The insistence that came from Ashley the second she'd allowed herself to crack remotely any kind of smile was so overbearingly exaggerated that it stretched that damn smirk just a little wider. "Geez, okay, yes, yes, puppies and pizza," she waved her hand away, but the singer continued on and even got a half-chuckle out of her. "Sto-o-o-ooop," she reached out with an arm, jokingly pushing Ashley's shoulder, "You're the worst."
Even after the small success of normalcy between the two, her friend still went back to the worrisome of a couple other questions on her mind. "Please, I couldn't leave that little guy if I tried," she nodded with a warmer smile. He was a snarky little thing, but his unconditional cuddly love often got Cory through more than a person should admit. That's what pets were for though, right? "Don't worry about it. I'm fine. Okay?" she didn't particularly want to answer specifics of the living situations and it was clear that Ashley already had her assumptions. Rather than confirming them, Cory just needed her to know she was going to be alright.
Her eyes tried rolling at the 'tough girl' statements and issues of her pride, but what was she going to do? Deny it? Case and point in her reaction right there. A guilty tinge of red hit her cheeks for a second at the realization before Ashley had thankfully changed the subject to something relating back to their normalcy again. At least, what bits of that they had left this evening. She mentally told herself it'd be back on the right track in time. Nothing worth having didn't require some amount of effort. 'I... I missed you too.' Another odd smirking scrunch, softer this time, melted on the vigilante's features. She missed the awkwardness on Ashely's face, giving her own and looking away precisely at the same time.
"You wanna stay chilling here for a while? We could always try and grab that coffee if you want." Oh, good, moving on. "I doubt they're open this late, Miss Midnight Espresso," she laughed, stuffing her hands comfortably in her jacket pockets again, posture finally relaxing into her usual permanently casual demeanor. "You turned the big 2-1 and we haven't gotten birthday drinks," she shrugged a shoulder with the idea, "But we can plan that in advance sometime if you want. Oh! There's uh, this festival-type thing next month that my mom wanted to invite you to. It's a Native thing, a Powwow" she grinned, equal parts abashed and proud. "What are you doing on the 18th and the rest of that weekend?"
