"Hmmm." Adri's mind drifted away for a moment when Persephone talked about carving her own name into the Spades legacy. Truth be told, Adri didn't think she could ever achieve a anything near what Yen had. Then again, her ambitions were smaller. There was something she had thought about while in prison, turned over and imagined in her mind. An answer to a kind of hunger she felt, an attempt to sate something inside her. She gave Persephone a critical look. Well, perhaps she'd found an ally in that endeavor. Maybe time would tell. She wanted the other girl more slaved to her will before she shared that secret with her. "I could definately use some poison!" she said eagerly. "What have you got? You can make new stuff, right?" An evil sparkle came into her eyes. "Could you make something that makes a person so they can't move but they're still conscious and they feel pain? Or maybe makes the pain even worse than normal?" She could work with either. More ideas flitted into her head. Oh, she could work with this. The very small agreement to go now was all she needed to work with. "Great! Let me put my face on and we'll get going." She slid over on the couch to where she'd dropped her purse when she'd first come in, pulling out a small hinged box. The lid of the box had a mirror and the inside clunked with metal rings and bars. She quickly put these on: a horseshoe at the tip of her nose, a ring in her left eyebrow and another in her lower lip, a bar through two spots in her upper ear, a stud in her chin and another in her tongue. "Don't like to go there bare," she said as she put them in. "It doesn't fit the mood." As if realizing something- though she'd had what came next in mind for a few minutes now- she glanced at Persephone's clothes. "Hmm, you're dressed a bit normie. Got anything with more twang in it? Wait, I've got something." She went into her purse again, fumbling around inside before pulling something out in triumph. It was a collar, black and with spikes on the sides, a little lock on the clasp. Adri held a pink dog leash in the same hand. "Here, put this on!" she exclaimed, pushing the collar towards Persephone. "You'll fit right in!" She smiled. Come on, you little rabbit. Put it on.Persephone Dean

”What's it like, being her sister?”Adri paused, mid-bite, studying Persephone after she asked the question. What was it like? It was a strange question, to Adri. Yen had always been, well, Yen. Driven, relentless, more a force of nature than a person in some ways... yet someone who had always been for there Adri, in ways that Adri had to admit, deep down inside, that she really didn't deserve. Sure, Yen could be prickly, and a lot of people found her hard to get along with, but to Adri she was a pillar of strength that Adri couldn't do without. Yet it had always been that way; how did you describe something that was so intricately a part of life? Adri was a screwed-up person in a lot of ways, and she loved tweaking Yen when she got the chance, but she loved her sister fiercely, and in many ways it was a point of pride that she could poke her sister and get away with it when so few others could. She would do anything for Yen. B*tch and complain, sure, but she'd do it. And while she'd walk as close to the line as she could possibly manage, she'd never do anything that would really hurt Yen or her work. How did you describe all that? How did you explain something so deeply intertwined into your life? Even in prison, Adri had felt Yen's protective shadow, felt it in cigarettes passed her way with a whispered, “The queen sends her regards.” Felt it that day in court when the prosecutor was giving his final address, intoning that, “Miss Evgeniya is an extremely dangerous and unstable young woman who must be removed from society”, and she had glanced over and seen Yen's face in the crowd and seen, just for a moment, that it was going to be okay. Or the time she'd been laid up in the prison hospital for a week, and the nurse who came by the check her IV had showed her a spade neck tattoo. Yen had been there. Yen had always been there. You couldn't sum that up in a few words. But at the same time, she sensed an opportunity in the question, a chance to draw Persephone closer to her through an increased level of intimacy. Share something personal, and your relationship deepened. That was something Adri wanted, and could use. So.. she'd share something. Just a little bit. Not enough to matter, but enough to make Persephone feel she was being welcomed. She leaned back on the couch, tilting her head back and smiling, more melancholy smile than before. “It's kind of funny, especially seeing her now,” she said. “I mean... she's Yen. She can do basically anything she wants, always has.” She shook her head, laughing a little. “She's the impossible achiever, I'm kind of the family screw-up, I guess.” Adri set her plate down. “She was my parent, basically. I owe everything to her. You know she was a super nerd in high school? Chess champ and everything. But even then she could do anything she wanted to. Now I see her, and everyone treats her like she's god, and I think... yeah, that's about right.” Adri shrugged. “For better or worse, we're stuck with each other, and I wouldn't want it any other way.” That was a serious moment, and Adri was glad when the topic turned to tattoos again. Persephone didn't seem the type to jump up and down in excitement, but Adri thought she saw a look cross her face, like she might get the tattoo right now if she had the chance. Wow, this girl really was malleable. She'd barely had it two minutes and she was already ready to make it permanent? Well, Adri could work with that. “Oh, whenever you're sure you want it,” said Adri cheerfully. “I mean, it's permanent, don't do anything you'll regret.” There, the reasonable option spoken. Now for a push outside of it. “That said...” she raised her eyebrows and smiled a little wider, a mysterious, testing smile, as if she was offering Persephone membership in an elite class that she wasn't sure the plant girl was ready for. She glanced at her watch. “His shop should be open for a little while still. If you wanted to drop by, talk to him, see what he can do, we can do that.” Persephone Dean

Yes. Adri understood the psychology of her host perfectly now. Beneath that exterior was a girl who was craving, desperate for approval. The way her eyes lit up when Adri told her that Yen liked her was proof of that. Valuation, validation- Persephone longed for those things. Well, Adri was happy to make sure she got them- as long as it was on Adri's terms. The hooks had been set, and she would wrap Persephone until the girl couldn't breathe without seeking Adri's approval. "Anchor Steam's fine," called Adri, holding out her hand. Actually, she hated the stuff, but the right move in that moment was to offer approval. She saw the look pass over Persephone's features- apparently the girl wasn't quite ready to wait on her hand and foot. That was fine; they'd get there. "Yeah, it's neat!" said Adri when Persephone commented on Sailor Moon. Truth be told, the show was just background now to the far more interesting project of Persephone herself. The line about Yen worked like a charm. Fluster mixed with genuine appreciation and joy. God, the prison psychologist would probably call Persephone codependent or some s**t. Well, that wasn't fair. Some people were just made to be ruled by others. It wasn't their fault. "Well, you know Yen," said Adri, sipping her beer. "It's not like she would admit that she likes you. That would be too... human." She gave a smile to Adri like they had a shared secret. "But you can tell." She watched Persephone rub her neck, imagining a tattoo in that same spot. Hm... that would look nice. Maybe a little flaming spade, to show Adri's touch. She filed the idea for later in the back of her mind. "So yeah, if you like the tattoo idea I know some people you can talk to about it," said Adri, switching gears. "Something like that, you might be looking at more than one session but I'm telling you it's totally worth it." Persephone Dean

Yennefer had probably warned her about this at some point. Something about not sharing secrets with people they couldn't trust completely... Eh, whatever. Yen kept this girl around and Adri didn't have too many secrets left from her, so it was probably okay. Besides, needling Yen was fun. It couldn't hurt her, right? "Wellllllll..." said Adri, leaning back in her chair and glancing at the ceiling. "Did you ever watch that movie Pet Semetary? The one where the cat died so they buried it and it came back all zombied and like a walking corpse? Yen had a cat that looked EXACTLY like that when we were kids. I think she literally found it in the trash." She took another bite of her muffin. "Named it Samus, after that video game. She was a super nerd in high school." Sophia Blood

Once the pizza had arrived, Adri chewed on her slice as she considered Persephone's question if Chip ever got up his courage. "I don't know," she said. "He'd probably be crap in bed; his kind usually are. I might give it a go just for the fun of it and dump him after." She laughed. "See, that kind is desperate for any kind of affection, so if you give 'em even the tiniest bit they'll make themselves your slave. And then, if you get tired of them, the expression on their faces when you tell them you're done!" She laughed again. "I think way too many ladies make the mistake of trying to go after the best guys. But those guys, they know they can go somewhere else, so you have to perform to keep them. Take a pathetic guy, though, and he knows you're all he's gonna get, so he'll do anything to keep you. Just gotta make sure he remembers how pathetic he is. Hey, you got any beer?" Whatever other thoughts Adri had were distracted when Persephone asked about Sailor Moon. A light of excitement came into her eyes right away. "It's about this girl who finds out she's the reincarnation of a moon warrior and has to battle all these enemies to defend Earth and oh my god it's so cute I can't stand it. And it's got lesbians! Neptune and Uranus!" Her eyes were sparkling and she sighed. "I love it so much." Somewhere in Adri's mind a small warning light had come on. When asserting dominance over a person, it was important to flout your superiority over them, so they knew they were pathetic and needed you, but you also needed to praise them regularly, so they felt affirmed and wanted to be around you. Cycles of deprecation and praise; that was the key. And Adri's senses were telling her it was time for some praising. Glancing at Persephone, she said, "You're pretty cool. No wonder Yennefer likes you." Persephone Dean

The woman's chuckle grew into a laugh, and Adri stared at her with a raised eyebrow. Maybe her last partner really had gone crazy. She was caught off guard when the other woman grabbed her and pulled her in for a kiss, not that she minded. It took her a minute to find her mental footing again and comprehend what was being said. "You know Yen?" For a moment she felt fear- had she accidentally let in one of Yennefer's enemies? Then something else clicked into place and her eyes went wide. "Wait! You're that Sophia?" Now it was Adri's turn to throw back her head and laugh. "No way! What are the odds!" She laughed again. "You drive Yen crazy! She called you a pest of a woman. Oh my god, she's gonna kill me for sleeping with you. Well, maybe kill you, anyway. Sorry about that if it happens." She took a bite out of her muffin. She studied Sophia for a moment, trying to evaluate the request for information. Adri loved embarrassing Yen as much as anyone, but it was different when someone else was trying to elbow their way in. Her deep-set loyalty to Yen made her hesitate. But Sophia's smile was infectious, and Adri knew enough about her to know she almost drove Yen mad sometimes. Slowly, a smile spread across her face. "What do you want to know?" Sophia Blood

Adri quite liked the way her relationship with Persephone Sas shaping up. It was clear that the other woman was desperate for approval, and willing to do almost anything to secure it. As long as Adri kept praising her, it looked as though the other girl would let her do just about anything she wanted. Not bad at all. "I know," said Adri when Persephone complimented Adri's art skills. "I've spent a long time walking around with stuff sharpied on my skin. Give it a little bit, see how you feel." "Why not?" she said when Persephone asked about the location, giving Persephone's rear an affectionate pat. "@ss tattoos are the best! You've got more room than on your arm and they don't hurt as much as the back 'cuz there's better padding." Her eyes gleam, and her voice lowered a notch. "Plus they drive guys wild in bed." She'd kept her hand resting on Persephone's bottom, a subtle gesture to prevent Persephone from replacing her pants while Adri was talking. A power play, really. But the knock at the door and the call of "Pizza!" made Adri leap to her feet with a cry of excitement. "Pizza!" She found Persephone's purse on a side table, opened it and pulled out some bills. Somewhere on her way to the door she realized that Persephone's rear would be visible by whoever was standing at the door. Somewhere further on she decided she didn't care. She threw open the door. "Hey!" "Oh, Adrijana," said the pizza guy, a pimpled youth with unruly brown hair. "Didn't expect you here." "Hey, Chip!" Adri grinned and flicked him the bills. "Just hanging out. How's life?" There was an awkward second as Chip passed the pizza. "Uh, fine I guess." Chip's eyes drifted over the room, pausing just for a moment on one particular spot. "Uh, new girlfriend?" "Just having some fun," said Adri sweetly, closing the door a bit and moving her body to cut off his view. "Anything else?" Hesitation, then a look of resignation. "No. Have a good night." "See ya, Chip!" said Adri, closing the door. As she came back to Persephone, Adri was laughing. "I flirt with him sometimes," she said as she dropped back on the couch. "He's one of those nerds who can't get a date to save his life, and I'm a crazy tattooed chick who plays video games. I couldn't match his fantasies better if he wished me out of a genie bottle. He's crushing on me so hard. I keep pushing him to see if he'll ever try to ask me out, but so far he's too chicken." Her smile turned taunting. "Bet he thinks of me when he's alone, though." She tapped the pizza. "Come on, dig in." Persephone Dean

Tattoos were something that got Adrijana genuinely excited. She loved body art, loved talking about it, showing hers off, and especially loved helping other people pick out new designs. The fact that it would be Persephone's first only made it more exciting. She was fully vested in tattoo talk now, barely paying attention to what was on the television screen. When Seph pointed out the spot on her back she might want a tattoo, Adri nodded enthusiastically. “That's perfect! A lot of people start with one on the bicep or forearm but I don't think that's you at all. Hmm, vine or branches? So what if we did something like..” She uncapped the marker and began drawing on Persephone's skin, brow furrowed in concentration. Years of experimenting in tattoos had made Adri a respectable artist. After a few minutes she examined her work with a critical eye. “Not bad, could use a little more flair maybe...” Her eyes lit up. “Wait! I've got it!” and without asking for permission she grabbed at the button on Persephone's jeans. A moment later they were down and Adri was drawing on Persephone's buttock. “Hold still, this is great.” The marker flew furiously over Persephone's skin. “Yessss.” She finished the roots, added the A's and the smaller spade symbols (thinking to herself that A could stand for Adrijana) and drew a rectangle around the whole design, marking it as a card. Done, she sat back and admired her work. “Oh my god, you've got to get that,” she said. “It's perfect.” Persephone Dean

Though she couldn't have put it into words, Adri had already found a mental classification she could keep Persephone on. In prison, she had by necessity become hyperaware of the social relations between women, and trained herself to take her rightful place in whatever hierarchy resulted. Adri would have put it sexual terms: some women were dominant, others submissive, and Adri had already classed Persephone ad a submissive. That was fine with Adri. She would take her place as the animating figure in this situation, working, as due always did, until Persephone had entirely buckled under her will. It wasn't a conscious process; it was simply Adri's nature to try and rule others. In Persephone she seemed to have found a willing victim. Not that it was a conscious choice. Like a shark smelling blood, she sensed the prescence of a void where she could assert her own authority over Persephone. "Don't worry!", Adri laughed at Persephone's question about a test. "You'll know all there is to know before too long." She took another hit from the bong at the question about extra credit. "Oh god, yes." At the question about tattoos, Adri's eyes lit up with glee. "You should totally get some! Mine the spades, obviously- Yen won't admit it but she totally loves that I got so many- and the thorns," she tapped her neck. "That one's from the Center," (meaning prison). She grined, tongue snaking out of her mouth to lick her lower lip. "I love the message it sends. Here's a girl who's not afraid to be different, someone who's got some sharp points on her. And this!" she turned around and pulled up the back of her shirt to show the medley there to Persephone. "Isn't that awesome? It's all the deep things. Cthuhlu and tentacles! You can't beat that. Come on," she said, sitting up suddenly, the show forgotten. "You've hot a sharpie, right?" In the space of a few steps she was in Persephone's kitchen, opening drawers. "Got it!" She da me back, marker uncapped. "So what you do is you start by drawing it on yourself, see how it looks. Then you get it done. Get it somewhere you can cover it up if you don't want it seen all the time." Adri tapped her hip with two fingers. "I got a few I don't show off too often myself." She held the marker in an expectant posture. "Well? What have you thought about? Don't worry about it too much, just go wild for now and we'll see what you look like." Her smile turned seductive. "You can't have a good party if you're too wound up, you know." Persephone Dean

Adri's eyes glinted at the other woman's words, a wicked smile of her own parting her face. “Aww, if you're there, gorgeous? I think I could be convinced to enjoy quite a lot.” She saw Sophia checking her out and set her mug on the counter to strike a pose, one hand on her head, one hand on her hip. Her tongue flicked inside her upper lip and out, just slightly. Her voice became plaintive, an inferior imitation of Sophia's begging tone a few minutes earlier. “Oh, do educate me Miss Sophia! Anything you want hehhehhehhehheh,” she finished, the tone and words dissolving into a dark snicker. “You want breakfast or anything? I got, like, oatmeal and English muffins an' sh!t,” said Adri, snagging a half empty pack of the latter from begin the toaster. She glanced over at Sophia. “Dunno if they're actually English or if it's like fortune cookies where they were invented by Americans.” She took one out of the bag, pulled it apart and dropped it in the toaster. Absentmindedly she scratched at her hip below her shirt where a small bandage covered part of her skin. She took a drag on her cigarette. “Don't have much going on this week, so any night a cute thing like you wants-” Adri raised her eyebrows suggestively. “-you can have me.” The toaster dinged and Adri pulled a paper plate from the cabinet. If Sophia was paying attention, she might have seen that Adri did none of the things that usually accompany bringing something fresh out of the toaster: no licking of fingers, no muttered exclamations at how hot it was, no attempt to grasp it gingerly. She grabbed the muffin and dropped it on her plate exactly as if the heat bothered her not at all. She had taken about two bites when a song from the Matilda musical began to play. Without turning, Adri grabbed her phone off the counter and glanced at it. “It's my sister,” she said to Sophia. “Gimme a minute.” She answered the phone, voice cheerful. “Hey Yennefer! Nah, just hanging out. What, tonight?” Adri glanced at Sophia again. “Yeah I can come over in a bit. Yennnnn! I told you not to worry about it.” Another glance Sophia's way. “No, she's cool. Yennnnn! I don't need a lecture.” Her voice was plaintive. “I can take care of myself. Can we talk later? Yes, I promise! Bye.” Adri hung up, letting out a long sigh. “Older sisters,” she said. “Thinks she's my mom. Always trying to make sure I eat my vegetables, wash behind my ears and don't bring strange women home.” Adri laughed. “I bet you'd drive her crazy.” Sophia Blood

The house was big, almost bigger inside than out to Adrijana's eyes. For a moment she stood in the massive front hall, mouth gaping, awed. This... place. It seemed like Heaven. Paneled walls and floors, ceiling high above, everything flawless and screaming money. “Holy s***!” she muttered. Footsteps ahead of her made her look up, and then a voice she hadn't heard in five long years came sweetly into her ear. Adri's face light up like a beacon. “Yenni!” she exclaimed, dropping her bag and closing the gap between them. For a moment she stumbled over her reply. Yennefer was far more in touch with their heritage than Adri, and Adri had had little chance to practice her Serbian while in prison. But after a moment the words came pouring out. “Yennefer, oh my god! How are you doing, what is this place?” as she enthusiastically returned the embrace. They separated, the look of joy on Adri's face undimmed even as she sensed Yennefer's desire for something more formal. On being told she was different her hand went to her throat, instinctively touching the thorns there that were her most prominent adornment from prison. “Yeah! I had a cell with a lady who'd been a tattoo artist outside. She fixed me up with a bunch of stuff!” She looked down at Yennefer, a smile dancing at the corners of her mouth. She was taller than Yen. She hadn't forgotten that, but something about seeing it again gave her a deep pleasure down in her soul. “And you're still the same! My little big sister!” On impulse she lunged forward to give Yennefer another quick hug. “Home?” She glanced around again, taking in the front hall for the second time. “Yenni, this place is amazing! You have to tell me everything!” Yennefer Evgeniya

Prison wasn't a topic that Adri enjoyed dwelling on. She thought of herself as a free spirit, someone who did what she wanted, and thinking about her time spent locked up really put a damper on that whole self-image. She grinned at Persephone's comment about parties for friends who got out, showing her white teeth. It was a cruel smile. “Yeah,” she said. “Party all the time.” “Of course I'm gonna train you,” said Adri, reaching out and stroking Persephone's cheek affectionately. “It's a majorly important skill! There's cultivating the right ambiance, the right snacks, the right entertainment... don't worry, we'll cover it all.” She waved a hand in dismissal at Persephone's warning about the strength of her plant. “Pffft, the day I can't handle this stuff is the day I go crying in shame.” She took another draw, a deep one. Wow, Persephone really wasn't lying. This stuff was strong. Better order the pizza soon, while she still could. “Hey, I want two large pizzas, one all meat with pineapple, one cheese... yes, of course that includes anchovies! Yeah, have a good night, sweetheart!” Adri made a kissing sound and hung up, giggling. She glanced over at Persephone, raising an eyebrow as the other girl settled into a yoga position. “D@mn, girl!” Adri tried to imitate the position and found that she couldn't, flopping onto the couch in a heap with a giggle. “You gotta teach me how to do that!” Grabbing the remote, she began flipping through the viewing options, grinning again when Persephone pulled her shirt off. “Now we're talking! Maaaannnn, you'd be fine if you had some ink on you,” she said offhandedly, jerking the edge of her shirt up to show off some of her own when one of the shows on the screen caught her eye. “SAILOR MOON!” she almost screamed. “YES YES YES YES YES! SAILOR MOON SAILOR MOON!” She clicked play, her eyes dreamy and enraptured, and began singing along with the opening theme. Persephone Dean

Adri grinned fiendishly at Sophia's performance, making a show of considering as she drank her coffee before saying, “I guess it'll do for now. Keep talking, though. That accent, mmmmm.” She stood up, absentmindedly brushing at a speck of dirt on the tail of her shirt, and led the way to the kitchen, picking her way around the mess in the hall without really paying much attention to it. It was just part of her life. Several of the spade tattoos on her body could easily be seen: on her left bicep, on her right forearm, on her left inner thigh, on the back of both her thighs. In the kitchen she got out her last clean mug and poured some coffee for her guest. “How do you like it, black or good?” The sink was filled with dirty dishes. She poured herself some more coffee and drank while studying the other woman with a critical eye. “I never banged a British chick before,” she said. “You in town for long? Was thinking of going dancing soon, could use a plus one.” A slightly dangerous smile came into your eyes. “I'm guessing from last that this isn't your first rodeo.” Sophia Blood

“Oh, uh, thanks, I like to keep it clean… ”Adri almost rolled her eyes. The woman was clearly high enough that she was having some trouble keeping up. That was all right, though. It wasn't as though Adri cared to be sober at that moment. Adri kept smiling. It only faltered slightly when the other woman asked where she'd gotten the idea of coming to her for a party. “Well, you know,” said Adri airily. “I was kind of out of circulation for the last five years. Kind of lost track of most of my friends. Or they're still in prison.” She didn't like to talk about it, but she had formed some semblance of relationships in prison, even stunted and unhealthy ones. It wasn't the sort of place where you found your best friend, but it was impossible for human beings to live together in close proximity without developing some kind of kinship. Her relationships outside had been broken. She had made new ones inside, and now those were broken too. She was alone, in a way she had rarely been before, and though she couldn't express it some part of her felt it. She laughed, a cruel sound, as always, as she took the bong Persephone offered her. “Hey, if you've got one of these and know how to use it you're already halfway to being a party yourself. Don't worry, we can get you trained in the rest.” Taking the lighter she lit up and sucked in a long draft. Her eyes popped in surprise. “Holy crap, this is great!” she took another draft. “Real smooth, deep flavor... wow.” She closed her eyes and inhaled again. She could already feel it beginning to dig its hooks into her mind. She opened her eyes again and gave Persephone an admiring look. “This is your strain? You bred this?” “Right,” she said, handing the bong back to Persephone. “You got another piece like this? Set me up while I order the pizza. Where's your remote-” She grabbed one off a side table and turned on the TV. “You got netflix? I'll find us something.” She paused, giving the other woman a appraising stare and looking her up and down again. She saw the conflict between wanting to be polite and wanting to entertain a guest writ in Persephone's features, even if she didn't understand what she was seeing. “You look tense. You should try to relax and take your clothes off or something.” Persephone Dean

She woke up strangely warm and with something heavy beside her in bed. Adri blinked, glanced around, and slowly remembered the night before. Well, most of it. There were some parts that were pretty fuzzy. Still, the fact that she was naked and had another woman in her bed gave her a pretty good idea. Carefully distangling herself, she rolled to the edge of the bed and found a clear space to plant her feet on the carpet. Most of her stuffed animals had fallen to the floor, but a bear and a tiger still leaned against the wall at the corner of the bed. A stuffed dog lay on its side at her feet and she set it next to her on the bed. She glanced across the room to where her dresser stood, on the other side from her gaming computer, the drawers open and discarded articles of clothing hanging out. She huffed quietly. Feeling under her bed, she found a slightly stained pink T-shirt with a playboy bunny done in glitter paint and put it on. She picked her way across the floor, instinctively stepping from clean space to clean space, out into the hall and into the kitchen. She put on a pot of coffee, found her phone in the pocket of the pants she'd lost in the living room last night, checked her Facebook and found nothing interesting. She opened a drawer, took out a cigarette- nothing more interesting than tobacco, unfortunately- lit it between her fingers and took a drag. After a minute she poured some of the coffee into a mug, added her customary cream and sugar, and after hunting around in one of the cabinets found an unlabeled brown bottle that she poured a generous helping of into her cup as well. Feeling much better braced, she took her cup and her cigarette and went back to her room.
