Melody didn't really get on with hers. She wondered if the pop star had lucked out in getting a room that didn't have a roommate in it yet, or if she had a private room. Judging by the fact that she had a private chef Melody would have guessed the latter. Which made her more jealous.
She didn't question why Maia was treated differently, it was pretty obvious, she had money. So did Keke, only hers was demonstrated by a gold credit card rather than a private room and chef. Melody wondered if Maia carried a Platinum credit card. That would buy an awful lot of Dominos. She glared thoughtfully at the greasy slice before taking a contemplative bite. She was definitely thinking too much about pizza, the limited food here was driving her nuts.
"He keeps you on a proper diet?"
A string of cheese steadfastly refused to separate, and she chewed on it until it did. It might be good to eat some actually healthy food. They had a fairly balanced diet here, and she made sure to get fruit and vegetables. She was a teenager, she wasn't stupid. Plus her father was a doctor.
"Sure, I'd lo-"
She cut herself off as she experienced a sudden flash of guilt. It was pretty clear that Maia was lonely. After all, Melody never saw her in the lunch room and didn't remember ever seeing her hanging out with anyone her own age. Or anyone not her own age for that matter. Was Melody taking advantage of that isolation? Whether she meant to or not?
She realised that thinking about it didn't make much difference, if Maia could read her emotions she'd have realised what had derailed Melody's train of thought. Maybe the best way to deal with it was just to explain what she was thinking. "Sorry, I just thought… like… do you…" It wasn't going so well.
She steeled herself, before plunging ahead. "I don't see you hanging around with many people here. Ummmm, I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage…" She trailed off pathetically.

The salad, fresh fruit and tea couldn't have been any more different to the greasy food currently occupying Melody's plastic tray. Melody was currently at the age where she could eat whatever she wanted and it didn't see to have much of an effect on her figure, although comparing their chosen meals did leave Melody feeling insecure about her decision. Until Maia revealed that she had a personal chef, at which point Melody was too busy feeling shocked by the fact that someone here had a personal chef.
Gold credit cards, personal chefs. Had she accidentally been sent to a finishing school? On the other hand, Maia had also said something else. That she tended to eat in her room.
"In your room? Like… By yourself?"
It was a little sad to hear and Melody wondered how many people Maia really knew here at the academy. Most of the kids here did seem to be pretty normal, outside of the metahuman abilities. Maybe it was harder for someone like Maia, a famous popstar, to come to a school like this. After all, almost everyone would at least know of her, even if they wouldn't recognise her straight away. The girl was probably sick and tired of being ambushed by fans around every corner.
Melody realised that people like her were probably one of the reasons why Maia avoided the canteen. Things must be even worse considering she could sense emotions as well, that way there would be no escape. The younger girl resolved to at least not contribute to that problem. That meant she needed to untie her tongue and actually start talking like a proper human being.
"At least you get to eat better food than the rest of us losers. I'd love to have a private chef on call, although I'd probably get really fat…"

The whole school funnelled into that one building, even so it was rarely busy. The Academy had clearly been built for at least a couple of thousand students, and they hadn't even hit a fraction of that yet. They hadn't left the library until the bell, but it was much closer to the canteen than most of the other buildings, as a result there were just a few of the older kids helping themselves to food and grabbing the best seats.
Melody grabbed one of the plastic trays, pulling out another dry one for Maia. She was still pretty surprised that the pop star had agreed to eat lunch with her, she'd have thought the older girl would have had her own friends she'd rather spend time with. She wasn't sure what to say. It had been easier in the lesson, at least then there had been something clear to do, something obvious to talk about. Right now she found herself tongue-tied. Melody did not get tongue-tied.
She was grateful when the lunch lady interrupted the awkward silence in the queue by dropping a large, greasy slice of pizza onto the tray. That was followed by greasier fries, and what Melody was sure was the exact same vegetable medley she'd had the first time she got lunch here. She prodded it suspiciously. It was soggy.
Taking her 'meal' across the canteen she slid it onto one of the last good tables by the windows. They tended to fill up quickly with the older students, so it was pretty lucky that they'd managed to get one before the rest of the classes got there. She picked uncomfortably at the fries in the plastic tray.
"So uh… I don't see you in here much normally. Do you study through lunch most times?"

She smiled at the singer's positive response, but was unsurprised that there were several errors in her Spanish lyrics. She was bright, but she was prepared to do the extra work that would enable her to be truly comfortable with the language in the way that someone like Maia obviously was.
She pulled the returned pad to her, reading through the corrected version to see where she had made mistakes. She wasn't sure just how good her lyrics actually were, she might have a musical background, but she hadn't properly played the piano in years, that was even rustier than her Spanish. She took the pen back up when Melody told her to keep going, pointing at one of the errors the singer had highlighted.
"So when I write it this way it should be the feminine one?"
Once Maia had explained a little more about her grammatical and gender errors, Melody started trying to write a few more lines. That is where she ran into the wall. They'd been here for about twenty-five minutes already, factoring in how late Melody had been meant there was very little time left in the lesson. She'd only managed about half a line by the end.
Part of it was struggling with another language that she didn't speak very well. The other part was attempting to write lyrics that seemed to naturally follow on from the song, and weren't dreadful. She'd never forgive herself if she ruined Maia's next album with a set of poor lyrics. Grimacing at her lack of progress, she passed the pad back when the bell went to mark the end of the period.
"Sorry, I got kinda stuck with that bit."
The few people in the library started filtering out, and with a glance at her phone Melody realised that it was lunchtime. Swinging her bag onto her shoulder she hesitated, then pushed forward anyway.
"Hey… you… y'wanna get lunch?"

She didn't particularly like either of them, too sorority for her, but she knew them. She had heard about them losing their excursion privileges though. Admittedly, she hadn't known why. She didn't say as much, but she didn't exactly try to hide as much, quirking her eyebrows in surprise.
The young student had actually lost her excursion privileges several times. She'd had detentions too, but when you couldn't leave the campus anyway they had rather less impact than they'd had at her state school. Her only chance to actually leave said campus was rather more precious to her. Which was probably why she had left the campus for less than 50% of the weekends she had been here. The teachers were clearly good at their job, and had identified exactly what it was that she valued. She hadn't missed out on excursion in weeks.
She snorted at his comment. "Sure, they'd have to pull the stick out his ass first though."
Melody had met Buckley several times. The Principal was fairly hands off, but he would sacrifice his time for specific students. Unfortunately, one of those specific students was Melody, and she knew the Principal's office pretty well by now. She'd thought about burning her way out through his lock, but never actually had the guts to do so. It should have been easy enough.
Which was probably why it was appropriate that Madison referenced her powers at this point. "Oh no, you tell me what you can actually do first."
She pushed away from the wall. "I've never seen you do anything overly athletic, so you're not auxiliary, I've never seen anything flashy so you can't be a Brick or a Blaster, and I've never see you do anything with any tech more advanced than your phone, so that's gadget out of the question. And traveller? You? Sure… That leaves a couple, but I think you're a gleam. So what do you do?"

It wasn't entirely in character for her, usually Melody was more than happy to continue derailing lessons, and she certainly would have loved to keep talking to Maia about anything. However, she really didn't want to explain to the teen idol about her criminal record and the fact that this school had quite literally been the alternative to juvie for her.
Melody accepted the headphones gratefully though. Maybe Maia couldn't sense the deception, or maybe she was diplomatically avoiding it, realising it was something Melody didn't want to talk about. Not that her doing that really felt any better. Melody realised a little what it must be like to have Maia's ability, to have no one feel like their thoughts were safe when they were around you.
Slipping the headphones over her ears, Melody glanced up at Maia once she had them secured, waiting for the other girl to press play on the connected phone. She lowered her gaze back to the lyrics written before her. It was clear where the words were supposed to begin in the song, and she mouthed them as the music playing, stumbling and adjusting a few times as she worked out how the melody was going.
She smiled encouragingly, then hesitantly began to write out a couple of sentences in Spanish. The grammar wasn't quite there, but the words were largely accurate and well-spelled. There was maybe even a bit of the tune in there, once it had been edited a little. Melody had enough of a grounding in music to at least follow a tune. She crossed out several words, went back and changed things a couple of times. It took her nearly fifteen minutes, but eventually she'd produced something she was happy with. Not that she wanted to show it to Maia Morales of all people. Still, with little choice in the matter she slid the notebook back over.
"How's that?"

To be fair, Melody didn't even know if all of the teacher's had powers. There were one or two that had demonstrated abilities, but on the whole it didn't seem to come up a lot. There were rumours that some students had individual lessons or training sessions regarding their powers, but Melody didn't know anyone that had actually had one. Or at least no one who had told her about it.
"Huh."
It changed her opinion of him a little. He wouldn't understand what it was to be a metahuman, and if he was coming here for such a ridiculous reason then he probably wouldn't understand a lot of the students that were here. They all had powers, and a lot of them had problems linked to those powers as well. Melody might not have issues because of her abilities, but she had issues, she had abilities, therefore she had ended up here. Add to that the fact that a lot of the students were here on scholarships, funded by the government, and he was already starting to lose a connection with these kids before they'd started, most of them would never have even seen a grand piano, let alone played on.
Her body language closed up a little bit more. Her hands were still in her pockets but they pushed closer together in front of her, pulling her shoulders forwards and shrinking her stance somewhat. It didn't help that he kept drifting off into some other world.
Eventually she removed a hand from her pocket, raising it and jerking a thumb towards the door. "Well uh… I'm gonna go… Good luck with the job I guess?"

She loved her music, and had even been in the crowd for one of her California concerts. It was before the Event, so at least she knew that she hadn't contributed to the stars discomfort, although she wondered if she was now. Or had during any of the other times she had encountered the singer during her time at EMBA. She knew that her reaction had probably been desperately obvious to the singer despite her attempts to keep it a secret. Maybe the attempting to keep it a secret had made it more obvious to the empath. Regardless, she was going to pretend like it wasn't an issue.
The conversation had moved on however, and Melody responded with a nod. "Yeah pretty much, it's like twenty miles to the nearest town. There aren't exactly any armed guards but I doubt anyone is going to drive us out there."
She realised what the pop star might be thinking, and hurriedly tried to correct things, "I don't think it's like that for you. You can probably leave whenever you want. Even if you were here for the same reason as people like me you're like a pop start and everything. If someone famous said they were being imprisoned by their school they'd probably be let out, like, right away."
After all, Maia hadn't been sent here by their father, and a court order. She'd come here of her own free will. If the judge hadn't offered this then she might well have been looking at spending some time in a Juvenile hall, not that this was that much different. She couldn't leave here when she wanted to anyway, so she didn't really see the difference.
She tried to change the topic, not wanting to talk about the reasons why she couldn't leave. Unfortunately the only avenue she saw wasn't exactly appealing either. "Anyway, shouldn't we be carrying on with the lesson?"
She couldn't believe she'd actually said that.

Melody meant it as well, her ability may have a dead give away in her eyes, but at least she had control over whether she used the other aspects of her power or not. When she'd first got them accidental fires and holes in the carpet had been commonplace, but she'd learned how to control them, just like one extra muscle, or three in her case.
She was a little jealous, even so. Maia could have told Melody virtually anything and she'd have had little choice but to believe her. There was no external giveaway as to the young star's abilities, it was all based in her mind. That and life would be much easier if you could always tell how the people around you were feeling. Still, as Maia went on, Melody couldn't help but feel her jealousy fade.
"It must be hard in that kind of setting, especially if you have to change how everyone else is feeling just to get a break."
Melody knew better than most people how difficult it could be to live with abilities. Hers might not be such an issue, but occasionally she would hear her father discussing a particularly difficult case with a colleague. Many the metahumans he worked with had even less control than Maia. She shrugged in sympathy, "It could be worse though, some of the metas my Dad works with have even less control than that."
"And, at least there's less people here than in, like, the city or something."
Still, if there was anyone who could help Maia, it would probably be someone here. The MNRU seemed to focus on people with really problematic powers, rather than those with less serious inconveniences. That and it would probably be all over Twitter if Maia was seen going into one of the Metahuman centres around the country.
"I wish we could like… leave though…"

It was clearly easier when you were an adult. Maybe it was the car thing. Or maybe it was the respect. Not that it seemed to matter much to Professor Lane. Staying in the same city for his whole life? No wonder he wasn't worried about moving to a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere, he'd never been anywhere else. Not that she had.
"I've never even left San Francisco, other than this place obviously."
Maybe she would have done, if her mother hadn't died. Her dad didn't travel much, she'd seen the recordings of his old lectures so she knew he used to, but he didn't anymore. Not since her mom died. That meant that she couldn't travel either. Getting on the plane to come here had been the first time she'd actually been on a plane. It should have been a lot more exciting that it had been.
Her eyes flicked to his fingers as he paused briefly to press a few keys, constructing a tune without even thinking. She frowned. He did it without even thinking, perhaps because he felt uncomfortable talking about moving.
She leaned against the wall, hands by her sides, nestled in the pockets of her hoodie. Puffing out her cheeks, she momentarily let the air escape between pursed lips, before speaking again. "Can't believe you're moving from UCLA to some shitty little school for problem kids."
She looked him up and down, quite obviously, and without any shame. It was clear she was looking for something, but when said something failed to materialise she simply asked the question.
"I guess you have a power then?"
It didn't really make sense to her otherwise.

Like excitement, admiration, and now she had to admit, as blood rushed to her face, embarrassment. Clearly her efforts to hide her feelings when she saw Maia had been completely pointless. She may as well have actually squealed with excitement if the popstar could simply tell how she felt by being in the same room as her. It would have amounted to the same thing anyway.
She tried to hide her embarrassment, realising at the same time that it was utterly pointless. She continued nonetheless, looking down to hide the flush in her cheeks as she searched for something to say in response. Unfortunately, her normally quick wit did not provide her with anything of use. "Yeah, emotions are hard."
Pure genius Melody…
She was normally much more confident about things like this, and finding herself at a loss for words was a situation that was uncomfortably unfamiliar to her. She usually always had an answer, even if it was just a snarky comeback. She'd have been better off not saying anything at all instead of making herself look like an idiot with a response like 'emotions are hard.' Every teen girl fantasised about meeting their idol at some point or another, but she doubted any of them fantasised about being this lost for words when the actually did.
She struggled to reclaim some face, and decided that going on the offensive was probably the best way to do so. She looked up, quirking her eyebrows in curiosity. "That must be kinda hard sometimes, at least I can turn mine off really easily, or not use it, I guess. Can you do that?"
She shrugged, "Is it hard being in like a crowded space when everyone is feeling intense emotions? Is that why you're here? I mean, people must get really worked up at your concerts right?"

At least the ones he deigned to notice. Which apparently included Melody now. Melody was a little too dismissive of most other students to really be in his position.
This might be a school for freaks, but it was still ultimately a high school, and Melody was still a high school girl.
A high school girl that had just been handed three joints. They vanished into her pocket and would be concealed in various different places as soon as she got back to her room. She hadn't had any weed since her father had picked her up from the police station, so to be handed three, in addition to the one she was carrying, was like being handed a wad of cash. Where the hell had he got them all from?
Annoyingly he had failed to answer her question, presumably deliberately. She resisted the urge to glare, knowing he was probably frustrating her deliberately. She resolved not to give away her frustration. She could probably draw out those three for a while, then maybe she could convince him to give her a few more somehow.
Unfortunately that opportunity did not seem forthcoming. "Ha, good luck getting booze. Are you going to walk to town with your fake ID?"

She didn't give any further information on the matter, after all, she didn't exactly hold him in the highest of regards these days. She shrugged in response to Maia's next words, she hadn't expected the other girl to be able to help, pretty much all of them were here to learn more about their abilities, and they all had different qualities. She didn't even know anyone else at the school with a power even close to hers, which made it even more difficult.
She listened, frowning, as Maia explained her ability, it was very different to her own, and she couldn't help but wonder what it must be like to be able to sense emotions like that. It must be confusing, or maybe it wasn't anymore. After all, it would be easy to work out what other people were thinking now, which must make a lot of conversations and situations much easier.

He didn't share much about it, but he had occasionally mused aloud over dinner or in other situations. He was knowledgeable on metahumans. It had been a science for less than two years, but already he was considered something of an expert on the matter. She knew that no metahuman he had ever studied had possessed the same power set. Many seemed to have variations or themes, super strength for example, but it always had something different about it. Could anyone ever really teach you how to use your abilities if they were always different?
"Yeah, my dad says everyone's powers are different in some way, sometimes big, sometimes just little differences so they look like the same power."
She shrugged, clearly she had given the matter some thought. Her own ability was relatively unusual, most abilities couldn't do as many different things as hers. She knew it had fascinated her father, which only made the sensation of being a disappointment more astute. Occasionally he'd looked at her as if he was close to taking her to his lab. He never had though, never even mentioned it.
"I wish someone could help me with mine though."
She glanced over at the older girl, "What's your power? I've never seen you use it or anything."

She glared at him uncertainly, trying to work out whether the question was genuine, or simply an attempt to 'get her on side' as many teachers were wont to try. Somehow it didn't feel like the shallow manipulation she normally associated with teachers, but something more honest. Maybe he was a really good liar, or maybe he was just that honest.
Hesitantly, and still with an undeniable hint of suspicion in her tone, she said "I dunno, have a car? This place is like 20 miles from the nearest town, which sucks. You don't realise how boring the same few buildings are until you don't have a chance to leave them."
She shrugged, "It's a bit like prison really, at least if you started working here you could just quit if you wanted to."
Maybe it wouldn't feel so bad if leaving was an option. She was sure she could leave if she really wanted to, either by simply walking the 20 miles to the nearest town or doing something so heinous as to get herself expelled immediately. But that would mean going back home, back to her father, and she wasn't ready to do that yet either.
She started walking towards the door. "I've only been here like a few months anyway, all of us have, it's not like any of us know what it's really like. There's still buildings they haven't opened, new ones with work still going on inside."
