Are We There Yet? “Miss Mason has a ring to it…” he mused, a chuckle ruining the suggestion that he was seriously considering it.
This was a very different Claire than usual. She seemed a lot more confident and a lot happier now that she wasn’t in the context of powers and mysteries and a big old group of strangers with powers and mysteries of their own. He supposed this was a glimpse of the real Claire, the one he’d gotten flashes of previously but never really managed to get to stick around for long. It was nice to see her open up more. Clearly she had a much sassier, almost devilish side to her.
“Yeah, yeah,” he sighed, raising his hands. “I may be going through a bit of a British TV phase right now, someone at the bar brought in a load of old boxsets. And, oi!” Mason slipped into an abomination of an attempt at a Cockney accent. “Wot’s wrong wiv a bit of pretzel fulfilment?”
His stomach rumbled softly in agreement.
Thankfully the gas station was well-stocked in snacks and Mason actually had to hold back from just telling Claire to clear out the entire aisle. They’d settled on a variety of fizzy drinks, some beef jerky and – most importantly – Mason’s beloved pretzels.
Their clumsy attempt to high-five could have been awkward if Claire had been someone else, but instead she let out a victorious "Yeah!" as their palms finally smacked together with a rather satisfying clap before bursting into laughter. She looked so sweet when she let her seriousness melt away, and the infectious laugh had Mason giggling too.
Weird?! How rude. “Takes one to know one, Mona Claire-sa.”
Okay, that one wasn’t a real attempt. And honestly, it was only proving her point. It even sounded slightly Jar Jar Binks which was really not the impression Mason usually liked to make.
For someone who had only recently been in a devastating car crash, Claire was remarkably calm about the whole idea of the trip. Clearly she wasn’t going to let one incident turn into a fear of driving, no matter how big the incident. It was actually really brave. Mason hadn’t even thought about it until the signs for the bigger roads began showing up and he was hit with the briefest of flashbacks. Go Claire.
“Bicycle race!” he said happily. “I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE, I WANT TO RIDE MY BIIIKE!”
He was ever so slightly delightfully off-key. Mason turned to Claire with an expectant expression. Surely she couldn’t resist singing along.

Recruitment Drive Although it didn’t look like Alice’s hands were about to fall off or anything, Mason felt obligated to at least try to help out. He certainly didn’t want the redness to turn into blisters. Also, Claire seemed super concerned; maybe taking some precautions would put her at ease.
“You should run those under some cold water for a while,” he suggested. “That bar certainly seemed, uh, enthusiastic!”
They had running water in this building, right?
Mason had to admit that he was surprised Alice had been affected at all – apparently she could withstand baseball bats and tumbles down entire flights of stairs but not friction? It could have been that she wasn’t expecting it and that her power was somehow not ready to absorb that sudden energy… Ugh, no, Mason still didn’t really get it. He was sure she’d figure it out herself eventually.
He blinked at Persephone’s directness. She was just outright demanding a demonstration of Claire’s powers? Had she not noticed the way Claire felt about, well, all of this? Her attitude had certainly gotten more positive but that didn’t mean she was ready to jump up and demonstrate. She could surprise him and boldly show Persephone what she could do, he supposed, or maybe she could get away with a simple explanation of her power. Mason was always happy to be pleasantly surprised, however.
It was almost funny to see the way Alice held herself back from taking over the description of Claire’s power. They’d definitely established some kind of concept of ownership over their powers. There was still something a little demoralising about having a personal connection to being unseen, but the connection was still there. He wouldn’t expect anyone else to try and understand his experience to explain to others. It was unique, a part of him, like a weird, unexpected new limb. That didn’t function as a limb. Obviously.
“If Claire joined in with our team idea, she’d be awesome, her power really is pretty cool,” he contributed, trying his best not to make the decision for her. “Almost as cool as her drawings,” he added with a wink. “Almost.”

Recruitment Drive Mason’s grin was astronomical as he spotted Claire. Her greeting was casual as ever but he was sure that some enthusiasm for the whole idea was beginning to creep up on her. The fact that she noted their early arrival meant that she had intentionally arrived early herself. It wasn’t quite the jumping, dancing and spinning that Alice and Mason liked to indulge in but she definitely seemed to have warmed up considerably to spending time in the warehouse.
“Don’t sound too excited,” Mason teased as Persephone somewhat reluctantly admitted to being "roped in too". “Whatcha drawing, Picasso?”
His latest attempts at nickname had been famous artists. Unfortunately, Mason was quickly running out of names… Did Banksy count? Ronaldo? No, wait- he was a footballer.
It was actually quite interesting taking in Persephone’s reaction. She hadn’t given much away and so he wasn’t really sure how happy she’d be to join the makeshift supergroup but she actually seemed quite intrigued. Then she even said it sounded fun! The reaction was a bit of a surprise, but at least it was a pleasant one.
Alice practically leapt at the chance to show off her powers to Persephone. It was, after all, a pretty amazing power to demonstrate and still something that Mason hadn’t quite wrapped his head around. Alice seemed happy with it though, and she was certainly happy in getting to grips with it herself, so that’s all that mattered. He wished he could be at that level too – desire to understand it driven purely by excitement rather than desperation. He wouldn’t have swapped powers with her for the world though – she clearly loved her current set.
A menacing-looking metal leg was torn from one of the piles they should have cleaned up from last time they experimented in here. “Here,” he said, taking the bar from her as softly as possible. He didn’t want to snatch it and catch her by surprise in case her power didn’t have time to respond. Swinging it wildly at her once she knew it was coming? He’d done that enough times by now to be perfectly content with that routine. Still, he kept the jagged end away from Alice. Just in case.
“Ready, Persephone?”
He said it more for Alice than he did her, making sure Alice was really, really ready, and then hauled it round to smack straight into the side of her shoulder. He grunted – it was kinda heavy. Then, heaving it back, he struck her a second and a third time. Gotta give Persephone a proper show, right? With each blow he marvelled at the way it just… stopped, and at the way that Alice barely even blinked. It was awesome.
Then Alice took the weapon back in her hands and spun around to face the far wall. He was about to ask what she was doing, and then it happened.
He winced as the wall took the force of the projectile, making a mental note to check whether the structure was still safe, but was unable to really focus on health and safety when he’d just witnessed Alice launch a freaking rocket from nothing.
“WOAAHH that’s new, okay, okay. Wait,” he frowned. “Are you hurt? What happened?”
He’d gotten so used to her invincibility that he was even more concerned than usual about the injuries. She didn’t seem too worried herself though. Eventually he let himself relax.
“So cool, Paladin,” he said proudly, deciding the moment was a little too cool to deserve a Prom Queen reference. There were plenty of opportunities for PQ, he’d let her have Paladin for this one.

Recruitment Drive It wasn’t the boundless enthusiasm typical of her temperament, but Alice did do a great job of walking into the store and at least attempting to look around at the plants. Mason didn’t have to even try. He just hovered close behind her, careful not to be an obstacle in the fairly small space, and stared blankly in the distance. His dad had been more outdoorsy but even then he’d been more of a fishing man. His mother liked fishing too, but killed every plant she touched, and Annie was no gardener herself. Having lived in city apartments for the majority of his adult life, Mason hadn’t really had the opportunity to expand his knowledge of plants.
In all honesty, he wasn’t planning on it. The closest he got to gardening was buying a bunch of wilting flowers from a gas station, and he hadn’t had reason to do that in years.
“We’re bringing comic books to life!” Mason contributed with hushed excitement.
Slipping out the store behind Alice had a brief moment of danger. Luckily he managed to stabilise the leaning tower of clay pots before a catastrophe occurred. Maybe they would have fallen, maybe they wouldn’t have – Mason just hadn’t trusted that tiny wobble as he brushed past.
Persephone glanced back and Alice looked around for him too as they walked, which was nice. He liked that they still thought of him even when his presence wasn’t exactly obvious. It was actually quite pleasant strolling down the streets and Mason could almost kid himself that this was just an ordinary outing with friends. Which, unless you counted putting together an actual team of actual superheroes as ordinary, was not really the case here.
As they drew closer, Alice joyfully suggested that Claire could be there, which was something he hadn’t considered. She would be sat leaning against the wall with sketchbook in hand, no doubt. As much as he’d love for her to embrace her powers, he also trusted that she was doing so in her own way at her own pace. Plus her art was super pretty and he liked helping out by “levitating” random objects in interesting parts of the warehouse.
He moved ahead of Alice and Persephone to open the door for them. “Helloooo,” he called, turning to peek his head around the frame. “Anybody home?”

Are We There Yet? It had been a surprise when Claire first snatched her bag away but that soon faded as a deep, flushing embarrassment took its place. “Oh right, invisible, yeah…” It had just been Mason’s first instinct to do the heavy lifting – he hadn’t meant to be dumb. Fortunately the slight-framed girl seemed more than capable of handling her own suitcase and so Mason was able to feel a little less guilty about it, focusing more on not getting in her way as she manoeuvred round the car to open the door for him.
“Looks like you’re the gentlemanly one in this scenario,” he teased as he took his seat. “Thank you.”
Mason sat up a little straighter in his seat at the mention of road snacks, his imagination filling with images of brightly coloured wrappers and endless bags of crisps. She was definitely being more thoughtful about this trip than he was. Normally he would just drive until his stomach complained, and then he’d have to drive a little longer until he could find something to satisfy the hunger pangs. Starting the journey with food already in position was such a simple, genius idea that Mason was slightly ashamed that he hadn’t thought of it himself.
“Do you think they’ll have pretzels? I’ll eat anything but I really fancy a pretzel right now…” He sighed longingly.
Mason pulled out the crumpled piece of paper that had his parents’ address on it. At least that was one thing he had come prepared with. Remembering things like addresses and phone numbers was just not a thing that Mason’s memory could handle. It preferred to hold onto things like obscure soccer statistics and quotes from TV shows – clearly a mind honed for conversations in the pub.
“Oh wow, fossils…” he breathed, looking up from the CD collection with an impish grin. “This is the kind of music that Mom and Annie always played when I was growing up. I, uh, can’t not play Queen first. Sorry, that’s just how things work.” He perused the albums before carefully making his choice. “I gotta say, Etch-a-sketch, I’m pleasantly surprised. I thought it might be a load of indie stuff I’ve never heard of. This is pretty cool.”
He couldn’t think of a way to make his seatbelt look natural so decided to just leave it. Cars often had weird quirks – a dodgy seatbelt stuck in position wasn’t going to raise eyebrows, right? Just before settling into his seat, Mason turned to face Claire, extending his palm towards her in an invitation for a high five.
Oh, right.
He cleared his throat. “Woo, road trip! High five!! To your left… Up a bit… Ye- no, YEAH!”

Are We There Yet? It had been a confusing phone call. Mason still wasn’t entirely sure what his parents were expecting from his visit. All he’d managed to say was that he’d been in an accident – he was okay, Mom, calm down – that had changed how he was going to be able to live his life and they, as a crucial part of his life, needed to know about it. Annie had taken over the phone at that point because Mom had worked herself up to the point of exclusively non-verbal responses. Mason insisted that they’d have to see for themselves (the irony was not lost on him) and that he wanted to come visit soon so they could finally understand. There’d been so, so many questions that he just didn’t know how to answer and Annie had eventually reluctantly agreed to hang up on the condition that he drove down ASAP or they would be tracking him down themselves. Mom was in the background, quietly lamenting ever moving away from the Bay Area.
That phone call was how Mason had found himself having to organise a last-minute trip down to Seal Beach. It wasn’t a long drive – maybe six hours – but he was facing the slight issue of not being able to drive his own car for fear of the inevitable widespread panic and confusion over a driverless car speeding down the interstate.
The only people who could help him were the other survivors of the crash. Considering the time frame, Mason was reluctant to push his problems onto any of them… but particularly those who were also in full-time employment. He could clear it with his boss with a simple email – make up some medical excuse if he had to – but not everyone was so flexible. Claire though, she had free time. With her generosity and endless offers of hospitality, the young art student seemed a pretty safe bet. They could make a mini road trip out of it!
Suddenly the journey was exciting rather than daunting and Mason felt himself smiling. He punched in her number. They’d have to stay the night – he just knew his parents would insist – which made things a little difficult but Mason could always take the couch. Maybe they could go to the beach or something too… use the trip as a brief escape from everything that was going on.
He knew she’d like that idea.
“Heyyy Paintbrush, it’s me, Mason. Are you free tomorrow? I could really use your help…”

Recruitment Drive With a sombre nod, Mason echoed Alice’s ‘Dawn of Justice’ criticism with a grunt of disgust. He’d been looking forward to the movie and had left feeling that – at best – he could call it an average movie. As much as he enjoyed action, he also enjoyed movies that had a cohesive plot, developed characters and an engaging screenplay. Thus he totally approved of Alice’s appraisal. It was indeed a stupid movie.
“Dude,” he said, the enthusiasm heavy in his voice. “There could be aliens. Maybe we’re like… descended from aliens, and that’s why we’re… you know…” He hushed his voice even more than before. “Superheroes.”
He smiled at Persephone. “It’s an amazing opportunity. Just think of all the good we can achieve! It’s what our powers were made for.”
Mason was still vaguely clinging to the concept of their powers having a destiny attached to them. It wasn’t something he’d really considered before. Previously, he’d never considered that his purpose in life was to be a manager, but he hadn’t thought it was anything else really either. The magnetic, intoxicating draw of super abilities had ignited something within him and it was a heady, dizzying drive towards heroism. He was sure that Alice in particular felt a similar way. The rest seemed to be still somewhat anchored in normality… for now.
He was happy that Alice accepted his cash without protest. They’d agreed on it beforehand, and she was definitely the type to keep her word, but he was still nervous that she might see it as charity. Alice had certainly consumed her fair share of fries.
Once they paid, Mason waited for the others to leave so that he could slip through the door behind them unnoticed. He was pleased with himself for remembering. Maybe he was getting used to being invisible after all. Maybe he really could continue a somewhat normal life. He’d have to tell his mums, of course, and eventually maybe he could tell work if powers became an accepted thing in society.
Buoyant, Mason walked along beside Persephone and Alice, noticing only too late that collision with a rubbish bin was imminent.
He stopped himself for the most part but the metal can still rattled and groaned a little at the sudden impact. He blushed. “Oops. Sorry guys, I’m… I’m fine. Wasn’t looking.”
Stealth was clearly not quite yet his infallible speciality...

Recruitment Drive Pouting like a child, Mason crossed his arms. He was obviously far more amused than anything else – it was hilarious to be scolded by a blue-haired eighteen-year-old, after all – but he felt it necessary to play along. Saran-Man may have been dead before the name had even begun, but the joke lived on.
He wasn’t sure whether Persephone was just humouring them or not. She said she was interested, and she seemed happy enough to learn more, but it was really hard to tell with that girl just what exactly she was thinking. Certainly she didn’t seem 100% convinced just yet, but they could work on that. Once she witnessed Alice in action, for example, surely then she’d really understand what they were planning.
“I’m happy to walk,” Mason said, glad not to have to deal with any more buses. As fun as it was at times, it was also quite stressful. He assumed that the vagueness of Persephone’s gardening talk was to save them from boredom, but it was still a little odd. Something about the way she phrased it. He hoped the little inspiration that needed supplies was just a nice new flower bed or something. “And sure, we can pretend to admire the plant pots or something.”
He remembered his power. “Or, Al can pretend, and I can do whatever I want.”
He grinned.
“Within reason,” he assured them.
Alice’s undying enthusiasm kept them on track. He was looking forward to helping people – it was something really giving him a lot of hope at the minute. Whether he could think of a good team name was another matter.
“I take it you don’t want any suggestions from me?” he teased. “I’ve not been getting great feedback so far.”
He leaned forward and passed his wallet under the table, dropping it into Alice’s lap. For some reason, he had the joyful impression that it had remained concealed the entire time he’d been holding it. Maybe his power control really was improving.
“It is cool and it so is like a comic book. I’m half-expecting an alien invasion any second.”
That wasn’t even a lie. He was right there with Alice – this was so bizarre, true, but it was also so very cool all at the same time. Hopefully the others, not just Persephone, could see that too.

Stress Fracture For the first time in a few days, a visual flashback of the accident tore its way into Mason’s thoughts. He winced. Alice’s reminder that she’d been brought back from death had clearly triggered something in his mind. He’d been so caught up in the highs and lows of developing powers that he hadn’t really had time to think much about the crash itself. Yup, definitely still a traumatising experience. Thanks for the recap, brain.
“ I’d still keep a bunch of emergency sugar around just in case, until a doctor can confirm it or something,” Mason said hesitantly. He wasn’t really sure how diabetes worked. “But Alice is right, curing diabetes could definitely be in the doctor’s skillset.” That would be nice for Claire – an undeniably positive outcome of June 3rd.
He beamed, pleasantly surprised that Claire hadn’t shot his arty ideas down. “I can hold still! It’s typical though… my modelling career starts the second no one can see my face…”
Mason really wasn’t one to care about his looks. He supposed at least if someone were to become invisible, it was good that it was somebody like him. He could only imagine how terrible it’d be for somebody who lived and breathed on the admiration from others. Plus, he could work from home. A model didn’t really have that option…
Claire was visibly uncomfortable at the idea of joining in with power experimentation. To her credit, she was holding back fairly well from completely rejecting Alice’s invitation. Not well enough, obviously, but Alice probably would have been disappointed however she’d have put it unless the answer had been “Yes”. Alice reeled back, apologising profusely, and Mason watched with sadness as she retreated in on herself.
“It will be nice to show her the batcave,” he said gently, not really sure what else to say.
Fortunately Claire’s offer to draw something for Alice got her smiling again. It would probably take Alice a bit to really recover, but she was unexpectedly tough with this kind of thing. Her relentless attempts at positivity could only be seen as admirable in Mason’s eyes. He knew what it was like to put a happy face on, after all.
“Well you gotta give her something cool to draw now, Al,” Mason chuckled. “She’s already seen a flying bat smack you on the head after all. Shall we?”
He gestured to the door.
…Mason was definitely still in some kind of denial regarding his own transparency.

Recruitment Drive Beaming proudly, Mason nodded in agreement. He could make a speciality in stealth work – surely that was going to come in handy when fighting crime. “Exactly,” he said in a low, amused tone. “Maybe I should bypass all this superhero stuff and become a spy…
“The name’s Man,” he murmured, “Saran-Man!”
The last few fries that Mason consumed were in a comparatively risky manner considering the great care he’d taken with his first few. In all honesty, he’d like to claim that it was because he had mastered his power but in truth it was because he wasn’t really thinking about it. It was only once he’d finished that he noted his blasé fry-eating and then, with a sigh of relief, the lack of horrified onlookers. He’d obviously managed to get away with it but he should have been more cautious. It was hard remembering your invisibility sometimes.
Persephone returned, having finished her shift, and looked a little hesitant as she remained standing next to Alice. Then her expression hardened a little and she was back to her usual self.
Alice did her best to tell Persephone “everything”. There was a lot to cover, after all. It was mildly impressive watching her rattle through her enthusiastic summary of recent events – eventually remembering to breathe – and Mason wondered idly if Persephone would find her eagerness to be off-putting or infectious. Looking at her face, it was really, really hard to tell. Clearly she was still processing it.
“It would just be a group of us six, anonymous,” he added, leaning close so she could hear him. “It seems smart to stick together; doing good and helping others can just be like a happy side effect if you want.”
It wasn’t for him. It was far more meaningful than that, and he knew it was for Alice too. There was something oddly comforting about the thought of being a force for justice. It gave him a sense of purpose that he hadn’t felt for a long time, and he was clinging to it for all it was worth.

Recruitment Drive What a good way to describe it: “drowning in the red sea”. Mason made a mental note to steal it for future objections to the crime of covering fries in ketchup. He had a couple of buddies from the bar who would sometimes order fries for the group and then smother the entire thing. His joy and gratitude became tainted by resentment at being forced to endure soggy fries. The horror!
“’Course I trust you, Chef,” he affirmed. Mason felt pleased that she – a culinary pro – was on his side.
It was strange, but he knew that Alice was just one of those endlessly trustworthy people. She was just so earnest, forever wearing her heart on her sleeve, that there was no way that you couldn’t trust her after spending more than five minutes in her presence. There was also no way that you couldn’t pick up on her sensitive nature. Her concern that Persephone might not want to join their team was very much etched onto her face.
“I won’t lie, I don’t really get her power,” Mason confessed quietly. “But I bet it would come in handy, and I feel like we should all stick together and I’m sure she does too.”
He wasn’t sure about this, not at all, but he felt slightly more optimistic than Alice seemed so it was his job to spread the false positivity.
Persephone dropped off the fries – which smelled surprisingly delicious – with a particularly jarring “miss” thrown in Alice’s direction. He wasn’t sure there was quite the need for such formality. Then she dropped a little of the act again and he felt slightly more at ease. At least she wasn’t just flat-out pretending that she had no idea who they were. That would’ve have been mean.
He decided against thanking Persephone for the fries in case they were overheard. There was no way Alice could pass his voice off as her own – although it would be funny to watch her try.
He turned his attention to the fries. Maybe he was just hungry, or maybe these did actually look as good as they smelled. Only one way to find out how they tasted… Mason reached out and closed his fist around a large fry on the edge of the plate, taking care not to disrupt the pile in the process. Okay, so it was probably invisible now. He lifted it up a little and waved his closed fist around to check Alice’s reaction. No floating fry. Good.
He then manoeuvred the fry into his mouth, keeping it as tightly contained as possible throughout. There were no screams from nearby diners so he assumed that the mission had been a success. Mason chewed happily for a while (it was an okay fry, nothing special) before swallowing and letting out a soft, satisfied burp.
“Fry obtained!” he hissed happily, reaching for another. “And you thought I wasn’t stealthy…”
He continued in this manner for a while, getting bolder with how much coverage he gave the fry but never letting it just sit in his open hand, trying his best to develop a good technique of covertly dipping the fry in ketchup. For all its disadvantages, at least his ability was a fun mental exercise at times. And he’d always been told to pace himself better while eating anyway. At this rate of consumption, Alice actually had a chance of having her own fair share. Which, of course, he insisted upon.

Recruitment Drive “Thief!” Mason hissed through clenched teeth, pointing an accusatory finger. He’d made a perfectly civil offer to share his fries and here Alice was talking about stealing them! Outrageous behaviour!
He waited a couple of seconds for his accusation to really sink in before letting out a gentle snort of laughter. “No seriously, you’re welcome to my fries. Just don’t coat them in ketchup – that’s a deal-breaker.” Mason was a strictly sauce-on-the-side kinda guy. If he wanted his fries to be soggy and drenched in tomato sauce he’d order a bowl of soup and dump them in there.
Persephone had done a quick circle of the diner and was back with coffee, armed with a crisp little notepad juxtaposed by an old, chewed black pencil. It was still odd to witness her in her professional role, regardless of how much it made sense, and Mason was starting to be both seriously impressed and a little nervous of her acting ability. Of all the survivors, it seemed that he knew the least about her. Details of her life had been few and far between – the fact that she’d revealed the name of her workplace was enough of a miracle. Maybe he’d need to get on Google Translate and pull out some Russian to find out if she was a spy. Or maybe he was overreacting and had been living in a complete mental fantasyland since superhero-ing became a tangible reality.
Whatever. She probably wasn’t a Russian spy. …Probably.
Alice verbally tripped and stumbled her way through a response to Persephone’s enquiry. Alice was definitely not a Russian spy. Or she was very good at hiding her spy skillset.
“We can explain properly later,” Mason added quietly. “Just the fries, thanks!”

Recruitment Drive At least Persephone wasn’t putting on such an act that she was prepared to pretend that Mason didn’t exist. She gazed just past his left shoulder as she informed them that she’d be coming back to take their food order which was a pretty good attempt at acknowledging him, to her credit. Then Persephone moved swiftly across the restaurant to continue doing her job and Mason and Alice were left alone momentarily.
For a second, Mason tried to figure out a noiseless protest against Alice’s decision to sit and listen to music while she waited. He was just about to rap his knuckles against the surface of the table when she suddenly explained herself.
“Ohhh…” Mason whispered with relief. “Good idea!”
He followed Alice’s gaze, taking a quick look at the menu. It was your standard greasy spoon fare – not much choice but enough to have a few tempting options for the average consumer.
“What about some fries? I can probably keep those hidden.”
Mason’s stomach rumbled approvingly. “Maybe a large fries. You can share but please let me pay, to thank you for ferrying my invisible ass around everywhere.”
It was something that Alice probably hadn’t even considered to be a kindness. She probably didn’t even realise how much Mason appreciated the time and effort she sacrificed to keep him company while they tracked the other survivors down to join their new team. He could have tried to do it alone, but it was so much easier with somebody else. Much more fun too. It was like they were on an important mission together – saving the world one diner trip at a time!

Recruitment Drive Honestly, Mason was half-convinced that they had the wrong person. An outsider could easily be forgiven for thinking that Alice and Persephone had never met before – there was a geniality there, sure, but it was an impersonal one which cemented their roles as server and client. It was a change from how Persephone had been in the hospital. There she’d been in unfamiliar territory and had seemed uncertain for all her outward confidence. She seemed much more in control here.
It was hardly fair to criticise her for being professional though. He actually admired her tenacious pride in maintaining this image even when the environment didn’t really call for it – it was hardly the picture of fine dining here. Mason always approved of people working hard.
Alice was visibly thrown by Persephone’s act but did well in recovering. Mason had been on the verge of asking for another coffee before remembering his invisibility. He sighed lightly. Maybe he could steal some of Alice’s when nobody was looking.
They sat down at the booth in the front window, which suited Mason perfectly. They were a fair distance from other diners and there was far less chance here than on the bus that somebody was going to want to take Mason’s seat. Alice’s mention of “we” was subtle but hopefully caught, as Mason didn’t fancy being ignored completely for the rest of the afternoon. The weird contortions of her face were apparently supposed to add to this message but in all honesty it just made Mason let out a gentle, audible snigger.
“Stop being funny,” he hissed as Persephone went to fetch the coffee. “You’ll get us in trouble with the plant lady.”
He was still grinning though.

Recruitment Drive Mason’s penny had taken up permanent residence in his pocket. He’d lost track of the time he’d spent in front of the mirror, spinning it through the air and watching with dismay as it appeared to materialise before him each time before disappearing back into his closed fist. It didn’t seem to need full coverage, however, so he hadn’t completely failed to make any progress in understanding his ability. It had taken him a while to notice, but sometimes the coin would disappear even when his hand was closed only loosely around it and, after a little experimentation, he noticed that it should have been possible to peek at. He decided that meant that there was some hope for deliberately extending his power beyond the boundary of his skin after all.
The coin was becoming more of a token than anything else now. It was a symbol of his on-going personal development – that intimidating quest to make himself useful. It was something to focus on that wasn’t hopelessly trying to turn his ability off. By now he was certain that it was a permanent part of him.
Claire had had plenty to experiment with, as had Dom and Alice, so he was excited to see what Persephone had come up with. Surely she couldn’t have resisted the draw of her powers. Maybe they’d walk in to find her chatting with Treebeard. That’d be pretty badass. Mason had to admit that he didn’t really understand what her power was – just that it was some form of super gardening. His mind automatically went to sentient trees.
“Sounds good,” he mumbled quietly, drawing so close that it would have been awkwardly intimate for any onlookers. Honestly, Mason was just trying his best not to be overheard by any of their fellow passengers – his whispering still needed work. “This it?”
The bus had pulled up to a stop and Mason could see a greasy looking diner in the near distance that seemed to match his expectations. It was definitely not somewhere that you’d find in the reviews section of a newspaper; small, characterless and strangely devoid of that “diner charm” that Mason had come to expect from such places. He imagined it probably struggled by on a steady supply of regulars-by-convenience and did little to attract anybody else.
They swiftly disembarked – Mason trying his hardest not to take up any space or collide with passing pedestrians – and made their way to the uninviting diner. It didn’t look particularly unpleasant, he had to admit. It was just that it didn’t look particularly pleasant either.
“I think I see her!” he said excitedly, fortunate that there was currently no one nearby who could have picked up on the sudden bodiless outburst. “Al, wave!”
