| Will wondered if he'd been wrong. If, perhaps, Dominic was not as talented a salesman as he'd appeared, because he'd definitely misread the PI.
Will wasn't the kind of man that could just accept things as they were, could accept that there were things he would never be able to explain or to truly understand. Everything came from something, everything had a cause. If you could not find a reason, that didn't mean there wasn't one but merely that you lacked what was needed to discover it. Will could just stop trying to understand the abilities he and the others had gained, to do so would be totally against his character, in violation of who he was.
There was always an explanation. Always.
But Will was not so foolish as to think he could find an accurate explanation for the powers they had gained on his own, particularly not when he knew that there were people out there who would know more than him in that regard. The doctor, for instance, had given them these abilities in the first place; she had to understand them, at least in part.
But she was not there, and Will was not so foolish as to think he could find her with any appreciable haste. She and her - their - kind had stayed hidden this long, and even from the short meeting he had had with her he had learned enough to be sure that she was the kind of person who would not be found unless they wished to be.
No, much as he might wish it otherwise he had no choice but to accept the truth as Dominic had told it. There was no way, yet, for him to learn anything more.
He gave a rueful chuckle. "I wish I could be so faithful, but I'm afraid that I am not so blessed. But anyway, you said Alice had found her ability; what is it? I doubt there's any connection to any of the others we have encountered, judging off the current pattern, but there's always a chance."
"I don't suppose you've had any contact with the other powered people yet? I haven't seen anyone since that night, and it's starting to make me anxious."

| Of course Dominic had noticed something was different about him. Will didn't know the man very well, but he knew enough to realize that he had a mind as sharp as a steel trap.
The younger man opened the warehouse door to let them in, showing it off with the air of a trained showman. Saying so much, and yet so little. Will made sure to examine the location for himself; he'd met too many used car salesmen to ever truly trust the words of a talented wordsmith, no matter how genuine they seemed.
But the question was a pertinent one, and Will dragged himself away from his contemplations to answer it, hoping that maybe Dominic would notice something he'd missed.
"I stopped a murder this morning. A woman was about to kill her husband and his lover, and I stopped her."
Will had been standing still, hands hanging at his sides, but as he spoke he began to pace back and forth; it was a bad habit, and one that frequently annoyed both his sister and mom, but it helped him think, so this was one area where he'd never folded. They just had to deal with it.
"I had no way of knowing what would happen. There was no evidence, nothing. Nothing at all that I could have seen or heard. I just... I felt something. A pressure inside my skull. A certainty, that something dangerous was nearby, that something awful was likely to happen, and soon. I followed that feeling, and I saved a man."
"And I have no idea how I knew that."
Will despised his own lack of knowledge, ironic considering that he was, so far as he knew, the only one of their group to have actually had a conversation with people possessing abilities about said abilities.
"I sometimes find myself thinking I just imagined it, that there's something I saw but can't remember. But I'm not so foolish as to attempt to deny that something has changed, even if I don't know what I can do. What was it like for you and the others?"
Dominic had seemingly had no trouble using his own ability when they had met before, despite having no more training than Will did. But, while the other man seemed to have a fairly straight forward power, Will still had no idea what his own even was.
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

| Will awoke with a start, sitting up even before his eyes had opened. He leaned forward, rubbing at his temples.
It had happened again. Shit. It was only 3 in the morning, but he'd been woken up by something, another weird dream. He got out of bed, dressing quickly. He would've dismissed it and gone back to sleep as he normally did, but this hadn't been the typical stream of consciousness followed by a bizarre conviction, but rather a dream of violence and hate.
Correctly dressed at last, he stepped outside the door and locked it behind him, walking down the stairs to the ground floor of his apartment block. He stepped out into the night - early morning, technically, but dawn wouldn't be for another few hours - and glanced around.
Nothing.
Maybe he had been imagining things, but he'd been so convinced that something terrible was going to happen soon. Maybe he was going mad.
He smiled at his neighbour as she walked past him; she always worked the night shift, so it wasn't unusual for him to see her coming in whenever he was out this early for work. She smiled back and went up the stairs. Will remembered his first dream, that her husband had been cheating on her, and snorted softly. He had been imagining things then, and he probably was now as well.
He waited a minute, thinking that whatever it was might've just not happened yet, before he turned to go back inside. Just then, just as he was about to give up, he felt something. A premonition, you could say. Something like pressure on the inside of his skull, accompanied by a certainty that there was a threat nearby.
But it wasn't coming from outside, it was coming from above.
He took the steps two at a time, wondering all the while if he'd finally cracked and was imagining things, and, after reaching what felt like the right floor and taking a moment to catch his bearings, darting through the open door of the flat at the end of the corridor. The pressure was stronger now, and it increased exponentially as he got closer until it felt more like pain.
He found a situation that he'd seen more than a few times as a detective, though he'd always been too late before.
He tackled the woman with the knife before she could stab the man in the bed, bringing her crashing down to the floor in a clatter and startling both the man and his bed partner awake.
Will had the knife out of the assailant's hands in just a few moments and reached back for the cuffs he always kept on the..... back of his belt. His police uniform belt. That he didn't have anymore.
His moment of surprise at the lack gave his opponent an opportunity, and she slammed her head backwards into his nose, dazing him.
She was shrieking, at him, at her cheating husband, at the woman in the bed. She went for the knife, trying to snatch it off the floor where he'd dropped it when he went for the non-existent cuffs, but he got there first. They struggled for a few seconds, but Will had been trained and she hadn't, so the conclusion was foregone and the weapon went sailing across the room.
She was strong, quick and angry. But she was also outmatched and outnumbered.
After the police had come and taken her away and the whole thing had been dealt with, Will knew that he couldn't ignore it anymore. He was different, like Ash had insisted. Before, he wouldn't have been able to stop this, wouldn't have known until it was already too late.
But he'd known there was danger, even without any sign.
Dominic had phoned him up that morning, asking him to meet at the warehouse where the others had been practising with their powers. Will, still stunned from what had happened, hadn't argued, and now here he was, standing outside waiting for the younger man to show. Dominic hadn't been particularly forthcoming in the phone call about the subject of their meeting, so Will had little to do other than stick his hands in his pockets and try to process the previous events.
This was... huge. Will had thought himself unchanged by the crash, like Alice. But now... What if she had a power as well, had discovered one in the time since he'd seen her? Were they all different now?
What would that mean?
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

| What? Charlie? Will knew she was at least passingly interested in him, but she’d only really ever been a friendly barista to him. Why was it that Ash wouldn’t let him have a single platonic relationship with a woman? Honestly, she was as bad as their mom, except Ash just wanted to tease him over having a girlfriend, rather than for him to have children for her to spoil.
He remembered his coffee as she gestured to it; he’d only half drank it, too focussed on what he’d been saying to bother pausing for a sip. He took a few moments to finish it before passing her the cup, giving himself time to gather his thoughts.
“Honestly Ash, you’re incorrigible. Can’t I be close to a woman without it being sexual? You’re not old enough to be trying to live vicariously through me. I mean, she’s a friend, but this is the only place I’ve ever seen her.”
Ashley recognised his protests. Their mother was forever constructing imaginary potential relationships and they’d both had their fair share of interrogations over their love lives. Strictly, Ashley was under the impression that she’d all but given up on Will now and started to focus all her efforts upon her daughter - but maybe it just felt that way. Still… It never hurt to kickstart a little spark, did it? Charlie hadn’t displayed the same gentle enthusiasm for any other customer, after all.
“OH. Close.” She took both the mugs and danced her way to the counter before Will could defend himself.
“Here you go,” she said cheerfully, waiting for Charlie to draw closer before continuing. “That’s my brother, by the way. He’s real sweet taking his little sister out for coffee, don’t you think?”
Charlie looked confused for a second, then blushed for a second. “Yeah, that’s sweet.” The barista was fairly sure that she knew what the other girl was going for, and decided that it was worth jumping the gun, so she leaned in a little closer, speaking conspiratorially and grinning, though somewhat nervously. “Say, you wouldn’t happen to know if he’s single, would you?”
Ashley tried not to look too surprised at how successful her wingmanning was. Oh wow, Charlie was not interested in being subtle. She could only imagine the terror on Will’s face as he watched the scene unfold.
Wait, she didn’t have to imagine. Ashley spun around quickly, clocked the look on his face and returned it with an innocent smile, before returning her attention to Charlie.
“Well, as a matter of fact I do. But girl, please, put yourself out there. He just needs a little encouragement.” She motioned for him to come over. “Why don’t you ask him yourself?”
That was a yes right? Right? The girl, Ash, Will had called her, was being deliberately vague, but she was certainly implying it. Charlie had been interested in Will for a while, but he was hardly talkative, and she’d never quite managed to sum up the courage to go and ask him out like she wanted to. Still, he was coming over now as his sister beckoned him, and Charlie took a breath before putting on a big smile. “Hey Will, your sister was just telling me all about you. I was wondering…” She trailed off, hesitating at the last moment.
Will, who had been quietly freaking out ever since his sister went up to talk to Charlie, found himself remarkably nervous as to what the blonde barista would say next. “What is it Charlie? You need help with anything?”
Charlie took a deep breath, then proceeded to try and get as many words out in a single breath as possible. It was rather impressive, honestly. “Iwaswonderingifyou’dliketogogetadrinksometime.”
Will took a moment to go over what she’d said, for at first it was almost totally unintelligible. Then, when he finally understood, he blushed, looking at Ash pleadingly. “I… I think I’d quite like that.”
Ashley gave a subtle, approving nod of her head at Will, a smug look on her face. There was an irony in the world’s worst serial dater trying to play cupid but… hey, it was working, right?
A time was set, the evening of the following night, and Will left with a tentative smile on his face. Maybe this time, he’d have a relationship that wouldn’t end in fire. Standing on the curb outside, with Ash, he faced her. “Well Ash, what now?”
“Well,” Ashley smiled, unable to wipe the satisfied smirk from her face, “You enjoy yourself tomorrow. In the meantime, if you suddenly learn to fly, or grow horns or… whatever, please give me a call.” Her face was serious now. “And take care of yourself investigating these super weirdos.”
“You know me sis, I always look after myself.”
When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching — they are your family.

| At times like this, Will was reminded why he loved his sister. Even when she was unsure, she’d still always choose to believe him, rather than doubt him. “I don’t know what my power is. I don’t even know if I have one. And yes, I’ve managed to convince the others to wait for now, rather than revealing what they can do, so that I have time to figure it out. I want to know more, I want to understand, rather than risk giving out inaccurate information, or information that people would be better off not knowing.”
“What I really need is a third opinion, but it’s not like I can just walk up to some random person and ask if they have superpowers.”
Ashley nodded. “Yeah, not exactly subtle. Do you know how many of you guys - those guys - there are? Maybe they collect together somewhere…” She looked around the coffee shop, miming binoculars. “Maybe right under our noses…”
Yeah, she probably shouldn’t quit her day job for PI work.
Will snorted. His sister, enthusiastic as she could be sometimes, was not particularly cut out for his line of work. “If there are any in here Ash, I very much doubt we’d be able to tell. If Harry was telling the truth then they’ve stayed hidden for hundreds of years; they’ll be very, very good at it by now. As to how many of them, I don’t know. Hundreds, no doubt. Maybe even thousands, but Harry certainly didn’t talk like there were very many of them.”
“Well, he’s one of them, can’t you find out where he is? Must be based somewhere around here for him to have caught up with you so quickly. Maybe he meets up with people like him - we could tail him!” Her eyes lit up with a childish excitement. Then, with an effort, she lowered her voice once more. “Though I guess they’d be someone who agrees with him if they hang out together… ugh…”
Ashley pouted. “So what’s your current plan? Stare at the big old board of yours until something reveals itself?”
“It’s not like I’ve got many other options. I have no idea where to even begin looking for Harry, and San Francisco is a big place. He could be anywhere from North Beach to the airport, or even further. Hell, he might be across the bay, or not even in the goddamn state anymore. The doctor managed to vanish just by going through a door, I’ve no way of knowing if he can do the same.”
Taking a long swig of her cappuccino, Ashley gave Will an attempt at a reassuring smile. “Kinda tricky dealing with these magic-powered people, huh. I’m sure something will click into place for you, it always does.” She knew that Will hadn’t exactly breezed through every single case that had come his way, but she did know that he was an excellent detective. This was new territory - super powers! What the hell? - but that didn’t mean he couldn’t adjust to it quickly.
He needed a boost though, she thought. Poor Will. What a bizarre new world to be thrust into.
“I mean come on, you’re almost bound to develop something yourself by the sound of things. Are you sure you haven’t noticed something different? Even just something really small and simple, I don’t know. Anything?” If there was anything that could level the playing field against superhumans, surely it was becoming one. Will was good at picking up details, sure, but there could have been something he dismissed as insignificant just because it didn’t quite fit with his current line of focus. He was so busy paying attention to the people he was investigating that he might not have been paying attention to himself.
“Nothing’s changed for me, so far as I know. I mean, I haven’t been sleeping well, but I’m fairly sure that’s a normal consequence of experiencing mortal injuries. Besides that? Nothing.” Will shrugged, not overly concerned about his apparent lack of an ability. “Maybe I just don’t have the spark. Or maybe I do have something and it’s just so weak that I can’t tell when I’m using it.”
Although… Come to think of it, Harry had seemed surprised at how much he had revealed. And there were those strange dreams he’d been having; the knowledge that he shouldn’t have had but did upon waking.
No, he was imagining things.
Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.

| Most of the staff recognised Will when he came through the door. He was a regular after all, often found sitting in the corner and nursing a mug of coffee, or talking to a particularly nervous client who preferred to be in an open space. Hell, this had been one of his favorite places in the city even while he was still an officer, a place where he could just relax, even if only for a time.
The woman behind the counter smiled brightly as he approached. She’d been working there almost as long as he’d been coming by, and Will was fairly sure she was a little more interested in him that she probably should’ve been. “The usual Will?”
“Thanks Charlie. Hey Ash, you want anything?”
Will wasn’t particularly looking forward to this conversation, so the longer he could distract his sister the better.
Pretending to scrutinise the menu, Ashley propped herself up against the counter. “Decaf cappuccino, please, non-fat… wait, no!” She beamed broadly. “With cream!” After all her time in the gym today, Ashley thought it important to treat herself. Plus she liked giving herself cream moustaches and it was a solid tactic for brightening the mood in case Will was about to discuss something extra super serious.
She turned to him, beam still plastered on her face as Charlie whisked herself off to prepare the drinks. “She knows you! She seems nice.”
Will rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Yeah, I’m a bit of a regular here. She’s been serving me coffee for ages.”
Ash had that gleam in her eyes that meant she was thinking of meddling, so Will quickly tried to change the subject. “How have you been Ash? I forgot to ask before. Any upcoming albums for me to keep an eye out for?”
“Eh, I’m in studio at the moment, trying to come up with something at just the right level of revolutionary that my producers will actually let me release it without it being boring,” Ashley said with a roll of her eyes. “It’s a hard life. Got a few meetings with some big people over the next month or so though, so… watch this space!” She laughed. “Other than that, I’ve been working pretty hard so not too much excitement besides continuing to disappoint our grandbaby-crazy mom, of course.”
“Honestly Ash, you’re going to break her heart at this rate. I mean, I’m not much better, but you’re so horrible to our poor mom that I’m amazed you’re still her baby girl.” Will was always a little disturbed when their mom called Ash ‘her baby girl’, particularly since it always came either before or after a rant about how neither of them were ever going to give her grandchildren and how it was so hard being a mother with such ungrateful children. That didn’t mean he couldn’t use it to tease her though.
Ashley folded her arms. “What, you trying to steal the title from me?”
Will was not the most humorous of people, but even he could see the golden opportunity. “Yes Ash,” he said, folding his arms in a mirror image of the way she had and speaking with obvious sarcasm. “I’m totally trying to steal the title of baby girl from you. I’ve always wanted it, it’s my dream.”
It was pretty lucky that Ashley hadn’t received her drink yet or she would have spat the entire contents all over her poor brother.
“Alright, alright, you goof,” she said slowly, once she’d recovered from her brief spout of hysterical laughter. “It’s okay, we can let dreams be dreams…”
Finally (actually, quite quickly) Ashley received her coffee. She spun in a gentle circle, surveying the shop with a gentle smile. “Shall we take a seat?”
Will smiled at the expression on his sister’s face. It was nice to see her smile, especially since he doubted she’d be doing much of that once he started talking. He thanked Charlie for the quick service - she smiled and batted her eyelashes at him, making Will feel a little uncomfortable; she was much closer to Ash in age than him - and gestured over to his usual table.
They sat down, and Will took a sip of his coffee to give himself a few moments to think about how to start. Then he realised he was being dumb. “So Ash, where do you want me to begin?”
Ashley blinked, surprised. “Um, at the beginning, I suppose. How did you find out about the case? Or these uh… crazy stories and their interesting correlations, as you put it.”
Okay… Okay okay okay. Right, this was going to be difficult. “You remember what I told you about the crash? I… didn’t tell the whole truth. I did wake up afterwards in the hospital without a scratch, that part at least was true. But I shouldn’t have woken up. I should have died. I remember enough to know that."
“There were five other people with me when I woke up. They were all the same, all had injuries that should have killed them and yet didn’t leave a scratch. We were… saved, I suppose, by a woman. A doctor that no one in the hospital had ever met.”
Family is not an important thing. It's everything.

| Twilight phase? What? Those books were some of the worst he'd ever even glanced at, they totally ignored established mythology, portrayed stalking as the prelude to a healthy relationship and had the temerity to inspire such garbage as Fifty Shades of Grey! Why, when Ashley had been going through her 'Twilight phase' it had taken Will months to get through to her how awful the bloody things wer...
Ah.
You know, most of the time Will was so grateful that he had a sister that he could cry. Other times, he wished that he wasn't so close to her. This was the latter.
He'd been so close to Ashley for so long that she'd learned how he ticked, and while he would always love her she had an uncanny ability to tell when something was bothering him, and a far too familiar dedication to finding out what it was. He knew her as well as she knew him, but that didn't help when he was the one trying to hide things from her, even if it had been very useful when she'd been in her rebellious phase and was driving mom spare.
What made it worse was that he didn't even know if knowing what he was doing would be dangerous for her. Harry had tried to reassure him, to convince him that there were no assassins waiting in the wings, but how could Will know for sure?
She was right in front of the board now, her head only a foot from where he had put the notes on his talk with Harry. She only needed to turn her head to the right and she'd see them, and then the cat would well and truly be out of the bag. He should've known even before he started trying that he would never be able to get her to leave it alone.
Ashley didn't take after him in many ways, but she did in some. Obsession was genetic, in the Chase family. Will was just the worst of the current generation.
"Okay Ash, you win. Let's go have a coffee and I'll tell you what I'm working on."
It felt oddly poetic. He'd learned this over a coffee, and now she would too.
Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

| God, it seemed like no matter what he said she'd ask a question that he couldn't answer. To make it even worse, he'd noted down what he'd learned from Harry on the board, as well as quite a lot of stuff on old myths and legends, from werewolves to witches, and he couldn't let Ashley read that. She'd never let it go, and he just knew he'd end up forced to tell her the truth.
But what could he say to dissuade her?
Ashley was as stubborn as a mule when she wanted to be, and Will had never been very good at lying. He despised it. She'd pick up on any falsehood in a second; she'd learned it from him after all, and Will had made it a point to be good at spotting liars. He needed to somehow evade the question, convince her that there was nothing about the case that she'd be interested in.
He was so screwed.
"That's just... something I'm dabbling in. It's.." He trailed off, trying to find a way to explain what he was doing without actually telling her what he was getting involved in. Aha, he had it. "Just looking up a few crazy stories that have been going around lately. There are some interesting correlations between them and some of the old myths; werewolves and vampires and the like."
"I've not had much work lately, so I thought I'd look into this stuff just to keep busy." That wasn't even a lie, technically. After all, just not checking if you'd picked up work was the same as not getting it, right?
Uncertainty is a very good thing: it's the beginning of an investigation, and the investigation should never end.

| Ashley was at least kind enough to allow him to wave away his own problems for the time being, even if the smile on her face indicated that she was merely waiting for a more appropriate opportunity.
Then she asked a rather... awkward... question. She asked how his car was.
It was awkward for two reasons. One, he didn't know himself; he'd been a little distracted since the crash, what with the earth-shattering revelations. Two, considering that he remembered getting skewered by a metal girder, the chances were that it was completely totaled in a way that would single to Ash wide and clear that something fishy was going on, and Will didn't want her involved in this at all if he could help it.
He didn't know how it was going to turn out, and if things went sour he'd feel a lot better if she was as far away as he could get her.
Not that Will would ever tell her that. Ash... tended to react badly, when she thought he was coddling her. At least, when she wasn't encouraging it. He knew that she'd probably take a long time forgiving him if this ever came out, which it almost certainly would if she stayed around.
He found himself in a dilemma, where he wanted desperately to protect her from what might be coming, but was equally aware that doing so could end up having a very negative impact on their relationship.
"Yeah, sorry. I don't think I can give you a lift, I'm fairly sure my car was almost totally wrecked. I haven't heard back from anyone about it yet, so chances are it won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

| Damn. She'd noticed.
Not that she was ever going to miss how awful he looked, but a man could dream dammit.
And now she was guilt tripping him, and he was going to let her do it just like always. Sometimes Will Chase took a look at his life, and wondered where he'd gone so wrong. Then he looked at his family and realised that he'd do it all a thousand times over if it kept them smiling. Ash was so fond of telling him off for obsessing that she'd never noticed the greatest of his fixations, and she never would if he had his way.
Apparently she'd dumped her new boyfriend as well, which was rather tragic, if not unexpected. Will couldn't think of a single relationship of hers lasting more than a couple of months, though a few days had to be a new record.
And of course mom was disappointed, the woman was desperate for grandchildren by this point, and brought it up every time she saw an opportunity. She seemed to have mostly given up on him, thank god, but that left Ash as the main focus of her bizarre and far too persistent match-making attempts.
He would've sympathised wither her, he would've. But considering that he was almost as focused on his sister's love-life as their mom was, he didn't think that he had that right. After all, at least Bethan McKenna-Chase left it at encouraging procreation, rather than investigating each and every boyfriend to the point where she knew them better than their own mothers did, as Will did.
He may have recognised her attempt to make him feel guilty, but that didn't make it any less effective, and Will found himself shifting slightly and fidgeting.
"Sorry Ash, I've just... Well. I've had a hell of a week. First the crash, then this case I've got. There's just no goddamn leads. But anyway, you don't need to worry about that. What's this about your latest boyfriend? You've already dumped him? Jesus Ash, you're gonna drive mom nuts at this rate. All these chances for her to get grandchildren that you just throw away so quickly. At least my relationships tend to last a bit longer, and have longer in between." His tone was humorous, but then he turned serious.
"And I am okay, don't worry. The doctors cleared me just fine. Hell, I haven't got a scratch."
Will very carefully did not remember the impact of the steel bar in his gut, or the cold. It wasn't like he was even really lying to her after all. The doctor had fixed them up, and left no signs of any of their injuries. That meant they didn't count, right?
Understanding is a three edged sword. Your side, their side, and the truth.

| It had only been a day or so since they met up to talk about what to do next, and so far as Will knew the others were currently off learning more about their abilities. He, on the other hand, had been trying to track down a little more information; he hadn't been successful.
They had been hiding for hundreds of years, the doctor and her kin, and they were good at it - most of the things he had found appeared to be mere hoaxes to him, fake werewolf and UFO sightings and the like, even now that he knew more. It probably didn't help that he hadn't been able to sleep properly since the crash, going to bed tired and waking up only slightly less so. and with a raging headache to boot.
He was standing in his office and staring at the wall, seeing the utter lack of information he had managed to gather and feeling rather sorry for himself when someone hammered on the door and shouted for him. Ashley.
Shit.
He'd totally forgotten about the meeting they were supposed to have on the day of the crash, he'd been so wrapped up in the new information that Harry had given him. Dammit, he had done it again; he'd been so busy obsessing that he'd forgotten what mattered.
And now she was going to start asking him what was wrong; Will was far too self-aware to not realise that he looked awful - there were dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep, and he hadn't shaved since the morning of the crash. He'd been wearing contact lenses since he'd first reached the office with Persephone after leaving the hospital - only taking them off to sleep - because his spare pair of glasses were still at his home, and his eyes were starting to ache.
Could he tell her the truth? The whole truth, everything he'd learned. No. At least, not yet. He didn't know enough himself, and he still wasn't sure whether he could trust Harry's word that they were not in danger from his organisation if they dared to reveal any of the information that he'd learned.
Will shook himself and walked to the door. Maybe he'd be lucky and she wouldn't notice how bad he looked. He opened the door.
"Hey Ash, it's good to see you too."
I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.

| Alice's suggestion certainly made much more sense than many of the others being thrown around; they did need to know more about what the others were capable of, even if both of them lacked powers of their own.
Well, she had said she lacked powers, and he was fairly sure that he didn't have any either. But that strange shift sensation when he had been speaking to Harry, and the odd thoughts he'd woken up with... No, he was being silly. Dominic, Claire, Mason and Persephone had all known of their abilities seemingly as soon as they developed them, surely he would've known by now if he also had a power.
But Will knew that he'd allowed himself to become distracted from what was truly important. They still had no idea why the doctor wanted to reveal everything, and since she apparently hadn't gotten in contact with any of the others he had no idea how to even begin finding her. He had only found her in the first place because she revealed herself to him, and from the way she had vanished he doubted she'd be leaving any tracks that he could recognise.
She was an enigma, and Will Chase was a man who enjoyed puzzles only so long as he was actively going about solving them; he couldn't stand being forced to just sit around and wait for something to happen - it was one of the reasons he hadn't done so well on stake-outs when he was still in the force.
He needed to be doing something, to be actively learning, or he would start going insane. But a new discussion had started around Alice's suggestion, and he should probably respond.
If he couldn't track her down on his own, he'd need something to do while he waited for a new lead.
"You guys do need to practise with whatever abilities you've developed. After all, we don't want anything going wrong with them, better to try and find their limits now, so that when push comes to shove you know exactly what you can do and how far you can go."
"I know a couple of places where you could practise in relative privacy if you want to get started, though obviously I can't guarantee that they'll all still be empty; I haven't checked quite a few of them in months."
The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

| Frozen in the headlights of progress? Strange, how much more confident and cutting Persephone was when she had people 'on her side', as it were.
It also appeared that whatever good will she'd had for him had disappeared as quickly as dew in the morning sun. He wasn't sure why. He wasn't arguing his position out of fear, or selfishness or jealousy or anything like that. He knew that Dominic had realised that, the man was far more observant that he had appeared at first.
The man's words had been passionate and convincing, filled with a surety and charisma that was rare. He would go far, probably had already.
But Will still wasn't convinced. He wanted to be. Oh god, he wanted to be. But he couldn't believe in the world that Alice and Dominic saw. He didn't know what lives they had led, but he had seen some pretty horrible things in his forty years. Everything from theft to murder to paedophilia, and it was difficult to believe in the goodness of humanity when you'd seen even a small glimpse of its darkness.
"I question your choice of words Persephone. It is not cowardice to be cautious, or to be reluctant to do something that you know could cause irreparable harm to others. I am not 'frozen in the headlights of progress', I am questioning whether this would be progress at all."
He turned to Dominic. "You say they will still have a choice as to whether or not to reveal themselves, but will they really Dominic? You're smart enough to know what people are like. If you come forward, they will start looking for the strange, for the abnormal; for the super. They will search for a way to gain powers of their own. People are selfish like that."
"They will look for people with powers, and they will find them. All it would take is one mistake, one moment of poor judgement, and this whole thing would be blown open."
"But I can't make this decision for you. Nor do I want to. As you said, you have spent your whole life making your own choices, and damn anyone who tries to make them for you. Besides, I'm finding it rather difficult to disagree."
"I just wanted to make sure that you knew, that all of you knew, that this is not a choice to be made lightly. This is not something to be decided quickly, without serious thought to the potential consequences."
Whatever you do in life, surround yourself with smart people who'll argue with you.

| Mason and Alice were so hopeful, so sure that everything would be fine. Will hadn't experienced that in a long time. He was too cynical.
Claire, on the other hand, appeared to have to come to the same realisation that Will himself had reached. As nice as it was to imagine people accepting them, rejoicing in the existence of people with powers, he found himself unable to believe it possible. Even with his hatred of lying, he could see why Harry would consider this a secret worth keeping.
"I said before that I don't know whether this secret should be kept, and I still don't. I don't know if concealing the truth from the world in this matter can be anything other than a travesty. But that's the problem, I - we - don't know."
"These abilities, you've not even had them a day. I only found out this much last night. How can we possibly be qualified to make such a decision? What gives us the right to make that choice for all the many others who are even now hiding their abilities from the world? People may dream of heroes, but who will be the hero for those poor people who will be dragged into the light against their will?"
"You speak of overcoming fear Mason, and you think people will look upon them with wonder Alice. I hope that, should you decide to go public, you are right, and people welcome this. But I doubt it."
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.

| Dominic had a rare force of personality, and Will almost found himself nodding along with the man's words. He shook himself, irritated that he had allowed himself to be swept along.
"I haven't noticed anything different, but that's not what I wanted to say. We can't go public, not yet. Maybe not ever."
Will took advantage of the moment of silence that followed his words to continue, talking before anyone could respond, whether to agree with him or to refute what he was saying.
"Those new powers you're demonstrating aren't the first of their kind. Not by a long shot. I found the doctor. I spoke to her. And, after she vanished simply by stepping through a doorway, I spoke to the men who are hunting her."
Dominic had charisma in spades, but there was a special kind of gravitas in what Will was staying, the conviction in his tone. None of the others spoke as he took a breath.
"One of them told me the truth. People with powers, super-humans or meta-humans or magical beings or whatever the hell you want to call them, they've been around for a while. He said that they went into hiding a long time ago, that the last time they tried to reveal themselves they were hunted, and those caught were burned. That has to mean the Witch Hunts, so they've been around for hundreds of years at least, maybe as long as there have been humans on Earth."
"He said that all our tales of werewolves and aliens and ghosts are based on people who lost control of their abilities."
"He told me that the doctor wants to reveal them to the world. That is probably why she saved us. But it sounds like she's in the minority, that many of them would prefer to hide."
He spoke directly to Dominic now, where before he had been addressing the whole room. "I can't stop you from publicising what you can do. I don't even know if I should try. But if you want to do that, then you need to know that it is not just going to be some kind of publicity boost. This will not be painless, it may not end well, it may tear this world apart."
"People can do terrifying things, when they're afraid. And what is more frightening, than change?"
You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.
