Every legend you have heard, every myth, every superstition, every impossible event. All of them are true. Metahumans have lived amongst and alongside humanity since before history began. They were powerful, and power inspires fear. Fear inspires hatred, and hatred inspires violence. Metahumans went underground during the witch burnings. For the last three centuries the Families, as they came to call themselves, have endeavoured to keep the existence of metahumans a secret. The Event changed all of that.
Known as Metahumans in the scientific community, people with superhuman abilities are not a modern phenomenon, although public knowledge of them has only spread recently. Once with a total population of only a few thousand, the numbers of metahumans has exploded, now with conservative estimates placing them at fifteen million, mostly concentrated in America and Eastern Asia.
Of these limited numbers, the vast majority possess abilities that have little effect on their lives, minor abilities such as the power to generate bubbles at will, or levitate a few inches for example. Of the total population of metahumans, perhaps ten percent possesses what could be termed significant powers.
The tiniest fraction of that ten percent possess abilities far beyond even that, capable of living forever, or reshaping matter on a whim.
Most metahumans will first manifest their abilities sometime during puberty, with all of the complications that comes with. This means that girls tend to manifest their powers earlier than boys, though not always, and this is no indication of the effectiveness of the ability.
Particularly potent metahumans can manifest at any age, including early childhood, though it is so rare as to be thought almost a myth even by most members of the Families. In truth any level of ability can manifest at any age, though it is uncommon in the extreme.
Only one individual was able to stimulate the metahuman gene, and they are now long dead. Currently there is no way for powers to be artificially induced via serums, machines or abilities. Some technology can replicate the effects of some powers, but it does not and cannot bestow the abilities upon the wearer.

It is impossible to truly categorise the myriad powers demonstrated by metahumans. With the exception of inherited abilities, and rarely even then, no two metahuman powers are ever truly the same. This can range from simple slight differences in abilities to entirely different power sets that produce the same result. There are some rough categories already emerging in common parlance and in online communities, though any true scientific categorisation is virtually impossible. Many of these terms have moved rapidly into public use, though still have clear links to their origins. Most characters will match more than one definition. Pick the definition that most closely describes your character's power and fill it out in your mini profile. - Auxiliary:
Has enhanced natural body functions (muscle response, senses, intelligence). - Blaster:
Has longer range capable offensive powers (lasers, fireballs, ice walls, etc). - Brick:
Has enhanced strength or durability through external means (rock-covered skin, shockwave strikes). - Gadget:
Can manipulate or alter technological or digital devices. - Ghost:
Can be unaffected or undetected by other forces (power negation, invisibility, mental blind spot). - Gleam:
Can manipulate or utilize other beings or intangible assets (telepathy, psionics). - Shifter:
Can manipulate or alter physical traits of themselves (regeneration, physical appearance, animal form). - Striker:
Has a power that is melee-ranged or touch-based (claws/fangs, absorption). - Traveler:
Has enhanced mobility (flight, teleportation, super speed). - Wildcard:
Can manipulate or utilize powers in some capacity (mimic, buffs/nerfs).
