. It’s…”
“Disgusting”
“Icky”
”...cute.”
“Well that’s the first I’ve heard it described like that, but I’m glad to hear it!”
They went over a few more basic commands, Lily always wagging her tail when it was Brian’s turn to give her an order. Brian found that he couldn’t stop smiling. It was so elating to feel the unconditional love and adoration he felt from Lily. He couldn’t recall ever receiving that from anybody. He also found his anxiety was greatly diminished. Typically in this kind of situation with a stranger, his mind would be buzzing, he’d be second guessing everything he said, but with Lily he felt calm. He felt - almost - normal.
“Alright, now for the really fun stuff. Lily, come!” Lily walked over to his side. “Heel!” Mark started walking around the room, Lily walking right by his side. “You don’t technically need to say heel, she’ll stay by your side no matter what, but heel’s to command we usually use so.” He shrugged his shoulders. He picked up the pace as he talked until he was practically jogging, Lily stayed right by his side the entire time. Then finally he slowed and came to a stop across the room from Brian. “Now you call her over.”
“Lily, come!” The dog immediately pranced over to his side. “Good girl.” He praised, giving her a scratch on the head. She looked up at him with her big, droopy eyes and licked her lips. ”Heel!” He said as he started walking around the room, Lily staying by his side, even as he picked up the pace and slowed down. Eventually he came to a stop, bending over slightly to give Lily a little pet on the head.
“Excellent! You’re supposed to have her on a leash out in public, but as you can see, you don’t technically need one. Does he girl?” He walked over to her and gave her a little scratch behind the ear. “Now I love this one. Go over there and sit down.” He said, pointing across the room.
”He’s ordering you like a dog.”
Brain obeyed, walking over to where Mark pointed and sitting down, criss-cross.
“Now pat your lap.”
Brian gave his lap a pat and Lily pranced over to him, sat down next to him, and leaned against him.
“Now give her a big ol’ hug!”
Brian wrapped his arms around Lily and she leaned into the embrace.
“Anytime you feel overwhelmed or anxious or just feel like you need a friend, just give your lap a pat and she’ll come over and snuggle!”
Brian grinned, ruffling Lily’s head.
Suddenly, the door to the room opened and Kara poked her head in. “Mark? I need you for a bit.”
“Alright, I’ll be right back. You two stay there.” He told Brian and Lily as he left the room.
Brian gave Lily a vigorous pet. She emitted a low hum as he scratched her fur. Suddenly, an idea popped into his head. Lily was big, but Brian was also quite big. He looked down at his lap. She could fit. Kind of. He pat his lap again. ”Come on!” He urged. She gave him a look. She seemed confused. ”Come on! Up here!” He pat his lap some more. She delicately put a paw on his leg. ”Good girl! Come on! Don’t worry, I can take it!” She placed her paw in the space between his legs. ”Come on girl! Come on!” She slowly stepped onto his lap. ”Good girl! Down!” She laid down, managing to fit about two third of her body on his lap. The feeling of her large, warm body on top of his legs, her side pressed against his stomach, was so comforting and relaxing and overall elating. Brian could swore he’d never been happier in his life. ”Good girl!” He praised, scratching her head. ”Good girl!” He smiled wide, placing his face close to hers. ”Kiss!” She gave him a couple licks on the chin and one on the nose as he giggled. ”You’re such a good girl.” He cooed, rubbing her head. ”Such a good girl!” She rolled over on her back, her tongue hanging out the side of her mouth. Brian laughed and gave her more words of praise, scratching the jagged white spot on her belly.
The two continued like this for a while. Brian found a spot on her side that made her hind leg kick and her body go stiff. At first he thought he might’ve done something wrong, so he stopped, but she looked up at him, and there was something in Lily’s face and body language that told him that she wanted him to keep petting her there, so he resumed. She hummed as she stretched out her body on his lap, her leg kicking furiously against her side, Brian smiling wide.
“Well look at you two.” Mark said, amused.
Brian froze. He hadn’t even noticed Mark enter the room. ”Um, I’m-I’m-I’m sorry, I-I...” Lily rolled back over on her belly and licked underneath his chin. He gave her a few strokes and it calmed him down a bit.
“No worries.” Mark said. “I didn’t train her to sit on people’s laps ‘cause I thought she was too big, but I think you’re big enough to handle her. I mean, look at her, she almost fits!” Lily looked up at Mark, mouth open, tongue hanging out. “As long as you’re happy with it, I got no problem with her laying on your lap.”
”Oh, okay, good.” Brian said, relieved. He gave her a scratch on the head and she tilted her head up to meet his hand, closing her eyes and humming.
“So is Lily your choice?”
”Absolutely.” Brain said, nodding his head, not taking his eyes off the dog.
“Good. Honestly, you two seem like a match made in heaven. I couldn’t be happier.” He walked up to them. “But you know, owning an emotional support dog is a two way street. She’ll take care of you, but you gotta take care of her.”
Brian nodded. His therapist had given him a whole spiel about the responsibility of being a pet owner. In fact, he said the responsibility would probably be good for him. Having someone to take care of, having a purpose, could do wonders for his mental health.
Mark mirrored his therapist’s sentiments practically word for word. Brian carefully took it all in, but he didn’t take his eyes off Lily, he didn’t stop petting her, and a smile never left his face.
“So, you ready to take her home?”
”Yes!” Brian said, a little too excitedly for his liking, though Lily’s presence kept him calm.
“Alright then, follow me.”
Brian moved to get up and Lily immediately got off his lap. ”Good girl.” He praised, giving her a pat on the back as he stood. There was a wet spot on his leg where Lily had rested her head, but he didn’t mind. He started walking toward the door. ”Lily, come!” Lily immediately got in step with him as he followed Mark out into the hallway. He led them past the front desk.
“Oh is Lily getting adopted?” Asked one of the other women behind the counter.
“Sure is!” Mark grinned.
“Oh, finally! Good for her!”
He led them into a side room. Inside was a wooden table and some chairs, stacks of paper atop the table. Lining the walls were various leashes, collars, and red vests of all shapes and sizes with the words ‘EMOTIONAL SUPPORT’ displayed in big white letters, all hanging from little hooks. At the back of the room was a mysterious little machine. “So you’re Brian...Harris, right?” Mark said as he sat down.
”He knows your name.”
”Um, yeah.” Brian said, sitting down at the chair across from Mark. Lily took a seat by Brian.
“Your therapist, Jon…” he pulled out a piece of paper and scanned it momentarily, “Farish. He said you’d be coming. He filled out most of the paperwork ahead of time.”
”Oh, good.” Brian said.
“I just need to go over some things with you real quick, and you two can be on your way.” Mark went into exhaustive and carefully rehearsed detail about the legality of owning an emotional support dog, where he could legally take her, what establishments would have to accept her and what establishments could refuse her entrance, when she needed to be wearing the vest and when not, and on and on and on and on. Brian did his best to listen, but he found the amount of information overwhelming. He stroked Lily’s head to calm himself down. She laid her ears back as he pet her. Mark had Brian fill out some paperwork as he talked; just a few pages detailing his address, contact info, identity, etc. Finally, Mark took the papers in his hand and shook them into a neat stack. “Alright, that’s the jist. If you have any questions feel free to ask your therapist or just call here, we’ll do our best to answer them.”
”Okay.”
He put the papers back on the table and got up, walking over to the red vests, picking up the largest one by far. “This is her’s. Had to get it specially made.” He walked over to Lily and knelt down. “Okay, so this is how you put it on.” He showed him step by step how to take the vest on and off, then had Brian do the same. He fumbled a bit, but Mark guided him, and after a few tries, Brian easily got the vest on and off of Lily, she stayed perfectly still during the entire endeavor, save for the shake of her head, sending slobber flying everywhere. “See, easy!” Mark said as Brian successfully took the vest on and off of Lily. “Now you get to choose a collar. We have a bit of a limited selection for a dog her size, but…” he walked over to the wall lined with collars, gesturing to the last four, the largest of the bunch, “I’m sure you’ll find one you like.”
Brian walked over to the selection, pursing his lips slightly as he looked them over. There was a plain red one, a plain blue one, a light green one decorate with little white squiggles, and...
”Ooh! That one, that one!”
A slightly faded out collar with a navy blue background decorated by a row of pink hearts. He picked it up.
“You like that one?”
”I think it suits her.” Brian said.
“I think so too. You know how to put it on?”
”Uh…”
“Come here, I’ll show you.”
He brought Brain over to Lily and showed him how to put on the collar. It was like a belt, he explained. Brain copied him pretty easily, hooking the collar around her thick neck, setting it on the last loop.
Mark stood back. “Looks cute on her.”
”Yeah, it does.” Brian agreed.
“Alright, one last thing, then we can send her home with you. We need to make a tag.” He walked over to the machine, putting his arm on top of it. “That’s what this baby is for. Come here.” Brian walked over to him. Mark showed him the screen. “All you gotta do is put in the dog’s name, your phone number, and your address. Look, you even get to choose the design!” He showed Brian how to scroll through the various designs he could select for the tag.
Brian stepped up to the screen. It didn’t take him long to choose a design. A black tag with a red heart, the text displayed in a curly white font.
”It certainly matches the collar."
Brian input Lily’s name, his phone number, and his address. ”Um, now what do I do?”
“You just push that finish button right there.” Mark pointed to the corner of the screen. Brian pressed the button. The machine rumbled for a bit, then the tag he’d seen displayed on the screen popped out of a little slot below. Brain picked it up, it was smooth, solid, laminated. “Like magic, innit? Here, I’ll put it on.” Brian placed the tag in Mark’s outstretched hand. Mark knelt down in front of Lily, placing the tag on the collar. “Alright, now you just put that vest back on her, attach the leash, and you’re good to go.”
Brian put the vest back on, petting her head as he did. Mark handed him a leash. “They’re all the same, so no choice there.” It was thick, black, and leather. It felt good to hold. “You know how to hook it on?”
”Yeah, I think I got it.”
“You just hook it on to the vest there, oop, you got it!” He said as Brian successfully attached the leash to the vest. Brian stood up, holding the leash in his hand. “You feel good?” Mark asked.
”Yeah. Yeah, I do.” Brian said, smiling down at Lily. She looked up at him, giving him her own puppy dog smile.
“Then you’re ready to go! Here, I’ll lead you out.”
”Lily, come!”
Mark walked Brian and Lily to the door, but before they left, he crouched down by Lily, petting her ears. “You be a good girl, you hear? You give him lots of love.” Lily licked him on the nose. Mark smiled and stood back up. “You treat her good, Brian!”
Brian smiled and nodded. ”Thank you.” He awkwardly added at the last second as he exited the building. He took a deep breath and looked down at Lily. ”You ready?”
She licked her lips.
He started walking back toward his apartment. Immediately, he felt embarrassed. Lily was basically advertising that he was mentally unstable. Lily seemed to sense his discomfort, however, and walked closer to Brian so that she brushed up against him. Brian smiled and scratched her head. Maybe he could take the advertisement, the extra attention. Maybe it wasn’t so bad.
Finally, they reached his apartment and stepped inside. Technically, dogs weren’t allowed in his apartment building, but his therapist had informed his landlord of Brian’s intent to get an emotional support dog, and he was told that, by law, residences needed to accept emotional support animals no matter what. No matter how big they were or how much they slobbered.
Inside his tiny, tiny apartment, Brian had an assortment of canine essentials: a water and food bowl, several dog toys, and a dog bed, all paid for by the MNRU. Brian removed the vest from Lily’s back. ”Free!” He said. It was one of the commands Mark had taught him. Lily left his side and began exploring the apartment. Brian wasn’t sure where to put the leash and vest, so he just placed them gently in the corner. He sat down on his shitty little couch as he watched Lily explore with joy and amusement. He had a dog now! He never thought he’d be able to own an animal in his life, but he had a dog! A freaking dog!
Lily walked over to the dog bed, circled around on it, and tried to lay down. She was two sizes too big.
“We’re gonna need to get you a bigger dog bed." Brian said, amused.
Lily got up and walked over to the couch, standing in front of the empty spot next to him, wagging her tail, looking up at him expectantly.
”You can come up!” He told her, patting the spot next to him. She jumped up on the couch. Brian smiled and scratched her neck. She gave her low, throaty hum, leaning into his hand. After a moment, she laid down, placing her head on Brian’s leg. Brian smiled wide and wrapped his arms around Lily, placing his head on top of her’s. ”I love you, Lily.”
She gave him a kiss.

Never in his life did Brian think he would ride on a dog. Even before he got his powers, when he was just a stick of a human being, he was still rather tall, even as a child, leaving him far too large to sit atop even something like a Great Dane or a Newfoundland or a Cane Corso. And after he got his powers and his muscle mass quadrupled overnight, that idea was relegated to his insane fantasies (sometimes literally). But here he was, riding atop a roided out pitbull. And he had to admit, even though his leg was bleeding and in pain, it was pretty fucking... “...AWESOME! THIS IS AWESOME! WOOO!”“Pipe down, will you? We’ve got a job to do.””WOOHOO! YEAH! THIS IS AMAZIIIIINNNNNGGGG!””Oh goodness.”Clara continued to hoot and holler despite Sasha’ protests, and Brian found himself celebrating alongside Clara, at least internally. They were quickly gaining on the woman. It wasn’t long before they were right on top of her. Isaiah whistled to signal his canines into action. Then the truck came along. He flinched as the vehicle collided with Athena. Isaiah’s attention shifted immediately to the injured canine. Cesar followed suit at his command. Brian had to make a split second decision. Help Isaiah or get the woman. Well, he wasn’t sure he could help an injured metadog, but he could catch the metahuman. So, diverting all his strength to his arms, he catapulted himself off of Cesar before the dog could change trajectory, flying through the air, aiming for the woman. “You’re gonna squish her you psycho.” He landed right on top of her with an ”Oof” from both parties, her mask slipping off in the process. Brian scurried to pin her hands to the ground. Immediately, the woman went into a series of expletives, explosions going off beneath her finger, singing the concrete but otherwise not doing much damage. ”Hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m not...I’m not gonna hurt you.” He tried desperately to convince her. ”Get off me, you…” She proceeded to call him a series of rather nasty names. ”Okay,” he said softly, ”okay.” He gently removed his body from atop hers, but he kept a hand around her wrist so she wouldn’t get away. She stood up and pointed a finger at him. Brian flinched as a little flash went off in front of her fingertip. “Her powers have become significantly less potent.””Yeah, she must’ve worn her powers out.” He responded “Who the fuck you talking to?” She demanded. Brian’s face went red as he gave her a small smile and said, ”The voices in my head.”The woman gave a little laugh. “You fuckin’ schizo, huh?” ”Yeah, basically.” He scratched the back of his head with his free hand. He typically wouldn’t divulge this information to anyone, and he still felt embarrassed talking to this woman about it, but he needed to convince her that they were on the same side. That she was like him and vice versa. ”Look, I know you’ve probably heard this a thousand times before, but I can help you.”The woman scoffed. ”What...what’s your name.”“Why would I tell you?” ”I just, I wanna know. My name’s Brian.”She pursed her lips together and looked away, thinking for a second before curtly responding, “Cynthia.” ”Cynthia.” Brian repeated, smiling. ”Cynthia, I...I know what it’s like. I used to do the same thing. Steal from banks. For alcohol.”“You just gonna tell her your whole life story?” Dennis derided. ”It numbed the voices. The...the pain. The depression and, and, and anxiety and…” He found himself stumbling over his words. He shook his head. ”You get it. I know you do.”Cynthia pressed her lips together and looked down at the concrete. ”I...I was lost. For a very long time. Until I...I…” He took a deep breath. ”I tried to kill myself, and went to the MNRU.”“What’s that?” ”It’s a...place. A place that helps metahumans. Metahumans like us.”“Your rich daddy pay for that or somethin’?” ”It’s free. Completely free. Government sponsored.”“And you’re sayin’ I should go there?” She said, resistance in her voice. Brian looked down at his shoe for a moment, reliving past memories, before looking back at her. ”I know you didn’t want to rob that bank, Cynthia. And I know it was your first time.” The fact that she didn’t know where the safe was was fairly telling. “You some kinda mind reader now?” ”You were desperate, and I know what it’s like to be desperate. It hurts. A lot.”Cynthia twisted her mouth and looked down, picking at one of her lesions with her free hand. ”Let me help you.” He practically pleaded. ”Please let me help you. I won’t force you, I promise. Look.” He released his hold on her wrist. ”See?” There was a tense couple of seconds as Cynthia rubbed her newly freed wrist and looked around, her face configured in thought. Brian held his breath, his eyes were wide, silently begging her to stay. Finally, she sighed and looked down at her tattered shoes, rubbing the back of her neck. “Where too?” She muttered. Brian released the breath he’d been holding. “Follow me. I’ll take you there. I know the staff. I’ll help you and make sure you’re comfortable.” Brian hobbled back to Isaiah, his uninjured leg tripled in size, carrying most of his weight, Cynthia following sheepishly in tow. Luckily, Isaiah wasn’t too far away. “Isaiah, this is Cynthia." He said. ”We’re taking her to the MNRU. They can help Athena there too. They know a lot about metahumans. I’m guessing they can help metadogs. And my leg.” He said, looking down at the wound. It was starting to clot up, but it was still grisly to look at, not to mention quite painful. ”How is Athena? He asked. Isaiah Moore

Looking closer at the woman, Brian noticed some familiar signs. Jagged, rotten teeth, lesions on her pale, sickly skin, dark circles under the eyes. She was an addict, obviously from a lower class background, thus the uneven teeth; her family likely couldn’t afford a dentist or orthodontist. The same went for Brian growing up, he was just lucky enough to have his teeth grow in straight. Her addiction would certainly explain her actions. Brian had done similar things in his time under the influence of the bottle. He hadn’t really been thinking about her motives before, but now, seeing the pain that this woman was in, the desperation in her eyes, he felt a pang in his heart. He needed to help her. “Aw, Brian, you’re so sweet.”“He certainly has a caring soul.”“Bullshit. He’s a killer!” Dennis snapped. The image of that woman’s head splitting open like a watermelon flashed through Brian’s brain, but he quickly shook it off. He could beat himself up about his past later. Now, he had a job to do. He tried to take another step when a shooting pain went up his leg. ”Agh!” He grunted. He could barely move his injured leg. That explosion must’ve torn through his muscles. He supposed that was the problem with expanding your muscles, it made you a bigger target. If that woman were to point a finger at him again, he’d be done for. Luckily, Athena and Cesar came to the rescue, attacking the woman from either side. Brian was impressed at their coordination. Most humans couldn’t work that well together. He cringed, however, as the woman created two explosions directed at the canines. Athena avoided it, but Cesar, miraculously, shook it off, slowing down for only a moment before charging right through it. He had a bit of hope for a second before the woman created a hole in the floor where Athena was about to step and the two dogs? crashed right into each other. The woman made a break for it. She was fast, much faster than Brian would’ve anticipated for someone in her state. It must’ve been the adrenaline, Brian decided. In his time as a vigilante, he’d learned that adrenaline could be a powerful force of nature, more powerful than actual superpowers in some instances. Brain turned his head toward Isaiah as he spoke. He was impressed by Isaiah’s calmness. This must not be his first time doing something like this. Maybe he was a Hero? ”Heroes do not wear ski masks.””True.” Brian muttered. He must've been a vigilante, like himself. A part of him just wanted to let the woman get away, but he knew he couldn't help her if he just let her go. There was no way she could function on her own and she'd probably try something like this again. He looked down at his leg, an idea forming in his mind. He expanded the muscles in his uninjured leg until it was three times its size, putting all his weight on it, alleviating any pressure on the leg with a massive hole in it (well, massive might’ve been hyperbole, but that’s what it felt like). He could hobble around now, and even lunge if he needed to, but there was no way he could run. ”Could I um, ride on one of your...dogs?” He asked, not sure if they qualified as dogs anymore. ”I promise I can still help, I just can’t go very fast at the moment.”Isaiah Moore
