Nell sat down in one of the chairs closer to the kitchen slowly, eyes still darting about out of habit, soaking in the room as if she were worried it might have contained a bear hidden somewhere. There of course were no bears nor other immediate dangers to be found, so she managed to get ahold of herself enough to slightly relax. Sonnet might have removed it from view but Nell had noticed the identical second duffel bag earlier, so it did seem the woman had a close connection to the men's behavior, but really it wasn't of concern to her- if she hadn't been there they almost certainly would have found some other carrier of a plain black duffel bag to harass. Also, an obvious meta in New York had to be used to death threats and it was only a matter of time before somebody followed up, so her getting caught up in this or not, somebody would have been targeted by those men and she'd almost certainly be target of violence eventually.
Calmed down just a bit, Nell watched Sonnet cooking, biting her lip at the question. "I'm from here, well I lived my first nine years in Rochester, but I've lived here since then. I go to a boarding school pretty far away though, and my parents are supposed to have me back for the holidays" she said in a tone that had something of an undercurrent of 'they'd rather I stayed out, it's just not allowed'. Her nervousness about the subject also could be made clear in the length of the sentence, as most of what Nell said was very short and to-the-point. Nell was after all still the same girl that hadn't even been able to talk much to the two other metahumans in her previous overcrowded public school because of her surname, mentioning her family frightened her. Abraham Omix was not especially widely known, but among New York metahumans many recognized the name as one of the more ardent opposers of them in the city, and a prolific event organizer and poster of long rambling posts on any website he could find to post on.

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet doesn't really do diplomacy, she should, her father had always stressed it was one of the most important parts of his job, but she'd never gotten the hang of it. She was like her mother in that regard, though both would deny it. As such, when Nell makes a vague allusion to her parent's perhaps not wanting her back over the holidays, Sonnet bulldozes right through it.
"You don't get on with them then? Is it cause you're a meta?"
Sonnet's own father had died a long time before the Event, so she has no real idea what his reaction would have been to her abilities. Kenshin, the man who had replaced her father as Oyabun valued her, though she was sure that was as a tool rather than an ally. Her mother disapproved, but more in the way she had always disapproved of everything involved with the Yakuza than because of any specific dislike of metahumans.
"That must make your holiday's less fun. You can't just stay at school? It's a boarding school right?"

Nell's throat caught at the question, she paused a moment, considering it. 'Yes' would have been a completely correct answer of course but it wouldn't have really captured it. "They've had problems with me before that was the case but it's made things worse" her fragility and inquisitiveness had never really been welcome in a household as aggressively pious as hers, but her dad's strong anti-metahuman sentiments of the conventional variety and her mom's fervent belief that metahuman powers were literal witchcraft given by demons, it hadn't been good for her favor with her family when she started occasionally getting bark instead of skin and veins filled with sap. Most other metas seemed to be able to either decide to use their power or had it active all the time, she was stuck somewhere between, she could start and shape her transformation, but couldn't make it go away.
Her eyebrows knit at Sonnet's question, it seemed reasonable enough that a boarding school would have students remaining over the holidays. "Nobody offered that to me" she said simply, leaving out that she didn't know if it was an option because she lacked the courage to ask about it, and though her parents had agreed to foot the bill her Aunt had been the one to set her up at EMBA in the first place. She supposed that was probably an option but her parents hadn't interacted with the school enough to realize that, Nell herself didn't have the willpower to ask about it, and her aunt had always been kind of oblivious. "I'm just sort of used to this city as well" she shrugged

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet drizzles oil into a heavy wok, turning the heat up high before starting to chop vegetables. She demonstrates a disturbing proficiency with the expensive chef's knife, though the kind that suggests it's not because she spends a lot of time cooking. The rapid tap-tap-tap fills the apartment for a moment until she stops suddenly, tossing the vegetables into the now smoking wok. There is a sudden hiss of escaping moisture before she speaks again. "If there's anything I've learned in this city, there's no one going to offer you shit." She casually glosses over the fact that she has probably just saved Nell's life. Though that was only because she had gotten her into the mess in the first place. At least that's the justification she gives herself.
She's still not entirely comfortable with Nell here in her apartment, but she's been running low on boltholes over the last few months, and in truth, this had been the first place she'd thought of when the need to escape had arisen. It wasn't as if the girl knew where exactly she was though, and Sonnet doubted she would try and turn her in, after all, Sonnet had saved her life.
"I still understand how you can miss home. It's strange the things we miss sometimes isn't it?"
This was a city that had made it very clear it didn't want their kind, yet here they both were. "No friends here in New York? I guess not after Central and how... Obvious your power is." She tosses the vegetables in the wok, before checking on the noodles and draining the boiling water from the pot.

Nell took a deep breath, the familiar enough sounds of cooking managing to keep her calm. She nodded silently at Sonnet's advice, hypocritical though it may be given the situation, she understood the basic intent. There certainly were places in the world metas had it harder than here, but life in New York was hard enough that it was safer to not trust people in general. Even before the event she'd needed a shell to hide in and shield her from others, a way out of the confines of her own skin, now she had those but it hadn't made anything a bit better.
Shaking her head at Sonnet's question Nell said "No, I didn't really have any before Central, even before the event, but it's gotten worse since then. My appearance earns the ire of a good half of society, my name the rest" she shrugs. Trying to be conversational and trying to keep from breaking down right there and then, Nell asked "And you? Are you close to anybody?"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Well that response was cryptic. Sonnet frowns. The girl's name? What about her name could make her so unpopular with half of the population? She shoots a curious look in the girl's direction, but restrains herself from asking for the truth of the matter. It's habit, mostly. Sonnet is in the kind of life where you don't ask too many questions, for fear that you might never ask any questions ever again. Her ability might leave her with little to fear these days, but that old habit is particularly hard to break.
The question catches her by surprise, and she hesitates for a moment. Quickly she begins to plate up in an attempt to cover her discomfort, poorly. It's a difficult question for her to answer. There is her mother, but she was always closer to her father. There is Evelyn, but she is both confused about her feelings for the scarred woman, and still unwilling to share that with anyone.
After a too long pause, "The priest. Mathias. I've known him since I was a little girl, see him occasionally still. He's a good man. Too good to be a priest... Probably. Someone I can trust though. Which is hard to find in my line of work."
Crossing the room with two bowls piled high with noodles and vegetables, she sets one down on the table for the girl before dropping into the couch and kicking her feet up. Immediately she begins to devour the meal, packing away the food that belies her diminutive stature and petite figure. "Eat. You look like you need a good meal."

Damn it. Nell didn't talk to people especially often, she'd probably spoken about as many words out loud since the event as most others did in a year, and so she had little practice in avoiding saying things that invited problematic questions. She winced, waiting for questioning... that simply failed to come, leaving her still safe in her own worldview where those not put off by her sporadically shifting skin would never trust the daughter of one of the city's most vocal and aggressive opponents of metahumanity in general.
Unfortunately it seems that Sonnet is just as uncomfortable with personal questions as her, leaving a lot of uncomfortable silence between them, Nell's face half bathed in the cold grey light from the windows and the other in the warm light from inside the apartment as she sat, a little line of dark rough bark running across her forehead just under her hairline. Listening to the answer Nell nodded sadly, she understood the feeling of having trouble with most people, she didn't really have anyone at all herself.
Nell self-consciously looked at herself, it was true that her figure looked almost skeletal as she had a bad habit of stress not-eating. She picked up her chopsticks to start eating with the clear unease of somebody who'd used them only a couple of times before, but she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Moments later, a series of tiny green shoots sprouted out of the sides of her fingers, wrapping around the chopsticks, keeping her fingers anchored to them in the right position. She continued eating, about as calm as she got which is to say still a little on edge, and looked at Sonnet as she did, her mossy green eyes wide in a constant deer-in-the-headlights look. "Thank you, I mean for everything, really. I ah..." she blushed deep purple "I've never really had anyone... be this friendly to me before, I appreciate it very much"

Shortcut My childhood spat back out the monster that you see | Sonnet is concentrating mostly on eating her own food, using her own chopsticks with the practised ease of someone raised with them. Though in many ways her father had not treated or raised her as a traditional Japanese woman, her mother had not approved. Eating in a traditional manner is a small nod to her wishes, but she is really the only family Sonnet has left now. She eats carefully, losing no crumb, nor speck of food, another habit born of her mother. Even so the food on her plate vanishes with alarming speed. There is a lot of it, easily two or three times the amount of food on Nell's own plate.
She eats quietly, hardly looking up at the girl sat opposite her as she focuses on demolishing the simple meal she has prepared. Finishing quickly, Sonnet drops her chopsticks onto the plate with a clatter, finally looking up again to focus once more on her guest. Her eyes are drawn to Nell's fingers by the bright green flash of fresh life. The sign of Nell's power catches her by surprise. The girl seems so self-deprecating and timid that Sonnet was not expecting to see her use her ability, certainly not in such a useful way. She raises an impressed eyebrow. "Neat trick. My mom wouldn't approve. Not very traditional."
She stands, taking her plate and moving to the kitchen where she drops it into the sink with a clatter. She fills a glass with water from the fridge chiller. Frowning, she turns back to Nell. She is certainly not used to people telling her that she is friendly, and that she is apparently the most friendly person Nell has run into takes her aback. Perhaps she really is getting soft. "You're welcome kid."
She stands in the kitchen with the glass of water in her hand. Not quite sure what to do next. She rarely has guests, and certainly not guests like Nell. She puts the glass down, beads of condensation running from the cool glass onto the kitchen surface. "You want to let your parents know you're OK or something? You must be late right?"
