Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice jumped as Mason’s voice suddenly emerged from thin air. She stared at the blankets that he had been sleeping on, or rather, the space just above them where he should have been if he had sat up. The voice continued blissfully unaware of its origins in empty air. She stared confusedly around the room again, as though Mason would suddenly spring out from behind the closet and reveal his part-time job as a ventriloquist.
The simple bedroom resolutely failed to reassure her. “Mason, are you hiding?”
Mason’s voice was most definitely coming from the air before them, and not from anywhere else. That was only further confirmed by the loud rumbling of what Alice could only assume was his stomach. She took a step forward with her hand out like a blind man searching for the wall, trying vainly to spot the older man.
“Ummm… I definitely think one of us developed magic powers overnight, but it wasn’t me…”
She realised that Mason wasn’t aware of what was going on. Or at least she guessed so; it was hard to judge someone’s expression when that expression was apparently bending light. She glanced around the bedroom, and not seeing what she was looking for, turned to Claire.
“Have you got a mirror?”

"There's no one there." Claire was still waking up, rubbing her eyes and taking deep breaths to stretch out muscles here and there. "He's sleeping on the floor.. might be under all those blankets," she imagined he'd be hiding under all of them in a large pile like some boysh 12-year-old for some reason. It was cute.
"Morning ladies!" The abruptness of it had her lifting her head in the same direction Alice had - right where Mason should have been had he just stood up. Claire looked to Alice, then to the empty space in the room, and let out a hushed, unbelieving, "You can't be serious..." Oh boy... Well, at least of all the men to gain invisibility - which came with all sorts of stereotypical situations - it was a man that seemed pretty darn harmless. Claire just dropped her head into one of her hands and shook it with an ironic smirk at having already accepted the fact.
"No more magic powers developed overnight, then?"
"Ummm… I definitely think one of us developed magic powers overnight, but it wasn’t me… Have you got a mirror?"
Claire looked up and pointed haphazardly towards the short hallway where the bathroom was located. "Yeah. I'm already thinking up all of the pranks he's going to pull.." she huffed through her nose with the smirk and stood from her bed, stretching her arms above her head. Oh, Mason.. Yikes. This was going to be something else.

Slumber Party “…What do you mean, ‘it wasn’t me’?”
From the way neither of them were meeting his gaze, Mason could already tell exactly what Alice had meant by that statement. What the hell was wrong with him? Had he grown wings? Horns? He looked down, examining himself. He was still in the same clothes he’d been wearing yesterday – too shy to strip down further – and it didn’t look like he’d turned into a slime monster overnight.
“Pranks?”
He was still entirely lost, and beginning to feel like this was some practical joke the two young girls had concocted while he was sleeping. Alice was certainly childish enough to have suggested such a thing and maybe Claire could have been persuaded to go along with it if Alice had been insistent enough. Maybe they’d drawn on his face.
The horror!
Mason cast each of them a quizzical look but the two continued to stare straight past him. It was getting a little rude, to be honest, but maybe they were just building to a particularly odd, amusing punchline. He waited a couple more seconds but Claire failed to provide any more instructions beyond a direction towards the bathroom, so he sighed deeply and did as he was told.
His heart raced a little in anticipation – maybe he had grown some cool new feature! Sure, it wouldn’t be fork-proof skin, but a tail or a third eye or something would be a talking point at least.
He checked over his shoulder to see if the others were following before pushing open the door and marching straight up to the mirror.
“Okay, let’s see what mischief you’ve-”
Was the mirror broken?
Wait, that didn’t make sense. Mirrors didn’t stop working like that.
What the…?
He spun around. “Can either of you guys see me?” He waved wildly and jumped up and down for effect.
Either Mason was finally losing the plot and succumbing to hallucinations, or he’d somehow turned invisible in his sleep.

Paladin Am I more than you bargained for yet? | Alice and Claire followed Mason. Though following was perhaps too loose a term considering that they could not see him. Instead, they proceeded slowly down the corridor, wary that they might tread on his heels at any moment. Alice wondered if Mason might be naked, it would explain why there wasn’t a pair of boxer shorts floating in the air in front of them. On the other hand, she struggled to think why the relatively mild mannered man would have stripped down to sleep in a strange girl’s bedroom. Certain circumstances not withstanding of course.
A moment later both Claire and Alice were stood in the bathroom, staring at themselves in the mirror. Presumably Mason was between them and the reflective pane, but they had no way of knowing. Not until his voice once more emerged from the air.
“Definitely can’t see you… not even a shimmer.”
Alice squinted at the mirror, as though looking in a certain way might reveal Mason, she was disappointed, as the blonde man absolutely failed to appear before her.
“This is even better than the shit Elites have in Halo…”
She reached out carefully, aiming for what she was pretty sure was chest height. He was definitely there, as her fingers encountered resistance just in front of her. She could feel the fabric of his t-shirt against her fingers, and she pushed a little harder, just to check she wasn’t imagining things.
“That is so cool…”

The two walked out first and she dropped her arms from the stretch loosely to her sides. After she'd adjusted some of the floppy long hair on the very top of her head, she walked out and headed to the bathroom without the shock she'd had yesterday. She supposed.. it just went away. Maybe she'd just fallen into the realm of acceptance of the impossible.
She stood a couple feet away from Alice in the bathroom and looked into the mirror, exchanging a baffled facial expression to her and a small shrug of her bony shoulder. "Can't see anything.." she shook her head and then watched Alice's hand reach out to touch where his voice came from. Claire figured that was his chest. Alice's gaming lingo had the artist smirking a tad. Though she didn't partake a whole lot in them she was proud of herself for understanding the reference.
She hesitantly held her hand out and reached for what she thought might be his shoulder. Instead, she'd gone a bit too high and found her hand holding the side of his neck - she could feel it.. warm. Claire quickly took her hand back and took a deep breath at a new thought that came quickly and luckily enough to cover her bashfulness. "When's Dominic supposed to be here again?" Mason was about to be his favorite. "Can you... turn it off? You can't be stuck like this," she shook her head again, mouth scrunching. "Does it feel any different?"

Slumber Party With a deep breath that wouldn’t have been out of place at a yoga class, Mason accepted that neither the mirror nor his companions were able to see what was quite literally in front of them. It was strange because he could definitely see himself – there wasn’t even a slight visual hint that something was amiss. Maybe he felt a little different… or maybe he was expecting to.
It was a little odd being grabbed at, even if they both had the grace to hesitate before doing so. He got it, sure, they were curious, but a brief check with him first would have been nice.
“Yeah, yeah it’s cool… Weird, too,” Mason agreed as Alice pressed her fingers to his chest. He’d played Halo with friends before but had never owned a console himself, so only vaguely knew what she was talking about. It was reassuring that her hand hadn’t passed straight through him, at least. Mason had no plans on being a ghost, thank you very much.
Claire’s hand was only briefly at his neck before she drew it back. It must be a shock to touch something – particularly someone – that was suddenly, inexplicably invisible. Had he not looked in the mirror himself, Mason would still think they were pulling some kinda prank. A very well executed one, mind. They still weren’t meeting his eyes properly, which was starting to get disconcerting.
Lack of eye contact aside, Mason was actually quite pleased with this turn of events. It seemed the doctor’s magic had affected him after all, and here he was – invisible!
“Dom said he’d be getting here for about 9am, I think. I guess the others will be here then too,” he said. “Dunno if they’re expecting breakfast but we know Al’s a champ at that sorta thing now.” Mason grinned at Alice, smile faltering once he recognised the useless gesture. He hoped she got the vibe, in any case. He wasn’t sure how these things worked.
He felt around in his mind for some kind of new trigger to pull, making the same kind of futile effort that kids make when they try to emulate Jedi telekinesis. Nothing.
“Doesn’t seem to be an off-switch, C,” he said eventually, shrugging. “But hey, maybe I’ll figure one out. Not a priority right now though…” Mason felt his stomach rumble again. “Got any more delicious recipes for us, Al?”
Working out how this new ability worked was definitely on his agenda, but Mason had never been a man who could work on an empty stomach. Dom could burst through the door right now and tell them that their powers were a biological response to an imminent alien invasion and Mason would calmly sit himself down and repeat his request for pancakes.
Extraterrestrial tribulations be damned.
