Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Buying a drink wouldn't have been too much of an issue. Jack had a fake ID so good that it was actually an official document from the government. Faking IDs was easy when you could hack government systems. Still, it didn't make too much sense to show off those capabilities to Raven when they had already shown more than they'd normally like.
It had left them feeling off-balance. Normally they would be in control of a situation like this, but Raven was the one who had regained control. Jack wasn't comfortable with that state of affairs, and they couldn't leave it that way even if they'd wanted to.
They shrugged, "I might not be able to buy you a drink, but it's obvious that you're not from around here. There must be something I can do for you?"

Raven couldn't help but half snort as it was remarked that she wasn't from around the area. "Never ceases to amuse me when I'm told I'm 'not from around here'." She chuckled slightly under her breath. "Is my 'I'm not from here' badge showing?" She joked with a half smile.
"Don't worry yourself though. You don't owe me anything. I just hate to see someone being ganged up on like that." She gave a small dismissive shrug.
She shifted and leaned against the nearest wall, then glanced back to the former attackers. She then pointed over with a thumb. "Does stuff like this happen to you normally?" She asked. The fact the teen carried a weapon somewhat suggested that they at least felt threatened enough to carry something in the first place. She was just a little curious on that. They didn't exactly seem like someone who tended to get into bother, but that was her own impression.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack hadn't particularly enjoyed being ganged up on themselves, not that it would have made much difference. Just one of those thugs could have beaten the crap out of them had it not been for Raven's help, especially given the malfunction of their one weapon. Jack was not even slightly physically intimidating. Their gangly limbs looked almost twig-like, and a long flight of stairs would leave them breathing heavily. They hired people for the physical stuff.
People, like Raven. Idly Jack wondered what Raven's upper limit was, they preferred hiring physical meta's for their services. After all, Jack could manage most of the cerebral things themselves, it was rare they ran into a problem that they couldn't deal with.
"Being beaten up on dingy alleyways? Not really, San Francisco isn't that dangerous. Still, I've had a few awkward brushes, but then hasn't everyone?"
It was clear that Jack was implying Raven had gotten herself into more than her fair share of 'awkward brushes'.

Raven smiled slightly and nodded. "This place is a whole lot more laid back. I think that's what beckons me here." The difference was now more noticeable since she had tried to start paying attention. She could thank Sonnet for that. That said she still liked drifting from place to place.
She couldn't help the chuckle of the mention of awkward brushes. It was easy to see what Jack was getting at. "Oh I've been there one or twice. Maybe more." She continued to chuckle under her breath. She had long since stopped counting the number of instances she had, and that was even before the event had occurred.
"Your awkward brushes must've been something for you to have the need to carry that thing around." She gestured to towards Jack, meaning their little zapping gadget. She was still a little curious about that.
"You know anywhere around here that does a good cup of coffee this time of night?" She now asked. She had a need to get a small buzz of something, and caffeine was always a good pick me up.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack shrugged, there hadn't been a whole lot of awkward brushes that had necessitated this specific device. More they'd chosen to take it out today because it needed testing, on the off chance that they ended up in a bad spot that is. In hindsight that hadn't been the best move, taking an as yet untested and highly unstable device out as protection had clearly not worked so well. They probably would have had it stolen if Raven hadn't shown up in time to save the day. Not that they would be sharing that particular titbit of information.
They gestured with the small device before dropping it back into a pocket. "Not really, I just like being prepared." Clearly Raven was interested in the device, after all it wasn't exactly similar to your average commercial taser. It's appearance was decidedly cobbled together, while it's effect was considerably flashier than anything that could be bought in a store.
Starting to walk down the alleyway back towards normal civilisation, Jack beckoned for Raven to follow them. "Yeah, there's a little place a couple of blocks from here. Does great coffee and they have amazing coffee cake."
Jack pretty much operated on caffeine, as the dark bags beneath their eyes betrayed. That one of their favourite coffee shops was also their primary supplier of coffee cake would be no surprise to someone that knew them well.

"You take being prepared to a whole new level. Gotta say I'm impressed." Raven nodded a little, more out of appreciation than anything else. Her gaze went to that device one more, granted she didn't get much more out of it since it ended up being put away. She was half tempted to try and get Jack into a situation where she could pick pocket the thing. It was just the matter of figuring out whether it would truly be worth it.
She now started to walk along with Jack after being gestured at to follow them. She smiled a little towards them as they mentioned about the coffee place they knew of. "Great coffee. Well that sounds just... great." She chuckled a little. "Never have been able to get onboard anything else related. Cakes... ice-cream and the like. A simple black coffee does the job. None of those fancy sweet frothy things either."
She cast her gaze over towards Jack as they walked. "You actually from around here then?"

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack raised an eyebrow at Raven's rejection of cake, ice cream and the like. Not that they cared, she would drink a coffee, and Jack could eat the coffee cake. The place wasn't far, Jack could already see the small sign mounted on the wall above the shop as they walked.
"I live here. I'm not from around here originally though."
Jack was from the other side of the country, a fact that they didn't advertise, but didn't go to great pains to disguise either. Their family would be able to find them easily, making them work harder for it just made it more likely that someone would come looking if they didn't know exactly where they were.

"Does anyone actually come from around these parts?" Raven chuckled slightly with a shake of her head. It wasn't just San Francisco that she had in mind.
"I suppose this place has its charms. One of the reasons why I don't mind coming this way. Even just for a flying visit." She added. She quite liked dropping in jokes about her mode of travel, even if it did get lost on some people.
As for Jack she wondered now what they were making of her. She was almost tempted to ask, but she kept that urge at bay instead. For now she just continued to walk alongside them towards their destination. Her patting briefly at a point of her coat, where she kept by habit a flask. Coffee was on the cards but she was likely to give it a small addition. That pat purely assurance that the flask was indeed there.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack frowned at Raven's response. "Nobody worth meeting." San Francisco was well known for it's diversity. It's proximity to Silicon Valley meant that the city on the bay was often host to people from all over the world hoping to make their fortunes in the technology industry. Or those that had already done so. Jack knew better than to attempt the same. Though their technology could easily earn them a place as one of the most eccentric geniuses ever to rise in the centre of American technological advancement, much of it could not be replicated. Besides, they had no inclination to share their abilities with the wider world. That much at least they had learned from their father.
They raised an eyebrow at her comment about a flying visit, there seemed to be an amused edge to her tone of voice, though exactly why that statement should amuse her was not immediately clear. Perhaps it would become so when they had the chance to complete some proper research into the unusual meta.
The staff of the coffee shop recognised Jack, though the young barista behind the counter looked surprised to see them accompanied by the older woman. A generous slice of coffee cake had already been cut before the two reached the counter, but the young woman paused before preparing coffee, awaiting what the brunette's order might be.
The coffee shop was tiny, the space dominated by the large counter that line the back of the shop. The furniture was old and looked like it had mostly been rescued from thrift stores, consisting mostly of overstuffed armchairs and low, battered coffee tables. There are only a handful of people in the coffee shop, it's not exactly rush hour. The current patrons are sat with macbooks, steaming, obviously fresh cups of coffee sat beside them.
Jack turned to Raven as they produced a credit card, that had it been further examined, possessed someone else's name. "Whatever you want, it's on me."

"You probably have a point there." Raven cast a side glance towards Jack. Other than her old home town, she couldn't recall many who were ever considered locals. And here in the States anyone of interest were almost always from elsewhere also.
She followed Jack alone, her peering over the building which held the coffee shop. It seemed small and quaint enough. She figured since it wasn't a typical run of the mill chain store then people like Jack were the type that kept it going. Jack certain went enough for the staff on shift to get their coffee cake at the ready when they came in through the door. "You must come here a lot by the looks of it." She commented in mild amusement.
On being told whatever she wanted was on Jack she gave a nod. Her gaze briefly going to the credit card that was produced for payment. "Double espresso for me." She stated simply as her request. Her hand patting at the place of her flask once again, even if she had already done so just minutes prior.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | It took only a matter of minutes for the coffee to be prepared, Jack noting Raven's continued attention to a pocket that contained a bulky rectangular object. It was too bulky to be a phone. A wallet? A flask?
A lack of money would make her easy to manipulate. An addiction? Easier still. This woman was clearly a meta, though just how potent remained to be seen. They already had two dangerous women in their employ, though one was considerably more dangerous than the other. Still, it could never hurt to add another to the roster, so to speak.
Collecting the steaming cup of coffee, and the small plate bearing their cake, they took the items to an unoccupied table at the back of the room. It was a little away from the shops other patrons, and the music playing in the background was quiet enough to allow conversation, but loud enough to discourage eavesdropping.
"I come here a lot. I like my coffee."
Jack nodded at the espresso that Raven had ordered. "I appreciate that you do too. I'm always faintly suspicious of someone who doesn't drink coffee."
Not that they weren't faintly suspicious of Raven. After all, they knew almost nothing about her and had thus far had managed to dig very little information out of her. "So why San Francisco? Why not LA? Normally people go there first when on a tour…"

Having collected her own prepared coffee Raven followed Jack over to where they were headed. As usual whenever she sat herself down she was cautious. She never liked the idea that anything could break under her the moment she sat down. She perched herself on the seat opposite and placed her cup down. Giving it a moment for cool down enough to stop the risk of burning her mouth.
"Believe me there's more than enough people out there who much prefer a cup of tea. By that I mean real brewed tea. Not a teabag in a cup of water stuffed into a microwave. If you listen carefully you can hear the cries of million English people from across the pond." She remarked with a chuckle, amusement filling her eyes.
"Coffee makes it easier to keep awake or to give a proper caffeine buzz." She then added. Glancing about a moment she ended up taking out the old fashioned styled flask from her pocket, and taking off the cap she splashed a bit of its contents into her coffee. "Though sometimes a little extra makes it much nicer."
Without a second thought she had a brief swig from the flask directly before putting it away. She didn't even truly notice when she did that at times, this however was just a quick measure of satisfaction.
"What makes you think I haven't already been that way?" She answered Jack's question about LA. Her look of amusement returning once again.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack shrugged, "A hunch. You get a feel for when people have been down that way."
It had been a blind guess in truth, but they weren't about to admit that to the woman. Not having background information on her made them uncomfortable. They rarely came into this kind of contact with individuals they didn't know about. It left them on edge.
They had noted the flask, and the apparently unconscious swig Raven took from it. It had to be alcohol. The moment was too swift for them to be able to smell anything, but that sort of behaviour surely indicated some sort of addiction. It could just be the stereotype associated with flasks, but it seemed to make sense.
They sipped at the hot coffee, before carefully cutting a sliver from the cake with a fork and spearing it into their mouth. It was good, as it always was. Jack wouldn't bother coming back if it wasn't. "I prefer my coffee as just that. There's something about a pure dose of caffeine…"

Raven chuckled under her breath and then smiled towards Jack. "Oh I dunno." Her eyes displayed her inner amusement. "You'd probably be surprised to know just where I've ended up over the last several months." She told them as she started to lean back a little in her seat, just to halt the motion as the seat creaked underneath her. The last thing she wanted right then was to break a chair because she was started to become distracted. Instead she cleared her throat slightly and straightened up before she carefully picked up her cup and took a sip of the hot alcohol tainted coffee. With any luck the former action would just be ignored. She placed the cup down and nodded in appreciation as she swept her tongue briefly over her lips, being as she had just managed to burn her mouth a little. Not that she minded all that much. "What do you know, the coffee here is good. Actually make that awesomely good." She stated as she showed how impressed she was. Raven then cast her gaze back towards Jack. "There are some things out there however that are better than a jolt of caffeine." She tod them with another chuckle, while a smile played over her lips. "But considering I don't know diddly squat about you Jack, I wouldn't want to harm a potentially innocent mind." She added as that smile broadened slightly. She was in a way still trying to figure out just what Jack was. She could easily start to slowly provoke them to try and get a rise out of them. Not that she was all that certain at this stage if it was possible.

Nobody Don't you know who I think I am? | Jack raises an unimpressed eyebrow. "I'm a teenager with a smartphone in 2020. I know the sort of stuff you're talking about, I don't think any teenager alive today has an innocent mind." They shrug, taking a sip of the scalding hot coffee. They don't produce the phone in question as it is decidedly not what one would expect to be in the hands of the average teenager. It's larger than normal, for a start, and has several wires hanging from it's open casing. It looks distinctly more dangerous than anything anyone should be carrying around in their pocket. Nonetheless, Jack's pocket is where it stays.
They spear another segment of cake into their mouth. It is good, heavily iced with fudge icing and moist as well, clearly freshly baked for the day. Another reason why they frequent this coffee shop. Besides, the staff here know them, and leave them to their own devices for the most part, which Jack values.
"So what actually brought you here to San Francisco of all places? They frown on vigilantes and there aren't many that can think about tackling Paladin when she comes down on them."
