Serendipity in the City Ashley was hit with the sharp reminder that she would have to pick out a good pair of underpants. Her underwear drawer was pretty plain – mostly pastels, whites and the occasional frill. Maybe she could buy special Disney-themed pants just for the occasion.
No! That was loser talk! She could still win this war of miniature golf, even if there was already a two point gap after just one hole…
“Okay, okay… so you got a little lucky with your first couple of shots,” Ashley teased, twirling her putter before planting it firmly on the ground before the second hole. “Don’t go fantasising about me in my underwear just yet.”
She set up her shot, delicately dropping the golf ball into place and frowning for a moment in concentration as she assessed the situation. Ashley had been confident until she saw Alice’s skills, and now she was hurriedly trying to remember the magic combination of angle and power that she’d managed to lock down the last time she’d played.
“Real skee-ball? I’m a lot better at it than I am at golf…” Ashley admitted with a dejected laugh. She ran a hand back through her dark hair, pushing it out of her eyes in some attempt to focus on the task at hand.
“But hey.”
She swung the putter back and watched with satisfaction as it connected with a clack.
“Maybe today’s my lucky day..!”
The ball looped up and over, dropping cleanly into the 50-hole with immensely gratifying precision. It popped out the side of the machine, rolling smoothly round the tornado-esque spiral that paved the road to skee-victory, before making its way swiftly across the green carpet and wobbling only briefly on the rim of the hole before landing safely in its sweet, mini embrace.
Ashley jumped up and down, clapping excitedly. “I did it! I did it!”
She turned to Alice – not to gloat, but to share in her excitement.
“Go, go! I believe in you!”

Serendipity in the City It wasn’t as busy as she’d been expecting as they entered the vibrant indoor miniature golf centre. There were plenty of people heading upstairs to the restaurant level but the course itself was, thankfully, clear enough that they should be able to enjoy their game at a leisurely pace. Collecting the putters was always fun – measuring themselves up against the colour-coordinated putter to find the right length for their height – and Ashley realised for the first time that she was actually fairly significantly shorter than Alice. The girl definitely had a good few inches on her. Damn, no trying on the supersuit then. Unless she could roll it up at the ankles, which wasn’t quite so majestic.
The first hole had a par of three, which Ashley just missed out on after misjudging what could have been her final putt and sending the ball zooming into the path of some innocent fellow golfers trying to pass by. They stumbled a little as they tried to avoid standing on the ball, but luckily there were no full-on tumbles. That would have been even more embarrassing than her modest score of four, and that was embarrassing enough as it was.
“Just trying to lull you into a false sense of security,” Ashley bluffed, standing back to watch Alice take a shot. “I’m sorry, am I distracting you?” She began to bob up and down, doing her best to catch Alice’s eye. “Aliiiiice, don’t get distracted!”
At that point she collapsed into giggles, unable to continue in her competitive quest to throw Alice off her game. It was fun to try, but Ashley really didn’t have it in her to be completely vindictive. It wasn’t like it mattered who won the game anyway. Besides, the skeeball hole was next, and that was pretty much the only hole that Ashley knew for certain she could get in one. It was all to play for yet…

Serendipity in the City Grabbing Alice’s shoulder, Ashley fixed her with a stern look. “You better. I can’t imagine Will wanting to play dress-up so you’re my only chance for an exclusive sneak-peek at a real life supersuit!”
The word “supersuit” gave Ashley amusing flashbacks to ‘The Incredibles’. How weird to think that those characters could be a genuine, real life family. Maybe they were! Maybe they super-sued in super-court for the use of their super-identities. Or… maybe Ashley’s imagination was getting super out of hand.
“Maybe she’s part of a greater plan, just like you guys. Do you believe in destiny? It could be that those people were ready to go to heaven but you six needed to stick around a little while longer. You gotta admit, the way it’s going, you’re going to change the world.”
Ashley looked out across the city, feeling very small.
“Or maybe you were the first six she came across, and the only six she had time to help. Maybe all this is just-” Ashley shrugged, not entirely convinced by her own point “-serendipity?”
There didn’t have to be a reason that her brother and his new friends had been chosen, she supposed. Maybe they were no more special than the rest of the crash victims.
The notion didn’t sit right with Ashley, but she didn’t have any proof to suggest otherwise. Maybe this was something she needed to discuss further with Will – hopefully he had a clearer idea of the doctor’s aims and motives by now.
Snapping out of her mini-reverie, Ashley turned her attentions to mini golf.
“Ooh you’ll love it, I promise. But hey!” She stuck her tongue out. “Don’t go easy on me! Even if I suuuck, you have to do your best. If I can’t win then I want to at least be impressed. Although, obviously, I’m totally gonna win,” she said with a wink. “So better start thinking of your least embarrassing pair of underwear.”
She shook Alice’s proffered hand, a competitive gleam in her eyes.

Serendipity in the City “HEY, it’s not my fault you didn’t get the memo about compulsory superhero attire,” Ashley said loudly, folding her arms. “I’m just trying to keep the traditions of this ancient and noble profession alive…”
Ashley’s knowledge of superheroes was definitely limited. She’d have to scrub up on her movies if she was going to try and keep up with Will and Alice’s experiences, maybe even read some comics. They must have originally had some basis in truth, right? Wasn’t that part of Will’s investigation? It was weird to think they’d been walking among powered humans all this time and how much of the world she knew had been influenced by their presence. Nothing was the same now.
She could empathise with the nerdy dreams of heroism a little – having pretty lofty dreams of her own. A-list, trophy-adorned musicians seemed to be on a whole other level from Ash and had seemed especially so when she was only just starting out. In a way, it was like Alice had gotten into a car crash and woken up with a number one song, suddenly catapulted into stardom.
…Kinda. Except it was a lot easier to believe in Johnny Cash than the Flash.
“Well I think it’s lucky that you ended up with powers, wanting to do the right thing. I’m sure there’s people who’d use them to do the wrong thing if they could, but fortunately it sounds like the Doctor’s work was blessed with you six.”
She didn’t think the Doctor was an angel any more, but Ashley couldn’t shake the feeling that some divine influence must be at work. She had been praying a lot about the subject ever since Will had first told her about it, even without knowing that he too was to develop powers. She hoped that powers continued to stay in the hands of responsible, honest people like Alice.
Ashley nodded slowly, still unsure about whacking her new friend with a golf club.
“We’d have to catch a couple of buses but there’s a pretty cool indoor place in the Mission. It can get busy but the vibe is cool and the miniatures are nice. Plus I have played there before so I might be a little less handicapped… unless you know it too, of course!”
She jumped to her feet as well, enjoying Alice’s excitement. “Loser has to wear their underwear over their tights during a performance at our Lion King sing-a-long slumber party?” she joked – half-tempted by the wager herself.

Serendipity in the City How dare she roll her eyes at Ashley’s perfectly viable suggestion of using underwear to aid in her fight against crime. It worked for Superman, right? But, no, seriously. “They might just do a low-risk panty-check through a telescope or something, I probably wouldn’t base a tracking system on that,” Ashley chuckled. “Hey, I wonder if the military ever thought to try something like that…” The mental image of super serious army dudes in bright lacy underwear was a little too amusing. Ashley had to rush a hand to her mouth to stop herself from spitting the small mouthful of food she was currently chewing. “Woah,” Ashley said, looking at Alice through new eyes. She was so… righteous. “That’s so selfless of you, Alice. You’re just an ordinary girl who suddenly gets powers and your first instinct is to help others.” She smiled and then shrugged, trying not to embarrass her. “I guess you’re right though, I’d probably feel awful knowing I could definitely help loads of people but chose not to do anything about it. “Plus, this way you get to actually use your powers instead of hiding them.” Unlike the majority of people with powers, according to Will. What an upsettingly fearful existence. Always keeping your true self hidden from the world. The word “Paladin” vaguely rang a bell, but Ashley was grateful for Alice’s clarification. “Ooh, sounds very majestic. Makes sense for somebody who can do the modern day equivalent of rescuing princesses from dragons.” She beamed. “I like it. It’s powerful.” Ashley was pleasantly surprised by Alice’s agreement to follow her mini golf plans. It was harmless, competitive fun. Alice was almost definitely going to win if her boasts were even a little genuine, but that wasn’t really the point. There was something delightful about following the quaint little courses with all their weird miniature obstacles. Ashley was still convinced that getting the ball through a windmill was solely an act of luck. Then Alice surprised her further with talks of testing her power. “You… want me to hit you with a putter?” She guessed it was one way to break the ice. Maybe some bones too...

I Need Noise Cory looked horrified, and Ashley realised immediately that she’d jumped to the wrong conclusion. She felt ashamed that her knee-jerk reaction had been so pessimistic, even if she hadn’t been convinced at all about the seriousness of Cory’s offer of servitude. Suddenly Cory had a lot more words to work with as she rushed to correct Ashley’s mistake. It still stung a little knowing that Cory thought her so elite that there was nothing she - a lowly common member of the public - could offer McKenna Chase. She’d always tried to seem down-to-earth. Maybe that was just an impossible task once you reached a certain level of notoriety. “I don’t have everything I want,” Ashley protested lightly. “And I always appreciate high fives, though I’m more of a personalised secret handshake kinda girl…” It was nice to see that Cory was trying to laugh off the misunderstanding and Ashley was certainly happy to follow. Plus, it was true. Ashley loved a good old secret handshake. She tried her best not to trample over Cory’s apology with her own, settling for insistent shakes of her head. It was mortifying to discover that she’d made negative assumptions, but it was also immensely relieving to discover that they were completely unfounded. Hearing Cory assert that she probably dealt with that kind of scenario all the time, especially labelling it as “shitty”, was pretty validating too. Here was somebody who’d barely dipped a toe in her industry, and even she understood. Ash felt a little less shitty for considering such behaviour shitty. Ah right, she was applying for a job there… “Oh,” she said with a surprised smile. “I get it now. What’s the job? Mixing drinks or cleaning puke?” One of her friends worked shifts at a bar to support his newfound college drinking habits (ironically) and he told many delightful tales of scrubbing vomit from the bathroom tiles. His role sounded less like a cleaner and more like a heavily underpaid babysitter. She was pretty sure the place he worked at just attracted that kind of clientele. Maybe some places weren’t quite so spew-heavy, like the club Cory seemed to keen to work at. She grinned at the offer, expression softening as Cory continued to sound apologetic. “You don’t owe me anything, Coryelle, I promise.” Ashley tried her best to pull out her serious face once more, but it was pretty difficult with her mind occupied by the mental image Cory’s offer had painted. “But… at the same time… I was raised better than to turn down free food and dancing!”

Serendipity in the City “Huh. That’s true.” From the way Alice had said it, Ashley guessed that she had a lot more worries about making rent than Ashley did. She was by no means loaded herself, but she did make a comfortable living and earnt considerably more than a lot of the working peers that she knew. In fact, Ashley never had to worry about making rent. Even if she did suddenly find herself without income in the future, her parents would step in to support her until she could find an alternative source. Maybe Alice didn’t have that particular safety net in place. Or, maybe she was just ferociously independent. She did live alone at 18 after all. “I like surprises!” Ashley exclaimed, horrified at the thought of losing out. “Yeah, imagine never having another surprise party… Well, I mean, that’s a definite first world problem,” she giggled, “But I think it’d probably be quite a boring life. There’d never be another movie plot twist either. So not worth it.” She laughed, imagining Alice in full hero garb, but was also pretty impressed. It sounded like Alice was genuinely going to be starting on this new exciting life, bad guys and superheroes galore. “Well maybe you should get some interesting underwear, it might distract the bad guys,” she suggested mischievously. “Aren’t you like, scared at all? It sounds fun and rewarding and all but... hella dangerous too.” Ashley didn’t fancy her chances as a superhero. She just didn’t have that selfless drive in the way she imagined was necessary of anybody in that line of work. It was that, plus witnessing WIll’s own pressures whilst working on the force, which had steered her away from an interest in following in her big brother’s policeman footsteps. She didn’t want to put her own life in danger to save strangers. Loved ones, sure, but it just didn’t feel like her vocation in life was to do the kinds of things that Alice was suggesting. “Ooh, what’s your hero name then?” She was fully prepared to judge it if it was terrible. Names were important and she didn’t want Alice leaping into her new life with a name like “Princess Punch-and-stuff”. Not that she imagined she would, of course. She didn’t seem the princessy type. “Having a costume sounds so cool… You’re definitely the real deal when you’ve got a costume and secret identity.” Ashley frowned and pulled out the list on her phone once more. “Um… I didn’t really put any ideas down for superpower demonstrations on here… There’s just like, mini golf.” She looked genuinely disappointed. “Seems a kinda lame activity after, y’know.” She gestured vaguely towards Alice. “Not that I want to put you at risk by showing off your powers in public,” Ashley added hurriedly. “But I can’t really think of anywhere to do it safely. Unless you can think of a way to incorporate into mini golf?” She laughed, mood not staying dampened for long. She was still really enjoying her day out with Alice and if she had to miss out on a power display, that was a pretty small price to pay for it. Definitely good value for money, 10/10 Yelp review.

Serendipity in the City “Ya, I just hope he doesn’t start fortune-telling or something ‘cause I do not want spoilers.” Ashley paused. “Although some general hints about my future husband wouldn’t go amiss so mom can get off my back!”
The concept of a future husband was so vague and weird to think about that it was almost like Ashley was imagining him marrying a completely different Ashley – one who actually cared about hanging onto a man. She didn’t mind dating at all, it was quite fun getting to know new people, but no one had ever impressed her to the point of even considering keeping them for life. It felt childish, but she was waiting for something a little more fairy tale. She wanted to feel genuine, needy attraction for somebody.
Simultaneously, however, Ashley was so married to her career that it was hard to imagine making room for a human being.
Pouting at Alice’s refusal to demonstrate, Ashley settled for being intrigued by the concept of secret identity. It was like having a stage name but ten times cooler.
“So are you really going to be a superhero? Fight bad guys, wear underpants over your tights?” It was a hilarious mental image. “Will you have like… a code name?”
She mulled over the last of her slabs of bread and cheese.
“We could always go somewhere else, somewhere super secret,” Ashley insisted conspiratorially. “This is your opportunity to steal my big bro’s number one superhero spot. Spidey sense is cool and all but… he can’t destroy shelving units with it.”
Where could they go? How was Alice even supposed to demonstrate absorbing and sending out energy without any onlookers raising eyebrows? From what she’d said, she could absorb the shock from falls… maybe they’d have to find a really secluded tree and push Alice from it.
Although, that would require more walking for the poor, stamina-challenged little chef.

Serendipity in the City From the tone of Alice’s voice, Ashley felt with the strongest of convictions that Alice’s ability to non-stop Mario Kart her way through a long-haul flight was no joke. Ashley wasn’t exactly a gamer herself but she’d played enough Mario Kart over the years at various friends’ houses to get the basic appeal, even if she couldn’t imagine focusing on it for 11 hours. Maybe like, two. Then she could just nap for the rest of the journey or something.
“Yeah, he just found out about his… stuff. Saved some dude from getting knifed in the middle of the night because of some Super Instinct.”
Try as she might, Ashley couldn’t help the pride that crept into her voice. Her big brother had always been something of a hero to her. A hero wrapped around her little finger, sure, but a hero nonetheless.
She listened with an enchanted smile on her face as Alice explained her own power. It was less mystical than Will’s and fit slightly more into the vague idea Ashley had of what a superhero could do. Shelf destruction and energy absorption? Definitely sounded like a fun power.
“It sounds really cool!” Ashley exclaimed, jumping up in excitement. “You’re like… the real deal! Can you show me, can you show me? Please please please? C’mon, I showed you my super abs…”

Serendipity in the City “I’ll get a nice big one, one of those ones with extra padding, and fill the space with snacks and magazines so you have something to do on the flight,” Ashley said, laughing.
Now the conversation was a whole lot bigger than imaginary tours of Japan. Maybe even bigger than a real tour of Japan. Okay, probably bigger, yeah.
“Oh, the same doctor!”
Doctor was beginning to sound like a made-up word at this point.
If anyone could hear their conversation right now, they’d probably think they’d stumbled across two idiots talking about the most mundane thing in the weirdest way possible. But they didn’t know. They didn’t know about the secret underworld of people with special abilities, people who had contacted her brother and knew that he was a part of it too. They didn’t know that he wasn’t alone, that there was somebody who could throw lightning, an invisible dude and somebody with super tough skin. They didn’t know that Alice was also one of those people now.
She lowered her voice. “Will said that there was a group of you. Is it true? That you can all …do stuff?”
Ashley couldn’t help laughing at herself now.
“I’m sorry, it’s still kinda hard to believe. Will did his best to explain a little while ago, that he’d spoken to this Harry guy or something, that you guys had this miraculous doctor… I think he’s still trying to figure everything out. I can’t believe he’s developed an ability now too…”
Oh, had she said too much? She was pretty sure they were on the same track now and didn’t have to keep dancing around with their words.
“And you too, right?”

Serendipity in the City Sprawling back against the bench, Ashley pressed the back of her hand to her forehead and let out a dramatic sigh. “Oh doctor, I hear Hakuna Matata every time I close my eyes! Why – it’s not a problem-free philosophy at all!!!”
The reference was most likely wasted on Alice, but Ashley was still amused by it.
She got really excited once Alice made the suggestion of touring. Ashley knew it was a possibility, but it just seemed so crazy right now. Would anyone even buy tickets to her shows? She’d be better off going as a support act first, probably, which would still be super cool. “Deal – wanna try and squeeze into my suitcase or shall we say you’re the official caterer?”
Giggling a little self-consciously, Ashley tucked her chin down to inspect her stomach. “These bad boys did take an unearthly number of sit-ups. I’ll take it.”
It was hilarious to think that Alice was thinking of her as the superhero when it was actually her brother who had developed magic powers. To be honest, Ashley was pretty sure that actual superpowers were definite trump cards against well-sculpted abs, no matter how impressive the workload had been to get them.
That wasn’t to say that Will hadn’t been through a lot to get his powers of course. Ashley was pretty sure that the mental scars from nearly dying ran deep enough not to be immediately soothed by the acquisition of supernatural abilities. As if that wasn’t bad enough, another five people had also had to go through the same trauma to achieve that miracle.
Alice had been through that trauma. She’d even ended up in a neighbouring ward. Yet, just like Will, there didn’t seem to be a scratch on her. Sure, Will hadn’t explicitly said that Alice was one of the group of six, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t one. It was all a bit too coincidental – why else would Will still be in touch with her?
“Hey, Alice?” Ashley suddenly became very interested in the papaya, keeping her eyes averted as she tried to think of how best to ask the question without a) outing her brother and b) sounding insane.
“You know Will from the hospital, right?” Ooh this papaya did look juicy – she was genuinely a little distracted by how tasty it looked.
Focus, Ash!
“Did you guys have the… uh, the same doctor?”
She finally tore her gaze from the papaya, looking up at Alice and trying her best to look utterly innocent. The question was definitely a little out of the blue but it wasn’t too weird, right? Either Alice would get what the question really meant, or she’d just think that Ashley was a little scatter-brained. Which is fine. She had her moments.

Serendipity in the City It was funny – Ashley hadn’t really considered Alice’s own singing ability until she’d begun trashing it. She was surrounded regularly by so many talented people that she sometimes forgot that not everybody was a musician. It reminded her of the night that she and some friends from high school had played with a karaoke machine and how Ashley had been almost embarrassed to sing at her full potential. It seemed more fun, in that situation, to get it all terribly wrong so you could laugh about it. If Ashley sang, people were impressed into awed silence. She’d taken to singing songs by men so she could do a comically low voice instead, complete with sharpie moustache.
“Fine, but you can be responsible for putting the rest of them through toy therapy,” she said with a grin.
Alice was every bit as excited about Ashley’s potential for travel as she was. She didn’t even sound jealous, which was nice.
“I’d love to go to Japan,” Ashley said, going starry-eyed herself for a moment. “My manager says it’s a distinct possibility with the way my popularity’s going lately. We’ve been talking branding and publicity and everything. Imagine me in Japanese magazines! Hella cool…”
Feeling glad that cleaning wasn’t on her list of work duties, Ashley nodded sympathetically. “Work hard, play hard, am I right? And hey, I’ll be an excellent training buddy – so long as you don’t mind being pushed.” She watched Alice’s face for a moment, then laughed. “You make me out to be some kind of superhero! Like dude, I’m in shape, but I’m nothing special. Just ‘cause some stairs got you a little out of breath doesn’t mean you can’t soon be lifting weights and running miles with the best of them.”
Ever the optimist, Ashley was genuinely sure that Alice had all the potential in the world to reach her fitness goals. The optimism was fuelled immensely by a desire to have a gym buddy, of course, but she also had high hopes for her new friend. She was probably already stronger than she looked. Working in kitchens was a surprisingly physical job, from what Ashley had heard. Maybe Alice was a secret strong man…

I Need Noise Ashley froze, actually a little taken aback for the first time in their exchange. She hadn’t expected Cory to jump to that kind of thing so soon – hadn’t really expected it at all. She thought that they were just sharing in their love for music. Was Cory actually serious? Surely she didn’t actually think that Ashley – or McKenna – was the type to want a housemaid in exchange for spreading the word of a good remix?
She’d had many tapes and tracks played to her from other aspiring artists and it kinda took the fun out of it once she realised that they were just talking to her so that they could get a foot in the door. If it was genuinely great then of course she wouldn’t just dismiss people’s work, but she’d rather promote people organically.
Biting her lip, Ashley looked at Cory in a mixture of confusion and apprehension. “No, I’m not kidding, it’s awesome. But umm… you really think I’m the kind to hire housemaids?”
There was genuine concern in her voice that this was in fact the impression she was giving off. Ashley cleaned her own damn home thank you very much.
“Sorry I just can’t tell if you’re kidding,” she added, giggling nervously. “But I… y’know. My butler handles all those duties anyway.” She stuck her tongue out teasingly, praying that Cory wouldn’t actually take her seriously. “And I don’t know Club 808… Not technically old enough for that kinda scene yet.”
Plus, too busy for clubbing. Ashley would rather stay up late working than dancing. The closest she really got to that recently was attending a few college parties for friends’ birthdays and the occasional events that McKenna Chase got invited to. They were fun and all, but nothing special and nothing she wanted to rush into. She probably didn’t have much credibility with clubs anyway, unfortunately for Cory. Her songs weren’t exactly dance music.
Although, Cory had transformed this one so far into something perfect for that kind of environment. Definite, definite potential!

Serendipity in the City With the most serious and understanding face she could muster, Ashley gave a sombre nod.
“I understand. Guess we’re sworn, mortal enemies now. Pretty sweet,” she said, breaking out into an amused grin.
…How had Alice never seen the Lion King?? How did someone go through their life without (unquestionably) improving it with one hour, 29 minutes of pure lion-y joy? Ashley had seen every Lion King movie many times. She could vaguely recall trying to re-enact scenes with a borderline-amused, but rather patience-tested, Will in his late twenties. Sometimes she felt like that was just his default mood setting – he hadn’t really changed much over the years.
“Oh, Alice, Aliiice, listen. Next time you have a free evening, and I have a free evening, and those free evenings happen to align, we are going to have a sleepover and I am going to find as many cuddly lions from my childhood as I can and we are going to get some tissues and weep over the beauty of the Lion King. Then I’ll teach you the whole soundtrack and we can sing it to our stuffed animal audience through hairbrush microphones.” She giggled. “It’ll be amazing.”
Ashley liked Disney movies.
Wondering just how much fat was in the delicious blue cheese she was currently sampling, Ashley made a grumbled noise of agreement. “Surely if we’re made in His image we shouldn’t have to work to maintain it… And there’s no way He’s not a fan of cheese.”
It was strange to think about the more nomadic aspects of her lifestyle. She was currently pretty securely based in San Francisco while they were doing studio work, but she still had to fly out to LA, among other cities, on a pretty regular basis. Memories of touring and festivals felt almost distant.
“Born and raised,” Ashley said with a proud beam. “I’ve been in town quite a lot lately because I’m doing a lot of recording and writing at the moment, but I’ve got a few gigs lined up for later in the summer – here, there and everywhere.” She flailed her arms randomly to illustrate this. “And dude, I always have time to exercise. Sometimes I have to do it super early or super late but there’s always a lot somewhere in my schedule. I don’t do like, huge workouts everyday.” Ashley wrinkled her nose at the thought. “But it’s pretty easy to squeeze in a little session if you’re motivated.
“Why, are you worried that you don’t have the time for it? I guess chefs have pretty long days…” Ashley said, knowing next to nothing about chefs. They had a lot of food to make, right? People always needed food, inexplicably at every hour of the day.

Serendipity in the City “Oh?”
Ashley raised her eyebrows. “You haven’t had to undo the buttons of your pants yet? Mmmyep, definitely need more cheese.”
With that she attempted to shove Alice’s handful of food towards her mouth, not really caring too much about her aim. If Alice got brie smeared all over her face, then that was just karma for bragging while waggling her eyebrows.
Feeling a little distressed for having obliterated someone’s childhood, Ashley began to try and think of something to say that would make it better. Then, upon coming up with absolutely nothing, she decided to continue piloting the Pain Plane into new horizons of nostalgia.
“Oh yah, he was pretty unimpressed by anyone who dared to get old. Other fun facts: in the original story, the Little Mermaid turns into sea foam after not getting the guy. Ummm… If Finding Nemo happened IRL, his dad would have turned into a female clownfish and bred with Nemo after the mom got eaten. Oh – and Simba singing about how he just can’t wait to be king technically means he couldn’t wait for his dad to die.”
She took a breath, then patted Alice on the shoulder. “Sorry, but I think that’s your childhood well and truly six feet under.”
She giggled. Hopefully Alice would get the dark turn in humour. If not, she could just feed her woes with cheese.
“The gym’s not for everyone,” Ashley said, cheerful for the change of topic. “Except Ash’s Gym, of course, I hear that’s a very welcoming establishment.” She giggled. “And hey, they could be healthy treats! Anyway, it just means you have to work a little harder for the reward.”
After all this fro-yo, cheese, fruit and bread, Ashley was definitely going to have to make a conscious effort in her next gym session to balance it all out. Treats were good – essential, even – but keeping fit, healthy and in good shape were even better.
