Serendipity in the City “You’ll make a fro-yo junkie out of me,” Ashley said sadly as she licked a bit of frozen yoghurt she’d missed from her spoon. “But you know what they say, tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all…” She looked dramatically into the mid-distance. “Or whatever.”
She didn’t really like that quote. Love didn’t really seem to fall into place for her. Sometimes it felt like she wasn’t even really seeking love, just something to confirm that she was normal. It frustrated her to no end that she’d not met even one guy who she thought could do that for her. There hadn’t even been the faintest of sparks, leading her to believe that maybe it wouldn’t ever happen. The only thing that held her back from fully drawing that conclusion was that she was not an idiot, and knew that she was still far too young and career-minded to really worry about such things yet.
It seemed like Alice wasn’t really at the place she wanted to be yet. There was no way Ashley could ever describe her own work as “just making ends meet”, but then again, she knew she’d struck lucky with her career. Others weren’t always so blessed at her age – Alice included, apparently.
“Cooking’s cool,” Ashley insisted. “I wish I could cook. Never really had the time or motivation to learn, I think.” She prodded a strawberry, toppling it into a little pool of honey that was collecting at the bottom of her pot. She watched with satisfaction as it soaked up the sweetness before popping it into her mouth. “And me? No, I’m not in college. Kinda jumped straight out of high school into work. I might do it later, I think,” she said with a hopeful smile.
“Only if there’s something really cool to study though. I met this professor in LA recently who seemed to teach pretty interesting music programs so I’ll have to keep him in mind, I think. But yeah, no, I’m not in the police,” Ashley said with an amused chuckle. “I saw how much stress Will got out of it. I make music,” she explained. “Doing pretty well with it,” she added modestly, desperately wanting to avoid bragging.
“It’s not exactly the most secure career path but it’s the only one I’ve ever wanted to follow so I just went with my gut, you know? Some call it a vocation, others call it a reckless gamble.” Ashley shook her head with a giggle. “My family and friends are supportive though, and that’s all that really matters!”

Serendipity in the City With a tiny sigh of frustration, Ashley eventually came to a decision on her toppings. It was largely influenced by the guy’s amusing dismissal of the previous iteration of honey, which no doubt tasted a darn sight better than corn syrup. She watched with delight as Alice’s creation came to life, her interest in the fancy Greek honey definitely piqued.
“Oh Alice, that looks so good,” she said quietly as it was handed over. The fro-yo guy then turned to her. No going back now, she had to stick with her decision. Bye bye kiwi…
She leaned over the counter to point out her choices as she began to list them, “Can I have… strawberries, obviously… and then some of that – is that granola? – that granola, and um, that honey too, please?” She grinned at Alice. “Couldn’t help myself, it looks gooood.”
There were only a couple of tables in the place but Ashley fancied spending a little more time in the fro-(Greek?)-yo place. It had a nice atmosphere and she didn’t really have anywhere else for them to go just yet. When they had a moment, she’d be sure to consult her list of ideas again. For now, however, it was time to enjoy frozen Greek yoghurt at its finest.
She scooped an abnormally large amount of fro-yo from the pot, honey dribbling over the edges of the spoon, and shoved it straight into her mouth. Eyes closed, she savoured it for a moment.
“Mmmm.” She looked up at Alice. “Okay, you were right, this is amazing. Just so you know, you’ve ruined all other fro-yo for me forever.”
Ashley laughed through another mouthful of fro-yo. “So what do you do, anyway? Are you on summer break or something?”
It was a natural assumption for her that most people her age went to college – almost all of her high school friends had after all. It was still something that she herself was interested in, maybe once she’d built up enough savings and reached a satisfactory point in her career. The one flaw in this plan was, of course, that Ashley wasn’t sure what that satisfactory point was. She had pretty high ambitions after all.

Serendipity in the City Ashley’s eyes widened a little, but she wasn’t really sure what to say. Will had told her that there were five others who’d survived the accident in the same miraculous way that he had – it was possible that Alice was one of those five. He’d mentioned a few names of people who’d also developed superpowers but she was pretty sure Alice hadn’t been one of them, so she couldn’t be certain. Regardless, probably best not to bring it up right now. It was a pretty private topic, and there was fro-yo to be enjoyed.
“Please, Will barely handles relationships period, let alone questionable ones,” she laughed, sticking her tongue out. She felt mean, but she knew that the same sentiment applied to her as well. Their poor mother was definitely going to go without grandkids at this rate.
They entered the store, Alice’s enthusiastic endorsements still echoing in Ashley’s head and feeding her appetite. It was pretty cute – obviously not the nicest building but they did well with the space they had – with an infectiously energetic atmosphere and proud, shiny surfaces. Alice was right, they had a bountiful selection of toppings that definitely included strawberries. There was so much choice, in fact, that Ashley was a little paralysed in her decision-making process.
The guy at the counter was delightfully charming, welcoming Alice like a fond old uncle. It was obvious that he took great pride in his work and that he did it well.
“Hi,” Ashley said, her little wave an almost exact (accidental) copy of the one Alice had made earlier. “I’m Ash. I’m here for strawberries and what Alice here referred to as "the most heavenly creation known to man". No pressure,” she added, grinning as she leant against the counter. She was sure he’d love to hear that someone had been promoting his business, even more so when that someone was obviously a well-loved regular.
Her eyes wandered over the topping options once more. Kiwi! Melon! Oh man, so many decisions.
“What are you gonna get?” she asked, looking across to Alice.

Serendipity in the City Ooh, a wave! Now that was a good idea. Ashley beamed broadly in response, bouncing up onto her toes a couple of times. “Dude, don’t apologise, I’m really grateful that you’ve decided to spend your free time with a total stranger, okay?” Alice was glowing a hearty shade of red, so Ashley was relieved to watch it fade once the conversation had moved on. She hadn’t wanted to make the girl uncomfortable already.
Her heart dropped for a brief moment at Alice’s blunt refusal, smile only returning to her face once Alice elaborated.
“Alice!” she scolded. “You scared me!” She giggled, stepping back to let Alice lead the way to this “most heavenly creation”. As a low-key coffee shop snob, Ashley was secretly pleased that Alice had a better alternative away from the usual chains. Not only was it bound to be better value, but it probably had a much nicer atmosphere. Almost definitely, if Alice was singing its praises.
She moved quickly to keep up with Alice, noting that there was actually a fair difference in height between the two of them. Not much, but enough to make Ashley look up a little when talking.
“So how do you know my brother, Alice? Are you like… his secret illegitimate daughter or something?”
Will had been vague, so it was always a possibility, although somehow Ashley didn’t think he was quite capable of keeping a child hidden from her. He probably wasn’t even capable of lying to her about what he had for breakfast. Still, it seemed pretty random that he and Alice knew each other, let alone that they were good enough friends for him to successfully throw his sister at to entertain.
“I hope they have strawberries. If they don’t have strawberries I swear I am walking right back out again. I have a craving that can only be satisfied by the sweetest of strawberries!”

Serendipity in the City The very first impression that came to mind as Alice let herself out the door to greet Ashley was that her hair was the exact same colour as Ashley’s nails. It was freaking awesome, and she was having to hold back from grabbing hold of Alice’s head to compare shades of blue. She hadn’t really known what to expect beyond the fact that they were the same age. She was mostly just relieved that she’d got the right apartment, but also feeling pretty optimistic about how her day was going to pan out.
“Yah, Will’s baby sister,” she said with a grin. “Thank you so much for agreeing to baby-sit me on such short notice, I promise it’ll be super fun!”
Should they shake hands? Hug? Ashley hung back for the moment, hands stuffed into the back pockets of her jeans until she could figure out what to do with them. She pulled her phone out from her bag and pulled up the list of potential things-to-do that she’d created on her way over.
“I was just thinking of some stuff we could do before lunch, nothing crazy…” She scrolled down the list, scrutinising each item carefully, trying to figure out what Alice might want to do. She seemed pretty alternative, but it was too early to tell. For now, they needed to just do something general, something everyone liked…
“Fro-yo?” Ashley suggested, looking up to Alice with a hopeful expression. “We could try and find a Yogurtland or something. Go for a walk, eat our weight in fro-yo. If you like frozen yogurt.”
She laughed, freeing one of her hands to slap herself on the forehead.
“Duh! Who am I kidding, everyone likes fro-yo, right?”
In spite of this statement she kept watchful eyes on Alice, gently praying that the other girl would be in agreement. C’mon, she had to like it. Even Ashley’s dad liked frozen yogurt, and before he tried it he’d called it “healthy stuff pretending to be ice cream”. She wondered if Will was a fan – she’d have to take him out for some sometime.

Serendipity in the City The last few days had been extremely positive, and Ashley was starting to get the feeling that things were all about to fall into place. A song from an old EP had suddenly blown up in a small corner of the internet and she was starting to get hints from her manager that McKenna Chase was on the verge of going global. Okay, so her days had been saturated with meetings, which meant less time in studio, but at least the meetings had been exciting for the most part. At one point they were even discussing how to do her branding in Japan. Japan!
Of course, it wasn’t like she was about to become an international star overnight, but she was getting recognised across a slightly broader range of audiences now. It was encouraging and made her feel like the world was out there for the taking.
She’d decided to spend the morning of her well-deserved day-off chilling with her parents, followed by a quick visit to Will to see if he fancied going out for coffee. Her original afternoon plans had been to hang out with a few friends from high school but they had all dropped out last minute. Two of them had work to do, apparently, and the third was having to step in as an emergency babysitter for her sister. Lame, but Ashley was sure to find something else to do. It was a shame though, she’d really been looking forward to taking a little break from the constant rush of her professional life (fun though it was) and just chill out with the girls. There’d even been talk of fro-yo and mini golf… sigh. It wouldn’t be quite the same on her own. Maybe she’d hit the gym instead.
Will was still on that crazy case of his. It was in equal parts terrifying and amazing, with the added information that Will himself seemed to have developed powers. Once Ashley had finished freaking out and he had explained as best he could, he reluctantly informed her that he had some place to be. It was connected to the situation in some way – she could tell – so Ashley let him go. She would have liked the opportunity to ask him how his date with Charlie went but that could definitely wait.
She just had to make one last-ditch attempt to fill her day with socialisation, not that she was expecting anything from Will. He was a lot older and not the hugest social butterfly. He’d cut himself off from his dad, of course, but maybe there was a distant cousin on that side or something that could be magically perfect for Ashley to befriend? Or maybe like… someone super young from SFPD that he’d gotten along with?
“Hey… before you go, um… Okay, this is a weird question, but do you know anyone who might like to hang out with me today? Everyone I know here is either busy, out of town, or somebody that I work with.” She pulled a sad face. “Anyone at all?”
What she had not expected was for Will to think of somebody. Especially somebody who actually seemed to tick all the boxes.
She approached the buzzer of the unfamiliar apartment building, praying that she’d remembered the correct address. She was weirdly excited.
“Uh, hi! So, like… Are you Alice?”
Ashley took a deep breath, smiling before continuing.
“My brother said you’d be cool to hang out with, sooo here I am!”

String Theory Ashley grinned, enjoying Alistair’s positive retort. “What can I say? I’m an impressive girl.” She jokingly flexed her arms to illustrate her point. It was a fair demonstration, in actual fact, because it was quite obvious that she was in shape. Her muscles weren’t large by any means, but they were well toned. For all that she was kidding around, her guns sure weren’t.
It felt like her modest musical CV had earned some kind of respect, which was nice. McKenna Chase was hardly publicised as the music geek that Ashley truly was at heart so she rarely got the opportunity to show off. She liked to mention the mandolin because it had been a gift from her high school music teacher. The guitar was definitely where she was most comfortable but that didn’t mean she didn’t like to branch out. As she’d said, she was definitely “okay” at the piano but she just didn’t click with it in the same way. Music was weirdly personal like that.
“Cello?” she echoed, eyes wide. “Man, that’s cool, I have got to hear you play some time. It’s a shame you can’t just pull one out your pocket, huh.” Despite herself, Ashley peeked over the table to make sure there wasn’t a cello poking out of his waistcoat.
The question caught her by surprise, and again she was disappointed with herself by the ensuing internal debate. Of course she wanted dessert.
“What does this place have? If it’s chocolate flavoured, count me in.”

String Theory “Don’t say stuff like that without being serious,” Ashley warned, a mischievous gleam in her eye. “I’ll make you keep to that, Mr Alistair! Before you know it you’ll be supervising my thesis or something. Which, I’m warning you now, will drive you mad.”
She probably shouldn’t finish this sandwich, her manager would kill her if she knew how much bacon she was planning on consuming in one sitting. They had a difference of opinions when it came to the definition of a healthy lifestyle. Ashley kept fit and exercised, rewarding herself with a balanced diet that was nonetheless filled with treats, while she was sure a lot of girls in her career did less exercise but made up for it by heavily restricting what they ate. She couldn’t handle the stress of that, to be honest. As long as she could continue to be happy with what she saw in the mirror, Ashley wasn’t about to start counting calories.
It annoyed her that she’d even thought of not finishing the sandwich. She took a huge bite out of spite, suddenly determined to consume the whole thing immediately.
“That’s nice!” she said quickly. “It’s hard to keep in touch with people when you’re busy, but I think it’s worth the effort.”
Ashley watched him delicately folding his rubbish, faintly amused and faintly confused. She hoped he wasn’t doing it out of boredom. Maybe it was just a habit.
“We are so lucky; he’s especially lucky,” she said with a laugh. “I totally set him up on a date this week. I haven’t told mom yet cause she’d freak about baby names or whatever. Kidding,” Ashley added quickly, worried that she was giving too bad an impression of her admittedly kinda-obsessive mother. “But ya, just call me cupid.”
She smiled as he moved into full “listening” mode. Maybe he was actually enjoying talking to her… Yay!
“I sing and play guitar… I’ve messed around with ukulele and mandolin too but not really enough to say I can play them properly, you know? I’m okay at piano too. Don’t give me drumsticks, there is way too much multi-tasking involved with drums,” she said, giggling. “I’ve been wanting to try something different so I can work it into the studio but I’m not really sure where to start. I’m quite into songs with bowed strings in at the moment I guess. They’ve got a nice… classical vibe.” She wasn’t really sure how to describe her attraction to the sound, but she hoped he would understand.
“What do you play?”

String Theory There was a certain pride and fondness in Alistair’s tone as he spoke of his students. Obviously he was extremely flattered and slightly bemused by word of his students’ praise, perhaps tinged with a warm sense of affirmation. Ashley always liked to hear feedback from people who had played her music to their friends and family – particularly (obviously) when it was positive. Hearing that she’d “gained a new fan” was music to her ears.
“Oh come on, there must be a few naughty kids,” she teased. “A bad apple or two always spices up the classroom, right?”
Ashley bit her lip, pondering whether she’d have been a good college student. From what she could tell, it was a very different experience to high school. “I think I might do some more studying some day,” she said, a little quietly. “I’ve sorta prioritised my career for now but it would be nice to get a bachelor’s if life ever gets less hectic. Hey, maybe you can be my future teacher!”
Her eyes lit up as she said this, her enthusiasm genuine. She was already wondering if she could broach the subject of some music lessons but was holding back for now.
It took Ashley a little while to process what he meant by not being in a solid home until high school, and once she did figure it out she felt her hand rise involuntarily to her mouth. Alistair didn’t seem too concerned about discussing the subject but she still felt bad for assuming he’d been raised in the typical nuclear family setup.
“Ya, I was always too short to hit anyone very hard,” Ashley laughed. “I could probably hold my own a lot more now that I actually go to the gym,” she mused, “But I think I’d take music over football any day.”
Ashley couldn’t help but beam at his comment on dedication. “They’re really supportive, it’s amazing. My mom especially – although I think more because she’s hoping being famous will land me a guy,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “And my big brother has always been there for me too. He’s like, my number one cheerleader,” she added, grinning. “Without the short skirts and pompoms. And the cheer routines. And the- oh, you get it.” Ashley giggled and took a large bite of her sandwich in a bid to keep herself from rambling. Ahhh… it was goddamn delicious.

Chase You Down “Mortal injuries that were magically fixed overnight,” Ashley pointed out. “I’m gonna throw out a wild guess and say that it’s more the stress of all this new information to figure out - not to say that mortal injury isn’t a traumatic experience,” she added hurriedly. “Not what I meant.”
She tipped her head back as she finished off her cappuccino, savouring every last drop. A little cream that had stuck to the rim of the cup left a trace on her face, which she wiped away with a giggle. “Oops.” Ashley took a moment to put her serious face back on. “Literally, don’t overlook a single thing. You could be… um… a shapeshifter? Have you been feeling feline lately?”
Will decided to do his sister a favour and ignore her misstep; Ash was many things, but she would never be deliberately dismissive of someone’s traumatic experiences. “I’ve been getting some bad headaches lately, but that’s all.”
“Have you been drinking anything else besides coffee?” Ashley demanded, adopting a mock-scolding tone. “You should take care, headaches aren’t fun. Although… maybe it’s a sign that you’re gonna grow horns or something.”
Wow Ash. ‘headaches aren’t fun’. Honestly, Will did love his sister. But sometimes, she fell into the bad habit of treating him like a child. It would’ve annoyed him more, but he still remembered her being a child, which was always good for helping him deal with her mock-scolding.
Will gave a long-suffering sigh. “Yes Ash, I’ve been drinking stuff other than coffee. And I very much doubt that I’m growing horns right now, that would just be silly. If people’s powers changed their biology against their will, we would’ve found them much earlier than now. It can’t be easy hiding horns or a tail.”
“Just checking.” Ashley pouted. “And it might not be easy, but I bet that at some point people with powers were close to being exposed. That’s why we’ve got all those myths and stories, right?”
She rested her chin on her hands, pulling a face. It really didn’t seem like there was much she could do to help Will with this which, while not super surprising, sucked. Without having access to this secret world of people with supposed supernatural abilities, gathering facts was going to be a tricky process. Ashley looked around the room, desperately seeking some kind of inspiration.
Suddenly, inspiration struck.
Unfortunately for Will, it was entirely irrelevant.
A mischievous grin spread across her features, lighting up her dark eyes. “Do you like her?”
The change in subject caught Will off guard, and he was lost for a few moments as his mind shifted tracks. It was no help though, he was still just as confused, though Ash’s grin was sending a cold shiver down his spine. She only ever smiled like that when she thought she was going to have fun, and Will had been her victim far too often to not be worried. “What? What do you mean? Do I like who?”
Ashley nodded her head towards the friendly barista who’d served them, grin still firmly in place. “Her, silly. Are you finished with that?” she added, gesturing to his cup.

Chase You Down She tried not to feel so numb and nauseous. It was difficult, but Ashley eventually managed to calm herself down with the sudden rather obvious reminder that Will hadn’t actually died. With a deep, steadying breath, she met his gaze.
“I suppose you don’t believe she was an angel,” she said softly.
Will felt guilty for putting it so bluntly, seeing the effect his words had on his sister. But he couldn’t undo that now, so he’d have to make the best of it. “No Ash, I don’t.” His tone was gentle, but uncompromising. “I didn’t know what to believe at first, but the same night I was discharged I came back to the hospital, and met her. I wanted to know why, how she saved us.
“She was annoyingly cryptic, talking about changes and birthrights. But after she left, I spoke to someone else. His name is Harry, and he told me something… incredible, and terrifying.”
Nobody ever notices just how far they’re leaning forward in their seat until they nearly topple from it. Ashley took a moment to correct her balance, not wanting to ruin the drama of the moment with a tumble into her own coffee. “What did he say? Could he tell you what she meant?”
“Are you sure you want to know, Ash? As of this moment, I know more than any of the other survivors, unless one of them was visited by someone after our last meeting, and even I don’t have enough of the pieces to make a coherent picture. Even as little knowledge as I have might be dangerous.”
Wide-eyed, Ashley respectfully considered his warning. Of course she wanted to know everything - there could be no secrets between these two - but the warning label was certainly a bold one. All caps, flashing.
“I won’t force you…” she began, with a tone suggesting that she already knew that she wouldn’t have to, “But I think I do wanna know, yeah. Maybe I can help you figure stuff out!”
Ashley had always known him too well, and he knew her too well to believe that she would ever accept being left unaware. But he had needed to try.
“Harry told me that… well, it seems crazy. He told me that all the old legends, of vampires, werewolves, ghosts and UFOs were all true, from a certain point of view. Not that those things actually exist, but that there was something. People with, extraordinary abilities, who lost control of their powers.
“He told me, essentially, that magic, or psychic powers or whatever you want to call it, is real, and that there have been a group of people with such powers living, hidden from ordinary people, for centuries.”
Huh, that would explain the apparent Twilight phase. “You’ll forgive me for agreeing with you in saying that yeah, that does seem crazy.” She frowned for a second, hoping that this wasn’t all the result of Will hitting his head a little too hard. He seemed genuine, at least, but that didn’t exactly dispel the brain damage theory.
“You’re telling me superpowers are real and somehow connected to you?” Ashley laughed, nervously. “What, can you fly now? Or is the doctor the secret superhero?”
Of course she didn’t believe him. Not that Will was particularly surprised. Ash had always been the more grounded one, the one most comfortable in the world as it was. For Will, something had always been… missing. Particularly since he’d left the SFPD.
“I don’t know. Hell, I don’t even know if Harry was telling the truth at all. But I think he was. Dominic, one of the others, can throw lightning now. Claire apparently has impenetrable skin. Mason is invisible. Jesus, maybe I smacked my head a little too hard and all of this is one huge delusion.
“I don’t even know whether the doctor has altruistic motives. She didn’t seem malicious, she saved six people for seemingly no reward after all, but Harry said she wanted to reveal them to the world, and he was pretty damn convinced that would be bad. I’m sorry Ash, I really am. I just don’t know.”
The story was so wild, so weird, even for Will’s tastes. Yet… Ashley was deciding to believe him. She had nothing to lose in doing so and so much to potentially gain if she could understand this wonderful, colourful tale that Will was spinning for her. Wonderful, but scary too. Will’s expression was certainly not trying to convince her that any aspect of this was trivial - far from it.
“The doctor did all that? She gave you guys these abilities?” Ashley leaned back. “I don’t know if she seems so bad, sounds like this Harry dude is the one with something to hide. Is that what you’re trying to figure out?”
She gasped. “And wait! What’s your power?!”

String Theory Ashley giggled. “Well, let’s compromise – how about Mr Alistair?”
She hoped that he’d pick up on her tone and recognise the suggestion for the joke that it was. The moment they’d stepped out of the lecture theatre, Alistair Lane had seemed much less confident. Maybe she was being too bold, too presumptuous, forcing him out for lunch with her. After a performance like that, she could imagine the need for peace, quiet and recharging.
Personally though, Ashley never really felt that need. After a night on stage, Ashley would ride the high like an excitable surfer. Being surrounded by people wasn’t exhausting – it was energising! There was nothing that she wanted to do more than collect with fellow human beings and blabber away until it was all she could do to keep her eyes open, feeling alive in the glow of attention. Obviously, there were times when Ashley wasn’t actively socialising… they just weren’t as common for her as she knew they could be for others.
The change in Alistair’s disposition was most apparent as he hurriedly dismissed her praises. Gosh, she was starting to feel bad for thrusting this social situation upon him. Maybe she should’ve just grabbed his email and left.
“Hey, just what a couple of kids from your school told me,” she said gently. “Anyone who can get a college student to show up, let alone enjoy the lecture, must be pretty good.”
Ashley hadn’t been to college but she knew plenty from high school who were currently studying. More accurately, she knew plenty who should be studying, but were probably napping.
It was Ashley’s turn for modesty. “Oh I don’t know about successful – on my way, I think.”
She went for the BLT, as per Alistair’s suggestion, and did her best to rein in any protests over lunch payments. It was a bad habit of hers and she’d recently made a resolution to appreciate people’s acts of generosity more. After all, she was quite the hypocrite when the situation was reversed. Ashley had fond memories of tackling a friend in middle school for objecting to a free milkshake. (They’d been en route to giving their money to Ashley’s mum; a tackle was definitely justified).
“So tell me, Mr Alistair, how did you get into music? Did your parents approve?”
Her parents had always been nothing but exceptionally supportive of all of Ashley’s endeavours, but she knew plenty who had had to fight to prove that they could make a career from their passion. Parental disapproval was a common theme amongst many of her fellow musicians but, hey, at least it gave them something to write about.

Chase You Down It was funny, really, the way things had come full circle. Will had (completely unintentionally, admittedly) skipped out on their originally scheduled hang-out, and now they were finally going to go grab a coffee together just like she’d wanted originally. Well… Ashley would probably have to stick to something decaf. An old vocal coach had been horrified to hear of Ashley’s caffeine habit and promptly preached of its dehydrating effects and subsequent danger to her vocal cords. A little coffee here and there was okay, apparently, but Ashley still respectfully avoided it when she was spending a lot of time in the studio just in case that coach popped out of nowhere and chastised her once more.
Vampires and werewolves sounded a strange basis for a case. Ashley was used to her brother focusing on concrete events from the current century – not old fairy tales. She hadn’t heard any recent "crazy" stories but that was hardly surprising. She was working hard and keeping up with current affairs was hardly a possibility let alone a priority.
Maybe it had been a bluff? Some joking comment meant to keep her at bay from the real matter at hand?
No… Not quite. Maybe he’d meant it to sound ludicrous, but he would have no reason to fabricate something so ridiculous. If he’d really wanted to keep his work a secret he could have told her that it was something really boring like… tenancy violations, or something. She wouldn’t ever tell him to his face, of course, but Ashley had preferred hearing Will’s tales of police work. The reality of being a private investigator was actually a little mundane.
She linked her arm through his, smiling up at him. “You’re so kind to let me win all the time,” she teased, poking her tongue out. “Coffee on me? You know, as a consolation prize.”
San Francisco was keen on its coffee shops. Fortunately it wasn’t too late, as Ashley found that there was a severe lack of those willing to stay open past 7pm at the latest. She’d found one that shut at 10pm, but that was it. The late night coffee shop culture just didn’t quite thrive in this city in the same way that it did in other places for some reason.
Will would know a good place to go. She’d follow his lead. Then, once they were settled with drinks in hand, she’d take the reins again and find out all about this mysterious new case of his.

Chase You Down Ashley was disappointed – Will was being pretty dismissive of his work. Either he was shaken up from the crash and struggling to find motivation or there was something at the centre of his work, something integral to grabbing his attention, that was too complex to explain to her. The vague reference to “crazy stories” was pointing her more in the direction of the latter explanation but that didn’t mean she could rule the first out entirely.
Will poured his heart and soul into his detective work. For someone who was normally a pretty quiet guy with a relatively good hold over his feelings, he became a whole new person once he engaged with a case. If anything should be affected by personal emotional turmoil, surely it would be that which he was so desperately passionate about. A traumatic ordeal was generally considered quite upsetting by most people’s standards.
She raised an eyebrow. “Will Chase, you have never dabbled in your life. It’s always been all or nothing!” She stood up and made her way over to the board, standing in front of it with her hands on her hips. “You gonna tell me what’s so interesting or do I have to deduce it myself?”
Ashley twirled her imaginary moustache in thought.
“Vampires and werewolves, though? God forbid you aren’t going through your Twilight phase.”
She grinned at him teasingly. He’d been there to witness her own Twilight phase after all. It had been perfect fodder for the average teenage girl and Ashley had consumed it in excess for all of six months before she finally gave in to Will’s pleading advice and read the text more critically. She’d been forced eventually to admit that the books were… not great.
“It’s probably good you haven’t got much work to do, what with the accident and all,” she said with a smile. “I’m swamped, as usual, but I’m always happy to try and make time if you need to catch up – keep busy, as you say.” Her worrying over Will’s mental state had not dissipated when the suspicions that he was hiding something grew. If anything, they blended together into a colourful cocktail of sisterly concern.

String Theory “Great! I love sandwiches!”
Ashley leapt at the invitation. She didn’t need to be out of here until 1:00 pm, which gave her plenty of time to continue enjoying her free time. There was something so satisfying about guilt-free time off. It wasn’t like she could be doing much else. Besides, she liked to think that attending a lecture and hanging out with an extremely knowledgeable professor after class was pretty productive. At least she wasn’t holed up in her hotel room having a bubble bath or something.
Mmm bubble baths.
She walked with him, trying her hardest to make it look effortless to keep up with this giant of a man. It was tough. Ashley was in heels and still probably at least a whole foot shorter than him.
“So what can I call you? Mr Lane?” It felt awkward to call him anything more formal than his first name, but she didn’t want to make him feel uncomfortable in his place of work if he was used to being addressed in a certain way by his students.
She decided to introduce herself to get the ball rolling. He hadn’t reacted to her surname so she assumed he wasn’t all too familiar with McKenna Chase as a musician which, while not surprising, was the softest and most minor of blows to her. Sure, she wasn’t exactly famous, but she’d been hoping that he might have heard of her in passing at least considering his profession. Hey, no big deal, she was promoting and publicising for a reason.
“You can call me Ash if you like,” she began, smiling up at him and trying not to crane her neck too much. “I write music as McKenna Chase, kinda… country pop stuff,” she said with a happy shrug. “I’ve been in studio for what feels like forever and I’ve got all these voices around me trying to tell me what to write and how it should sound – ugh, you gotta understand how crazy it makes me. I love my job, don’t get me wrong,” Ashley added with a laugh.
“I want to make real, good music. I’ve been trying my hardest to experiment without pushing the songs out of radio-friendly territory and I think I’m pretty good at it for the most part but I can also accept my limitations,” she said, sticking her tongue out. “Someone said you’re, like, the authority on music so… here I am!”
