Side Effects May Vary “I mean I’m not saying that I should use my powers for evil but I bet robbing a bank would be ten times easier now,” Mason was saying, in between shovelling over-sized mouthfuls of pancake down his throat. He was doing a stand-up job of keeping the positivity going and was currently in the middle of a rant about how he could take advantage of his invisibility. Alice was very engaged with the conversation, unsurprisingly. Claire was less so – something was worrying her.
He hoped she wasn’t worrying about him. She was entitled to, of course, but she had her own new abilities to think about… plus whatever that phone call had been about. Mason wasn’t sure when he’d get the opportunity to check up on her about it now, but that could roll around in time. Maybe it’d be easier to discuss as a distant past event. Alternatively, he could be reading too much into things. It was hard to tell with Claire.
“People rob banks without invisibility so it’s definitely achievable, but I think they use guns and I don’t have any of those,” he pondered. He wasn’t remotely entertaining the idea of staging a hold-up but it was fun to pretend, even if just for Alice’s reactions.
Claire’s face was still pretty serious as they finished breakfast and started on washing duties. It was weird assisting Alice with the task when she had very few clues as to where his hands were but fortunately he didn’t break any of Claire’s dishes, although there were definitely some close calls. Claire was busying herself in the living area – tidying – and Mason kept an eye out as he dried plates just in case she showed signs of what was going on in her busy mind.
Then she was flying through the air to the soundtrack of Dom’s loud, genial announcement.
Okay, it was more of a gentle stumble into a load of cushions, but Mason rushed out to check she was okay anyway. It seemed like there was nothing bruised, except perhaps her ego, so he turned to Dom and extended his hand jovially.
“A shocking entrance, man,” he grinned.
Mason swiftly remembered that he was invisible and dropped the hand, feeling only a little upset about the missed handshake. Dom could have accidentally lit him up like a Christmas tree anyway, so it was probably for the best. Plus, he couldn’t feel too upset – he was still feeling pretty smug about that pun.

Slumber Party With a deep breath that wouldn’t have been out of place at a yoga class, Mason accepted that neither the mirror nor his companions were able to see what was quite literally in front of them. It was strange because he could definitely see himself – there wasn’t even a slight visual hint that something was amiss. Maybe he felt a little different… or maybe he was expecting to.
It was a little odd being grabbed at, even if they both had the grace to hesitate before doing so. He got it, sure, they were curious, but a brief check with him first would have been nice.
“Yeah, yeah it’s cool… Weird, too,” Mason agreed as Alice pressed her fingers to his chest. He’d played Halo with friends before but had never owned a console himself, so only vaguely knew what she was talking about. It was reassuring that her hand hadn’t passed straight through him, at least. Mason had no plans on being a ghost, thank you very much.
Claire’s hand was only briefly at his neck before she drew it back. It must be a shock to touch something – particularly someone – that was suddenly, inexplicably invisible. Had he not looked in the mirror himself, Mason would still think they were pulling some kinda prank. A very well executed one, mind. They still weren’t meeting his eyes properly, which was starting to get disconcerting.
Lack of eye contact aside, Mason was actually quite pleased with this turn of events. It seemed the doctor’s magic had affected him after all, and here he was – invisible!
“Dom said he’d be getting here for about 9am, I think. I guess the others will be here then too,” he said. “Dunno if they’re expecting breakfast but we know Al’s a champ at that sorta thing now.” Mason grinned at Alice, smile faltering once he recognised the useless gesture. He hoped she got the vibe, in any case. He wasn’t sure how these things worked.
He felt around in his mind for some kind of new trigger to pull, making the same kind of futile effort that kids make when they try to emulate Jedi telekinesis. Nothing.
“Doesn’t seem to be an off-switch, C,” he said eventually, shrugging. “But hey, maybe I’ll figure one out. Not a priority right now though…” Mason felt his stomach rumble again. “Got any more delicious recipes for us, Al?”
Working out how this new ability worked was definitely on his agenda, but Mason had never been a man who could work on an empty stomach. Dom could burst through the door right now and tell them that their powers were a biological response to an imminent alien invasion and Mason would calmly sit himself down and repeat his request for pancakes.
Extraterrestrial tribulations be damned.

Slumber Party “…What do you mean, ‘it wasn’t me’?”
From the way neither of them were meeting his gaze, Mason could already tell exactly what Alice had meant by that statement. What the hell was wrong with him? Had he grown wings? Horns? He looked down, examining himself. He was still in the same clothes he’d been wearing yesterday – too shy to strip down further – and it didn’t look like he’d turned into a slime monster overnight.
“Pranks?”
He was still entirely lost, and beginning to feel like this was some practical joke the two young girls had concocted while he was sleeping. Alice was certainly childish enough to have suggested such a thing and maybe Claire could have been persuaded to go along with it if Alice had been insistent enough. Maybe they’d drawn on his face.
The horror!
Mason cast each of them a quizzical look but the two continued to stare straight past him. It was getting a little rude, to be honest, but maybe they were just building to a particularly odd, amusing punchline. He waited a couple more seconds but Claire failed to provide any more instructions beyond a direction towards the bathroom, so he sighed deeply and did as he was told.
His heart raced a little in anticipation – maybe he had grown some cool new feature! Sure, it wouldn’t be fork-proof skin, but a tail or a third eye or something would be a talking point at least.
He checked over his shoulder to see if the others were following before pushing open the door and marching straight up to the mirror.
“Okay, let’s see what mischief you’ve-”
Was the mirror broken?
Wait, that didn’t make sense. Mirrors didn’t stop working like that.
What the…?
He spun around. “Can either of you guys see me?” He waved wildly and jumped up and down for effect.
Either Mason was finally losing the plot and succumbing to hallucinations, or he’d somehow turned invisible in his sleep.

Slumber Party Mason was having very strange dreams. A whole bunch of them, each more abstract than the last. Honestly, by the fourth, Mason had reached a point of semi-lucidity and was questioning whether or not this slumber would be even remotely refreshing. The first dream was a fairly normal one – the office had been painted different colours and he’d been given the brand spanking new position of “Balloon Collector” – but as the minutes ticked by his dreams were beginning to lack any kind of coherent theme. His first thought as he started coming to was that wow, something must really be bothering him.
One loud snort had jerked him awake… must have been snoring again. Oops – sorry Claire. He stretched, blinking at the light creeping in through his eyelids before opening them slowly.
“There’s no one there.” That was Alice speaking, although he’d missed the beginning of the conversation. Mason sat up in a noisy rustle of blankets to grin good-naturedly at his fellow slumber party guests.
“Morning ladies!” Alice was looking at him a little funny – almost through him rather than meeting gaze – but Mason brushed it off as a side effect of still waking up. “No more magic powers developed overnight, then?”
He was excited to see Dominic. He wondered if any of the others would be coming over to share any more fantastic talents. It was definitely something that, having slept on it, Mason was more excited about that anything else. Hopefully Claire was feeling better now too, he’d have to make sure that things were all okay after the stress of her “fork-proof” skin discovery and that late night phone call.
Mason’s stomach rumbled. “Pancakes?

Post by Mason Warner on Nov 13, 2016 22:01:09 GMT
Slumber Party Mason was very, very comfortable in his mass of pillows and blankets. It helped that he’d been over-heating somewhat and had to migrated to the very top of the pile, allowing for a particularly snuggly base. It was probably best that he had the floor as opposed to Alice as the couch wasn’t exactly the roomiest for a man of his size. This way Mason could stretch out, arms wide. When they initially headed to their respective sleeping spots, Mason was unsure about how quickly he’d get to sleep. However, once he’d achieved this optimum sleeping position above the blankets, he was out like a light. The only reason he was awake now was because his bladder had decided that it was time to go and that it couldn’t wait until the morning. It was most inconvenient, but probably the result of one Blue Moon too many for it to handle. He had only himself to blame. Blearily, Mason coaxed himself from the soft, warm pile and blindly guided himself towards the bedroom door, pulling it open as quietly as possible. The bathroom door pushed open and Mason promptly had a small heart attack. “Claire!” He barely managed to suppress his exclamation, worried about disturbing Alice’s slumber even in his sleep-dazed state. He took a double-take, frowning at the look on her dimly lit face. “You okay, C?”She jumped when he bumped into her, practically flattening against the wall before putting a careful finger over her lips with a glance to the living room and couch. “Yeah… phone call,” she whispered. “What are you doing up?”The hoarse whisper that Mason chose to effect was bizarrely theatrical, and he moved closer to try and reign it in. “I uh- sorry, I’m bad at whispering, I just needed to use the bathroom. Hope the phone call wasn’t anything too serious.” He frowned, unsure of whether she needed comforting or to be left alone. Yes, yes he was bad at whispering. She gave a tired smirk and dipped her eyes down. “It’s okay. Was um… My dad. I’ll get out of your way here,” she scooted back from the bathroom door to give him space and left the bedroom door open for him on the way back - sitting on her bed with a tiny sketchpad and small book light to let her see. Mason hovered in the doorway, frown still etched into his forehead. “Well… is your…” He watched as she sat herself down on the bed and pulled out the small sketchpad. Huh, he knew she was studying art, but it was interesting to see her actually doing it. Mason wasn’t really the creative sort. “...Is your dad okay? Sorry, I’ll leave you to it, but just know that if you need to talk about it when I’m more awake then that’s, you know, totally cool.” He smiled warmly, trying his best not to intrude any further than he already had. She looked up at him in the doorway from her pad when he returned to the room. “Yeah, yeah…” Her second was a bit quieter than the first, trying to reassure him. Or herself… It was hard to discern. “It uh… It was my parents’ anniversary today or-,” what time was it? “Yesterday, I guess now. I was on the way to the airport… He’s been worried. Will this keep you up? Does it bug you?” she lifted the book light slightly. “I hope they did something special to celebrate!” He hushed himself, cheeks reddening. Hopefully Alice was a heavy sleeper… “And no, don’t you worry about me, I’m a state champ at sleeping on a busy mind. You don’t have to say any more, it’s okay.”It wasn’t the time or place to make him feel awkward. Most times when people commented and didn’t know, she just let it happen. Another tired smirk lifted on her features. “Cool… Night, Mason. And thanks,” she offered and continued to sketch away. Mason nodded silently, finally mastering the art of keeping quiet for that one moment, and left her to it. She didn’t have to thank him, he didn’t feel like he’d even helped… at all. But maybe he just had to get to know her more before he could sense such sensitive changes in her mood. The quiet ones were always the hardest to read. In any case, Mason could recognise a fellow enthusiast of hiding behind smiles. One empty bladder and several giant yawns later, Mason collapsed back onto his pile of blankets, drifting immediately into a deep, weary sleep. Somewhere upwards of 6am Claire finally nodded off on the pad with the pencil still in her hand.

Slumber Party Mason’s mind was reeling. In one short phone-call, the childish hopes he’d so carefully tidied away were running out to play once more. Dom had freaking lightning? Or, okay, absorbing electricity or whatever… Mason was quite jealous. He figured that as a former electrician, he should have first dibs on the electricity powers. He indulged himself by imagining a heroic future Mason with similar powers, maybe fire – something big and impressive. It was quite exciting now that the possibility seemed just a little more real.
He joined the others in silent contemplation once the phone went silent, but was glad for Alice breaking the silence even if it wasn’t to brainstorm potential magical abilities.
“What now?” Mason echoed, leaning back lazily on the sofa and grabbing his beer. “Not much we can do now, Al. We’ll wait for Dom to show up in the morning, see if he’s got any wise ideas or information for us. For now, that means we can relax, watch some more TV – sorry, Netflix – and uh… yeah…” He drummed his fingers against the cushions, feeling a little awkward. If Alice had been looking for a more proactive answer from him, she wasn’t getting one. Mason hadn’t the faintest clue what was going on, but was quite content to wait and find out.
“Isn’t that good news, C…?”
C-Laire hadn’t gotten the best reception. Mason was going to have to just keep experimenting until something stuck.
He laughed at himself and continued. “It must be from the doctor if Dom has suddenly got powers too, which somewhat solves the mystery. And hey, at least with your ability you won’t be sizzling all your favourite electronics. You might wanna steer clear of getting any flu jabs though…
“Where are we gonna sleep? I’m happy crashing on this couch but the floor is cool too if we’re short on space. Don’t want either of you two ladies missing out your beauty sleep on my account!”

Slumber Party Mason was amused by the fact that Alice had also been harbouring hopes of donning tights and fighting crime. He figured they’d be having a whole separate issue if she’d been the one to develop superhuman levels of toughness – they’d probably be holding her back from rushing out and tackling the first petty thief or drunken wannabe-combatant she came across. Mason liked to think that his reaction would have been a happy medium.
He smiled at Claire, pleased to see her having reached a point where she no longer needed to cling to him. It had been nice to be a source of comfort but it was even nicer to see her beginning to calm. Nothing close to the calm nature she seemed to usually exhibit, but much less hysterical now. On her way back to whatever normality was left available to her.
“You never know, Dom might have the same thing. He’s quite the showman, surely superpowers would come naturally to him if they could,” Mason grinned, only half kidding. “We all seem to have experienced a boost in our health. I’m afraid that one’s not exclusive to you, kiddo.”
He stood immediately at the mention of pancakes, taking Alice’s words as an open invitation to dig in.
The first mouthful was heavenly. They were inexplicably light for something entirely laced with syrup and Mason savoured the pancakes for approximately two seconds before his viciously ravenous appetite kicked in. He blinked and the pancake before him seemed to have been eaten. He cast suspicious glances at each of his companions before letting out a quiet burp.
Oh. It appeared that the culprit was in fact himself.
“You could say they’re okay,” he teased, rubbing his stomach contentedly. “Whaddya say, C-Laire?”

Slumber Party It had been a huge internal fight to even raise the fork into position. Claire seemed desperate for him to do it, if just to prove what had just happened before their very eyes wrong. If only she could calm down, take a breath and appreciate that this was not some terrible symptom. He wasn’t expecting the same level of excitement that Alice was exhibiting – as adorable as her child-like enthusiasm was – but a little shaky acceptance that this was a part of her now would be nice.
The fork collapsed in his hands and this time he watched it happen.
It was almost unbelievable, but after everything that had happened over the last few days Mason was feeling a little more open-minded. Even Alice’s wild super soldier theory was vaguely convincing.
“I can’t say I’ve tested it…” he said hesitantly, surveying the twisted metal in his hands. His heart raced a little at the idea of having developed superpowers.
“Why would a rogue doctor use test some military junk on us and then just let us leave without, I dunno, testing us or something?”
Maybe he should just try it.
Mason the Metal Man… How cool would that be?
He plucked another key from the coffee table and exchanged looks with Claire and Alice. He wasn’t entirely sure which outcome he was actually hoping for here. Maybe there were horrible side effects associated with the treatment that hadn’t kicked in yet (he decided not to voice this theory, for Claire’s sake). Or maybe this was his destiny, and Mason was going to be the bulletproof super soldier of every young boy’s dreams.
Tracing the pointed edges of the key against his skin didn’t do much.
He prodded a bit. Gently. His skin didn’t break, but neither did the key. Slowly, Mason committed himself to begin scraping the key along… and instantly retracted the key in pain. There was a small but clearly visible line etched into the surface of his skin, instantly bursting his faintly developed dreams of heroism.
“Well, it didn’t work on me,” he said softly. “Whatever magic that doctor worked on me, it didn’t give me super strength. But Alice is onto something, that doctor definitely could have had a hand in this somehow. If only we knew who she was...”

Slumber Party Mason felt disheartened as Claire’s wide, panicked eyes fixed on his and she asked her shaky, heart-breaking question. He could fake positivity for his own benefit – he’d been doing it on and off his whole life – but apparently he was unable to drag Claire along for the ride. He could understand her confusion and subsequent terror. This was like something out of a movie that Mason would usually really enjoy.
In a way, he was enjoying this moment, deep down past his own shock and concern for Claire. He wondered if this was what it was like to witness a miracle. For all that it was scary and irregular, it was also kinda… magical.
“Not wrong, Claire,” he began, his voice as soothing as he could possibly manage. “We’ll figure this out, I-”
Then Alice burst in, and Claire’s hopes of keeping all this from Alice were shattered. Mason still had the key held aloft, clutched between finger and thumb, and Alice took it from him before he could even begin to protest. Not that he really wanted to. Her ensuing enthusiasm confirmed his optimism regarding her reaction, if only briefly.
Claire’s face was still frozen in a mask of horror and Alice wasn’t stupid. She picked up instantly that this was far, far more than a (pretty impressive) party trick.
“There’s nothing wrong...” Mason reiterated, casting a look at Claire. “We’ve just made a little discovery. It’s easier if Claire just, uh, demonstrates. If that’s okay.” He paused.
“Claire?”
It was up to her. She could back out, call it a fluke. Alice would be disappointed, maybe even upset, but she’d probably see that Claire was keeping something private for a reason. On the other hand, she could embrace this, take the first step towards accepting it, and they’d probably be that much closer to understanding just what the hell was actually going on.
He cast a wistful glance at the pancakes. Claire was the priority right now, of course, but damn, they looked good.

Slumber Party It took a lot of self-control not to wince as Claire caught his hand in a vice-like grip. At least he knew now that she was okay with physical acts of comfort. Mason was wary of assuming other people’s boundaries of personal space and was particularly aware that he was little more than a stranger to this girl but, if anything, she seemed to need him right now. And that was okay, he decided. He was happy to help.
For the first time in a long while, he found himself remembering Jane. It didn’t hurt to think of her now – not after all these years – but it was funny how the little reminders endured. Jane had hated being touched in comfort; she was all about talking through her problems logically which Mason had never quite gotten the hang of. Sure, Mason was eager to find solutions to problems, but he was never so detached from his emotions in the process. To him, a small gesture of comfort went a long way towards easing an anxious mind and helping to reach the next step.
Thankfully, Claire was on the same page as he was with the key. He selected one which looked the least worn and rested the edge of it against her forearm.
“You gotta tell me if it hurts,” he insisted in a low voice. He gave her hand a quick, reassuring squeeze. Mason wasn’t entirely sure whether the reassurance was for Claire’s or his own benefit. Sensing her nerves as well as his, it was likely a bit of both.
He pressed the key against her skin firmly and slowly dragged it a couple of inches down her forearm. It was meeting a lot of resistance, not even making a mark, but at her encouragement Mason knew he could try harder.
“Sorry, Claire.”
Mason drew his hand back a little, adjusted his grip on the key, and drove it down hard. Instinctively, he felt his eyelids snap shut. The second’s pause before he convinced himself to re-open them felt like an eternity, his heart pounding in his heavy chest, waiting for Claire to shout, scream... anything.
His eyes opened.
The key had bent completely, turning back almost entirely on itself. In all likelihood, the metal had probably been very close to snapping. A quick look suggested that it was a high-quality, nickel silver key, and yet it had just bent against Claire’s skin like it was nothing more than a thin sheet of foil. With a tense bite of the lip, Mason worked up the courage to check that he hadn’t caused Claire any damage, and then sighed with relief.
Of course, Claire was probably not quite so relieved. It was now definitely not a case of faulty needles.
“That’s amazing,” he breathed, examining the key in awe. “I gave that everything I had and you just toughed it all out.” His eyes flickered to her face, searching for any indication that she could see the positive side of this strange, strange situation.
“I think… if you want… Alice would wanna see this.”

Get the Gang Together! The option of wearing something from lost and found was pretty unappealing – no matter how thoroughly he was sure the items of clothing had been washed and sanitised beforehand. He frowned to himself, trying to think of anyone who could help him out. The spare keys to his apartment were with Georgia, his neighbour. She could probably bring something for him to wear upon discharge – not that such an event seemed exactly imminent. “Michelle Franklin…” he echoed. The name meant nothing to him. It was such an ordinary name that it seemed incongruous with the situation, but that was all. “That would be great to see her, thanks.” He gave the doctor a thankful smile as he departed. The seemingly youngest of the three girls had moved to perch delicately on one of the beds. He looked up at Dom, who seemed to share Mason’s concern for the girl. He gave the black-haired girl a reassuring pat as he moved away from her side to sit himself down on the same bed. “It’ll be okay, kid,” Mason said softly. He gave her a tentative grin, trying to coax some of her earlier brightness back into her face. “We’ll stick together til this is all sorted out. What’s your name?”

Get the Gang Together! Mason felt a great pang of sympathy for the doctor before them. He didn’t seem to be involved in any kind of conspiracy – he looked just as lost as they were. In a way, Mason could understand the turmoil. He was a practical man himself. Things worked a certain way and once you understood them, you could fix them when they broke. He’d never been particularly studious but he could imagine that a man of science would have a great, intrinsic knowledge about his particular speciality. Doctors faced medical marvels from time to time, watching patients battling the odds, but they also faced death and decline. To have six people standing before you when they, according to your own understanding, shouldn’t even be alive must be an even deeper shock than one might first expect. Mason allowed the memory of the crash to wash over him again, grateful to have kept his hand on the girl’s shoulder to keep him tethered to the present. He had no memory of any ambulances or hospital curtains drawn shut, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there. He shook his head subtly as he turned his attention back to the room. “I wanna thank her too,” he agreed. “I also… want to put on some pants.”

Get the Gang Together! Mason watched the other survivors with fascination. They were a varied bunch and he doubted they had anything particularly significant in common. How on earth were the dots connected? Why had they all managed to survive an event that tore him apart just thinking of it? The two guys seemed decent – both impressive in their own ways but not in a isolating manner. The women were all quite young, especially the blue-haired one, and he couldn’t help but feel protective of each of them. He placed a comforting hand on the nearest girl’s shoulder, giving her a gentle shake. She looked a little off – but maybe she just looked pale in contrast to her dark hair.

The Mystery Begins Mason winced at the mention of the accident. His horror was slightly softened by the overwhelming charisma of the young man before him; the self-assurance flowed off him in waves. Mason recognised the aura of a successful businessman when he saw one and was particularly impressed by this man. The other guy impressed Mason too, though more subtly. It made him smile that his primary concern seemed to be that of a loved one. Compassion was a highly valued trait to Mason. “Oh man, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mason confessed, his voice low. “Must have been one hell of a wreck.” It was incredibly confusing that such little time had passed. From the horrific memory that seemed to simmer permanently in his mind for the time being, Mason would have assumed that he’d be dead, quite frankly. He was no doctor but he was fairly sure that the shattered bones he’d seen were his own, and he was fairly sure that shattered bones did not heal in two days. “I feel incredible, honestly.” He grinned and spread his arms. “I got nothing on me. You okay, big man?” he asked, gesturing towards the other guy who was squinting in their general direction.

Slumber Party Bob’s Burgers started up again, the colourful gentle humour seeming ill-fitting to the room compared to the fear in Claire’s eyes. It had been a good idea to send Alice off into the kitchen – there wasn’t much she could do to help in this situation and he hoped she wasn’t worrying too much. Her offer of pancakes was delivered happily enough, if a little poorly timed. He made a point of looking away from the hidden needles tucked into Claire’s pocket. “Pancakes are great!” Mason called cheerfully. “Got any blueberries in there? Syrup? Bacon?” Wow, he hadn’t realised just how hungry he was. Mason took another long swig of his beer and turned back to Claire, smile fading from his face. There wasn’t something wrong with the needles. Claire would have reacted far more coolly if there was. He leant forward to rest his hand on her knee reassuringly, then drew back a little to check that was okay. He didn’t want to go freaking her out even further. So if the needles weren’t the problem, Claire was. Not that he’d say that aloud, of course. What could it be? Had she turned into some kinda iron woman? He checked that Alice was still occupied - on the phone, in fact - and then reached for the keys on the table, offering them to Claire and mimicking a prodding motion. He hoped she didn’t think he was nuts. He didn’t want to go wild and grab a knife or something, but he wanted to solve this problem for the poor girl and a key would at least leave a tiny, painless scratch on a person who wasn’t made of steel. Man, this was starting to feel like a wild, week-long dream.
