He wasn't quite sure what to make of Sunny. She was bubbly, petite, and more than a little cute, all of which he liked. On the other hand, she also seemed... a little airheaded? Like, of course she could fly so it probably didn't matter much... but heels on a hero outfit? Really? He couldn't help but wonder if that was a little impractical, ability to fly or no. “Number? Sure, I'll text it to you.” He pulled out his phone, not entirely oblivious to what she was doing but also telling himself that if she had wanted to contact him she could have looked up his number in the Hero program's private directory. It was one of those situations where he couldn't quite be sure if she was flirting, or if she was naturally just a friendly and outgoing person. Well, obviously she was the latter, the question was if she was especially friendly and outgoing with him. Which was hard to judge. However, her explanation of her choices in stopping the getaway car made him raise an eyebrow. That kind of explanation was foreign to him. It didn't sound completely right, but at the same made sense on a level Stephen rarely spent much time thinking about. Sunny clearly occupied a very different world than he did. “Huh... I never thought about it that way...” Her excitement when he proposed they get coffee pushed the meter all the way from “ambiguous” to “definitely flirty”. Well, that was something he could worry about later. She was cute, but he hadn't seen a ton in her to indicate that she would be a good choice long-term. No doubt she'd want endless selfies and be high-maintenance. And then there would be the gossip columns... Well, he was probably getting ahead of himself with those kind of thoughts. Coffee first, and see what happens. He'd totally sleep with her in a second if she let him, though. “Awesome! There's this place down the street called Cole's that has this great...” his voice trailed off as an idea struck him. He liked it at once. It had the makings of something that would satisfy Sunny's love of social media and amuse him with the romanticism of it as well. He grinned. “Okay, idea: How about we start from on top of this build and slowly float down to the front of Cole's, hand in hand? Then we walk in and order. There's usually a bit of crowd this time of day but it's not so big the line takes forever.” He didn't say what he was sure Sunny would notice- that this would be a perfect opportunity for some pictures that would definitely show up on social media soon. What the heck, he could do with some improvement to his public image, and Sunny was definitely good for that. “What do you think? I'll buy.” Sunny Slater

There was something odd in her manner. The way her voice seemed to freeze for a moment over the word "cute", her floating up to his height, comments about muscles... wait, was she flirting? Was that what this was about? "Your mom, really?" He said, genuinely surprised. He was trying to process what to do with her flirting. And it was obviously flirting, now that he saw it. He was used to getting some attention from women, of course, and he normally enjoyed it, but something about Sunny's manner struck him as off. It was like she was trying too hard, like she was desperate, clingy. He didn't like clingy women. Still, she was attractive in her own right, if a little smaller then what he normally wanted. A grin lapped at the edges of bus features. "Sure, just call me if you ever need anything lifted." That shouldn't be flirty, he thought. He didn't exactly want to shut down her advances but he wasn't sure he wanted to encourage them, either. He didn't know Sunny very well. Was she always flirtatious? She didn't have the reputation of a slut, but- If you don't know her, ask her to coffee or something, a little voice seemed to say. Nothing wrong with that, and you might find you like her. Well... there was probably some sense to that. It was better to know then to wonder, right? And she was cute... "Insta... Wait, Instagram? You did it for Instagram?" He blinked. The sentiment was so far out of left-field for him that it took him a moment to recover. He knew that Sunny carefully cultivated her social media presence, but the idea it might be her primary driver hadn't really occurred to him. "You, uh, are you sure that was a good idea? Containing the area of an encounter is the most important part of limiting civilian casualties-" Wait, that was police nerd talk. Not her style at all. But she'd have heard it in training, right? She had been to training, right? He struggled to find the next set of words and went with the first thing that came to mind. "Hey, you want to get coffee or something? Bernardino's is just down the street..." Sunny Slater

The girl was lively, he had to give her that. Full of smiles and giggles and a manner that might have been exasperating if it hadn't been so endearing. For so small a lady she seemed to have a great deal of energy. Stephen's grin widened as he decided that he liked her. He chuckled at her statement that she tracked her fellow heroes for professional reasons. "Uh-huh. Professional reasons, and not to see how many likes they're getting?" It was a joke, though like most jokes it had an element of truth. He'd seen enough of Gravity Girl's social media to know it was important to her. He winked at her, a show he was joking in his mind. "Trust me, I don't think I'm really competing with you in the online department. You're a social media genius!" He was really smiling now. Her cheer was catching. The compliment was genuine, too- Gravity Girl really did do a great job curating her social media. He snorted at her height comment. Not that it wasn't true; he'd just heard it too many times before for it to be funny. "Well, if you need something off the top shelf, let me know. I can definitely handle that." His smile faltered just a bit when she asked what he was there for. It made him think of the hostage situation, and what he'd been forced to do. But the flinch only lasted a moment. "Not in trouble- just trying to sort out some stuff after a hostage situation went bad." He smiled a wan smile. "But that's something else. How about you? Trouble?" He said it with a grin- he had no idea about what had happened with the bank robbery. Sunny Slater

In the police force, becoming involved in a shooting meant, among other things, mandatory therapy sessions and psychological counseling. It wasn't so different in the Hero corp- once you got past the fact that the shooting had been done with a laser from a fingertip instead of with a gun. All things considered, Stephen didn't regret the decision he'd made during the hostage situation he ans Jossalyn had participated in. By acting as he had he felt- and still felt- that he had saved lives. Far from being ashamed, he felt proud, and the impression he got was that the brass mostly approved as well, though they couldn't exactly say they wanted their heroes going around blasting lethal powers. He was leaving one of the sessions- in civilian dress, and wrapped up in his own thoughts- when something bumped into him. Caught off guard, he glanced down and saw a woman, and his first thought was how short she was. She was a tiny thing, even for someone like Stephen who was used to looking down on people, even with heels boosting her height. He recognized her, of course. "Sorry!" He said, seeing her stumble and recover. He smiled a cocky half-smile. "I didn't see you there." She seemed nervous, which wasn't unusual for the women Stephen met. It came with being tall. "Good to officially meet you," he said when she introduced herself. He held out his hand. "I'm Stephen- Paragon when I'm work." Sunny Slater

When Stephen first heard there was going to be a workplace party, he was excited. Then he heard that there wouldn't be any alcohol served, and decided he might not go. Then he heard there would be pizza and decided he might go anyway, but the alcohol requirement still stung. What were they so worried about? It wasn't loke anybody had been hurt last time. He'd barely been able to aim.
The lounge at HQ wasn't exactly a place Stephen chose to hang out a lot- it was too drab for him- but he rounded the corner to see that Frankie had spruced it up with bright orange banners. He grinned. It might have been cheap, but he appreciated the effort. Alice was unmasked but in costume, apparently just back from work. Stephen gave her a wave. "Hey Alice. Frankie!" Stephen flashed a grin at the redhaired woman. "Looks great!"
In the center of the room stood a tough-looking woman with the lingering smell of smoke around her. Stephen extended his hand. "Hey, I'm Stephen."

[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]APPEARANCE [attr="class","hopelovetop"][attr="class","hopelovesub"]
HAIR // Brown[break] EYES // Blue[break] SKIN // Type II on the Fitzpatrick scale[break][break]
ATTIRE[break][break] Stephen takes a lot of pride in his appearance, and is generally willing to shell out for the latest fashions, even if it would be financially unwise. The fashion subculture he falls into tends to be a mixture of “frat boy” and “hipster”, but he generally has good sense about how to mix the two. He likes dressing up when he can, and it's rare for him to wear a t-shirt except in the grubbiest of circumstances. He prefers dark colors, especially blue and black. [break][break]
GENERAL[break][break] Stephen spends a lot of time on his hair and beard and takes a lot of pride in them. They're always styled, and one of his demands in designing his costume was that it showed them off. Stephen is proud of his physique as well and hits the gym every day if possible. He stands 6'5” and weighs 260 pounds.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]PERSONALITY [attr="class","hopelovetop"]
Stephen has always been a bit of a jock: physical, outgoing, laughing a lot, liking company and having a bit of a wild side. He's always smiling, almost always in a good mood, and always ready for a laugh. He likes being active, solving problems, and just plain doing things. He plays the occasional video game- shooters, mostly- but he'd much rather be out shooting baskets with his friends. He's very confident, always sure of himself, and is prone to taking dares. Although he's had his share of girlfriends, he generally finds women incomprehensible and has never had a very deep emotional relation with any of them. He's pretty close to a few of his guy friends, though, and is surprisingly big on hugs and fistbumps. [break][break] Unfortunately, Stephen also tends to be a little full of himself, tending to drift off if he isn't the centerpiece of a conversation. He's rarely deliberately mean to other people, but he often unconsciously makes people feel unwanted by making himself the center of everything. He's also a little scared to be vulnerable with others, tending to laugh off deep conversations instead of having them. In general, if he's having fun, he assumes that everyone else is, and it's difficult for him to realize that might not be the case.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]HISTORY [attr="class","hopelovetop"]
Stephen was born to upper middle class parents and, for the most part, lived an upper middle class lifestyle. In has case, that meant having a cushy allowance, attending a night private school, getting a cell phone when he was thirteen, getting a car for his sixteenth birthday, and not having to worry about clothes or where the next meal was coming from. In high school, he played football, basketball, and baseball, then played football in college as well, and had dreams of ending up in the pros but turned out to not be good enough. He majored in sports medicine mainly because he wanted to do something with sports and found out the hard way that not every major is equally suited to getting jobs.
After college, he languished for about a year with a job in a coffee shop and one day decided that what his life needed was something radically different. On a whim, he applied to a local police department, and they agree to sponsor him at a police academy. At 23 years old, Stephen was experiencing a career change.
The move was everything he'd hoped for. Stephen found himself to be a skilled police officer and was generally respected by the others in his department. He found the work rewarding and enjoyed it. Still, something seemed to be lacking.
The process of realizing he had powers was a long and slow one, consisting of various unexplained events that left a question mark in his mind. After the Event, he decided to test his suspicions at the local MNRU, and before too long found himself enrolled in the Hero program.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]POWER [attr="class","hopelovetop"][attr="class","hopelovesub"]
ABILITY[break][break] Bioelectric Metabolism and Electromagnetic Transformation [break][break]
Through an unknown biological process, Stephen's body is constantly generating and storing incredible amounts of energy that Stephen can shape, control, and release. The energy permeates his body, energizing him, granting him the kind of endurance normally only seen in super-marathoners and making him not need to sleep. When actively working as a hero, Stephen normally causes his body to glow with a gentle golden light and emit a gentle heat. He can deploy light to brighten a dark area, use blinding flashes of light as distractions, or throw off shockwaves that knock back objects and people. His normal use of the power, however, is to generate lasers of a variety of powers and sizes. He has perfect control over these, can range them from nothing more than a laser pointer to a blast strong enough to melt metal, and can emit them from any part of his body. He has excellent aim with these in what is either a power or a finely tuned human ability.[Break][break]
Through projecting force out from his body, Stephen is able to engage in a crude form of flight (abeit one that is potentially destructive to objects around him). However, through concentration, Stephen is able to actually break his body down into electromagnetic energy, propel himself forward at the speed of light, and reassemble himself. [break][break] LIMITS[break][break]Although large, Stephen's stores of energy are not limitless. Although normal use will not noticeably reduce his stores, heavy use of his powers (such as in pitched battle) can eventually exhaust them, leaving him powerless until after several hours of rest- or more. At full exertion, he can go about two hours before running out of power. [Break][break]
Although he could potentially generate dozens of lasers at once, practical use is limited by his ability to track targets, which, while impressive, is limited, comparable to that of top clay pigeon shooters. He is also limited by the physics of force and lasers. Powerful lasers sustained for long periods of time can result in thermal blooming, diluting the laser's effects. Fog or mist can also interfere with a laser's travel, weakening it, and they are less effective against highly reflective surfaces. [Break][break]
The nature of his power makes it far more effective at long range. Close up, splash effects and radiation could expose him or allies to damage. The nature of his flight makes him less maneuverable than natural flyers, with his top speed limited by G-forces and his need to decelerate. [Break][break]
Stephen's ability to travel as energy also has several limits. For one thing, it can only be used to travel in straight lines. This limits the length of possible jumps by the curvature of the earth. After each jump he needs a recovery period, starting at around two seconds and getting longer depending on the range of the jump. While jumping he can carry his clothes and possibly one other person, but not large objects. [break][break] WEAKNESSES[break][break]
Stephen is radioactive. He can normally control this well enough to make it safe to be around him, but all of his powers carry some risk of him accidentally leaking radiation. If Stephen is in battle, it's best to limit exposure to him, if possible. If he has to focus to unleash a particularly strong use of his power, there's more risk of him giving off radiation. In addition, there is an emotional component to this part of his power: if he is angry or agitated, it's harder to contain his own radiation. The Hero program has provided Stephen with lead-shielded quarters to protect others from this power.
