'a' is for amity Having been swaying towards the idea of alcoholic drinks herself, Ashley was pleased with Alice’s suggestion of drinks. She’d recognised a few of the guys on the checkouts and so they knew they wouldn’t have any trouble with ID. Alice and Ashley were pretty regular customers and the staff here either didn’t know or didn’t care that only one of them was 21. At this point, Alice could probably buy drink herself, even though Ashley always liked to do so as a precautionary measure.
She started for the alcohol section when she suddenly heard her name from a voice that was oddly familiar, and yet she couldn’t quite place it… Ashley turned slowly, just in case they were shouting for a different Ashley, and immediately spotted the bright red jacket and lopsided grin.
Alice prodded her as Ari came up to them and Ashley nodded before bursting into a huge, welcoming smile. “Hi, Ari! Long time no see! This is my roomie, Alice. Alice, this is the illusionist I was telling you about.”
She took a moment to survey the food Ari had obtained for herself, an approving grin settling into her features. She could only assume that Ari was here to buy dinner-for-one – and she was more than welcome to join the two of them if she fancied a less lonely evening. Still, Ashley decided against extending an invitation just in case it scared her off. She’d already kind of invited her earlier anyway.
“We’re buying supplies for Alice to work her chef magic on,” Ashley explained, gesturing to the basket which seemed rather overloaded with chocolate. “And now we’re on the hunt for some drinks to go with! You got any recommendations?” They started making their way down the aisle as they spoke, Ashley still reeling with the exciting coincidence of it all.

"Long time no see indeed," Ari played along with the exaggeration; they had just met a few hours ago, after all. It honestly didn't occur to Ari that she would meet Ashley again, and at such a short time frame as well. Adding in the slightly underrated non-fame of Hal's Mart, it all seemed to slide away from coincidence and closer to something like fate. "And hi, Alice! The name's Ari. Ari Chandler. It's nice to meet you!"
She offered out a hand to shake, grin still up her face. "Awesome hair, by the way," she added in a whisper, nodding at Alice's blue-dyed hair. "I have to say, I didn't really expect to bump into you today, again" she admitted, looking over at the foodstuffs the two girls were carrying. "You guys frequent Hal's?"
It seemed like a useless question--Ari hadn't ever seen Ashley and Alice in the Mart before, but somehow she was curious as to why they were in Hal's considering it was a local area rather than something one could access in the busier parts of the city. Truth be told, she had expected Ashley (and Alice by extension) to be the type to live in that kind of area.
Did they live nearby, then?
Oh bloody--had they been neighbors all this time?
Before many more questions could bombard her head, Ari reminded herself that a conversation was ongoing and she had to talk. She probably looked like she wanted to ask questions but didn't want to, and Ari could feel her eyebrows trying to escape her forehead before she quickly lowered them down. "Chef magic? You guys're pretty lucky!" she remarked, laughing lightly, "I can't cook, so it's all potstickers and pizza for me. What's it Caesar said again? I cook, I burn, I hunger?"
Of course, it wasn't what Caesar actually said, but the parody had taken a place in Ari's mind as an accurate description of her eating ventures. "And drinks? What definition of drinks do you guys have in mind, exactly?" she asked curiously with a chuckle, tagging along as the two began walking down the aisle.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + @blackbirdfly | Smiling as she was introduced, Alice nodded at Ari. "Nice to meet you too, although I've already heard so much about you in the last five minutes. You guys have just met and she's already raving about you. I'm jealous."
She laughed, making it clear that her comments were a joke, and not meant in any sort of serious tone. The girl seemed as genuine as Ashley had made her out to be, Alice was glad that Ashley had no problem with metahumans. Often even the hint that someone might have abilities was enough to change people's attitudes towards them. Alice had been fortunate enough that it had not happened to her, but as she had begun working at the diner she worked in now, someone had been in the process of leaving. Not because they had been fired, but because they had grown tired of the treatment that had followed the appearance of their abilities, minor though they had been. Alice couldn't blame them, and despite being proud of her abilities, she was afraid of being discovered for reasons other than it would reveal her identity as Paladin.
It was odd that they had run into the girl here, but Hal's Mart was a central shopping location for pretty much anyone in the neighbourhood. If Ari was from around here then it made sense that she would shop here as well. "Pretty often yeah, it's easier to carry stuff across the road than to get a taxi to someplace bigger. We usually just buy food and ingredients though so it's perfect."
She shook her head, "Come on, everyone can cook, except Ashley, I won't let her near my kitchen."
She ducked away in case the other girl decided to take vengeance, "Fun drinks. Girls night in tonight, and we like never get time for those anymore so we're going to have to make the most of it while we can."

'a' is for amity Ashley shoved gently at Alice. “Stoooop, you’re making me sound like a crazy fan girl.” She paused, locked eyes suddenly with Ari, and winked. “Which, of course, I totally am. That red jacket owns my heart.” Never one to exaggerate. Ashley, dramatic? Never!
“It’s crazy that we just happened to run into each other so soon,” she agreed. Ashley let Alice explain that yes, of course they were frequent patrons of Hal’s Mart. Alice did sometimes have more specialist shops that she liked to go to for certain ingredients but, when it came to the basics like chocolate and alcohol, Hal’s more than satisfied.
“Don’t tell me you come here all the time too? Our building’s literally just over there-” Ashley gestured vaguely in the direction of their flat. “-so this is our go-to for girls’ night fuel.”
Ashley cracked up at Ari’s ‘I cook, I burn, I hunger’ quip. She emphasised greatly with Ari’s kitchen struggles, although she took offence at Alice’s insinuation that Ashley was forbidden from approaching a hot stove. Alice ducked away, with good reason, but Ashley decided a simple glare would suffice. “Hey, I’m learning,” she protested sulkily. “I have like… at least two dishes that I can make consistently without burning the food, myself or the equipment. I consider that progress!”
She smiled happily as Ari joined them in their meander towards the alcohol section. “Yeah, fun drinks! We usually go for anything bubbly but I’m open to suggestions. Although maybe nothing too strong, else I’ll like… die.”
Ashley continued to be as lowkey and undramatic as ever.
They stood before Hal’s selection of fun drinks, Ashley stroking her chin as though deep in thought. “Hmm… whatcha think Ari?”

The resulting conversations elicited a laugh from the illusionist, quite enjoying the company already. Frankly, although she did have a fair share of friends, Ari was usually seen in public by herself. "Hey, aren't I supposed to be the fangirl?" she spoke in mock-protest, snapping her fingers to jokingly conjure a "fangirl" badge on her chest.
"Whoa, dude," she managed to muster after following the direction Ashley pointed at. "At first I thought we were just the five-blocks-away kind of neighbors, considering you hang here at Hal's Mart too. But now," she looked back at the direction of Ashley's flat, double-checking. "Oh wow, how come I've never seen you guys before? I think my apartment's just right across from yours!"
Huh. Now coincidence felt like an understatement.
Thankfully, Ari was quick to recover from the revelation--at this point she was getting used to it. To Alice's encouraging remark, the illusionist grinned impishly. "I guess that's about right, except if everyone can cook, then that would make the fast food chains feel left out," she held up the pack she bought to her face, tone mischievous, "I can feel their pouts coming,"
Yup, that seemed about right for an excuse.
"Anyways, fun drinks, huh?" she pondered the shelves for a moment, another smile creeping up her face. "I rarely do girl's nights, or any nights, for that matter, but as an ex-part-time-bartender I'm no stranger to drinks. If I were you, I'd say..."
Thankfully the drink she reached out for was low enough to grab--she'd always remembered the Mart's shelves as being painstakingly high, or at least it was to her. Maybe it was to ward off thieves--the most important and expensive stuffs were up top, after all. "This," she handed out the bottle for both to see, "Cheap, with a moderate punch to it. It's pretty underrated, to be honest."

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + @blackbirdfly | "Oh my god, it's such a small world."
Alice laughed at the thought that they had lived across the street from the illusionist without ever running into her. Especially if she was out and performing on the streets. Still, it wasn't as if Paladin had much time to stop and take in a show when she was working. Maybe they had glimpsed each other through windows before, just never paying enough attention to recognise each other.
Alice shrugged, "I guess you're right, but we still order pizza. There's just something about those thick, cheesy things that I can't get enough of. So at least one fast food chain would stay in business."
Alice eyed the bottle, she recognised it, but only in the way that you recognised things that you saw in the background on TV shows. She'd never tried it, not least because legally she couldn't purchase alcohol. Still, it looked like it would be nice, so Alice nodded her approval of the drink.
"I'm always up for trying something new. Maybe it'll become a favourite!"
She glanced at the snacks that were currently piled eye in her basket. They had a lot of food, more than enough for just two of them, and probably enough for three. Besides, it wasn't like Ari hadn't just contributed a little by picking out booze for them.
"I can't believe that you don't do girl's nights though. You'll just have to join ours. I'm sure Ashley would be OK with that, and I definitely think it'd be cool. Just don't make me trip out."
She looked to Ashley for agreement.

'a' is for amity “Mutual fangirlism,” Ashley insisted with a grin, applying her own make-believe badge.
She wondered if Ari was also a fan of Paladin. It was pretty likely – Paladin was the celebrity superhero, especially in San Francisco. Unless Ari was a secret super-villain, she probably knew of Paladin as the brave beacon of hope that everyone else did. However, Alice was not Paladin right now. Alice was Alice and so there wasn’t about to be a full-blown triangle of fan-girling, no matter how closely Alice’s hair matched that of her alter-ego.
“It really is such a small world! Does your apartment face the street too? We’d totally be able to wave at each other,” she giggled, a little over-enthusiastic in her discovery that Ari lived so close to them. Ashley just really, inexplicably enjoyed the idea of being able to spot a friendly face from her own window.
Ashley chuckled. “So noble of you to keep the fast food chains afloat, Ari. Like Alice says, we try our best to help out the local economy. Takeout pizza is just the best pizza, plus we all have our lazy days.” Her stomach rumbled gently, a low, gurgling reminder of the feast that they were about to consume.
“Ex-bartender huh? I can definitely trust your judgement. Should we buy some soda to go with this?”
As Ashley turned to look for something that would mix with Ari’s selection, she heard Alice invite her to the girls’ night. Ashley had already asked her earlier so at least Ari would definitely be feeling wanted by the pair. She turned with a smile to signal her agreement.
“For sure! Why not? You could at least just come over for a little to sample some of the snacks Alice is going to cook up for us. It’s not like you have far to go home,” she added with a shrug, grinning with amusement. She liked Ari and it would be fun for the three of them to sit around the apartment enjoying tasty snacks and drinking exciting drinks for a little – it gave Ashley the chance to get to know Ari outside of the more business-like offer to feature in performances, and Ashley was all about making friends.

"Mutual fangirlism, indeed," to this, Ari completed the image by summoning the illusion of badges on all three of them. It was golden and had a stylized letter 'A' engraved on each, referencing to the first letters of the girls' names. "They say A is for amity, amen?"
Grinning from side to side, Ari nodded in agreement to Ashley's remark. It truly was a small world, and the illusionist always had the feeling that it was going to become even smaller. There had been a time when Ari felt compelled to make a sort of "connection tree", see how each person was connected to the other. However, that had been when she was ten years old and it was terribly unrealistic to the point that Ari cringed just thinking aboit it. "I know, right?" she answered, looking back at the direction Ashley had pointed, still a bit in disbelief. "I'm pretty sure we can wave at each other from our windows, yeah! That's why I'm still really surprised that I've never seen you guys before...I've been there for a good three years now--did you guys just recenty move in or are you just inherently sneaky?"
It seemed they were on similar pages when it came to fast-food nobility, to which Ari nodded proudly. She was definitely liking the company of the two already. "Pizza world domination is underway, then!"
As always, way to keep the eccentricity, Ari.
"You know, that's the second time I've been asked to a night out today," Ari remarked, and when Ashley added in with an agreement, the illusionist chuckled. "Okay, thrice. Or maybe twice squared, considering two are from the same person? I dunno, I hate Math."
She really, really did.
"But, I think fate's telling me to say yes, just as it's made me bump into you again--and even more so since it's revealed that we're neighbors," she remarked, a lopsided grin on her face. "So, what do you guys say to a new member joining the party? I'll contribute to ordering pizza, and de-rusting my bartender skills if you'd want!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + @blackbirdfly | "Amen!"
Alice chimed in with agreement, then paused, "Wait, isn't 'Amity' the place in that horror movie? Are you gonna chop us up with an axe?"
She put on an expression of mock terror. She wasn't actually sure what the word 'amity' meant, but she was pretty confident that it didn't mean Ari was secretly a mad axe killer. She relaxed, giggling, and adjusted the basket in her grip to ensure nothing spilled out of it. She adjusted a few of the packets slightly, they were piled a little precariously.
She nodded in earnest agreement, "Math sucks, I'm so glad I don't have to do it now I'm finished with High School."
She shrugged, "I don't know if I believe in fate, but I'm telling you to say yes. Especially if you've already bumped into Ashley once today. There's definitely something going on. Besides, if you don't get out with friends much we can be your friends who sit and veg on the couch instead of going out and socialising."
She shook the basket in her hands, catching a packet once again as it made it's bids for freedom. "We can order pizza, but I can't guarantee you'll actually be able to eat any of it by the time I've finished cooking. I've got enough to make plenty for two and then some, I usually make extra to eat over a few days anyway. I'd rather someone ate it fresh though."
She glanced at the bottle that Ari had selected for them. "You're definitely conscripted as bartender though, I can pair wines and some beers with food, but other than that I really know nothing about drinks. We could do with someone of your expertise."
Alice started heading slowly towards the register, "Are you gonna come over later then or..?"

'a' is for amity Ashley looked down at the badges Ari had just conjured for them out of thin air, squealing delightedly. “They are so cute!” she exclaimed, prodding at it for a second before her finger just passed straight through and she realised – obviously – they were just an illusion. “You’re right, Ash, Alice and Ari sound a super amicable trio. Amen!”
She widened her eyes at Alice’s concerns. “I have no clue which movie you’re talking about,” she said slowly, “But quit being a dork, you!” Ashley prompted jabbed Alice in the side with her finger – a far cry from an axe, sure, but still hard enough to make her roommate jump for ruining the cute moment.
How long ago did they move in together? It felt like a week and an eternity all at once. “Gosh, yah no we only moved in pretty recently compared to you. We are also very sneaky,” she added, doing her best creep walk as they headed down the aisles of the shop. “You know I gotta avoid the paparazzi,” she added in a hushed voice. It was only partly a joke.
She clapped her hands. “Of course you can join the party! Especially with your bartender skills – the cocktails I try to make always end up a bit…” she pulled a face, “ Weird.”
“Alice is going to cook us up a bunch of delicious treats,” Ashley added, gesturing to the basket, “But pizza is totally always an option too in our house. Oh… and Disney songs usually come on at some point in the night so, like, I hope you know all the words. Or you could make some little illusions to go with, how cute would that be?”
Ashley was perhaps over-excited at the prospect, but who could blame her when Ari’s power was so fun?

"I'm not sure if you're talking about Amityville or The Shining." Ari remarked, terrifying memories of creepy toy monkeys resurfacing back in her head. She wasn't a big fan of horror movies, not really, especially not after a friend forced her to binge watch the classically terrifying ones. A grin spread across her face, however, at the mention of the word 'dork'. "Don't listen to her, Alice. Dorkiness is a quality that needs to be cultivated." she faux-whispered, nodding firmly and seriously afterwards. No one dare try to stop dorks from spreading...
"Ninja neighbors...who knew?" Ashley's version of a creep walk elicited a laugh from the illusionist, thinking it very silly and completely something she didn't expect Ashley to do. "Although, I'm not sure walking like that will help avoid the paparazzi. They'd most likely see you instead, especially if you're trying to sneak around like James Bond."
The laugh that followed signified that Ari was just teasing--Ashley had just done an excellent creep walk to the point that Ari could almost hear the Mission Impossible theme song. Was that even possible just by moving like a ninja? Ari didn't know.
"I can help with that!" Ari answered to Ashley's remark about cocktails. "I think it's all in good balance--if Alice is good with food, then you'll have to be good in drinks! That's a super tandem right there."
Ari was, of course, gonna be the one to subtly taste their products. All in good balance, indeed.
And then came the main question, to which Ari responded first with a wide, lopsided smile. "Definitely!" came the answer, and as Ashley continued to talk about pointers for the night-out, Ari's smile grew even wider. "Dude, Disney influences my street performances more than it should. My first illusion-involved one actually had Mickey Mouse in it..." she remarked, the enthusiasm loud and clear in her voice. "I'll be happy to provide y'all a show, this'll be fun!"
And with that, the conversation continued on until the three of them were finally out of Hal's Mart and heading the route towards their apartments. Ari had guessed right--they were just across from each other and it was wholly possible to wave at them from their window. A few minutes and some room directions later, the illusionist bid a temporary goodbye to her new friends before heading inside her apartment. It was going to be a good few minutes of chore-making before she could come over, but even then there was always the window as a way of communication between them.
This'll be fun.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + @blackbirdfly | "Pffffft, they're both such great movies I couldn't choose between them."
Alice acted as though she'd been stabbed rather than prodded, "Hey! I'm with Ari, dorks rule, cheerleaders suck."
She stuck her tongue out at Ashley as if she was the cheerleader in question. Then it was back to the fact that they had been secret neighbours, perhaps not for that long, but definitely long enough that they should have at least seen each other through their windows and developed a music video friendship where they only communicated through written signs. Alice made a mental note to get some whiteboards so they could do just that through their windows.
Her eyes popped wide open at the thought that Ari had brought Mickey Mouse to life in her street performances. "That is sooo cool, but there' no way you're bringing that creepy guy to life in my kitchen. Someone like Rapunzel will do. Mickey's just too…"
She shuddered theatrically, then grinned, "You know what I mean. But yes! I am expecting a proper show from you in payment for my nibbles. I don't cook for free!"
Alice made sure to wave through the window when she got home, before carrying the paper bags of groceries through into the kitchen and ushering Ashley out of it. Fortunately her roommate knew to step out of the way when Alice was about to get down to business. Although she would still sit at the breakfast bar and pick at the ingredients Alice had laid out there, no matter how many knives she threatened to throw.
It wasn't long before she was nearly ready, and asked her roommate "So do you think she'll be the on-time type? Or fashionably late?"

'a' is for amity Ari wasn’t coming straight over to their apartment so Ashley was quick to take advantage of the opportunity to finally change out of her gym clothes and into something more comfortable. Not quite pyjamas – it wasn’t that low key of an evening – but a nice baggy jumper that managed to hang in such a way that it maintained a sense of style without demanding any discomfort. Ashley wasn’t San Francisco’s number one fashionista, but she did like to look good.
She did don her fluffy slippers, however. Those babies were glued to her feet once she was home and no amount of guest entertaining could change that.
Kicking her legs idly while Alice busied herself in the kitchen, Ashley glanced over every now and then through the window to see if she could spot their new acquaintance through one of the windows opposite. She was mostly looking out for a flash of that fabulous red jacket – she wasn’t sure her eyes could spot crooked smiles from here, even if it turned out that Ari did live startlingly close to them after all.
Alice’s words pulled her eyes away from the window. “That looks good,” she said offhandedly, gesturing to the array of food that Alice had started to produce. “And you know, I’m not too sure. I don’t know if street performers operate to schedules.”
She thought she caught a glimpse of a red jacket suddenly, and instantly waved wildly with both hands. “Come on over!!” she yelled futilely at the window, as though the girl had super hearing. Hopefully she’d get the gist, at least. “I think she’s on her way, I’m going to set up her bar area so she can teach me how to actually mix a drink,” she declared.
Alice was far more interested in the food in their kitchen than the drink, though she was pretty knowledgeable about classy, culinary things like wine, so Ashley figured it would be safe for her to enter the kitchen so long as she stuck to the drink side of things. She gathered some glasses, various bottles including the alcohol they’d bought from the shop with Ari, and began arranging it all on the breakfast bar.
“Oh Alice,” she mused dreamily, “I hope she can do bar tricks!”
The illusions were of course awesome, but surely the ex-bartending street performer would have something more physical up her sleeve as well. It was shaping up to be an entertaining night.

Talk about good timing--Ari had just finished preparing for the night out when she spotted a hysterical pair of hands waving on one of the neighboring apartment's windows. It was Ashley, no doubt, and the illusionist's guess was further confirmed the moment she approached her window to get a closer look. Ari waved back as a response but also to confirm that yes, this was her room's window and they could probably communicate with each other using the right tools. For now, however, they'd have to resort to handwaves and gestures.
"HI TO YOU TOO!" she screamed despite not really knowing what the other girl was saying. Ashley was obviously yelling, but it was inaudible and logic declared that since Ari couldn't hear what Ashley was saying, then Ashley couldn't obviously hear what Ari had replied. However, the illusionist had answered anyways, and the waving hands were up to easy interpretation. Interpretation that sent Ari immediately out of the door. She was excited--that much could be seen on her lopsided grin as she walked down her apartment's stairs and closer to destination. Checking the lobby clock, she figured that she'd probably get there in time, or at least as close as 'in time' could be. Maybe there was a plus or minus one? There was always something like that in Ari's experience.
Eh, her impromptu rehearsed entranced was still happening, late or not. Although it would probably be more balanced if she'd done it as compensation for being late. But still! Some performances were better without a reason for doing so.
She was practically skipping the stairs when she finally entered the neighboring apartment, her sling-bag bouncing with every step she took. Ari was careful not to make it move too much, however, because she'd brought some possibly-needed items for the night-out and she wouldn't want to make a mess of it the moment she opened her bag. Quietly muttering what she remembered to be Ashley and Alice's room number, Ari made her way through the corridor and stopped in front of a certain door, fist raised up to knock.
And knock she did.
When the door opened, Ari whipped up her signature grin as she took off her top hat and gave a graceful bow, letting a flurry of colorful bubbles fly out of her headwear. She'd decided to make it as close to alcoholic fizzes as possible, in line with the event of the day. "Heeeya, am I late?" she asked afterwards, genuinely wondering if she was late, before letting a small chuckle escape her mouth. "I saw you waving at the window and decided that was my cue to skadoo. Though, that made me realize we couldn't communicate vocally, so that has to be remedied!"

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? + @blackbirdfly | Alice winced, albeit with a grin, as Ashley yelled at the window. Instead of admonishing her friend however, she added her own wave to the attempt to attract Ari's attention. It seemed to work, and once Ashley and Ari were 'communicating' through two windows and across a busy street, she went back to her preparations. Her hands moved confidently and without hesitation over the counter surface, chopping vegetables with the kind of skill normally associated with cartoons as opposed to nineteen-year-old girls. It helped that she could limit any potential damage to herself by simply absorbing the kinetic energy of the blade should she slip. Not that she did, she might not work full time as a chef, but it was a rare night when she wasn't cooking, although the more advanced dishes tended to be treats now, when she hadn't had a particularly long and stressful day.
She'd just turned up the heat on the hob in the kitchen when a knock sounded at the door. Tossing some things into a frying pan she glanced over towards Ashley, a mock puzzled expression on her face. "Hmmm, I wonder who that could be, maybe you should go check it out."
Hearing Ari's words from the doorway, Alice leaned back, still holding the frying pan, to glance in that direction, seeing just a hint of the colored bubbles rising. She called out, "Hey hey! No fair, I can't come out to see what you're doing in the hall. Come in here if you're going to be making pretty things, I want to see them too!"
She returned to her cooking, although everything she'd decided to make was relatively simple, there was enough that she wasn't quite done yet.
